Long ago, the worlds were once together as one in what is now known as the Age of Fairy Tales. In this period, Wielders of the Keyblade used their titular weapons to safeguard the Light that protected the world. Five wielders known as the Foretellers, each one a student of the first Keyblade Master known only as the Master of Masters, started their own organizations called Unions in accordance with the Master's wishes. In time the Unions grew, and as they did so did tension between the five Foretellers. Before he mysteriously vanished, the Master of Masters mysteriously warned of a looming disaster, and a traitor among the Foretellers. This created dissent and distrust until eventually, the five unions clashed in what was later called the Keyblade War. The conflict was so destructive, so disastrous that the World was shattered and its remains scattered across the Lanes Between until they each formed new worlds. The old Keyblade Order was gone, but a new one began to blossom in its place. Situated in the Land of Departure, it is here that young Keyblade Wielders are taught the precepts and trained to strike down any who would upset the delicate balance of Light and Darkness. It is also here, at the world's center, that a powerful relic of the Age of Fairy Tales is buried. A Keyblade, known only as the X-Blade. It is said that this weapon was what the Unions originally fought over. The blade itself is broken, much like the original world, shattered into twenty pieces: 7 of Light and 13 of Darkness. It is in the Land of Departure that two Keyblade Masters each train their pupils in the way of the Keyblade. But when the pieces of the X-Blade mysteriously vanish, the two Masters are unable to agree on how best to diffuse the situation. One of the Masters departs alongside his pupils and they decide to brave the dangers of the Darkness to recover the X-Blade. Meanwhile, the remaining Master tasks his pupils with tracking down the missing Master and pupils and to do everything in their power to prevent another Keyblade War from erupting.

Land of Departure ~ Past Midnight

It was a dark night, even the starry sky seemed to do little to shed light on the gloomy atmosphere. The Castle was situated on a high plateau overlooking sheer cliffs, with the only pathways being canyon paths and wooden bridges. Pillars were situated at various corners, connected by heavy looking gilded chains. Markings of the Keyblade Order adorned the paved walkways that led up a staircase to the castle itself. Normally warm and inviting, the castle almost seemed foreboding on this night instead. Figures quietly walked up the steps and to a side door leading into a little-known sub-level. One figure was clearly leading the others, as she used her appropriately Moon-shaped Keyblade to open the lock door and allow herself and her followers to enter.

Inside was almost labyrinthian, hallways that seemed to wind in endless circles. To the untrained eye, it appeared chaotic in its design, but this was very much deliberate. This passage was - by design - intended to deter intruders from retrieving the relics normally found at the center. Thankfully, the lead figure apparently new exactly which way she was going, else the group was likely to end up lost and wandering for hours. At the end of the winding labyrinth of corridors was a room, this one locked like the entrance door. It was a special lock that only one of two Keyblades were capable of opening. But like with the outside entrance, the lead figure's Keyblade happened to be one of the two blades able to open the lock. In the room was a set of pedestals. Twenty of them to be exact, situated in a circular pattern. In the center was a thick pillar adorned with many star-shaped trinkets of varying colors. The pedestals, seven of them of at least, housed shards of Light that floated above them. Each one radiating with raw power, and pure Light devoid of even the smallest hint of Darkness. The other thirteen pedestals, unfortunately, were empty. Their contents removed and their current whereabouts unknown. They were in fact the reason this group was gathered here.

The leading figure approached the center pillar and took a trinket off of it and held it for her followers to see, "Wayfinders," said Master Viper in a quick and matter-of-fact tone. She didn't want to idle for too long in this room, "Wielders of the Old Order were said to use them to stay in contact. Unbreakable connections can be created between the holders of these items. But these Wayfinders are special, they bear a secondary function. They are connected, not just with each other, but with each of the twenty pieces of the Relic. They'll prove useful to us as a means of tracking down the stolen Pieces. Come, each of you take one. You'll need them."

When everyone had a Wayfinder, Master Viper led them back out to the Outer Courtyard, "I ask a lot of you, my pupils. I know that. The precepts strictly forbids it. But the missing pieces are too important to leave alone. Whatever consequences are begotten by my actions, I am prepared to face them. But if any of you are not, then you are free to remain here and continue your training under Master Cormack's wise tutelage. And I will not hold that choice against you. But if you are willing, then come with me, and we will brave the coming storm together. May our Hearts be our guiding key."

