How to be a Hero in a Brave New World

Thirty years ago, a luminescent baby came into the world in the city of Quig Quig, China. As time went on, more and more of the world's youth were born with strange abilities and powers, soon coming to be known as Quirks. Initially feared, tensions were high before the rise of the Hero community. After an extraordinary earthquake struck Los Angeles, one man rose up to help: Marcus Smith. Born with a quirk that made him look well and truly terrifying, the optimistic young man saved countless lives, returning to the rubble again and again as he dug through the remains of the city for every last survivor. As he worked, others with special abilities joined him, helping in any way they could to save lives. They were Heroes. This event sparked the Hero trend, as young people around the nation and soon the globe used their Quirks to help people wherever and whenever they could, making the world a better place.

Today, the Hero community is one of the main pillars of society in the United States, though the trend is actively spreading around the world. Treated as stars, the best heroes are held in renown as shining examples of good in a world full of trouble, receiving ample publicity and generous government pensions. Realizing that the world could always use more Heroes, Marcus and a few similar friends set out to found the Apprentice program, where young people with promising powers could come to learn how to be a Hero with hands-on experience and a few friendly mentors to help them on their way. This is where you come in.

You are one of those few, talented youths. Over the course of the next two years, you will be embarking on a journey of self-discovery and hard work, figuring out the best ways to utilize your Quirks and make the world a better place. Today you take your first step towards finding yourself, your future, and the promise of one day becoming a true Hero.

QUARTERS

QUARTERS:

Everyone will live in the same location, a base of operations in New York City with the heroes each using their own modes of transportation to move their charges to where they're needed and stay protected from Villains at the same time. (More or less, it gives everyone an excuse to have some free time to train, interact with characters not on their own team, develop their characters, etc. in the same location as everyone else. Yes, you will have one roommate. Yes, there will be shenanigans on base. I would be personally disappointed if pranks didn't happen, but keep in mind that the Mentors are always watching, and the scores always change...)

TEAMS

TEAMS:

As things stand right now, there are 18 chars. The apprentices will be split into teams of 3-4(ish), with each mentor leading two teams. Teams will be encouraged to compete, though there will be times when multiple teams will need to work together in order to solve larger problems.

QUIRKS

QUIRKS:

I would like everyone to try and go for about the same power level as the AVERAGE student at UA. No Todorokis or Dekus, as those children are just broken as all hell. That being said, Quirks will develop and grow with practice and hard work. There will be a gradual power increase as the RP goes on and your students develop their skills. I WOULD like if you would PM me for how your quirk will grow, just so we can discuss things and figure out exactly the direction you want to go. Get creative! Remember that Quirks are technically bodily functions, not magic. I'm hoping for a bit more of an organic feel than "it works because it does." The best quirks can do fun things in unexpected ways, and I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with. I will say, if you could PM me about what you want your quirk to do just so we can discuss things before you post a cs, that would be great. I know it's a bit of a pain, but the idea is to make things more fun for everyone. Thanks!

RULES

RULES:

1) No godmodding, metagaming, etc. You guys know not to be jerks.
2) If you have a problem with someone, don't bring it to the OC chat. IC conflicts are fine so long as they are SOLELY in character conflicts, but if you have issues with someone, bring it to the PMs. I don't want to see it, the group doesn't want to see it, keep it away.
3) SPOILERS: We're going to try to avoid the actual Boku no Hero timeline in order to avoid spoilers for those of us reading the manga and watching the anime, and also to free up some wiggle room for creativity. This also means avoiding spoilers in the OC chat. If you absolutely, positively, must mention something, put it in a hider labeling it as spoilers.
4) On posts, try for a decent length. I don't expect six and a half pages of archaic prose, but avoid one-liners and try to make sure that your post represents progress and doesn't strangle the story as it's being written. Don't kneecap your fellow RPers.
5) For any other issues, feel free to bring it up in the OC chat or PM myself or one of the CoGMs if you wouldn't like everyone to see it. We'll be tactful and do our best to address any problems that come up.
6) If you're going to be gone for a while(like a week or so) please, PLEASE tell me or the CoGMs. We'll be understanding about it, we just need to know what's going on for the sake of keeping the plot moving. Thanks.
7) Have fun, guys! This is supposed to be an upbeat kinda thing, so don't take things too seriously and enjoy the ride.

