Blood Compact: Apocalypse
Introduction <
Approximately 2000 years ago, a strange strain of mutations appeared in the human species. A new strain of humans appeared to emerge, with strangely morphed physiologies and inhuman appetites. They were stronger and faster than normal humans, as well as appearing to be nearly immortal. These strange beings were called demons, angels, spirits and gods. But in the end, a single name stuck. One that perhaps described this new species of humans best. They were henceforth called..... vampires!
Now, of course, we are well aware that these changes are not supernatural in origin. Instead they are the direct result of exposure to the strange lifeform Obscurus Sanguis, also referred to as the Vampire Virus. This strain of rogue cells is able to infiltrate the host body, and to drastically alter it. In this lecture we will be discussing the nature of Obscurus Sanguis, as well as the effect it has on the human body and the various existing strains.
General Information <
[TLDR; this stuff turns people into vamps. Different types make different vamps.]
The origins of Obscurum Sanguis are shrouded in mystery, and a topic of constant debate. The explanations range from the unlikely to the outright impossible, and the subject confounds many of our greatest minds. Only this organism appeared as suddenly as it did, with no previous recorded presence and no similar lifeforms, making it an enigma. As this ground is filled with more speculation than science, I would prefer to refrain from discussing it. Suffice to say this is an area where we are not yet able to apply our knowledge, although no doubt in time we will find a logical explanation.
Previously, Obscurum Sanguis had been referred to as a bacteria. It's common name also implies it is a virus. Both of these are in fact incorrect, as instead it appears to be a partial single-celled organism. I say partial because it individually lacks many of the requirements for a single-celled organism to survive, and can only survive by attaching itself to human cells. Hence it functions as a symbiote of sorts, although some would argue it is parasitic in nature. It seems to only be able to survive in a human body, and cannot survive for long on it's own. It furthermore appears to be far more complex than even the vast complexity represented by human cells, with functioning parts reaching down to the subatomic level. This all places it in a category of it's own, as there is no similar organism on the planet.
There are many strains of Obscurum Sanguis, but most share a number of traits. The cells tend to store a number of types of 'DNA' which appear to have been gathered from previous hosts, meat, and other sources. This appears to be the reason that the alterations performed in many strains are animalistic in nature, and may also explain how the mutating cells can continue to create useful, or at least not negative, alterations. The exact makeup of these different types of DNA and what is drawn from each, as well as how this information is applied to the human DNA makeup, is a mystery.

Vampires are altered humans, infected by Nosferatu. This lecture will mainly address the 'Draculan' strain, or, Bloodline, as is the term of their preference. As the various Bloodlines are quite diverse in their specific properties, we will be forced to specify. We will also cover some of the more prominent variations later on in this lecture.
The Draculan vampires are easily the most prominent variation, due to the ease with which they spread. Whilst most strains of Nocturnis spread with great difficulty, requiring prolonged exposure and even then only occasionally taking hold, the Draculan strain is capable of infecting new hosts rapidly and with relative ease. Any time this strain enters the blood it begins the conversion, and if left untreated, almost 70% of all cases end up in full conversions to vampirism. This rate of infectivity is perhaps because this strain is the best adapted to the human body.
The Drulan strain maintains it's body heat, and the main body remains 'living'. Most of it's functions are not changed all too greatly, aside from an alteration in the makeup of the individual cells. The Nocturnus grants these cells the ability to rapidly multiply, regerating any damage dealt to the body in a matter of moments. They are also able to survive large amounts of blood loss, although losing blood will cause them to slow down and may eventually kill them. It enhances the target's senses, as well as increasing their muscle growth and efficiency. Even the weakest of Draculan vampires would seem to be beyond peak human physical strength and speed, and due to their enhanced senses they make excellent night hunters. They have also developed a pair of extended canines with hollow insides, which allow them to drain the blood of their victims. The regerative capabilities compensate for cell degeneration, to an extent, and Draculan vampires age at approximately 1/5 of the normal rate for a human being.
While vampires are immune to most poisons, Draculan vampires can be poisoned by the blood of other Draculan Vampires, which accelerates their transformation towards a Stage Two Vampire. A sufficiently large dose will instantly initiate the transformation, as the concentration of Obscurum Sanguis increases. Simply acquiring this much of the substance, however, is incredibly difficult.
