[OOC] Katawa Shoujo RP (school for disabled students)

Introduction:

Secluded and sheltered, Yamaku rests atop a small mountain in rural Japan. The perfect location of tranquility for a school for students with disabilities. Its facilities are entirely wheelchair accessible and outfitted with nearly every comfort imaginable to cater to the special needs of those enrolled here. Overseen and tended to nearly 24/7 by the medical staff present, all is arranged to give these students the chances they would not have in a regular school.
With its green grounds, rural, gated community and abundance of extracurricular activities available, there is something here for nearly all types of students. Be it art, soccer or culture, all is encouraged and supported. The vicinity of a small town just down Yamaku's hill and easy accessibility to the nearby city only add to its ideal location.
However, while meant to protect the students, it was never Yamaku's intention to shut them away from the public eye, rather prepare them for life after graduation to make them valued members of society despite their disabilities. It's only natural however, that new students don't always see it this way. After all, did coming here not reinforce the idea that you were no longer normal? That your disability defines you?
With the new semester starting, new and old students all converging back to Yamaku, the first few weeks are going to be filled with adjusting and getting used to your new life. Welcome to Yamaku!

Additional information

• There'll be no canon characters.
• Yamaku doesn't accept students with severe mental disabilities.
• Most RP will take place outside of classes, considering many character will probably be in different classes.
• There'll be some events later on. (School culture festival, Student Council election, sports festival, field trips, ...)
• Use of npc's is encouraged. (Teachers, nurse(s), other students, ...)

Maksim

5'9", slim but slightly fit build.
Name: Maksim Kato
Age: Seventeen
Grade (1st/2nd/3rd year): Third year
Disability: Near-blind. Can see colors and changes in light, somewhat able to make out figures.
Personality: Maksim is and odd and monotone boy. Between his expression typically being blank and his voice having little to no inflection, he can be quite hard to read. Do not take this as disinterest though, he's actually a bit of a people person. There's always something on his mind, and he's often willing to share, whether you can actually figure out what he's trying to say or not... Different story entirely. At heart, Maksim is very empathetic, despite his apathetic appearances. Willing to do just about anything to help one in need, he's a good friend to have, and will treasure any help in return.
Background: Maksim was born 6 weeks prematurely to a Japanese father and a Russian mother. As Maksim grew, his vision depreciated severely. Even with travelling back and forth between Moskow and Osaka, his parents could not find a doctor that understood why the boy's sight was worsening so quickly, just that his eyes may not have properly developed in utero.

Although both parents being fairly stressed by their son's impairment, it didn't seem to bother Maksim. He was always a very level headed child, and he was able to get on fine with a thick pair of glasses. The more years went on, the less Maksim was able to see. It was getting harder and harder for him to make it through public schools and get along with other students. His glasses and constant fumbles made him an easy target, and the constant teasing pushed Maksim to be a bit of a shut-in.

After much discussion, the Katos decided the best thing they could do for their son was to send him to Yamaku. Perhaps the only school that could truly accept Maksim, help him learn to live with what little vision he has left, and prepare him for the inevitable total blindness to follow.
Other Info: Out of all his available senses, touch is Maksim's favorite. Constantly feeling things, he's developed preferences in sensations. This carries over to his current hobby, art. Despite not being able to really see what he's creating, Maksim sculpts clay into shapes that "feel" beautiful. Taste being a close second, he has a weakness for flavored teas and sweets.

Name: Kirihara Hana

Age:15

Grade (1st/2nd/3rd year): 1st Year

Disability: Deaf and Mute

Personality: Hana is a serious yet well-mannered girl. She is not really extroverted enough where she would go out of her way to make new friends, but she will talk to anyone who wishes to talk to her. However, she is often viewed by her peers as insincere or cold. She's confused as to why that is and is trying to work on that so she can make the friends her parents always wanted her to have. She often spends her time in the library, reading and studying, or in her room to take care of her dolls.

Background: When Hana was born, her parents sensed that something was wrong. After a few tests at the hospital, it was discovered that Hana was born deaf much to the dismay of her parents. She was their first and only child and the fact that she was born imperfectly was heartbreaking. While they have showered her with gifts such as cute clothes and dolls and have been exceptionally good parents to her, she could still feel their disappointment but cannot do anything about it. Her parents also learned how to communicate in sign language so they could help teach her how to sign as well. For most of her childhood, she was home schooled after a failed attempt of joining a regular preschool. Eventually when she became old enough, she enrolled into Yamaku Academy to be with others like her. Her parents hope that she will make new friends and have a fulfilled life while Hana only wants to make her parents happy.

