Ever since you were a child, you could see things -- feel things -- that nobody else could. Of course, they were fleeting sensations. A wisp out of the corner of your eye, a brief chill down your spine, a distant voice you couldn't quite make out. Your family and teachers called it an overactive imagination, and you let them believe that you "grew out of it." But, just because you stopped talking about such things, it didn't mean you stopped seeing them. And lately, they've been growing a bit more vivid. But, you have more important things to worry about...

Welcome to Himikai Academy!

It was a pretty typical brochure: a bright and sunny photo of a pristine school entrance with cherry blossoms fluttering in the wind adorning a pamphlet filled with academic achievements, prestigious clubs, and promises of a successful future. You'd already read through dozens of pamphlets like these and tossed them away. You didn't have the grades to get into a school like this, and you weren't going to be scouted for a sports scholarship anytime soon. However, what surprised you was the letter of acceptance that came with it. Somehow, you were accepted into a school that you never even applied to. The letter was short and sweet:

Greetings, [your name]

We at Himikai Academy are happy to announce that you have been granted admittance in our school. We are aware that you did not submit an application to us, however a certain special interest group believes that you are Himikai material. Your acceptance into the school is contingent upon your membership with our Hunters Club. You will be required to regularly attend their meetings and actively participate in the club's activities to maintain your enrollment in our school. However, if you read through our brochure, you will see that this is a great opportunity for you to get a head-start in life! We look forward to seeing you.

Your parents were thrilled. It was a far more prestigious school than any you had applied to. So, the matter was settled. You'd join their little club and get a chance at an excellent education. The brochure didn't say anything about the club, though, so you'd have to figure it out during the first meeting.

Welcome, everyone, to The Hunters Club! In this RP, you will be playing a student who recently discovers their supernatural abilities with the help of the titular club. Whether you are the descendant of divine practitioners, whether you have youkai blood, or whether you just hit the genetic lottery, you have been scouted for your blooming powers. And, you are about to be plunged into a world of hidden battles against the creatures of lore. The club will teach you, help you hone your abilities, and then you will join the fight that so few can take part in. The premise is pretty simple, and more will develop as the RP progresses. Any questions, feel free to ask!

The Rules

1.) Don’t be a dick. Keep the OOC nice and civil. No name-calling. No condescending remarks. No passive-aggressive snark. Just, like, be cool. If somebody does something that annoys you and you really can’t deal with it, PM me and we can all discuss it like civilized folks.

2.) No godmoding, autohitting, powerplaying, yadda yadda. It’s basic RP etiquette. If you don’t know what those things are, ask me. If you aren’t sure if something you want your character to do is allowed, ask me. If you suspect that somebody is breaking this rule, PM me and I’ll look at it.

3.) I want this to be an active RP, so please post at least once a week. Your posts should be at least one meaty paragraph (5 or more sentences), and that’s a minimum. Your posts should be proofread and mostly free of errors. Typos happen, but make it look like you tried. If you’re having writer’s block, ask for suggestions. Wait for at least two other people to post before you post again. Otherwise, make a collab post with the person you’re interacting with. If you don’t think you can do all that, then this may not be the RP for you.

4.)This RP takes place in the real world, so don't go around killing people. If it's a monster NPC, it's A-okay to attempt a kill, but like it says in rule 1, no autohitting. You declare your actions against an NPC, I decide if it works.

5.) Romance is allowed and encouraged, but keep it PG-13. If things are getting steamy, fade to black, take it to PM’s. Also, I will not allow any rape or domestic abuse, explicit or implied. This is supposed to be a fairly light-hearted RP, and those themes are way too dark.

6.) You get one character. Put your CS in the OOC for review. Do NOT put it in the characters tab until it has been accepted. Do not post your CS until you’re ready to have it reviewed. You can pretty up your CS however you like, just make sure you contain all the relevant info. If you need a placeholder to save your work, use the sandbox forum. Once your CS has been accepted, do not alter it without telling me and getting approval first.

7.) I have the final say. If you wanna talk about an issue or suggest something, that’s cool. I like ideas and I like to listen. But, once I make my decision, let it be. Also, I may add more rules if I need to.

I've got two quick questions in regards to character creation though.

Base Power
I’d really appreciate it if you could list down a few examples for base powers.
I don’t have any concrete ideas at the moment... but the definition of ‘basic’ might differ from person to person. For example; being an instinctive ‘lie detector’ or having ‘enhanced hearing’ seem like low tier skills. But things like ‘super speed’ and ‘conjuring flames’ could be quite advanced depending on how they’re used.