After this, Viper summoned her Keyblade and used it to open the Lanes Between. Then she used a silvery button at her waist to don her Armor. It was something all Keyblade Wielders were given, a means to protect them from the Darkness that filled the Lanes Between and allowed them to safely travel from one world to another.

Land of Departure ~ The Next Morning

@Katakon@AngelofOctober

"This is most troubling." Master Cormack stood in the throne room. Behind him were three thrones. They were meant for the highest ranking Masters to sit together and convene. However, Cormack was the only Master now present. The other Master usually occupying the opposite throne was gone. And all but one of her Pupils had gone with her. In fact Master Cormack had only learned of this departure thanks to said student coming forward and informing him, "But, I am glad you chose to do the right thing, Raine. You may have given us the advantage we need to stop something terrible from happening." he said, then glanced over each of his own Pupils, who had also gathered.

"Today was to be a momentous day. One our own was to be examined for the Mark of Mastery. And yet..." his gaze had paused on Celestia before he offered a heavy, apologetic sigh, "...I'm afraid the Exam will have to be postponed. This potential crisis must take priority. Celestia... I am truly sorry." but then he returned to shifting his gaze between all the pupils, "I'd like for you three to come with me. There are preparations we must make before any actions can be taken." he then began to leave through the exit that would take him out to the courtyard. Master Cormack led his pupils to a hidden door that led into an underground passage.

"This passage leads to where the Relic was buried," he explained, summoning his Sun-shaped Keyblade and using it to open the door, "It can only be opened by either mine or Master Viper's Keyblade. Inside you'll find the hallways to be winding and rather confusing. This is also a defense mechanism, designed to deter would-be thieves and intruders." as the group found itself in the Labyrinthian passage. Cormack's words rang true about the nature of its design. But the pupils had nothing to fear, as Cormack was one of the few who knew the exact path that led to the end of the passage. Once there he once again used his Keyblade to open a door similarly locked like the one outside.

"Behold, the Relic... or at least what is left of it." when the door opened, the Pupils got their own look into the chamber. The pedestals, the pillar, all still in place. The only things missing were the thirteen stolen Pieces, and now four of the trinkets had been removed from the pillar, "Just as I suspected. These devices are Wayfinders. You may have read about these in some of the old books and scrolls. The connections formed between them are unbreakable and said to be able to transcend even the Realms of Light and Darkness. These Wayfinders bear also a connection to the twenty pieces of the X-Blade. The missing Wayfinders are no doubt in the possession of Master Viper and her students. But that will also be their undoing, for you three need only each take a Wayfinder of your own and you will have the means to search for them across any World they may pass through."

Master Cormack waited for each of the Apprentices to take a Wayfinder. Once they did, he would lead them through the passage and back out into the Outer Courtyard, "Master Viper has unlocked the Lanes Between. These forbidden passageways will allow the Keyblade's Chosen to traverse between worlds. But beware, the Lanes Between hold immeasurable dangers from the forces of Darkness. However, your Armor will protect you. Remember also that Order must be kept. You must not reveal the existence of the Keyblade or other worlds to those you may encounter." he closed his eyes, offering one last heavy sigh.

"I know that this news is a shock to you but my words are indeed true. Master Viper has left us, and her pupils with her. They no doubt wish recover the missing pieces of the relic. But what cost are they willing to pay? Would they allow the Darkness to take them? It is not a price I am willing to pay, not even for the X-Blade. I'm afraid I must task you with seeking out those who left and to bring them back before it is too late. It is a dangerous task, you will have to brave many dangers when traveling the worlds, but I am confident that you will succeed. Remember the precepts, and may your Hearts be your guiding key."

