Newhope

Newhope: Population 500 Million - the eleventh planet in the Georgia system. It is orbited by three moons: The Commons, Splendor, and Godfors Aken. Set equal distance between two territories - Patience's Whitefall that orbits Athens and Ezra: Niska's territory. A world with a high amount of water, it is a center of trade, vacation spots, crops, and more. A modest planet compared to Core Worlds, it is extravagant compared to Border Planets. A hub where anything can be found and a lot of things lost. The perfect place to get rid of a ship and get a new one if needed. The Alliance steers clear of this world when they can. Patience isn't an issue since she keeps her own moon but Niska is another story and not even the Alliance want to cross him out here.

It took three days for the Reavers to clear enough to give the Retribution a chance to make a break for it. Tensions had been high on the vessel but nothing had broken out, at least no one had fought. Harper was in control of the bridge and while Anisa didn't trust him as much as he trusted Daphne the man was a better pilot when it came to an Alliance vessel, it would have been foolish not to have him in the lead there. That and Daphne was immature, even for her age. She was 26, no longer a child, she needed to stop huffing around like one. It was something Anisa intended to speak with Dorothy about but was putting it off until the boat landed and they could let people go their way if they chose to.

Atticus had spent the majority of his time over the last few days hanging out in the Barbershop. Partly just because Foy was interesting to be around, part of that was because he wanted to see what was going on with the crew of the ship, both sides of it. It seemed a barber shop would be the best place to get gossip and see if people slipped. That and the fact that the night Anisa seized control of the Retribution, before she turned in for the night, he was instructed to not take his eyes off the Alliance crew. Something was not sitting right with her and she wasn't sure if it was Foy, Jahosafat, or Harper. Either way, between herself and the crew of the Vengeance, none of them had allowed any members of the Alliance crew to be alone together. Even pulling in the help of Gideon, Gene, Lionel.

Once they were out of so called harms way the boat landed on Newhope. Anisa had made sure that certain members were escorted off the boat as quickly as possible and sent on their way. Others had chosen to remain. It was a skeleton crew beyond skeleton crew now. They needed new people and she still wasn't sure if Foy and Harper were going to remain with the crew. Jahosafat, after a two day drinking binge decided to stay, for Camilla. He wanted to finish his work, at least enough to stop the Alliance but he couldn't do that under the watchful eye of the Alliance. They would take whatever research he had and use it as a weapon. He wasn't going to have that. Once he sobered up, all bets were off. He was in the med bay nearly day and night hunched over samples, and collecting blood, tissue, and brain matter from one of his "frozen" Reaver popsicles.

Anisa didn't like it but if it put the Independents a step ahead of the Alliance, she would deal with it. Anisa hadn't been doing too well over the last few days. The loss of Jackson was weighing heavily on her. It is never easy for a Captain to lose a crew member, it is harder to lose that last tie to the world you grew up on. For the first time, she truly felt like an orphan without a home. Her planet was scorched, her childhood friend gone, her ship left to rust. Now she was about to sell the ship she had taken over and buy something else.

At least that was her plan for the day, once she found out what Harper decided. She knew what Daphne could pilot, she had a good idea of what Harper was capable of in the drivers seat. Who stayed and who went would help her decide what to pick up. Standing outside of the retribution Anisa looked around, the sun was out, it was still early but it had risen. The air was cool and decent. A nice change from Whitefall. People were coming and going and she watched them. She was waiting on a trader, to start talking prices.

The drop had gone off without a hitch s far as she was concerned. At least once they got there it wasn't a problem. Payment was made. Anisa did something she didn't normally do, she shared the wealth more than what was agreed upon. In the end she had nothing from the trip but she let that go, she had a ship to sell. One that she could charge a pretty price for. Her standard crew got double, even those that were getting leaving. The Alliance crew even got a share. Not as much as her own but enough for the amount of time they were part of her crew. Anisa had paid Harper a little more than the rest of the Alliance crew but that was to cover the fruit that was taken without his permission. Anisa was a bitch but she wasn't unfair.

While Anisa waited outside, the wind kicking up her hair Jahosafat was passed out on one of the med bay bed. He had been working the last 24 hours straight and ended up deciding he needed a quick nap. He had only been asleep an hour or two, lord only knew when he would wake up. Atticus was already in the Barber shop, flipping through his bible while sucking on a hard candy, the wapper sticking out of his front jacket pocket.

Dorothy Pender

Location: Medical Bay ---> Outside the Retribution

In some ways it felt a bit strange to Dorothy, moving from planet to planet in the Georgia System. They had left Whitefall and landed in Newhope, and at moments, she felt the closeness of her home planet. Boros wasn't more than a day's flying away, and if she closed her eyes, she could still see her drunken father, slouched up against a table. It wasn't a pleasant memory to have, but she remembered other things about Boros. She remembered the time she spent with her little sister. Those were the good memories.

Of course, Dorothy knew that Daphne was immature for her age...but she was soft on her sister. She would feel almost hypocritical to not be, as much as she logically knew that Daphne would need to mature eventually, especially to be an aid to the Independent cause. She still saw her sister as the sweet little girl on Boros, struggling to make by with an abusive and alcoholic father. It made perfect sense to her that Daphne was moody--she had a good reason to be.

She had entered the medical bay half an hour prior, only to find the medical lead, Jahosafat, passed out in one of the medical bay beds. While she didn't care for the excessive drinking he did earlier as part of his grieving process, she took more issue with his research. In Dorothy's opinion, no good could come of it. Learning how to harness the reavers as weapons, how to civilize them, whatever it was called...She got a sick feeling in her stomach just thinking about it. Had the research been a means to cure the reavers, to bring them back humanity or at least put them to rest, she could have felt morally at ease with it. But those were simply her own thoughts.

Dorothy sighed slightly. The medical bay was quiet and she was no longer in charge of it. Her compulsive nature to organize and reorganize would have to wait. As it was, Jahosafat would likely appreciate some quiet--the man was in desperate need of sleep, from what Dorothy could tell. She then pulled her hair back into a bun and quietly left the medical bay, making her way outside. Anisa was supposed to be meeting with a trader that morning, and knowing that her friend had had a rough past couple of days, Dorothy made her way outside.

