Bio

I am experienced roleplayer returning to online roleplay after 10+ year break. I have missed roleplaying and the creative outlet it is for me. I am interested in casual roleplay. I consider myself a decent writer and I will put effort into my writing. I am not into writing a novel for one post though. Descriptive, character building, engaging, yes. I will always write at least 2 paragraphs unless it is a quick fire session revolving around dialogue over private messages. I am a fairly laid back person and don't want to be a grammar nazi. I believe in quality over quantity. Roleplaying is a hobby and a escape from real life pressures.

Genres I am interested in:
Fantasy
Middle Ages
Science Fiction
Vampires
Shapeshifters
Crime Drama

Fandoms I am interested in:
Pokemon
Harry Potter
Anita Blake
Dragonriders of Pern
Star Wars

I don't mind roleplaying romance but I am not looking for smut. It has to make sense for the roleplay. I am okay with a fade to black moment instead of roleplaying it out. For me its about the story and the character. I am open to roleplaying it out.

I am in the Pacific Standard Timezone. I work full time and will be seen in the evenings and weekends online.

Chuck “Boomer” Simmons

Soundtrack: Light Up the Night - The Protomen

The heavy Russian had ravaged Chuck’s armor. Chuck was in pain but functional. Endorphins and adrenaline were already helping him cope and keep moving. He shook his head and blinked a few times. He was a little disoriented after dealing with the heavy and the other two exos. He had lost his situational awareness as he focused on the giant. He was trying to find out where the team was in their mission objectives.

Adam: "Clear. We need to move to neutralize the pump system, fast. Don't hit any pipes, if there's any leak, we're totally fucked. Once we get confirmation the toxin is dead, then we raise hell."

Chuck’s head cleared quickly as he dealt with the knife injury. He looked towards the Sol Hestia tanks they were all trying to reach. It felt like a small army was pouring into the room. They didn’t seem to care that they might hit the Sol Hestia tanks as they came in all guns blazing. The heavy had taken out and had even been using high caliber armor piercing rounds. That was part of why Chuck’s armor looked like a rabid dog had gnawed on it. There were jagged holes here in there. His back plate was chewed up with several holes. His front plate looked like a clawed monster had pulled it apart in places. The floor had become slick with algae and water from the tanks that had been hit by stray bullets.

Chuck knew it was time to up the carnage. He would just have to be careful to knock people away from the tanks instead of towards them. Luckily Chuck had a plan for that. His leg armor hadn’t been hit yet. His jump jets were still in working order.

Luisa: "Ah, Boaro! So nice of you to come see us! Shame you'll be leaving, in a fucking bodybag, mierda! You and your two friends!"

Chuck sighed as it appeared the lady in charge of the exo-suited squad between his team and the tanks seemed to have beef with Ebrima. Was there anyone the man had not pissed off in the past? The lady in question went directly for Ebrima leaving a sea of exos facing him. Chuck smiled wickedly as he told Ebrima over the coms.

Chuck: “You know Boaro, you seem to make friends wherever you go. I think you need lessons in how to talk to ladies. Not that I would rate that freak threatening you as a lady.”

Chuck began a running charge towards the line of exo-clad soldiers in front of him. He was already taking fire from them as he reached back and grabbed Lucille. He activated his jump jets and pushed off hard just before he hit their line and leaped up and over their heads getting enough air to flip so when he landed behind them he was facing their backs. Chuck began to swing with all his might knocking soldiers left and right but away from the tank behind him.

Chuck: “Batter up!”

Chuck’s enhanced strength along with Lucille’s weight and strength combined to crush helmets and toppled heavy exo-suited soldiers. He only managed to crush a few skulls and knock two over but it was a start. Chuck did his best to distract and engage as many soldiers as possible as he began to lay into them with his Lucille.

Samantha Dalton AKA Chaos

Samantha hastily stripped wires and spliced in components, wires, adapters, and other equipment as she worked with the wires that she had pulled from the wall. She was feeling the pressure of moving as fast as she could. She didn’t want to give Rose time to transfer any data out. She needed her ability to hyper-focus like never before. It was only the world at stake right? The adrenaline flowing through her was making her hands shake. Samantha’s body was fighting the flight or fight reflex from all the hormones and adrenaline hitting her system. She took a deep breath and pushed her high intellect and compartmentalize skills to the max.

She focused on getting everything spliced in. She managed to narrow her focus down to what her hands were doing. She pushed away the chaos of gunfire, the floor beginning to tilt as the blimp fell from the sky slowly, people screaming, and the voices coming over the comms. She managed to reroute the outgoing signal projectors into a buffer loop that would overload and destroy all the data. That would prevent any signals from getting out. She couldn’t do anything about the terminal with the hacker yet. She had managed to isolate what they could do from it though to the secret room. Samantha used her haptic gloves as she began to hack through the encryption and over the top security protocols that Rose’s hacker had used to secure her systems. Samantha was biting her lip as she worked. Rose’s hacker might be better than her. Samantha was struggling to break through.

Samantha’s concentration was broken by Bob’s voice. “Signal isolation and lock down has been achieved.” Samantha smiled as she finally broke through Rose’s firewall. She took control of the systems and locked the hacker out. Samantha had Bob locking down the computers to prevent any commands in or out. Making the terminal the hacker was using a door stop. She could hear cursing from inside the room. It was at that moment that a huge noise sounded behind Samantha as the Exo crashed through the wall sending shrapnel flying across the room. The action was moving fast and before Samantha could react, Athena and Skye had already dealt with the threat. More soldiers kept flowing into their location.

Samantha realized that the knockout gas grenade she had sent into the secret room had not worked. Her best guess was that either the grenade had failed to deploy or Artemis had developed a counter of some kind. Maybe the room had special air scrubbers to prevent a chemical attack. That might be likely with the clones in there. It didn’t really matter because the only thing that did was it failed to take the hacker out. She had hoped to take the hacker out without having to fire into the room. It was at this moment that she heard Queen come over comms.