Draculan Nosferatu is mutagenic, indicating that it mutates between generations. This means that individual vampires will often have subtle differences, or individual quirks. Some have the ability to see the infrared spectrum, while others have developed more pronounced fangs reminiscent of a Stage Two Vampire. A statistically improbably low amount of 'negative' mutations have been found, which seems to indicate there is some unseen driving mechanism behind these subtle changes. Due to the Draculan strain's mutagenic nature it has been proposed that it's predecessor is the original strain, and that all other variations are offshoots of this particular strain that deviated too far from the original. There is no solid evidence to support this hypothesis, however.
These vampires form a severe problem, as they require the blood of a human to retain their human appearance. Should they fail to ingest blood over a period of about a month, depending on the individual, they will begin to enter Stage Two Vampirism. They will lose their sense of humanity, and become increasingly aggressive. If left untreated and unsated for a few days, the damage dealt to the higher brain functions will become practically irreversible, and they will have devolved into a Stage Two Vampire, or what is commonly referred to as a 'feral' Vampire. This is accompanied by a number of physical changes listed below.
After the higher brain functions have been completely eliminated, the subject's body will begin to alter itself drastically. The prominent canines will be replaced by a full mouth of fangs designed to drain a victim of all blood rapidly. The skeletal structure will become more elongated, and long bone claws will extend from the fingertips. The victim will also find their eyes enlarging and turning white, making them perfect night hunters, but shy of sunlight. This lack of sunlight tends to make them very pale, and they tend to lose their hairs. A Stage Two Vampire cannot revert to it's original form no matter how much blood it devours, as the basic form of the Nosferatu seems to have altered. The strength and speed of a Stage Two Vampire is superior to it's Stage One Counterpart, but it's intelligence is severely limited. Interestingly, the mutagenic properties do not seem to affect a Stage Two Vampire, and almost all Stage Two Vampires are identical, with several notable exceptions. Lastly, blood from a Stage Two Vampire cannot turn a human, as the alterations it attempts to perform will usually lead to a painful death.
There are a number of self-professed Bloodlines within the Draculan strain who have inherited certain specific traits due to it's mutagenic effects, but the scientific consensus is that these are still part of the original strain. While it is possible that these Bloodlines will eventually deviate from the original far enough that it would form a separate strain, no change in the severity of the traits inherited by these self-professed Bloodlines has been detected in the last 50 or so years.
Next up, we will discuss several of the other prominent types of Nosferatu. Bear in mind that we are not able to cover all existing strains in the time we have, as there are many tiny strains that have appeared mostly in remote locations. We are discovering new strains even to this day, and not all of them have even been named. we will only be covering the main groups.

This specific species of Vampire appears to have drawn a lot from the DNA of dogs and wolves, hence their name. This type is as infectious as the Draculan strain, but the method in which the infected hunt tends to kill those who would have a chance of turning before they can do so. This, combined with the generally secluded nature of this strain, tends to reduce the numbers. However, they make up for this in ferocity.
Unlike with Draculan vampires, werewolves have three Phases. The first phase is similar in appearance to a human being, with the exception of canine eyes. However, these vampires are able to undergo a rapid transformation into a far more combat-oriented form, in which a cocktail of hormones and additional muscles vastly boosts their speed and strength. In this form their muscles tend to bulge, and they gain a thin coating of fur. Furthermore, their canines become more pronounced, although not to the extent that it can be seen in some other vampire strains. These individuals are essentially still human until they choose to transform, which causes a rush of adrenaline-like hormones to make them more aggressive and vastly increases bloodlust. They retain most of their reason however, and many are able to control this form.
The Second Stage of the Werewolf Strain is initiated when a First Stage Werewolf devours a human being. Up until this point the Werewolf is able to sustain itself on normal human foods, but devouring human meat is the turning point. After this point the Werewolf's body permanently morphs to more closely resemble that of a canine. Their bulk increases significantly, they gain a coat of fur, and their face extends into a snout. They furthermore gain teeth and claws, as well as vastly enhanced strength and speed. They further become completely carnivorous, and unable to draw sustenance from vegetable matter. Much like with other Stage Two Vampires, Stage Two Werewolves have an altered brain. However, their thoughts remain mostly intact. They gain a group mentality, often forming 'packs', and become more aggressive. This form is far less bloodthirsty than the transformation of the First Stage, however, as it no longer has the rush of hormones egging it on. Second Stage Vampires are physically superior to most strains of Vampires, with incredible strength, speed and senses. They also have incredibly sturdy bodies, their fur coated skin tough enough to absorb small arms fire without injury. They also heal quickly, although they still take a number of days to recover from serious wounds, unlike the rapidly regenerating Draculan Vampires. Their lifespans are only slightly longer than humans, with an average age of approximately 110 years.