"Captain," Dorothy greeted once she saw Anisa.

William Harper

Location: Retribution, Quarters -> Outside the Retribution

Well, no one else died. That was a good thing at least. While there was a very definite feeling of a lack of purpose, not to mention his oppressive absence of options right then, Harper could console himself with the fact that, upon landing, he was not immediately turned over to the authorities as was hinted by Anisa just three days prior. It didn't inspire immediate loyalty, not being sold out, but it was a small comfort. His tension would have been higher were they on a more Alliance-friendly world. Harper wasn't out from under the thumb of the Alliance yet. Until he was, someone would always have the means to manipulate him. Perhaps it was a stupid decision, entrusting his past to this Browncoat. He saw a possible opening and took a risk, hoping that it would pan out in his favor. If nothing else, he was a talented pilot and engineer, with technical skills that he could use for trade wherever he went. Especially this far away from the Core, where people of his education were even rarer, Harper suspected that he would land on his feet.

Then Anisa paid him. That was unexpected. Plus a bit extra to cover his lost property. Between this and his identity's last paycheck, it was a fresh start, if he wanted it. But it probably still wasn't enough to get a decent, long-range ship from this world that didn't have something horribly wrong with it, and he didn't feel like getting stuck here for very long. However, the ship was being sold off. The I.A.V. Retribution was not going to be his home for the last two years of his term of service. He had to pack. It wouldn't take long, he had carried everything that he owned with him when he boarded.

As he put away his gear and personals, a couple of thoughts occurred to him. For starters, he would have to get rid of his Alliance equipment. Maybe keep a uniform and a couple of papers hidden someplace, as it may prove useful later, but the vast majority would have to go. This meant that he'd have to re-outfit himself before they left the planet. New clothes, new sidearm, everything. Except his tools, at any rate; and especially his wrench. Had to keep that wrench. Another idea, he might not have to abandon his Harper persona after all. If he kept under the radar with these people, he could easily go to any Alliance outpost after his term was up and claim that he was a captive during that time. He'd likely regain access to his identity's monies again, with interest, and one hell of a P.O.W. bonus besides. Harper could retire (understandably) with honor, and move on with his life without being under the yoke of the Alliance anymore. It was a plan. If it looked like it wouldn't work out, he could always go back to Plan B.

Packing done in a couple of minutes, Harper quickly changed into less official engineer's coveralls. He left his cases just inside of his quarters and made for the exterior of the vessel, to find Dorothy and Anisa standing outside, watching the ebb and flow of humanity in the cool morning air. Harper took a deep breath, and strode to the two of them. If they accepted him, he would be addressing his two new commanding officers.

Harper effected a salute, intoning "Ma'am." to Dorothy, and "Captain." to Anisa. "I'm in. I will require a little latitude for this to work out right. You know why, Captain. Otherwise, I'm your man."

Foy Coiffeur

Location: Foy-er

Foy had his own cross to bear, as it were, getting his supplies together. His personals were already handled, packed and ready to go, including his extensive wardrobe and selection of hats. With the exception of his Callahan, the odd gentleman made sure to keep himself fully armed at all times. This day of packing was no different. He cursed the timing on the dismissal of the Alliance crew; though he made excellent use of them getting all of his professional gear packed neatly away and personals moved to an accessible central location, he still had to go through the monotonous task of itemizing and shuffling away all of his sundries. Then, of course, thee was the question of relocating his vintage Barber's Chair. That would require the grav dolly and some patience.

Likely, he would have to do it himself, too. Such was the curse of being one of two, maybe three people who could appreciate things of this nature. "Ah, Yoe-y..." he mused aloud, thinking of that one Yeoman whose hair he was trimming when Jahosafat made his initial appearance on the scene, "Wherever have you gotten off to, now that manual labor is a requisite? It is for shame. Mayhap I should track you down before time takes you too far from the vessel and contract you as a houseboy... Hmm..."

Foy still wasn't sure what he should do. He didn't want to leave his friend and fellow Dapper Gentryman behind, not in his state. But his own contract with the Alliance had run its course. He would weave a tale of the ship being taken over and him bribing his way to get to the next port of call, collect his money, and be on his way. And speaking of money, the Browncoat lady did win some points with him by giving over a share of the profits from the last venture, even though he referred to it as merely: "Walking-around cash, of course. But my gratitude. I did mean to replace a handkerchief or two." In his defense, he did tend to spend a bit of money on luxuries. If almost defined him. Considering his options in that moment, he could easily charter a cruise to someplace warm and green, vacation for a while. He felt that he greatly deserved it, considering the insufferably mediocre people he was forced to deal with during his most recent time with the Alliance. But these Browncoats, though sorely lacking in funds, seemed tons more interesting.

Then another thought hit him: This could be an opportunity. His financial resources, which he would have to massively shuffle, even to the point of cutting himself off from a good portion of the family fortune, coupled with his business connections, put him in a unique position to make use of a bunch of non-tethered outlaws, even as they might make use of a former Agent like himself. Naturally, there was still Josie to think about. Either way, he would have to leave the Retribution in an hour or two, as it was being sold off soon. The others would have to secure their own transportation, likely another ship (though not as "grand" as this, he wagered). The Respectable Mr. Foy Coiffeur would make his decision then, unless circumstances forced him to do so earlier.

Newhope

Atticus looked up from the page of the bible he was reading, Revelations. His eyes peering over the top of the book towards Foy as he sucked on the piece of formerly wrapped candy. "Will you be leaving us or will be you one of the souls I will need to keep an eye on from here on out?" Atticus chuckled as he closed his bible and stuck it into the front inside pocket of his coat. Rising from the chair he straightened his coat and buttoned a single button.

"Not that the Captain would admit it but we could use another gun. Camilla was our previous. Can't promise that things will always be profitable and we won't be visiting the most advanced cities but I can promise you that the lord provides. Usually in exciting and ever new ways. It is never a dull moment. And where ever we go you can rest assured that there will be more than a handful of people needing your services. Either of them. Adventure is only a step in the right direction," Atticus said as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Plus if you don't come with us, just think of the horrible state my fine facial hair will return to without you to keep things perfect?"

