This roleplay is set in an alternative universe of Bleach where the original characters do not exist, however the clans remain the same. My goal is to expand on the world-building that’s influenced by the actions of the characters within the story.
Everyone will be starting off as UNSEATED Shinigami, fresh graduates after four years in the academy. This will give everyone the chance to progress equally, both in power and individual story arcs. Whatever the reason your character joined, there are rumors of a rebellion brewing within the Gotei 13 based on riots in Rukongai from the fiftieth district and beyond. There is also a steady increase of Hollows attacking in the Human World, and new leads have been found as to why. An incursion into Heuco Mundo left five Shinigami slaughtered, but the wounds didn’t resemble Hollow wounds. All three of these storylines will be able to be explored to start us off.
Sorry if this is info-dumping, I just would prefer to be thorough before I go into making a proper ooc.
This is intended to be a Character-Driven game influenced by the actions of the characters. There will be a mixture of Round Posting and Free Posting depending on what Mode we are on.
Main Story:
This is where Round Posting will come into play. This is the bread and butter of the game, and where the plot moves forward. Round Posting is when I post once, you reply once. I post again, and you can reply again, and so on. This keeps the IC less cluttered. That’s not to say you can’t post more than once or have a reaction to another character’s post, just be wary that trying to do too many actions at once can decrease the chance of success.
My writing expectations for Round Posting is Once, maybe Twice, a week depending on engagement. I’m not requiring you to write a novella or even a paragraph. I understand we all may have limits on time, writer’s block, or even the fact that not every character has a reaction to everything. All I require is a cohesive post that takes action and helps push the narrative forward. Writers and Roleplayers of all levels are welcomed here, and exceptions can always be made.
Free Mode:
This is wind-down time in between main missions. This is where players are free to interact how they choose without GM interference, and this is where I largely encourage collaborating with one another to grow character relationships and show more about your character’s life outside of the Gotei 13. Side-missions will be given out here, as well as progression with player’s personal stories. This is also another cheeky way for your GM to have time to brew the next Main Story.
There will be a healthy mix of the two as both tie into the power system of the game. Characters will automatically level up and gain new abilities and attributes after every Main Story, a reward for helping progress the story. Free Mode is where things get more interesting as good roleplay moments, training posts, and NPC interactions can all earn rewards. These rewards will be given based on general consistency and if it makes sense in the story, so participation is heavily encouraged.
Edit: I’m thinking of making a separate IC for the Main Story Missions to not restrict players from posting or collabing as freely as they like. If you’re interested, please let me know how you feel about this. The game will start off in Free Mode to get everyone acquainted with one another, and the setting.
Characters are able to start off with a Shikai up to four abilities to begin with. Abilities will come with Post Cooldowns. For example, if I have an ability that’s a simple slashing attack (Getsuga Tensho) then the ability cooldown will be two, so you would have to post two more times before you can use said ability again. This keeps combat orderly and reduces ability spam, and gives a fair pre-approved guideline on how to proceed if a PvP battle occurs. Post durations as well.
Example: “I get a power up and it lasts for five posts, with a six post cooldown.”
I’m giving leeway on powerful abilities as long as you can make it make sense, in the sense of cooldowns and drawbacks as well as narratively. So, in other words, let’s be creative but reasonable.
Players will be awarded points via level up or rewards. They are split into two groups; points for Zanpakuto abilities and points for attributes. Attributes are Hoho, Kido, Zanjutsu, and Hakudo. Attributes are ranked from Unseated level to Captain level and can be bought as the game proceeds, or used to create custom Attributes. I will be releasing the canon list of abilities, their skill levels, and costs later.
As for Zanpakuto abilities, say you earn 6 points after a Main Mission. You can use individual points (1) to upgrade existing abilities, or use 3 points to create an entirely new ability. Once again, this will be further explained in the official ooc.
Q: Can I Die? A: Simply put, yes. That’s not to say this will be a slaughter-fest but as you can kill your enemies, they can also kill and wound you. The Main Story requires you to be smart and use teamwork, actions have consequences so don’t do anything dumb like blindly rush in to strike the main villain and you’re unseated level. Think realistically, but take risks as well.
