I can't be the only one who feels patronized when someone calls me "buddy", right?

Word of advice: forums may not be the best place to look for significant others. Met my first girlfriend on a forum, and now I would give my left nut to forget her.

The day hadn't been very exciting after that. Nothing put up as much of a fight as the centipede Warped. But maybe that was for the best. The boots on the ground didn't have the pilots' fancy toys or training. She had to give the average grunt some respect for going up against such deadly opponents with only traditional weaponry. She remained quiet until back to The Horizon, speaking only once she was in front of Yasuda. "Titania, the dance is over."

In a flash of light the Chi-Mechframe collapsed back to its bracelet mode, leaving Norika in the bodysuit from before. She let out a sigh, smiling at Yasuda. "New upgrade worked like a charm, Chiaki," she said. Chiaki smiled back, flashing an A-OK sign with her hands. "Almost felt like I was actually flying."

"Maybe sometime down the line," Chiaki said. "As much as I want to cram every single upgrade in there as possible, time and resources are a limiting factor. That and the general bureaucracy from the brass. If it doesn't benefit them directly, odds are they'll fight tooth and nail unless you can convince them that what you need is absolutely necessary."

"It's the end of the world," Norika huffed. "You'd think they'd quit sitting around with their thumbs up their arses."

"Some things refuse to die. Kind of like someone I know." Chiaki laughed, playfully punching Norika's shoulder. "Go get yourself cleaned up. You've earned it. Plus, I think there's some entrails in your hair."

Norika was disgusted to find that her mechanic friend was absolutely correct. She hadn't noticed in the thick of combat, but her hair was spattered with blood and gore from the Warped. She quickly returned to her quarters, changed out of her bodysuit, and showered until the hot water ran out. Once done she toweled off and dressed in an oversized hoodie and shorts before brushing her hair. She stopped when her stomach audibly growled at her. Norika had been distracted up until now, but she was starving.

She grimaced. That meant going to the mess hall where the others were. Norika sighed. No other choice. Lord, I don't know if You still listen to us down here, she quietly prayed, but if you are, give me the strength to not try to kill any of my fellow Mechframe pilots. Norika took a deep breath and began heading towards the cafeteria.

Norika let out an impressed whistle, nodding in approval. "Helluva shot, Kim," she said over the comms. "Clean kill. Almost feel sorry for the bastard." She shifted her blades into defensive mode. "So we got that freaky human centipede mopped up, and we don't come home with third degree burns. I call that a win-win. Well, a win for me, a win for Kim, and a lose for the creepy-crawly. Where are we needed next?"

Well, I will give you kudos for immediately jumping onto the theme the status bar has decided for you. That's dedication.

Enjoy your stay. Just be careful with the gossip, since mods don't look too kindly on it in the status bar.

...

What? Private messaging? Shit, they don't care if you do it there.

Norika felt a wave of revulsion as the hands shot out towards her. The Warped never ceased to amaze her in new, disgusting ways. She dodged backwards to avoid the grasping hands, batting several aside with her blades that got too close for comfort. "When we get back, I'm taking twenty showers back to back," she muttered. She didn't care if any of the other pilots or command heard.

"Infernus here, do any of you need assistance? Over."

"Titania here," she replied. "We've got the situation under control here. No need to send either of us back to base extra-crispy."

I'm sad to say the RP is dead. Or, shall I say, "extinct".

A wave of disgust ran through Norika. The smell was horrendous. In her time surviving outside the safety of walls and guns, she'd encountered more than one decaying corpse. However the odor this Warped's blood(?) carried was far more pungent. The only thing she could compare it to was if a badger had died in a latrine and rotted for months. However that wasn't the worst part.

Titania's heads-up display flashed a warning. Whatever this substance was, it was toxic as hell, and continued exposure to it could damage the Chi-Mechframe. Duly noted. "Kim, it's targeting you," Norika said over the comms. "Whatever it's shooting out is corrosive. I recommend immediate evasive maneuvers." Her tone was almost emotionless, though the corners of her lips twitched upward.

With the momentary distraction provided by the shift in attention she took advantage of the situation. Norika dove towards the Warped at high speeds, as if to crash headlong into it. However at the last moment, she moved aside, raising her blade to rake the side of the monster. The cut wasn't deep, but odds are it would hurt like hell. "Come on, you bastard! I'm the one you want!"

A chill ran up Norika's spine, and she scowled. The big bastard wouldn't be laughing for long. "Copy that, Kim. Good hunting." With a single thought, the blades on Titania's arms switched to offensive mode. The Chi-Mechframe's heads-up display was keeping up with the freak's movements despite all that was going on.

