I was most likely going to commission the friend I usually go with, since I'm not really too big on going with AI character art and it can sometimes be a bit of a pain to find a reference that is just right lol. Either way, I'm pretty slow with character sheets so it might be a bit before I even get a WiP up just as an FYI.
Wonderful character concept. Very cool indeed! The ideas you have really help to flesh her out in this world and make her more well-rounded and real.

Although you won't be happy to read this lol But I only mentioned magical guns as an example of something that does exist in the world. Students at the academy don't use weapons. It's not an academy thing. Those weapons would be used by the Royal Guard, which is something a student might aspire to be after graduation. Now, if you're character's artificing skills help them, to say, create some kind of makeshift magical gun-like weapon for just herself, then I think that would be okay since she's a senior student and may have gotten permission from a professor to use it. Kind of like Forge from X-men uses his power to create magi-techy weapons for himself, but just himself. Weapons aren't something just readily available to students at the academy. They must rely on their magical gifts for combat and not everyone has a gift that is well-suited for combat. And that's okay. They can be useful in other ways.

It's funny, I went back and forth on whether or not students used weapons like guns, wands, swords, bow and arrows, etc. I even had created an Armory room and art for it at one point while drafting. Ultimately, I decided against it because I don't necessarily want this RP to be a fight fight fight fight fight kind of RP where everyone can run into any dangerous situation guns a blazing. I liked the more X-men approach, where students have to be more clever in combat situations because they are limited to the capabilities and weaknesses of their magical gift and nothing else. This also would require more thoughtful teamwork and would allow non-combat focused characters opportunities to shine in their own unique way. Guns and weapons and such kind of oversimplify any dangerous situation. So ultimately yeah, students don't use guns and weapons LOL


Despite building what would otherwise be a fairly combat heavy character, there was actually the idea of leaning more on the artifice side of things for her lol. Like, yeah on one hand in my head there was the gunslinger with artificed revolvers and some kind of 1600's style magitech wheel-lock repeating rifle going on monster hunts with the class or using specialized ammunition during the magic duels mentioned in the OP for the Colosseum or Dueling Room. Then on the other there was the idea of exploring the entire concept of actually making these things and testing them in something like the Halls of Artifice or whatever kinds of workshops they may have. Things like building new arms and legs, new and hopefully improved tools for expeditions, and of course a vitesse controlled laser eye. You know, to replace the one she lost lmao.

But yeah, I totally get trying to lean more towards the actual school-life aspect of X-Men rather than what we usually get from it, though I would say that there could still be a place for things like weapons training and hunting classes. I mean, not every jaunt through a portal is going to be a nice and relaxing one, right?

And I am considering a Discord. I'm not strictly opposed to it so long as everyone is Respectful of one another. That's REALLY big for me. I've seen Discords divulge into pettiness, personal attacks and really toxic behavior. Soooo, I'm not sure I'll start one for this RP, but I won't say no definitively. Giving it thoughtful consideration. Again, respect and kindness is KEY. Even if people disagree about something, it should be discussed with civility and maturity, no matter what.

As for Discord, in my experience RPs with them last longer than RPs without, but yeah toxic people are a concern. I RP with a few people here though, namely Crimson Flame, TheNoCoKid and Emeth, and can attest that they're respectful.


Having been around the forums for a bit now, I do feel that while there is a downside to Discord in that it can direct more conversations away from the thread and present the appearance of inactivity, there is a much greater benefit to having it from the expedience of character planning, the ability to quickly and dynamically develop pre-existing character relations, and of course the most important thing of all... A place to shitpost without disrupting the thread lmao.

But also, while I don't really know many of the people who have expressed interest so far, that at least means that most of the people here are alright enough that they don't have a reputation for themselves lmao. That I know of...
@Alfhedil Hi! Students attend the school for eight years. So 1st years to 8th years. A student's time at the school essentially starts once their gift manifests, so a late bloomer whose gift manifests when they are 19, would start as a 19-year-old first year and wouldn't graduate until their 8th year as a 26-year-old (this is rare, of course). Your year isn't determined by your age, but when your gift appears, since that marks your mandatory enrollment in the academy. However, it is very rare for someone's gift to manifest so late, but it does happen. Similarly, someone's gift may manifest well before puberty, but again, both cases are extremely rare and someone whose gift manifests as a baby, for example, would be sent somewhere else. For this RP, a character's age should be between 13-20. Generally, you will find most 1st-4th years within the 13-16 age range, while 5th-8th years are generally within the 16-20 age range, though this is not a hard and fast rule, just the norm for most students.