Queen: "Chaos, get to that terminal and take the hacker out! Don't touch a fucking thing, check the hacker to see if there's anything on him!"

Chaos: “What the hell do you think I have been doing, braiding my hair!”

Chaos couldn’t help the snark. It was how her body was bleeding off the excess adrenaline enough she could think.

Chaos: “Queen, I have locked the terminal in the hidden room out of communication and locked it down. I am moving in to deal with the hacker now.”

Samantha left the jury rigged mess on the floor by the door. She grabbed a throwing knife in each hand. A knife would be better than bullets. She could control where they went better and they should theoretically cause less damage. Not to mention that they wouldn’t ricochet like a bullet could or would have as much force behind them. Samantha got up on the balls of her feet. She stood up and backed up a few steps before running and diving through the door. Samantha rolled and came back up on her feet running. Samantha put her all into crossing the distance towards the hacker who was firing a gun at her as fast as they could just spraying bullets towards her. Samantha’s body was pushed off balance as she caught a bullet in her right side. She kept pushing even as she felt another bullet throw her left shoulder back. She hurled the knife in her right hand as soon as she had a clear visual on the hacker. Her aim was spot on as she managed to nail the hacker in the throat. They dropped their now empty gun and grabbed their throat eyes wide before falling to the floor.

Samantha began to look around. She didn’t want to touch much in here but she wanted to be sure Rose couldn’t leap to another body. She had managed to lock out all signals but her clones were still inside this room where the signal was active. Sam quickly searched the fallen body of the hacker. She pulled everything out of his pockets. She suspected sol hestia had been used to booby trap the room. The hacker had a glass vial of liquid on a keychain with a removable 100 terabyte hard drive in his pants pocket. Samantha didn’t touch the terminal yet though.

Queen: "Chaos, status on that terminal? Cut it when ready."

Chaos: “Terminal is secured.”

Samantha began to look over the machinery that was hooked up to the clones. She quickly figured out how to turn it off. She turned the life support off. She didn’t wait for Queen's order as she began to execute Rose’s clones. She used her pistol to put a bullet in each one’s head. Samantha was not usually a blood thirsty type. She was the one to sneak in, get the intel and get out. But she took great pleasure in eliminating the four clones in the room. She would not leave this evil bitch any hiding place to run too. She would not let her terrorize the planet or her friend any more.

Chaos: “Come back from that bitch!”

Samantha heard alarms screaming but she had locked the room systems so the only thing it could trigger was any failsafes that had not been disarmed when she took control of the terminal.

Chaos: “Bob what are the alarms for?”

Bob: “The alarms are alerts that the clone’s vital signs have flatlined. There was a failsafe code tied to the clones like a dead man’s switch to release the Sol Hestia. However that was neutralized when we first got here. The code never left the room since we locked the signal transponders down.”

Chaos smiled content that at least Rose would be unable to hop into another body from here. She began her inspection of the terminal. She bypassed the security since she had already taken control. She began to disable all the traps on the terminal. She began purging the information on the terminal. She didn’t trust anyone with the Sol Hestia and the information on the clones. She deleted that information in blocks. Personally ensuring it would never see the light of day again. She did download any files that had to do with Artemis operations. She would turn that over to Raven upon their return to base. Samantha’s focus was on the data in the terminal unaware that Rose was doing her stereotypical evil villain monologue to Skye.

Queen: "Contact down. That's it. Rose is out."

Warning lights began to flash across the screen along with error messages. Samantha began typing frantically to try and understand what was happening.

Queen: "Secure the cockpit, Athena. Drop the altitude down and get us on the floor. Chaos, Nord, confirm all her files are dead. If she sprouts out anywhere now, it'll be here. We need to give it a sweep."

Chaos: “Already working on it. Clones in this room are dealt with. Something triggered though. I am working to figure out what’s going on.”

Samantha backtracked the error messages and finally understood what had happened. She contacted Skye with anger and panic in her voice.

Chaos: “Queen, Rose’s original body was on the blimp. Before we managed to isolate the servers her backup triggered its awakening when all her clones were killed. She is somewhere on the blimp.”

Samantha executed the final purge of data and set the system to reformat and overload. No one would get anything off this computer. She wanted this evil to stop here. She simply didn’t trust any organization or government with either the cloning or Sol Hestia information. She would ensure that the world never faced this particular threat again. Samantha stood up from the server and began to make her way out of the secret room. Samantha fell to the floor with a scream of pain as she was hit with a bolt of electricity. She heard Rose’s voice laughing

Rose: “You didn’t think I would leave my revenge to chance do you?”

Samantha had managed to destroy the terminal but there had been a manual trap she had triggered. There had been a pressure plate on the floor that had armed when the clones flatlined. The pressure plate triggered an electric shock of 220 volts. Samantha’s suit has some insulation qualities but not enough for such a strong and direct jolt to her system. Samantha felt as if her nerves were on fire and she passed out from the pain as her heartbeat stuttered. Her unconscious body in a heap on the floor, smoke wafted off the charred section on the front of her armor.

Valkyrie Paddock
Prior to the Pre Qualifying Race

Alexander had already checked in with Felix and Helga. The ships had been unloaded and all systems checked. They had managed to get the pilots a test run on the track. Alexander had discussed strategy for this race with the team while they were working in the simulators to dial in the ships. Alexander didn’t expect their ships to do well here. Their team’s ships just didn’t have the speed to match most of the other teams. They had managed to increase the engines thrust by modifying the thrust nozzles on the engines but it only gave them a little bit more speed. Their ship’s strength was in handling and stability. The engineers had managed to add the paint coating to scatter and break up the signal that energy leaching systems use to suck energy out of another ship. They would be testing it out at this race to see how effective it might be. Testing in the lab and at the home track showed that it reduced the amount of energy that could be leached from the ship by almost 40% which was pretty significant.