Q: Can I be a (Vizard, Quincy, Fullbringer, etc.)? A: I don’t want anything to be a full on no as I encourage creativity. I’m always willing to hear an idea, but for the purpose of how the game starts everyone will be strictly Shinigami. PM me privately if you have ideas for things down the road regarding alternative or half races.
Q: How does the Shinigami Age work? A: It’s surprisingly a question that gets asked a lot in Bleach RPs. It’s confusing but we’ll keep it simple and say add a 0 to whatever normal age they’d be. So if you were 19 you’d be 190. However, that’s for people born within the Spirit World compared to Human age. You can start as a Shinigami that died in the Human world, and go by normal human age. I encourage creativity in this aspect. However, age doesn’t play too much of a role in the spirit world.
Q: Can I have more than one character? A: New players start off with one character only. As there are multiple squads and multiple storylines, multiple characters will be accepted down the line as we determine engagement.
Q: Can we join any squad? A: In this universe new recruits are sent to Squad Ten for first missions and evaluations. That’s the in-verse explanation to determine how many players we have and which Squads will be open to join. While the Main Story missions will grab PCs from multiple squads, choosing your squad will open up unique interactions and abilities/items to gain in Free Posting.
Q: How many players are allowed? A: I only need four-five to get the game started. If there are further interests I’ll be willing to open up more slots as multiple storylines are happening at once, creating enough involvement for more than five players.
Q: Do you have experience as a GM? A: Most of my roleplay experience is as a GM. I helped run a successful Bleach RP that ran for a little over two years, and helped run arcs in games that I was a player in.
Q: Your Q&A didn’t answer my question! A: Feel free to ask here or PM me.
The different squads and their responsibilities have always been left ambiguous in the show. Therefore, this information is a mix between my own ideas and what the series has given us.
First Division: Led by the Captain-Commander, the First Division is made up of the most versatile and model Shinigami. The head of the Gotei 13, in cases of emergencies this division is able to ascertain situations and mobilize quickly without given orders. Most missions are sent out through them. Think about internal affairs, as well.
Second Division: This is the Stealth and Information department. Alongside Squad Twelve and Five, not much is known about this squad outside of basic information. They specialize in covert missions. Stealth and high battle skill is a known requirement for this squad. Unbeknownst to most Shinigami, the commander of this squad also leads the Onmitsukidō and carries out assassin missions.
Third Division: Information and Gathering. This division is responsible for sending Shinigami to gather information, and often works with the second and thirteenth division to ensure safety. They often work with Squad 12 as well in order to send information and work out conclusions. Monitoring and communication systems are run through them as well.
Fourth Division: Medical Assistance & Supply. As simple as it sounds. They deal with the brunt of injuries and are usually sent to the battlefield after the fact or act as support on missions if requested by other divisions.
Fifth Division: Kidō Tactics & Control. This division is responsible for creating, ranking, and monitoring the use of Kidō within the Soul Society. Most, if not all, of their members are accepted based on their skill in Kidō. It’s said to be one of the more difficult squads to move up in rank as it’s not determined by mission success, but by advancements made in the Kidō field. It’s known that the Fifth Division Captain is the head of the Kidō corps as well, however that group works in the shadows as well.
Sixth Division: Internal Affairs. This division is responsible for monitoring Shinigami activity and apprehending Shinigami that break the law. This squad works closest with Squad One, reporting directly to them as well as Central 46. Their barracks contain the largest number of holding cells. Think of your modern day police, but for Shinigami.
Seventh Division: Diplomatic Relations. This squad is responsible for maintaining peace within the Rukongai, and are the go to guys if the residents have problems. This is the closest residents get to interacting with the Gotei 13, bar an invasion or large scale attack.
Eighth Division: Reserves. This squad is similar to Squad Eleven in terms of being a combat squad. However, instead of specializing in anything, these members are generally well-rounded in order to fit any role needed. They are the first squad called if reinforcements are needed.
Ninth Division: Counter Intelligence. This squad works closely with Squad Twelve as well as the Sixth Division. On occasion, they also receive information from Squad Two. Their job is to prevent information from leaking, whether that’s to the Rukongai, Human World, or Seireitei. They also help the Fifth Division Captain store away forbidden Kidō, although this is a lesser known fact. If anything, speculation.