Also going to quote this since it’s very relevant to myself and others.

Rule 5 Domestic Abuse
I’m wondering what you consider to be domestic ‘abuse.’
Obviously, physical torture is off the table since there’s no way of doing that without being all dark and angsty. However what about the more neglectful or emotional kinds?

For example; some people consider it abuse when parents place unreasonable expectations on their kids. Whether it be 5 hours of piano practice per day, or a thorough scolding for not getting straight-A’s. Alternatively there’s neglect; which could be anything from parents that are seldom around (Lets face it, it’s weird when anime protagonist have parents that have gone off on an overseas vacation/work indefinitely and left their middle school kid behind alone). To not providing a kid with lunch/money.

Think all of the above examples could be done without making things too dark.

Base Power:
Shadowsight - Maiya is capable of seeing through shadows. Her sight is closer to scrying than night vision; she doesn't see better in the dark, rather where there's shadow, she can observe as if she's there. At the moment, her range is rather limited at about 30ft, and seeing places out of her line of sight requires intense concentration.

History:
Maiya was never the popular girl, not that she wanted to be. In class, she made a rather deliberate point of keeping her nose planted in a book. She spent most of her non-class time either in her room or in an abandoned corner of the local library. In particular, she read a lot about the supernatural and the occult, hoping to find an explanation for the strange experiences that kept following her.

Supernatural History:
Walking home late one night, Maiya was gripped by a sudden, intense, dread as she passed a particularly dark alley. It took all her willpower to not break out into a run. As she moved away from the alley, she was certain that, whatever it was, it was observing her and waiting for some sign of weakness.
She started taking a different route home.

Appearance:
Standing at Five feet and five inches, Suzue is taller than your average girl and is still growing. She has well kept brown hair, loosely styled that hangs to her shoulders. She has a slight and unassuming frame weighing in at just 120lbs, and overall is very traditionally feminine which is why many people are surprised at just how sturdy and how much physical strength her body hides. While nothing superhuman, she can and will give most other people her age a run for their money in stamina and physical ability. Oddly, she has violet colored eyes - a trait that isn't possible on normal humans.

Thread Manipulation - Jorogumo Ancestry
There are many tales about Jorogumo. Some say they command a legion of spiders that can breathe fire to burn down homes of those looking for them. Other legends say they have a powerful venom that can slowly cause a man to waste away over a few days. But all agree on one thing - they're man-eating monsters that are immune to poison, coldly intelligent and skillful deceivers that often appear as young beautiful women to lure in prey. Is Suzue just the same? Well, determine that for yourself - She's probably not. Probably. Try not to make her angry.

Currently her only ability is that of thread manipulation and creation, and nowhere on the skill level of an actual Jorogumo whose thread is said to be as strong as steel.

History:
Suzue's mom left when she was ten years old. No explanation as to why, or where she was going, she just left and their dad didn't try to stop her. Perhaps she resents him a little for it - but she has a family to take care of.

Growing up being the eldest in a household of eight children isn't something most people usually consider fun, but that's what Suzue has grown up with. With three brothers, four sisters, and a mom that was absent for most of their lives, Suzue took it upon herself to take care of the others. Not that she minded, really. Someone had to do it, and being the eldest she might as well do it herself considering her dads long work hours.

Her life was pretty uneventful after that growing up. As busy as she was, she didn't get much off time. Making sure her siblings had food, cooking, sewing up their clothes, even making new ones for them after awhile. Hand knitted occasionally even! Of course, this also meant she sometimes forgets to take time to herself, but her siblings tend to try not to make her work more than she has too and are always trying to do things themselves...which incidentally ends up making more work for her a lot of the time - not that she really minds.

Supernatural History:
Suzue has no really odd 'supernatural' encounters she can really comment on. Nothing more than what people normally have or see...though perhaps - One time when she was out late, coming home from a friends house late one night after a study session when she was thirteen, something odd happened.

She was minding her own business, walking down the street and happened to accidentally bump into a man. The both of them apologized, with Suzue only realizing a few seconds later - the man had no face whatsoever. Just a blank sheet of skin where his face should be. Cackling gleefully, the man ran off.

Suzue made her way home, more than a little perturbed by the encounter but tried to forget it.

Base Power: Superhuman Physique: Akira is a descendant of Shūten Dōji, the oni king and inherited an Oni’s physiology.