She lunged forward blades-first, lines of blue light beginning to glow along Titania's frame as she prepared an attack. Priority one: neutralize the enemy's reach. Easier said than done when an enemy had reach like this Warped. But Norika was more than happy to separate those arms from the freak's body. She crossed the blades in an X shape, and the glow emanating from her suit grew brighter. "Titania! Fairy Dance!" Her body began moving faster. Each movement had a deadly grace, and every swing of her blades either deflected an attack or severed a limb.

"Merde!" Norika dodged the debris, though she was pelted by some smaller chunks of concrete. She growled and cursed under her breath, "Ta mère était un hamster!" However the rocks and concrete were the least of her worries. The Warped that burst out of a nearby building wouldn't look out of place in a horror movie, even by Warped standards. She reached for the revolver holstered at her hip--

And realized she'd forgotten it. Norika dodged to the right, muttering a string of curses under her breath. If she slowed down she was going to take a hit, and that wouldn't be the best way to start the mission. She moved to one side, attempting to dodge the massive, centipede-like monster's attack. God, it was ugly. Would have been nice to put a few rounds in its face.

Norika wasn't exactly thrilled about the jump, but it had to be done. She followed after Kim, launching herself from the hangar into freefall without a word. She closed her eyes, straightening her body out as the wind whipped her hair. She opened them and scanned the heads-up display. It looked much the same, save for several words pulsing softly in the corner of her vision:
> GLIDER MODULE READY; activate?

She took a breath. "Titania, activate glider module." Norika felt static tingling across her skin. The sensation originated from her back and spread across her body. Though she couldn't see them, six hexagonal wings formed around her shoulders. Immediately she could feel her body slowing from freefall, and she fell in behind Kim, assisted by her visor tagging her signature; unlike the Warped, other Chi-Mechframe pilots showed up as yellow, as opposed to the Warped showing up outlined bright, red-orange.

Her heads-up display soon began painting targets. Norika felt the corners of her lips tug up into a smile. "Quite the warm welcome," Norika commented over the comms. "Kim, are you going to soften them up for me, or am I going in hard and gutting them myself?"

Saved by the bell! Norika made a beeline for her room, quickly changing into her Chi-Mechframe's inner bodysuit underneath her uniform. A quick examination in the mirror showed her hair still in good condition. Appearances mattered, even when the world was going to hell in a handbasket. Once at the Command Room, she snapped a salute to Morrison before standing at ease. Sure, this wasn't a military organization per se, but given the last six months had involved rigorous training in combat to fight a threat hellbent on wiping out humanity, she would attempt to be professional.

She listened and watched silently. Saitama prefecture. Her grandparents had called it home before they'd fled to Tokyo in the wake of the Warped's attacks. It would never be the home they'd once known, but hopefully they could start fresh when the area was liberated. She took a quiet breath.

Norika glanced at Kim, her partner for the assignment. The taller girl specialized in ranged combat, which meant that Norika was going to have to get up close and personal with the Warped. Not that that was a problem. I just don't want a hole where my spine should be. After drinking in the information she saluted again before heading to the hangar. Personnel bustled back and forth, but Norika was looking for one person in particular.

For the first time all day a genuine smile crossed her face. A young woman pored over something on a workbench, fine tools between each finger. "Sorry to interrupt you, Chiaki," said Norika, "but we're heading out."

Yasuda Chiaki was young for someone so closely involved with maintaining the Chi-Mechframes, but she had a knack for them in ways that nobody quite understood. She was the same age as Norika, but a full head taller. Norika couldn't explain why, but she felt at ease around Yasuda. Her life was in the mechanic's hands every time she went out into the field, and that fact had forged a sort of bond between them; in fact, she was the only person Norika would allow to call her by her first name.

Yasuda smiled at Norika. "Too bad. I was hoping to tinker." Yasuda handed to object--a bracelet-- to Norika. "But you'll be glad to know that we've given Titania a bit of an upgrade. Not quite flight, but at the very least you won't need a parachute whenever you drop into combat anymore."

"Good. I don't want a repeat of the Jubjub Incident." Norika shuddered at the thought.

"Oh, come on, it was only a small one. And besides, Titania took the landing pretty well."

"You try dropping the last half-kilometer to Earth without a parachute, then get back to me." Norika took a step back, slipping the bracelet on and crossing her arm over her chest. "Titania! Dance!" A flash of light emanated from the bracelet. Though difficult to see, armor began spreading across her body from the bracelet before the transformation was complete. She took the faceplate off for a brief moment, giving a smile to Yasuda. "I'll try not to damage her too much."

"I'll hold ya to it!"

She replaced the faceplate and made her way through the hangar, her eyes scanning for her partner.
