Showcase:
"A million times I have done this charade. The moment people figure it out, I get the boot." she thought.
"But don't you want to see the fear in their eyes when they see who you really are...? Don't you want dominion of this place, just like how you were unchallenged in Vaal Kastrix?" said the Voice.
Ciara scoffed, immediately thinking of Gulliver and Valen. "I'd love to wipe the smirk off their faces."
"It starts by building a rumor. A rumor of power. This could be the place to start."
She took a deep breath, narrowing her eyes resolutely at the Undermage. "Head Advisor, with all due respect, you have no right to ask me about my intentions. If you want answers..."
She stood from her seat, rising to her full height.
Her breath caught when she felt the cold metal of a pistol against her temple.
"Put the heart down, and back the hell up if you want your friend to live," the guard said to Ellie in a rumbling baritone, digging the gun into Dream's head.
Dream squinted at Ellie, vision blurred as she tried to breathe. The heart, glinting in Ellie's hands.
The doctor, his face turning white every time she asked what would happen if they failed. Above all else, he said, they had to keep the heart safe. They had to, even if it meant...
She snarled, her boot stamping down on the guard's foot, a burst of light bruising the bone. He yelped, losing his grip. That's all she needed, and she tore away. But in her haste, she saw his free arm reaching for her, and she slipped on panicked feet as he pushed her off the railing.
She held back a scream, staring straight down into the boiling pit below. The guard wrapped a tight hand around her ankle, and Ellie could see Dream's other foot flailing; she restrained herself poorly from kicking the guard, desperately hoping she wouldn't die.
As her captor supported himself against the railing, his pistol pointed at Ellie.
Deep, golden orbs stared back at her from within the cave.
God, she couldn't breathe.
He was monstrous. The ground trembled under her feet as his rippling, massive body exited the cave. Thunderous footsteps left cracks in the dirt, his breath sent waves of heat creeping over her skin. The transformation was slow, but it looked like something from a nightmare with the way his long teeth were bared.
A great and terrible roar sounded from his gaping maw.
Yeah! I was going to ask if there’s a lifespan expectancy for fey/changelings but for her ‘disguise’ I was thinking 20s-30s, especially if we’re going the route of scandal. If she was going to become the new duchess or something, I was probably gonna say 40s :P
(DND has them at 450 yrs)
Yeah, we can make Changlungs have a lifespan of 450 years. That goes in keeping with the other races I have so far.
<Snipped quote by ERode>
Right, but there was still some sort of warring going on if he had to take Aethera by surprise.
ERode has it pretty much right. King Ludwig II preferred to do things peacefully, using the power of his army to quell anymore fighting by more intimidation, and offering good peace treaties. Aethera and Rockhold were the most stubborn, but it was only Aethera that had a full scale invasion of the city done by the King.
Oooh, that’s an important clarification you just made, useful for everyone here, not just me.
If that’s the design principle behind offensive spells, then sure! My point essentially remains the same, Vacuum and Void are as powerful as a Firebolt and Fireball respectively, yep.
Great! Then I think your CS is good to go! Feel free to add it to the Character Tab when you have a moment. :)
I’d like to join! I can have my character basics done before the end of the day if not the whole character sheet :)
Hello! Yes, you're more than welcome, I'm looking forward to your CS. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :) We are starting the IC this Friday, so you have lots of time.
<Snipped quote by Estylwen> Thanks! For the glade's location, since Lilim are fey-touched people, then... this should be a good spot, near the Fey River.
Oh, that's a good point, hmmm... then I'll add a line or two clarifying that Vacuum and Void have similar destructive power as the Firebolt and Fireball spell respectively. For example: If a certain person would die from receiving a Vacuum to the face, then they'll also die from receiving a Firebolt to the face. Sounds good?
Hmm, I'm trying to make spells not an insta-death. Is there any way the vacuum could be an impacting blow that's non-lethal? A fireball to the face would leave severe burns, but not necessarily kill a person. Does that sound alright?
<Snipped quote by ERode>
Nah, it's more like, the guy receives the same bludgeoning force as the insect. That amount of force would be enough to kill the insect, but no more than a prod for the guy.
Good point tho, probably should be more specific on the wording.