Alexander explained the situation to Paul and Dorian. He was blunt and told them that they wouldn’t be able to match the other ships on the straights. They would have to use the ship's better handling to maintain as much speed as possible in the corners and chicanes. They could deploy their energy leaching systems on a ship in front of them, draining the energy out of the ship in front of them. There was danger in getting too close and it took a skilled pilot to pull it off. The stability of their ship and its superior handling would aid them with this. Alexander really felt that was the only strategy that would give them a remote chance of placing on the podium here in Africa. He made it clear to Paul and Dorian, he didn’t expect them to win in Africa. The goal was to pick up more points for the team to start moving them into contention for the championship. They needed to start getting points in order to achieve that goal. This race would be part of that slow but steady climb to regain lost points. They should strive for the win but realistically the points win was what they could achieve. It was a smart move. The goal for their team for Africa was to get both pilots in the top 10 and if possible get one of them in the top 5.

Alexander had called to check in with Mabel. He missed her warm presence but he liked that she was at headquarters watching things there. They were still investigating what was happening with Maier before he was fired. The unanswered questions had left him feeling uneasy. He wasn’t happy about the interest in Audrick’s death either. He was worried that it would distract Paul. A distracted racer was dangerous. It also left Alexander feeling like he was being watched. He had that itch between his shoulder blades before a battle that something bad was headed his way.

Alexander had gotten the medical clearance for both pilots from the new head of the medical team Dr. Montgomery. After Dr. Zimmerman was fired, Alexander had a meeting with the entire medical team to discuss department changes. He discussed the changes to their department and Dr. Montgomery was voted in unanimously as the team lead by the others in the department. It seemed Dr. Montgomery had done his best to protect his fellow colleagues from Dr. Zimmerman’s abuse. The medical team structure was being run in a much more open and trusting structure. They had a collaborative structure with weekly team meetings where they shared their progress, issues, and successes with each other. Many of them were now working together on projects instead of independently which had been leading to better results in some areas. It had certainly opened up new research areas which their European Union Partners were happy about.

Alexander checked in with security before knocking on the door of the trailer that acted as the pilots retreat and dressing room. He waited for an acknowledgement before opening the door and climbing up the stairs. Paul and Dorian were dressed in their racing suits sitting on the couch waiting for the race to start. He smiled at them both and took a seat across from them.

Alexander: “Hello Dorian, Paul. How are you doing?”

Dorian rolled his eyes at Alexander. He was still frustrated with Alexander. He could see what Alexander was up to but he still wasn’t happy with Alexander. He was not upset with the changes that Alexander was making. He could even admit that some of them were long overdue. Dorian would like to retire with a championship win. He wasn’t sure if Alexander’s methods would manage to make that happen before he retired. Dorian’s media presence had taken a little hit along with Valkyrie. Alexander’s sudden takeover of the team had caused sponsors, investors, and fans a sense of uncertainty. That had resulted in a lack of confidence or a lack of support from them. Dorian was worried it would impact his retirement and there was nothing he could really do about it.

Dorian: “I am fine.”

Paul was more comfortable with Alexander now. He had been surprised by some of the changes that Alexander was making. Working with Alexander was completely different than working with Dominic Ricci. Dominic was arrogant and domineering. He just told you what he wanted you to do. Dominic would just yell at you without explanation and any failures were your fault. Alexander listened to what Paul felt would work best for him. He had guided him to try out and train on some new strategies to improve his racing skills. Paul trusted Alexander more after his open discussion with his mother after Auckland. Paul was feeling much more confident in his future and his skills as a pilot.

Paul: “I am great! Excited to see if the strategy you came up with works at all.”

Alexander smiled at Paul’s eager golden retriever energy. He was so young and energetic. He could see that he was eager to attack the course and be competitive.

Alexander: “I wanted to let you know that I have received your clearance to race from Dr. Montgomery. Remember what we talked about during training. Valkyrie ships are simply not capable of the same speeds at Apex and Southern Cross. The mechanics and engineers managed to tweak the engines to get a few more KPH out of them but it won’t be enough to close that gap. You are going to have to use your skills to maintain as much speed as possible in the turns and corners. That is where you will be able to catch up and possibly overtake competitors. Remember to play to the strengths of your ships which is stability and handling. Find your line and stick to it. If you get the opportunity, draft off of a faster opponent. Make them pull your ship along, stealing their speed for your use. Use your energy leaching systems to drain them forcing them to slow down. We need to pick up points here in Africa. We need both of you in the top 10 and if possible one of you in the top 5. Even that is going to be incredibly difficult for us at this track. Today it's going to come down to your skills as pilots. You can do it but it's going to take skill and racing smart.”

Dorian was not happy with Alexander’s strategy because he felt it was his only option. He had been begging for a ship with more speed. He had already been using all the skills he had to remain competitive. Dorian felt that Valkyrie was making his job impossible as their ship's speed was good enough to maintain the middle of the pack position he had now. He wanted to win and he didn’t think it was possible with their current ships.

Dorian scoffed: “All the skills in the world are not going to make up for our ships running so much slower than the leaders. We are not miracle workers Alexander.”

Paul looked over at Dorian and knew his teammate was frustrated. Half the time Dorian was angry and sullen. He knew Dorian was competitive and had expressed how frustrated he was at their equipment. Paul could see why Dorian was frustrated but he was grateful to have a strategy to use against the faster ships. Paul’s goal was to move up in the driver standings. He didn’t need to win to do that, just place better than he did in the last race.

Paul: “Are you sure my ship is going to start this time?”

Alexander looked at Dorian with a raised eyebrow. He met Dorian’s eyes straight on and held them as he asked him.

Alexander: “Dorian. We had 2 weeks to get ready for this race. What else do you think I could have done? Have I not been moving fast enough for you? What else would you have me do for you?”

Dorian knew that Alexander had come in having to get up to speed after being out of the game for many years. He also knew that the type of changes he wanted weren't possible in two weeks. The team could have dropped in a new engine but a stronger faster engine that would fit right into their current ships would have meant changes to the ship. They could possibly have done it but that doesn’t mean that the speed wouldn’t cost them in other areas such as stability or handling. Dorian’s worry was that Alexander was playing the long game and Dorian only had this season before he retired. He wanted to go out on a win. He felt like he was running out of time.

