Any events that don't end up altered by the characters themselves will proceed as canon dictates. I'm not going to go actively out of my way to give characters the opportunity to disrupt the events as laid out by the story, because I'm far worse at figuring out the ripple-effect of things than GRRM, but if something does happen I'll try to keep it going on the fly.

I anticipate that our characters won't quite be important enough in the eyes of people like Tywin Lannister or Robb Stark to make any huge difference.

In my opinion, it’s best to let the story play out as things occur. Using the canon rigidly once the RP starts makes it difficult to follow eventually. I mean, it’s not like we’ll end up at the Red Wedding or anything… but what if we do? It might be a good idea to think openly once things get rolling since we’re likely to get thrown into some sort of Riverlands army (and I have ties to the Brackens, who get largely wrecked by the Lannister army) so I’m trying to gauge the “long term” if you will.

Throwing flavorful AU events might not be a bad idea, either.

Oh no, he has no idea. Thats why backstory of the tourney changes very little. He was still third son at the time. though, I imagine Lord Casper won't wait to long to let him know

...oops...well as another Knight Jon certainly respects your abilities, and as heir to house Vypren understands that to make an enemy of you would be unwise. Besides, as you said his xenophobia isn't super open or anything, so Jon may not even realize it exists
