Welcome to our newest Slice of Life RP in set in hot DELTA CITY, loosely based on Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL in the late 1980's.
If you enjoy Slice of Life and want a COMMITTED and PROVEN to last roleplay, then this is the game you have been looking for. We have a vested group of players and GM staff that genuinely enjoy the genre that would love to welcome you into the world we have created. We have plans for new regular events and for an over-arching plot line that will allow players freedom to grow and expand with us and our fun environment. You will find again, that our game is unlike any other that you have encountered here on the Guild.
Players here are encouraged to suggest an idea or submit a new location for our MAP. We invite players to add to the world their own ideas and concepts so that we continually expand. We were so fortunate in our original Slice of Life game, SOL CITY to capture enough hearts and imaginations over the course of three chapters, that we are setting off on a new and unique journey for our FOURTH SLICE OF LIFE game which will be the best one yet; learning from what worked well in over 2000 posts of Slice of Life role play.
Fear not! You needn’t have read a single page of SOL CITY to freely participate in this current game. DELTA CITY is an entirely new concept taking place far before the events of Sol City. Some returning players might recognize a blurb or catch a casual reference here or there, but this game is meant to be a fresh and separate experience for all players.
W E L C O M E
DELTA CITY is the largest city on the US Gulf Coast in our fictitious universe, taking the place of the Tampa Bay area, the surrounding geography and parts west western Florida during the latter 1980's. Neon light, pastel pallets and sun-soaked clearwater beaches await the young and bold alike. The "Peculiar Paradise" is a mix of Spanish architecture, South-American influences, Native-American culture and southern hospitality.
So explore enjoy, start anew and make your mark. The city awaits…
The Rules
Not scary don't worry
RULES
1. Observe standard RPing rules. No godmoding, no-metagaming, stay in character, and stay within the storyline. If you want to make any major changes to the story, ask us first. Be polite to the other members. You know the drill.
2. Write in third person, past tense. Try to make your writing coherent and legible. Although there's no official word requirement, avoid one-liners when possible. 2b. Move the plot when you post! This is a “slice-of-life” RP, but please try and focus on forwarding the story with every post you make. We don’t want every other post here to be your characters leisurely having tea or monotonously deciding on what clothes to wear. We have a very dynamic world here that you can use to develop your characters. 2c. Interacting solely with your own NPC or secondary PC is not allowed. It's far more fun writing with someone than yourself for you and all the other players.
3. You are not your character. Your character is not you. Please don't be offended because someone else's character was mean to yours. Likewise, please do not carry real-life arguments into the RPG world. This applies to RPG Guild, Discord and any other platforms that may be used.
4. Primary character images need to be in an anime-style. Also no crossovers and no Mary/Gary Sue, please.
5. Try not to let anyone get left behind. If you and another person have posted back and forth several times, take a break and let the other players catch up. Of course, there may be times when only a few characters need to be involved in a particular scene; just don't get two days ahead of someone without giving them the chance to respond.
6. Stay active! Everyone gets busy from time to time, but if you’re going to be absent for a while just let us know. There’s no set amount of time allowed for before we start working around dormant players, but if you leave and stay gone without telling us, we’ll move on as we see fit and the plot will roll on without you. If you wish to come back after being naughty, we’ll talk. 6b. I'm waiting for the next skip!. This is rather unhelpful and it saps momentum from the game. If possible, ask in the OOC, Discord or PM and try not to just be stuck waiting for a time or event that suits your tastes, particularly when there are other players around who might enjoy writing with you. Of course we understand some situations do resolve faster than others, but the goal here is for maximum player interaction and FUN.
7. This game is rated PG-13+, so just about anything goes as far as language, violence, sex, etc. However, you will need to observe standard Guild rules should you feel that your posting is headed in this direction. Please read the Moderator posts concerning these topics.
8. Second characters are allowed. You have to be an active player and both male and female are allowed. You cannot RP with yourself, PERIOD. Please PM or Tag a GM or Co GM to confirm things if you have any questions regarding this and genders allowed at the time. WE WILL BE WATCHING THIS CLOSELY.
9. If you want to use our setting to carry on a 1x1 with another player, then we need to know about it. This is so other players don't waste time trying to pointlessly engage your characters. We are going to be verydiscerning in allowing this and if you and another player appear to be pursuing this route without letting the staff and other players know, both will be kindly asked to leave.
10. Anachronisms- The setting for this time period is in the 1980s. Cellphones are rare, computers perform basic functions and are very expensive- people's lives were much more localized in general. There is no way we could name and moderate every aspect of the setting, however you will definitely need to keep this in the forefront of your writing as the social landscape during this time was much different. If you wanted to talk to someone, you had to meet them face to face and get a phone number or go visit. No texting, no internet, no next-day delivery and television stations typically “signed-off” programming after the late night news. We’re not going to shake the fist at every little thing, but glaring inaccuracies will kill the setting and bring about other continuity problems. The purpose of doing this game in this time period was that it would be a different and fun experience.
11. Obviously this isn’t going to cover everything, so the GM and Co-GM’s reserve the right to make decisions as situations arise.
In general the RP is using a permissive rule system, as long as events are not too likely to effect other players or alter the dynamics of the RP heavily. These actions do not require permission.
Events are rough backdrops and scenes and open to player interpretation within reason. If you are unsure about the application, PM a GM or Co GM to make sure, and consult with those player or players who may be effected before hand. If a secret or surprise action this is permissible via PM or discord etc.
This is to maximize creative options and make it open and easy to join and take part in RP.
Thank you for reading the rules! Hope you have fun RPing with us!
Current gender balance
8 male : 6 female
Please consider this when planning a new character.
CS Sheet
Name: (First & Last, middle if you like) Age: (needs to be between 18-35) Appearance: (anime-style picture please, you can also include a description if you like) Height: Weight: Likes: Dislikes: Zodiac Sign: (His/Her personality doesn't have to be a perfect fit for their sign) Special Talent: (Any particular thing your character is good at?) Profession: (What you do and where you work) Bio/Personality: (one paragraph minimum, more is fine) Your character's favorite song: (We just think this would be interesting. Keep in mind the time period! Their favorite song couldn't be something that hasn't been recorded yet.) Recent History: What has your character been up to the last month or year? Did they just move to Delta or are they local? A paragraph is fine, but put as much as you want. Actor or Actress/Public Figure who would play your Character in a movie (Optional, we just think it can better help get an idea of your Character. We have found that players often "combine" the actor image with their header image to get a good mental picture of your character. *This does not have to be restricted by time period, you can choose a modern actor*. )
(Reference images to plot elements, or for helping to describe a character are allowed. Please make these in hiders, real life, anime or drawn etc are allowed in this case.)
