Abilities
Remarkable Hunter - Being taught to be a hunter from his youth on, he had to develop many skills amidst growing up but there were some things he was simply born with. Just as his name translates to, Kohana is quite "swift". Whether it be chasing down or running away, you wouldn't want to be on the opposing side of this kid on foot. Along with that, while he is no Paul Bunyan, he's no pushover in terms of muscle either. Though, that isn't to say that he is only a human Pronghorn. He is also a very quick learner and quick thinker. He can set traps on the fly with very limited materials, track any sort of living creature through a couple of different means, and can keep a cool head under pressure.
Natural Connection - Due to it being his primary profession, as well as a key of his culture, Kohana has studied and understands the behaviors of the natural world beyond the tracks, stations, and towns. He knows about many different forms of wildlife, their eating habits, territories, which are sick or injured, and how to act around them in stressful situations. This would also enable him the ability to even tame such creatures for a time to do what he wishes of them. He can mimic their movements down to a science and some have even claimed that no other has ever come closer to becoming one than he. It is said that it has something to do with his ancestors as to why he's so good with the creatures, but who knows...?
Can Hold A Tune - When it isn't quite hunting season, Kohana does at times go to the market place to purchase a small guitar. With that, he often plays music as a sort of entertainment in saloons and such as a form of sustenance. He has tried other instruments in the past, but the guitar seems to be his main specialty.
Weaving/Sewing - Although not quite the most 'manly' skill in his bag of tricks, it is something that he managed to pick up to at least patch-up his damaged clothing, or craft more when necessary.
The Story
Kohana was born into a nomadic tribe of hunter gatherers that generally avoided the Steamholt Transportation system. Instead they were more of a people that kept to themselves, following the differing herds of animals and managing to survive in the wild lands. It was a life where the strong survived, and Kohana was raised to be so. Further, he was the son of the Chief, and as such, he was often the one that had to lead the example for the other young boys of the tribe.
Yet, despite being all that he knew, he felt that there was a piece missing in his life. That there was perhaps a feeling more than surviving. Of course, he could not go to his father with such beliefs, so his mother often heard of his musings while his father was busy. Realizing there was potential in her son to be able to one day be something more, she told him of her childhood dreams about what it would be like to be a Rider...
Eventually, push came to shove, and at the great age of sixteen, he managed to work his way into a town. Refining his skills that he learned from his youth on, he managed to take care of himself for the most part with help from friends here and there. It was some time after this, that he had managed to gain friendship with the town's Sheriff. It wasn't always that way, as the boy was a bit troublesome with being a "Wild Boy of the Savage Lands", laws weren't exactly important out there.
Still, Kohana helped the Sheriff deal with a raid in which a band of outlaws were trying to rob the town's water supply. It took a combined measure of their wit and skills, but they managed to pull it off. As a form of reward and a gesture of kindness, the Sheriff told him more about the railways and gave him some of the means so as to be able to ride the trains. With a heavy heart, the Wild Boy did leave what could be considered his 'hometown' to follow on in his mother's dream for him.
There was always a tug of curiosity and amazement that the 'unknown' brought to him, and when he first arrived at a station it seemed to click. The gigantic metal beast on the tracks. He heard stories of far away lands, farther than he had ever gone before.
Kohana was raised to move forward, so, he did.
Quirks
Kohana collects at least one little trinket from every animal he has hunted and killed. Each one has a story.
He's real protective of that canteen he carries around. There are some inscriptions written on it, but the lad won't translate what exactly it means. It is very heavy, implying that it is full of something and he does seem to hold onto it with some care, but it is difficult to tell if it is full of water or not.
He's only ever gotten his hair cut once but other than that, never.
He has a thing against using firearms, he won't tell why, but it's generally assumed that it just had something to do with his upbringing.