Thanks for the clarification!
I've updated the map, it can be viewed here:
Every 7-9 squares is about a day's journey by carriage.
Yes your suggestions still work for me, I might just go with the surviving royal guard, only that he was severely wounded during the conflict, and after he healed, he chose not to join the queen's royal guard but still has friends in the guard and court, and has since retired to his family's estate and thinking of ways to end the queen's rule and avenge the king. Maybe making a spy network.
Unless I think of something else.
This idea would work great, I say go for it. I'm looking forward to your CS!
Goal: Firstly, driven by a sense of loyalty to her mother, Matriarch Jezebel Tearmoon, and the coven she belongs to, Melisande strives to realize her ambitions of exerting the coven's control over the Glasic Fields by whatever means most convenient, whether through supporting the Wizard Queen or the Duke of Rhinecliff. Secondly, motivated by gratitude to the Dremora of Time, Kronos, who dwells within her, she wishes to search for a way to separate their conjoined souls so it can return to the Shade from whence it came. Thirdly, above all, she wishes to enjoy everything life has to offer before her borrowed time finally ends, whenever it'll be.
History:
The Lilim, a curious race of monogendered people; beautiful, physically delicate, and magically talented, these all-female sapients were said to have descended from ancient nymphs intermarrying with humans and elves. Regardless of the truth, it's clear that the mystical influence of the fey realm runs strong in them, which would indeed explain their peculiar traits. Then, the Dremora, shadowy creatures hailing from the Shade, dreaded and mysterious, they're a subject of innumerable stories and legends, malevolent anathema to the All-Force itself.
One might ask, what if a pair of Lilim and Dremora are forced to coexist? Melisande's very existence is a representation of such a concept.
Born as the first child of the current matriarch - leader - of the Tearmoon lilim coven, Melisande's struggle began right after she left her mother's womb. A sickly infant, the girl's early years were spent mostly bedridden and confined in her room, and even the best of the coven's healers were unable to cure her ailments, it was as if her fate had been set in stone, that she was to suffer through a short life of agony before she'd waste away into an eternal sleep. Something that the matriarch found unacceptable, her beloved daughter would live... by any means necessary.
After exhausting almost every option, Jezebel turned to the forbidden, in place of the so-called benevolent All-Force who couldn't save her daughter, she'd instead embrace the dark gifts of the Shade. Delving into eldritch knowledge was quite achievable for a Lilim of her stature, thus after no small amount of research, the coven matriarch prepared a ritual, one that would summon a dremora from the Shade and use its unlife-force to immortalize her child.
The ritual... succeeded, Jezebel summoned a creature of timeless existence and infused it into Melisande, freezing the progression of the child's affliction. However, meddling with the shade had its price, there'd always be a catch, and in this case, it's the harrowing fact that the otherworldly creature didn't quite disappear, instead its consciousness melded with Melisande's, practically turning them into a conjoined twin sharing a single body. Still, Jezebel deemed that it was worth it.
...and so did Melisande, as she grew up, she learned to coexist with her "twin", her 'other self', one she named Kronos. As for Kronos, it was resentful at first, being imprisoned in someone else's body, but due to the combination of Melisande's warm friendliness, its own curiosity about the material plane, and last but not least, the promise of one day being able to be separated and return home, it grew to tolerate its new life, one might say it might've grown fond of Melisande, though it'll never admit it.
At the tender age of sixteen summers, Melisande qualified for a scholarship from the Society of Young Magic to attend Hathforth Academy. There, she could hone her power over chronomancy, the arcane art of space-time and causality manipulation, using the best resources and tutelage the academy could offer. In addition, her mother tasked her with gathering any information that'd help the Tearmoon coven to rule over the Glasic Fields and obtain exclusive authorization to manage it, essentially supplanting the Royal Gardeners, but no one needs to know that... at least not before it’s appropriate to whisk the curtains.
Seed:Gemini - Melisande's Seed takes the form of a gem-encrusted golden star-shaped brooch. Perfectly symmetrical from the vertical axis, Gemini's primary function is to manipulate the fabric of space-time to conjure an identical copy of Melisande's body, including her current apparel, and either Kronos or Melisande herself can focus their consciousness to control said copy, which practically allows the twins to have a separate body each. The clone continuously consumes mana to maintain its existence and when dispelled through one reason or another, it'll simply vanish into fleeting motes of pure mana.