The following personal bio is not required (though CS Section 2 IS required), but we strongly encourage you to at least put a little something. In the past we have found that when players get to know each other as real people, not just as names on a screen, it helps the longevity of the game. Seriously, please get to know your fellow players.
Tell us about yourself:
*Your age: *What part of the world are you from? *How many years have you been writing/roleplaying: (if you're on your first year, that's totally fine too) *How often do you have time to post? (this is just a general, honest question, no judgment) *Anything else you want to mention? What you do for a living? How much do you work a week? What do you enjoy doing besides writing? Put as much as you want.
"These are the things that make a good story great and good writers even greater."
CS section 2 - Player Interaction Scale
Very Simple: Are you, as a PLAYER more a solo/small group poster or would you consider yourself a social butterfly open for anything?
Choose a number from 1-5 telling us where you would rate yourself in the above criteria. ONE being the least interactive and FIVE being the most.
There is no wrong answer so please be honest. It helps us as GM Staff work out the best way to support our players and plan events that will appeal to everyone.
Locations
City & Governmental
Downtown
The Gateway to the Gulf - The heart of what keeps Delta city running.
Home to many things, downtown is one place you have to go for something at some stage. Be it voluntary or not, Downtown is always a busy place with places to be, people to see and bail bonds to be paid.
City Hall
Permits, taxes, tickets, applications and endless paperwork. City hall is your one stop shop for long waits, thick forms and a long afternoon spent in waiting rooms.
The old grand hall often plays host to many large scale civic events, happy marriages, unhappy marriages, divorce filings and more at the registrar's office.
Many have come to love or hate(mostly) a trip to city hall. Its niches, corners and secluded spots have spawned many forbidden office romances and political plots.
NAS Delta City
Kick the tires and light the fires! Welcome the hot shots and top guns of Naval Air Station Delta City. NASDC is a master-jet base and home to several squadrons of F-8 Crusaders, F-4 Phantoms and A-4 Skyhawks though some have transitioned to the new F-14 and F-18 platforms. The echoing roar of afterburners is a regular occurrence and watching the aircraft take off and land is popular for young and old alike. Take your boat out for an even better view particularly during the immensely popular, annual Neptune Festival Air Show.
Delta Zoo
Delta Zoo hosts every animal from A to Z in the city, founded by a Public Works project in 1930, it's still a family favorite for generations.
Old Shelly, or sometimes old shell back was a baby giant tortoise bright back by sailors after WW1 and has been present at the zoo since its founding. Shelly has lived at the Zoo her entire life and marveled visitors for decades. In that time she has grown from a tiny baby to titanic tortoise and helped establish her species in a conservation program.
Also popular is the new Delta Butterfly Sanctuary as part of the latest expansion of Delta Zoo and partnership with the Florida Wilderness Reserve. Travelers and researchers worldwide can enjoy a cornucopia of butterfly species enjoying the tropical climates. A popular place for dates and a wonder to children alike.
Mandarin Park
Want a quiet Sunday afternoon away from the hustle and busy concrete streets?
Mandarin Park is the place to escape, on the site of an large estate belonging to a mining tycoon, a tragic fire destroyed the property and history removed the rest. Later purchased by the city it was turned over to use as a new recreation park.
Slow walks wind through green shady Willows, while small ponds and follies dot the routes helping to keep cool on a sweaty humid day.
Follow the sculpture trail, lie back in the sun or for the more active join the regular amateur ball teams, various clubs or the outdoor tennis courts, just bring a bat and ball.
Alligator sightings are common, but no fear as long as it's under three feet, our experienced wildlife team will round up the scaly swamp rat!
Delta International Airport
ICAO code:KDIA or as the pilots often refer to it: "Destroyed In Arrival". The approach is clean and clear, but storms out of the coast can make landing on the numbers a challenge even for the most experienced pilots. For passengers, baggage claim can be another challenge altogether. Local legends purport an unseen population of gremlins recruited living under the airport that enjoy making sure your bags make it to Dallas or Anchorage instead of claim belt.
The largest and most modern airport in the Delta city area flying people national, international and locally via the helicopter air transport desk skipping the traffic to your hotel or meeting in a rush with money to burn.
A recent addition replacing the old airport with gleaming glass, latest brands duty free stores and capacity for dozens of flights at any one time. Designed by famed local architect Mike Mathews incorporating a full size indoor go kart track plus arcade.
Various airlines serve the airport including all the standard nationals, Daedalus International is a new arrival to Delta City run alongside international regulars Pan-Am, United and of course Delta with regular service to Atlanta. European/Asian flag carriers British Airways, Air France, Air China and Japan Airways to name but a few.
Fly Delta and enjoy what the city has to offer.
West Delta Public Library
West Delta Library, the center of the city for bookworms, students and the studious alike. One of the largest resources in local history from Roman roads to modern interstates, if it's a question we can probably answer it.
Our growing computer lab is available by booking only so please inquire at the desk and let us know what you need. As always the card-catalog will guide you to the work of your choice
Originally donated to the city by a rich industrialist in 1890, Scott McDuck and his original generous gift to the city has grown to become the largest public library in the city and one of the overall largest in the eastern US. Part of the nationwide book share we can get books from any public depository in the United States for a small fee and a week or two wait.
Delta City Police Dept
I don't believe you for a New York minute! -Said someone, once, maybe.
If you know the accommodations here, a 5 star hotel this place not be. Breakfast sometimes ends up with an expired MRE from the nearby Naval Station and the sweaty cot you just slept on may be just as nutritious.
Known to local trouble makers as "the deep", DCPD is one of the few Florida locations with a basement where the holding cells are dark, wet and humid. Time passes slowly, unable to tell what time it is bar day or night in a tiny angled window with only the sound of traffic overhead. If your trip ends here. You probably need a lawyer.
SWAT, Vice and other Departments are all centrally based here.
