"Daichi-Aniue and my sister in law, Mizuho-sama... I write to you once again, praying that my words may reach you in the place of honor upon which you reside, looking over all in the Mitsumine household"

"Twelve winters have come and gone since the day of our parting, a date that to this day is a matter of great grief. Your departure from this world was the most tragic event of my entire life... and surely, if not for the gift you left behind, my heart would have been torn, my soul lost its path and my life forfeit"

"Ryuunosuke is well, I'm pleased to write. To dedicate these years to caring and raising the boy has been as much an honor as it was a joy. In his steps, his actions, his kind manner and figure I see the reflection of both of his parents and such a sight I am brought reassurance and peace in a time of turmoil and worry. I have no regrets... I have done my best to protect him, to raise him and to see to his happiness. It shall never make for what he has lost... and seeing the person he has become under such a clumsy tutor as myself, I cannot but wonder the heights the boy would have reached had you two been here to do a better job I'll ever be able to do"

"This winter was cold... but short. During its long nights, my nephew has turned eighteen years old... and no longer can I delay what is already true. It was never my place to rule the Mitsumine Clan and now that he is clearly a man, it is his right and responsability to lead our people to their future. I tried to postpone it... despite his brightness, I still remember his tiny hand, barely able to wrap around my pinky as you held him Mizuho-sama. I remember his first steps, his first tears, his first words. To think that Ryuunosuke must now stand front and center into the very world that took you two away shakes me to the core with a fear that I can hardly fight. This land was dangerous when you left it, beloved brother, esteemed sister... and I'm afraid that it has only grown darker and filled with more peril. Nobles wage their battles, on the field and their palaces, with swords and intrigue. Dark things move in the cover of shadows and evil things seem to move about our mortal world. I wish for nothing more than to forever keep this precious gift secure and under my vigil..."

"However, I gave my word... and with the passes opening up as the snow melts, as the trees fill with flowers and a new year is born... as spring comes, the last of my delays has been met. I promised him... this spring, when he is a man for everyone to see, he shall come into his inheritance and become ruler of the Mitsumine. I doubt him not for a moment... I'm sure they shall make you as proud as I am. Of course, I shall remain at his side as long as they will have me... and at his shadow, should the time come when he can't stand the presence of this old man"

"For this I swear to you both, brother, sister, upon the graves and names of all our ancestors, on the love I have for you and your child. For as long as I draw breath, for as long as my blade doesn't rust, for as long as these bones and muscle hold me together, as I draw breath and my heart beats... I shall protect the precious life that was entrusted to my care. No matter what man, what army, what dark horror or God tries to bring harm to him, this blade and this body shall not stand idle. None shall pass through me for as long as I live to hurt this child that I love"

"This I, Mitsumine Takeshi, swear to you, brother, sister"
Welcome to the Mitsumine Clan RP and thank you very much for your interest in reading so far. This RP will be set on an original setting of culture and customs similar to Ancient Japan. The RP follows the heir of the Mitsumine Clan, coming into his inheritance and slowly bringing the clan to new heights... or new lows.

Aside from the heir, played by Heyitsjiwon, the rest of the players will also have the chance to play a variety of important characters. Loyal servants, retainers, minor lords under the Mitsumine, childhood friends, samurai of the Mitsumine, ninja killers of the clan, priests and priestesses of the Gods, youkai spirits from the unseen supernatural world and more are some of possibilities for characters in this game. While the heir marks the pace of the RP, the player characters in kind guide, protect and move the heir to their different ideals. Siblings of the heir are a possibility.

As GM I shall be playing primarily Mitsumine Takeshi, the heir's uncle and guardian but I shall also play a variety of NPCs and move events based on the decisions made. Expect plenty of time skips as decisions are made and then we move forward to their consequence. The time in this RP will be handled a bit strangely... as time will be necessary for some decisions to bear fruit, the passage of time may become a little abstract as we fast forward some events to keep things interesting.

Here I shall include some further worldbuilding that was discussed in the Interest Thread.

And now, let me present you with the character sheet.

Can we get a quick rundown of the Mitsumine heir so we can design our characters around him/her?

If The Blue Sylph, doesn't mind then I can copy and paste my application or at least the parts that would be pretty well known by most people.

Edit: Also, could we get a map? I'm a pretty visual person. I don't need extreme details, but I just need something to look at to fully understand the geography.

Here was my application that generally describes my character. Also, in case you missed my edit, could we get a basic map of the nation?

Ryuunosuke, 隆之介. Kanji for Noble forerunner/herald. Ryuu can be used as a shortened form.

