Finally finished editing that transcript. At this point the only person I'm rooting for in this case is the judge.

Bio

I'm a 24 year old college student with a "tragic past" and a series of flunked schools and medical bills. Roleplaying has been my one escape from a harsh reality while growing up, and I really appreciate this site and everyone on it.

I've been on Roleplayer Guild for eight years, going on nine in a few months.

I started roleplaying at 13 on an Invader Zim fan site... I accept my shame and disgrace.

@Avanhelsing Just a few issues that we've noticed with your CS. I’ll put them in bullet point so that you can correct them.

First off, if you could find a picture of someone wearing more clothes, that would be a start. It doesn’t have to be a uniform, but just wearing more in general would be much better.

Next up, there’s a problem with how he gets to St. Fortuna’s. First off, this is one of the oldest and most famous schools in the country, so most everyone who lives in Prydain has heard of it. Next off, they do not invite you to join them. This is a very exclusive private school that only takes 5,000 students at any given time. You must apply to the school and pay tuition to attend.

As your character is not of a wealthy or even middle class background, he would be unable to pay the tuition. St. Fortuna’s does offer scholarships, however, you have to show outstanding academic scores and keep up with the curriculum, as falling on academic probation easily leads to expulsion.

In addition, the school is very, VERY picky about keeping a clean record. Criminal activities of any sort would not be allowed at all, and anyone with a criminal record would be refused entry. Thievery, fights, and underage working would get you off of the list faster than the speed of light.

In order to fix these issues, I would suggest finding a picture that has a shirt on it, fixing the back story to either give him more intelligence and drive to be at the school or make him of a better financial background, and remove the thievery and fight-club backstory entirely.

After these changes are made, we would be happy to review your quiz and accept you. :)
Is there still room here? I saw the interest check had quite a few people haha

Of course! We have room for quite a few people. ^^
@Invader Len

Want us to fill out the quiz for both Mage and Familiar, or just pick one or the other?

One or the other, whichever one you want your character to be! You could do both if you really wanted, but it wouldn't have any effect on what you get.
@Avanhelsing I'd say at least 1 paragraph for personality, and at least 1 for biography. But it depends on the person, of course. As long as everything is filled out and in order, that will be fine. :)

St. Fortuna's Academy for the Higher Arts

A School for the Magically Gifted

Welcome to St. Fortuna's Academy for the Higher Arts, the best school for the study of magic in all of Prydain! You must be very lucky, or very wealthy, to have been accepted here! St. Fortuna's offers only the finest materials for their students, and their sacramentum-based schooling makes for one of the most successful magic-oriented schools in the world. You're all starting your second year here, correct? That means you'll finally be bonded to your first partner! What an experience! They say that first partners often become life-long friends, some even get married! Bonding is so important to our society and culture, that it's even taught in public schools! Of course, if you want to make the most of this education, the only place to go is St. Fortuna's. Oh, I just know you'll all be so happy here!

There are two kinds of people in the world. Mages and Familiars. Mages are born to a specific type of magic and can cast spells, while Familiars are born without the ability to do magic, but have a special talent called an Ability that is unique to them. Mages and Familiars are not passed through bloodlines. It is completely random who is a Mage and who is a Familiar. A Mage can be born to Familiar parents, and vice versa, or a Mage can be born to Mage parents, and vice versa. It is extremely rare that one family will only made up of Familiars or Mages, and “chains” of uninterrupted generations break quickly.

Because of this, there is no social hierarchy to being born a Mage or a Familiar. There are no hate crimes or magical racism towards either group, because everyone is related to or knows a Mage or a Familiar in some way.

Mages can perform act of magic to the element they are linked to, however, on their own, this magic is very weak. They simply use up magic far too quickly for large, grand, and long-lasting spells. Familiars, however, while being unable to use magic, tend to accumulate vast amounts of it, untapped and with great potential. But this results in the Familiar’s mind and body becoming clouded and strained, too burdened by the energy they cannot remove themselves. To use that magic to it’s full potential, Mages and Familiars form magical contracts that link their souls together. As a result, Mages are able to cast much more powerful spells by tapping into their Familiar’s reservoir of mana, and more powerful and well trained Familiars are highly sought after, and gain power in their own right. The main reason for why Familiars enter into this bond is because all that mana build up results in the inability to use their own ability. Bonding to a mage frees up their ability, making it stronger and easier to use.

Mages and Familiars form contracts with each other that, like most magical contracts, last for exactly 1 year and a day. These contracts require a skilled mage to preside over the ceremony, and both parties receive a seal, placed usually on their hands, that proves their contract. This contract, and the seal, are called sacramentum, meaning oath. As a result, the souls of the two individuals are tightly interwoven, and they share their mana. However, the intertwining of souls also leads to other unintended effects, such as easily influencing each other’s emotions, increased dependency on each other, shared dreams, and, in very rare cases, developmental telepathy. Sharing one’s soul with another is not taken lightly, and bonded pairs are expected to work in perfect unison with each other. This is not always the case, however.