Delta City Fire Dept
Hot muscular men who rescue kittens shirtless with pecs of steel, jawlines even harder and abs that could deflect tank rounds?
Located downtown, Ladder 1 is Delta's first fire company complete with fire pole! These days DCFD is called out for more auto wrecks and people stuck in bathtubs than they are with major fires but stand ready to answer the call 24/7.
For photos of the above, ask Carl, he even rescued a kitten last week soaking wet in a white shirt, signed calendars available. All proceeds to the Fire Family Charity. Supporting current, former and family of the Fire community.
Delta City Container/Shipping Port
Running 24/7 and seven days a week, Port Delta is nothing fancy, but is a major feature of the city. Home to numerous shipping companies, container ships laden with any number of products come and go through the bay regularly and are a standard feature of the waterscape. The work is tough, however getting onboard as a city employee with the union is a coveted position and pays well.
KBAY Radio
Roaring across the Gulf. Turn it up to eleven and get ready to jam to the raddest tunes that the K by the BAY can dish out. KBAY plays the newest Rock and Pop of the day and is known for its flamboyant DJ's and bizarre contests. KBAY is the station just about everyone in Delta City has on their dial and being based in city, it also has the strongest signal. Late nights are popular, particularly on weekends when the "Gator-Man" takes over and the lines are WIDE OPEN. Call in, give your story about aliens or your ex-wife, maybe get on the air with the Gator.
KBAY shares the same building as WFLO television, but we don't associate with those squares...
WFLO TV
The home of hard-hitting local news at noon and six, featuring Chip Clydesdale and Darrah Daniels covering all the news you need to know from Delta and beyond the Bay. Go with the FLO- WFLO, every evening to keep up with your favorite programming. WFLO tower commands the airwaves in Delta City and is generally the channel that most people watch because the reception is best. Regular reruns of the the Cosby Show and the Andy Griffith Show are popular around the news slots, though the station is mostly known for taking itself a bit too seriously and its constant in-your-face advertising.
Harriet Beecher Stowe High School
The Stowe High School is named for a female author and abolitionist born in Connecticut but moved to Florida in 1870. She authored Uncle Tom’s Cabin as a means to draw empathy from Southerners to their African American brothers in bondage and to highlight the terrible living conditions in which these people existed. Her book, published in 1852 actually laid the groundwork for the Civil War and turned many northerners on the path of abolishing slavery in the United States.
Harriet Stowe claimed she was never treated in an uncivilized manner by any of the native Floridians. The students at HBSHS have taken to refer to themselves as Uncle Tom as slang; at least the young African American males who play on the Stowe Football team do. If a non-black student were to call them Uncle Tom, it would be considered a slur and taken as an offense.
The school is located between a quarter mile and a half mile from the downtown commercial district of Delta City. The curriculum is competitive with other Florida schools of its size, boasting a student population of roughly 1600 students. The Stowe HS football program is strong, winning two state titles in the past ten years. They generally beat their rival team about three out of every five games over the past twenty years. The head coach for the football program is Herbert Glenn who was a Running Back for the Miami Dolphins from 1970 – 1975. After retiring from the Oakland Raiders in 1978, Mr. Glenn returned to Florida, settling in Delta City and taking a position as a High School Football coach.
The school is a three-story rectangular shaped building with a full gymnasium in the rear. The basketball program is just as thriving as the football program. The HBSHS music program is considered just above average, but its Jazz band wins trophies in state competitions annually.

Food, Drink and Entertainment
Trader Jon's
Known far and wide by military and civilian alike, Trader Jon's is unlike any other bar in Florida or possibly even the world and is perhaps the most raucous joint in Delta City. Aside from it's slightly cluttered appearance, "TJ's" is one of the most popular bars in the city, if not THE most popular. Eccentric owner, proprietor and WW2 Army Ranger, Jack Martin, sets no prices on the drinks and instead takes "trades" based on his moods that he deems valuable enough outside of cash to be added to his extensive collection. Being next to NAS Delta, the walls and ceilings are adorned with Naval Aviation trinkets and other oddities so much to the point that he even gives guided tours during the day to mystified visitors. Getting in the door on weekends is an accomplishment in itself and the lively festivities are known to regularly spill out into the streets much to the the displeasure of DCPD and MP's alike.
Several celebrities have been spotted in the bar from time to time and Jack likes to brag that another whole group of well known faces have visited in disguise just to see the spectacle that is his bar on a hot weekend night.
Shogun Sushi
There are several Asian restaurants in Delta City, but like many in the restaurant business, they come and go as the seasons, however the best always survive thanks to good food, good prices and good people. SHOGUN was first opened in 1978 and is the oldest Asian restaurant in Delta City. Japanese immigrant and owner, Jiro Mifune was the first in the city to install a full sushi bar to serve up his edible arts with fresh ingredients. The restaurant has expanded in its ten years and Jiro has recruited expert staff to assist him with the growth.
Shogun is a Delta City favorite, not just because of the excellent food and atmosphere, Jiro has set the prices to be accessible for as many as possible as he enjoys sharing his life's passion. Come by and enjoy a bite in traditional styles or whatever flair you may desire. At this time Shogun has been awarded two Michelin stars.
Steel Mill Gym
This is where the work gets done. Iron and steel. Any machines you might find are chain driven and have a decent chance of removing your fingers if you're not careful. The Steel Mill prides itself on building powerhouse bodies. Will you shape up? Doubt it. If you can't put three plates on both sides for your bench, don't even bother. Indoor and outdoor equipment included. AC works only occasionally so get ready to sweat- and there's absolutely no music allowed.
Get at it.
Description
Florida Wilderness Reserve
A public and private partnership for the preservation of Florida's natural habitat, the FWR is free to the public and a very popular tourist attraction. Enjoy at your own risk! Other than a few man-made bridges and pathways, it is untouched landscape. Make sure to bring plenty of mosquito repellent.
Frankie's Ballroom Arcade is a classic establishment with roots dating back to the 1920s. It originated as a Soda Fountain under the general family name, Rossi. However, the appeal of the establishment came from the second floor being a secret speakeasy. This dual nature of the Rossi family establishment has been a staple ever since. It was renamed to Frankie's about 10 years ago by then owner Franklin "Frankie" Rossi, a controversial figure in Delta City rumored to be involved with organized crime. The Frankie's of 1988 bears very little resemblance to the soda fountain and speakeasy of old... or even the full fledged bowling alley and discotheques of a decade ago. It is currently under the ownership of former relief pitcher Tony Rossi.
