Profile
Appearance NED is a heavily modified CP0 protocl droid. His outer plating has been removed or shifted, bolts have been strengthened and joins improved. He is heavier, but far more agile, quick, and emotive than a common protocol droid. Unlike most droids, NED prefers to keep himself clothed, usually adopting the uniform of his fellow officers.
He usually paints himself in the camoflauge appropriate for whatever environment he is in. This his face and arms are usually one color scheme but some chipped or faded paint reveals some of the layers underneath. His eyes are unusually emotive, with the line in the middle being able to fully rotate 360 degrees. NED is has been scratched into his back in bold letters. Along his forearm there are 17 tally marks, they are usually hidden by long sleeved shirts or jackets. It is quite unusual to see a droid with clothes on but he feels he would wear the uniform same as everyone else. This usually leads to him looking more formal amd military like than other officers.
Background Built on Ord Thoden, NED was a standard protocol droid bought and maintained for private use. The droid's singular owner, a kindly old engineer by the name of Nathaniel, looked kindly upon the droid and named him Droidy. It was a terrible name, but he thought it was funny at the time. He made the droid to be his personal project. Changing and improving his protocol droids design to make him more independant and agile which is highly unusual. Nathaniel travelled to impoverished villages, towns, and districts and used his skills to make the lives of the people there better. It truly was a noble pursuit, and the protocol droid couldn't help but notice. The droid also couldn't help but notice a common pattern amongst the struggles of the people there- the Empire.
During a routine revisit to the rural mining town of Pyerla, Stormtroopers put the town under martial law. The place was crushed into submission and the workers were threatened into flat out cruel labors. The Empire expected more valuable materials quickly, and was fine with working Pyerla to the bone and then callously discarding it aside once through. A sadistic officer named Roe Danek was particulary fond of exerting his authority over the people beneath him. During a particularly brutal beating of a father who dared stand up to him, Nathaniel intervened. He had been silent for weeks, just trying to make the occupation more bearable, but he had enough. He told his droid to stay back and not to interfere no matter what happened. Nathaniel always was a pacifist. He hated conflict. So when he walked up to Roe and firmly asked that he stop beating this man there was nothing to back him up. Maybe he could have led a revolution, be he insisted that would only make things worse. It was during this encounter that Nathaniel was shot dead in the streets of Pyerla by Roe, who looked on him barely and left him there.
His droid felt terrible, something he'd never felt before. He saw the situation escalating, but Nathaniel told him not to intervene. The droid learned valuable lessons that day and from his early life with Nathaniel that would go on to effect his world view. That was four years ago, just months before the battle of Yavin.
Deciding the Empire was an issue that needed solving, he decided to seek out the Rebellion. It took the droid months to organize his escape from Ord Thoden, but eventually he was a lone protocol droid with a ship and the galaxy in front of him. He didn't find the Rebellion, but he did find the Scarlet Moons. The downtrodden, abandoned, and persecuted are their specialty, so they took the droid in. It wasn't long before the droid proved his worth, both as a translater, medic, and morale booster. The droid had a calming presence. During a mission that was going particularly poorly, the droid took it upon himself to grab the blaster of a fallen trooper and start shooting. Perhaps he wasn't the most effective soldier, but the sight of the scrappy protocol droid joining the fray may have inspired the despairing troops back into the action. Victory was theres soon after. When making sure there were no storm troopers left, the squad leader was checking in through various radios when the droid responded after checking a house. "No empire dogs," He said bluntly. The soldiers became fond of the phrase and began using it, eventually it became the motto of their regiment and the droid earned the name NED. No Empire Dogs.
Proving his competence and gaining the true respect of the Scarlet Moons, NED rose through the ranks to Lieutanent over the course of 4 years. Now he returns to the space above his homeworld, aiming to finally avenge Nathaniel by freeing the people of Ord Thoden.
Outlook and Motivation NED has an intrinsically positive outlook on life. He highly values self-reflection and responsibility. That all living beings have a duty to being kind to each other. This belief can often be called naive, and perhaps he is. But he knows that action must be taken to ensure that those who wish to control and tyrannize others must be stopped. He knows that the battle for freedom is not neverending, and though there may be great suffering ultimately there will be liberty and equality everywhere. Currently he believes the greatest enemy of the Good Future, as NED calls it, is the Empire. Justice must be discovered, and then unjust systems must be destroyed. That is why he fights, and why he is often so calm during even the most desperate moments.
Capabilities
Characteristics PPRESENCE, Primary Characteristic: NED's leadership is perhaps his greatest skill. Always steadfast, trustworthy, and trusting, it is difficult not to fight one's hardest when this droid is beside oneself. He is good at reading people and finding the best words to say if he can. His optimistic presence is palpable.
BRAWN, Secondary Characteristic: Being a modified protocol droid, NED is quite capable in a fight. His metallic arms are strong, his frame capable of absorbing damage and his aim is usually true.
Language(s) Six million languages.
Skills and Connections Robotics Knowledge: NED was taught by Nathaniel the basics of robotics, and is fully capable of maintaining his own systems without assistance.
Medical Knowlege: NED isn't a medical droid nor a combat medic, but he is not totally incapable when it comes to first aid and trauma. It is something he picked up early on in his life due to how many injures he and his master came across.
Flaws Naivete: By believing in the best in people, NED can be easily lied too in a social setting. He lets his guard down easily when not in a warzone.
Hesitant: NED can be too defensive or slow to act. He would let an opportunity slip when perhaps seizing it would be better. Making a plan and sticking to it is his specialty, and improvisation can be dangerous and puts the lives of those around him at risk.
