The more we talk about this, the more confusing it gets. I seem to recall being told that people are generally unaware of magic, so I assumed that persecution was something that happened in the few cases someone discovered a mage.

I just wanted a simple RP without involving the complexities of science, religion, society and whatnot. It was inspired by shonen manga, but I guess that's what I get for not establishing the specifics of the setting I gave you guys.

This is getting quite discouraging.

To be honest, I feel like the biggest issue is that 10-15% figure in the OP.

I mean, that's literally over a billion people worldwide that can do magic. There are an equivalent or greater number magicians than there are African Americans in the US in this setting, assuming equal distribution across the world. That's a lot of people.

I mean, if all of them can do their own magic with no issues it just seems pretty weird to me that they'd be considered rare or strange at all. With those kinds of numbers, you'd have to be living under a rock not to know a guy who can shoot lasers from his eyes.

And I mean if there's that many and they have no issues exploding you at will and probably know some other guys who also have no issues exploding you at will then why would you go out of your way to harass those people?

It's just hard to wrap my head around, is all.

We can still do that, no reason to get discouraged. The actual school itself can still be that more or less no problem. But, you know, it was you who brought up science when trying to explain why magic interferes with technology. And it was also part of the setting that society at the very least heavily shuns those who show magic potential, to the point where character backstories hinge around this.

I wouldn't argue if I wasn't going to play, tbh, but I do enjoy talking about settings and worldbuilding. It's not really a mistake, just something I feel is convoluted and could be done better and explained in a simpler manner that would be more internally consistent and keep the given world ideas just as relevant as they currently are, if not moreso as they'd apply more strongly.
