Having finished putting away his things, David turned and looked to his new roommate.

"So, five minutes in and you've seen the stuff they're not eager to roll out in front of all of the rest of us. What's back there?"

Fritz glanced away from the television screen, unable to admit that whatever the colourful display was, it was both unlike nothing he could recall from the patchy memories of his time through the foster system, or the nearly-gone ones of his infant years with his biologicals, and also - combined with the generalized chaos of the day so far - approaching near-complete sensory overload.

"Cushy office for the big man and a sea-front view from the naughty step." He snarked, unsure what David really wanted to know. "They didn't exactly give me a guided tour of the dungeons." He turned his attention back to the TV, but a voice in the back of his head nagged at him. His roommate was an enigma of a young man; Fritz was certainly aware he himself was no charming, welcoming figure. Throw him a bone, Frederick. Hell, throw yourself a bone. You won't survive here if you isolate.

Fritz sighed.
"Look, it's a nice veneer, and they've got some good PR - but there are cells back there, and kids in them even. Why do you think they bought Alcatraz to build this place? It's still a prison. Just...a nicer one than usual."

Cells. That wasn't news, after all this place took in people in situations like Fritz... and the kid they picked up from the courthouse. But...

"Kids in them..?" He asked.

"Well, someone in them, talking about 'his ideas of punishment'. I'm just saying, they're prepared to lock up whoever they need to. With what some of us are capable of I doubt they practice a 'high-tolerance' approa-"

Fritz was cut off as a loud knocking erupted against the door, three heavy bangs.

"Dinner. Cafeteria." The door opened from the outside.

The pair looked at each other. David wasn't sure if Fritz would be expected to eat separately, but there was his answer. Come one, come all, so it seemed.

This place seemed sincere in its intent to drive rehabilitation, and do what it could to push the idea that this cold facility still saw them as people.

...at least on Day One.

David stood by the door, with his hand on the handle, checking if Fritz was coming. It was almost surprising he was dragging his feet, the guy didn't look like he'd eaten in days. Maybe he was just wary of rushing in such an unknown place.

Probably not the worst idea, really. All things considered.

He stepped through and looked down the hallway and saw the Sasha and the red-headed girl from earlier leaving their room. He turned away and checked to see Fritz waiting for him to move.

"I guess I'm allowed back in gen pop. After you, though. Doubt I made many friends during 'orientation'...I'd prefer to keep you all in front of me."

He walked out in the hallway, and turned the other way, to try and get his bearings on where the rest of the people in this "newest group of co-habitants" were situated relative to himself, and started to follow the flow of traffic to the cafeteria.

At the end of the hallway a— well, the person could only be described as a guard, really, divided the line in two. Boys to the left, girls to the right. Seemed almost redundant since they were already expected to walk in a randomly parsed single file line prior to that point, but David supposed the illusion of control has its own value.

The boys walked around another block and through the cafeteria from a different exit, the girls must have taken a more direct route as they hit their destination first, and were admiring the vast layout, that looked almost empty with how few of them would be eating there now.

It was laid out like a high school cafeteria and looked like it could feed hundreds at once. Right now, they numbered at maybe a few dozen.

Trying to see the front of the line, David could see they were getting given plastic sectioned trays to house their food. Some kind of paper or thin cardboard box housed a bread roll which was thrown on a corner. He couldn’t see the silver food trays yet, so instead scanned for people who had already been given their completed trays and told to find a seat.

It looked like beef bourguignon. Smelled like a good rendition of it too, from what he could tell. It’s just that the appearance was wanting, plated via being slopped into a plastic reservoir.

David tried to look ahead now that he was closer to the front, and it seemed he was right. Main tray was beef bourguignon, they had a second tray which he assumed had a vegetarian option. And beside them both was a singular plated salad, comprised of quinoa, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cooked legumes and spinach. A simple placecard in front reading “High Iron/Fibre Alternative – Lina Ziegler”. She evidently hadn’t made her way to the front of the queue yet.

David shuddered at the thought of someone putting out his full name for everyone to see, so early in this situation. He wondered how someone like Billy Isaacs might use that information, and hoped there was nobody else similar to him amongst them.