Dorian sighed: “Alexander I want to win. I need a ship that can compete with Apex. I understand the time constraints. I don’t like my only option being to hope for a top ten finish. I want to have the podium in my sights.”

Alexander: “Dorian you are a veteran. You know that while individual race wins are great, its overall points at the end of the season. We are just getting started this season. I promise larger changes are coming but they take time to do it right and do it safely. I won’t put you or Paul in a craft that is unstable for the possibility of a single win. We need to move up in points. I think this is achievable at this race. You are a skilled pilot. Is a win probable for you here in Africa, not likely. But you could move from your current standing at 8 to 5. Then you are in a better position to go for the win when those larger changes pay off in a future race. A display of true racing skill would only enhance your standing as a pilot and with sponsors and potential endorsements.”

Alexander paused letting those words settle into the awkward silence between the three of them before he turned to Paul.

Alexander: “You know your ship is working Paul. You even managed to get a test run in it yourself. The team has your back. Both of your ships have already been double checked. They are ready.”

Alexander looked over at Dorian again.

Alexander: “Are we good? Do you need anything?”

Dorian just nodded. He knew Alexander was right but it was a bitter pill to swallow.

Paul smiled as he looked over at Dorian.

Paul: “Think about this Dorian. You are not a pilot really known for close driving and use of energy systems. They won’t expect this from you. Educate a few of them in what a skilled racer you are. I can’t wait to see how things play out at the races.”

Alexander looked thoughtful at Paul’s observations.

Dorian looked over at Paul thinking over what he had to say.

Dorian: “Paul makes a good point. If I change up and use a different skill set than what they are used to seeing from me. It might surprise a few of them.”

Alexander smiled and nodded at the two pilots. He was glad to see Dorian’s frustration and anger level drop with the discussion.

Alexander: “I will see you two out there. Good luck!”

Alexander stood up and made his way to the door before turning back towards the two men.

Alexander: “And Dorian, I know you are skilled enough to do this. Go out there and show them you are champion material. Show them why you are considered a veteran racer.”

Interviews after Qualifiers

Dorian and Paul were seated together on a couch. The interviews were taking place after the qualifying round. The screen behind them was blank and would probably be used to add graphics and video later. Aurora popped up in her hologram form. There were remote control cameras, lighting, and a sound system. They had small wireless microphones that were about the size of a quarter that were attached to their throats under the collar of their suits. It was the same set up as before

Aurora: "Dorian, Paul, a mixed bag today in qualifying. What are your thoughts?"

Dorian: "Well, you may have heard me earlier! Okay, perhaps I was a little demanding, 8th is good considering the missile-like ships that Southern Cross and Al-Saqr have here. But we'll take advantage where we can, and claw it back."

Dorian's leathery smooth French accent carried a smirk on his face, trying to at least wipe the silliness from earlier.

Paul was smiling into the camera. He did his best to hide his surprise at Dorian’s response. What did Dorian mean that she might have heard him earlier? What had he said?

Paul: “Well Aurora, we didn’t lose any ground and I am certainly happier with my starting position this time. Dorian had a solid performance. Our team knew Africa was going to be a tough race for us. Qualifiers offer a chance to see how your craft will do on the track. We hope to bring some strategy and skill to the race tomorrow and make up some ground. Sometimes it's about the skill of the pilot.”

Paul gave Aurora a confident wink. Paul was feeling that he recovered that well and gave an honest well thought out answer.

Aurora: "We look forward to seeing that. What about the changes within the team, do you feel the direction is beginning to yield results?"

Dorian pasted a fake smile on his face. It was difficult not to let his frustration show.

Dorian: “Alexander Knight is already making changes at Valkyrie AGR Sport. I think his strategies and changes will show results in time. I don’t believe we will see much in the way of results just yet.”

Dorian did his best not to look bitter about that. He wanted to see those changes now, not at the end of the season. His voice had an edge to it that he couldn’t hide.

Dorian: “Knight had a rough start but the team seems to be rallying well under his leadership for the most part.”

Paul looked thoughtful and had watched Dorian as he answered the question. Paul knew how frustrated Dorian was.

Paul looked at Aurora before giving his answer.

Paul: “Well Aurora, Mr. Knight has only had the job for 2 weeks. I think he is moving as fast as he can. I agree with Dorian that I believe his strategy will show results in the future. The changes he is working on are not short term strategies that will show immediate results. Our mechanic and engineering team have done their best to prepare our ships for the race here in Africa. This race is going to test our skill as pilots. We might just surprise people. Don’t count us out yet!”

Paul once again looked confident and at ease.

Valkyrie AGR Headquarters

Wednesday March 15th, 2094

Soundtrack: Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield

The days since the team had gotten the simulator up and running had not been spent all in training. The marketing team had used the time at headquarters to schedule in time for the pilots to meet the needs of their sponsors. Paul and Dorian had time scheduled for photoshoots that took place at team headquarters on the test track.

They were shooting product endorsement marketing materials for Zap, a sports drink manufacturer that was one of their bigger sponsors. There were the typical product placement photos with them in their race suits by the cars holding the drinks and drinking them. The company had gotten some b roll film of the ships on the track for their commercials. They filmed the pilots climbing out of their ships and asking for a Zap as if they had just finished a race. They said their cheesy marketing line. It was not creative and was pretty typical but it still sold. They take a drink and give a satisfied sigh before saying “Ahh that was just what I needed. A Zap to pick my energy up.” It had taken Paul and Dorian a few takes to get through it without laughing. If it had been a race, they would have had to wait for help before they got out of their ship. Some of their technicians helped to ensure they were properly plugged in and all safety restraints were in place before every race. Paul and Dorian found the commercials unrealistic but hey they got paid for doing them.

