"DON'T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE!"
Current Location: Precinct #11

He did it.

He actually got a hit in!

The Timekeeper couldn't help the joyful cackle that slipped out of him, probably not helping prove the insult thrown at him otherwise. But it wouldn't be enough to render Betty out of the fight, even he knew that! The big fucking mecha and Justin would have to wait a bit longer, as much as he hated wasting time elsewhere. And if he was to pull off his next move, he'll have to stall just a little bit longer. Finn turned to the evasive, focused on avoiding both frog and blade so Eddy could prepare his attack. It was probably a bad idea to use his backup this early, but what else could he do with a bunch of frogs dogpiling onto him?

Luckily, normal contact didn't cause them to explode.

Unluckily, this meant he was at risk of ending up worse than what Betty delt with. Maybe he could just grab the frogs and chuck them at her, but his hands were full. He could take a stupidly risky move and take her down with him, but that was another can of worms entirely. The boy was counting down the seconds in his head. Once he reached one, he aimed the puppet at Betty, and from his maw a beam was fired. Instead of hurting her outright, a larger, more eldritch plush version of Eddy appeared, with teeth and claws as sharp as their swords. And it was more than happy to have found a new "playmate".

"Disarm her! We need her alive!" The Timekeeper called out to the summoned creature, pocketing the now-fatigued Eddy. The souls of the frogs didn't go unnoticed.

As long as Stay Puff isn't dealt with, every death will only make his soul count grow. I'll have to be careful not to overdo-

As if he asked for a demonstration, Finn could only watch from afar as Breacher was crushed by the arms of the makeshift mecha. "BREACHER!!" Worser still, Silhouette and Leroux were under fire by Pac-A-Fist, and Orion and the Freelancer haven't even layed a dent on Justin! God these guys were so annoying! Assuming Betty would be busy with "Big Ed" for a while, the boy hurried to reach Ashley and Marrie as quick as someone weighted down by frogs could go.

If they can kill Justin, that'll give them significant leverage in this fight, lice be damned.

Even as her shots continued to slowly erode Justin’s blood barrier, a not inconsiderable number of frogs threatened to erode Ashley’s clothing and skin as they leapt upon her. One even landed on her cheek, but while uncomfortable, the Knight of Tomorrow knew she couldn’t take her attention away from the vampire, not even for a moment. Events transpiring across the street only accentuated that fact, as Justin charged towards Gale, only for the bluenette to cast twin whirlwind melodies, one on the vampire, and the other on herself. As crimson globs spun around the pair and dozens of frogs were hurled against the blood barrier, their caustic detonations dissolving it further, Ashley’s eyes widened in alarm as Justin grabbed Gale and flung the bluenette towards her. Knowing that a collision at that speed would likely detonate every frog on her body, the Knight of Tomorrow nimbly dodged to the side. Such a maneuver would still cause her to step on, and subsequently detonate, at least a few of the explosive frogs hopping around the roof, but even if their corrosive innards managed to penetrate her outfit’s defenses, any pain it might generate would be as nothing compared to the heartrending sight that greeted her when she looked towards her fellow agents…

“BREACHER!!!” Ashley screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks and mixing with the crimson torrent that already coated her body.

The sound of a hellish screech accompanied the cataclysmic collision of two cars, with the draconic agent directly between them. Even with all the shield-bearing esper’s defensive abilities, the odds of her surviving such a brutal attack were slim to none, something the subsequent spray of blood from between the two mashed vehicles grimly attested to…

“S-She… She had a daughter…” Ashley whispered, before whirling to face Justin, an almost inhuman snarl emerging from deep within her anguished throat. “YOU BASTARD!!!” she howled at the vampire, her voice filled with utter fury. She had detested him before, but now her hatred had reached new, terrifying pinnacles. She wanted, needed him to die, needed him to suffer, and she would ensure he would, or die in the attempt. Her fury gave her focus, her will inexorably fixed upon the goal of ending Justin’s wretched existence. Thus, even as the vampire conjured tendrils of blood with which to ensnare them and a torrent of lice began falling from the sky, the Knight of Tomorrow set about accomplishing that task with all the impressive speed her esper form afforded her.

Reaching up to gently pluck the frog off her left cheek, she hurled the small creature at the approaching crimson tendrils, hoping its corrosive detonation would buy her the time she needed to complete this first stage of her renewed assault. Less than a second later, she raised her techno-wand and fired a beam of neon green destruction directly at the center of Justin’s chest, followed by an even stronger bolt. Without his blood barrier to protect him, the first shot should strike true, and even if it was absorbed by whatever other defenses or natural toughness the vampire might possess, the second attack, striking so soon after the first, should pass through those now-weakened defenses and cause considerably more harm…

Marrie Knight

As she flew threw the air towards Orion, Marrie only had one thought. Thank god for the Holy Diver. As Orion dodged out of the way, leaving Marrie to land on the explosive frogs, she was already preparing a new melody combination. With a renewed Storm melody to raise her Sentinel and protect her from the lice, she cast a Flight note on herself as well, hovering above the frogs on the ground. She watched Orion fire a beam at Justin, and prepared for his reaction, flying towards him at a speed just barely slower than that of Orion's beam melody. As soon as it hit or missed, she was on him, circling around the tendrils of blood and slamming into his chest. She angled her ascent so that he had his back towards the sky and went as high as she could. The lice would cover the bastard and hopefully suck away his blood ammunition, so all she had to do was stab him in the chest as she reached her apex.

Then the real fight could start.

Jacqueline Leroux

Interaction: Samuel @FamishedPants

Jacqueline took cover under Breacher’s construction alongside Silhouette. Gunther showed up briefly, but there wasn’t much she could do to take the opportunity of him being exposed. There were too many obstacles in the way, there wasn’t enough time, and…

She could only watch on helplessly as Breacher was targeted, and crushed between two floating cars. Su! she called, body tensing to move. But it was too late. Her coworker…her friend…dead. Just when I start to care…

Of course, the fucking vampire was gloating. But he’d get what’s coming for him – first up was the goddamn ghost, though.

When Pac-a-Fist summoned a construct behind her and Silhouette, she just scoffed. It took but a moment to target it with a melody. If that didn’t work – well, she did still have that Molotov she could throw at it and watch it burn. Whichever way, once the summon was taken care of, she thought about how to get at the ghost.

Since the damn poltergeist was back to being in hiding, it’d be best to sneak to it, and ambush it. Which wasn’t really her thing. But it was Silhoutte’s. “Hey,” she said to him quietly but intently. “Look, I’ll go do what I’m good at – a loud frontal charge. You go the other way around, get behind that fucking ghost, and kill it. Good?”

She didn’t wait long for a reply. She ran back out of the cover, past where Su had been killed. With the aid of her esper form’s excellent fitness, and using Havoc where she had to, she began to clim up the ‘robot’ shaped pile of cars. She'd get to Pac upfront, and make herself impossible to ignore while at it.

"Oh wow, thanks, Broken. Your post turned me racist."

— Sam

How strange it is, this silence.

Despite the remaining members of G.E.M.I.N.I and Justin's group fighting as hard as ever, all Samuel could hear was the rain. Not the frogs, not the Space Invaders ship positioning to flank them, nor anything else. Just the cursed blood rain.

