Yeah, without the robed guy forcing the other guards to fight Alaira could have scared off everyone. Like you guys observed, they were a bunch of ragged guardsmen. They're at least smart enough to know you're all going to kick their asses. They needed magic to convince them to stand and fight.
And also, that's why this next fight should go much better for you Free. Meirin and Ssarak just need to explain the plan and this time, you can show just how much damage Alaira can do. Using the grenade metaphor, this is what would happen when you catch the enemy by surprise. None of them would expect someone to know where they're at and to attack them head on. While they might all be together they won't be prepared if Alaira say, rushes out from the bushes screaming bloody murder as she pulps the head of one of the guys in the dress (Hint: The guys in the dress are the Psychomancers). Taking them out and the worse you'd have to deal with is thralls and ghouls, which are really only a physical threat.
All that needs to happen is for you guys to communicate and tell each other what's going to happen. Evidently Alaira is best used when you want to get into a fight and making sure the enemy doesn't shut her down. Those Psychomancers won't know what hit them, and certainly wouldn't figure out if they're dead before they can come to their senses. All Alaira needs to do is be stealthy up to the point where she kills one of them, and than the others can move in to ensure she doesn't get overwhelmed or at least get some kills themselves.
Really, the only weakness Alaira has is Psychomancer specifically. If she could just learn to hit them when they aren't ready for it or at least not draw attention to herself, they won't be a problem at all.