The following day they repeated the exercise but this time for their sponsor that sold vegetarian meat substitute products. Their name was ironically, I Can’t Believe It's Not Meat! This time they were shot in the grassy central park area of headquarters. The sponsor had set it up to look like a backyard BBQ or tailgate party. The two pilots were in jeans and team race t-shirts. They had to take a bite of their bratwurst and say the company’s tagline with excitement. “I Can’t Believe It's Not Meat!” Well at least those commercials would come across as funny. They could laugh about them. Their products were actually pretty good as well. That made it easier for them to get behind the product and sell it. Paul had fun shooting that commercial. He liked being outside in the sunshine. It was a good break from training. Too much training and they could lose their edge. These were the biggest sponsors that Paul had worked with so far in his career.

Alexander was curious about why Felix had requested a meeting. Alexander had been kept apprised of the modifications the team was making to the ships to get them ready for Africa. He received daily updates on what was happening with the ships and their performance. The team had managed to boost the engine’s thrust power which in turn had made the ship faster. Then they had to work on the stability and handling. There were minute modifications that they had worked on till each ship was dialed in. The engineers and mechanics had managed to eke out another 20kph out of the craft. The pilots had been testing the changes out in the simulator. Trial runs had been scheduled on the test track today. Then the pilots would get at least a few days of practice in with the updates before they headed to Africa for the next race.

Mabel led Felix into Alexander’s office. Alexander recognised that mischievous look on Mabel’s face. He kept his suspicions to himself as he rose to his feet and greeted Felix with a handshake.

Alexander: “Hello Felix. I wanted to let you know that Katherine said nice job on getting the team some additional exposure on social media. She also wanted to relay her thanks that she didn’t have to bail anyone out of jail or pay for damages to the property.”

Felix gave Alexander a sheepish smile and a shrug.

Felix: “I took a page out of your book. We called all the engineers and mechanics and decided some alcohol to help loosen everyone up and some place neutral to get to know one another would help. And well…. It worked.”

Alexander looked surprised at his answer.

Mabel carried a tray of coffee cups with a carafe of coffee on it. She held the tray out to Felix with a smile. Mabel spoke in an innocent voice with a deadpan delivery.

Mabel: “Would you like some Libation Lubrication.”

Felix startled a little doing a double take his gaze landing on Mabel with wide eyes.

Mabel giggled and set the tray down. She prepared her own cup of coffee as she spoke.

Mabel: “I did tell you that I saw the security tapes Felix.”

Mabel turned to Alexander to share what she found so funny.

Mabel: “You see Alex what Felix hasn’t told you was that they bonded very well over darts, pool, and alcohol. Sometime that evening they all ended up back here in the workrooms working on something together. They continued their drinking game though. When they appeared to get stuck, there was a general consensus for Libation Lubrication… being more alcohol. Their antics were quite entertaining to watch. I feel that should be their personal department motto. It is very catchy, don't you think?”

Alexander didn’t fight the smile. He did manage not to laugh. He was grateful that he was not the but of one of Mabel’s jokes for once. Alexander’s tone was amused as he indicated the seats and reclaimed his behind the desk after pouring a cup of coffee. He was trying to give Felix a little time to recover from Mabel’s idea of fun.

Alexander: “Well as your boss, I can’t say I approve of any slogans that encourage drinking on the job. As a coworker and fan, I think it's great! Who came up with that one?”

Mabel just chuckled as she took one of the seats in front of Alexander’s desk. She sipped her coffee and set the cup down on the edge of the desk. She grabbed her tablet to set it up to take notes for the meeting.

Felix: “Uh Maximillian Gruber our electrical systems expert coined it. The rest of the team liked it and well… let’s face it we were all drunk off our asses.”

Felix looked a little embarrassed but seemed to be recovering well.

Alexander smiled and sipped his coffee. He was pleased to note that Felix looked more confident and at more ease when speaking with him. He didn’t sound as stilted and formal as he had in the past.

Mabel gave them both an expectant look.

Mabel: "Are we ready to start the meeting? I am assuming you want me to take notes.”

Alexander nodded at Mabel’s question. They had worked together long enough that Mabel would know what information he would have her researching to follow up on the information from the meeting.

Felix took his seat and prepared himself a cup of coffee. He added sugar and cream the way he liked it. He allowed himself a good long drink before he reached for his tablet.

Felix looked at Mabel and took his embarrassment like a champ. She might have embarrassed him but it was only in front of Alexander and she had still taken care of everyone who was still here the next morning with a hangover. He gave her a smile and saluted her with his cup.

Felix: “Well played madam. Well played indeed.”

Mabel gave him a genuine smile and a little chuckle. She gave Felix a saucy wink before turning back to Alexander.

Alexander just laughed and shook his head. He turned their meeting back to business.

Alexander: “Alright Felix, you asked for this meeting. I want to commend you and the team on the progress you have been making. I was worried there wouldn’t be much you could do before the next race. What’s going on?”

Felix smiled and looked excited as he set his cup down. He opened up his tablet and sent a set of detailed 3 dimensional plans for a new ship design to the holographic projector on Alexander’s desk.

Alexander leaned forward in interest. His knowledgeable eyes noted significant changes. This was an all new design not a tweak to a current model.

Felix: “Well sir, as I mentioned we were all playing darts and pool. I was on my third beer by this point. I was shooting darts with Colton Mathews, our aerodynamics expert. We were debating the differences between our ships designs and that of the darts we were throwing. That sparked a debate about basing a new ship design along those same aerodynamics. We had attracted the attention of the rest of the team. We all began to give our input. We quickly realized we were all inspired but didn’t have a good way to take notes and run simulations. So we paid our tab and came back to the office. We spent the rest of the evening hammering a new ship design based on all of our ideas. We have spent the last few days refining them into a completed design set for you to look over. This was the result.”

Mabel looked interested and just saved the designs to her tablet for later work. She would start sourcing any special materials or components that might take time to get.

Alexander spun the ship and was examining the designs more closely. He gave Felix an encouraging smile.