”I think we’re evened up now, aren’t we?“ Justin closed his eyes with a grin. ”You thought you could fight me without consequence? Think again! You’ll all join Gunther’s spectral army soon enough!“

Until Justin spoke.

Samuel couldn't see the vampire from his position, yet somehow his voice was perfectly audible over everything else. Smug, satisfied, and determined to inflict the same kind of ending upon everyone of them. His delight seemed so genuine and yet his actions were so abhorrent, that Samuel almost couldn't believe what he was seeing.

She was a mother! And... a friend...

How could he want any of this? He realized these were actual people with lives, wants, and children, and family, didn't he? So why, then, did he do all of this? It didn't even seem like he had a goal beyond the carnage and suffering? Could this being simply be incapable of compassion, of humanity?

But of course. That's why they called it 'humanity', after all. It was not for monsters. For all of their boasting, it seemed they simply weren't up to the task of compassion. It was beyond them as beings, even when gifted with the intellect to acknowledge it.

How pathetic, Samuel had thought. Even when given everything, they still failed at something humans could do with ease nowadays, even if it didn't seem that way online or through the lens of media. His grandmother, rough as she was, was a testament to this fact.

Maybe, then, it was pointless the waste compassion on them. If all they were capable of was destruction and suffering, then maybe allowing them to exist in any capacity wasn't a good idea. Perhaps any exceptions were merely biding their time, waiting for a chance to sin.

A thought Samuel had long before this. But now it had become a belief.

In a way, this was a relief. Aside from his music, Samuel couldn't say he had ever felt this passionate about something. Existing for the sake of it, just doing whatever he could to get by and trying to look as presentable as he could while doing it... wasn't a dream or an aspiration. It was merely an excuse to live.

But now he had real purpose.

He was going to get rid of monsters where he could. To make things right with the world with what power he had, in what ways he could. And perhaps this goal was fueled by disgust and contempt, but he would use these feelings for the sake of compassion. Or so he reasoned.

And that would all start with Justin!

“Hey,” she said to him quietly but intently.

"...yes?" Silhouette was pulled back into the more local situation by Jacqueline, and matched her volume. For the first time, there was no smile on his Esper form.

“Look, I’ll go do what I’m good at – a loud frontal charge. You go the other way around, get behind that fucking ghost, and kill it. Good?”

That was right. They were currently engaged in combat with the ghost and the nerd. Justin would have to wait.

Samuel agreed, and then, taking notice of the ship flying around their back, he quickly spoke. "Don't forget that ship behind you while you charge. I will work as quick as possible."

With the frogs, the mech, and the ship behind her, Jacqueline wasn't likely to last particularly long, or at least Samuel decided to work with that assumption. They had relied too much on Breacher, and look what had happened. They needed to be more proactive in the fight, that much was sure. A battle of attrition would spell failure for them, and failure meant death and worse.

Silhouette didn't keep a lingering gaze on the area he wanted to reposition to from behind cover, doing what he could to lessen the risk of their enemies catching on. Waiting for Jacqueline to begin her charge, he quickly popped up from cover and fired a bolt of dark energy towards the mech, before retreating back to cover immediately, lowering his profile as best he could.

The bolt's path would cause it to fly relatively close by the car-mech's arm. Combined with how quickly he peeked and fired it off, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume this was simply a missed note, and Samuel didn't bother to wait and see if it had hit were he wanted exactly, trusting his aim to nail a chunk of glass behind the mech, closer to the edge that had come from the mech being hit by Jacqueline just moments earlier.

His actions from that point would, of course, depend on whether or not his aim was true and if his spell even activated, but he wasn't liable to give the ghost any more time than it needed to notice him.

With everything becoming so horrible, some might say that Pax Septimus had sunk into hell. But one street fit that description far better than any other.

The ruinous meteor flew to the balconies like a bat out of hell. A white tail of light followed her just like her namesake. The most powerful espers had unusual abilities and Regina was no exception. Every time she used a melody everything in her vicinity caught fire. This was relative to the strength of the melodies she was using, and the ones she was using were quite strong. The snipers popped and sizzled as everything around the comet burned. The heat caused the brick walls to explode as the moisture escaped them. Even the downpour of blood could not quelch Regina’s flames. It was going to smell like burning flesh with just the snipers burning but, now, even the bloody rain was catching fire.

Regina’s melodies were a mixed blessing for the espers on the ground. They were no longer being shot at, but now they had to do everything in their power to survive their friend’s flames. Trial by fire. Survive the burn, survive the encounter. That was likely Regina’s thinking, if she thought about anything more than burning up her prey.

Mary opened a portal into a nearby warehouse so that some might escape the flames. But the warehouse was filling up with frogs and lice. So who could really say it was any more safe in there than out here? It wasn’t like the Diver was going to stop attacking as soon as they retreated. Thousands of lives depended on the espers. What few espers that used Mary’s portal only did so to look for something that might shield them from the flames or sniper fire. They had to keep moving.

But regardless of what happened, Big Tony would not stop his assault. Elroy managed to block one of his punches, only to be sent end over end towards his allies. His immortal body could not burn, could not be eroded by acid, but that punch might have split him in two if it weren’t for his shield. Tony was set ablaze, but the fire did little to harm him. He belted out a war cry and his fellow weretigers did so in return. They would have their revenge today. For every one of their brothers that fell, they would take five espers. That was what Tony’s warcry led them to believe.

With the fight developing around Justin the way it was, Finn decided that a change of tactics was in order. Betty’s swing narrowly missed Finn as “Big Ed” clamped around Betty’s torso and carried her through the air.

”Get back here you coward!“ She called out as she was carried out of the way.

Betty had been momentarily dealt with, but the frogs were still all over the place. Now was not the time for careful navigation and Finn couldn't help but step on a few of the corrosive frogs. Though their entrails have been burning through the roof, Finn would fare better. He could feel the acid starting to eat away at his shoes, but pressed on to rejoin the others.

But what of the approaching lice?

The lice themselves did little to affect Finn. But he was covered in frogs that would explode if punctured or hit hard enough. As the lice raced up his legs, the frogs started to pop. His legs, his torso, the frogs were detonating left and right. The lower half of his body was searing with pain and the frogs were still exploding. Standing was agony, but he could manage. Oil seeped out of his legs where the clockwork boy’s wounds were worst.

With a roar, Betty drove the hilt of her sword into big Ed’s head. This was enough to daze the creature. When Betty landed on the ground, she rolled under it with her blade extended and cut the massive plush in two. Both halves bled purple glitter and fell to either side. By the time Betty stood back up, Big Ed’s body had disappeared in the downpour of blood. Betty pointed in Finn’s direction and fired a beam. It flew past Finn’s leg and hit the floor several feet in front of him. This caused Betty’s body to turn into a bunch of black specs and float through the air, only to reform at their new location. She had chosen to place herself between Finn and the rest of his allies.

”Fight me you gremlin!“ With a roar, she charged towards Finn. The blade on her sword slid down in front of her handle which made her weapon look like a bearded ax. She held the Ax behind her back and had her arm outstretched for the boy. Despite his best efforts, he wouldn’t be ridding himself of Betty that easily.

But would they rid themselves of Justin?