Out on the dock Anisa rested her hands on her hips and gave Dorothy a glance out of the corner of her eye. Doc," she said with a slight nod. "Everything packed up for the move once we are ready? Remember, we are taking nothing from the ship. I don't want them to be able to trace any medical equipment or anything else for that matter if we get boarded later on in our new vessel. Can you make sure to double check everything people are setting aside to take with them?" Anisa asked. She wanted to have things double checked. "Then get it loaded up into the holding dock I rented while we are here. I am expecting a three day layover here on Newhope at least."

Thing was Anisa knew she could get them a ship today after the sale but she wanted to give everyone a day or two to unwind. The way she had laid things out it would take longer but it would keep the crew that was remaining with her busy while she dealt with the sale and purchase alone. She didn't want any of them with her. It was a captains thing. It would be their home but it would be her ship. She didn't want others poking their nose into her business and as long as she was captain, it was her business and her business alone.

Glancing over at Harper she listened to what he said and nodded. Seemed he and Jahosafat had decided to stay, Gideon as well. so she had medical, a pilot, an engineer, and a second in command. She knew Atticus would remain with her but she wondered if Daphne would as well. As far as Foy went she had no idea. "Right, make sure your bags are packed and then report back to me. Going to send you and a few others into town to get provisions for when we leave. Dorothy can help you get a lit of what we need together. Will need costs laid out and then report back. Once the sale is final and a new ship is purchased we will work out the logistics and make final purchases."

Daphne Pender

Location: Outside Retribution

Over the past few days, Daphne had been sitting around doing nothing. She was all too happy to get off the ship when they reached Newhope. Being cooped up on board the ship and working with Alliance people all the way was not pleasant, especially when she still wasn't really flying the ship. She had gotten used to the idea of Harper flying instead of her, but she would still rather be at the helm.

She eventually found herself standing outside of the ship. Daphne saw her sister talking with the Captain, and she noticed Harper standing there as well. She contemplated walking over to see what they were doing, but decided against it. She would rather walk around, and look at the area. Being stuck on the ship while everything was being moved around was not her idea of a good time. Daphne walked away from the ship and into the town, to see if she wanted to buy anything while she was there, and knew that it was probably best if she stayed out of the way.

Location: Outside the Retribution ---> Inside; the Medical Bay

Dorothy nodded at her captain. The time they spent waiting out the reavers had given Dorothy plenty of opportunity to pack her own things, creating a complicated by intuitive organization system for her belongings. Her obsessive need for organization was a benefit there. And from what she knew, most everyone on the ship had either packed then or just finished up today. It'd be necessary for them to finish, at any rate, with the sale of the ship and the purchase of a new one.

"Believe so, Captain," Dorothy answered, as to whether everything was packed up. "I'll get right on that," she then replied, agreeing to go through a do a final check of everyone's belongings. She couldn't deny that she wished she could take some of the Alliance medical equipment with them, but Anisa was right. It wouldn't end well and Dorothy wasn't going to disobey her captain. She could only hope that no one on the ship would pose an issue.

A three day layover did sound nice, Dorothy couldn't help but muse. It'd be a good time to stretch her legs and explore a little bit, as well as take a bit of time to enjoy just being alive. She glanced over at Harper, fighting the impulse to salute back at him as he approached. She tried to avoid falling back into Alliance military habits. She raised a bit of an eyebrow at Harper's implication, since she was still unaware of the entire situation. All she knew was that there was definitely something funny going on, but if it didn't bother Anisa, then it didn't bother her. It wasn't her business, anyways.

She listened to Anisa's instructions to Harper, though her eye was caught by Daphne heading off the ship, and making her way into town. She bit her lip ever so slightly, hoping that her sister had at least finished packing before she left. And if she hadn't, Dorothy figured she'd just finish up for her. She hoped that her sister would be staying with them, and if Daphne elected to leave the crew, odds were Dorothy would follow her sister. It was a tough choice that she hoped she wouldn't have to make.

"Captain, Harper," Dorothy nodded, before heading back into the ship. She bit her lip slightly, deciding between checking in on Atticus and Foy, or going to try to get Jahosafat up and moving. She nearly wanted a coin to flip, in order to make the decision for her. She sighed a bit before heading into the medical bay, knocking twice on the door in an attempt to alert Jahosafat to her presence.

"Doc, you up? You packed?" Dorothy asked, hoping that the man was awake and coherent. Her plan B, after all, would be to spray him with water and she doubted his suit would appreciate that.

Foy Coiffeur

Location: Foy-er

Foy paused in his efforts to pack away the contents of his Foy-er to look at Atticus. "What an interesting series of questions and observations you submit there, Psalms. While it is true that I am motivated by the Lure of the Coin, my good sir, it is not the only ambition for which I strive." Methodically, the dapper gent went through his selection of natural coffees, deciding what he could bear to part with. Nothing that he owned was of Alliance origin, from his buttons to his munitions, but there did weigh upon the horrible thought that, lacking options, he might have to leave some things behind. Perhaps he could argue his point that no traces of their presence should be noted... but that seemed very weak a reason. No, unless he could charter an extra room for his belongings or fit them into a cargo hold for safekeeping until he got wherever he was going to be, he would have to figure something out.

"You see, it is the mark of any good businessman to open new opportunities for trade and travel, you see. Out-of-the way-spots might be useful for raw materials on the cheap. Middle Class accommodating planets become potential consumer areas. Locating the right manner of ruffian can net a man a preexisting, discreet network for transporting one's goods, if need arose. Profitable? No sir. Profit is where one establishes it." Was he trying to talk himself into this? He would be a smarter man to cut his losses, eat up the cost of his equipment's transport (or leave it behind for the vultures), and make his way back to Farraday to plot his next big venture or wait for another contract to seek him out. Maybe lay low with a woman or three and get a little 'stache action going. But here he was, contemplating leaving the extreme security of home and business to have a sideways, There And Back Again style adventure. "...in a palace on Farraday, there lived a Coiffeur..."