Magic:
❖ Swift: Enchants a target with magical vigor, allowing them to perform actions quicker. ❖ Slow: Hexes a target with arcane malady, hindering their movements. ❖ Hasten: Accelerates the progression of an effect, for example, an antidote that'd need several minutes to fully take effect can be manipulated into a single minute. ❖ Hinder: Impedes the progression of an effect, for example, a venom that'd have taken a minute to kill can be delayed to several minutes. ❖ Blink: Manipulates space-time to instantly change the caster's location to another location within sight or a maximum of several meters, whichever is closer. ❖ Reflect: Conjures a barrier that can reverse the trajectory of mundane projectiles, unable to affect magical projectiles. ❖ Vacuum: Generate a localized implosion at a designated point in space, damaging anything within that space with pure force. The size of each implosion can be no larger than an apple. --- ❖ Dimension Door: Connects two separate points of space within sight via a portal, enabling nigh-instantaneous travel between the two. If a portal closes while something is traveling through it, then the subject will either be wholly ejected into one end or if impossible due to one reason or another, severed in two. Can only conjure a single pair of portals simultaneously. ❖ Fate Bond: Intertwines the strings of causality between two separate individuals. If a bonded creature receives an effect, then the same will be applied to its pair. Can only work on creatures with a soul and no more than a single pair simultaneously. ❖ Void: Basically a larger version of Vacuum, this one can affect a volume of space as large as an adult horse.
Faction:Tearmoon Coven - Melisande is affiliated with the Tearmoon Coven, a society of Lilim (and their husbands or more rarely, wives) under the rule and guidance of the Matriarch, chosen by popular vote upon the death or abdication of her predecessor. While there are multiple covens scattered across the world, including Arrowfell, the Tearmoons are the most prominent among them. They're a little over a thousand members strong and host some of the best arcane practitioners in the region.
City:Tearmoon Glade - The patch of land dominated by meadows and rolling hills that the coven claimed as their ancestral home, dating back to centuries old. Though they're mostly self-sufficient due to the Lilim's talents in the arcane, they aren't xenophobic, in fact, it's the exact opposite. Due to how their race propagates, a Lilim can only bear Lilim daughters and as such, they need men of other races to take in as consorts.
Though each coven may differ in their culture and norms, Tearmoons in particular endorse Lilim-focused polygamy in that a Lilim is allowed to have multiple husbands (and/or wives, though husbands are preferred) and they do not acknowledge adultery if a husband or wife of a non-Lilim decides to marry one. The latter in particular is quite a controversial practice amongst outsiders as the Lilim's propensity for alluring comeliness means it's quite common for a married person to be tempted to elope on their spouse with a coven member.
In Tearmoon, only Lilim can become full-fledged coven members and they all share the same surname, which is the coven's name. People of other races need to be espoused to a member to be allowed to live within their enclave. Members who have come of age are encouraged to venture out of the glade, both to gather life experience and find a potential spouse to bring back to the coven.
Aside from providing services related to magic and alchemy, causing marital problems to non-Lilim women and men, and generally functioning as a self-sufficient enclave, the coven maintains neutrality in political affairs... until the Glasic Fields' sudden introduction into the region. Standing at the foremost of this newfound ambition is Matriarch Jezebel and her appointed agent, Melisande.
Assets: Arcane services, alchemical products, and... a popular emigration destination for individuals (mostly men) preferring an easy, docile life as a consort.
I love your CS! The inclusion of Dremora is right on point. Do you have a way to point out on the map where you would like Tearmoon Glade to reside? Or you can tell me how many day's travel it is from Hathforth, and in which direction, and I can add it.
I only have a slight issue with the spells. Vacuum and Void sound like instant-kill spells if positioned at the head. How strong is the force? Is there a way we can make it so it's not instant-kill?
Alrighty Image up finally, didn't really find something I wanted so took something that was okay
That does clear up a lot! To clarify though, the satellite settlements surrounding a city don't send their taxes to their respective cities, but right up to Hathforth, thereby depriving the dukes of a large part of their own taxes?
