The labyrinth took everything from them.
They said they'd be back. They'd said everything would be alright. They said that they could "be brave" and take care of themselves until they came back.
That was ten years ago.
Ten years to haunt the streets of Aladia like a pack of hungry dogs, accepting charity where they could. Well, Maryam had had enough. She wouldn't perform anymore tricks for food, she wouldn't watch as her younger sisters withered away year after year. She could not think, for another moment, how she had to choose which of her sisters got to eat while the other went hungry.
And so what did she do? She made a mistake.
The Black Scorpion hadn't seemed so scary to her starved, delirious mind. They had plenty of food they weren't eating. They wouldn't notice if a couple pears went missing.
How wrong she was.
She may have gotten ambitious during her raid, emboldened by the misconception that she'd already lost everything worth losing. When she was caught, she was informed otherwise: she had lots worth losing... The only two things that still mattered in her world.
And so she served, an obedient little slave. Evidently she had some innate talent, because they put her to work performing tasks that constantly challenged her both physically and mentally. Of course, she'd have sooner died than join them if her sisters were left to die on the streets, so she could take cold comfort in the fact that they were always nearby... Yet just out of reach. For a time, at least.
Maryam learned many secrets in her time with the Black Scorpion. She picked up many skills... And some that the 'Scorpion wasn't aware of.
In time, she would free herself and her sisters, and escape into the cursed labyrinth that claimed their lives. If not to find salvation... Then, at the least, to find closure, for her and her sisters.
In time... All would be set right. All she needed to do was wait, and gather her strength.

⬦ E Q U I P M E N T❧ Ember of Love: This ruby teardrop lovingly embraced by golden filigree was found on Maryam's mother, and contains all the warmth and love of a doting parent. Upon activation, the ruby ignites with a crimson light, filling those around it with renewed vigor and burning passion.
❧ Ember of Stars: Discovered in the possession of Maryam's late father, this gemstone inlaid with silver gives off a blue effluence of light when activated. Even the mightiest of tempers are doused by its steady light, instilling tranquility and steady thought. (This Ember was given to Nadia, the middle sister)
❧ Ember of Reason: Found alongside the Ember of Love, this jade teardrop radiates a purpose that cannot be denied: to protect and defend. Although this Ember is the most *selfish,* affecting only its wearer, the affect it has on the body could make an armadillo a dragon in terms of endurance. (This Ember was given to Zara, the youngest sister)
❧ Chakrams: Two circular blades, exotic in both movement and appearance. This is the weapon of choice for Maryam.

Shrewd beyond her years, Maryam lived the life of a street urchin, and then an agent of chaos. Forced to hone skills in deception and charisma, Maryam is more than capable of playing to anybody's tune... And perhaps changing it. Maryam also always had a natural affinity for Miracles, if nascant and frequently unresponsive. It's difficult to say what she is truly capable of, but if forced to confront her in close-quarters, you best pray she makes it quick.

Maryam's affinity for Miracles has always been lackluster. Despite all of her martial training and mental acuity, magic is simply a skill she has a poor grasp on. However, that's not to say she is magically inept- indeed, she is capable of conjuring quite spectacular flames, albeit not so great as to challenge a dragon.