Tenth Division: Large-Scale Operations. The entry-division that every Shinigami joins upon graduating the academy. This squad is in charge of analyzing and assessing every new applicant. As such, most new applicants end up finding a home here and stay or wait a year or two before requesting transfers. As such, Squad Ten remains the squad with the highest number of Shinigami at any given time. On a larger scale, they are in charge of offensive tactics and get handed missions directly from Squad One in order to assess which Squad would be best for said mission.
Eleventh division: Frontlines. If you’ve watched the show, no further explanation is needed. If not, this is the second largest division in the Gotei 13. General meatheads that specialize in physical combat, often butting heads with members of the Fifth Division for their use in ranged combat. The Captain of this squad holds the title of Kenpachi, given only to the strongest Shinigami. The only way to become Captain of this squad is to kill the current captain in front of the entire division.
Twelfth Division: Research and Development. Once again, as simple as it sounds. This squad is in charge of technological advancements, as well as researching information sent to them from the various squads they work with. The Captain is said to be, as well as expected to be, the most intelligent Shinigami in the Soul Society. Ranking up in this squad is said to be the most difficult, and becoming Captain of this squad is second only to becoming Captain-Commander.
Thirteenth Division: Defensive Tactics. While Squad Seven is responsible for maintaining peace in the Rukongai, Squad Thirteen maintains peace within the Seireitei and the Human World. They often work in tandem with Squad Three to do patrols within the Human World.
If you’re interested, here’s a skeleton to help brainstorm. Be aware, this is a temporary template and is likely to change upon posting the official ooc so don’t feel pressured to fill it all out. Attributes and other features will be added later once a list is provided.

Edit: as for having two different threads for main story vs freetime, that's a new take on things, but I'd be down to try it. Potentially an unpopular opinion, but I tend to prefer posting back and forth in a thread rather than doing collabs off-site, and a separate thread sounds like it would facilitate that better.
Oooooh, I'm most definitely interested! I've loved Bleach and would love to see how this turns out!! I'll definitely get to brainstorming and fully figuring your combat system as I need to remind myself of several things I've forgotten since I've not watched the show in forever or played their games in forever either.

Thank you for your opinion in the matter. I would say it's rather unpopular as I see more people migrate over to discord but I understand completely, and I agree it'll facilitate it better. Main Mission IC will be strictly back and forth while the main IC will allow people to post however they please, off-site collabs or back and forth posting.

Welcome to the site, first and foremost and thank you for your interest. The combat system may seem like a lot but in practice it'll be simple, I promise. You're also not required to have full knowledge of the series as the important information will be posted and explained. If you have any questions or need any help, don't hesitate to let me know.
Absolutely interested, and hoping this'll last longer than the last Bleach RP I tried to join. This looks really promising.
Bleach RPs have a habit of dying fast... like really fast. But I believe it's due to most RPs leaving everyone to their own devices which is where interests die or people not feeling important. Every character here plays a role and will be involved in the story, but with a healthy mix of leaving you guy's to your own devices so you don't feel like you're being railroaded at the same time.
This seems to have a very passionate DM, and is perfect for my first roleplay on the site! My knowledge of bleach only extends to when they get back from the soul society (the first time? I don't know if they go back lol) but that should be enough to make a decent shinagami!!! Where do I send my character application lol
Edit: I also prefer to stay in threads as opposed to discord. The layout makes it feel more like a cohesive story imo. Reads better
This officially makes four which means I'll begin the ooc soon. Luckily I already have all the information I need to post, just need to edit and work on formatting.

Very passionate, like I stated this is the Bleach setting, but I want this to become something we can call our very own. You have more than enough knowledge to make a decent character. You can either post it here or PM me, just once again be aware that in the official OOC the CS may have additional information to fill out but no need to worry about that now.
ALSO I just want everyone to know this is an option as well when creating your character, specialization is a thing, and you may forego certain skills/abilities to make others more powerful than your average UNSEATED Shinigami. Example? You may suck terribly at Kido, so while your average Shinigami puts time aside to hone that skill, you may put that same amount of time into addition Zanjutsu or Hakuda training or whatever you choose. In case anyone wanted to go that route.