Excellent, that works pretty well with both ideas I had in mind and gives me a bit of a better idea on how to work things.

Both of your character concepts would work; I think it's moreso a matter of which one you would find more interesting to write about as the story unfolds. :) Your gift concept sounds interesting, probably an Astra, though I don't exactly get how it works exactly. But that's kind of the point of Astras right? Their powers aren't usually cut and dry. lol I love creative power concepts anyways, so once you write it out in more detail, I'm sure it'll be great. Seems like a character who would absolutely take the Apprenticeship and Support class so they can apprentice for/or provide support to the Artificing and Magi-Tech Advancements Professor.

Okay so, with a bit more thonking involved and reworking some old ideas for the same character, the idea I'm leaning more towards is this. Sixth or Seventh year at most, but right around 20 either way and someone quite specialized in artifice due to her mentor. Workshopping an NPC here, a rather old man who's been around the Academy for #awhile and for a brief time fought in the 72 Year Liberation Wars as Tyren the Boneweaver for his combination of in-depth medical and artifice knowledge, but he's not really inclined to speak about those times simply referring to how he helped put people back together after the war. He's basically teaching Corrine(Just the first name for now for convenience lol) everything he knows about artifice and doing his best to steer her down the path of building and repairing, though she's not even near his level yet. There's more to the relationship between the two, but most I'll say for now is that it was Tyren who brought her to the Academy after putting her back together from a rather traumatic event.

And on the other end of the character, aside from her skill with artifice and love for making her own replacement parts, I was leaning towards the idea of her being older for a bit of a theme I like for this one in particular. That idea being that she's got a bit of a reputation for heroics and taking on rather dangerous missions through the portals. All sorts of rumors about how she's done this and that, how each trip through the portal is some epic saga. In truth, she's an absolute disaster and is winging it. Which is why she's more artifice than person at this point and to those who really know her feel she's more of a bad luck charm than anything. Like, she's almost a magnet for bad stuff lol. But hey, she makes it work somehow.

This is excellent, as I was going to rock a bit of a arcane/magitech gunslinger vibe with Corrine lmao. Also discord is pretty convenient, just to add in from above.

I've got some tentative interest and possible character concept in mind, though some information regarding intended direction would help sway that interest one way or another. One curiousity is how many years of learning before a student graduates, I assume at least 6 considering there are classes denoted as 5th year and up only. Is this like some alternative schooling for those with the gift? Something like a full school course depending on how old someone is? That's kind of the vibe I've been getting.

As for character concept, depending on how long students are intended to be in the academy before graduating I could go two differing directions for the same character. One being a relatively fresh face there to learn about her "gift" and the other intended to be the same character a good few years after adjusting and finding her stride. In either case the idea is someone with a streak of luck that is either incredibly fortunate or unfortunate depending on point of view, and a strong focus on artifice. Particularly the creation of artificial limbs and organs... Primarily to replace the ones she's lost lmao.


For the first time in her life she had been rather late to the party, though in fairness it wasn't exactly her fault. After a few months out cruising the hyperlanes trying to even find the place, she at last had discovered D'qar out in the space boonies of the southern galactic outer rim. Part of her wondered what exactly would drive the Jedi to found a temple out here so far away from the rest of the galaxy, but that was in part what all the reading was for. Matarisvan took the route on autopilot as she browsed through thousands of years of history like any proper university major trying to cram for a test, and her answer was there soon enough. It was kind of hard to reconcile this information with what she had learned in Imperial Academy, as it felt a little odd to see the so-called defenders of justice for millenia suddenly rebel against the Republic. Yet the records for that time were a little sparse, and that man called a Knight told her as much before he had departed to recruit others to his cause. Regardless, she had arrived to begin this new path and see what potential they thought she had.

As it turned out, it led to a few months of studying, meditation and only a little bit of practical skills that she had to work a little harder on since the rest of the initiates had quite a bit more time to have practiced than she did. There was something called a pilgrimage or founding, or she honestly skimmed past the actual name but it sounded really important when it was being presented to her and the others by the masters of the order. Masters or Knights? She was a little unsure of the terminology on who she was working with, other than she had been paired up with someone who was most assuredly not a Republic Ranger and a rather stern but aloof green lady called Knight Reni. No, it was just Reni. Knight was apparently just a title which seemed required only sometimes, she wasn't really sure. All she knew is that Reni wasn't a fan of meat or rations, had a tendency to wander out into the jungles and forests, and was fairly serious about the Republic. Which honestly worked well enough for her, and she didn't mind the rest of that as it didn't hold any bearing to her duty as it was.