Other Info:
Because she was born without her hearing, she values her eyesight. She loves to look at all things beautiful and surround herself with beautiful things.
To help communicate with people who do not know sign language, she carries a white board and marker to write what she wants to communicate with them and allows other to write on it as well.
She owns an extensive doll collections and treasure them as if they were her own children.

Aimi Hayashi

If she could stand, she would be 135 cm tall (about 4’5”).

Name: Aimi Hayashi

Grade: 3rd year, age 14.

Disability: Full body paralysis caused by having her spinal cord severed.

Personality: Aimi is a very intelligent individual; she’s two years ahead in school. Her mind tends to wander to dark places a lot of the time; she’s very quiet and reserved and generally not willing to interact with people. (sorry this is so short, I prefer to reveal personalities when I’m in character.)

Background: Aimi had a fairly normal, albeit short, childhood. Accelerated two years in school, though it probably could have been more, she had to grow up fairly fast.

When she was ten, she got into a car accident. No one's exactly sure what happened, nor who was at fault. She was riding home from school with her sister; their car was hit by another student's. Akira and the other driver were killed; Aimi was left with a sheared-off spinal column. She was left disabled, in the shadow of four promising, whole older brothers.

Her saving grace was her best friend in the world, Ayako Koizumi. Her friend, having gone blind from an accident in the chemistry lab, agreed to push Aimi’s wheelchair around, if Aimi would be her eyes. They managed like this for one year at the regular school, but both were mocked incessantly for being different. After a depressed episode for both girls, their parents sent them to the Katawa Shoujo Academy, so that they could be around people “of whole spirits”, the euphemism their parents used to describe other disabled people.

Other Info: She wears a necklace with a miniature replica clarinet on it. If you touch her necklace, you will die.

Ayako Koizumi

Stands 160 cm (5 feet and 3 inches)

Name: Ayako “Aya” Koizumi

Grade and Age: 2nd year, age 15

Disability: Blindness and scarring all over her face.

Personality: Aya is broken on the inside, but hides it all behind a smile and her milky blue eyes. She’s excellent at concealing her emotions, but is easily hurt on the inside. She tends to have an overactive imagination to better visualize the people and places she’s around.

Background: “S-sir, w-w-with a-all due r-respect, you p-perhaps sh-shouldn’t a-allow K-Katashi t-to m-mix ch-chemicals--”
“Silence. Unless you would rather teach this class, hmm?”
“N-no s-s-sir.”
Katashi was her lab partner. A total goofball who always tried ill-fated, harebrained schemes. On titration day in Chemistry, he thought it would be a good idea to mix hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide in a test tube and shake it. The reaction was quite violent, and the lid came flying off the test tube and the contents spraying all over his hapless lab partner: Aya. She wound up with acid eating away at her eyes and face. Though she rinsed herself off in the emergency eye wash sink, with the laughter of her classmates as a backing track, the damage was done: she was blinded.
She felt horrible. Having been Aimi’s only friend in the months following the car accident, she felt as though she could no longer protect her friend. Until Aimi suggested a compromise. “I’ll be your eyes if you be my body.” And she agreed. The two work seamlessly as a team.

Other Info: Like Aimi’s surrogate older sister. Fiercely protective and loyal.

Personality:
Kenshi is diligent and very handworking, especially when it comes to kendo. He often appears cold or apathetic to others and as some tsundere tendencies. Prone to rage fits and outbursts, he hates people who insult family or people who are overall jerks.

He also has a "kinder" side which involves him being a NEET more or less, binge watching anime and playing games. Despite outcry from some teachers and adults, his grades still remain at a good level so he gets away with it.

Biography:
Kenshi's father died to a chronic illness when he was only five, telling him to "be strong and protect your little sister and mom". Taking those words to heart, he decided that kendo would be the best way to protect his mom and little sister, Yui. He maintained good grades as he went to daily lessons at the local dojo and rose to a respectable position in it. When he was 11, he had met Arisaka Touka at the dojo and the two instantly fell in love with each other, training togther in pairs and going out on dates on the weekends.

Unfortuantely, when Kenshi was 14, his good fortune took a change. As he, Touka and Yui were going out to an amusemnt park (his mother was working late and asked the two to keep Yui entertained), they were attack by muggers. Despite bravely defeating them, all three of them were worse for wear. Kenshi took the brunt of the damage, being stabbed multiple times including once in the eye and blacked out. Yui was covered in bruises and had her arm broken but would live. Touka was stabbed at least once and was knocked out cold.

Three days later he would wake up in a hospital, he discovered that his former girlfriend had lost her memory, forgetting who Kenshi was outside of a classmate. Devistated, he mourned as if they had both died, seeing both Touka and Yui as symbols of his failure to protect them. He remembered his father's words and how he had failed him, promising to get stronger no matter what. Since then, he has been living with his uncle and aunt so he doesn't have to face his mother and sister, attending both mental and physical therapy, picking up martial arts along side his kendo and transferring to Yamaku Academy in hopes of starting anew.