Alexander: “Well don’t keep me in suspense. Explain what the team came up with.”

Felix: “Well it is a completely new design. The new hull will start thin at the front tip and expand into the wings where the steering actuators will be located like the wings of an aircraft. The new sleek design is based on a dart sir. The hull will be made of a new polymer that is strong enough and lightweight. There is a new improved inertial damping system. It will take more energy but be almost 40% stronger and more effective. There is a new cockpit design that will ride in the center of the ship on a series of gyroscopes and gimbals that will reduce the amount of g forces that the pilot experiences. The engine design is a newer more efficient model as well. It will be an elongated design and again the weight will be in the middle of the ship. This will change the center of gravity for the ship and help with stability. The engine is actually a jet engine that feeds into a specially designed turbine. The engine thrust will flow into a concentrated cylinder that has the turbines in the center with a gap directing the thrust past the turbines and out the rear of the ship pushing it along. The engine will run on biofuel and provide the thrust for the ship. The cylinder style rotating turbines will not block the thrust but they will spin from it. This rotation will be generating electricity as the engine runs. It works on a similar principle to some of the early hybrid cars. The ships will have a lot more electrical power available to them as they are constantly generating additional energy. This will allow for more powerful systems on the ship. Other improvements include new wiring to reduce energy loss to distance traveled and material quality. The hull will have energy disruption systems molded into it. This should be able to scatter and break up other ships' ability to leech energy from the ship. It won’t stop it but should reduce the impact of it. The new wiring system will include the interlocking design by Kenji to reduce failures due to connection issues. The energy gathering pods on the bottom of the ship will be made from a new superconductor and made larger so that the ship will be able to suck up and keep more energy from the track.”

Alexander paid attention as Felix went through the design features that the team had come up with. Alexander was impressed with the low profile sleek design. The ship looked fast, stable, and dangerous. Alexander knew building a ship from scratch with the new systems would take time. They had plans but there were always practical things that came about when developing new technology. The engine design in particular would take time and testing to get right. The cockpit design might cause them issues when they went to fit everything together.

Alexander: “Have you run it through computer simulations yet?”

Felix: “No. We wanted your approval before we started building the simulation models. We didn’t want to waste time if you were just going to scrap it. Dominic was flat against any large changes to the ships.”

Alexander gave Felix a big smile.

Alexander: “I like it. But I want hard numbers before I try to sell the board on the new design. Put together the computer models. I will need that data to convince them that the expense of 3 new ships will be necessary. Good work Felix. Please tell the team I am happy that their Libation Lubrication was such a successful endeavor.”

Mabel: “I will use Felix’s designs and put together a materials estimate for you.”

Felix looked surprised that Alexander was moving forward with the design. Dominic had always shut him down when he recommended taking their ships back to design. He had not felt that was needed to win. It had always frustrated him. He smiled and nodded at Alexander. He was excited about the prospect of finally getting the opportunity to build a new ship design. It was the reason he had come to Valkyrie AGR Sport.

Felix: “I will get the team working on it around preparations for Africa.”

Alexander nodded: “Great! Did you need anything else?”

Felix: “No. Things are going well. Having all the mechanics and engineers working together in the same space is already helping with miscommunication issues. Helga and I work together well as a team. Things are going pretty good.”

Mabel smiled at Felix knowing he had not been treated very well by the previous crew chief. She was pleased to see his shoulders come down from around his ears. The man had been so tense when she first met him. She wondered if he wore shoulder pads.

Alexander: “Keep up the good work Felix. I am glad to hear that things are working well so far.”

Felix nodded with the biggest smile on his face as he shut down his tablet.

Felix: “Thank you sir.”

Mabel stood and gathered all the now empty coffee cups and put them on the tray. She tucked her tablet under her arm and followed Felix as he left the office.

Mabel stopped Felix at her desk.

Felix looked confused when Mabel put a gentle hand on his arm and asked him to wait a moment.

Felix: “What is it, Mabel?”

Mabel grinned as she pulled a wrapped shirt box from a desk drawer and handed it to him.

Felix looked nervous as she handed it to him.

Felix: “What’s this?”

Mabel gave him a smile as she told him.

Mabel: “Open it.”

Felix looked nervous but did as she asked. He tugged on the ribbon before ripping the paper off the plain white box. He opened the box and inside was a black t-shirt. He pulled it out so he could look at it closer. It had some graphics on it. It had a gold dragon sitting on a barstool with a drink in its hand. Old English font read “Valkyrie Fuel the Official Libation Lubrication for the Valkyrie Engineering and Mechanical Team.

Alexander heard laughter coming from just outside his door where Mabel’s desk was. He got up and poked his head out to see what was going on. He started laughing as he saw the t-shirt in Felix’s hand. He shook his head in disbelief as he got his laughter under control.

Alexander: “Well Mabel, I hope you ordered enough for all of them.”

Felix was all smiles as he thanked Mabel.

Felix: “Alexander is right. They are all going to want one when they see it.”

Mabel: “Felix, that is why I gave you yours first!”

Mabel turned her chair around and sitting in the seat was a large cardboard box.

Mabel: “I thought you might want to give your team their shirts. Did Katherine tell you that the Drunken Dragon’s posts had gone viral? Your team’s post seemed to be a hit with the fans.”

Alexander leaned against the doorframe. He knew those t-shirts would remind the team that they work together. It was a way to bury the differences between them and present themselves as a unified team. Mabel was once again ahead of him. He would have to thank her later. Alexander suspected those t-shirts would soon become cherished and sought after. He wondered if the other departments would feel competitive and try to come up with their own team mottos.

Felix left with a pep in his step carrying the box with his tablet on top and a smile.

The Conspiracy Files: The Conspiracy Files VLOG has decided to investigate the rumors surrounding Audrick Mulder’s death. So far, Conspiracy Files has uncovered that the lead investigator for the Racing Commission retired a few months after the end of the Mulder investigation. Our sources discovered that they had died in a drowning accident while out sailing on a yacht in the Caribbean a year later.