"Besides, I am already a wealthy man. Even if I lose everything I possess personally, my family is still wealthy. I daresay, even if I find my liquid currency curtailed by such quaint concepts as "going underground", I could still finance a decent sized ship's fuel and ration needs well enough to keep a crew healthy and flying for a good, long while. Though truth be mentioned, I would much rather keep myself running in little luxuries; life's comforts, if you take my meaning." Luxuries such as his elaborate barber's chair and Londinium Brandy, for instance. Well, the brandy, certainly, as well as the wrapped candies. The chair... That was a business draw.

"You see, despite handsome training with various agencies and my capability to withstand hardship in many forms, I am quite the confirmed hedonist." Yet still he thought it over. Why? It made no sense. He was a mercenary and an Upper Class one at that. Farraday aristocracy. Touring around the 'Verse with people like this could cause harm to his reputation. But it could also give him access to places he otherwise could not go. New experiences to be had. And he could take these people places they otherwise would not be welcome. Cotillions. Traders' Meets. Shindigs. Having the financial power to keep them in the Black during rough periods would mean that they might be obliged to him on occasion. But if only he could upgrade his accommodations. This was not fully ideal, and they were ditching this ship for something probably lesser in overall "Wow Factor".

Foy sighed. He was pretty much done packing, anyway. Time to shove off. Only a few trips with the grav dolly were necessary, three perhaps, and he could hire ground transport from the dock easily. "I tell you, Vicar, that my interest in your venture is piqued. But I fear that I require just a hair's breadth more incentive to commit to contract. Tell me something compelling. Best me in a wager. You religious types are fond of signs, yes? Any one might suffice. But for now, either route I take will involve offloading my personals to the dock below us. Would it be too terrible an imposition to ask for your assistance?"

William Harper

Location: Outside the Retribution -> Quarters -> Outside the Retribution

"Right away, Captain." responded Harper, throwing a fast salute and jogging back into the ship. Harper had already packed. It was too easy; he owned very little, and even less now that he had to get rid of anything that came from that ship. Harper had secured his belongings from Persephone, almost completely, with the exception of a series of personal effects and weaponry that belonged to his identity's original owner. He had ditched the personal effects and had to acquire more uniforms planetside, but nothing he now possessed could be traced back to the I.A.V. Retribution.

He remembered what seemed like so long ago, walking toward the ship for the first time. He was very much the Lieutenant, standing tall and authoritative, either wearing everything he owned or pulling it in a case behind him. It would be exactly how he left the ship, probably for the last time, except that his authority was much lessened, and instead of a crisp Alliance Officer's uniform, he would be in black and grey utility coveralls, and having intentionally let his facial hair stubble him up somewhat. At least in these, his large wrench looked less conspicuous; it found a perfect nestling spot by his side in a long tool pocket with secure closure.

As Harper picked up his bags and started back toward the exterior hatch via cargo, he had to permit himself a small chuckle. The thought of hiding out with a group of outlaws for two years and then returning as a released prisoner set to retire from service hadn't quite been part of the plan, but it really couldn't hurt any. Anything over a year, and he would have been subject to consideration by a promotions board. Hell, he might retire with two years of back pay as a Captain for all he knew. Not bad at all. That'd serve those bastards right. Deny him a life, he'd just take one back from them. With interest. It wasn't a bad plan.

Still standing straight and tall, Harper returned to where Anisa stood, outside of the vessel. He waited next to his gear, what little of it there was, for Dorothy's return to go through it all. We mustn't have anything listed as contraband, a classification now ironically given to anything originating from the lawful presence of the Retribution. "It seems that I will have to do a bit of shopping, Captain. A lot of my belongings are issued by the military. I don't suppose you can recommend a good gunsmith on this rock, can you?"

Newhope

It took everything in Anisa not to draw her weapon and fire a warning shot to land at Daphne's feet as she strolled off. It was gross insubordination as it's worst. Especially now. They needed to pack, clear out the ship, and more. And the girl just wandered off. Not girl, a twenty-six year old woman. Didn't inform her Captain or her second in command where she was going. Didn't Gene just pull that a few days ago and nearly get killed?

There were a thousand and one things to do on the ship and Daphne had not lifted a finger. If it didn't involved flying she didn't seem to think there was anything to do. What made matters worse was Dorothy didn't do anything about it either. Just let her waltz off. She was second in command, she was supposed to handle the crew as well. In fact she was to be in charge while Anisa was dealing with the sale. Yet she just turned and let her sister wander off and did nothing.

Anisa stood there fuming as the sisters walked off in their own directions and Harper went to do what he was supposed to do. The Alliance member was proving to be more responsible and trust worthy than her own staff, her so called crew, people she had taken a bullet for. The woman was going to break something or someone very soon.

As Harper came back she gritted her teeth. "Pollocks, tell him Anisa sent you. Down in Haven District. But don't go anywhere yet." It was obvious Anisa had gone from business to kill mode in the time it had taken Harper to pack. "You might want to go through our former crew members things, Camilla. She had a collection." Anisa was trying not to lose it. It was not the time.

"Watch for our buyer. I have to deal with something. If you hear gun fire, you were promoted to second in command." It was blunt and cold as she spoke. Turning on her heels and storming off into the ship.

As she did Atticus gave Foy a thoughtful look, he was right. People in his line of work were supposed to be gifted with gab and the ability to get people to have faith. Atticus was a different sort of Preacher though. "Dorothy! Captain's office! Now!" Anisa's voice rang out over the ships intercom. There was no disguising the anger in her voice.

Atticus looked up and chuckled. "Simplest way I can put it, it is never a dull moment. Give it until the next planet and have a little faith. A man such as yourself never wants to live with regrets," he said lightly as he took a hold of a few of Foys items that were packed up. "And not at all, be glad to help."

Whether Jahosafat was up or not was up for debate but the yelling of Anisa through the com was enough to rouse the dead and he suddenly sat up straight. Eyes wide open and if he had a tail it would have been very bushy. Jumping Jahosafat. His nick name seemed to fit him very well. Looking around wildly he spotted Dorothy standing there and cleared his throat as he adjusted his vest. "I dare say Miss, it would seem you are being paged." He sat there for a moment frozen before standing up quickly and beginning to gather his things. The man was odd but at least he seemed on task, as best as one could from being roused from a dead sleep that way. The water probably would have been a kinder way to wake up.