History: Akira was born in Tokyo, a single child to a young couple who ran a flower shop. During his early childhood he didn’t have many friends, he was stronger than a human adult, which was attributed to Muscle Hypertrophy at the time, which caused his peers and care takers to keep him at an arm length away, afraid that he might accidentally hurt them.

This caused him to become the trouble maker of the class, which eventually evolved into delinquency during middle schools and joining a local gang. He wanted to fit in and be respected and the local trouble making group was more than willing to have his strength on their side. With his sheer strength the gang quickly gathered infamy and after winning more and more fights, eventually making his way up to being the leader of his gang of thugs.

Eventually, this caused a rival gang to strike too close to home. A group of thugs came into the flower shop and decided to vandalize it. Smashing up all the pots and furniture and giving his family a near heart attack. Of course Akira wasn’t going to take this sitting down and took retribution, beating up the entire enemy gang almost single handedly. Though during all this, he came to realize that he had brought this upon himself and continuing being a part of the gang will end up hurting his family and decided to quit, when it was just pottery and wooden shelves being smashed. Not wanting to have it escalate further, he went back to school and tried to keep his head down, so he could graduate.

Supernatural History:
Akira can recall an event in his life where he could see as “supernatural” in origin or at least rather strange. He was taking a walk in the middle of the night. When he heard someone calling out to him, thinking it was someone he new he turned to them only to see a hooded figure.

He didn’t know who it was, but something told him not to stick around, but before he could walk away. The figure jumped him and pushed him against the wall, overpowering him. Before meeting him face to face and allowing him to see the figure’s face. It was a woman, but her face was distorted, revealing a pair of horns, and a mouth filled with fangs.

He heard her say something along the lines of: “You’re not him!” And afterwards, the woman let go of him and jumped away into the night.

@RaikaSomething like "conjuring flame" would be a basic power. Mind you, at the basic level, you'd only be able to conjure small flames at first, and you'd gradually get better at it. As for the domestic abuse question, as a rule of thumb, if the CPS would get involved, that's too dark.

@Nerdy Reference Looks okay. Just make a note of why she has powers. Is she descended from a spiritualist? Does she have youkai blood? Put that in and she's accepted.

Her hobbies are reading books and watching movies, but she prefers the last one. Always does she do this things outside, even in the rain, on their covered terrace. She also loves to take care of the garden, she does it all the time. The moments she takes a break, she watches a movie on her laptop.

Her 'Base Power' is that she has 'weather manipulation'. In the most advanced form people can change the weather into anything they want, when they want it and even where. Some trained magicians use it to right as in letting it rain and using the water against there opponent, others use fire from the very hard burning sun and others use it to balance sun and rain to keep the nature healthy (in a good way to help people). In most cases, you begin with manipulating the temperature as this is the most basic form.

She owns this power by making contact with several spirits - which she thinks are imaginative friends she created herself - who allow her this power.

History
She lives as a lonely child with her biological mother and father who she calls by their first names. Never does she go to friends or ask them over, never does she talk about others which make her parents think that she doesn't have friends at all and prefers to entertain herself alone.

Her bond with her parents is very distant as she often tried to get their attention, but her mother and father own a company together and prefer to give attention to that instead of their own child. After some years, she just gave up on them.

Her family keeps a big and dark secret from her. It involves an older brother she had in the past. Nobody wants to tell her what actually happened to him. There was a funeral, but no body. Is he dead? Is he missing? Is he kidnapped? Did he just leave town? She doesn't know. Based on the last talk she ever had with him - which nobody of the family knows about - she thinks her parents have something to do with his disappearance and blames them up until now for him being away and them not telling anything about what they know.

On Thursday she goes to an old lady that she calls 'grandma' and her son who she calls 'dad'. Neither of them is actually family of her, but she has a better bond with the two then with either of her parents. She goes on Thursdays, because then they get visit of the son of her 'dad' who is in his twenties and often plays with her.

Supernatural History
When she was just 9 years old, she went on a trip to a theme park with her both parents. It was a big surprise for her as her dad told her before that he and her mother wouldn't have time that day, it was her birthday present. Bad luck did she have when it became so hot that day that she started feeling a bit ill. They still had a very nice day, but she lost some time waiting inside until she felt better.

Suddenly a very soft and cold wind blew through the window, which made her get better faster and enjoying more of the day in the theme park. It was just one very gentle breeze of cold wind. Nobody did know where it ccame from as there wasn't any wind to find outside, but she just blamed it on good luck.