So she took the time to catch up best she could with the others as the days turned to weeks and that big journey was closer and closer at hand. At first the whole esoteric nature of the force was a little hard to deal with, considering she had always approached things with a more analytical and scientific approach. That had been how she took a basic aging interceptor and made it a nightmare for pirates, and how she had basically completely rebuilt it from twisted metal. The force though, it was that strange sensation that lingered in the back of her head, was after-images around people in at first vague colors but intensified as she concentrated. It seemed to ebb and flow as she tried to grasp it, responding to her emotions or lack thereof in ways she at first didn't understand. And then, quite suddenly she did. It was during one of Reni's talks of nature and the natural order that she had that epiphany of sorts, questioning if the force was just another natural energy like gravity and told that in a way, it was. The force was an energy that bound all living things, and as Nova thought on that it came to her that clearly that meant there were *rules* to what the force could and could not do, how it would respond to things and so on.

That little breakthrough was enough for her to turn her analytical mind towards understanding more about her own ability and trying to mimic that of others. Telekinesis came first to her finally after being with the Jedi for almost two months, and though shaky and tentative she knew the concept of it now. Sure it wasn't an exact science and there were still principles that she didn't fully understand, but now she knew a bit more of what to look for when she was feeling out her abilities. A bit of experimentation had her momentarily drifting during meditation, and requiring an impromptu trust fall into the waiting arms of Reni, but discovery did require experimentation afterall. And as she discovered more, she could feel the excitement of something new creeping up on her just as it was coming time to anoint her and the others as proper Jedi…


ILUM

The shuttle ride over had been a bit uneventful for a cross-galactic journey. A few long days of her fellow initiates getting to know each other, doing their own independent study or working with their master on various things. For Nova in particular she had spent much of the time practicing with her abilities on what was called a puzzle sphere apparently pulled from within various Jedi temple ruins over the years. It was strangely impervious to physical manipulation, the silver material almost translucent but opaque enough to prevent one from observing directly the ball within. All she needed to do was to guide it from one end to the other, pull the sphere apart with the force and to do it in reverse. To say it was more difficult than it sounded was a bit of an understatement, but she still stuck with it in the spirit of honing her abilities. And when she wasn't working on practical skills, there she was with a datapad and going over various principles she had downloaded from the archives. Something called "Tapas" had been brought up a few times, and she saw it involved some kind of temperature regulating ability through the force, but it felt a bit complicated to her.

Then there were of course some more combat-oriented applications, things such as taking the basic telekinetic abilities and using them offensively. Force push, force pull, telekinetic combat and more. She figured the first two were easy enough, just direct the force in a more intense effect outwards or in a particular direction. That last one though related to the entire reason why they were traveling as a group to a rather desolate and frozen ball out on the opposite edge of the galaxy. To forge a lightsaber, or assemble one, or something like that. There were some conflicting ideas on what it involved, with a few of the others already sporting working models and prototypes that seemed just to need that critical piece. It was a strange weapon, and she only realized where she had seen one before when she felt a familiar energy from one of her fellow initiates, a rather pale woman who didn't seem too keen on associating with the rest of them. The shadowman had one of these, which only made her more curious but that would be a discussion with Reni later she was sure.

For now as the shuttle was making planetfall she was going over some drafts in her design program, leaving just enough space both physically and mathematically for the crystal she was supposed to be gathering from a cave. That was another conversation entirely, but she figured Reni or one of the others might address it. She carefully considered the energy output of her materials, having been provided enough to construct at least one full size lightsaber, but she was entertaining some other ideas. A rather simple design for now, as all prototypes tended to be, she figured she could work a bit more of a focused intensity for a more refined and delicate blade than the normal one. Something called a lightfoil as she had discovered in her reading, apparently popular among the old order's duellists. It looked close enough to be suitable to the traditional arts of her home back on Alsakan, though that would come later. At the moment she felt a pairing weapon would be suitable though it would necessitate another crystal, something she was sure wouldn't be too much of an issue… Though if she needed to attune herself properly to get the approval of one rock, she wasn't quite sure how well it would go finding another.

But all of that would be for later, as she had a firm idea of what she wanted to do and the swirling white of snow and ice from the otherside of the windows let her and the others know they were coming to a landing and there was that reassuring shift of the shuttle's weight as it came to a rest. Now there was the problem most in need of addressing, and it was one she had prepared for well enough thanks to the store-rooms of the temple on D'qar. There had been at least one comment that maybe she was over-reacting, but she had lived her entire life on starships and in stations, coming from a place literally known for their eternal summers. Then again, maybe there was something to be said for this "Tapas" thing. So right behind Reni she padded out just the same, not even thinking about her boots and keeping her datapad in hand. Reni was doing it just fine and actually seemed to be enjoying the weather, barefoot and all. So really all she needed to do was focus on not being cold. Really simple. Just don't be cold. Don't be cold. Don't be cold.