Since a young age, Ryuunosuke has been fascinated with reading. Whether a book was about military theory or poetry, he would read it with enthusiasm. As such, many would describe Ryuunosuke as a scholar. Another thing that is of interest about Ryuu's youth is that he was very trusting of people, and thus often mingled with the villagers with little regard for status. Currently, Ryuu people describe him as a friendly, talkative and lively character who treats everyone well, even complete strangers.

Every new year, he gave out alms to the poor, and tried to house pilgrims who were travelling to various shrines and temples. In terms of religion, Ryuu is not extremely spiritual, but he does respect the Ayakashi and Yōkai. He does offer donations, tributes and prayers during celebrations and the new years, but beyond that he respectfully stays away from the supernatural unless the supernatural approach him or if the situation forces him to interact with them. In terms of physical capabilities, Ryuu is fit. For years, he has practiced Koryū and horseriding. However, rather than learning in order to be able to fight, Ryuu learned to understand the art of war better and what soldiers have to go through. Still, he is definitely able to protect himself, but he has never been in real combat.

Overall, Ryuu is known to be kind-hearted person, which can be a weakness. However, this kindness can also be a strength as well because it gathers him the respect from others and the love of his loyal vassals and people. He is also not experienced with the supernatural, but is respectful of it so that he would not offend anyone or anything. Finally, he is physically fit due to his proper nutrition and training in combat, but he has never been in actual combat.

Name: Junkojuro

Age: 412

Gender: Male

Race: Fox Youkai

Appearance: Junkojuro

Junkojuro has three tails, and can also take on a full fox form with white fur and similar crimson markings. Those who do not have heightened spirit awareness will not see the crimson markings when he is in his fox form, and will not see any of his fox-like features when he is in his human form. No matter what he is doing, whether it be lounging in a tree or fighting for his life, he always seems to be relaxed. He has smooth and elegant movements, and a soft voice to match.

Personality: Junkojuro is a calm and level-headed individual, and is one of the few Youkai that seeks open discussion with humans. He believes that humans and spirits can peacefully coexist and that violence should only be used as a last resort, and thus has come to hold disdain for Youkai hunters and the like. Occasionally, he has offended important people by speaking too frankly, but he has done this only for the sake of honesty and not out of disrespect. Those that respect his wishes will find him kind and reliable; those that offend him will find him cold and bothersome.

Skills and Abilities: As a long-lived fox, Junkojuro is highly knowledgeable in both nature and the spirit world. He knows how to communicate with spirits and can act as a “middle-man” for the spirits, though he tends to represent the will of the spirit world more so than the human orientated priests/priestesses. Likewise, his spiritual awareness has given him a knack for telling when good or ill fortune is near.

Junkojuro can also harness the magical substance, foxfire. This blue flame does not behave like normal fire. While it can burn, it is more often used to create various kinds of illusions. He can create sounds, images, and sensations with the flame, and can appear however he wishes by cloaking himself with the substance.

Finally, as a long-lived spirit, he is stronger and faster than a normal human. Being a pacifist, he has not exercised these abilities to their fullest potential so a skilled warrior would be able to best him in combat, but Junkojuro prefers to rely on his wit anyway.

Possessions and Assets: Junkojuro’s most valuable possession is his Hoshi no Tama, a magical orb that all powerful fox spirits acquire. It is the source of all of his power and if another being were to claim it, Junkojuro would become powerless and would likely become subservient to that being. Because of the importance of the orb, Junkojuro has swallowed it, so one would either have to kill him or be sadistically creative to obtain it.

Junkojuro has influence over the creatures of the woods, especially foxes. He can influence the behavior of animals, and can even read knowledge straight from a fox’s mind, making them useful messengers.

Finally, Junkojuro is an adherent of the Kami Oinari, a deity associated with crops and fertility. Some have feared that such spirits could use their spiritual influence to bring a plague of crop failures down on a village. Junkojuro is not so insolent that he would attempt such an abhorrent act.

Bio: Folk tales say that a fox who lives for many years eventually acquires power and wisdom, growing more tails the stronger they become. Junkojuro was one such fox lucky enough to transcend his mortal form and enter the world of the Youkai. He has lived in the Mitsumine territory all his life and knows the forest, mountains, and caves better than any human alive. He has seen the rise and fall of many clan leaders, some of which he became good friends with, some of which he eagerly awaited their dying breath. His degree of involvement with the family has likewise fluctuated, but his existence has never been recorded and he has only been known to the leaders of the clan.