Ashley managed to pull a frog off of her face and chucked it at one of the bloody tendrils. It detonated and burned through a few of the tentacles, but it was just delaying the inevitable. As long as Justin was alive the falling crimson would continue to be a problem. But Ashley was going to take care of this with her next few shots.

She led with her wand’s techno projectile. With a wave of Justin’s hand, the ball of blood moved between him and the trajectory of the shot. The follow up shot managed to bypass the ball of tendrils by virtue of a beam and projectile having different flight trajectories. It shattered the wind barrier and slammed into Justin’s coat. It singed a hole over his chest, but his skin had not been penetrated.

The approaching lice wasted no time racing up the stationary girl’s legs. The frogs started to detonate one after the other. She might have been in the same condition as Finn if her resistance to such attacks wasn’t so high. This was by no means a painless experience. While she managed to avoid having her skin burned through, the various frog detonations were leaving purple bruises all over her body. The reformed ball of tentacles managed to latch onto Ashley’s wand arm and tugged her towards the edge.

”May her daughter learn from her mistakes, then.“

But Justin didn’t have much time to smug about that. Marrie had coasted through the air and managed to avoid getting hit by a single frog, or even the ground. Though it wasn’t as if her approach was stealthy, just well timed. He knew Marrie was coming, he just didn’t have much time to react. There wasn’t much he could do.

But he could open his eyes.

At which point Marrie was able to feel what had taken Pac-A-Fist and Su by such surprise. It was more than just the shock of seeing two empty eye sockets looking back at her. It felt like her body was rebelling against her. She froze up, and it was just her momentum that carried her towards her target. When they collided, Justin flew backwards with her. With his gaze upon her she was unable to carry him into the sky like she originally intended. He slammed into the apartment building and they both fell a few feet onto the balcony. Justin didn’t look like he had been phased.

”You want to dance again? Fine.

Marrie’s knife managed to sink just deep enough into the hole in his clothes to cut his flesh, but it didn’t get past his rib cage. He had taken hold of her wrist before it could go any deeper. He gripped her shoulder with one hand and held out her knife-wielding hand like they were going to start dancing on the balcony. Only he was trying to crush her wrist. Something she was just barely able to put up with due to her ability to resist monster attacks. But it was getting harder to hold the knife as the seconds ticked by.

”We could have worked together, you know? Actually…“ He slid his hand from one of her shoulders to the other. ”Why don’t I just rip your arm off? Then you won’t have a choice.“ With a sharp tug, Justin managed to dislocate her shoulder. He didn’t take his eyes off of Marrie for a second, but he was keeping her body between himself and the other espers. Though as difficult as it was for Marrie to move, she could twitch her limbs a bit, and casting melodies was still possible. That was one thing this monster couldn’t do.

But Justin and Betty weren’t the only problems to deal with. Every passing second, Handsome Gunther was getting more powerful. If they kept killing things he would be unstoppable. But Jacqueline and Samuel had something most of the other espers lacked.

A plan.

Not an overly sophisticated one, but in just a few words Jacqueline was able to get on the same page as Sam, who obliged. But the star ship had to be taken care of.

First Jacqueline charged up a powerful melody to put the ship in its place. It did manage to get a few shots off, but it was quickly silenced by a torrent of stones. The melody was designed to break up magics rather than hurt them directly, and it seemed to work here. The ship popped into a spray of pixels before vanishing in the rain. Afterwards, she sprinted for the mech that was making its way closer to their position. She didn’t have to run far to confront the thing. Havoc immediately came down on one of the mech’s feet before Jacqueline went ice climbing up the side of the monstrosity.

The monstrosity was just an illusion of course. While it was easy to view as a giant body, the truth was that every single car that made it up could be freely moved anywhere. Just a bunch of possessed vehicles pretending to be a whole. Once Jacqueline started to climb, everything floated higher in the air. The torso, the dumpster right above it, the ground was starting to look pretty far away. Meanwhile, the sports car Pac was “driving” floated off the body and turned around to give her a clear shot at the climbing esper.

And then… buzzing.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.

[...] And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.

— Exodus 8:16–28

Hundreds of thousands of flies came flying in. Most were small but a fair few of them were much, much larger than normal. Like Oros had said, they were attracted to areas of great death, and the rooftop was a prime candidate for that. Though they seemed especially interested in Finn and Ashley, who were covered in frog cuts. One fly was even trying to pry apart the cars where Su’s body had been trapped. Who knew what was happening elsewhere. Did regular humans have the means to dispose of such large insects?

Meanwhile, hundreds of souls gathered around Gunther and flew off in every direction.

”What an amazing time to exist!” Gunther watched as Jacqueline hung overhead. The scene was so rich with dark emotions and there were only a few people here. He’d already collected a few hundred souls and would gain thousands more once they started to deal with the lice and flies. They were already soaring into other buildings and deeper into the police station to see what sort of objects they could control. He was starting to see what Arzendale was talking about. It was one thing to just make people suffer, but to cause that suffering yourself? Sublime! A few of the espers would direct their hate at Lord Justin, but ultimately it had been his own arcane might that overwhelmed her. It looked like that pick wielding esper was going to bite it pretty soon. And the other one was still in hiding. Likely too scared to do anything. But just to be sure…

Gunther launched one of the cars into Samuel’s hiding spot.

There we go. Gunther’s balloon-like lips curled into a smile. Now his soul should fly out of that heap of rubble any second now.

Weird, there was no soul. It was a little hard to see, but surely he’d be trying to help the pick girl if he was alive right?

"The situation has only been made worse with the addition of yet more bugs."

— Sam

Circumstances as they were, Silhouette found himself dreading the next second as much as he had been anticipating it. He was furious, but even still... with Su dead, how could he simply assume things would work out?

He couldn't.

In reality, his spell was probably airborne no longer than a couple of seconds or so. But to him, it had felt like hours since he had ducked back behind his cover. In it, he imagined his failure:

Jacquiline rushing headfirst into battle while under the impression she had someone to rely on, only to die in despair when his lack of talent shone through in the most critical moment, cursing him in her final moments. The only consolation he had was being lucky enough to die before he heard how his failure would eventually affect the others.

But fate(or was it luck?) had something else in store for them. At the very least, their ends wouldn't be so anti-climactic. His spell successful, Silhouette's surroundings shifted as he and the debris swapped places, and almost immediately after, Gunther tossed a few tons of metal towards where Silhouette had just been.

While he had hoped Gunther would mistake his bolt for a missed attack, he certainly couldn't have predicted his Transplace would save his life. Yeah, it had to be luck. Incredible luck, even. Some people consider such luck to even be a skill. Sil wasn't one of them, sadly...

Still, there's a saying about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Though the flies were impossible to miss, none of the larger ones had landed close enough for Silhouette to worry about. At least yet. Besides, by this point in the fight, what were a few more bugs? He couldn't exactly avoid them anyway, and Jacquiline's situation was only getting worse by the millisecond, so he had something far more important to worry about at the moment.

Gunther wasn't looking at him.

I won't fail anyone else!

Silhouette left any and all doubt at the place he had been mere moments before as it would only hinder him. He held the grip of his sword as hard as his hand would allow him and exploded into action just as soon as he had been able to reorient. Silhouette looked like a rough stroke of crimson paint on a canvas as he moved in for the kill, his form completely drenched in blood, and with a melody-empowered stroke of his sword, he intended to separate Gunther's nebulous form into equal halves, then quarters, then eighths, then hundredths.