At the end of the day, this is supposed to be a fun, upbeat RP with overall enthusiasm and positive themes. That's not to say there won't be darker moments and themes explored, but the focus is going to be an optimistic vibe as your chars learn to become the heroes they're meant to be. Something to keep in mind.

RANKINGS

RANKINGS:

Each mentor will have two teams under them as things stand right now, with a total of six trainees learning beneath each hero. Every team will be ranked with standing 1-6, with the higher ranking teams gaining benefits such as more free time on the town, trust to handle more dangerous missions, and a payroll as they are rewarded for their efforts. Training rooms/time will be equally shared among teams so that all trainees have a chance to increase their rank. Team rankings will be determined by the combined individual scores of their component trainees. Scores will be decided based off of heroism, combat capability, and rescue operations; the three main duties of pro Heroes.

Talents and Skills: Do you box? Swim? Bake? Braid hair? Are you a grease monkey? Tell us what makes you tick, what you know how to do, what you do with your spare time. Obviously, no one's a grand master martial artist or the best swordsman in all the land; you're all still studying. But you can be pretty good.

OLD STUDENTS: (This section only applies to those of you from Rob's old RP, everyone else can skip it.) If you guys want to keep your old Character Sheets, that's fine and dandy. I've read them all over, no one's broken, and it would provide a good basis for what people coming in are looking for in a good CS. That being said, if you can alter your backstories just a little bit so it makes sense that you're in America, that would be great. Thanks!

Those of you who have had character sheets already approved, please feel free to post those in the CS tab. For the rest of you, go ahead and write that money up and drop it in the OC for review and the CoGMs and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I’ll try to finish writing up the IC soon, at the BARE MINIMUM it will be up by Wednesday. I would like to put it up sooner, but do have work and exams and life going on, so no guarantees.

REMINDER

Quirks only came into existence thirty years ago, so the vast majority of your characters are the first people in their families with Quirks. Only 30% of the world's population has a Quirk so far, and of those roughly 35% have a Quirk that could be considered useful for professional Hero Quirk. In all likelihood, your Quirk is not a fusion of your parents' Quirks, as they would both have to be roughly 15-17 when they had you. That is an option you can pursue, but it is also something to remember. Thanks.

Noel is distinctly characterized by his incessant snide remarks and snarky demeanor. He has a jolly and mocking personality which simultaneously allows him to act remarkably comfortable around others—as if the people he interacts with are old friends—and keep them at a distance with his insulting and irritating wit. At first glance, Noel doesn't seem to take much of anything seriously as he constantly makes light of situations no matter how dire they may be. And he doesn't seem to put much effort into most things either, regarding a lot of things as a waste of time and often giving half-baked excuses as to why he regards them as such.

Underlying his off-putting exterior is an incredible intellect. He has a knack for reading others and accurately predicting their actions and thoughts. He's not the world's greatest detective or anything of the sort but he is significantly above the average person. Noel perceives it almost as a second Quirk and utilizes it in battle as much as his actual Quirk which, in and of itself, isn't the typical combat-direct Quirk.

Noel detests popular Heroes, those who have gain the adoration of the many. While he defers to multiple reasons for his intense dislike of popular Heroes, the real truth is that he is envious of them and feels inferior to those Heroes. He knows full well that he can never become the type of Hero that the masses adore and that reality he holds has caused him to become cynical to the idea of the popular Hero.

Noel doesn't have many friends, as expected, but the ones he does have and/or make have earned his unique brand of respect to be considered so, typically by impressing him with their ideals or interesting uses of their Quirks. Despite his behavior seeming contrary to the ideal model of a Hero, Noel does hold steadfast to the idea of becoming a Hero one day and strictly follows most of the unspoken Hero code. Driving this dream of his is Noel's love for his little brother who had always seen him as the Hero he is meant to be even if Noel doesn't personally believe it himself.

Background
A child is born with white hair to a pair of Quirkless parents. Unusual, but in a world inhabited by Heroes and Villains, it's a mild development at best. They were just happy to know that the child was born healthy. They named the child, Noel, in honor to the day he was born on. He was their present. A seemingly harmless boy with no special attributes other than his strange white hair, it certainly came as quite a shock when the boy's parents discovered that he indeed possessed a Quirk. One day, when the boy was playing in the garden while his mother tended to her flowers, Noel found that he can submerged himself underneath the ground and the dirt behave in a way similar to water. When his mother turned around to check on him, Noel was nowhere to be seen.