Abel had done as he always had done gone with his instinct. His newest teacher, probably won't be his last he had always bounced from master to master it had seemed, had brought him along to prepare for a journey. Better than sitting around learning the precepts of this dumb destiny they were all bound to by these darn keyblades, once of which had chosen him. Abel wasn't a complicated man if something needed to be done he'd do it there was no need for romance, or subtly you go on, and you take what you needed to within reason. This new adventure was bound to be no different than the others he had found himself on over the years. As he walked up to the pedestal he grabbed his own wayfinder and felt the power emanating in it. It felt wrong to grasp something so strong that wasn't of his own will but if it was necessary...fine he'll burden this object guiding him. Hopefully it all led into something more important down the line. As he followed his fellow students with Viper towards their next area he smiled, and gave a hardy chuckle. "Master its ME we're talking about here y'know? We don't gotta establish much with me. I'll do whatever it takes to win the day. Consequences, pain, and hardship aren't new to me. I've dealt with that my whole life. Gotta do what you gotta do to survive. The darkness don't bother me at all. Only a problem if you ain't got what it takes to sustain yourself. No grip on reality, and your position in it. I'm not about to be seduced by false promises, and fakers. Lead the way I'll shatter that darkness like a glass window then we can come back be big god damn heroes, or somethin' and go help the next hapless dreamer. Gotta represent the good fight. Lead I'll follow you until you stop makin' sense." Abel said as he activated his own armor waiting for the next step of their adventure he wasn't sure about his choice in companions though these two seemed like they got a few screws loose. Students of Viper, or not that didn't excuse 'em.

Farce strolled behind his master with ease. His arm folded behind his head, his steps calculated to a leisurely rhythm. The whole dungeon-labyrinth thing was a nice setup, especially considering how truly dizzying it was. He could make a left turn, make a note of it, look behind himself, and honestly not tell if it was left or right. Maybe it was the material the halls were made of or the flawless order of its pattern but it felt like a blur.

Coming into the last locked room was like entering a shrine. Actual evidence of the guarded secrets of the Masters. His arms fell from his head and hung at his sides, he awed with excitement.

Master Viper mentioned the star-shaped amulets as Wayfinders and motioned for them to take their own.

With a orange and blue one in hand, Master Viper led them back out. She gave them a way out, almost foolishly in his opinion. Honestly none of it mattered. Viper had been his Master since arriving, he wasn't about to bail on her. Not when she needed companions and trusted comrades the most. He had owed her most of what he had: his skills, his convictions, and his resolutions.

Abel went on a long talk, one that had Farce scratching his head and tapping his sabon against the ground until he was done. Afterwards, he simply chuckled. "I'm not going anywhere either, Mama Viper. I'm here till the very end. Isn't this what we've been training for? fighting the darkness and all that," he told her with a smile, initiating his own black-dyed armor to protect him from the Lanes. @vancexentan@Double

He yawns for a second. What’s with the speech Viper is giving? He only decided to come because it sounded like fun. But she was making it out to sound boring as well. He didn’t really care either way if he were with Cormack or if he were with Viper this wasn’t about loyalty for him. Though it be nice to gauge how much power he had gained over the years with practical experience, it seemed Cormack and Viper shared half of the same stick up their ass that made them stuffy and uninteresting.

“Right, we wouldn’t be standing out here if we didn’t know the great risk,” X mocks while also wiggling his fingers in a magical way, “Ooo.”

He accepts the Wayfinder quietly before activating his own armor as well. Better safe than having your body on the other side of a great distance. Taking out a graphic novel he was reading, he silently follows the rest of the group.

Ianthe

This isn’t good. She stared at the turquoise tea cups. Poor Master Cormack must been heartbroken from Master Viper’s leave. She was always told tea was a way to cheer someone up. She smile proudly at the lavender brew. Now all she had to do was serve it, without dropping it. Picking up the serving tray she happily headed down the hall with a bounce to her step, but careful to not spill the tea. She didn’t think anyone would choose to go between the Lanes and find the Relics in an unsafe way as the others had chosen.

She hoped and wished them the best of luck and that they would come home soon. Heading into the throne room with a bright smile.

“Master Cormack!” she calls out, “I made tea.”

So far so good. Her feet were still on the ground, “You know what they say about a piping cup of tea. Warms the….”

The floor is a lot slippery than she thought it be, as she finds herself sailing down to the ground. The sound of shattering tea cups.

“Oh no!” Ianthe says disappointedly.

She had put a great amount of effort into brewing those.

"Hm, well let's hope you can keep that confidence then." Viper said in response to her pupils. Their response wasn't at all surprising to her. She knew them all well enough to have predicted such a reply. Still, it was nice to hear it regardless. While in the Lanes Between, the armored forms of Viper and her three pupils appeared to glide through the void. It was the Keyblades' power that allowed their respective wielders to safely traverse the Lanes. Viper held up her own Wayfinder and, after a moment of staring at it, used her Keyblade to make a new opening. This opening led to another world, the first of many in what could very well become a treacherous journey.