As more were collecting their food he found that the other adolescents weren’t really spreading out, mostly. Despite everything that had happened so far, most seemed to gather around two long tables. Most, not all. But it was something.

The otter waddled past him with a plastic tray full of mussels. Must have had his own food plan similar to ‘Lina Ziegler’ and collected his food early. He assumed it was male, it was from the same line he was in, after all.

He wondered whether Fritz would try his luck with one of the two crowded tables, or if he’d feel pushed off by social etiquette. The greeting he’d received he doubted that would be the case. But who’s to say.

“Beef or vegetarian?” Came the flat tone as he hit the front of the line.

“Beef.” The server said down the line, and a pit crew of servers added the bread roll, a ladleful of bourguignon, a scoop of a baked Mac ‘n’ Cheese, some mixed vegetables, and a small slice of some kind of vanilla custard dessert.

David walked to the end of the queue where another flat “Beef” awaited for him, and the full tray was thrust into his hands, along with a small bottle of some kind of soda.

“Spoons are there.” And the server’s attention was gone, back to working on the next tray. The server withdrew the container of spoons, seeing who was following David.

David felt the pressure of the rush behind him and remembered his notes.

“Don’t hold up the lines. Keep things moving smoothly.”

So he made his way to the crowded two tables and considered his options. But he wasn’t ready to see the few new faces who were also mixed in.

‘The Kid’ appeared to be enjoying her opportunity to hold court and explain the goings on to some more ‘fresh meat’. He thought it might be worth sitting somewhere within earshot of her, and that left quite a few places. She certainly revelled in her seniority and ability to practically function as a tour guide.

Besides, when someone else filled silence, it meant he wouldn’t be expected to. Absorb what information he could, and think.

He found a spare seat where he wouldn’t have to ask anyone to move, and decided to let himself blend in to background, as conversation spread to the boy in the infirmary, and what the ‘fresh meat’ would likely be expected to do tomorrow. Their first ‘full day’ in Aegis’ Alcatraz facility.

As Natsumi nodded in agreement, Sophia rose from her bed, a mix of trepidation and anticipation filling her. Together, they made their way out of their room, joining the others as they walked towards the cafeteria. The halls echoed with the nervous murmur of students, their apprehension mirroring Sophia’s inner turmoil. Had she perhaps done something thoughtless back there? She couldn’t stop her mind from replaying everything she’d said. Why had she put her parents in such a negative light, at all?

Sophia knew she was the sole reason for her presence here, through and through. She was the sole reason that she wasn’t normal.

As Sophia entered the bustling cafeteria, her gaze scanned the crowd, taking note of the diverse faces she saw. Among them, she even spotted Haven in the lineup ahead. The urge to chat her up again tugged at the blonde, but she hesitated, fearing she might be an unwelcome interruption. Besides, she found her eyes following an interesting sight of an…

Is that an otter!?

Sophia’s mouth hung open in utter shock before melding into an expression of confusion. How had she not sensed the creature? And it was strange. The more Sophia looked at it, the more she was sure he or she or it wasn’t what she thought it was. Unlike her other animal companions back home, there was an eerie absence of any emotional resonance. This otter also carried itself with a purpose, its sleek form gliding effortlessly through the bustling cafeteria. And then there was the tray—a detail that defied all otter norms.

Sophia had never seen an otter serve itself food before.

The temptation to approach him/her/it gnawed at her, but she reigned it in, remembering her manners. Instead, she tore her gaze away, grabbing a tray and joining the line for food, her mind still churning. Did she really want to repeat the same mistakes she’d made before, anyway? Surely, the normal thing would be to prefer talking to someone human like her here.

With a sigh, Sophia turned her attention to the food on offer. The server’s question pulled her from her reverie, and without hesitation, she opted for the vegetarian choice. She wasn’t down to change everything about herself here, after all.

Navigating through the maze of tables, the blonde settled into a seat that offered a balance of proximity and solitude. The faces nearby were familiar—echoes of similar conversation from the rec room—but right now, they were just faces, nothing more. Her social reserves were depleted, the day’s events having drawn heavily upon her introverted spirit.

