After Barracker dealt with two of the wraiths attacking James and Adam, two more were still at large and ready to pounce so Barracker would have to be quick. But then the worst happened, the spectre oil was done and he couldn’t fight the last two. Adam thanked the Paladin and Barracker gave a nod of acknowledgement but felt dread at not being able to stop these last two floating around. Luckily the remaining wraiths had delayed their attack.

He looked around trying to think of what to do and was not happy to see six more wraiths had gotten summoned, zoning in on Fenna’s and Zell’s position. The Paladin had looked over, watching Zell’s spark of genius to deal elemental damage without possessing any magic or alchemy. He simply used his environment, setting his sword aflame to fight on a level playing field with the wraiths. That’s a neat trick, very effective.

Then out of nowhere, Barracker could hear James bellowing a loud prayer. Whatever was about to happen, the Paladin had a good hope when he heard his leader invoke the name of ‘The Mother of all Creation’. "I beseech thee, Mother Iris, thou who are radiant and wise, ruler of the skies and bearer of the sun, Guide us with thy luminous light's gentle sway so that in thy name victory may be attained "

His sword glowed with a new radiance, a blinding light and fiery aura gleamed over the claymore’s massive blade. Glowing Runes appeared imprinted into the Orichalcum, making the weapon look differently in the light. His mood felt brighter and the Vampire smiled to himself, fangs peeking out from between his lips. He felt pumped and thrusted his sword in the air, admiring the flames of light flickering off. Then the entire temple would hear him roar.

‘The gods favour us,” he proclaimed after MacKensie shot down the two ghostly threats near to himself and the magic users. Barracker quickly checked his surroundings around James and Adam before giving the all clear to himself and darting off towards the greater wraith.

"James Sirius has brought down the power of Mother Iris from the heavens and I, Barracker Kassel, come with The Reaper, Hades, from the depths to meet her," he exclaimed at the greater wraith, swinging his fiery claymore and taking out a nearby lesser wraith in the process. "And you shall be caught in the middle!"

With the frontline companions, now all with glowing weapons, they all chipped down the enemies. Even Sil contributed with skillful and precise talons attacks on the enemy. Adam's presence was also felt in the form of smashing trees. The phylactery was destroyed, the Lich fell and the greater wraith retreated to the ceiling and as it did, the Vampire ran up the wall and leapt up as high as he could before kicking off to strike down the greater wraith but missed.

Damn it, he thought as he missed and landed to the floor and continued to fight the lesser wraiths. He killed a wraith and joined everyone else in throwing his main weapon up at the greater wraith. It was a beautiful teamwork attack that saw spear, sword, dagger and anchor flying up in synchronization.
Sil grabbed the spear of the cultist with her talons and pecked at the fingers until they were bloody and unable to hold the weapon. She felt the concentration coming from Fenna and circled back to see what was happening. Sil didn't understand everything about humans, those detachable feathers for instance, they could take them off whenever they pleased, so weird. But she recognised Fenna's gaze, she had locked on a target, much as Sil herself did when she was in the air and spotted a rabit. The wood with the pointy end served as beak or talons, it was what would catch the prey, hovering up there. An upward dive. Sil knew how annoying it was if something came in the path of the dive. She had a bird suddenly fly in front of her once, causing her to lose the rabbit. Another day a leaf had blown in her face. The perfect dive ruined.

Sil has really come along way. You have done a mint job with her. I love to hear her thoughts.

Barracker felt that he, Zell and the rangers had been doing their part in synergy and skillfully taking care of the opposing skeletons and wraiths. Hopefully this would allow more freedom for James and Adam to cast their spells and stay out of danger. He glanced over at the main double doors of the ritual chamber and saw that Adam had not yet found time to barricade them, but there was a lot to do so hopefully he would find the time before reinforcements came.

"Guys! Seek the phylactery, it will be a bitch killing him without destroy-!" Barracker commended his leader’s reaction in blocking the blinding ray, but then realised what he was trying to say.