Currently, he has only had limited dealings with Takeshi, mostly because the man was mostly concerned with raising a good heir than for any personal distaste for the man. However, he has made his desire to meet with the young lord known. He is concerned with the rising tensions between the clans, and wants to determine if this new leader is one that he will work with or simply wait out.

Name: Hana, "The Crimson Scholar" "The Mistress of Whispers" "That Crazy Bean-Counter Woman"
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Appearance:

Hana is an attractive woman, and not even the folds of the red kimonos she favors can completely cover up curves to rival a geisha. However she does have a branding scar on her left shoulder she refuses to speak of, in the form of a black crow wing. She often wears red kimonos, red being her favorite color.

Personality:
Hana is at first glance a archetypal yamato nadeshiko woman. Dutiful, wise, mature, loyal, humble, all while hiding true steel behind a silken appearance. The last one she has trouble with as she doesn't hesitate to show her skill in economics and accounting. She always strives to be the best she can and doesn't hesitate to rise to a challenge in her field of finances, even if it means stepping out of the conservative role of a traditional woman.

In general, she rarely loses her calm focus and strictly rational insight into the world and people around her, even if it sometimes means she has trouble dealing with unexpected Youkai that interfere in her well-laid plans. However that rigidly rational attitude is being worn away as she has met and fallen in love with her lord, the heir to the Mitsumine Clan, and now works seeking his approval and favor.

Skills and Abilities:
* Innovative Bookkeeper- Hana's first and foremost skill, and the only one she will openly but softly boast of, is her ability to manage the numbers, sums, and finances of the Mitsumine Clan with astounding accuracy and speed unmatched by even the greatest of Imperial Bureaucrats. Not only that, she is actively improving upon her abilities with new financial techniques. Changing age-old systems set by the bureaucrats of the capital with her own unique sets of ciphers and bookkeeping methods. (Double-entry bookkeeping in an era of single-entry accounts)
* Merchant Visionary- While she is merely an assistant to the Master of Coin of the Mitsumine, Hana has some serious authority over the Mitsumine Clan's finances where her master gives her some freedom of action (mostly in recordkeeping and large-scale business transactions). But in other regards she is kept under tight watch by the Master who finds her secrecy involving her books quite suspicious.
* Whispers of Merchants - Hana always stays abreast of economic developments thanks to informants and maintaining a regular economic journal of all goods across the Imperial domains. And in the process quite a few rumors and pieces of information also like to fall into her lap.

Possessions and Assets:
Hana always carries with her a satchel laden with books, ink, and a quill, so she may write numbers or notes whenever needed. Her accounting books are in ciphers and organization only she can comprehend, with techniques unheard of by even Imperial Bureaucrats held within their bound pages.

Hana has a friendly rivalry with a Yuki-onna (Snow Girl) accountant of the Tiger Clan, who is one of the few that can rival her in financial skill and ability. While the two frequently fight and duel over tariffs, trade, and subverting businesses and guilds to their sway, the two are respectable friends on a personal level. The bored Yuki-Onna finds amusement in this human game of money now that she has found a strong opponent while Hana uses her opponent as a whetstone to sharpen her abilities against, and the two often swap stories and juicy information when the two meet. Yet for all their friendship, they don't know eachother by name. Merely the "Crimson Scholar" versus "The Frost Dancer". And both would prefer to keep it that way.

Hana is also able to tap into Master Tenzin's informants regarding financial and trade affairs. But such informants also report to the Master of Coin.

Bio: Hana is tight-lipped about where she came from and what her original birth family name was. She considers her true birth, and wakening to the field of trade and coin, to be when she was adopted by a wandering merchant from a foreign land at the age of 10, and she considers him to be the origin of all her ideas and way of thinking as they traveled and traded together as teacher and student. Then one day after reaching the age of 16, the trader disappeared, leaving Hana with his cart and all worldly possessions. In hindsight, Hana wonders if the merchant may have been a spirit of some sort, and refuses to speak of his name.

From there, Hana found herself adopted again by a major merchant guild of the Mitsumine Clan, when in her dealings she met the aged Master of Coin Matsuran Tenzin. Tenzen enlisted her as an assistant to replace his previous incompetent one upon seeing her make transactions in her hidden journals. For the next three years, it was a dance of interactions between the two as the old master Tenzin turned a wandering trader into a scholarly bureaucrat able to run the complex affairs of an entire clan, whilst trying to obtain her secrets for himself. To his amusement, he has so far failed despite his best efforts, and thus has kept Hana as a close assistant to watch her work and try to decipher her unusual skill. He keeps her so close, that he brought her to the clan heir's coronation just to show off his protege and point out how unusual she is.