"Y'know, if you weren't currently mind-whammied by a maidenless prick, I would've found your persistence charming."
Current Location: Precinct #11

The quickly dubbed Big Ed only lasted so long. It's merry mood was literally cut short by a stab into the head, and a clean cut through the middle. Was it not enough, even with the enhancing notes added to make it stronger? Whatever the case was, it gave Finn a short moment's respite. Whatever frogs haven't been detonated by the falling lice, he had to carefully yet quickly maneuver around. A few slips ups here and there and he could feel the acidic bile eat away at his boots. Nothing too severe yet, he could still move.

That is, until the lice decided to climb onto him too.

The frogs that covered his lower body steadly detonated. A pained yelp escaped the Timekeeper's throat. He stumbled, yet he could still move. It hurt like hell, his legs bled amber where the frog guts corroded into his endoskeleton, but he could still move. Gotta heal, NOW. Even if it was costly to waste mana on himself it'd be too risky to attack in a weakened state. Thus he took the opportunity to atleast deal with his leg wounds. And not a moment too soon. The boy flinced as as a beam flew past his legs to in front of him, and his eyes widened once Betty appeared from it as a result, blocking the way to his allies.

Blink note?? BLINK NOTE?? WHAT?!?

So this was how it had to be, huh? He was stuck having to deal with this psychotic blackguard, puppet to a festering blight upon the bloodied Earth, while the rest struggle to deal with Justin himself and those other pains in the ass. And Breacher- No, Su, became nothing more than another addition to Stay Puff's soul collective.

Must he be selfish at a time like this?

Must he be misfortunate at a time like this?

...Not quite misfortunate. He was still alive. He was still fighting. Betty might've been the stronger one between the two, but if he's managed to last this long!

"You asked for it!"

Finn didn't stop running towards Betty. In fact, he was breaking into a full sprint, readying his weapon to skewer her through the abdomen whilst his free arm aimed to block her's. No doubt she was aiming to disarm him. Even without a speedster note he's naturally faster. And if this didn't work? Well...

Tackling Betty off the roof wouldn't kill her, would it?

...

Man these insects were annoying. The flies were too, but still.

As it transpired, Ashley’s plan worked, up to a point. The point in question being how far through Justin’s defenses her twin attacks would penetrate. Instead of grievously wounding the vampire, they hadn’t even managed to scratch his skin. However, they did succeed in providing an opening for Gale to strike through, one which the bluenette took full advantage of, racing through the air to plunge her dagger into Justin’s chest. Unfortunately, Ashley wouldn’t witness the results of this strike. She had far more immediate concerns to deal with…

“Gaah!” the high-tech heroine cried as the various frogs clinging to her body detonated one after another. While her outfit’s defenses prevented her from being seriously injured, it still hurt like hell. It was only the mixture of hatred, fury, and raw adrenaline surging through her body that kept her focused. This was quite fortunate, seeing that Justin’s blood tendrils were even now wrapping themselves around her forearm and seeking to pull her off the roof…

“I don’t think so!” the Knight of Tomorrow snarled as she activated her contingency for just this situation.

From out of a hidden chamber on her ultratech gauntlet shot a glowing buzzsaw, which rapidly grew in size and began swiftly circling the high-tech heroine. With luck, it would slice through the crimson tendrils ensnaring her as well as the swarms of flies now descending from the storm-wracked skies above (or at least the largest of their number). In the small reprieve this would hopefully grant, Ashley would see that Justin now held Gale in his clutches. The coward had positioned her so as to shield him from further attack, but that wasn’t all. Gale also appeared to be paralyzed. As an agent of G.E.M.I.N.I., the Knight of Tomorrow had access to a wealth of information concerning various types of monsters, and in her studies she had discovered that vampires were known to possess the ability to transfix opponents, rendering them utterly helpless.

Well, we’ll just see about that…

Once again, glowing particles of neon green energy coalesced between the prongs of Ashley’s techno-wand, the gleaming sphere set between them shining with ever-increasing brilliance as yet more power was added to the nascent melody. As soon as it had reached it’s full potential, the high-tech heroine fired the ensuing beam at her blue-haired ally. She only hoped it would be strong enough to free the young woman from Justin’s sinister enchantment…

Marrie Knight

Marrie felt her arm pop out of its socket and clenched her jaw as tightly as she could. She'd only get one shot at her plan, and she had to make sure it worked. Not knowing that Orion was casting a melody at her and Justin, she could only think of one thing to do. Her Instrument was pointing straight up, and she couldn't move it due to Justin's eyes. So she tried something. She fired a projectile straight into the air, and soon a cloud of magic formed about seventy-five feet above them. Soon magical projectiles fell down, and these projectiles bounced around, each creating a portal where they landed. It was going to be an interesting few seconds.

Jacqueline Leroux

Jacqueline knew very well that Gunther would start moving the cars as soon as she jumped onto the first one. Even though she was expecting it, dealing with the sudden ascent was no easy task. She was barely able to lodge Havoc’s spike end into the car, and just clung to it. Once it more or less stabilized, she looked around. She was higher up, and Pac’s sports car was opposite her, where Pac had a very clear shot at her.

Heh. Think you’ve got me where you want, huh?

Of course, that was not incorrect. But while the poltergeist and the brainwashed esper thought she’d be easy pickings, she could take advantage.

Though first, she did have to do something about that whole hanging off the side of the car just by her Instrument’s handle. She tightened her grip, and wriggled her body left and right until she got some sideways motion going on, then swung over and on top of the car, dislodging Havoc from where it’d been stuck as she did so. She was breathing heavily, perspiring to the point that she could feel small rivulets of sweat running down her face and back. She was still exposed to Pac’s ranged weapon, Gunther could still move the car she was on to shake her off it…

But it was quick and simple to create the melody she had in mind. All she did was send a very small metallic sphere at Pac’s sport car, aiming at its hood. She could only hope it’d be unnoticed while she was crouched there, presenting an ever so appealing target.

If and once her melody landed on the sport’s car, Jacqueline would suddenly appear there. Wasting no time, she’d charge through the broken front window and at Pac. A knee to the face, more if she had to; once the opponent was dazed, Jacqueline would grapple her. If Gunther remained live long enough to try and crush them while they were in the car, she’d have to ensure to throw them both right out to avoid meeting a fate similar to Breacher’s. And if he died, well, they’d soon be falling down anyhow, car and all. Either way, she’d keep her hold on Pac tight, bracing for impact. If this stunt didn’t kill her outright, she might also have to use that crystal Lada had made her…

Lightning fell like rain, the stench of ozone so thick as to suffocate, while chunks of buildings punctuated the steady downpour with sundering might. Here, and only here, the plague craft of the Holy Diver could not manifest, the sheer force of arcane invocation enough to vaporize all the vermin that the Behemoth called before they could even fully manifest. The bells of hell clamored in their dissonant glory, the Dawnraiser wielding its calamitous instruments again and again, as if to scar its very existence into the eyes of all that claimed the city as their home.

And within that madness, there existed but a single shadow that still held on, surviving the onslaught.

