Hello!
So, my name is Cherrywitch, but call me whatever! (Cherry, Cher, Cherry-kohai, it's pretty open.)
What's your personality? I consider myself fairly laid back, and a lot of people like me for some reason. I'm highly sarcastic and well... Weird. I kid around a lot and love to play. I can be awkward and pretty confusing at times, but I'm very imaginative and friendly! However, I'm sort of a 'dandere.' I'm really shy, even virtually, so you kind of have to come to me first if you want to chat or something. Heh, sorry about that. ^^
What do you like? ANIME. Yes, I am a weeaboo and proud. I'm addicted to anime and especially love the comedy ones. I'm also a gamer chick, and my favorite video game is Mortal Kombat because it was the first I ever played. I also have a strange liking towards mythology, especially from Asia.
How are you roleplay-wise? I am a fandom/fantasy role player for the most part, but will also play futuristic topics if they interest me or dark-themed modern roleplays.
I've been on other rp forums before, so I kind of know the ropes. I'd consider myself an average writer. I write at my worst about four sentences and at my best four paragraphs depending on my mood and what I'm given to respond to. My grammar could be better, but it's pretty decent in my opinion. I play both 1x1 and group, and I'm always open for new roleplays! If you're interested in me joining one, don't be afraid to ask, I won't bite... Maybe just a nibble. :3
Sadly, I can't be on too much, what with real life and all. If I do get on, it should be about 2 hours during school days and twice that on weekends.
(Yes this is my intro post. Did I forget to mention I'm incredibly lazy? Whoops.)
Finally got my onmyouji up for those who needed an example. I left the shikigami part blank in case someone wants to be partnered with her, otherwise I have a shikigami of my own in order.
Name: Niko Kodomo Nicknames: The little one, sunshine girl, Cat/Neko Age: 15 Gender: Female Sexuality: Heterosexual Appearance: A short child at 5’3”, Niko would be easily brushed over if not for her energy. She has long blue-black hair down her back with choppy bangs, it usually appearing a mess because she’s too preoccupied to fix it. Her hair is usually pulled forward to leave room for her staff strapped to her back. Niko has wide hazel eyes, thin black eyebrows and a cute button nose with cute round ears to match. Her lips are fairly thin, and her cheeks are always rosy. Niko is thin herself, as well flat chested (which she is embarrassed about.) Her miko garb is big on her, but she doesn’t seem to mind (except when she trips.)
Previous Onmyouji?: Yes, has been at the shrine for a year. Shikigami: Tsugu the Tanuki Sigil and Location: On the shoulder blade of her left shoulder, a gourd:
Alignment and Fighting Style: Niko is Yang Water, meaning she stays in the back of the group and enhances her other peers abilities. She can boost magical power, summoning ability, and mental stability as well as clear any visual or mental tricks a yokai has cast. Niko can also increase physical attributes, such as giving someone a sudden burst of speed or strength. Because of her alignment, she isn’t a fighter, but can wack yokai on the head if she is left alone. Catalyst: Her staff, nicknamed Accelerator. Team:
History: Niko was a pretty unsuspecting little girl. She had an average middle class family, attended school and got average grades, and basically just lived a normal life. Niko was always curious and fascinated with magic, pretending to be a wizard when she was younger and sneaking into shrines when she was older. She always sad when she didn’t see anything, and returned home empty handed. A little more than a year ago, Niko’s best friend died in a car accident. Heart broken and unable to keep up her usual happy character, Niko ran off into the woods to be alone. She stumbled upon a broken down shrine to some spirit, seemingly abandoned. As she sat down to weep on the cobblestone, she felt a hand on her shoulder. It was the spirit of the shrine with a concerned expression, who knelt down to comfort her. From then on, this shrine spirit became her friend. Niko would visit every night with treats, and even helped clean up the place. But being able to see the spirit of the shrine meant she could see others, and they knew she could see them. Niko was attacked by a wild spirit on the way to the shrine one night, her friend making it just in time to protect her. No longer safe on her own, the shrine spirit contracted themselves to her and they joined the nearby Obake shrine to protect Niko. Personality: Nicknamed the “sunshine girl” for a reason, Niko seems to bring light and joy wherever she goes. She can be a bit of a klutz and a pretty big airhead, but she’s one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. Niko is easily frightened and childish in manner, but some say this just makes her that more precious. Niko gets along with most anyone, and will be personally offended if she cannot get to be someone’s friend. She is a very obedient and rule following person who gets anxious around those who like to stray from order. Niko is a very caring and emotional girl, but can almost always be seen with a big goofy grin on her face. She is curious against her own good, and often gets herself into trouble because of her drive for adventure.