A phylactery, of course, he is. The necromancer was actually a lich, which was far more dangerous.

"Search the cabinets at the back of the room and destroy its phylactery!" The Cleric once more shouted across the battlefield.

“Affirmative captain,” the Paladin gave a nod and understood what he was looking for. He had seen an empty phylactery in the Main Capital City’s museum browsing the old relics from the Mythic age. Barracker spotted the cabinets he was looking for across the battlefield. “Zell, hold the line”.

He was about to be off but saw Fenna needed assistance. As the sword strike was coming down he rushed over to save his friend and met the blade of blinding light with his claymore, just in reach due to the length of his weapon. A sudden rush of pain shivered through his body, another broken whistling sound coursed through the air. Barracker felt weak to fully block the swinging strike, so he managed to angle the sword away, guiding the blow from landing on Fenna. Once the wraith missed, the Paladin shoved his sword through the wraith's stomach and drew the rest of his strength to cut the wraith, near in half. The necrotic damage lit his muscles on fire, his stomach churned feeling the need to vomit. Barracker flung his mask off, chucking up a large puddle of blood, staining the floor and his chin.

“Fenna, are you alright.” he croaked as he recovered. The vampire was then torn between wraiths popping up from behind where James and Adam where positioned and reinforcements through the main doors. “Looks like we have company,” he offered a hand to Fenna to pull her up to her feet. Then rushed to support James and Adam’s position.

Barracker fought and killed two wraiths, doing his best to ignore the pain still making its presence known from head to toe.

"Hey! Zell, Kass, come here!” James called out.

Barracker made his way over towards the Cleric and MacKensie, arriving as Zell did.

"Yes? Oh fearless leader," the swordsman spoke.

Zell’s smart mouth humour may not have been to everyone’s taste but Barracker was fond of it for obvious reasons. He addressed James, “What do you need?”

“I saw you get a nasty hit and there is no reason to not address it now, they likely know we are here so it's better to be on top of our game"

“I normally wrap myself up after the mission,” Barracker took the bag and started patching himself up with practised ease. The Paladin gave a nod of thanks.

"How many spells you got?" Zell asked. "My shoulder's fucked mate, but to be honest, I'd rather fight left handed if it means you have a spare healing spell for emergencies. Better to have one and not use it, than need one and not have it, ye know what I mean."

Under James’ supervision Zell began patching himself up and Barracker helped out with parts that were difficult to do solo. The Paladin noticed that James was struggling to stand without the help of MacKensie so he passed the medical supplies to her. “Here, hold this?” he asked, then put his leather jerkin and underarmour back on.

Barracker walked away to track down his shield that had smashed entirely through the bookcase giving way to a gaping hole made through. I need to keep an eye on James, he thought as he dislodged the shield from the wall.

As the vampire held his shield, he rotated his shoulders and gave them a stretch. “All set?” He checked with the others before placing his mask on. Everyone followed Adam through the secret entrance, sticking as a unit the party came across their final target. It was floating besides a follower with bodies littering the ground. Barrackers' gut told him he would not be trifled with. Zell was the first to interact with the man who gave an angry retort.

"Well, I feel underappreciated," Zell said drily to Barracker.

Barracker shot a mean smirk back to the swordsman as his pre-battle adrenaline started pumping again. “You know, you should meet my friend Krillen.” He was speaking a bit too casual, considering the circumstances, but Zell’s cool lack of seriousness was rubbing off on him. He looked back at the enemy but continued to speak to the swordsman. “I have a feeling that you two would get along great.”