And then there was her lab assistant, supporting her from on top of the convoy.

”This one’s tough.“

Veronica had pressed ahead, which left Binky to defend the caravan until she could usurp Dawnraiser from their path ahead. Not hard for the nigh-immortal doctor Dinky, but only for the moment. With six different instruments to call her own, there was little the beast’s spells could do to her. The problem for Binky was never getting hit by an opponent's attacks. It was finding an opening to give a battle a decisive end. But in the current situation all she could do was buy Veronica enough time to get to the behemoth herself. The bright flashes of lightning cast long shadows. She would be upon Dawnraiser shortly.

”Fall back! Let’s see if it chases us.“

Thirty seconds was a generous estimate of Binky’s duration in the esper state. It usually ended sooner if she decided to use melodies, which she absolutely had to do to preserve the convoy. She had made herself a watch so that she could monitor how much time she had left in the esper state. It even appropriately accounted for time lost due to her spell slinging. A quick glimpse at the clock revealed she didn’t have much time left.

“Tick tock indeed, Binky.”

A voice sounded, unfamiliar but seeping with playful malice. A silhouette, a mere silhouette against flashes of lightning and gouts of flame, looked down upon her with two glowing eyes. Operator ‘Blackout’, well-known for being a ‘true’ swordsmaster even a decade ago, now a terrorist working side by side with what she once slew.

But her eyes would have no effect on the Raid Boss Esper, and her appearance was mistimed; Binky still had enough seconds left to take down a mid-tier esper.

That was, until the driver spun the wheel and slammed the car head-first into a stone wall.

She’ll survive, of course. An Esper with six Instruments had plenty of options to defend themselves with. But time, measured in seconds?

“Tick, tock.”

It was quite short, indeed.

Betty had done nothing this entire encounter but chase Finn. Her endless rage prevented her from giving up on her pursuit, and no amount of heckling would get Finn to change his mind it seemed. She had been burned, bitten, but wasn’t out. Her opponent might have fared better in that regard. While he was subjected to a few frog detonations himself, he took a moment to heal up some of the damage.

But he could only run for so long.

She was almost taken back by Finn’s sudden choice to charge. But she wasn’t going to stop. As angry as Betty might have been, her technique was on point. Finn likely knew this.

As they drew closer, Betty’s hand was in range of Finn’s rapier. She brushed it to the side before swinging her ax over her head. There was nowhere for Finn to hide, but he had already set his course before the charge even began. He was able to reach past her blade and stop her arm. But Finn wasn’t stopping. He continued to move forward. Betty and Finn may have been equals in speed, and Betty’s weapon was heavier than Finn’s, but that weight was helping him when he collided with the violinist. But Finn wasn’t aiming for a stumble, he aimed for a fall. There was little Betty could do to correct her balance. She only had one hand on her weapon. The other was on Finn’s shoulder. They would fall together.

But they didn’t.

The same black swarm that accompanied all of Betty’s melodies was swarming around her body, suspending her in the air. Whatever her element was, it was based on wind magic. She floated away from the edge of the building. The corner of her lip crooked up into a smirk as she released Finn. He might have fallen to his death if he didn’t have a free hand to grab onto her ankle with. She placed both of her hands on her sword and prepared to swing.

”This is it!“

Meanwhile, it rained blood. But Ashley was getting absolutely showered in it.

Binky’s buzzsaw orbited her, cutting through the bloody tendrils with every pass. It didn’t destroy the mass of blood but it did free Ashley for the moment. She was able to step away from the bloody tendrils and fire off her melody without a hitch. But it was getting more difficult to assist from her position. The bloody abomination only grew with each passing second, and was nearly the target of Ashley’s melody.

But her spell did get through.

That was all she could do for the moment. She fired at the mass of blood while moving to a better vantage point. If it was just the blood tendrils she would have been fine, but now the flies were attacking en masse.

Before Ashley’s melody could land, Marrie tried to free herself with a melody of her own. Normally a rain melody would be plenty obvious to monsters and esper alike, but not in a storm of blood, frogs, and flies. She was able to get around the usual limitations of the portal note by having the projectile bounce several times, creating a few portals.

If Marrie wanted chaos, she had invited it.

Blood and frogs no longer rained from the sky, they came out of the ground too. The lice from earlier were still on the prowl, and the emerging frogs detonated with a single bite. White entrails slapped against Marrie’s back with some of it falling on Justin. It burned, but Marrie, like Ashley, was resistant to the attack. The only issue was that Justin seemed to resist it as well.

”How droll.“

By luck or planning, a handful of frog guts were flung into Justin’s face. He flinched for an instant, and that paired with Justin’s weakening influence on her allowed Marrie to move. She grabbed her arm and kicked off the vampire before her arm was totally torn off. She could still hold her instrument, but she was unable to move her shoulder. But she was free, if only for the moment.

How did Samuel know what Gunther was thinking? I don’t even think I narrated his reaction to the projectile.

Samuel lied in wait. He could have attacked immediately but he had transpaced himself. Casting a melody immediately after the last one was not an option. Even with the blood obscuring the distant fighting, he could see this fight unfolding around him.

Finn and Betty’s duet in the air..

Ashley’s dance with the tendrils and flies.

Marrie’s waltz with Justin.

Jacqueline and Pac-A-Fist performance overhead..

The only person without a dance partner was Gunther. Samuel could tell what was going through his head. He was going to smash the cars together, Pac-A-Fist’s life be damned. He was a monster after all. He might have been following Justin’s orders.. Maybe he was just like Samuel in that he could follow his employer’s will without question, but the difference was that he was a monster choosing to serve a monster. Human suffering put him at ease. No, it sustained him.

Samuel’s melody was primed. He was ready to strike.

Gunther was starting to look around. Where had Samuel’s soul gone? He couldn’t sense it anywhere.

”Unless…”

Gunther whipped around and swung his hand in Samuel’s direction. His eyes expanded as the arcane knife cut into the ectoplasm that made up Gunther’s body. It was like cutting into a burlap sack filled with clay. The poltergeist opened his mouth. His last words were a high pitched shriek as his unlife came to an end. Just as Samuel’s knife reached the pit of Gunther’s neck, an explosion of arcane energy severed his head and arms from his torso. His body sunk to the ground like a playdough structure, but the sky was filled with stolen souls rushing off to join their ancestors in the afterlife.

Maybe Su was among them.

Pac-A-Fist’s sports car was on a collision course with Jacqueline before she blinked over to her. She went to knee Pac in the face, but she countered by firing a round directly into her knee. Despite the eccentric nature of Pac’s laser gun, it had to be physical because it bored a hole right through flesh and bone. Jacqueline wouldn’t be walking on that until it got healed, but she didn’t need to take another step to get a hold of Pac-A-Fist. She fell into the driver’s seat, where she was able to drive the butt of Havoc into her chest. From there, she could punch and elbow Pac with impunity. The steering wheel prevented her from kneeing Jacqueline, and the one hand she had left was secured on her gun. She managed to get hold of Pac’s wrists just as the vehicle was starting to fall out of the sky.

”Are you serious!?”