”Ah, don’t worry my dear. All is under control. *Glug glug*”
Name: Tsugu (given to him by Niko) Nicknames: The drunkard, the tanuki, the thief Preferred Gender: Male Sexuality: Pansexual lolicon Appearance: A “gentleman” in his late thirties in Appearance, Tsugu just seems like your average drunken wanderer. Somewhat tall at 6’4”, Tsugu has messy blond hair haphazardly braided into a shorter amount with matching dot eyebrows. His purple eyes are a bit droopy in a sleepy look at all times, his lips often curled in a dopey grin. He wears common wanderer clothing in reds, greens, beiges, and black including black mesh fingerless sleeves. He has a straw hat tied around his neck loosely, and giant gourd of sake on his back with the symbol for “tanuki” on it. Most times he will allow his ears and tail to show, but can hide them if he pleased.
Though Tanuki can take on many forms, this is the only other consistant form he portrays. A fluffy little animal, with a white belly and a darker brown tip of his tail. His mask is also a dark brown. In this form he still has his straw hat. Usually he uses this form to be carried easily in Niko’s arms and to attract children to pet him. Shikigami?: Yes Onmyouji: Niko Kodomoppoi Tier: Originally Tier 2, recently raised to Tier Alignment: Yin Wood, Tsugu is a hard hitter. He is somewhat of a tank, with high defense (usually because his pain receptors are so shot due to him always being wasted) and real power behind his punches. Though he is a slow attacker, anything he does land is sure gonna hurt. Sigil:
Powers:
Shapeshifting is a common characteristic of Tanuki, in which they can copy any form they see. However, Tsugu can only copy. He cannot create his own unique appearances besides what his two different forms. He can also change other’s appearances by infusing a leaf with his powers and placing it atop their heads.
Drunken Fist is a martial arts that tanuki have mastered. The more drunk he is, the more invincible he seems to be. You can keep knocking him down but he won’t feel a thing. His attacks are so wobbly that most cannot predict the movements, making it hard to block.
Super strength is as it sounds, but also boosted by alcohol. The more he drinks, the more he can lift. On his normal consumption, Tsugu can move a boulder twice his size without thinking about it. A terrifying drunkard indeed.
History: Tsugu has been a wanderer for hundreds of years, stealing sake from humans and picking food off stands. He was caught one night and had to run off away from store owners he had “borrowed” goods from, finding an abandoned shrine to hide until they were gone. His plans were ruined when a little girl came running towards the shrine, causing the tanuki to squeak and hide. Tsugu won’t admit that he was worried for little Niko when he saw she was alone and crying, but he did go out to comfort her. He offered her a cup of stolen sake, to which she giggled and said she couldn’t drink. The little Niko kept coming back. Tsugu couldn’t bring himself to leave, knowing she would be heartbroken. So he sat every night and all day waiting for her and her treats. She even gave him the nickname “Tsugu” because he was always pouring himself more sake. Then, she was late. Really late. Tsugu went out into the woods and found her being attacked by a Black Dog spirit. With one swift swipe, the dog was smacked hard into a tree and ran off whimpering. Tsugu went with Niko to the Obake shrine after placing his sigil on the back of her shoulder, becoming her shikigami. Personality: A very calm and relaxed fellow, Tsugu is the kind of person to go with the flow. Very charming and amiable, he gets along with most, especially over a good few cups of sake (or in his case, a few bottles.) He’s very kind and gentle, but can be quite passive aggressive and snarky. Tsugu is a trickster and likes to play mental games with people, tending most to pester the dog spirit Inugami. He’s usually seem very relaxed and sometimes even sleeping with his gourd of sake on his belly. Like other tanuki, Tsugu is an entertainer and if you’re lucky, he may even play his belly drum for you. He can be a thief, and if you leave anything he wants out you can bet it won’t be there when you come back for it. Other: Has a... vague interest in little girls.
@Sho Minazuki shikigami*, and I’m more going on the idea that many priests and exorcists were Onmyouji as was believed years ago. Shintoism originally derived many practices from Taoism, including onmyodo. Im going by this as my main reference.