Nobody404: How did the lead investigator, who was making a modest income at the time, retire early to a lavish lifestyle?
OfficeDrone#12: Wow! Small following. This only popped up on my feed due to keyword filters. Don’t know if I can trust information from a conspiracy theory site.
SuperfanAGR54: Sad. Using keyword filters to try and up their readership.
DantheMan: Don’t drink the kool aid!
Superfan2075: Wow the Drunken Dragon is starting a trend. Others are going to use name filters to try and reach more people. Is there a way to weed out crap like this?
DadBod89: I don’t know if I trust the source.
Hater101: #FakeRacerNews
Papabear34: Wow this old news just won’t go away.
Nana2050: That is circumstantial but damming all the same.

Soundtrack: Through the Fires and Flames - DragonForce

Felix had slept in and was two hours late to work this morning. He wouldn’t be surprised if half his department had called out sick. Felix had suggested that the mechanics and engineers bury the hatchet by spending some time together. They had decided some alcohol to reduce tensions and get people talking wouldn’t be a bad thing. Then someone had started placing bets on the pool and darts and that became a team drinking game. By the end of the evening it had worked. They were all just team Valkyrie not engineers and mechanics. The team had gotten into a minor bar brawl but had been kind enough to take it outside. He wasn’t sure if the Drunken Dragon would be happy to see them again. Felix felt as if his head was going to explode and his mouth felt like a writing out dirty dish rag. He had managed to panic and shower and get to work. He still managed to look wrinkled and disheveled. Felix had grabbed pants and a shirt from the bedroom floor. He was wrinkled and his shirt was misbuttoned. His hair was only combed in place because he had showered.

Felix had just swiped his card to enter the Engineering Department when Mabel showed up pushing a cart full of trays, coffee cups, and a thermos of coffee.

Mabel gave Felix a wicked grin as she gave him a hearty loud good morning greeting.

Felix winced and swayed as his head thumped in time with his heart beat. Felix's voice squeaked out in pain.

Felix: “Not so loud.. Please..”

Mabel laughed uproariously at the pain in Felix’s voice. Mabel followed Felix as he pushed open the door and held it open for her. She pushed the cart into the room. She looked around and could see that the team that had made it into work so far were all in rough shape. Mabel noted that Helga had her hair up in a messy bun which looked stiff like something had been spilled in it. Inga had what looked like a magic marker mustache. Zane looked like he had just woken up in the corner. Christopher’s fly was down and his shirttail was pulled through the front of it. Isabella was asleep on a pile of tarps. Colton had his feet up on a chair and his head was on his jacket like a pillow. It looked like the evening had ended here. Mabel smiled as she looked around knowingly at the team. Mabel motioned all of them to come towards her.

Mabel: “I come bearing gifts.”

Mabel lifted the covers off the piles of buttered toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, coffee, and donuts. Mabel smiled as she saw some eyes light up in pleasure.

Mabel: “This should help your hangovers. I hope your libation excess experiments helped you solve some of those problems you were working on. I thought about letting you all suffer. But I was young once too.”

Helga came over and hugged Mabel before pouring a cup of coffee for herself.

Helga: “I will forgive you for bringing me the nectar of the gods that I so richly need this morning. Bless you.”

Felix almost pushed Helga out of his way as he helped himself to a cup. He sipped and sighed as the warmth seemed to trickle all the way to his toes. He closed his eyes and was hugging his cup. Felix told Mabel in an absent minded tone.

Felix: “You are a goddess among women.”

The others began to help themselves to the food and coffee Mabel had brought them from the cafeteria.

Felix finally opened his eyes and noticed that Mabel was still standing there staring at him. He smiled at her before speaking to her in an excited voice.

Felix: “We did have a breakthrough. Can you arrange a meeting with Alexander for….”

Felix turned to Helga and the team. “Can we get it done by Wednesday?”

Mabel was amused as some excited yeses and a few groans of maybe and a one only if they lived through today.

Felix: “For Wednesday afternoon. We have something we would like to show him.”

Mabel just grinned and nodded as she replied.

Mabel: “Of course Felix. Please be sure to return the dishes and cart to the cafeteria for Jaques when you are done with it.”

Felix remembered his manners and told her gratefully with an embarrassed look on his face.

Felix: “Thank you Mabel. We all appreciate it.”

Mabel just nodded regally and turned to leave.

Mabel: “I will send you a calendar invite for the meeting.”

Mabel deliberately paused in the doorway and turned around to smile at all the faces that were now awake and watching her. She cackled evilly with a wicked grin as she told them.

Mabel: “You should know there is security footage of last night. “ She paused again before emphasizing, “Thank you all for the entertainment.”

Mabel left to a room full of dropped jaws and open mouths. She was pretty sure it was Maximillian who said, “Oh great hairy balls of fire!”

Alexander was working in his office. He was using the large viewscreen on the wall. He used the technology in the office to replay the footage from the Auckland Race. He was watching the race from different angles. Different channels had been following different racers for parts of it. He was working hard to analyze all the footage he could find. He wanted to get an idea of the competition. What were their strengths and their racing styles? Alexander’s job was to look at and see the big picture. There was so much more to a successful racing team than just winning pilots. There was more to it than good engineers. There were a lot of moving parts to a race team. This was where his experience on the track as a former racer might help his team.

Yes there was AI and computers to put all this analysis through but they couldn’t provide gut instinct and intuition. If it was all about computers, then there would be no need for a pilot. There was still that mysterious human intuition and instinct that just couldn’t be duplicated. Augmentations might improve a human’s speed, strength, and ability to withstand more physical abuse but it augmentations couldn’t replace instinct. That bone deep almost precognitive choice to go right versus left. It is that part of the human psyche that ducks to avoid a blow you don’t see coming. Cops and soldiers saw it all the time in their line of work. Alexander had experienced that himself. It was hard to explain to anyone who had never seen it or experienced it. Racers all had to have that IT factor. That factor, that instinct that told them to save energy during this part of the race or to go outside or inside on a turn to make it around a competitor.