Anisa leaned back against the Captains desk with her arms crossed over her chest. In her mind she kept telling herself to be calm but calm was not really in her vocabulary.

Location: the Medical Bay ---> the Captain's Office

Dorothy's head snapped in the direction of the intercom as she heard Anisa's voice. The anger in it made Dorothy's stomach churn and for a moment, she felt quite ill. She wasn't entirely sure what set Anisa off this time, but given that the Captain wasn't outside dealing with the buyer, it couldn't have been anything good. She sighed slightly, trying to mentally prepare herself for whatever had gotten Anisa worked up. Perhaps the deal had gone sour, she figured. But at the same time, she figured there was a decent chance it had to do with her sister.

"Yes, it would seem so," Dorothy agreed quietly, feeling perhaps a bit bad for Jahosafat. Maybe she had judged him too harshly before, but the man seemed more peculiar than prone to alcoholism. She was grateful that he had set about packing, since they didn't need any more trouble that day. "Just remember--we can't take anything that's Alliance. Nothing that could be tracked or identified."

And then, steeling her nerves, Dorothy left the medical bay and headed for the Captain's Office. She could only hope that Anisa would be calm, but she had heard her friend's voice ring out over the intercom. That wasn't how a calm Anisa sounded. Once she reached the Captain's Office, Dorothy knocked on the door, waiting for Anisa to tell her to enter.

"Captain? You wanted to see me?" Dorothy called out, letting Anisa know that it was her standing outside the door.

Daphne Pender

Location: Outside Retribution

Daphne enjoyed the idea of being on a planet where their wasn't someone who probably was trying to kill you. Sure, there probably were some Alliance personnel on the planet, and knowing their recent string of good fortune would probably run into them, it was nothing like Whitefall which was practically in the middle of nowhere. The idea with being with civilization just made her smile. She was pretty sure that she should be back helping out on the ship, but she couldn't really think of what she could possibly do without getting in the way.

She looked back at the Alliance ship that they had landed in. She figured that a few members of the crew were going to stick around, but to be honest she kind of wished that Harper was leaving. The idea of not being the main pilot, of being shuffled off to mainly pulling the night watch was annoying. She at least understood the decision behind it, Harper was older and probably more experienced as a pilot, but it didn't make her feel any better. Daphne was never going to be able to get used to the idea of working with him, but unfortunately luck declared that she was going to have to live with it, whether she wanted to or not.

William Harper

Location: Outside the Retribution -> Cargo

Harper could hear the commotion over the PA. It was faint(ish) from outside of the ship, but what with the cargo door open to facilitate movement, it could be heard that the new Captain was rather upset and demanded an audience with the very lady he was waiting on. Naturally, he wasn't sure what to make of her last comment before she left, promising a promotion in the event that gunfire broke out. It was a little troubling. But, he had hitched his wagon to these people for at least the next two years. That was the plan now. Stay out from under the Alliance's scrutiny with these people, reemerge as a released P.O.W., retire as a Captain at thirty-five. Then do whatever the hell he wanted to, even if that meant becoming a dedicated Browncoat. Though in truth, he'd rather retire on a border planet somewhere. Not too far away from tech and convenience, not too close to the Core and their agenda. Persephone, maybe. That rock looked inviting.

But he digressed. The wait for Dorothy would be a bit longer than expected, and Anisa did tell him to hold fast for the potential buyer. Harper had a streak of impatience milling in the back of his mind, having been given permission to search the belongings of their former crewmate to replace his Alliance issue sidearms. It was rather like waiting for Christmas morning, seeing what he might unwrap. Harper did not consider himself a "gun person", persay, though he understood the necessity of staying armed in this part of the 'Verse; how it tied directly with survival. Besides that, his training with the Alliance Military gave him familiarity with all manner of firearms. While no master marksman, Harper passed all of his practical examinations with marksmanship well enough, and had a little combat experience to boot. Ditching his present gun was a prudent move. He most certainly did not want to be caught holding a weapon with a serial number and shot signature issued to a Black Ship crewmember.

Until this business with Dorothy and the Captain was over, Harper was just going to hang around until one or both of them decided to return. Unless something pressing came up, anyway. Hopefully, the buyer would arrive in the next three seconds, followed by Anisa over the course of the next three. Then he could have his Christmas morning.

Foy Coiffeur

Location: Foy-er -> Cargo Bay

Meanwhile, as the PA barked at Dorothy, Foy found himself participating in the wonder of manual labor, carrying his own things down below for what would likely be very upsetting poking and prodding, shuffling through his things (none of which were Alliance in the least) in a manner that he would find quite disagreeable. But, it was the price one paid, living the high life and then suddenly getting sucked into speaking glibly with a Shepherd as he made an effort to recruit him into some cause or another. At least the Man of the Cloth was giving him an assist, carrying his belongings down below.

As they dropped off the first load near the loading ramp, Foy stepped outside to retrieve the grav dolly, looking to Harper with a curious expression. "You're certainly settling in with the riffraff quite fluidly, are you not? Hmm..." There was something about that man that he didn't quite trust, but that intrigued him. This man was hiding something. He had to know.

Foy smiled, waving his hand dismissively at the man as if he were merely joking, and then returned to Atticus in the Cargo hold. "Yes, my good man. I shall strike a bargain with you, Leviticus: You exercise whichever manner of businesslike influence you may have upon your dear Captain, mainly to ensure that my professionals, intimates, and personals all find space in whatever boat she intends to acquire; further that said space is liberally adequate for a professional such as myself can ply his trade with ample elbow room, and I sir, shall give you until your next planet, as you so eloquently discussed earlier. Though I must do some dealing in the nearest civilized polis on hasty condition beforehand. Have we an accord, sir?"

Foy removed his bowler cap and extended his hand to the Preacher. He flashed a quick smile. "Have we?"