Her worries were quelled when she heard Noel's voice emanating from behind her. She found him sitting in the middle of the large planter containing the flowers she had been tending to. But how he managed such a feat puzzled her. So he did it again; right in front of her eyes. This boy has a Quirk. Growing up, Noel felt detached from the rest of society. His Quirk wasn't anything cool like super strength or shooting fireballs. He was jealous of those children with flashy Quirks that get noticed by everyone. "Those are the kids that grow up to be Heroes," he thought to himself on so many occasions.

Despite it all, Noel always had one fan that truly believed he is a Hero like the rest of them: his little brother, Noah. A Quirkless lad, Noah looked up to his big brother and his special power. Noah had seen and experience firsthand his brother's capacity for kindness and his willingness to do good. No matter what anybody says and even in spite of Noel's own belief, Noah considers him a Hero through and through. And Noel loved his little brother. Not wanting to be seen as a failure to him, Noel worked hard to one day become the Hero his brother sees him as. And then...

Fast forward to today, Noel is a young man of sixteen who still strives to be a Hero but in his own unique way. At some point, he was discovered by the Heroes of the Apprentice program who saw something in him and invited him to be part of the program. Noel, while on the surface, reluctantly agreed, was very excited deep down to be part of such a venture. Leaving his hometown of Chicago, Noel moved to New York to start living at the base of operations for the Apprentice program where he'll see what his future holds for him. His aim: to become the Hero his number one fan sees him as.

Quirk
Mole: This Quirk allows Noel to "swim" through most types of surfaces as if they're water. Surfaces like rock, concrete, cement, asphalt, wood, etc. but not anything as dense or denser than metals. The true secret behind this Quirk is actually the freely controlled production of a powerful acid-like substance from Noel's pores that instantaneously eats through the molecules of mineral-like materials, allowing the user to "swim" through those materials. At the same time, the acid-like substance quickly hardens, leaving behind a bi-product similar in composition to the original material and, in essence, replacing what was corroded in the first place. At this stage, the acid is not powerful enough to corrode anything as dense as metals hence Noel's inability to "swim" through metals or denser substance. Also, the acid does not affect biological material aside from vegetation. With his physical training, Noel is able to "swim" as fast as an average person's full-on sprint and can hold his breath while submerged for up to two minutes at any given time.

Talents and Skills
• Noel is an athletic swimmer. Not only does he enjoy the sport but it also helps him immensely with the usage of his Quirk.
• Not having super strength or pyromancy or anything of the sort, Noel relies on physical strength training and combat training to help him fight the bad guys.
• Due to his Quirk, Noel is forced to hone his senses other than sight.
• Noel enjoys puzzles, mind games, and tactical games like chess although he has developed a twisted, chaotic version of chess that employs the use of chess pieces, checker pieces, and even small action figures of Heroes. He plays it exclusively with himself where he's always the winner.

Personality
Elpoy does not actually aim to become a professional hero. He simply wants to help his family escape poverty. Elpoy may seem laid-back at first glance, but he is surprisingly very hardworking. Aside from that, he is quick witted and hardy. He does not complain no matter what, and he even turns down help that is offered to him. He also feels uneasy when surrounded by pretty women.

Elpoy's defining feature is that he likes to speak "Ingrish" in his weird Filipino accent. He does fully understand the language, but his accent just...hampers it.

The Story

Elpoy Diaz was born in some unidentified slum in the Filipino city of Manila. His father, Armando Diaz,
was a construction worker who lived on pan de sal and instant coffee. His mother, Victorina Diaz, was a housewife who looked after the house while his father would do his work. He lived a humble life, and he studied his way into high school.

Elpoy discovered his quirk at a young age. His father helped Elpoy develop his talent. Soon, Elpoy would help his father in construction work. He never thought of being a hero, since he did not want all the publicity that the actors and politicians would get. He wanted to become an engineer at first, so that he could design buildings and landmarks.