The bottom floor of Frankie's is the Arcade, which also still has a few lanes of a bowling alley tucked into the back corner. It's a semi-popular hangout spot given the lax policy regarding underage smoking and rumors of a secret back room with banned gaming cabinets available to only the most trusted of regulars. It's seen better days in terms of business, but helps to generate extra revenue to make sure the business as a whole stays afloat. The Arcade closes by 7:45 on weeknights and 5 on weekends.
The top floor, however, is designated exclusively as a nightclub space. It's separated into two rooms: a bar and a dance hall. The latter has been renovated from serving as a discotheques and updated only slightly. While the bar is muted and dark to offer some semblance of privacy and class, the dance hall is vibrant and gaudy. An impressive lighting system, pastel cutouts of palm trees, and a shiny black and white floor design greet patrons when they enter the dance hall. Tony tries to keep the venue booked with local bands as much as possible, so that there's always an opportunity to dance or share a drink when it gets dark out. The nightclub opens at 8 on weeknights and 6 on weekends.
Residential & Commercial Areas
Pace Island
The most exclusive residential area in Delta City and typically the "second home to the second home" for celebrities and socialites looking to escape from the chaotic Miami scene and enjoy the gentle tides of the Gulf for a while in posh comfort and security. Named after early Spanish explorer Alejandro Pace, the Spanish themes carry strongly in the architecture around the island and even through the new construction. Soft pastels prevail and the latest sheek of the era are easy to spot. Property on the island is continually at a premium and making more than six-figures is only the first prerequisite.
Eastern Bay
Eastern Bay is classic inland Florida and majority working-class area. Most people here commute north to Industry East, work in small businesses on the east side of the city, or fish commercially. Because it is further inland, humidity is considerably higher here during the summer and standing water, even after several days without rain, is common. Sand and dirt roads are the norm off the main highways and people are generally of a happy, southern disposition along with the snakes and gators.
Gulf Breeze
Gulf Breeze, white picket fences, the two car garage on a long driveway, home office, his and hers sinks and the pool in the back garden. Popular among families and those who made enough to move to the suburbs from Eastern Bay.
The homes are larger, roads quieter and many leave for a shift in the office in a white shirt than work boots and overalls on the factory floors and deck plates of commercial fishing vessels. Schools are better, the gators always are a problem and the humidity. You thought you could escape the scaly swamp rats?
While more expensive than the homes around Eastern Bay, the property prices in Gulf Breeze are still affordable on average and while not as sought after as Seminole Shores, life is good among the city suburbs for those who make it so. Mom and pop family shops still are a regular occurrence with parking lots filled with new minivans and large 4x4’s that rarely see a dirt road.
Seminole Shores
Ah, Seminole Shores, the place everyone wants to be that unlike Pace Island, almost feels attainable if you put your mind to it. Some of the best schools in Florida are "in the shores" and typically most residents are well-off, retired or locally wealthy in various Delta businesses. Living here gives you easy access to downtown and the beach while still being exclusive. Gated communities are the norm and typically residents can be found casually cruising the meticulously cleaned streets in golf-carts or leisure cycles. Docks on the outer bank house swanky cruisers that families love to take out on the weekends.
Industry East
Industry East is the heart of Delta's industrial business sector is located with most of the prominent manufacturers, equipment dealers, contractors and the like. It has a heavy focus on import/exporting with the logistics of getting to port right next door making the costs manageable for even local businesses. Visiting this area usually means work. Freight trains run the tracks in all directions carrying raw and finished goods from across the southern US. Don’t be surprised to find a traffic jam as a load of containers comes from the port or a large piece of machinery is being loaded up for transport.
Landmarks & Tourism
Downtown Diamond
The "Double-D" as it's affectionately known is as posh, grandiose and over the top as the nickname implies. A layover is going to cost you considerably more than even the Ritz so it's not exactly a local stop, however the rooftop bar and restaurant (a feature of all Diamond Hotels) is very popular in spite of the drinks being a little steep. Sitting outside on the top level affords a spectacular city view all the way to the coast.
Island Diamond
The Island Diamond is the sister hotel to the downtown location located near Pace Island. Geared more towards leisure than the downtown location, it's equally swanky amenities are every bit as luxurious as downtown, though the clientele tends to be more vacation oriented rather than business. Delta City remains the only location in the world where two Diamond Hotels are within sight of each other. Enjoy the beach bar and be waited on as you lounge by the Gulf in your sunchair in the sand.
Diamond Stadium
Former StarBank Field purchased outright by hotel magnate, Marcus Knight and currently undergoing extensive renovations. The Stadium has principally served as home to Delta's wildly popular minor league baseball team, the Gulf Coast Corsairs. Public opinions of the acquisition are fairly mixed while many support the updating of the stadium, most residents are apprehensive about the team and property being subject to the whims of an international playboy. Marcus has however, kept his promise to make sure the field remains fully open during the Corsair's season and the vast improvements to the property have been well-received. The large, retracting, fabric awning has become a staple, visual feature of the city and provides a barrier against blistering sunlight during afternoon games.
Rumors abound about Marcus' true plans for such a large undertaking outside of the hotel industry, however the most popular rumor is his intention to negotiate an NFL franchise to Delta. Only time will tell...
Join the "Corsair Club" to show your support for the team with season tickets, preferred seating or a host of other amenities as well as try out the newly completed Treasure Island Tiki Bar at the next game.
Tropico Resort
A medium to large beach front resort hotel set on the gleaming sands and crystal clear waters. Boasting a range of rooms from standard to large suites with expansive views of the sea.
With a modern beach bar, multiple restaurants and an newly established spa, arcade and other amenities. The old hotel is new once more.
Recently modernized the hotel has retained its grandeur and large ball room that to its rather confused owner remains popular among guests as has the popular house Mariachi group who perform both informally and small intimate concerts and other events such as weddings and parties.
The regular candle lit musical evenings on beach have remained popular since the 50's and many a couple have met under the candle light.
Founded by Juan Rodriquez in 1948, small starts have grown large, now owned and run by second generation, his son Jackson "Jack" Rodriquez.