Newhope

"Yes, we need to talk," Anisa stated bluntly through clenched teeth. It was obvious she was trying to refrain from going all out ballistic at this point. The captain rarely tried to keep her cool, she was known for her fast talk and her outbursts. It was common on any ship she was in charge of. Her trying to reel it back was not and a bit disturbing to tell the truth. The fact she had even bothered to call someone to her office instead of just barging in wherever the person she was about to chew out was never happened. She just tore into them in front of god and everyone, hardly anyone was ever granted a private reaming away from peering eyes and loose lips.

Dorothy was different though, they were friends. More than that they were best friends. They had been through a lot together and even though when Dorothy had first been hired Anisa swore she would never fully trust her she had grown to. With her own life and that of her crew. It was the only reason she was trying to keep from just being full out "Anisa" right then. "Sit down." It wasn't a request, it was an order, plain and simple.

Once Dorothy had come into the room fully Anisa pushed off the desk and shut the door. Pacing slightly she tried to figure out how to say what she had to say without threatening to put Dorothy through an open air lock once they reached the black, that was her go to threat when anyone did anything she didn't agree with. Turning she looked over to her probably only friend still alive and breathing.

"You need to decide if you are going to continue to be second in command of this ship or if you are going to leave," she finally said locking eyes with Dorothy. "Daphne just left the ship, without word. Without permission. We have a shit ton of work to do and she just left. No one leaves without the Captains or the Second in Commands permission, ever. We have seen what happens when people do. Gene is the most recent example." Anisa's voice was shaky as she spoke, her knuckles white as she tried not to let off a slew of curses in both Chinese and English.

"You should have stopped her ad got her ass back on the ship. I don't care if she is your kid sister. She is 26 years old and needs to start acting like it. And you need to stop treating her like a sister and like an employee. You out rank her, she has to follow your orders, she had to get your permission. She cannot just waltz about like she can get away with anything. That is why she is no longer in control of the bridge and why I have placed Harper in charge of flight. I trust him to follow orders, I don't her."

Anisa took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to calm herself, she knew she was about to lose it. Swallowing down the anger she spoke again. "So, you have two choices. Both of you pack your bags or soon as she gets back you punish her. Reprimand her like Jackie would have." Saying Jackson's name out loud caused Anisa to choke up but she fought it. Turning away and taking a deep breath. "She might be your sister but you are second now. That means the ship and the entire crew comes first, beyond any thing else. Even personal ties."

Keeping her back to Dorothy she couldn't even look at her right then. She knew what she was ordering was a lot. Jackson had been the closest to her than anyone but she had had to put the ship first, the whole crew. Not just him. It wasn't easy but it had to be done. As soon as one person was placed over them all that was when things fell apart and it was about time Daphne started acting like an adult instead of a teenager with an attitude. "You have until the new ship is purchased to decide. Dismissed." Her last words barely croaked out but she managed. She didn't move, just standing there with her back to Dorothy. She would kick them off the ship if she had to. She didn't want to but if Daphne couldn't grow up and Dorothy couldn't stop coddling her, it was best they were not with them for the next leg of their journey. They would be safer that way.

Atticus in the meantime nearly burst out laughing at first and by the time Foy finished talking all bets were off. He was rolling with laughter and so much he had to sit down on a crate while he held his mid section and tears of joy came from his eyes. "You want me to make demands? For you? With the Captain? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Sweet baby Jesus, the devil himself wouldn't even try that shit. Jesus would tell you fuck off," he said between the guffaws. Oh it was the best thing he had heard in a decade. "I may have a lot of vices dear sir but I am no ignoramus. I'd rather walk buck naked slathered in honey right into a Reaver den, my chances of survival would be higher."

The preacher couldn't stop laughing, slipping from the crate and onto the ground, still chuckling and it hurt. He hadn't laughed this hard since he was a little girl. He knew Anisa would hire the man if he wanted it, that he would have lodging and a place to shave people. Asking for more room than the others? For treatment as it were, he knew wouldn't go over. "She'll give you the same space she gives the rest of us, that I can get you. You want more, you gotta ask her. I ain't serving myself up with a silver platter for her to put my head on. As far as Anisa is concerned, you are on the same rung as me and that is about ten steps below the rung she puts herself on and five below Dorothy."

Outside there was still no sign of the buyer but he wasn't due for another twenty to thirty minutes. Or at least he had that much time before Anisa would go find another. She didn't take people being late. She had told the man a certain time but in her mind she wanted him there actually an hour later. Why she had been standing outside. To see and judge the man by the time he showed up. Gave her a gauge of how much she could trust him.

Things in the city where they had landed were busy but calm at least. Various bars were open, shops, and the like. People mulling about, going this way and that. The weather was good for being out and about. Clear skies, cool air, calm winds. A nice change from Whitefall and other places like it. There were hotels that catered to high end and low alike. People were trading on the streets and in the shops, and behind them as well. The dock was full of people trying to get passage from one planet to another cheaper than the ship next to them. Most though were avoiding the Alliance Ship the Retribution. Not cause any of them knew it was stolen but because it was Alliance.

Dorothy Pender

Location: the Captain's Office

Dorothy entered the room after Anisa explained that they needed to talk. Her mind was on high alert and her body still felt a bit nauseous as she nodded and took a seat. She didn't know quite what to expect, with Anisa's usual method of discipline being immediate and public, such as what had happened with Genevieve a few days prior. And while the Captain was her best friend, Dorothy didn't expect any special treatment from her. Her days in the military had taught her that when dealing with superiors.

It was then that it dawned on her that she, hypocritically, had given special treatment to her sister. As Anisa finished her pacing and turned around to face her, Dorothy did not make any attempt to avoid eye contact. She listened to her friend, her captain, and felt her stomach churn once more. The more Anisa spoke, the more deeply ashamed Dorothy felt. Dorothy nodded as Anisa spoke, understanding and internalizing her words. If she had not been brave, she perhaps would have crumbled in front of her captain and shed remorseful tears.

Dorothy's heart bled for her friend as Anisa said Jackson's name. She knew that it was hard and difficult on the Captain, to lose someone so close. Dorothy didn't know what she would do if either Daphne or Anisa had been in Jackson's place. She nodded once more as Anisa said that the ship and the crew had to trump personal ties. It had been foolish of her to shrink away from reprimanding her sister.