Elpoy's father soon found work in the the USA. He worked at a grocery store, and earned significantly more from his new job. Elpoy was pressured to get used to speaking the English language, but he got used to it. Elpoy lived a quiet life until one fateful day.

One day, Elpoy was bullied by a gang of teenage deliquents for having such a ridiculous accent. He got into a street fight, and he defeated the entire gang of unwary teenagers by storm. Some guy who worked for the academy noticed Elpoy's great talent. He introduced himself as Antonino De Jesus, a janitor at the facility. He referred Elpoy to a prestigious hero program located in New York City. Elpoy's parents were excited, since they were at the verge of escaping poverty. Elpoy was reluctantly sent to the academy at his parents' request.

Sure, he did not want all the publicity, but he swore that he would get his family out of poverty. From there, his journey started.

Quirk: "Structural Manipulation"
My own take on Edward Elric's ability. Ever heard of Fullmetal Alchemist?

When Elpoy comes into contact with a solid object, he may manipulate its structure. For example, he can cause a solid wall of concrete to grow spikes or shapeshift into the guise of a giraffe with much focus.

Elpoy does this simply by emitting some sort of vibrant energy in the solid object. When he is in contact with the object, he can run the energy through it, and transfer it to other solid objects that are attached or simply placed near the primary object. When the energy reaches a certain point or location in the object, Elpoy will be able to manipulate it at will.

A major drawback to his quirk is that solid objects are bound by the Law of Conservation of Mass, and Elpoy can not create things out of thin air. The quirk does not have limits, but Elpoy himself does. He can project walls out of the floor of a basketball court, but he cannot terraform the entire building without using an inhuman amount of effort. Still, Elpoy's quirk leaves lots of room for improvisation, and he can use it in many ways whether he is in combat or not.

Talents and Skills

• Elpoy possesses high spatial intelligence. This helps him handle his ability with ease. It also gives him a good sense of direction.
• When Elpoy is faced with close-quarters combat, he resorts to an improvised version of Arnis.
• Elpoy has been hardened by poverty. He is spendthrifty, and he can endure hunger and exposure to the elements.
• Elpoy is talented at MOBA and FPS games.

Disclaimer: Filipinos are actually good at speaking English. Elpoy's weird accent is present merely for comedic purposes.

Personality:

Flint O'Brien's as stubborn as a mule and has a fiery temper that few can match. He has a strong distrust for authority, believing that he's better off making his own decisions than listening to anyone else. O'Brien is fiercely independent, more often than not choosing to approach a problem on his own than seek out help from others. He tends to rush into things without thinking them through. Flint's more likely to spend an hour ramming his head against a wall than to go to someone else, even if they're more capable, for help. Asking for assistance is a sign of weakness; and growing up how he did, Flint learned how to hide his weaknesses well behind an aggressive, unapproachable mask. He suffers from a poor ability to socialize due to this behavior. He has difficulty explaining his thoughts to others, especially if they have to do with his feelings. He'd much prefer to bottle up his emotions and let them fester than talk things out. Despite Flint's relatively powerful quirk, his many other shortcomings have made following his dream of becoming a hero...hard, to say the least. He's jumped between multiple schools, few being willing to deal with his rebellious nature. Yet, despite his many flaws, Flint has a passion that burns like the flames he commands. There is nothing in this life he wants more than to be a hero. His overwhelming desire to help people cannot be overlooked. He has never let anything stop him from achieving his dreams.

Background:

Flint O'Brien was born to Maria O'Brien in a run down Harlem clinic. His father had run out on Maria the day she told him she was pregnant, leaving the young woman to raise Flint all on her own. During Flint's first few years, Maria had difficulty keeping up with two jobs and finding time to take care of her son. Raised staunchly Catholic by her own parents, Maria relied on a local priest to help watch her child while she worked- she couldn't afford an actual daycare or babysitter. Father Adams did his best with the toddler, though the boy turned out to be quite the handful. The young mother, exhausted from work and inexperienced in child bearing, leaned heavily on the older religious leader's guidance. He himself wasn't great with children; Adams routinely found himself bending to the little devil's whims. Neither he nor Maria ever properly disciplined him.