Delta City Times
The newspaper traces its origins to the East Pinebough Times, a weekly newspaper established in Waverly, Florida in the 1880s. The paper was published weekly in the back of a barbershop and had a circulation of 378. It subsequently changed ownership six times in seventeen years. In December 1884 it was bought by Floyd Timor who moved it to Sierra Harbor. In the 1890s it moved to Delta City, and later that decade was officially renamed the Delta City Times.
The Times became bi-weekly in the early 1900s and began publication six days a week several years later. Norman Poirot, a publisher originally from Illinois, bought the paper in the 1910s and converted to a seven-day paper, though it was rarely financially stable. Norman's son, Charles Poirot, became editor in the late 1930s and took majority control of the paper in the late 1940s, and set about improving the paper's finances and prestige. Charles Poirot controlled the paper until his death in the late 1970s, when he willed the majority of the stock to the non-profit Poirot Institute. In late 1986, the Morning Republican was merged into the Times. Poirot was succeeded as editor by William Clarendon, the current editor. In early 1988 the total circulation is listed at 253,198 subscribers.
Politically, the Times attempts to remain centrist or moderate in content, but staff writers are found on both ends of the political spectrum with authors writing stories both from the left and the right.
Resources and Notes
This section is just a short collection of links and thoughts that we think might be helpful and are not required viewing/reading. The point of the game is to embrace the era and have fun. In many ways the world was a better place during the time. Here's a few links to get you started and we'll add to this as we go:
NRW along with other youtube channels like The Prime Thanatos specialize in promoting artists and music that capture the 80's feel and sound, often using equipment from the era. You are welcome to use these in your posting.
http://www.liketotally80s.com/ A lot of information and links on this site across a wide variety of subjects. Just reading the stories is a curiosity.
To get the most out of the decade without too much influence from the 70's or the burgeoning 90's. We have chosen the current setting to be SUMMER, 1988- more details on that to follow in posting prompts.
@Pilatus Something in here is freezing my tablet up, but no worries,as much as i like the 80s ,I'm not a fan of anime-manga. Sorry, but all the best on your RP.
Managed to get it done tonight! Lemme know if there's anything wrong or in dire need of changing!

D E T A I L E D A P P E A R A N C E
Sidney, or Sid, is quite a lean-looking individual. He's not a skeleton by any means but he hasn't the thickest of builds. It bothers him very little, he's of a healthy weight and has the energy in him to go at his job for hours on end. The energetic side of him isn't reflected in the somewhat lazily kept blackish-brown hair upon his scalp. But at the very least, he isn't the type to look too scruffy, fashion and natural features in mind. On the contrary, his facial hair at least seems pretty well-trimmed.
On the topic of fashion, Sid has an affinity for very bland clothing. Plain drab button shirts, with a little single-colour jacket or the occasional coloured puffer vest, of which je promises it wasn't another Marty McFly-inspired sign of the times. No, he's quite adamant that he got there first. Other than that, his profession has never required anything more than presentable casual-wear. Sure, a tie for the occasional meeting with someone important, but a full-piece suit is a hard fit for his wardrobe. Occasionally, a more homely UK/European brand comes and goes on his apparel, but with the least-flashy clothes on the market, it can't exactly be that easy to tell the difference.

If there's one thing certain about Sidney, it's that opportunism pays the bigger bills. The odd vacancy and uncertain income has made for a reluctantly adventurous individual, who - in dire times - is willing to plunge his photographic skills into different industries. Stress is all but natural to the job, but he persists with an energetic press onwards through life. He wouldn't describe himself as competitive, but if it means getting a second chance to keep at what he does, then it's not an entirely incorrect perception of his on-site work ethic. Then again, he does at least try to keep his ego far at bay, not that there's too much of it to begin with in the professional scene.
And what is he like outside of the Delta City Times cutthroat hours on capturing the next headline in film? Well, it's quite relaxed. He enjoys the sort of quiet moments when he can, but he was never impartial to the lively scene of Delta's music limelight, or even the lesser known street motorsports that make light on the rarity. Always a spectator, though. To be a participant can sometimes require a nudge and pinch from the odd acquaintance or friend, but it's never like he regrets it too much - so long as no harm comes to himself. Then again, he can't help but feel a little disheartened by his occasional financial struggles. The cheap apartment and bikeless motorcycle license keeps him in that needless desire to try and succeed. And with that comes friends, making the right and wrong calls on the people around him. He's an outsider by blood, for sure, but to maintain connections is always a point of interest. The odd cheek and jabs of a friendly lad has given the wrong impression before, but at least with his faded accent he doesn't suffer from communication efforts, allowing for him to socialise comfortably with others.

Come the age of boredom, birth and infancy. Sidney Thomas Sharpe was raised in the town of Haddington, over the pond, off to the East of the much more recognisable Edinburgh. Was a quiet life, so to speak. A mum from Hertfordshire, southern-english bred, and a father from the very town itself - all things were as sweet and sound as they could be. For the first half, he was just a boy who took to the streets after school to avoid the odd detention from the headmaster, but it wasn't until his family was gifted a 1972 Olympus OM-1 camera that the budding personality was caught between white still frames. At first it was just a nice techy-addition to the Sharpe's, but when his mother grew less protective of it four years later, Sid found himself able to sneak off away to capture all the moments he could, until the film ran out of course. It was a great commodity for the local area, and on the rare months when he got more film, be it on a blizzardly Christmas morning or family gathering, he became far more interested in capturing the aesthetics of the world, rather than just battling his mates for the cheesiest pose.
Sid's passion had come into full fruition by the age of sixteen; the blossom of all things characterised. The liberation of an enthusiastic parent at least guided his passion onward, and he kept the camera going, even so far as to scrounge together change for repairs if it lost its way, until the lifespan ended with his rather expensive venture: and off he went, in 1980, to the Melbourne Photography Studies College, all the way on the other side of the globe. To his luck, the career professions of his parents were enough to see him escape the stone homes of his lovely town to the most blistering heats he'd ever known. And there he studied, furthering his desire to be a photographer in the brutal game of life. He never quite achieved top of his class, but in witnessing Australia's prime photographers achieve respected awards, he grew to understand the grandiose potential of riding the tide to success.