And it was there she fell in love with her lord and master. Further driving her to succeed and aid in the Mitsumine Clan's rise of new power to obtain recognition and approval from her lord. Her position could not be more precarious. She is held in suspicion by some quarters of the clan for being an adopted outsider, many seek the secrets of accounting and finance she knows, and even her own master keeps watch over her actions. She merely thinks of it as challenges to rise to, if she is to be accepted by her lord.

Name: Kumori Hoyo, Countless Alias, Title: Lord of the Shadow, Lord Raven, The Beheader

Age: 30

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: Working on a descent photo(s)

Personality: Kumori is a very stoic individual, keeping a distance to those he knows nothing about. Those he trusts are still watched while, those he loathes are kept closer. With information and assassination his pinnacle of skills, he values himself a small but important part of the clans turning cogs. While he does value clan, he value's his own clan with more authority. Even though they are loyal to the Mitsumine Clan due to the considerable sum by Takeshi to protect Ryu from any foreign threats, his loyalty is unwavering. A virtue whether it means life or death, he would glad give his life to the nothingness of the shadows. Keeping out of public eye he watches over the high figures of a clan, from a distance or in disguise. As time has passed since Ryuu's coming Kumori has developed a fondness of the Mitsumine, not know what it truly is in his being. He keeps diligence all the same. But... seems rather odd perhaps or rather most think it was the style of his upbringing.

Skills and Abilities:
Information Network: Threw his clan he keeps tabs on the happening outside of the Mitsumine clans lands. In disguise his agents keep a watchful eye on key figures in other clans. Information is sent via raven in code to keep all knowledge privy to himself and the agent in question.
Striking from the Abyss: Assassination if it is ever needed is one of Kumori's key assets, with a reputation to match it. Known to strike without hesitation any target deemed a threat to the Mitsumine would perish. Most often in a very disturbing manner.
Shadow Step: If the occasion need him and his concentration is in order, Kumori is able to fade in with the shadows. Day or night he can do this but his mind is only able to do this so much or he would fall in the darkness. Often called Lord Shadow because of this key skill.

Possessions and Assets:: Well being an assassin/spy there are far too many items to be named. Kept in hidden stash about the Mitsumine Clan's lands. Though immediate personal possessions include Ninjato, bamboo blowgun, variety of smoke bombs, and tanto . At anyone time though the list varies to what suits the needs at the expense of the moment. Maybe more or maybe less it often varies. Not always wearing the typical black as depicted but also stashed is a variety of different clothing, in case a disguise is need to infiltrate or to elude. His clan which has been kept secret often supplies him with information that might be key to Mitsumine, though not always vital. Tabs are kept regardless.

Bio: Kumori was born fatherless, though his clan idolized his father for the tremendous deeds and ability to step into the shadows, a trait passed from father to son. Though his mother wasn't sweet and nurturing like the stereotypical mother would be but for ruthless in her son duties, demanding perfection in his training to be worthy of his fathers namesake. In the sake of perfection, hunger, scaring and sleepless night incurred his adolescence. Such a thing scared most, but in to keep true with his line Kumori never forgot the efforts of his father nor the perfectionism of his mother. Only such love was shown is praises of skill or when near death was imminent, including a mass of scaring across his torso as a reminder of all that has gained threw life and to never forget who he was.

As of the age fifteen, the first actual assignment of to start of a life from darkness and in shadows of others. It was a lone target, unknowing of who he was or the crimes that was deemed a target of another; but all the same it would carried out with the utmost hast. A lone in a city of hundreds, Kumori tracked his target for days. Never gaining too much of position to let steel taste flesh, close but never a lone moment to execute the target. Finally the hour came at night after two weeks of diligence, after visiting with a geisha he stalked. Forcing curiosity of target, ponder on a nearby racket which was actually a few cats fighting. Coming from behind swiftly, letting cold steel taste the flesh of his neck but didn't go threw all the way. Taking two hacks before head was severed, taking with him from the target a gold studded chain soaked in blood to indicate his success.

As as the years passed and the perfection of his father's gift to him, he was embraced as the clans forerunner in assassination, though often hired in cases in which an example was made because of his style to remove the head from the body. Success is prominent and failure had never been an option in which in some cases Kumori had been asked for specifically, not by name but by reputation.

Takeshi of the Mitsumine had met with the clans leader, needing an adamant and stalwart protector for the new Mitsumine Clan leader. In secret a fortune was paid to the clan for its services to protect Ryuu. In return one man was offered up for the job, the most loyal and obedient man of the clan was offered in which his services was instated for life. As a demonstration of his skill, Kumori had slipped in and out of Takeshi's sealed chambers leaving a solitary note. 'He is protected'.

