Some call us superhumans, some call us enhanced, some even call us freaks of nature.

Over time, the ‘politically correct’ term has become Variant -- as in, a variation of the normal human genome. We’re said to have an anomaly in our genetic code that allows us to manifest certain powers or abilities.

No explanation as to how or why or where this came from...either way, it’s a major source of conflict in our world.

While the world struggles to figure out what to do with Variants, the Variants struggle to find their place in the world.

There are those who want to try and maintain ordinary lives just like everyone else...perhaps use their abilities to help a few people or get ahead in life.

Some prefer to play the hero, believing that their abilities were somehow bestowed upon them for upholding some grand responsibility.

And, yet, there are those who would rather watch the world burn just to see if anything will rise from the ashes...

Apparently, a normal life isn’t an option for someone who can turn into ice or has armored skin or can read minds...too much to ask, it seems.

But with every struggle, there’s a story...and this is ours.

Plot Overview

Over the past several weeks, there has been a sudden influx of disappearances in New Haven, a city known for increasing levels of Variant-related crimes. All attempts by local law enforcement to solve these missing persons cases have turned up cold. Investigators who appear to be close to a solution end up disappearing themselves. Most of these have been random unfortunate victims, both human and Variant alike, with zero connections between them. Wrong place, wrong time. Lately, however, a few of those who vanished have been Nobles. When the 'best and brightest' start getting captured, it becomes a real problem. Whatever is taking place here, it can't be good at all...

Meanwhile, the tech-heads at Chimera are cooking up a little scheme of their own. Rumors are swimming around that they may be targeting a major facility in the very near future. Whether or not the sources are reliable, the very fact that these rumors have come up is raising a few eyebrows and putting several people on alert…Chimera is not to be played with.

In the wake of these recent events, an unlikely assemblage of heroes arises from the shadows to combat the rising criminal threat...

  • Pariah Underground and independents only...though I may allow Nobles if enough players want it (debating on it)
  • N.O.V.A. / M.A.D. agents are non-playable; strictly for NPCs and background (suggestions for agents are welcome, though)
  • Non-Variant characters are welcome
  • Class 5 Variants are not allowed
  • No villains; having a character that inherently cause trouble for others is acceptable as long as it doesn’t cause major plot disruptions (please PM me if you’re unsure about anything)
  • This RP is 18+, however, keep anything overly explicit to PM’s please if it gets to that point
  • This is taking place in the year 2130 in an alternate version of America
  • Have fun!!!

@Tortoise
Jason looks good. The memory control is just enough to where it shouldn't be abused too heavily, so that works well. He's all the way approved!

@jetipster
Welcome back, my friend! Let's try this again, shall we? Felix is good to go!

@PrankFox
I like this dude. Question, though...does he have to have any other knowledge about animals he turns into other than sightings or pictures? And how detailed do the pictures have to be? If it's an animal that he had no prior knowledge of, could he just automatically take its form and know how it properly use it?

@Roughdragon1
Very cool concept so far. Seems like quite the trickster. I'm interested in seeing how this power will be used.

@Ymbrine
Can I just say I really love the marking ability? It's like creating a personal spawn point! I can already picture some cool stuff going on with that in my head. She's approved!

@Eclektik He needs to have at least a fundamental understanding of the creatures attributes and capabilities, and the photos have to be fairly well detailed, not a sketch or just a part of the creature. A well rendered depiction of an extinct creature could also be used, provided it's physically accurate to biology. If there's anatomical diagrams or he can study it in person even better, that makes it easier for him to change into that animal. He'd also have no way of changing into a creature that's just been described to him, no matter how detailed it is.

Ok, cool. Sounds good...kinda what I figured in my head, but I just wanted to make sure I had the right idea about it. Approved, my friend!

This looks interesting, I came here from the int check and there’s just one thing I didn’t catch, if I just missed it I’ll find it, but why would a variant willingly give their information to N.O.V.A. in the first place, if not to become a Noble? Is there no other reason than for that?

This looks cool so I might make a character if there’s still room

@Blizz
There's definitely room for more, so thanks for the interest!

So, this is something that's varied slightly in the different iterations of this RP...and until you just mentioned it, I hadn't realized I didn't refine it for this version when I added the Nobles. So, honestly, other than to become a Noble, a variant giving his/her information to NOVA would be more or less a courtesy. It's not illegal for a variant to use his/her abilities in a non-threatening way -- like if a doctor has healing abilities, for example. Abilities have been banned from several sports, however, because they can provide an unfair advantage.

So, now that I think about it, I can really adjust my system just a tad, since it doesn't make much since for a variant to register with NOVA for literally no reason.

@Eclektik

Good to know, I plan to make a character whose abilities involve manipulating someone’s senses and nervous system. An illusionist with with noble goals of lasting peace through the violent methods of getting rid of people who threaten the idea peace. Essentially an anti-government anarchist who kills the corrupt by screwing with their five senses and their nerves.

Edit : I just remembered no villains allowed...though the idea behind my character someone is does good through violent means, it’s possible my character could ultimately be seen as a villain depending on who’s side someone is on. I’ll let you make the final decision once you’ve read her. She’s a kind of Robin Hood/punisher thing where she breaks the law and attacks the corrupt but does it for the sake of the people

@Blizz
I felt really sad for Talia reading that background...makes sense for a vigilante. Also, vigilantes are 100% welcome, so her 'mode of operations' is perfectly fine. I wouldn't put her in the villain category even though she kills people...it would just put her on several people's radar. Everything else is good as far as abilities and all that, so she is approved!