Without the ability to stand, Jacqueline wasn’t able to get Pac out of the car. They fell swiftly, and landed with quite the crash. Jacqueline’s body was thrown lengthwise across the seats while Pac was still sitting in them. Everyone outside would see the pile of cars spring around after the fall. nobody knew how far they fell, but it was sure to hurt. Jacqueline was the first to open her eyes. The only reason why she might have survived was because of the suspension on the vehicles. Rather than coming to a hard stop on the concrete, the vehicle’s suspension systems gave the vehicles just enough spring to cushion their falls. Jacqueline was going to be sore for a while, but she’d survive this. She’d survived worse.

The only indication she had that Pac was still alive was that a cluster of pixels coated her body in a sort of 8-bit medieval armor. Her intent was not clear, but it would be shortly.

This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them back, the hand of the Lord will bring a terrible plague on your livestock in the field—on your horses and donkeys and camels and on your cattle and sheep and goats.
— Exodus 9:1–3

And in this day and age, he’d probably fry Egypt’s infrastructure with a few well placed lightning bolts.

And what was more attractive to a lightning bolt than a pile of cars on top of the police building?

There was no warning. A pillar of light coursed through the cars and shocked everyone inside and kicked off all the street lights. This gave Jacqueline muscle paralysis and did further damage to her already sore body. Pac had anticipated the Diver’s next move and prepared accordingly with a magical shield. Pac shoved Jacqueline off of herself and dove out of the car. She jumped onto one of the large exhaust vents and started firing at Ashley. In addition to this, the giant flies were homing in on her. Meanwhile, the ball of bloody tendrils were only getting bigger, and it now seemed interested in devouring Jacqueline. It latched onto the sports car and pulled it closer to the edge of the police station. Its flailing whip-like appendages ripped the door of the vehicle and mulched the frame as it was drawn into itself.

Marrie’s dance partner also seemed to have vanished. As soon as the bolt of lightning landed, Justin switched targets. With a scream, he dove across the street and slammed into Samuel. He managed to roll to his feet some distance away from the others, but Justin had rebuilt part of his blood barrier and placed it between himself and the shadowy esper.

”You’ll pay for what you’ve done, and you will pay dearly..“ The barrier of blood grew spikes. ”Do you have any idea how much that statue cost? It was carved by italian sculptures right in Rome!“

With a wave of his hand, the barrier flowed forward like a tide of blood, and it was growing.

But something else had joined everyone on the rooftop. It was hard to tell with the bolt of lightning, but a teal blur darted across the roof and hid under the wrecked cars Gunther had tried to crush Samuel with.

All this excitement, and the Diver had only cast half of its plagues. Would they have time to stop the diver before it unleashes the rest?

"Ack, almost forgot the banner quote!"
Current Location: Precinct #11

With both of them struggling against the other, trying to keep their weapons from severing or skewing, Finn was forced to resort to his other option. Gritting his teeth, the Timekeeper kept moving. Perhaps he wasn't as faster than Betty than he first assumed, but she had the heavier weapon. He could use that to his advantage. They were so close, he just had to brace for impact!

...And yet, they never fell. They flew.

As it turns out, his earlier speculation about her element being Nature based was wrong as well. Wind magic. Good to know if he wasn't being separated further from his allies. The boy's eyes shot open wide once he caught on to her ill intentions. The brainwashed esper released her grip on him, and with a frightened yelp, he instinctively grabbed her by the ankle. "ARE YOU INSANE?!" Finn snapped at her, half out of fear and half out of sheer disbelief. At this height, both of them would fall to their death if her melody ran out. Was Betty really that determined to kill him?

...

Perhaps a part of her was trying to protect him, in some twisted way. A part that Justin's brainwashing hadn't affected. Would explain why he was her sole focus in this fight. But that would be wishful thinking.

Or perhaps she really did hate him. In her eyes, he might as well have left her for dead. But did either of them know better, back then?

Ah, he probably deserved this.

After all, who said Finnegan Vanhorn was a good person? But he still wanted to live, damnit! Selfish reasons or not, he can't just die, and Betty won't either!

With his focus mainly on the blackguard he could only listen to what was happening with the rest of the fight and imagine. "Could 'ya hurry it up back there?! I'm being dangled in the- OH CHRIST!!" Seeing as there was no other alternative available to him that wouldn't result in either of them plummeting to their deaths, there was only one thing Finn could do as Betty prepared to strike.

He released his grip on her, and fell.

However, Once he fell halfway towards the street, the Timekeeper casted a melody on himself; slowing down to where he could gently land on his feet.

"Well aren't you a sore cheater?! If you wanna fight me soooo badly, you're gonna have to do it back on ground level, Sweetie!" He taunted Betty, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

And for the love of god, that bastard needs to die already!

The fifth spell was in effect. They were half way through the Diver's curses. Lighting. Lightning was something he could handle! But was it that hard to kill? Surely others would be fighting this thing. They still had time, they just needed to hold out a bit longer...

Thankfully, Ashley’s melody succeeded in both finding its target and apparently freeing her from the vampire’s insidious mystic grasp. However, the Knight of Tomorrow wouldn’t have long at all to celebrate this minor victory. While Binky’s buzzsaw was keeping the blood tendrils at bay, the crimson sphere they emanated from was growing larger by the second, to the point that it was now almost completely blocking her view of the far side of the street. Something would have to be done about this, but before any action could be taken, a loud crash announced the collapse of Gunther’s “car-mecha”. Turning her attention to the site of impact, Ashley saw Leroux inside one of the cars, entangled with Pac, mere moments before an almighty thunderbolt fell from the heavens to smite the already battered vehicle.

“Leroux!” Ashley gasped, fearing that she had lost yet another teammate mere seconds after the first.

Miraculously, the armored agent and her brainwashed passenger both appeared to have survived the lightning strike, but Pac was clearly in better shape. Pushing Leroux off her, the arcade game themed esper jumped out of the wrecked car and fired a series of energy bolts at Ashley. Lowering herself down to one knee in an effort to avoid becoming the target of any future lightning strikes, the high-tech heroine raised her energy shield to block the incoming fire, while snapping off a blast from her techno-wand at the blood tendrils, which had now redirected their attention to the car Leroux was still trapped inside. As a further defense against the myriad threats assailing her, the Knight of Tomorrow also employed a melody to sheath herself in a neon green energy barrier.

As all this was taking place, Justin had abandoned Gale for a target on the far side of the pile of wrecked vehicles. By a quick process of elimination, Ashley realized his new opponent had to be Silhouette, but that knowledge paled before the fact that Justin was now within reach…

“Gale!” Ashley called to the bluenette. “Get Leroux out of that car!”

The high-tech heroine knew that with an enchanted buzzsaw orbiting around her she would be unable to make such a rescue attempt herself, and she did not wish to directly engage a brainwashed victim like Pac. Instead, she would carefully make her way towards Justin’s position. With luck, she could take the vampire unawares amidst the chaos of battle. Then she would teach him the true meaning of suffering…

Marrie Knight

"I don't know who that is!" Marrie shouted back as she cast a flight melody. She didn't care about the lightning, she rushed over to the fallen cars and saw both an unrecognized esper, likely this 'Leroux,' and Pac-a-Fist. She didn't have time for this. Since the other esper seemed to be awake, Marrie gave her a flight melody as well and grabbed Pac, lifting her out of the car and out to... well, not safety. Doing so with one arm was difficult, but possible. She'd just have to be careful. She wrapped her Instrument's chain around her as quickly as she could, one-handed, for better leverage as she pulled Pac under the nearest roof or overhang.