Edit: I also prefer to stay in threads as opposed to discord. The layout makes it feel more like a cohesive story imo. Reads better
[Too lazy to edit last post] Thank you for your opinion, it means a lot! I agree that it makes it more cohesive, and it's easier to find information/important moments we may want to go back to down the line that may be hidden otherwise by IC clutter. While the other IC welcomes it and is more for character moments. Separate the two for the sake of brevity, really.
Kobe is 6'2" and 180lbs. He has always been rather strong, tough, muscular, and slender. Yet, never enough to not be jealous of those who are truly gifted with physique. He has always only ever been slightly above average. Though he is clean shaven most weeks, he occasionally lets enough stubble grow over the course of a few days to be considered a beard. It is black and scruffy much like his hair.
Age: 28
Squad/Rank: [Squad Ten/Unseated]
Biography: Kobe died on earth at age 24, only very recently. As a matter of fact, it was by a hollow during a very recent string of unusual attacks. Not that he knew that, being a human at the time. He simply remembers a strange explosion, the bank crumbling around him, and thinking just before he died that was just his luck. He'd tried to live in a considerate manner to others. Tried to work a steady job, pay rent, find love. All the things a young man was supposed to do. Before he could see any of those things to fruition, he'd been shat on. In fact, all he'd ever really liked to do in life had been martial arts. He'd done judo throughout middle school and highschool, and picked up MMA as an adult. It was just a hobby, but one he was good at. Right when he'd been thinking about pursuing it seriously, he died of course.
This left him with a lot of unresolved resentment. When he'd been reborn in the soul society, he stomped around the first district demanding to see God, or whoever the fuck else was in charge of this whole cycle of death and rebirth. Of course, he was granted no access to anyone of the sort. Mainly because the people of the soul society were unsure if such a being existed themselves. Besides, he had worked up an appetite with all the yelling. Thankfully he had attracted the attention of a Shinagami on patrol, whom obliged him with lunch. The soul reaper noticed right away how unusual it would be for a new soul to grow hungry.
He suggested Kobe apply to the academy. Kobe shrugged his shoulders and said "why not," which brought him to graduation. He summoned his zanpakuto, and unlocked his shikai, all while showing slightly above average potential. He received no honors or special promotions, but a bit of encouragement from any reapers who happened to be sitting in to observe new recruits. It was enough to motivate him through to the end. Truly, he feels a fire in his heart now at the thought of hunting hollow. Maybe he's been granted a second chance to be a warrior. Or at least, someone slightly important.
Still, there is an air of melancholy that seems to hang over Kobe wherever he goes. He made friends during his academy days and is generally remembered as a likable fellow. Yet, solemn on most occasions. Until growing angry, that is. It seems that the dead end of his life has followed Kobe's mood into the afterlife. He always felt he was never special enough to excel, and yet too talented for those around him to not expect something from him. In the deepest pits of his heart, he longs for something. What, he's never been sure. Recognition? A purpose? Perhaps simple victory would be enough.
.squad 6 might be a good fit, seeing as my character's abilities are specialized mostly in breaking through defensive tactics. Apprehending other Shinagami seems like it would go hand in hand with this.
If not that, then maybe squad 3. Information and gathering would fit Kobe because of his even temperament and balance between speed, strength, and skill. He's not too much of a meathead to fuck up a delicate operation, he's just smart enough to notice details that might be important, but more specialized for combat than your average lightweight scout.
And the last choice, squad eleven. Frontlines, considering as I said Kobe should be good at taking on opponents more powerful than himself with skillful use of his extended range and slightly above average power. Given the right tactics and squad mates, he could fill the roll of skilled support or damage dealer. He would probably be slightly below average in spiritual pressure compared to the usual lineup on this squad, however, which would be a fun narrative.
~Zanpakuto~
Zanpakuto Name: Great Teacher Mononoke
Type: Power
Kaigo: "kind sage, please help us to dispell suffering and grant peace,"
Zanpakuto Appearance:
An Odachi with a standard single edge. It's extra length denote's Kobe's slightly above average well of spirit energy. It has an oily black sheathe, matching hand guard, and red kanji carved into it's blade. The kanji reads "May you pass on quietly," it's handle is wrapped in bright red string.