He ended his education pretty anti-climactically, but it soon picked up when a fellow classmate, Roger, asked if he wanted to take the plunge towards the states for the opportunities of a lifetime: freelance photography in the cities of lights, skyscrapers and business. And that very decision took him to the gates of Delta City, where the at the bottom-life began. They rented out a criminally cheap apartment, not to say it was of much quality, and made their days' earnings by offering their services to small companies, assisting in advertisement campaigns and on the one occasion, a single submission to the Delta City Times. Now, Roger eventually cut his losses after stringing himself up with the worse crowds available, and without so much of a word he hightailed it to another state, where whether he remained in country or not was a mystery. This left a now lonely Sidney to take on 1985 on his own, and though he suffered dearly, by 1986, he at least gave himself some security when he took on a job at the Delta City Times, one in which he was temporarily fired from until being rehired in 1987. It took him to the street races for photos on freelance duty, to the scenes of criminal aftermaths and before several celebrities, yet he felt the pressure of a high demand weigh him down. And without much of a trusting social circle, he set his eyes on a contingency plan should the Delta City Times drop him on another dime.

The Fly on the Wall: Time behind the camera can be a lonesome exercise. Sure you meet a lot of people, but he's never found the ones who stick around enough to become a part of his life, for better or for worse. At the least, he's a perceptive lad with a knack for artistic photographic detail. Maybe it's pretentious, yet he doesn't big himself up as being so.

He has almost light brown African colored skin with brown eyes and pencil thin mustache just above his lip. His oval shaped face is thin in the cheeks with prominent cheek bones. He keeps his African styled hair close cropped or faded on the sides with a flattop. PJ prefers to dress to impress. He wears a line of clothing one can purchase from Spiegel Catalog. Philip does not waste his time in video arcades and thinks that those who do, are wasting their lives, deteriorating their minds.
Zodiac Sign: Leo (August 14, 1960) Special Talent: Philip Javier has an eidetic memory, which serves him well as a reporter. Profession: PJ is employed as a reporter for the Delta City Times. Bio/Personality:This is more an autobiography of Philip Javier Mason…
I was born in Delta City on August 14, 1960. My mother arrived from Havana, Cuba in 1959 while Fidel was rising to power. She met my father, John Michael Mason shortly after arriving in Delta City. The big man was quite taken in by mi mama; she was a hottie Latina back in the day. They fell in love, mama got pregnant with me and they were married in early 1960. I was born six months later. I have a younger brother named Carlos Miguel who was born in December 1962.
When I was little, mi papa worked for the railroad. He was just a kid then. I think mom and dad were in their early 20s or maybe 18 when they met. In fact, mom was still with her mom when she arrived from Cuba; mi abuelita. Dad had a decent paying job working to maintain the tracks and track bed up and down the line. It was hard work and he was compensated well. We had a home in Eastern Bay, closer to the city than most. Our home was a modest brick made ranch style. I remember when I was young, mom and dad were happy and so were me and my little brother.
When I was eight years old, papa received a draft notice. The army was drafting older men too. Not sure how he got away with it earlier, but for some reason they wanted him when he was 31 years old. It was 1969 and the Vietnam War was in full swing. Dad went off to war. I never saw him again after that day he left for the Army and Vietnam.
Fortunately, the 12 years he worked for the Railroad and the insurance mom got from the Army were enough to pay off the house and for her to sock a tidy sum away for later. She got a job working in one of the factories in Industry East as a clerk. It was a decent paying job for a woman working in the early 1970s. At least enough for her to keep food on the table for all of us and clothing. Mom’s happiness dissipated after dad failed to come home in 1971. I heard her crying often when I was 10 and 11 years old. It made me and Carlos sad too.
When I was 14 years old, I entered the Harriet Beecher Stowe High School as a Freshman. I actually did well in school. Most of my friends appeared to either be truly stupid or simply dumbing it down in school. I don’t know if they just didn’t care or what their problem was. I kept my grades secret to them. I didn’t want them to know I averaged a 3.5 GPA the entire time I was at the Stowe school. I was not class valedictorian, but I ranked #28 in a class of 423 students.
I played football for the Stowe School. On offense, I was a running back, always quick on my feet. On defense I was an inside linebacker. I much preferred playing linebacker to offense. It was much more fun trying to sack the quarterback or tackling the running back coming through the line. I did however score six running touchdowns in my senior year.
Would you believe, I never learned exactly who Harriet Beecher Stowe was until I was 24 years old and in college? Unbelievable. I can only chalk that up to just a lack of paying attention to details when I was a kid. Those of us on the football team even referred to one another as Uncle Tom. I didn’t get it and never asked. I just went along with it.
Although I graduated near the top of my class from High School, I failed to apply for scholarship and mom could not afford to pay for me to go to school. I wanted to study Journalism. It was, excuse me, is my passion. I just love writing. But I owed it to my father to spend my time in the military. It was not that I wanted to die or get seriously injured, but maybe I could understand some of what he went through.
I enlisted in the US Army in August 1978, about a week after my 18th birthday. I went to Ft. Benning, GA where I trained to become an Infantryman. When I graduated Basic Training, I went right to Airborne school and learned to jump out of airplanes. That my friend, was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. I would do a civilian sky dive anyday. Once, I completed Airborne, I then attended Ranger School. That course was probably the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. You get no sleep and they feed you barely anything. I think I was 200 Lbs when I went into the army. By the time Basic, Airborne and Ranger schools were over, I weigh 170 lbs. I looked like an Ethiopian poster child, so emaciated.
Here I was a lean, mean fighting machine. Yea, stole that line from Bill Murray’s “Stripes”. Awesome movie! You’d think they would send me to an Airborne unit or to one of the three Ranger battalions. But no, they sent me to a Mechanized Infantry battalion in the 3rd Armor Division in West Germany. I learned how to break tracks and drink German beer. The Fraulines were pretty sweet too, if you catch my drift. When my time was up in Germany, I was a Specialist 4 and the army sent me to the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. I was happier with the 82nd and eventually was promoted to Sergeant. I completed 15 training jumps with the 82nd while at Ft. Bragg. My Platoon Sergeant was a pain in the ass at Bragg, but I learned to tolerate him. I never met anyone who knew my dad in Vietnam, even though there were plenty of Vietnam veterans in the Army when I was in. He served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. They are stationed on Hawaii.