Sophia’s fingers hovered over her meal, the vibrant colours of the vegetables stark against the white of her plate, yet her appetite was lost to contemplation. Her thoughts circled back to the otter, an unexpected aberration in the academy’s structured environment. It had drawn curious looks from her peers, its odd behaviour a ripple in the otherwise still waters of their routine.

But to Sophia, the otter was more than just a curiosity; it was a gentle nudge from the universe—a reminder that not every mystery required an immediate solution. There was wisdom in the patience of observation, in the quiet acceptance that some things simply were. And yet, despite this understanding, a part of her yearned for the tactile connection, the soft fur beneath her fingertips, the physical affirmation of the otter’s reality.

Her desire to reach out and touch the creature was a tangible echo of her longing to connect with the parts of her world that remained just out of reach. It was a silent battle between her disciplined restraint and the raw, instinctual pull toward the warmth of a familiar life that the otter represented.

Sophia’s gaze drifted across the cafeteria, momentarily catching on a solitary figure at another table near to hers- his presence a mirror to her own. She felt a kinship with him then, yet-

With a soft exhale, Sophia turned her attention back to her plate, finally lifting her fork. The act was one of self-promise—a vow to honour the delicate balance between her previous life and the current one that buzzed around her. For now, she would savour the simplicity of her meal, because sometimes, it was enough to simply be.

His roommate didn't speak as he tilted his head to the side to examine Seobin as the chocolate skinned delight meditated. He waved his hand in front of his face as if trying to get a reaction out of Seobin, but Seobin remained unmoved.

"Wow," the younger male mouthed as he sat down in front of Seobin.

"You were two seconds away from flying across the room," Seobin said, his eyes still closed. In front of him were three large metal balls, each weighing more than the other, and effortlessly they began to lift and revolve in a circle in front of Seobin. "Might I ask your name?"

"Joey," the young male said, awestruck at Seobin's innocent display. "Who are you? Kinetic Man or something?"

"Seobin, just call me Seobin."

One of the metal ball floated over to Joey and landed gently on the floor in front of him. When Seobin finally opened his eyes, he managed to smile. Joey was a blonde hair, blue eyed short guy who liked to tan. The obvious sun kissed skin was edvidence in his many hours in the sunlight.

"What are you here for?" Seobin said, holding out his hand as one metal ball hovered dangerously close to his palm.

"I can teleport. It took them some time to catch me, and after a few bank heists I was eventually found and brought here."

A loud knock at the door broke Seobin's concentration and the smallest metal ball crashed through the door and struck the man in his privates. Seobin winced when he heard the groan followed by the sound of a body hitting the unforgiving floor. Joey was first to the door and Seobin followed. The guard was holding his injured manhood, and Joey had the biggest grin plastered on his face while Seobin knelt down to help the guard up.

"Easy sir, easy, that was a 10 lb metal ball."

"Where did you.... get them?" the guard said, glaring at Seobin.

"Well, I... I kinda pressed metal together to make them. It wasn't easy, but with enough force..."

"Nevermind that. It's dinner time get your asses to the cafeteria."

"But you're hurt," Seobin said. "At least let me get you to the infirmary..."

Joey shook his head leaning against the door with his arms crossed. There wasn't any arguing that would relieve the pain the guard was in, and reluctantly he agreed to have Seobin help him to the infirmary, but he explained that the weights would be confiscated. Joey went to the cafeteria ahead of Seobin. He was silent as they moved through the halls of the facility. Each step the guard took a curse spilled from his mouth.

"I am terribly sorry," Seobin said.

"I know, you've apologized repeatedly since we left your dorm."

The rounded a corner and arrived at their destination. Seobin handed the guard over to those in charge at the infirmary and sighed as he turned to leave.

"Hey kid." Seobin turned to see the guard give him a thumbs up. "Keep training. You'll get there."

The walk to the cafeteria was silent. His mind spinning like a tornado after everything that had happened.

"Seobin, you got this," he said. Speaking in first person helped him come to term with things. There were so many gifted people there, and they were all there for a reason. Some of them would try to resist whatever influence this place had, but Seobin would do his best to make sure his world was safe and sound. He would be a father his son would be proud of.