Flint's powers manifested on his fourth birthday when he used the candles to set fire to the cake...and the table it was on. The Father's first assumption was that the child was possessed. Adams tried to cast out the demon, only for the young boy to freak out and use his powers to nearly set fire to the church using the candelabrum. Flint was then locked in a room for several days, only given food and water through a small window. The terrified four year old's pleas for an explanation fell on deaf ears. After much research and prayer,
the priest came to the conclusion that Flint had one of the 'Quirks' that had been talked about so much on the news. The boy was finally taken back home by his mother, but the damage had been done: Maria was terrified of her own child, and Flint hated her for letting Adams lock her away. He refused to ever go back to the church. His mom chose to leave him home alone.

Once he was old enough, Maria started to send Flint to school. He hated it. People kept telling him what to do. He fought against his teachers all the way till second grade, his defiance escalating to outright violence on a number of occasions. Flint was then forced to transfer to a 'special' school for more difficult children. As he grew older, Flint continued to defy authority. He got into altercations with other students practically every day. It was a miracle he avoided expulsion for so long.

Maria transferred him to another school after he finished elementary, hoping a new environment might promote better behavior. She was wrong. Flint continued to fight and rebel. He was barely passing all of his classes and went out of his way to screw with the other students. If he didn't come up with a split lip or red knuckles, his mother counted it as a good day. Things continued to escalate until another student arrived at the school. A transfer, and the only student at the school other than Flint with a quirk. It was only a matter of time before word reached O'Brien of the boy's special ability. His 'friends' dared Flint to fight him; and of course he took them up on their challenge. Flint caught the other student in the hall and attacked him. The new boy's super strength shattered Flint's ribs, and the pyro's fire covered his opponent in first degree burns.

That was the final straw. The police were brought in and ended up dragging O'Brien away in handcuffs. He was threatened with charges of assault and arson. Flint may have been taken to court, too, if it wasn't for the intervention of a stranger. One of New York's more famous heroes heard about the incident and came right away. In exchange for the charges being dropped, the boy would have to serve a year's worth of 'community service' and would be put on probation. After talking it over with Maria, Flint agreed. The hero took Flint in to the apprentice program. He explained what it was they did there. To a young, impressionable mind like O'Brien, this man changed his whole prospective. Flint hated his lot in life. He hated everything about how his mother had raised him. People had treated him like a freak for having a quirk, and, in his mind, he'd been striking back at them for their persecution. This hero offered him another way. Instead of destroying the system, Flint should strive to fix it- to make sure no one else had to suffer or fight like he had because they were born different. O'Brien channeled his energy into this new goal, throwing all of himself into becoming a hero.

Quirk:

Fire Manipulation-

Flint is capable of controlling fire with his mind. Any existing flame is his to command. He is able to shape an inferno to his will, wielding it as a weapon or choking it out as he sees fit. O'Brien can quench or control a blaze roughly the size of a house fire, though doing so takes some concentration and effort on his part. He can't create fire from thin air; Flint is only able to control existing flames. Manipulating a blaze takes some measure of energy and focus, the intensity of which is dependent on the size and ferocity of said inferno. Unlike some pyros, O'Brien is in no way immune to his quirk's power. He can be burned just like anyone else. To counteract some of the limits of his abilities, Flint tends to keep multiple lighters on his person- just in case he needs to get fired up; they don't offer a great volume of fire to work with, but it's something. To the same effect, Flint's been on the look out for fireproof clothing, though he's yet to find anything after rummaging through the stocks of numerous thrift stores.

Talents and Skills:

• While he has no formal combat training, Flint's aggressive and stubborn personality have gotten him into plenty of scuffles. He can take a hit, and he knows how to dish it out.
• Due to his mother working two full time jobs and never having time to take care of him, Flint had to learn how to feed himself. He isn't a half bad chef. O'Brien's especially good at making a decent meal with very few ingredients to work with.
• Flint's family never had the money to pay for a trip to the hospital. If he got hurt (and thanks to all the constant fights, that happened often) he had to patch himself up. He learned how to keep a steady hand when using a needle, and the best way to make a splint.

@Tominas That is so strange. I took Ryoma's CS from the interest thread for this. It should have had his updated history in it, yet it was his old one. Everything is fixed now. I added in the fact that Ryoma's sister, Makoto, was one of the first to be discovered with a Quirk. She's 27. If you want to use her as an NPC, go ahead, I have a Quirk in mind for her and everything.