Everleigh Davies, 15 y/o female

Her hobbies include competitive sports,she plays soccer and lacrosse in different seasons. She loves being outdoors and enjoys camping, climbing trees, and sunshine. She's a very active person and does not enjoy being cooped up inside all day. Her favorite sport is soccer, but she also plays ice hockey when she can. Goes for runs in the rain.

Her powers- her power is that she's a super-warrior, kinda like Captain America. She got her powers as she's descended from one of the very first female warriors, Nittaya Chansiri-Gason, who was supposedly blessed by God and given the powers to overrun the evil spirits near her town and home. These powers include enhanced speed, reflexes, and strength, her reflexes and speed allow her to dodge bullets.

History
Everleigh's mum died when she was young, so Everleigh never got to meet her. Her mum was Thai and her father European, she appeared to be full European to most people as she has golden hair, bright blue eyes and looks like her father. Her father has Irish, British, and Scottish ancestors while her mother's descended from Thailand and Laos. She has three older brothers named Conner, Cole, and Curtis, they all look like their father as well(except for Curtis).

Her father is a wealthy businessman and is CEO of Davies Enterprises, a company that make electronics and mass sell other types of objects, similar to Amazon. He gives her enough attention but Everleigh never really wants it. She's considered a "mean girl" at school because of her popularity status though she's actually very nice.

Supernatural history
The very first time it happened was when she couldn't remember it. Everleigh's parents were in a fight(she was 2 years old) and Everleigh let out a piercing scream, jumping right out of her crib(mhm) and getting in the middle of her parents, using each of her small little hands to keep them apart. She did easily and then as someone's hand reached out Everleigh, quick as a flash, grabbed the hand, cracked it down, and then returned back to the position. She hasn't done it since but doesn't know that her powers get triggered by fighting and danger.

Base Power: Telekinesis. At its basic level, Akio can levitate and manipulate small and light objects within his line of sight using his mind (though gestures can help him visualize what he wants to do more easily). He isn’t sure, but his powers are probably connected with the fact that one set of his grand-grandparents owned and managed a small temple.

History: Middle school was probably the time Akio truly realized how different he was from the other children. Even though his parents and some teachers noticed even earlier that he had an “overactive imagination,” it didn’t trouble him personally until he made the mistake of mentioning it too many times to his school-mates. They first thought he was just playing around, but eventually either accused him of being a liar or simply got annoyed with him. As such, Akio delved rather strongly into several solitary activities.

He got into video games initially just to blend in with others a bit more, which at least prevented him from being a complete loner. His parents tried their all to be as supportive as they could, but Akio knew they worried the more the older he was. Eventually, he simply learned to say that fantasy really interested him, and his mum and dad were both relieved once he convinced them he didn’t believe those things to be real anymore. His dad took him hiking on the rare occasions he had the time to do so, and his mam helped him take care of Sora when he first got him for his 12th birthday, showing him how to prepare the lizard’s food and the like. Akio basically got whatever games and other material possessions he wanted, because his parents believed that was much healthier than him going around trying to convince people spirits were real.

His parents even took him once to a particular temple once, and he learned that it once belonged to their family, though someone else obtained it some decades ago. That visit started Akio’s photo album dedicated solely to temples and shrines, though his attempts to capture a spirit on film have been in vain. He does still secretly keep a sketch-book for depicting the occasional spirit he sees, but he has also drawn and painted several that he only found about on the internet. His efforts to adapt to society’s expectation has gained him the select few friends in school, though he’s still more of a quiet and solitary boy.

Supernatural History: He was very, very young, somewhere at the start of elementary school perhaps, and he had wandered into a forest, getting a bit lost as he curiously went from tree to tree to explore. On the way, he met a very pretty lady standing by a tree and he wanted to ask her the way out. He was almost dazzled by how beautiful she was, but thankfully managed to catch the creepy factor to the scene in time. An incredibly tiny arm, red as if from blood, slowly began descending from the tree and made grabbing motions at him. The lady tried to distract him, but Akio wrenched his gaze away, turned in the other direction and ran. He ran, and ran, eventually making it out of the forest and home. He still remembers that one tree and had avoided that one forest for years, only a year or so ago managing to overcome his fear enough to give it another visit. Even though he had been young and terrified back then, he had indeed drawn about the event. Naturally, his parents weren’t overjoyed when he showed them the picture and half in excitement half in fear tried telling them all about the pretty lady who almost got him murdered. This was one of the major events that made him somewhat more cautious about what to tell whom.