And while Dorothy didn't know if she could discipline as well as Jackson could, she realized then that she would have to try. She had spent almost her entire life coddling Daphne, doing her very best to protect her. But letting her little sister act like a child wouldn't help Daphne in the long run. It would only set Daphne up for failure, it would put her sister's life in danger.

"I'm sorry, Captain," Dorothy said as she was dismissed, and she rose from her seat. "I'll reprimand her to the best of my abilities, ma'am." She paused for a moment, and then left the Captain's Office, trying to remember every punishment technique she had ever seen Jackson use.

Mei Qiáo

Location: Newhope - Docks

Mei eyed the Alliance ship closely. While the others at the docks gave it a wide berth, due to the fact it was an Alliance vessel, she stared at it as if it was about to speak to her. Crowds milled around her as she did so. She noticed a woman who got off the ship. She seemed annoyed, turning back to look at the ship as if she was deciding something.

Mei opened her commlink and read the file again. In terms of information, it was sparse. In fact, all it said was that an Alliance ship had made its way to Newhope. However small a lead it was, she had to follow it. Her best bet just left the ship. She eyed the woman closely as she began to follow her, blending into the crowd as she walked. Mei noticed the woman wasn't dressed in typical Alliance garb. That surprised her. Mei was used to being unseen and unheard, it's how she lived her life and how she had survived up until this point. While she didn't feel this situation was dangerous, one never knew. For all she knew, a gunfight could occur in the streets. Perhaps the rebels will attack the Alliance ship? Who knew? Either way, she followed the woman. Perhaps this would give her some new information, perhaps not. If all else failed, she knew where the ship was and could get aboard if she needed to.

Daphne Pender

Location: The Town

She knew that she needed to be on the ship and helping pack everything up, but being able to walk around the town and be in civilization made her forget all about it. Daphne enjoyed looking around to see everything around her. She took in the sites, and was careful not to bump into anyone, she never liked the idea of getting into a fight just because she stepped on someone accidentally. She wondered what was going on back on the ship, but she didn't truly think to go back and find out.

After a while though, Daphne stepped off to the side, so that others could get by her. She took in the sites all around her, all the people. She wondered what their stories were, and where they might be headed. So many people, with so many things to do, and so little time to do them with. Daphne enjoyed the bustling crowd, but eventually figured that it was about time to head back to the ship, and was really hoping that no one had noticed that she was gone. Even though the odds of that were really slim.

Foy Coiffeur

Location: Cargo Bay -> Foy-er

The ever dapper Foy Coiffeur raised an eyebrow at the sudden and extended outburst of mirth from the Shepherd before him. He withdrew his hand from in front of the man and put on a neutral face. When the guffaws and chortles died down, and the holy man had spoken his peace, Foy gave his moustache a twirl and returned to pushing the grav dolly. "Manners, Shepherd Pearson. Manners are what separate us from the plebeians." He stopped, looking back to Atticus, "Indeed, they are supposed to, so I must surmise the sudden change of aerospace pressure has led you to an unfortunate medical malady involving either temporary reduction of hearing or some incarnation of dementia." His voice had an edge to it that he had not previously demonstrated, even when approaching their first meeting on Whitefall, when he was ready to insert ammunition into the Browncoat crew at high velocity.

He resumed walking to the back of the Cargo Hold with the dolly, intent upon going after his Barber's Chair next. It did not stop him from continuing his thoughts on the situation, whether or not Atticus cared to continue assisting him with his belongings. "Words have meanings, sir, and though many would consider my intonation and vocabulary flowery, gilded (possibly), or something toward the more expensive of speech, I assure you that when I use phrases such as "businesslike influence" and "liberally adequate for a professional", or even the simpler to understand "ply his trade", not to mention the word "accord", that these bits of syllabic utterance are not equivalent to the more brutish concept of DEMAND."

"I was requesting your assistance and insight in the coming negotiations there, Genesis. But you are correct. I shall speak with your superior on matters of contractual professionalism from this point onward."

He continued into the gurney lift and down the corridor to his place of business, now in mid-disassembly. The most important, central piece of his parlor was the vintage-styled, adjustable Barber's Chair, a thing which he carefully loaded onto the grav dolly and strapped in lovingly. He had half a mind to set up just outside the ship while he waited on everyone else to get ready, if there were time for it. A little "strolling about cash" for the cost of disinfectant and minor styling products would be well worth it, so long as he had the time to spare.

William Harper

Location: Outside the Retribution/Newhope Docks

Harper was a fairly patient man. Moreso than most, it turned out. Living in a chunk of floating rock where the bare essentials of living were rationed (and sometimes forgotten), including such concepts as breathable air and light; well, they made a man patient. What did not settle extremely well with him was the fact that that he was feeling a little exposed out there. Granted, he looked less like the man he was pretending to be as of a week ago, but here he was in front of an Alliance ship in Newhope. Harper was afraid that he would stand out.

But, he wasn't in uniform. He had a bit of facial scruff now, and he was beginning to put a little weight back on. He was more comfortable in utility garb anyway. Now if he could find some proper clothes in the city just beyond the docks, all the better. He hadn't been to a port that didn't also have a mercantile district nearby, ever. But until then, he was going to mind his station and people watch for a while.

Newhope

Atticus couldn't but but continue to guffaw at the entire scenario. "Oh my dear Mr. Coiffer, life is about the shits and giggles. We were made to laugh and you sir are hilarious." Trying to calm himself, he still smiled. "Not in a point at him and laugh scenario but just the way you are brings such light. You are truly one of Gods greater creations. The 'verse is so much more colorful with you in it. He had a feeling Foy was just being Foy and not realizing how utterly absurd it would be to try to get anything out of the captain. Especially a new comer who hadn't done anything she felt was noble or noteworthy. Anisa was fair, across the board. Atticus knew Foy would get whatever the Captain felt like was fair, nothing more and nothing less. Any talk would do nothing to get him more than she thought he needed and that would be provided without talk but hey if he wanted to try, that was all on him.