Misc Info:
- He spends a huge amount of energy and time on kendo and martial arts, despite the fact he often manages to injure himself as he hasn't quite got his balance or grip with his new limbs.
- He named his Bokkun (wooden kendo sword), "Blade of Hope" as it was a gift from his uncle who gave it to him as to try and cheer him up. Has the family crest stamped into the handle
- Secretly writes a light novel series known as "Watashi wa genjitsu no sekai de tachiōjō fantajī no hīrōdesu" (Watachji Hirodesu), meaning "I'm a fantasy hero stuck in the real world", under the the pen name "Seto Karashi". The story follows a group of fantasy RPG characters who are taken out of their game and force to live in the real world with much of the story them trying to adapt to modern technology and life while trying to get promoted at their work, McJangles. Has a sizable following (Think a combination of The Devil is a Part Timer and a reversed SAO or Log Horizon).

Disability:
Keiko is mute, thanks to an accident that almost cost her her life. Now, the mouthy teen is being forced to adapt to a life of silence. She absolutely hates it.

Keiko has short black hair, normally wears a jacket and usually jeans or other long pants. She doesn't take her appearance to seriously. She stands a roughly 5'5", and has a scar on her throat from her injury. She doesn't like talking about it.


Personality:
Well, to put bluntly, Keiko would be described as incredibly energetic. At least, if she was going to be describing herself. Some other people by describe her as being a bit of a brat that can't follow simple instructions. Not to mention she, herself, does not like people that whole lot and has little patience for them. Especially people, who she believes, are stupid. (translation: Everyone but her) So she can come off as a sarcastic ass most of the time.

That said, she's not unfriendly. Unless you give her a legitimate reason to really not like you, mostly any comments she makes can be taken with a grain of salt. She just likes being difficult, and has little consideration for others. Something she is probably definitely going to have to work on here.

She likes playing the drums, and even though she wails randomly on them a lot of the time, she can actually play. While she doesn't hide the scar from the surgery, she does not like talking about it a whole lot, and will likely change the subject if she can. She will most likely find herself a drum set - or a makeshift drum set failing that, and take it to somewhere outside the school and play them very loudly.

Its also well known in her previous school, she was most definitely not into guys.

Background:
Keiko was born and raised in Japan. Her father, a doctor - a surgeon, and her mom who was an accountant. She had a relatively comfortable life, normal growing up. She pretty much could get her hands on anything she wanted - though even at a young age she preferred doing things herself, without the help of other people.

When she was 14, her best friend showed her drums, and she instantly fell in love with them. She spent most of her school life focusing on her drumming skills ever since then, much to both of her parents rather obvious dismay. They tried to push her to do more school work, but only ended up fighting about it more often than not.

It was during one of these arguments, that her life would inevitably change forever. She was out with her parents, and after another discussion that turned into a pointless argument, it happened. A stupid, chance accident caused by some idiot kid who thought waving around a gun would be cool.

She got off, lucky, really, neck injuries aren't something to laugh about. The bullet managed to miss any major arteries, and missed her spinal cord. Thankfully, her father was able to administer first aid, and keep her alive long enough for proper medical attention to be administered.

She doesn't remember much of the incident, save for one recurring nightmare.

The surgeons managed to remove the bullet and its fragments, and save her life, but the damage was done. The bullet had nicked some nerve in her neck - the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve - whatever that was. Doctors attempted to remove the bullet and repair the nerve, but ultimately failed in doing so. Ultimately, she lost her voice completely.

She, was completely dumbfounded by the fact, that she would never be able to speak again. At least, probably be never able to speak. The doctor mentioned there was a chance that the nerve could repair itself - but it was unlikely. A second surgery might also be able to help, since her life was no longer in danger, but her father ultimately denied letting her do that.

So, after some time, she enrolled in Yamaku Academy, though she didn't want too.

She really, really, doesn't want to be here.

Other Info:
- Doesn't like people talking about, or talking to people about the scar on her neck.
- Is, in fact, into other girls.
- Does not like spicy food.

Like I posted in my version of the character sheet (which people may or may not have seen since it isn't all that obvious I admit), I'm a little allergic to overly dramatic backgrounds. In an RP such as this, there's bound to be a lot of drama of course though your character's background seems a little over the top. Now I'e got no issues with his father dying and his home getting broken into, him getting injured in the process and all that. However, forced to watch as his girlfriend and sister are raped and killed seems a bit much to me. Could you find a way to make it a bit less extreme?