The wraiths and skeletons that had been summoned advanced on Second Chance. The Paladin got into a duel with the closest wraith, man vs spectre, ghost blade vs claymore. The sound of the clashing weapons was strange, not quite like metal on metal but strangely warped somehow, as if a broken whistle was struggling to blow, over and over. The vampire eventually got the better of his adversary, resulting in the burning and screeching of the wraith. Then he flanked the wraith that was troubling Zell, with Barracker’s movement staying behind, and then ended the threat with a swift, powerful vertical slice. A couple of skeletons zoned in on the Paladin’s position. His shield arm was quick to move to defend against their attacks, and then he rotated himself to meet them.
@Jay009 I was thinking of having Adam block the way also, funny how great minds think alike

Hi Adam, yeah i thought i would reference your old post when Adam said he would do that, it was a good idea.

“Is everyone alright?” Adam called out to everyone.

Barracker appreciated the check in. He gave a salute and bowed his head to the Druid.

"That was quite the surprise, was it not? We thought that we were the ambushers but turned out to be the ambushed. This enemy is clever indeed." Barracker listened to her as he stepped to the nearest body, knelt down and tore part of the robe, to make use of the cloth for later purposes.

As the Paladin rose to his feet, MacKensie shot a look at his chest. "You are hurt. How bad is it?"

Barracker looked at his chest, blood was seeping through the leather. It felt warm to his touch, it did sting a little but the wound would have to wait until after the mission had been done. “Thank you for the concern, I will be alright. I will tend to it after the mission is done.”

As Barracker finished talking to MacKensie, the Druid came over. “Barracker, thank you for that barrier spell. It probably saved my life.”

Barracker felt good he could be of help. “I am glad I could be of use and offer some aid, the battle had very heated moments”. After, he had finished Barracker clasped arms in a warriors embrace with Adam and thanked him in return. The vampire told him how well him and the party did and it was a pleasure to fight alongside the young man.

Barracker thought to himself as he looked around towards the members of Second Chance. this is quite remarkable how each member is advancing with their source crystal abilities, he thought. He had the crystal for years and here they were less than a month in and already close to his level. Each of them will be beyond my capabilities soon enough.

Barracker saw that MacKensie was checking up on James and his wounds. Barracker turned to Adam, “If this secret passage does actually lead to the ritual chamber, get ready with those acorns to bar the doors. It will hopefully prevent enemy reinforcements from arriving”.

Barracker had cut the wraith practically in half, that was attacking James. The wraith fled towards the opposite side of the room, merging into a suit of knights armour. Having the needed space for breathing room, Barracker looked around at his comrades, seen the mess everyone was in and felt like he could see through the madness and see each companion stepping up to the plate. Each of the party doing their own to fend off and keep the leverage of the enemy from turning into a casualty. Generally, the effect that battle had on the Paladin was a sense of calmness, a stillness of emotion you could say, almost detached from the reality of the situation. But it was different this time as he was fighting as part of a team. He did feel an emotion and that was pride.

Barracker slammed the point of his claymore into the wooden floor and dropped to one knee beside James. “Are you alright there, captain?” as the Paladin surveyed James' wounds. They looked pretty bad but Barracker was confident that a cleric could heal himself, now that the immediate danger had passed. He glanced over to Adams position and sore that he too was injured but handling himself well enough, using the barrier for his advantage.

As Barracker turned his attention back to James, he knew by the look on the Clerics face to follow his line of sight over his shoulder, and sore the incoming magical attack, heading their way. Before he could do anything James dealt with the matter quick and swift, shooting the bolts out of the sky with his own light beam attack. He gave a nod of approval, “Thanks.”

"Thanks for the save Kass, but there is no time, the others need your help, go, me and Adam have things under control here" James said as he patted Barracker on the shoulder.

Barracker nodded firmly and rose to his feet, turned, facing the battlefield. Barracker amidst the chaos took his tower shield off his back and realised that, in this battle it would not prove useful. The vampire struck a stance that gave him a wide base, as he wound his shield arm back and then launched his shield with vampiric power. It flew like a discus, towards the fire mage who was attacking the two rangers.

After that he ran towards the action. Fenna was the closest one, but had the spectre oil to help her against the enemy. So he ran straight passed her, to the aid of MacKensie who was helpless against the wraith she was dealing with.