The Third Phase of the Werewolf Strain is perhaps the most dangerous. The transformation into the Third Phase occurs when a Second Stage Werewolf eats one of it's kin. The result is perhaps one of the most terrifying creatures in this day and age. The Third Stage Werewolf becomes far larger than before, often standing at three meters or higher, and prefer four legs to two. They furthermore gain a significant amount of strength and resilience, and become far more animalistic. They retain an animal cunning, and some semblance of reason, and are even able to speak. They are devoured by bloodlust however, and quite often hunt down and eat their own kind. These creatures will not form packs, thank God, and fight one another to the death when they meet in nature. Their hide can block even heavy arms fire, and it takes explosives or anti-tank weaponry to take one down. Reports of a fully formed Third Phase Werewolf, also referred to as an Alpha, is grounds for military action.
This strain isn't all that Mutagenic, and the greatest variety that can be found within these creatures is in fur colouring. They are most common in isolated, wildernis areas, however, and this has made extensive investigation difficult.

This strain of vampires is relatively rare, but sufficiently influential that it must be mentioned. They are also one of the most mysterious of vampiric strains, and potentially one of the most dangerous. If ever you are to encounter a member of this strain, I would recommend running.
The first trait that sets these vampires aside is that their bodies are dead. Cell analysis shows that there is no activity on a cellular level, and only a mild regeration factor prevents the body from rotting away completely. Their organs are no longer functioning, their muscles completely destroyed. It would appear to the outsider that this is impossible, as these beings are fully functional, and Gabriellan vampires are in part responsible for spreading the myth of vampires being supernatural beings. However, we have recently discovered just how this amazing feat is possible.
Almost every task that would normally be performed by the body has been taken over by Obscurus Sanguis. It resides in the bloodstream, and uses a form of intercellular communication in order to maintain the consciousness. This form of communication seems to make use of entangled quantum fields in order to transmit information from one location to another at FTL speeds. The cells furthermore form chemical bonds that pull and push one another, which, when applied in unison, allow the entire bloodstream to function as a giant muscle, controlled by this quantum mind.
This has some unexpected and bizarre side effects. For one, the body of these creatures will continue functioning almost no matter what is done to it. No vital organs, air, or anything of the like are necessary for the creature to continue functioning. It is in many ways a corpse animated by the Obscurum Sanguis inside of it. Decapitation, impalement, and even flame throwers are mere mild annoyances to these vampires, temporary incapacitation. They don't age, and they don't die. Furthermore, they're able to control their limbs from a distance even after they've been separated from the body.
In addition to their massive endurance, these vampires are stronger and faster than humans. However, their strength is, on average, slightly inferior to that of Draculan Vampires. This is easily compensated for, however, by perhaps their most impressive capability.
While Draculan vampires possess an array of biological weapons, Draculan vampires seem to explore an equally vast collection of 'psionic powers'. They seem to be able to exploit the particular traits of the Obscurum Sanguis to manifest dangerous effects. They're able to use their intercellular communication to telepathically communicate with others of their species, and by forcing others to ingest their blood some can even mind-control humans. Others use their powers to directly control their blood outside their body, using it as a weapon, and some are able to abuse the energy-generation of the cells for lethal heat-based attacks. These techniques are varied, but it's shown that they're not genetic. Instead of a built-in ability these abilities seem to be 'learnt', based on aptitude. Some particularly ancient Gabriellan vampires have mastered multiple techniques, or even developed their own. Luckily, almost all Gabriellan vampire are only able to learn a few of these abilities.
Gabriellan vampires are rare despite their immortality because of their reproduction. In order for them to turn a human, that human must be dead. However, the human must have ingested Gabriellan blood before his time of death, and the Obscurum Sanguis must have survived in his blood until the time of death. And even then, there's only a 40% chance of a successful turning. This chance becomes smaller and smaller depending on how diluted the Obscurum Sanguis becomes.

If you want to create a character, place the application in the OOC for approval. Once approved, I will place it within the Characters Tab myself. You can tell a character is approved by the fact that it is, in fact, in the Characters Tab. This helps keep things organized, and means that only the final draft of a character will be represented in the Characters Tab.
If you want to introduce an organisation, a new Strain of vampirism, or if you want to, in general, add to or change the lore, run it past me. I'm open to new ideas, but I require the ability to judge them before you apply them to your character/post.
The outcome of battles between characters is decided by the controllers of those characters. If they can't agree, I will attempt to mediate. Should this fail, I will make an absolute statement based on my observation of their capabilities and the situation.