Among the youth, bonding is seen not only as necessary, but as the mark of adulthood. At St. Fortuna’s Academy for the Higher Arts, it is mandatory that all second years be bonded to another student, usually selected by the Council of Educators, who take the student’s Ability and magic types, sex, personalities, backgrounds, and cultures into account to make the most educational and successful pairs possible. In their third year, students are still required to form a sacramentum, however they have the option of choosing their partner. In the fourth and final year, students are not required to form sacramentum, but may if they so choose.

While bonding between Mages and Familiars is an important step for young people in their education and in society, it is not required for adults to be bonded at all. Many who work in trades that don’t rely on magic, such as vendors, bureaucrats, landowners, and those in unskilled labor, are not in contracts at all. However, for those where magic is often used, such as in adventurer’s guilds, artisans, farming, construction, and the study of magic and science, bonding is not only required, but necessary for survival.

At St. Fortuna’s Academy for the Higher Arts, bonded partners share a dormitory that can be separated into two smaller rooms by a sliding wall. They also share a bathroom and shower, and are expected to work out their own schedules and arrangements for their use. This does not exclude bonded pairs where the parties are of opposite genders.

*Please note that St. Fortuna’s Academy for the Higher Arts does not tolerate sexual relationships of any kind on school property, and if a student is found to have been engaging in sexual acts with another student, both will be investigated. Punishments can range from suspension, detention, community service, to immediate expulsion. Any student found to be engaging in sexual misconduct will be detained and handed over to the authorities for a more formal investigation of the matter, and will be immediately expelled from school grounds. In addition, any student charged with sexual misconduct will be barred from attending other institutions of higher learning until such a time where the charges are proven false or are otherwise dismissed.*

St. Fortuna's is a slice-of-life school RP that takes place in the fictional land of Prydain. It's a modern world with all the comforts of the internet age, laptops, cellphones, online shopping, that have developed alongside magic. The school itself is a private school that focuses on magic, and caters mostly to the wealthy and upper middle class. They do offer scholarships to poorer students, but if you fall behind on your grades and wind up on academic probation, you will be expelled.

All characters will be entering their second year of high school at St. Fortuna's, so the age range is between 15-16. (If you can make a good case for why they're older/younger than that in your CS, we might allow it.) Because this is the second year, characters can be returning students or transfer students, the choice is entirely up to the player. All characters will either be a Mage or a Familiar, you can't be both or neither. If you're a Mage, your education will focus primarily on gaining new spells. If you're a Familiar, the discovery and development of your Ability will be the focus of yours.

Because there's a lot to get through to better know your world, school, classes and roles, and this is already a long post, I'll have put all needed information about Familiars, Mages, magic, world, and lore in hiders below. See you on the other side!

Now the hard part is over! For me to write, and for you to read. Now we can get on to the rules, CS formats, and the quizzes you'll take to determine your magic type or ability! We GM's have also gone through this process, so don't worry, you're not alone. When you submit your CS and quiz answers, we will accept you and give you the magic type/ability that the quiz has determined! If your CS requires changes, we may hold off on giving you your magic type/ability until the changes have been made. Once you have received your magic type/ability, you can consider yourself accepted by all the GM's, and may post your CS in the character tab.

And with that, this Opening post is done! Expect it to be updated when the RP starts and as time goes on! With that, have fun!

Alright! Awesome! This is great! We're working on putting together the OOC, organizing our thoughts and coding, but you can expect it to be up sometime tomorrow! In the meantime, we're still open! Lots of space for everybody! ^u^

St. Fortuna's Academy for the Higher Arts

A School for the Magically Gifted

There are two kinds of people in there world. There always have been, and always will be. Those who can use magic, but are constrained by their lack of energy, called Mages. And those who lack magic, but are born with grand reservoirs of magical energy and fantastic, supernatural talents, called Familiars. Though nations rise and fall, rulers come and go, technology advances and becomes obsolete, the balance between Mages and Familiars is eternal, as are their symbiotic bonds.

For centuries, Mages and Familiars have struck up Sacramentum, a contract binding the soul of a Mage and Familiar together. Through the binding of their souls, Mages can tap a Familiar's reservoir of energy and boost the power of their spells, while Familiars benefit by having this energy removed, improving their focus, decreasing their stress, and allowing them a better mastery over their own power, their Ability. This ceremony of binding between Mage and Familiar is so important to our culture, that any magic-centered education would be woefully incomplete without it. Thus, St. Fortuna's Academy for the Higher Arts was founded, so many years ago. And continues to this very day, teaching the younger generations the importance of Sacramentum. Though few use their magic on an intense, day-to-day basis in this modern era, it remains an important part of the curriculum for the citizens of Prydain, for cultural reasons as well as practical.