When I left the Army, I had access to the GI Bill. It would allow me to go to college free of charge. Mom said I could stay at home with her while I was in college. Carlos told me she cried almost every day I was at Ft. Benning. I guess she was just happy to have me back home again. I even helped her around the house. I got a job working in a local grocery store while going to school. I still had money saved up from the Army and bought myself a 1976 Ford Torino white over blue with a 351 Windsor V8 engine. It looked a lot like the Starsky and Hutch car from the TV show. The car was dependable enough to get me to school, work and back home.
I attended the University of Florida at Delta City majoring in Journalism. I considered a minor in History, but decided against. Funny thing. You are supposed to have four years of a foreign language, but if you studied a language in High School, the college requirement is waived. Yes, I studied Spanish in High School. My mom and abuelita spoke Spanish with me at home. It was an easy A, my friend. I laugh about that one.
I graduated from the University in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and was hired a month later by the Times in downtown Delta City. I have been working as a junior reporter for the Times for the past three years. I ran into someone I went to High School with working for the same department I am.
Once I graduated college and got the job as a reporter, I was able to afford an apartment downtown, not far from Mandarin Park. Carlos moved in with me about six months after I got the lease. He is currently working as a firefighter at Delta City FD ladder 1. The apartment is not far from where he works either.
Life is good. I need to visit mom more often. I call her at least once a week, but it seems I don’t visit her and mi abuelita enough.

Recent History: For the past year, PJ has been researching a series of arson investigations in the greater Delta City area. There have been four buildings in Industry East and two downtown that were torched. It appears they were set intentionally by someone, possibly for the insurance money. The police have been investigating the crimes. Their tips and information have been minimal giving him only small drops here and there; enough to keep him coming back for more. The stories have been keeping him employed in the Times.
He has also been hanging out in some of the clubs downtown with his friends including that girl he works with who he graduated high school with. The clubs are really happening downtown. On occasion they venture into the Double-D to see the clientele and partake in the excitement.

Zodiac Sign: Leo
Special Talent: Particularly impressive baseball pitcher, but recently retired due to a persistent knee injury. He was known for being a Southpaw (left-handed).
Profession: Owner of Frankie's Ballroom Arcade, former relief pitcher for the Atlanta Braves
Bio/Personality:
Tony Rossi is competitive to his core, but has lost his ability to compete at the one thing he was good at. He was born into the Rossi family, an Italian family with rumors that have been circling their heads since the 20s. They have been a steady name in Delta City for decades, however, given their ability to adapt with the times. They owned one of the most popular speakeasies in Delta City in the 20s, and transitioned to a popular bar in the war era. The Rossi family once owned a theater that has since closed down, but most recently purchased the space for a multi-faceted entertainment venue called "Frankie's Ballroom Arcade."
None of this ever really mattered to Tony. From a young age he knew he was good at Baseball, and put everything he had into it. Tony's nature ever since he was a kid was to push himself to his very limits and try to be the best at whatever he deemed important. His family's unspecified amount of wealth and tenuous connections afforded Tony every opportunity. He attended HBS for one year before his parents rented him an apartment in Miami and enrolled him in a private school to ensure he was competing at the highest level in Florida. He ended up pitching for the Corsairs for two seasons before being traded and moving up to the Major League with the Atlanta Braves. He was one of the relief pitchers, and developed a very small following compared to some of the greats elsewhere in the league.
Tony enjoyed the lifestyle. He had a good time whether or not he had a game the following day, and usually spent his time in the bull pen sobering up to deliver a couple strikouts near the end of the game. He worked hard and played hard, and the strain of it all cost him severely. A knee injury was the death sentence for his baseball career, and cost him his contract with the Braves. Without an arena to compete in, Tony has dedicated himself to running Frankie's and keeping the establishment relevant in the late 1980s. That being said, Tony's "work hard and play hard" mentality hasn't died with his career. When 8pm rolls around, Tony is often seen mingling and enjoying the night with anyone else who enjoys the nightclub life.
Your character's favorite songs:
Recent History:
Tony's life changed drastically a little over a year ago. His knee injury near the end of the 1987 season ended his dreams of continuing his baseball career. He was still well off and had enough connections back in Delta City to purchase a smaller place in Seminole Shores. Most of the Rossi family has moved into Miami or up towards New Jersey. Among those who have made the preparations to move away was Tony's uncle, Franklin "Frankie" Rossi. Frankie was liquidating his assets quickly to move North, and was happy to talk Tony into purchasing the family business for cheap.
Tony has spent the last nine months rebranding Frankie's into an attraction for those involved in Delta City's nightlife. With help from his uncle, he managed to secure a liquor license and renovated the entire second floor into a nightclub that opened after 8pm. While this move has kept the establishment afloat, Tony has been having difficulty shaking off the festering image he's developed of himself as just another washed up athlete. Well, at least he wasn't coaching at HBS yet.

Special Talent: Persuasive. Stella is very well spoken and knows how to navigate her way through a conversation, be it simply to make the discourse flow, make an appeal, or otherwise just get her way. One could even say she is a good liar though Stella likes to think of it as just being verbally flexible and convincing.
Profession: Waitress at Shogun Sushi
Bio & Personality: Stella is best described as polite, witty, learned, and courteous though at times private and even outright distant. She was born in Tokyo on February of nineteen sixty-three to an American father and a Japanese mother, her father Roger was a veteran of the Second World War and nearly twice her mother’s age. Stella and her mother Sakai lived in poverty and when Stella was four her mother wrote to Roger who had moved back to America and was now living in Delta City, appealing that he help get Stella to the United States.
Stella’s father would help get both Stella and her mother to the United States though he refused to take them in and continue his relationship with Sakai as he had an American wife and children. Sakai spent the next twelve years working long hours at two different jobs to provide for herself and her daughter. When Stella was sixteen her mother died of a stroke from chronic stress and high blood pressure. Roger immediately after reached out to his estranged daughter and offered to let her stay with him and his wife to which the young Stella swallowed her pride and agreed. While Roger worked to accommodate and help his daughter his wife cared little for Stella who was after all a product of Roger’s infidelity while he was stationed in Japan. She made life miserable for Stella in every little way she could and she and her husband fought frequently over the next two years. At eighteen when Stella graduated high school her grades were too poor for scholarships to pay for college. Roger offered to help pay for Stella’s schooling despite the outrageous protests from Roger’s wife.