While in this form, Kobe has mastered the technique for enhancing the slicing power of the blade using spirit energy. Outside of melee combat it is the only spiritual technique he has truly mastered. This does not have much of an effect on barriers or other magical defenses summoned via kido, but enhances the physical slashing mechanism of the sword. Meaning much less force is needed to deliver deep cuts to an opponent, turning small cuts into gashes and lacerations. This technique does not project spirit energy past the blade, but only enhances it's cutting power on contact.
In addition, Kobe has trained a specific fighting style for using the Odachi. By practicing the same six cutting paths thoroughly, he has perfected these exact motions. Along these six specific direction, he can cut as close to perfectly as is humanly possible. This means he is not quite as good at improvising shots from awkward angles, but when in his most practiced stance facing a single opponent in front of himself, he cuts beautifully. Perfectly. It is a style of fighting specialized for dueling, and is made doubly deadly by the extended range of an Odachi. This fighting style has earned him the nickname of "the sage of six cuts," for the way he has diligently practiced it.
The wrapping on the handle of this long spear is also red, matching Kobe's manner of dress. It is seven feet long, with a very long and slender blade. The blade's shape excels in penetration of armor, and slipping in between gaps in an opponent's guard. The ropes on the back end of the spear trailing off are used in a strange manner by the Shinagami. When an opponent is just out of range, Kobe will sometimes throw the spear at his opponent and retract it back to him with the rope. This makes the object's full range a comfortable 12 feet.
Mononoke is smaller in stature and mass than Kobe by a fair bit. Maybe thirty pounds give or take. He has boyish, soft features but looks to be about Kobe's same age. What is similar about the two is their voices. mononoke shares a sing-song tone with Kobe. Somewhat high, and sweet.
**Disclaimer** I'm aware Kobe cannot have his bankai unlocked currently in the story
Shikai Skills:
Nimble Fury: Kobe's Shikai has the ability to project spirit energy out it's tip in an incredibly focused point. This creates a massive amount of penetrating force with each thrust. Not only can this be devastating to heavily armored opponents, it creates a "spell slicing," effect. This means it penetrates all but the most absolute of defensive spiritual techniques. This is the bane of all fighters who rely on guard abilities.
This ability taxes a large portion of spirit energy and can only be used 4 times in a usual battle. Use of a fifth time causes the Zanpakuto to revert back to it's base form for 5 turns. Use: 1 turn Cooldown: 2 turns
Enlightened Spirit: Mononoke becomes capable of levitation, and obey's the command of Kobe's thoughts. It can move at the same speed that Kobe can swing it, and sprint. It is also strong enough for Kobe to stand on it, or hang from it while levitating. This cannot be active at the same time as Nimble Fury. Use: 3 turns Cooldown: 4 turns
Biography: Personality: History: A previous resident of the 75 District of Rokungai, Yuto's first memories are of a maddening need to survive, satisfy the hunger, and become free of the dangers inherent to the district he lived in. It was during this particular stage of his life that he learned many of the lessons that would mark him later as a shinigami, none of them good, but all of them useful to survive.
Through sheer chance he did manage to join the academy where he was trained on all the proficiencies of a shinigami and despite possessing a complete lack of talent in Kido and the capacity to perceive spiritual energy he more than made up in impressive strength and unarmed combat, getting remarks from his teachers that it was purely thanks to these attributes that he graduated.
Sadly his dreams of a cushy life were dashed the moment he was assigned to a Division where he learned that his talent was barely good enough to get the nickname ‘Runt’ as the freshest recruit to join. There he is treated not only like a common soldier but as a busybody for his seniors. unexpectedly he has found himself fond of mindless physical labor.

Shikai form: A simple Katana without decoration accompanied by a red sheath
The spirit is a man with red hair and a white mask clothed in black and red robes
Inner World: A ruined District in fire with the ever distant sounds of fighting

Aka no Yukue: Everytime Aka is sheathed it starts to passively accumulate reiatsu within the sheath, which then allows the next attack to be launched at increased strength and speed Techniques
[Guren Shou: An emergency technique, rather than wait for energy to accumulate Yuto instead forces Reiatsu into the Sheath, filling it halfway, enough to realize one of the other two techniques or to launch an attack with increased strength and speed, however using it deactivates Aka no Yukue for some time]
[Shukari: Yuto releases all accumulated energy in a single slash of red sharpened reiatsu.]