“There’s too many of ya…” The grizzled juvenile voice spoke out.

“What exactly have ya gone and done here? This isn’t right.”

She seemed genuinely put out by the fact. As if it were HER place and her responsibility for such things.

The Kid had picked up on there being extra people here, and whilst she hadn’t known anyone well enough in the Rec Room, she could tell there were extras. She just wasn’t sure which ones.

“Is that a problem?” Rex asked, the large stony teen breaking the silence.

The Kid smiled. A question. She revelled in the opportunity to impart information.

“Can be, yeah.” She said, with a knowing grin. “I don’t know if you lot have noticed yet, but the screws get antsy when there’s too many of us in one place. Or if the power level swings too high in one place. It’s why tomorrow, they’re gonna break you up into smaller more manageable groups. Now you’re all gonna be known as a Bloc letter – dunno what your designation is, but you’ll be in smaller units above. They’ll probably push it as some measure so you can develop and hone teamwork abilities with a few more familiar people. But it’ll really be cos it scares the shit out of our ‘porters’. So the administration does things to accommodate them. Don’t want guards goin’ on strike now, do they?”

She let out an uncomfortably low growl of laughter for her appearance.

The group had already experienced that. As the majority of the group had witnessed a jumpy guard being quick on the trigger with his pepper spray earlier.

“But yeah, there’ll certainly be no escapin’ it in your instance… what’ve you got, twenty-five? Twenty-four? How’d you lot swing that?”

“We’re not supposed to be here.” Came a soft voice from a new person they hadn’t seen or heard from previously in bright white reflective clothing. Everyone turned.

“That’s why.” Vanyssa elucidated.

“Four of us, came through unique means. Wound up here.”

The large form of Kaiden gave a little wave.

"So what's likely to happen from here?" The brassy blonde rockabilly asked, looking up from her tray.

"Well, tomorrow mornin' first thing, they'll likely break you all up into smaller groups. Two or three's not uncommon, but considering there's twenty four of ya, and considering you just blew Calculus away in the first five minutes of bein' here - and wasn't that a thing of beauty, by the way. Well, I wouldn't even rule out four or maybe even five."

"Long story short... I don't get surprised by too much here normally, but I reckon you bunch might be treated outside of the ordinary."

"You keep saying twenty-four, and you, what about you and those others we met--?"

"The half dozen you met in the rec room? We're not in your bloc number. We're just a welcoming bunch of low numbers they grouped together to ease you in to the rest of the people here."

"Low numbers?" Queried the Hawaiian air rider.

"Yup. Number #543 at your service. The lowest number at this here facility. When I started out those numbers held a lot more meaning, and the handling of the... residents... was a lot more sterile in nature. Most of us weren't considered much more than the numbers they assigned us on arrival. But the low numbers are long timers here, who have either washed out, or as yet not completed the Ju-V program to a regular schedule. The six of us aren't in a real bloc anymore, with most of the people we arrived with already having progressed through. So no, we're not in your bloc. You'll probably see us around a bit, though. We tend to get grouped as our own separate bunch, since they don't really have much other way of sorting us."

"So tomorrow morning they group us, then what?" Asked Adam.

"Well, then your program starts in earnest. Some of you they'll probably take into Heuristics, or training, get a sense of your powersets, what development they figure you'll need and identifying what they think you'll be capable of. Others will probably go out on some local patrol with a local metahuman hero affiliate of Aegis... kinda like a ridealong. They'll keep you busy regardless. Nothing that'll actually be too involved yet, though. Too much liability for that. But yeah, showing you the basic ropes, and what's expected of you."

"So how will they decide who they'll be grouping together? Do we get to pick who we go with?" Kaiden asked.

"Now that I can't help ya with." The Kid said, explaining the limits of her knowledge. "I've never noticed a common thread for how they divide blocs up. They'll split roommates, leave others together, if there's a rhyme or reason to it, I've never figgered it. Any of you could be together, or any of you separated." She stopped and shrugged, aware at how little help the honest answer was.

"Sleep?" Quinn angrily inquired. "We're stuck in a small box, and you want to sleep? You're the one who got us into this mess!"