(My bad on a few things, writers block but wanted to get it done.)

Alright, let me give recommendations in order...

Junkojuro: Very good! Though we'll need to come up with a cover story for him. Takeshi while in recent years involving himself more in spiritual manners, meditation and the such is blind to the supernatural world and while devout, he acts more out of faith rather than actually having signs of the spiritual world being quite palpable.

Hana: Very interesting character as I expected! I quite like Hana, however, I feel like she needs to be toned down a little. At the moment the Heir of the Mitsumine is young and barely coming into his responsibilities... thus him and by extension, his entourage have a lot of leveling up to do. And as she stands, Hana seems like she's already the ultimate version of what she is. I do want her to have the talent and promise to be one of the greatest economist of the realm, however, I don't want her to already be there by the beginning.

Kumori: Will reserve notes on him until the application is done, however, I shall reveal some plans for ninja that I had and that I unfortunately, didn't share before this moment. There are about three major ninja clans hidden in the nation. These pledge loyalty, in general, to not one house... instead, they operate in their hidden forts, take contracts by pay... but they do build relationships with one family or the other. For instance, Boar, Wolf and Turtle may all share their same alliance to a particular shinobi school who by the right price provide them with their members to reside around them as spy masters, bodyguards and general advisors, with possibilities to hire strikes on particular targets.

As for the questions... Economically, the Mitsumine's are doing just fine if perhaps not on an optimal position due to oversight on Takeshi's part due to him retreating to his manse. The branch family ruling the capital and the mines are squandering their wealth after securing their holds for a few years now. Still, economy is currently stable and their is a comfortable cushion of coin in the treasury to handle an emergency or start a new project. Likewise, there are stores of rice with enough food in them to feed roughly 25% of the population during a winter sorely in reserve. However, something to be said of the mines is that they are not developed to the max. These could be expanded, incorporate newer technologies and more sites with ores could be found and worked on.

As for their armies... the Mitsumine currently don't have a standing army due to being in a time of peace. The keep on the passes to the Mitsumine lands is currently unmanned and abandoned for 9 years. Instead, a small but highly mobile force of 'rangers' keep watch on the passes and the lands beyond (The Mitsumine have roughly three or so farming villages beyond the pass to the majority of their lands). All of the cities have their own city watch and as usual, the nobles of the Mitsumine tend to all be trained samurai when possible. There may be a couple families of warriors that still train in their ways and keep themselves sharp.

I have a very simple cover story for Junkojuro in mind. Whenever he is in plain sight, he acts as a lowly groundskeeper. He can change his appearance, so as the years go on he makes himself look older and older, and ever fifty or so years he appears as the "new" groundskeeper, the "son" of the previous one. If he wants to request an audience, he would simply disguise it as a matter of environmental hazards, be it wild animal attacks or a potential cave-in in one of the mines. If he wants to convince somebody of his true form, he could simply transform into his full fox form before them, surely enough to convince any skeptic. So, Junkojuro probably wants to keep up this cover until he is certain that the young lord is not the type to execute Youkai on the spot. In the meantime, the groundskeeper "family" has a spiritual lineage, and he can still offer spiritual council on the grounds of family traditions. Perhaps he even offered meditation techniques to Takeshi.

Hm. Glad to know I need to done her down rather than scale her abilities up. That way I know what I can grow up into. Okay, how to tone her down:

Reducing her immediate financial savvy and strengthening Master Tenzin's hold over her. Ultimately she is a subordinate to a long-standing Mitsumine servant, and she's an adopted outsider to boot. While she has been nominally accepted, she's withholding major trade secrets from the clan, and thats a serious point of contention.

That would work quite well, Skylar! Given how Ryuunosuke is at the moment not so recognized by all the powers in the Mitsumine lands and the branch family are pretty much ruling things in the Capital, Tenzin could remain at the capital while sending her as his subordinate to keep and eye and court favor with the young heir to appraise him. Hmmm also, her double entry bookkeeping could be something she's still figuring out and doing early tests on so that she can make the breakthrough and employ it for the first time sometime in the RP.

Yeah yeah, I can do all that. For double-entry bookkeeping, it could be that she's still having to deal with the major issue of long-term bonds and loans with interest. She can handle immediate affairs well, but long-term banking and deals are a problem. Then theres also the issue that she goes through a lot of expensive ink and paper for her books, even for a bureaucrat.

Really looking forward to this game. This is gonna be fun!