In nineteen eighty-one Stella left Delta City for the upper east coast where she would study at a liberal arts college. She made several friends and was introduced to rock music along the lines of AC/DC, Kiss, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin and also took a liking to The Beach Boys, a surf band. Marijuana and alcohol also a new aspect to her life and before long the young student began to slowly neglect her studies and instead became more interested in a fast life of partying. She also frequented rallies against government activity and meddling in foreign countries as well as various civil rights protests on campus as well as off.
In the spring of nineteen eighty-three Roger would die in a car accident at the age of fifty-eight, the autopsy report later saying his accident was caused by a heart attack while at the wheel. Stella returned home for the funeral, her father’s will leaving her little as most of his possessions and money went to his wife and their two sons. Depressed, disoriented, and dissatisfied with her waning performance at school Stella dropped out of college and moved into a small apartment back in Delta City leaving her unfinished studies behind. She would spend the next few years bouncing between jobs ranging from cafe waitress to clerk with her inheritance and leftover college money on the side keeping her afloat. All the while maintaining her interest in select literature and studies - and drug habits - on the side.
Despite the rough ride that life has been so far Stella has for the most part kept her spirit and maintained a healthy optimistic persona. While sometimes seemingly disconnected or even cold she is loyal to the few friends she has and reminds herself that she has the potential to make life better, even after her stumbles. Still her struggles do wear her down at times and she descends into alcohol and drug abuse in spurts as a last “therapeutic front”. This has often lead her to keeping questionable company in recent years. Paired with her persuasive persona Stella has also at times shown to be somewhat flirtatious though typically just as a last ditch attempt when her charisma come short of necessary outcome.
Your characters favorite song(s):
Recent History: As of two months ago Stella began working at Shogun Sushi as a waitress. The pay is decent enough that she can afford rent and other expenses though just barely, leaving little money for any sort of extra luxury or treat. She also recently ended a long term relationship with her now ex-boyfriend due to abuse both verbal and physical. Her drug usage hasn’t picked up in a while but that is mostly due to how tight her funds are at the moment.
In her spare time she has been taking to the gym, Mandarin Park, and the library when she can. For now she is simply trying to maintain a certain stability while Focusing on saving what little money she can for her future, whatever it may hold.

Special Talent: Painting. As a sickly adolescent Dorian often wandered around his family’s rundown estate in Chattanooga looking for something to pass the time, he often followed the elderly LaValle’s around the crumbling mansion listening to them ramble on about the supposed masterpieces that used to adorn the walls, presumably before the now yellowing peeling wallpaper, and how those aforementioned valuables were parted with to cover one of the numerous tragedies that befell the once great LaValle family since time immemorial.
As a naïve child Dorian vowed to restore the lost treasures to their rightful place, even if he had to recreate themselves. Dorian, it seemed was a natural painter and by referencing waterlogged art books in the decrepit family library he over time developed a knack for mimicking the style of history’s most accomplished masters. Painting brought him a sense of peace and accomplishment that he had never really felt before. Though his reproductions or even his original pieces never seemed to impress his relatives as painting as a profession was not suitable for one baring the LaValle name; art was something to be bought and displayed not made. Circumstances dictated that he unceremoniously leaves Tennessee around his eighteenth birthday, and he eventually headed to New York to attempt to break into the art world. He quickly found that outside of the grounds of the crumbling compound in Tennessee the LaValle name meant nothing, it surprisingly meant less than nothing if it was on one of his paintings. A few years after arriving and making no detectable impact on the art scene Dorian was the on the verge of being completely destitute, at his most desperate he was approached by gallery owner and smuggler Hanbal Awad who introduced the starving artist to the world of art-forgery. They became partners and sold his fakes to art galleries around the tri-state area claiming that the offerings were what remained from the LaValle family's once vast art collection; though eventually they resorted to selling under alliases.
Profession: Dorian allegedly works as a senior floor supervisor at “Insane Jane’s” a consumer electronic chain that has recently rose to prominence throughout the state due to an advertising blitz featuring the titular Insane Jane (played by Delta-City Comedian Darla Fields) hocking merchandise at crazy prices from her padded cell at the funny farm. However, his position is what is known in organized crime as a “no-show job” meaning that he draws a check primarily for tax purposes and to further tie him to his criminal benefactors; he has never actually worked at the store in question and the employees are unaware of his supposed postion. His illicit trade is that of art forgery.
Bio/Personality: Dorian is a damaged person, with a chip on his shoulder. His family’s yearning for the prestige of prior generations did nothing but wear him down both mentally and emotionally; whenever the last perfect LaValle was born, the proverbial mold was broke and all those that followed that prodigal offspring had just been failing to capture something that was unobtainable. Despite his rejection of the path laid out for him, Dorian still adopted the trademark pride and pomposity that was the last refuge of his kinsfolk. He cannot help carrying himself like royalty with an air of pretentiousness or acting like he owns everything and everyone in any room he happens to walk into; humility and humbleness were virtues that were never taught to him. He feels like he has something to prove to the world, by becoming successful he innately believes he can undue whatever wrongs were supposedly leveled against his family. He envisions himself as an insular being constantly at odds with his surroundings and this drives him to push those he truly cares about away. It is easy to justify working with criminal elements when since childhood, it was drilled into his head that others are tools to use to advance one’s own interests above all else. This also explains his inability to trust in others. Over the years he has become subservient to these vices and comforts that his illicit gains have allowed him to pursue thus far.

Recent History: Dorian migrated to Delta City in 1986 to escape mounting pressure in New York, as due to his association with Awad and allegations from duped customers he became a person of interest to the FBI field office there. Cutting ties with his former partner who fled back to his home country of Jordan in 1984, Dorian half-heartedly attempted to turn over a new leaf and live an honest life, but found he was addicted to the pampered lifestyle that his dwindling gains brought him and almost immediately returned to forging paintings to supplement his income. With Awad out of the picture, Dorian aligned himself with Delta's City's Silverback Syndicate to distribute his pieces and mask his involvement. However, continued dealings with the notorious gang has only futher entangled himself with their expanding interests.