"I have been betrayed."

Almost immediately as soon as she stepped into the snow and ice there was a chill that ran up her spine and nearly lifted her from the ground. Without even a word in passing she turned abruptly and went back into the shuttle, throwing on layer after layer of cold-weather clothing and squeezing herself into two pairs of boots just for added protection. By the time she had finished she took those tentative steps again, heavily bundled up this time and moving with all the grace and alacrity of a disabled tauntaun. But now she felt warm, and with those violet eyes peeking out from beneath the eight rounds of a wool scarf, she trudged up behind the rest of the group.

Righto, I think I'll chalk this one up to me trying to explain poorly an idea through phone and misreading something somehow lol. I'll continue to blame the phone, but it's your show my man, your call. I will go into a little more detail though just in case, as I think the idea could still be viable if I explain a few things a little better.

So basic idea is my elf Serenwynn is of a rather uncommon species of elves called Eiltheryn scattered across the varied realms of the world as it were, and unique in that they fell from the stars at various points in time, hence being called "Star Elves" in common parlance. These Star Elves are universally rather strange, often aloof and mercurial in their ways, but a peaceful and agreeable lot even if the people they interact with are not. As Serenwynn herself would explain, their pacifism is non-negotiable and they will go to extraordinary means in order to keep to this philosophy, but that it is still very much a conscious choice of theirs. Violence for them is simply an abhorrent concept, though the exact reason as to why they have such a stance on it remains staunchly secretive, even against attempts to pierce their minds via magick. Which on that account they are usually fairly magically inclined, though not all would as capable as Serenwynn, in fact her brother Aeronwynn seems quite incapable of conjuring the Astral and delegates his magical skill to lighting candles and other feats of convenience. Those that are capable and have the patience though have all the time to practice, as I was intending to hint about that Serenwynn had been with the caravan for a long time indeed, with even those who had been there the longest noting that she had already been there. That being in part due to the way the Star Elves are biologically immortal. I say biologically very specifically in the way that once they reach a certain age, the aging process ceases and they essentially live until something kills them, either a viral or bacterial infection or someone causing an abrupt end to their life. So to clarify, the Star Elves do get sick and they are just as fragile as your average human or elf, just tend to stick around for a while.

On the magic though, my ideas for it were a bit more complex than simply transportation from one point to another. The idea is that the Astral is something akin to a cosmic energy harnessed by the Star Elves for their magic and can be used as the foundation for your typical schools of magic such as illusion, conjuration and so forth, but most Star Elves would advise strongly against doing so. Reason for that is the same reason why they don't teach it to the "mortal races" anymore, in that tapping into the Astral slowly erodes at the sanity of the user, driving them steadily mad for peering into the beyond and witnessing cosmic forces beyond even their comprehension. It's basically eldritch bullshit, but with an astronomical spin to it.

More specific to the teleportation though, is that while thinking more on it, I would figure it to work as such since it is fueled by cosmic energy. Primarily an Astral Portal cannot be opened between where Serenwynn is and another place if she does not know exactly where that place is, as there is an exceptional risk of fusing with solid material or simply walking into the Astral Sea. In the case of going out and about with the Caravan, I would figure that she would have a place marked with it that she can use as a reference point. A beacon if you will. Secondly, and probably just as important as the first note, is that it takes a decent amount of focus and effort to conjure the portal. So it's not something that can just be whipped up on a whim to go shopping or take people visiting their families. It is probably also not recommended to be trying to make the portal when under direct fire, both literally and figuratively. Thirdly there's a point of risk when traveling through the portal, even for her. Anyone walking the Astral Sea would be influenced by "forces from the beyond", or eldritch bullshit, and so it can not only be incredibly disorientating for normal people to travel, but physically harmful to them. Even for Serenwynn who has experience in it and makes a habit of staring into the Astral Sea it would still be a bit disorientating and not recommended to use if safety can't be guaranteed on the other side. Also probably a pretty good note to leave that one on, Astral magic uses the power of the stars and cosmic energy, so it's not something that can be used underground or indoors, and has reduced potency in darkness.

So yeah, a bit more of a proper explanation on things and I hope that clears some things up for you and perhaps makes the idea a little more amenable. Basically just Welsh Space Elves as mysterious and spooky as they are friendly.