Traverse Town was a somewhat unique world. It was a world where a few of its inhabitants were actually refugees from other worlds that had been lost. But it was still unknown how those sort of survivors found themselves here. Still, that meant that Traverse Town was a surprisingly common stop in any Keyblade Wielder's travels. And it seemed that now was no different.

In an alleyway tucked away in First District, away from prying eyes, an opening appeared seemingly from nowhere. An armored figure stepped through it followed by three others. As soon as they were through, the opening closed back up and their armor seemed to dissolve into particles of light that vanished before they even fell to the pavement. This arrival spot was very much deliberate, that much was clear to the three pupils. That would also hint at Viper having prior knowledge of this particular world. As well she should, for this was not her first time visiting it.

"As I suspected." Viper said, holding up her Wayfinder for the pupils to see. It suddenly had a faint glow that was not there before that moment, "See how it glows? The glow will increase in brightness as the Wayfinder is brought closer to the X-Blade, or at least to any of its twenty pieces. Go ahead and look at yours, they too should be glowing." and in fact she was right. Should any of them check their own Wayfinder, they would find them also glowing in a similar manner, "The truth is, I came to this world already when the pieces were first reported stolen. I thought I might be able to investigate but that proved fruitless without a Wayfinder. Still, I had a hunch there was something dark about this world, and it seems I was not wrong." she looked at the glowing Wayfinder and sighed a bit.

"Alright, I'm going to investigate my hunch. I'd like you three to investigate around the First and Second Districts for now. Ask around and see if anyone has seen or heard anything strange lately. If there's trouble, don't be afraid to use your Wayfinder to call for help, the last thing any of us needs is to be overwhelmed." with that, she pocketed her Wayfinder and began to walk away until she disappeared into the Third District. That would leave X, Abel, Farce to investigate in however way they deemed best.

"Oh, Ianthe..." said Celestia with a sigh. While one might normally react with annoyance, Celestia just helped the girl back to her feet with a smile, "Well, it's the thought that counts, anyway." the way she sounded, one would never guess that she had just been told her Mark of Mastery Exam had been postponed. Then again, Celestia had become quite well known for her ability to just smile and keep a brave face in spite of everything she faced.

"We'll bring them home, Master... I promise." she said to Cormack. As far as the girl was concerned, they weren't just allies or comrades, they were her friends. And she would sooner give herself over to the Darkness than to see any of her friends do so. Celestia activated her button to call on her Armor. After this, she summoned her Keyblade and used it to open a way into the Lanes Between, "Now let's see where the Wayfinders take us to..." she looked down at the Wayfinder she took for herself. It was a faded shade of pink and its edges and borders were a bright, silvery white. After a moment she looked to her fellow pupils to make sure they too were ready before leaving home for the first time in her life.

Dawn's light had just begun to stretch over the horizon. It was a lovely sunrise, one that normally would promise an equally beautiful day. But for the builders, a bright and sunny day just meant a heated day's work. That wouldn't stop them, though. Too much blood and sweat had put into the Great Wall for the construction to just end, especially when it was so close to completion. And so, as the morning light grew ever brighter, the builders emerged from their tents and quarters to greet the rising sun and another day of hard work soon began. The Wall itself symbolized a promise made to the people by their beloved Emperor, that they would be protected from their enemies and it would be done so by their own hands. It was something that quite a few of them found motivation in, and even some of the older builders were vowing to live to see the Wall's completion in their lifetime.

Meanwhile, an opening from the Lanes Between appeared in an isolated bamboo forest some distance away from the construction site. And from that opening emerged a trio of armored figures. The way to the Lanes closed behind them and their armor seemed to melt away into beautiful sparkles of light. Celestia looked down at her Wayfinder, which was indeed showing a faint glow. The Master said that this glow indicated the presence of a piece somewhere in the world. And it could also mean that Master Viper was here somewhere as well, searching for it.

"Alright then. Looks like construction in the distance. What do you say we head in that direction and see if any local people have seen strangers about lately?" she asked her two companions, Tenshi and Ianthe before she began to walk in the direction of the Wall in the distance.