Sora Ikeda

Base Power: Smoke Breath – Enenra Ancestry
Enenra are yōkai made up of wisps of smoke, which rise up into the sky from fires; they are the personification of smoke. As a descendant of an Enenra, Sora possesses some small control over smoke, so far only manifesting as the ability to create moderate quantities of smoke via his breath; he can exhale a cloud of smoke, similar in constitution to that created by a wood fire, at will.

History: Ever since he was young Sora knew he was a little bit different. For one, he could see things that other people could not.

As a child Sora was something of an outcast due to being just a little bit… strange. He would stare into space and talk about things that no-one else could see and insist that they were real; his teachers said they were imaginary friends and that they were perfectly normal for a boy so young, while he would deny this and say they weren’t his friends, he could just see them and didn’t know why anyone else could. The other children would just ignore him.

It didn’t take long for his parents to intervene. They told Sora that the things he could see, the strange things that no-one else noticed were a secret that only his family knew about. Other people couldn’t see them, only he and his mother could since they were both special, and it wasn’t polite to point at or talk about things that no-one else could see. It was not the whole truth, but it was enough explanation for a small child to understand and to begin acting “normal” around his peers; it was enough for his teachers to stop giving him worried looks when he wasn’t looking and for the other children to stop avoiding him.

As he grew older he began to understand more and he began to grow tired of always ignoring the things he saw. He read about Japanese history and culture, about myths and legends, and began to notice similarities between the stories and the things he could see. When he was eight he asked his mother about it, about the things they could both see and why they were both “special” as she liked to call it. So she told him, she told him about yōkai and spirits, how they were real even though everyone said they weren’t; she even told him about their family’s heritage and how they were descended from a yōkai themselves and it was this heritage that made them special.

Supernatural History: Sora has been able to see small spirits for most of his life, for so long that it no longer seems strange to him. Living in a fairly rural part of country it was not at all uncommon to see Hinotama of various types in the woods or out on the lake near his home and although from an early age he had to get used to the idea that no-one outside of his family could see the same things that he, but it is safe to say that he is not scared of the supernatural.

One event in particular stands out however. When he was twelve years old Sora went down to the lakeside at night with a couple of friends to stargaze. It was the perfect night for it, an incredibly peaceful night with no wind and not a cloud in the sky, the kind of night where the lake is so still it looks like a mirror of the sky, every single star reflected in its surface. On this night, there were even a few extra lights to be seen alongside the stars.

As he was looking out at the lake Sora spotted a single fiery orb floating above the middle of the water. It looked different from the other lights he would sometimes see, larger and lively, dancing and bobbing around enough that he became mesmerised by it. As he watched he saw other, similar light join it, then a few more, then a dozen more until it looked like there were hundreds of dancing lights streaming across the lake; it was like nothing he had ever seen before. After a while the lights drew together, not reducing in number but clustering to become a single shape; together they formed a single line of lights, like a serpent, flying over the lake, writhing and dancing until it disappeared.

That was the first and last time Sora ever saw the Ryūtō, the Dragon Lights, on that lake.

I had been thinking that she's a dedicated student of the supernatural. That is to say, she's first generation magical. Prior to getting her power, magic would just be something she's read about, and, after, a subject to study.

Would that be acceptable, or is some explicitly supernatural upbringing required?

@Squirrel98 A couple of things. Explain why her relationship with her parents is so distant. Not even calling them "Mom and Dad" is pretty extreme. Also, her power is a bit much to start out with. A 9-year-old shouldn't be able to interfere with international travel. Maybe pick one aspect of the weather she can manipulate to start with, like conjuring a wind. Don't worry, there will be room to grow.

@SlayyyGirl Your character seems quite a bit overpowered as a starting point. Dodging bullets and kung-fu toddlers is definitely a bit much as a starting point. Keep in mind, you'll have room to grow into your powers as the RP progresses, so bullet-dodging will be a possibility in the future. I expected someone to say that. Alrighty then, innate martial arts sounds good. She's nice but perceived as mean because the crowd she hangs out with is considered "mean" to others, the crowd isn't your typical mean girl sorta crowd but are considered this only by people who don't know them well. Everyone's actually very nice in the group but are perceived as mean by others because of their popularity status.

It would be understandable if she hung out with a group of snooty, condescending people, but not if everybody in the group is nice.