Biography: Not much can be said on her past as she chooses to ignore the things she's been through, trauma blocking it out. Coming from district 80 of the Rukongai district, she's definitely struggled through life since she came to be here. Her teachers would think that the only way she survived most of the brutality in that district is due to her pretty face and they would be right. While her face did offer advantages, it didn't mean much to most men there so she had to be quick and cunning to earn a place there and not be treated like vermin. Happy to leave that life behind her, she did take on a very cold persona while attending classes, which if anyone remembered her, would call her Ice Queen even though she's got a fiery temper and is fairly scrappy. Survival is all she knows and continues to display that as she comes off as not very friendly or very blunt to others which she uses to hide how she really is from others. Which would be that she's a sweet girl that's a hopeless romantic that loves small and cute things. She tends to be very combative with men that she finds to be idiotic and mostly very quiet and reserved around women and men she respects.

Name: Yamato Akinari
Appearance:
(Ignore the Captain's Jacket. He isn't a captain...yet_
Age: 200
Squad/Rank: Tenth Squad/Unseated
Biography: Yamato Akinari is a deeply loyal and driven Soul Reaper, fiercely committed to the future of the Soul Society and the honor of his Clan. Duty is paramount to him, whether serving as a grunt or in command. Yamato frequently leads the charge, taking command of the situation or offering immediate aid. His unwavering dedication to training and composed demeanor enables him to make tough, decisive decisions that often shift the course of critical encounters. Yamato has little patience for gossip and slander, especially when someone tarnishes another's reputation behind their back like a coward. He believes there is a time and place for everything that needs to be said.
Yamato Akinari was born in the Soul Society to the Akinari clan, a minor noble house known for supplying a handful of Soul Reapers to the Gotei 13 over the centuries. Though never wealthy, the clan enjoyed a certain degree of respect and comfort due to their consistent contributions. Despite their efforts, the Akinari clan struggled to grow and never reached prestigious positions within the Soul Society.
Yamato was always aware that his upbringing was more privileged than most inhabitants of Rukongai. This difference was apparent when he enrolled in the Soul Reaper Academy; his swordplay, honed by a personal instructor since childhood, outclassed that of commoners. Despite this advantage, Yamato trained as hard as any other student, determined not to squander the opportunity he had been given.
The Akinari clan, though small and relatively weak, had always been loyal but unambitious. Yamato aimed to change that. To bring honor and recognition to his family name, he sought to become an incredible Soul Reaper, with his sights set on joining the First Division. He believed that directly serving under the Captain-Commander would be the greatest duty he could provide.

I actually thought of an potentially important question. Is this following the Burn the Witch extended canon of "soul society is basically just the japanese afterlife" or the original assumption that it's for the whole planet? Like is everyone who was a Whole/Plus and sent to soul society from japan, basically.
Appearance: Stands at 5'7". Lithe, athletic build, narrow bust. Long black hair, pale skin, and a baleful glare. Gives off harsh vibes as one would expect of a noble.
Age: 192
Squad/Rank: Squad Ten/Unseated
Biography: Born into the lower noble house of the Nakajima family, Ageha was raised from birth with severe expectations once her Reiatsu was sensed. The Nakajima clan had long sought glory of its own, as its heyday had long passed, with only middling Shinigami being admitted to the ranks of the Gotei from their family for generations. With this in mind, the family's latest scion was given harsh training in combat, politics, and administration practically since she could walk.
While Ageha met every expectation placed upon her, it wasn't without cost. Years of nothing but brutal instruction and relentless expectations with little in the way of proper familial support or affection rendered Ageha cold, spiteful, and hard. She entered Shin'o Academy with this mindset, making few friends, more than a few enemies, and excelling in Zanjutsu and Hohou in particular.
Ageha graduated, pleasing her family. But unbeknowst to them, she'd long since decided to go her own way. The instant she left the Academy, all contact from her ceased. Restoring the glory of the Nakajima clan meant nothing to her. Not after what they had put her through. It had worked, to be certain. But that wasn't her problem. She'd find her own purpose. And she'd find it within the Gotei. There wasn't anywhere else for her to go, and frankly, she did enjoy actually utilizing the abilities she'd spent so long honing.