She couldn't believe what she had been hearing. The unknown girl was seemingly apologetic for what she had "done", despite Quinn having little understanding of what had even happened. But Quinn didn't care. The only thing she cared for was to get out. She had enough of tiny boxes. She had enough of being trapped in a cage, and for all intents and purposes, this sterile hospital-esque room was practically one. There was no time for sleep; they (or rather, her) needed to find a way out of this room.

Grumbling to herself, Quinn sighed and turned her attention back to the door. The girl could sleep for whatever she cared; she seemed absolutely useless in terms of prioritizing survival. If she wasn't going to help, then Quinn would have to forge her own path, just as she did all those years on the streets.

Before Quinn could ponder much more on how to plan her escape, however, her answer came unexpectedly as the door itself opened, with a rather tall man standing at the door.

"Dinner time." A burly voice announced. Quinn couldn't see much of a face from where she stood, and instead only saw pristine leather boots and neatly-pressed pants. "Get up."

"Finally." Quinn snapped. Normally, she'd been a bit more cautious of the man, but this appeared to be her only shot so far at escaping this dorm prison, and so she took the opportunity while she still could.

Fluttering her wings to rise up into the air so that she wouldn't tire herself out walking the giant-sized hallways, Quinn took one final look at the other girl before following the guard out of the room. Whether or not if she wanted to get up onto her feet was certainly her problem, not Quinn's.

Before either of them could continue their conversation, they were suddenly interrupted by a knock at the door. Apparently, it was time for them all to have dinner—their first actual meal at the complex. It left Natsumi wondering what type of food would be served, especially since they were supposed to be served by a three Michelin star chef, or so the introductory video had stated. She had never ate a Michelin-worthy meal before, so it would be a new (and certainly tasty!) experience to explore.

"I'm sure we can always watch it after dinner." Natsumi replied, smiling at Sophia in return.

Standing up from her seat, Natsumi followed Sophia and the guard to the cafeteria, wherein a group of her fellow attendees had already gathered. Finding her place in the girls' line behind Sophia, the meal service reminded Natsumi much of a school lunch period. Each were given a plastic tray with somewhat disappointing-looking food haphazardly thrown on the plate, not unlike your typical lunch lady. At least they were willing to dole out a decent amount of food on top of a small desert.

Taking a tray of beef bourguignon for herself, Natsumi wandered over towards the cafeteria tables. She looked around for Sophia or Lina, tempted to sit with either of them. But as more and more of the attendees began to get their food, it became clear that groups were beginning to form at the tables. Being always eager to make more friends, Natsumi instead decided to follow the growing crowd of people to take a seat at one of the tables.

"Is this seat taken?" Natsumi asked as she approached the table, awaiting a response from one of her fellow AEGIS attendees.

Haven's stomach ached the whole way to the front of the line. She tried to hide how hungry she felt in her nonchalant answers to the workers behind the counter. Her gaze never left the food, though. A small sign that she couldn't wait for a full stomach of "beef" pastry.

The tray was taken from the server with gentle strength as Haven snagged a spoon with her other hand. She was sure that they had plenty to spare, in case it slipped onto the ground, but Haven didn't want to delay her meal any longer than necessary. So, hands firm on each end of the tray, Haven turned and made a casual beeline for the first person she saw that she didn't feel like avoiding.

Haven set her tray onto the table two spaces down from Sophia. She eased into the seat, grateful again that they were backless, and allowed her wings to fold behind her. The tips of them barely grazed the floor. She had already scooped up her spoon before she spoke.

"How's it taste?" She asked. Her eyes flitted to the other tables briefly. They snagged on the form of a mothman at the table The Kid was hosting at, her eyes roaming the tiny powder-like scales that covered his wings. Then on the small form of a girl with translucent wings similar to the honeybees Haven used to steal from.

Woah... Wes is gonna have a field day.

Haven quickly turned her focus back onto her meal. The spoon dug into the center of the pie. She wasted no time in taking the first bite. The taste was bland, but the notes of salt and meat hit her tastebuds and that's all she needed for her guarded posture to subtly melt.