As the Paladin closed the distance, Barracker drove his claymore straight through the wraiths stomach and slammed it into the ground. Then lifted it back up and withdrew the blade, spinning into a three-sixty slash. All the stunned wraith would see is the vampire turn his back for a second before his sword arm would come back around into vision, and before it could even react, the blade would connect, severing the wraith’s head clean from its body.

He clasped forearms with MacKensie in a brief warriors handshake. “How serious are your wounds?” He asked as he looked upon her blood-stained clothes. “Are you able to fight on?”
Hi everyone, just a heads up, if Barracker casts a barrier it lasts for two rounds. So for example like Adam now, he could use the barrier to his advantage against the dark bolts if he wanted to. Hope everyone is well, will posts soon.

Barracker was caught in the middle of a sword strike from the unexpected wraiths that appeared. The sword strike ignored his armour and sent Barracker flying back into a chair, sending him toppling over head first. This was uneasy, his head felt battered and his chest had a warm sensation where the flesh had been torn slightly, as if flayed off his skin, giving way to a deep purple. With the momentum he had, he rolled backwards onto his feet. He looked around to see his party companions and see where they were standing. The wraith never took his eyes off the Paladin as it swooped in with another slashing attack with its ghostly claw this time. Barracker drew his claymore. As the Paladin went for the spectre oil, the chair split into two, leaving Barracker the option of rolling again, circling the wraith waiting for its next move, while popping the vial of spectre oil, quickly soaking the blade. As he finished, the wraith went on the front foot- frontal attack with a combination of sword and claw. The sword was blocked by his claymore but the claw came clamping down on his shoulder, holding the vampire in place while the wraith went for a lethal sword thrust to Barracker’s face. The Paladin stretched his neck to one side, the ghost sword missing his face by a small margin.

Dammit if I’m going to die today, he thought determinedly as the ghost blade passed through his face mask and grazed his cheek.

“James! Adam! I’m on my way,” he called out across the lounge area. The spellcasters were the most vulnerable as they usually require concentration to cast. Also wizards and other classes like that were not known to be defensively agile in the face of swinging swords.

As soon as he could, the vampire dug his claymore into the wraith's arm. Doing this freed him from its grasp and allowed Barracker to get away and close the distance between himself and James and Adam. The spectre oil on his sword left the wraith’s arm mangled with a deep burning wound, screeching as Barracker sprinted towards the wizards. With prayer to Hades, he summoned a magic barrier between Adam and Adam’s wraith, and without stopping he lunged at James wraith and swung a powerful blow.

Barracker led the party from the front, his tower shield and claymore in their usual cross shape on his back. As they entered the temple the Paladin could see a picture of Hades hanging in the entrance block of the temple. He gave a sign of respect to ‘the other side of the cycle of life’ that was his divine patron. There was no sign of any opposition so far. Through the right side door they went. The party was led through a narrow stone corridor, passing the lamps ensconced on the wall. As they took a left, the corridor led on to another door. Barracker lowered his voice telling everyone this is the library up ahead. As they were closing in on the door, Barrackers keen sense of hearing picked up voices on the other side. The Paladin rests a finger to his lips signalling quite, letting them there was danger ahead, before slotting his mask on. Barracker moved through, opening the door slowly and quietly. Seeing that the coast was clear, Barracker led the party into the library and moved stealthily through the aisles of books until they sighted the owners of the voices.

"Take em down quietly?" Zell suggested, which was a good idea. When the swordsman pointed at him, Barracker nodded slightly to show there was understanding behind the faceless mask. "Cover us."

Barracker tailed one of the four cultists, his target on the left side, standing near a bookcase reading. Barracker snuck table to sofa, sofa to table until he was close behind the cultist. He waited, hidden behind cover, for his party to be in position, ready to pull the cultists' feet up from under him, hard enough to yank him almost horizontal in the air. If successful, Barracker would clamp down a choke hold on the man as he came crashing down to the ground.
