Making it in this business is far from easy. It requires extreme dedication, hard work, and immense determination. Scripts get turned down, things you direct will get edited to the point that only vaguely resemble your original vision. Even worse than that, your ‘vision’ could get panned. Nobody is perfect, but still. People try. They attach themselves to the idea of being in ‘the business,’ of being in the know. Getting to meet celebrities, making money, winning awards, even just people seeing what you’ve created…
All of these are some of the many intriguing reasons that people still come to Hollywood for their ‘shot.’ The shot in question is the opportunity to produce one of Hollywood’s big budget summer blockbuster films. To direct it, to star in it. To finally have a chance at the big leagues, where the money is. The writers are quietly hoping they’ll start a franchise, or — God willing — a cinematic universe, the director is dreaming of impressing the studio and getting signed on for ten more films. Actors and actresses are hoping its their big break. Everyone on the team is hoping this is their breakaway. The chance to really make it, and to show everyone what they can do.
Of course, there’s always the chance that it flops. Or that the studio edits the director’s vision into some garbage that’s hardly what the director put together. There’s a lot of moving parts in something like this, and if one things goes bad then the whole thing is toast.
Everyone needs to do their job right, and together, the team can make something beautiful.