You got a point there. Thinking about it, it's more practical for villages to go to their closest Duke/Duchess with their taxes. Sorry about that! Let's go with more dependence on the Duke/Duchess instead.
<Snipped quote>
Following up on this, would the anti-magic Seed just delete stuff like magical contracts and Dremona gates then?
Good question. Anti-magic seeds would be able to cancel out a magical contract that was in the process, but wouldn't be able to affect a magical contract already completed. Putting the aura of an anti-magic seed within would collapse a gateway into Dremora's Shade, however, the gateway could be reopened in another location.
That map helps a lot. I'm tempted to place my character's city on that island by Althius...
Is the system in the kingdom a strictly feudal one, with lesser nobles under the dukes and duchesses? What would the territorial extent of a duke or duchess be? I'm assuming the city is just the seat of power, but how much of the surrounding land and villages does the average one hold?
You're right. I have the hierarchy set up with the Wizard Queen presiding over the province, and Dukes/Duchesses presiding over their cities, with viscounts and barons having lesser power in those cities, paying respects to both the Duke/Duchess and the Queen. I would say the Duke/Duchess is almost like a petty king/queen, or like a jarl. The main difference being in Arrowfell that the Dukes/Duchesses are expected to attend court when the Queen calls them, and the cities are far more connected and controlled, as the Queen likes to keep her cities close, and can feel when a city starts to stray and harbour ill will, as is the case of Odenfield.
The city is the seat of power, and typically presides over the farmland surrounding a city. This can be as far a 1-3 hours of walking distance, depending on the city. Villages usually have a leader or representative that travels to Hathforth to ensures taxes are maintained.
Does that answer your question alright?
Also, the island is a great place to put your city. :)
Heheh.
About to do this to Hathforth.
Hahaha, not if the Wizard Queen has anything to say about it. >:D
Here is the requested map. I will be adding it to the first OOC post for future reference. I can add cities to this as they're created.
Hathforth - Settled on the coast of Arrowfell, Hathforth has access to the rest of the world through its port. This is also where the throne resides at Hathforth Castle.
Glasic Fields - Having come into existence two years ago, the glasic fields are shimmering, expansive fields where crystals grow on small, illuminated plants. Thesecrsytlas are more commonly known as seeds, and are only harvested by Royal Gardeners, directly being shipped to Hathforth.
Odonfield - Known for its hand-crafted cigars and strong presence of the Church, Odonfield is a city rich with opportunities for those thirsty to reap from the many sources of knowledge, like the great Duke’s libraries. As of important note, the Duke of Rhinecliff resides here.
Fey River - Crossing the Fey River isn’t for the weak of heart. There are designated bridges that buffer from most of the effects of this shimmering river, but even then, carriages have been known to disappear entirely when crossing the expansive river. The river is home to all manner of nymphs and fairies with water-affinities.
Athius - Only known by the glow of many lights deep below the surface of the ocean, this location has been marked by explorers. However, technology and magic are not readily available to dive into the water’s depths ad discover what lies here.
Rockhold - The city of dwarves, the strength of Arrowfell. Rockhold is cut into the side of a mountain, chiseld away after hundreds of years, giving way to the stalwart determination of the residents who live here. Rockhold is mainly known for its iron and silver exports.
Shimmering Lake - Legend says that when the sun hits the waves just right, and an explosion of rainbow takes over the face of the lake, the door is open, revealing a treasure coveted by all.
Aethera - The ancestral home of the elves, and at one point was a place fo great strength. Aethera caused many tides to turn in the civil war, their battle prowess being hard to match. However, it was when King Ludwig II used clever tactics to take the city by surprise did Aethera surrender, and an era of peace was ushered in. Aethera, in this age of peace, is struggling to find their power and voice among the humans. Aethera is known for its enchanted weapons and armour.
Nordor - Nordor is home to a mainly human population, with an aversion to outsiders. They have their own farmland, and so mainly stay self-sufficient in most circumstances, doing a little trade with the other cities for specialties. Nordor is known for its unique Gold-touch Wine, which causes pleasant dreams in the drinker after any amount is consumed.
I'm also in the process of creating a few NPC sheets, which I should have ready tomorrow. :)