"Not bad," she murmured around her chewing.

The Kid's monologue caught her attention. She listened to the words as she took her time on the beef pie. It seemed like they'd caught too many fish in their trap, and now they were trying to figure out what to do with them. If The Kid was right about them being split into groups, it was obvious which group she'd be sent to. Her "powersets" were simple and needed no further discovery. She'd be sent on a ride along, to be told what to do with herself when she's released into the public after her "rehabilitation".

With a local hero affiliate, though? She wondered if Wes was already hoping that he'd be put in that group. He would certainly be an asset to the facility. A promising future- legal - hero. Haven, however, wondered if the world would ever accept a metahuman as their saviour.

Lost in her thoughts, Haven glanced up at the table across from them. The guy with the white chunk of hair sat across from them, minding his own business. He was still a mystery. One that Haven wasn't sure she wanted to uncover. She turned her head to check in with Sophia, and her eyes caught sight of him.

Frederick Jackson set free among the group, walking spoonless with his own tray of beef pie. Haven's wings instinctively tucked closer to her back. She didn't turn her gaze away, nor did she glare or balk at him. She watched him carefully, as if she was unsure how to feel about him.

She didn't know if she should avoid him entirely or if she wanted to hand him her own spoon as an offering. Did they really expect him to eat with his hands? He looked hungry, just as hungry as she was, but he still deserved the simple respect of a utensil to eat with.

Haven's eyes returned to her tray. She put another bite full of pie in her mouth and chewed. She could chat with Sophia for a bit while she thought about it. Even though she'd hardly looked at her table mate since she sat down.

Interacts with Haven (@Skai)

As Sophia carefully navigated her fork through the modest meal before her, the cacophony of voices from the adjacent table seeped into her consciousness. The Kid’s confident smirk was a stark contrast to the unease that knotted in her stomach with each snippet of conversation she overheard. The thought of the group being divided loomed over her, stirring a silent wish that Nat and Haven would remain by her side, at least. Not that she was against meeting new people but the thought of there being no familiar faces with her made her anxious.

The rationale behind the division was not lost on her; the memory of Billy’s near-fatal mishap sent a shiver down her spine. The task of managing a myriad of abilities and temperaments must indeed be daunting for the overseers of this peculiar establishment.

"Two or three, or even four or five,"Sophia murmured, more to herself than to anyone else. Now she really hoped she got Haven or Nat. But…what were the chances of that, in such a big group? Not high. That’s what that meant. Still, it was entirely up to her on how to handle the situation. So, she would just have to take whatever she’s given in the best way. Somehow.

"Yup. Number #543 at your service. The lowest number at this here facility. When I started out those numbers held a lot more meaning, and the handling of the... residents... was a lot more sterile in nature. Most of us weren't considered much more than the numbers they assigned us on arrival."

This revelation halted Sophia’s meal, prompting a contemplative pause. Was it preferable to be branded an outcast or reduced to a mere numerical code? Her own experiences had taught her the sting of exclusion, yet she could scarcely fathom the coldness of being equated to a single variable in an equation.

It just seemed too dehumanizing.

It was then that Sophia’s gaze found Haven, her arrival marked by the elegant tuck of her wings—a dance of feathers and finesse. A smile graced the blonde's lips, a silent acknowledgment of the winged girl’s poise. Haven’s inquiry about the meal drew her attention back to her plate, prompting a candid assessment.

“It’s passable, I suppose. A tad on the bland side,”she admitted, her taste buds yearning for the familiar flavours of home. “But then again, I opted for the vegetarian meal, so perhaps my judgment is skewed.”

When she noticed Haven's gaze shifting towards a boy with dark brown hair—his appearance marked by more tattoos than the blonde had ever seen before—Sophia followed her line of sight. The boy, who seemed to carry the weight of his harsh experiences in every line of his face and body, stood out even among the diverse group of metahumans. His grip on the tray seemed less about the food it carried and more about the burdens he bore. Or perhaps…he was simply hungry.

Sophia leaned slightly towards Haven, her voice gentle."Do you know that guy or something?"It was a nosey question, for sure, but it was out before she could second-guess herself.