NPCs can be controlled by anyone, but I mostly would be controlling them just for the sake of the role play and giving out missions.
A calm and gentle woman, the head priestess Hikari is a well respected and loved woman. A powerful onmyouji of Yang Wood, Hikari can heal many diseases and injuries, considered a miracle worker. She is the only onmyouji in the shrine with enough magical power to be contracted to a Tier 4 shikigami.
The shikigami of Hikari, Inugami’s personality reflects his alignment in Yin Fire. He is a fiery spirit, though undoubtedly loyal to his Onmyouji. He is respectful, but easily embarrassed and angered. Like most Inugami, he does not get along well with Tanuki or Kitsune.
In the modern world, if someone spoke about evil spirits and conjuring out in the open, people would most likely send them to a mental hospital. The occult isn’t something publicized or celebrated, in some places it’s even forbidden, and yet the ideas of the supernatural have struggled on throughout the years.
Simply look to the Japanese shrines for proof. These buildings have been standing for hundreds of years, and are still visited on the daily. Right by your home in the growing city of Kokona, there is one in particular that gets the most hushed talk among peers. It is said that the shrine, known as the Obake Shrine, is a dimension which connects this world to that of the dead. Rumors have it that the gentle woman who is the leader of the shrine is an onmyoji, as well as all of the shamans and priestesses below her.
Disbelieving this, you decide to investigate. Late at night, you trespass into the Obake shrine. As soon as you pass through a peculiar looking torii gate guarding the back entrance, you have signed yourself down to never go back to your old life ever again.
This is a lighthearted role play about the lives of Onmyouji in the modern world. The players belong to the Obake shrine, and every night they go out hunting the evil spirits which plague the city of Kokona. Some exorcisms are requests, others they track down on their own, but every day holds something new. They are a wacky and colorful crew, but they get their jobs done!
In this world, there are spirits or yokai which dwell within the same realm as our own. It just so happens that most people aren’t able to see them, so they believe it does not affect them or isn’t real, such as you were.
But there are a few who are able to open their third eye and gaze into the world of yokai. These yokai come in all forms, so we documented them below into classes to make it easier.
Tier 1, the Common Yokai: Usually of smaller size, common yokai are tricksters. If they are ‘evil’, they often cause mischief in human lives or bring bad fortune. If your ice cream cone spilt for no reason or you suddenly get a case of the blues, you can blame it on a tier 1. Those who do not meddle often keep to themselves and will only cause trouble if pestered. They are harmless and have little to no magical power, but can be annoying. Really anyone can shoo them away. Examples are imps, will o the wisps, and kappa.
Tier 2, the Lost Yokai: These spirits are often the ones you’d find haunting a home. Lost Yokai are spirits who most often had a tragic death, and are stuck in the past unready to move on. You’ll see them pacing the same area over and over, sometimes repeating the same act with sullen expressions. These yokai can be a bit more dangerous and have a slightly better control over magic, usually using it to levitate or move objects. Usually can have up to two forms. They are more violent than Tier 1, and sometimes require an exorcism. Examples would be azukiari, or yurei.
Tier 3, the Myth Yokai These are the spirits of higher magical power, and the most popular in modern day culture. Most have multiple forms, but cannot later their appearances too far from from their true forms and cannot keep up the form for long. Myth yokai almost always tend to meddle in human affairs, whether it be good or bad. Examples are kitsune with <4 tails, tanuki and tengu.
Tier 4, the Divine Yokai Mistakenly believed to always be bad, divine yokai can take either end of the spectrum. Most prefer solidarity, and will only attack if someone mistakenly trespasses. Divine yokai can be of any size, and many can actually change their form at will. These always require an exorcism, and can be fatal if not dealt with as an evil spirit. They have seemingly boundless spiritual power and are masters in magic. Examples include kitsune with 5+ tails, Umibozu and gashadokuro.
Those who see these spirits are called “mediums,” and an even rarer group can befriend and contract a yokai as their guardian. Onmyouji are summoners who become contracted with a yokai, contracted yokai known as shikigami. An Onmyouji will attract a spirit of their magical level. Those with higher spiritual energy can tame higher tiered yokai, and thus have a stronger shikigami. Onmyouji grow with their shikigami, usually only able to be contracted to one at a time. Though having two has been heard of, it is unbelievably rare. Though a shikigami may start at a low tier, they can raise it by working hard with their onmyouji. If the summoner’s magic grows, so does their shikigami!