"Well...at least its a city, and not a jungle. That's a start. People means we get to ask questions." grumbled the disgruntled Abel as he stepped around, and held out his way finder to test it. It did just as his teacher indicated it would, and glowed. He huffed out a sigh, and grumbled as he looked around him. "Yeah I'm not good at this thing called 'directions' so I'll just take things as they come alright? Anyone of you gotta a plan? I mean I would say we find out if there are any magic users around here, or failing that we should focus historians. I'm also not good at this whole leadin' thing so someone else take the lead." grumbled Abel as he scratched the back of his neck. He looked at the city, and found it wanting in comparison to some of the others he visited before. Still it wasn't bad looking per say just...less average than he was expecting. Well it was where they would find the first piece of knowledge about the X-Blade at least. Surely Miss Vipes wouldn't be full of it...would she? Well she buggered off so there wasn't much point in whining about it now if she didn't. Big help she was so far leaving her pupils out in the open like this.

X, fixing his shades, sighs as they walked their the new opening. Traverse Town then, was it. Trying kill his eyesight with these horrible neon lights. He listened to Viper’s directions, Wayfinder will glow more brightly once their new their objective got it. X cracks his knuckles and stretches out his back, listening, but pretending not to.

"Well...at least its a city, and not a jungle. That's a start. People means we get to ask questions."

“Are you saying jungle people can’t talk, Abel? That’s highly judgmental of you,” X throws a passing jab at Abel, just to see what his reaction might be, “When we find ourselves in a jungle and find people can talk. I’ll tell them you don’t understand jungle people for you.”

X smirks. He knew how Abel could get sometimes, there was nothing more fun than trying to press his buttons.

Abel continues speaking. Directions. Clearly nervous about trying to take charge.

“Well a good rule of thumb,” X replies, “is not asking for the magical dude or the historian. Hypothetically speaking if the others came on the opposite side of Traverse Town, what’s the very first question they’d ask? Have you seen some folks asking about magical people and historian dudes.”

X pauses staring at the direction Viper had walked off.

“It’s better then to gather information more naturally,” X continues, “Read poster boards, if any. Hear what people are saying and try to making questions about magical things, I don’t know seem less suspicious than where’s some historian.”

X shrugged “Just my thoughts,”

Farce stood more or less beside them all, arms folded behind his head while taking in the situation. There was a lot that was new too him, Traverse Town mainly, but also the feeling of experiencing new worlds and cultures. He glanced around the alley, bending down near a stack of boxes. It felt odd to his fingertips, as if there were different principles in action.

"Hmmm, does this means there are other laws that could be affected by different worlds too?"

After hearing Abel and X's discussion, Farce spoke. "None of that really matters at the moment. Who we do or don't ask, time is of the essence guys," chuckled the youth.

With that he patted the both of them on the back and started off for the first floor. He wondered what he'd see or who he'd bump into ... what exactly was it this "Traverse Town" had to offer. He held up his Wayfinder, hoping for a clue.

"Fine then X you can go and find some asinine board with some notes on it, and see what the local gibbers need killed today in some obnoxiously long filler quest. I'm going to ask around, and actually see what professional people know." mocked Abel as he turned his back on the two of them. He decided to check around the local magic shops wherever they may be. Point of the matter being that needless side quests, and adventurers will just bog down their quest for victory, and justice even more. He didn't care about that sort of donkey crap but he needed to help find the X-blade. X was of the mind that some loser was specifically looking out for a crew of motley teenagers asking around about possible magical artifacts. He wasn't going to mention the X-Blade by its darn name to these people. Just some general questions about possible any legends, or leads. What would be the difference between him, and some kid off on some damn fool hearty adventure...which wasn't far off from what was actually going on.

Traveling through the Lanes Between felt more constricting than Tenshi had thought that it would, had it not been for his steely determination he may not have been able to make it. The first rays of dawn burned his eyes as they came through the portal and into a small bamboo forest. It oddly reminded Tenshi of his home but nothing prepared him for the sight of the massive wall currently under construction. It's sheer mammoth-like size starstruck him as for a moment he forgot that he was on a serious mission and the fifteen year old child burst forth,

"WOAH!! Guys do you see that!! Oh man that thing is HUGEEE..."

As if he suddenly realized who he was and what he was there to do Tenshi quickly straightened up and returned his determined facade to its normal place,

"...*cough* Uh, yeah that seems like the best course of action. I think there is a village just up a head."

And with that Tenshi quickly set off in the direction he mentioned. Taking out his Wayfinder he set his mind back to the task at hand, the Order had been his new home and now it seems that darkness (in one form or another) had come to take his home once again. His friends, Master Viper, the pieces of the X-Blade all of it to Tenshi meant that the darkness had started its march and it was his job to stop it. His friends, however, came first and Tenshi had to save his friends from becoming corrupt and bring them home.