St. Fortuna's is a magical academy RP set in the modern age, in a magical boarding school in the fictional land of Prydain. It's not your average magical-superpower-school RP though, as magic and powers have a lot of constraints on them that stop people from being overpowered. Players can play either a Mage or a Familiar, and they will get a certain type of magic or a certain Ability. There's another catch to that though, but that comes later.

The students playing Mages and Familiars will then be bonded to each other through magical ceremony, the Sacramentum, and will be learning how to work together with this new symbiosis and improving teamwork. The school highly emphasizes teamwork between a Mage and Familiar, and as a result their grades, rewards, and punishments are all tied together. If your partner gets detention, you have to serve it with them. If your partner gets a low grade, your grade is lowered as a result. If your partner gets good grades and gets privileges to the highly coveted Students Lounge, then so do you.

Mages are born with a type of elemental magic that they can't change at any point in their life. Fire, Water, Metal, Ice, etc... There are 12 magic types in all, each with spells that the students can learn to use and master throughout the year. Familiars are born with an Ability unique to them, one that isn't magical and doesn't require magic to use. Telepathy, night vision, super strength, echolocation, talking to animals and levitation are all examples of an Ability a Familiar might possess. A Familiar only has one Ability, and without being bonded to a Mage, they cannot use it very well. Once a Familiar is bonded, however, it opens up new uses and versatility for their power, and gives them the opportunity to master it.

Now on to the fun stuff. My Co-GMs (onenote and The Errorist) and I have devised 3 prominent game mechanics that we will use in the RP. The first is a point system. Every post a player makes gives them a point, which they can put into one of three stats. Intelligence, Proficiency, and Athletics. These stats are important for players learning new spells, getting good grades, and keeping up in any combat or fitness based scenarios. Doing certain activities can give you a small boost to your points, and you'll want to have enough of them if you want to pass the quarterly examinations, unlock new plot opportunities, and gain new skills.

The next two are tied together. To make things more fun and challenging for everyone involved, players don't get to choose their powers or magic types. We, the GM's, have made a quiz that will help us determine your magic type/power for you, to keep things balanced and give players an opportunity to experiment with magic/powers they might not have ever considered having. You can choose if you want to be a Mage or a Familiar, and even put in what kind of magic/power you would like to have. (We will take that into consideration when we decide your magic/power. We're not complete tyrants. You can even request a different power once, if you really, really, really hate what we've given you. We'll be nice, promise.) If there is an imbalance of mages to familiars or vice versa, we may hold off on allowing new mages/familiars until the balance has been restored.

Lastly, like your power/magic type, we will be choosing your partner. Once a balanced starting group has been reached, we will match you with another player when the IC begins, who will become your partner. They will be your dorm mate, your study buddy, your class partner, and your teammate in combat. All characters will be beginning their second year at the academy, so they'll all be roughly the same age and with the same level of experience. We will be allowing new people to join continuously as the RP goes on, and we have made contingency plans if your partner suddenly drops out or is on hiatus. So no worries in that regard.

There will be a much deeper explanation of the world, the magic system, powers, and the grading system when the OOC is up. (Seriously, we have like 20 pages of this stuff written, we've been very meticulous.) We've decided that there will be a minimum writing requirement of 1,000 characters per post, which would be roughly 2-3 medium sized paragraphs. Once we've gotten some interest, we'll put up the OOC and let people start making characters and taking the quiz. There will be exams to take, contests to win or lose, quests to undergo, and mysteries to solve, all over the course of the school year! We've developed extensive lore and magic that is simple enough to understand, and leaves enough room for players to be creative and experiment.

If you have any questions, onenote, Errorist and I will be happy to clarify. We're looking forward to starting!

I really, really hate watching when veteran players of a certain genre start unnecessarily ganging up on new RPers who don’t know the ropes yet. Like, the level of harshness and rudeness in some of the writing is totally out of proportion to some of the naive errors committed. It makes me really sad, seeing that happen. I mean, we were all new RPers once, or familiar with RPing but new to the site. Is such a level of spite and disrespect really necessary for trivial mistakes we’ve all made at some point in our writing career?

There’s a difference between offering constructive criticism and offering help and advice, and just being an asshole because you can. If someone has the writing skills to be in the casual section, they shouldn’t be told to go back to free because they don’t understand some things about the site’s format and design.

On another note, I also hate when people hijack another person’s interest check by posting their own plot synopsis in it. Like, if you want this plot so much, make your own interest check? Start your own RP? It’s not that hard. Don’t enter someone else’s interest check and start spewing your own advertisements and ideas for how you think their plot should be. Even if the prospective GM is new to the site, that’s just saying that you don’t value their creativity and ideas and that everything should be about you. It’s super disrespectful and it’s undermining the potential GM. And doing it just because they’re new to the site is like, wildly manipulative.

*Disclaimer* None of this happened to me, I’m just a wickedly pissed off observer of some of the shit happening to new players.

-End rant-

Okay, I've posted! Sorry for it taking longer than I promised, my midterms ate up all my time. But they're over now, and I'm free! :D