The soul contract is formed when a yokai bestows their trust in you, and puts a mark on your body as their summoner. This is a sigil, each one a unique thumbprint of each yokai. The higher tiered a yokai, the more complex the sigil will be. This sigil doubles as their summoning circle, used to call shikigami to your side wherever you may be. More powerful shikigami will be able to teleport to you without you even needing to call them!
But, do not despair. As an onmyouji, you have your own powers to defend yourself if your shikigami is away, called onmyodo. Granted, you need a catalyst to use any magic, and it is quite draining, but it will keep you alive in a tough spot. Your catalyst can be any magically imbued item, such as a necklace or staff. Without your catalyst, you cannot cast!
Your powers cone from within. Everyone is born with an alignment, including yokai. Your Shikigami most likely will match your alignment, or be complimentary. Alignments are split into two coexisting spheres.
The first sphere is of yin and yang. Those born under the yin alignment are destroyers. These are born fighters, and are based in physical attack. They are effective in combat, but their summoning ability and exorcism is low. Those born under yang are purifiers. They rid the areas of miasmas and are effective exorcists, which comes incredibly handy with trickier yokai. Though they aren’t spellcasters, give them a paper and ink and they will create unstoppable ofuda. Neither yin or yang can be effective on their own, which is why Onmyouji are sent out in groups of at least three or four.
The second sphere is the elemental. There are five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Wood people are those with a tough skin. If they are Yang, they often are healers. As Yin, they are defenders. Fire people are eccentrics on the field. Yang Fire often use quick spells to weaken the enemy, whilst Yin Fire dart about relying upon their physical prowess. Earth people are balancing. As Yin, they will level out the fields and act as any form needed. Yang will use spells such as those that reflect damage. Earth are generally wild cards that do not fit any mold of fighting style perfectly. Metal people finish the job so to speak. Yin metal will be the ones to deliver the final blow, whereas Yang metal will finally exorcise the yokai. Water people are generally support. Yin Water will create spells to push back or disorient the enemy, where Yang Water will increase their allies abilities.
In general, this is how the elements interact. Wood fuels Fire, Fire fuels Earth, Earth fuels Metal, Metal Fuels Water, and Water fuels Wood. These help to determine who would work best together on a team.
However, elements also contradict. Wood hurts Earth, Earth hurts Water, Water hurts Fire, Fire hurts Metal, and Metal hurts Wood. This shows who would be most effective against what yokai, however putting these together in a team spells disaster. If you read all of this, put at the bottom of your form “Pardon my”.
Note: Not all information is 100% accurate, as it has been adapted to fit a role play structure.
Hear the chorus of sighing I know, I know. But they’re important, okay?
Dont be rude. No one likes that guy. If you have something to say, say it politely and avoid snide remarks. If you’re feeling annoyed, pm me about it first so I can be a mediator. DO NOT fight in the OOC. I will get pissy. Don’t.
Follow standards. You know the drill. All site rules apply, fade to black if it gets hot (please don’t insinuate anything if they are underage), don’t god mod yadda yadda yadda. I don’t mind cursing, but don’t swear like a drunken sailor if you could. Avoid all text talk in the actual IC, and try to post one to two paragraphs. I understand writers block, but lemme know. Same goes if you are going to be gone for an extended time. I will drop you if you are gone for a week without saying anything.
Have fun! This is supposed to be a lighthearted, comedic and action packed adventure. Don’t be too dark or dramatic and keep it enjoyable for everyone!
I can edit these rules, so watch out mister or mistress. If you read all of that, add “spirits” to the end of the previous key phrase.
Can non-Japanese myth and spirits be used? Yes of course! If it’s something obscure, I’d like a link to a little blurb about your species however. Can I have multiple characters? Yes you may! As many as you can handle. Can I use my own form/make it pretty? Go ahead, as long as you keep all the information. Can I play my own shikigami and onmyouji pair? I encourage it. It can get messy with two players having to work together. That being said, being in a partnership with another player is fine too. Help! I wanna be a shikigami, but I have no Onmyouji! Calm down! Just leave your “onmyouji” section blank until someone fills it, and we’ll “ghost” your Onmyouji until then. Can my character be possessed/already be a medium/etc.? Character creation has a lot of freedom here. If it fits, I’ll most likely accept it. If you’re still unsure, just shoot me a pm!