Jacqueline Leroux

Distantly, Jacqueline Gunther’s shriek of demise, and knew Silhouette had been successful. Hell yes! There was no time to celebrate however, because next thing she knew, her knee got shot through. The pain wiped her mind clean of everything but Pac, to whom she turned on with a frenzied focus. All else fell by the wayside; her whole reality was the pain pulsating in sync with her heartbeat, her rage-filled strikes falling upon the enemy.

That continued for what to her felt undeterminably long. In actuality, gravity was swift in asserting its influence. The car met the floor with tremendous force, and her body was flung aside, slamming into the car’s door as she landed across the seats. She lost consciousness for a few seconds without realizing it, and opened her eyes with a groan. Her leg was still shot, and her whole body had more aches than she could bear thinking about. She blinked blearily as she tried to get her bearings. Pac was…shielding herself?

She didn’t get a chance to do more than notice that fact. The very next thing, electricity coursed through her body. Her muscles locked in, nerves flaring and overwhelmed, and she couldn’t even scream properly. When it was over, Jacqueline was drenched in sweat, panting, teared up. And she was just so goddamn tired. She had to fight tooth and nail merely so she didn’t black out again.

Justin’s tentacles snapped one door right off its hinges, which was her cue to dash. Or, well, blink, considering she wasn’t about to physically move anywhere. Before she could, however, the unknown esper who’d attempted to ambush the vampire flew in. Twintails then tagged her with a melody, grabbed Pac, and got out before Jacqueline could even consider saying ‘thank you’.

Jacqueline found herself floating as well, which was surprisingly…not weird. Not questioning it, she directed herself out of the car, and away from the tentacles. Now, she wasn’t precisely on the verge of death (though it sure as hell felt like it), but there was still Justin, the Diver…Plenty of remaining hostiles to fight against. With one leg useless, she wouldn’t be able to do much in melee; a disadvantage she could do without. So, she quite quickly made the decision to use that Lifeblood Crystal right there and there, in midair.

While her backup did its work, she continued floating towards Silhouette’s last known location. It hadn’t entirely escaped her notice that Justin had gone there. She made sure to stick close to the ground, or to the cars. Once she was on the edge of the car pile, she saw the situation. The vampire was facing her coworker, and seemed to be open from behind. Jacqueline crouched down, readied a melody, and fired it off at his back.

"If you had just waited one extra second for me to--... ah, no use expecting some dumb vampire to understand comedic timing!"

— Sam

The plan was a success, and Gunther hadn't even been able to voice his final thoughts, whatever they were, before being destroyed. I actually don't know what that strikethrough is referring to. Many souls fled his empty form to what Samuel hoped to be a peaceful afterlife, and yet he remained unsatisfied with this outcome. Gunther suffered too little and Su was a bit too dead for his liking. Maybe if he would stop forgetting there's a sizable cooldown after using melodies, things would turn out better.

This doesn't make things even, but it is a start.

Having removed one of the larger threats they were facing, it seemed somewhat plausible they could get the remaining G.E.M.I.N.I agents through this mess without another casualty. Of course, it wouldn't be easy and things could take a sharp turn for the worse at any moment, but it did seem possible, at least.

To do that, Samuel intended to regroup with Jacqueline and subdue Pac-A-Fist before helping the rest of the agents with their respective foes. Wiping some blood out of his eyes, he started to make his way back toward Jacqueline.

Agent Leroux should be commended for her initiative and bravery. I hope she made it through that without any serious injur---

*CRACK*

Suddenly, a fairly loud and familiar sound assaulted his eardrums. His ears began to ring a little bit, but he wasn't given much time to worry about that as an abrupt impact threw him off his feet. He managed to recover in a timely manner, but now he was face-to-face with danger.

Justin...! Damnit, I didn't want to interact with him directly until the rest of his allies were subdued!

The arrogant vampire stood some feet away from Samuel, though he seemed far more vexed than smug, for the moment. A barrier made of blood separated the two of them, and it became even more threatening later when Justin added spikes to it.

He's mad about... the statue? Not even a word about the 'ally' he just lost? What kind of idiot would willingly cooperate with someone like that?

Samuel struggled to keep his composure, and each second he had to spend in this situation only made it harder.

"...I'll pay? For that gaudy sculpture of yours?" Samuel scoffed in an attempt to rile the vampire up, keeping an eye out for the areas the frogs had made hazardous nearby. "The mere implication that that atrocity was sculpted willingly is, frankly, so absurd I could almost forget to be offended by the equally ridiculous belief I would fall for such a blatant lie."

With less than half a tank of magical fuel remaining, Silhouette was certainly playing with fire here. He realized this later than he would have liked, though.

Wait... what am I doing? I need to seriously calm down...

It was one thing to have passion. But it was another to blindly make rash decisions under the influence of a heated mind. As cathartic as it may be to grind Justin's gears, without a plan it ultimately achieved little more than possibly getting Samuel killed that much faster. And he would likely die rather quick if he did nothing while the spiked wall of blood surged forth.

He gripped his blade with all of his strength, and a dark haze started to coil around Justin's feet. Meanwhile, Samuel started a diagonal retreat towards the top side of the ventilation unit behind him, instead of running straight backward, for whatever it was worth. At the present, he was far too focused on Justin to register the recently arrived blur, Jacqueline, or Ashley, and thought himself to be the sole person currently engaged to Justin.

The Tom and Jerry skit continued to play out between Betty and Finn.

Releasing Betty and allowing his time magic to slow his fall did prevent him from being cleaved in half. He even had time to force a smile and boldly throw a taunt at his reasonably angry pursuer. But while Finn had been concerned with Betty’s initial attack and falling to his death, he hadn’t put much forethought into what Betty’s next move would be. With a roar of hatred, she descended.

Slow was a versatile note, but didn’t give Finn nearly the same level of air control that Betty had. She could fly, accelerate and decelerate with just a thought. It would not take long for Finn to fall to the ground, but Betty could still catch up. He was powerless to do more than block the incoming swing with his rapier, and was flung into the wall of the police station as a result. The slow melody did help him resist the damage, but Betty’s assault wasn’t over.

She approached Finn with her ax slung over her shoulder. With a howl, her body was covered in black debris. Finn had been falling too fast before, but now the giant flies buzzed overhead and would be touching down any second.

”Nowhere to run, coward!“

A wall to his back, flies at his sides, Betty’s at his front, and noise all around. Betty howled as she brandished her weapon for a decisive blow.

Binky’s melody contained a pierce note that allowed for multiple cuts, but after each cut the saw degraded before finally wedging itself in one of the bloody tentacles. Ashley had just enough time to put up a barrier before more attacks came in. A shield melody would protect her, but not for long. The protection a shield note provided was dependent not only on the power of the attacks, but also the number of them. A single shot from Pac’s gun was all it took to rupture her spell. She could dispatch some of the flies with her wand, block a few more with her shield, but it wouldn’t stop everything. A fly landed on her back and dumped acid onto her shoulders. It felt like she had caught fire, but at least the frog guts were being burned away.