Shaking his head, he patted Foy on the shoulder. "Best insight I can give ya is she doesn't Negotiate. Kind of like god in that respect." Chuckling he went back to work helping Foy move his things, whether or not he stayed seemed to be still up in the air but he felt if Foy did stay things were going to get very colorful very fast. He couldn't wait.

Anisa waited a few minutes after Dorothy left to move. She hoped Dorothy would take charge, she knew she would make a a good second hand if she just remembered that was what she was now. Dorothy was the only reason Anisa ever considered anyone that was former Alliance to be on the ship. Proof to her that anyone could sign up for the wrong side in the beginning. She just hoped she would get things worked out, she really didn't know what she would do if she lost another of her shipmates. If she did she would probably just send everyone but Atticus on their way and start completely fresh at the other end of the verse. It would be safer that way.

Heading back towards the cargo area and then out to the docks to find Harper and relieve him she spotted Jahosafat moving crates towards back of the ship. "What is that?"

Jahosafat stopped and handed over a slip of paper to her. Anisa took it and looked it over, eying him for a moment before nodding. "Right, make sure it gets stowed properly," she said flatly before walking off. Jahosafat just nodded, not being his usual happy self before moving on. He had been this way since Camilla had died. He was more talkative for sure right after but once it had sunk in that she was truly dead he had sunk into a quiet depression. On some level Anisa understood and could even empathize with him. So she let him be.

Walking back outside she glanced around before moving over to Harper. "I have it from here Harper. You can go and continue with your duties and such," she said not looking over to him and keeping an eye on the crowd. The buyer had ten more minutes to show up or she would be taking her business elsewhere. Pulling a cigarette from her pack she lit it and took a deep breath. Things seemed to be calm in the bustling crowd and she hoped it would remain that way. Come tomorrow, with any luck, they would have a new ship and the crew could go on leave for 24 hours before they really got back to work. But luck was never on their side.

Dorothy Pender

Location: Outside the Captain's Office ---> the Foy-er

Dorothy paused in the hallway outside of the Captain's Office for a moment, simultaneously hoping and dreading that she would run into her sister almost immediately after. She had never been in a position to give discipline before, even when she was with the Alliance. Army doctors tended to be a fairly tame group when it came to following rules, and her rank was hardly high, meaning that the need to discipline did not arise often. She didn't have an example from her parents to think back on either. Her mother cowered in fear of her father and her father lived his days either in booze or in rage.

By the time she passed the escape pods in the hallway, she had come up with two ideas for discipling her sister. The first idea would be to have Daphne polish and shine Anisa's entire shoe collection. The other was to have her sister clean the new ship from top to bottom. Physical punishment, to Dorothy, felt cruel and unnecessary. The performance of needed tasks felt like a better direction to go with it, sort of like community service of sorts. She was a doctor, after all--she didn't take pleasure in bringing harm to others.

But Daphne hadn't seemed to return yet, and Dorothy figured that she'd run into her sister almost the instant Daphne returned. For the meantime, she had other duties to attend to. The first was to continue checking in with everyone on the ship, making sure that they were packing appropriately and not taking anything that could be identified. Fortunately, the crew's quarters wasn't too far, and Dorothy rapped on about each door in turn, hoping to get the attention of any members there.

"Reminder that you'll need to leave behind anything Alliance brand," Dorothy explained, her voice a bit sterner that it normally was. She was consciously trying to be a bit tougher, to slip into the strictness that she kept her medical bay with, especially under surgery conditions. She tried to imagine she was dealing with Genevieve barging in while she was in the middle of paperwork. A firm tone, yet not unreasonably so. "Anything that can be tracked or identified, leave behind. I'll be coming around an' checking soon enough."

Figuring that anyone still in their quarters must have heard her, Dorothy then quickly tried to picture where anyone else might have been off to, if not in their quarters packing. The so called Foy-er seemed to be a social place, and she figured it was good as anywhere to check. Making her way down to the lower level, she kept an eye out for Daphne, just in case her sister had already returned. Whatever punishment Dorothy eventually decided on, she knew it wasn't going to be shiny for Daphne.

Approaching the Foy-er, Dorothy waited just outside, knocking to announce her presence.

Mei Qiáo

Location: Newhope - Town

The girl seemed to be just wandering around. Mei made a mental note that this woman, whether Alliance or not, didn't seem to be in any hurry. Strange for someone from an Alliance ship to not be doing something noteworthy. Though there was always a chance she was on leave or had a few spare minutes. Still though, wandering around the market and the streets didn't seem like something an Alliance person would do. Granted, her interactions with the Alliance were often one-sided (and usually ended with someone getting hurt. Preferably them).

The woman seemed to be thinking about something. As quickly as she came into town, she turned back and started making her way to the docks. Was she going back to the ship? What did she accomplish? She did almost nothing of interest! "How boring a life she must lead," she thought to herself. She may not be the best judge in entertainment, but her life was certainly not boring. Still, she followed. Now intrigued as to what this woman could be doing. More importantly, she wanted to see the ship for herself. The inside of it, in reality. Could she sneak aboard? Probably. Would that end in chaos? Most likely. She couldn't shake this feeling that this woman she was following was a key to her goals.

Daphne Pender

Location: Town

She enjoyed her surroundings, the people, and the open space compared to the cramped ship. However, it was high time she head back to the ship, and see if there was anything she could do to help out with moving things to their new ship, whenever they actually got it. Daphne was curious as to what type of ship they were getting, knowing that it probably was not going to be another Alliance vessel, which made her glad. She knew a little bit about their ships, but not enough to make herself comfortable behind the helm of one.

She started making her way back through the crowd, heading back towards the docks. Daphne wondered if they had noticed her missing by now. The ship was big, so there was a chance that they hadn't, but knowing Anisa those odds were pretty slim. She decided to take her time getting back, if anyone had noticed that she was gone, she was already in trouble, so it didn't really matter how quickly she got back to the ship. The idea of heading back to the ship so soon was annoying, but she really should be helping out, even though she always felt like she was getting in the way of everyone else who clearly had more important things to do or whatever.