Ashley’s call to action did get Pac to turn her attention to the other espers. But between the flies, tentacles, and blood, it was impossible for Pac to see Marrie, let alone shoot her. Marrie had no difficulty passing a flight melody onto Leroux before flying up to Pac. But Marrie’s flight path brought her into Pac’s line of sight. She managed to fire a single round, which burned a hole in Marrie’s torso. But this didn’t stop her from trying to wrap up Pac in a chain. Her efforts were likely helped by the fact that Pac-A-Fist was pretty banged up at this point. She had just fallen a pretty far distance, and while everything was working her mobility wasn’t quite what it was. As soon as Marrie got the chain looped under her shoulders, she was off again.

”Are the lot of you mad?”

There were no places with an overhang aside from the apartment complex that Marrie had just flown away from.

Pac wasn’t going to wait that long.

With a growl, she twisted her body and fell out of the chains, only to summon a giant pixel starship just as she was falling. Marrie would need to take evasive maneuvers if she wanted to avoid the ships gunfire or being attacked by the still-growing amalgamation of bloody tentacles.

With Justin’s cronies out of the way, would the other espers be able to defeat him?

Samuel voiced his opinion about the statue. It caused the vampire’s fingers to curl into fists. ”You’ve spoken enough.“

The wall of blood opened up a hole just big enough for Justin to see Samuel run away. He may have had his back to Justin, but it didn’t matter. Once he opened his eyes, Samuel’s legs locked up. He wasn’t running anywhere, not straight or at an angle. Behind him, the wall of spikes started to crease in the center and fold like a hinge. It was no longer a wall of spikes, but an iron maiden made of blood.

The mana sapping melody went off under Justin’s feet just as planned. Monsters were an oddity when it came to depleting their mana reserves. Their internal mana sustained them while their magic was often pulled out of the surrounding environment. Hitting them with a mana burning melody was more likely to make them hungry or tired. Mavericks often employed such spells to weaken a monster without killing it, but it wasn’t uncommon for GEMINI espers to burn up a monster's mana to weaken them. But it wouldn’t stop Justin.

Enter Jacqueline’s melody.

While the blood magic went to work on her knee, a stream of metal tore through the air and struck Justin’s back. Each sliver of steel ripped away a small bit of Justin’s outfit, then his flesh, and even his bones. The vampire gurgled as his own blood mixed with the rain.

Justin broke eye contact with Samuel, and he was able to resume running just as the blood maiden attempted to close in on his body. The only thing it managed to do was clamp down on his scarf, pinning him nearby. The wall was not done though. While it had narrowly missed its target, it was still folding, drawing Samuel inward as it turned inside out in a second attempt to smash Samuel between its spiked walls.

Once the last bit of shrapnel fell it became possible to assess what happened to Jsutin. Part of his torso had been blown off along with his left arm. Even his neck and lower jaw were missing. Though not everything had been blown away. All of his blood vessels and organs had been left intact. His heart was still beating, and his lungs expanded and collapsed like they should. Only there was no flesh around them.

Justin whipped around and looked at Jacqueline, causing her body to freeze up much like Samuel’s had. While she was still in flight, she was unable to actually fly anywhere. The blood rain started to gather behind her and pushed the agent closer and closer to Justin. The vampire raised his arm, which was presently nothing but several large blood vessels. But with each passing second, a claw of blood grew at the end of it. In a matter of seconds, it was large enough to crush Jacqueline’s torso.

And then everyone’s skin started to itch.

Then the lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils will break out on men and animals throughout the land."
— Exodus 9:8–9

Then the boils started popping up.

Festering pockets of bile built up under everyone’s skin. Uncomfortable on their own, and sure to affect the speed in which one could cast melodies. That said nothing of the agony they would bring if punctured.

"Why did that not kill him?"
Current Location: Precinct #11

Perhaps he shouldn't have taunted her like that. Then again, he did technically ask for it. There was less of a risk fighting back down on the road than to stay in the air. But it seems his luck was slowly running out. Of course Betty would fly after Finn. With his previous melody still in effect, he could only block the incoming swing, letting himself be flung into the side of the building. Luckily slowing himself down kept his spine from cracking, or whatever the outcome would be otherwise. But this turned out even worse.

With the flies catching up to him, and Betty remaining relentless as ever, the Timekeeper found himself cornered.

"Hah...hahah..." The last time he was cornered like this was against a Behemoth. And yet, somehow, this was worse. Pay no mind to the fact that if he didn't let himself get cornered last time, he could've prevented this.

...Could he?

He didn't know anymore.

Finn's hopes of getting through this in time to stop the Diver were dwindling. He didn't even feel livid anymore.

Honestly, fuck this.

God it was so noisy. But this wasn't the time to cover his ears and hope this was all just some vivid nightmare. The only thing he can do, as his sole adversary charged in for a decisive blow, was the only thing he can do last time he was cornered. Fight through.

This'll be costly.

The Timekeeper weaved a complicated set of notes to deal with all the enemies that circled him. Lightning surged throughout his body, and the area around him for the moment became a lethal electric conductor. Despite being an AoE melody, Finn hadn't harm himself in the progress. Instead, it only made him faster. He surged forward towards Betty, primed to strike as much as she was. It was up to chance whether or not he succeeds.

...

Oh yeah. The sixth melody was boils. Eh, he'll heal himself later.

Even with all the various defensive measures Ashley had in place, the foes arrayed against her were far too numerous to completely repel. The Knight of Tomorrow ground her teeth in annoyance as her anti-gravity buzzsaw became embedded in, and subsequently engulfed by, the increasingly growing mass of blood tendrils, even as a shot from Pac’s laser pistol shattered the protective aura around her body. A swarm of buzzing flies was also assailing her from every angle, and despite her efforts to blast, block, or bat them aside, it was inevitable that one would eventually reach her body. Landing on her back, it disgorged a stream of acid onto her shoulder. Ashley hissed in pain as the corrosive spray ate into her flesh, but even as anguished tears streamed down her bloody cheeks, the high-tech heroine remained fiercely fixated on her goal…

A moment later, a swift blur of motion gave evidence of Leroux’s rescue, and its continued path toward Pac meant that the gamer girl would have significantly more pressing concerns to deal with than taking shots at Ashley. Thus, the Knight of Tomorrow joined her rescued teammate in her attack upon Justin. However, while the armored agent took the literal high ground, Ashley would come at their foe from a decidedly lower path. Moving to take cover behind one of the wrecked cars, the high-tech heroine finally caught sight of vampire once more. Even through the crimson downpour, she could see that his body had been utterly ravaged, and Ashley only hoped his injuries felt as painful as they looked…

And you’re going to be feeling a lot worse, you fucking monster…

Justin’s attention was fixed on Leroux, while his blood barrier remained focused on Samuel. Ashley herself had yet to be seen… Her skin had begun to itch from the rapidly spreading boils, but the young agent didn’t care. Her foe was in her sights, and that was all that mattered. Her pain only sharpened her focus, only accentuated her desire to see Justin experience even greater agony. From her place of concealment, the Knight of Tomorrow crouched down, braced herself against the car for added stability, and fired off two orbs of neon green annihilation in quick succession. The first came via a melody. The second, more powerful, bolt originated directly from her techno-wand itself. Both were aimed at the vampire’s now-exposed heart…