Racing was like watching any great sports competition, there was an art form to it. When a team was having a good day, it was like they knew where each other was going to be before they needed to be there. Passes from one teammate to another were flawless, the game seemed effortless. Racers who had that instinct and talent knew when to hit the throttle, when to add the brakes, and when to conserve energy. Like all good artists, racers all had a distinctive style that was their own.

Silver Apex sits at the top of the pack for good reason. They have a well rounded craft and pilots with augmentations that can handle it. Amy Stirling is not only good, she has the drive, augmentations, and ship to back her up. She has good instincts on the track. If Amy has one flaw, Alexander would say it is over confidence. She is almost arrogant about being at the top of the pack these days. If a few of the other teams manage to solve their issues with their ships, they will be real contenders. Amy will finally face some real challenges on the race course. Until that happens, Amy doesn’t really see anyone as true competition. Alexander can see her making good decisions on the track. She is good. There is no doubt about that. Amy is helped by augmentations. If there is ever a technical issue with her augmentations, that could be a fatal flaw for Amy. Unlike Amy her copilots can’t ever seem to measure up. Amy Stirling is the golden goose for Silver Apex. They seem to go through secondary pilots like a runner goes through shoes. Amy’s rough and hard to work with reputation are only sufferable because of her results. If she stops winning, Silver Apex sponsors may go elsewhere. Especially with the lackluster performance of the secondary pilots. They don’t seem to stick around long enough to really become a part of the team. Morale might be weaker inside the Silver Apex team that is known. Silver Apex was dominating and because of that sponsors were willing to throw their money at winning teams which means they are associated with results. What happens if Silver Apex gets knocked off that pedestal?

Al Saqr Racing Team. Kais Zenix was a super aggressive driver. He attacked the course and everything on it as it is an obstacle in his way. Layla Al-Nadir is calculating and makes educated decisions. She is cool under pressure and driven to succeed. Where Kais is charging every corner and pushing his ship to get faster and faster, Layla is calculating energy needs, and where she can push the ship to get the most of its poor handling. Layla is very similar to Amy Stirling and they both have the same fatal flaw. If something happens to their augmentations during a race, they will be in trouble. The Al Saqr team doesn’t hide that it relies on pilot modifications to get the most out of their ships. If their team manages to solve their handling issues, they will be a top contender. Layla managed to get the podium with a ship that has poor handling. There was no doubt in Alexander’s mind that she was a match for Amy Stirling. Al Saqr was a solid team that, like Southern Cross, had the backing of the local population. They represented their culture and people and because of that had solid support from the fans in the Middle East. This made them attractive to Middle Eastern sponsors.

The Southern Cross Racing Team was another team to watch as Nora Kelly demonstrated at Auckland when she managed a podium finish. Southern Cross ships had good speed, handling, and energy systems. Their ships suffered with stability which made consistency difficult for pilots. Harrison’s style was very similar to Paul’s. It was very instinctual as he seemed to drive his ship as if he was surfing a wave. He seemed to know how to nudge his ship to get the most from it. He drove with an innate grace that was beautiful to watch. Nora had good instincts but he could tell she had gotten her start in street racing. She was used to having a ship that performed at a much lower level. It was no wonder that she came out of the gate with a podium finish in her debut pro race. Nora’s style was high energy with quick decisive moves. She lacked that grace that Harrison had. Her style was a little jerky, still used to overcorrecting for poor performing ships. Her skill and confidence would grow but the learning curve would flatten out as the season went on. Alexander predicted that she would just get better throughout the season if nothing set her back mentally. Southern Cross was probably the most loved AGR team that was recognized by the region they represented. The team was backed and beloved by the populace in the area. Their focus on environmental restoration and messaging made them attractive not just to corporations working in environmental restoration but activist groups as well.

Alexander thought about his experiences in racing. There was a lot of strategy involved in different areas that had to come together for a professional team to be successful. Team sponsors were the financial support for the team. Teams needed the money to pay for salaries and equipment. Sponsors gave the team money in exchange for using their products and endorsement deals. You can have the best pilot in the world but if they couldn’t handle the marketing requirements for endorsement deals, sponsors are less likely to work with them or offer less money to do so. Endorsement deals required marketing photo shoots, commercials, and the sponsor was banking on the reputation and skill of the team they were associating their product with. If your pilot couldn’t act enough to star in a commercial, it was an issue. You can have the most charismatic pilot ever who was photogenic and had acting chops but if they were not winning races, they were a liability as well. Sponsors wanted to get their products and services in front of the fans. Some sponsors are seeking to enter new markets, or hoping to engage a new demographic, or maintain their share of an existing market. Racing was a sport and it didn’t happen without spectators who were willing to spend their money on the tickets and experiences. Fans were at the heart of racing. They were the true economic lynchpin that made any sport work. Some teams sought out sponsors who were hoping to share their equipment and technology. Engine manufacturers might sponsor a team to reflect and highlight to the public how fast their engines are. The research and development costs for that is then on the sponsor instead of the team.

Racing teams like Southern Cross and Al Saqr had cultural ties to their fans and local connections. Those ties helped fund and connect them to sponsors that wanted to help them. Whereas Silver Apex had sponsors throwing themselves at their team because they had been a dominant team for some time. They wanted to be associated with proven winners. Racing teams had to decide what kind of sponsors they wanted. Some sponsors might push teams to win at any costs. Others might be more concerned with their public image and want to avoid any kind of scandal or gray morality or ethics. Some teams embraced that win by any means mentality. They will push their pilots into augmentations that might not really be ready for human implantation or come with serious side effects. They were willing to accept the gains that came on the track despite the personal cost or long term damage done to the pilot. Alexander had been a victim to a team like that when he left racing. They wanted to take out key competitors during races. They had asked him to target racers and deliberately crash them or knock them into the walls. They were willing to take a single disqualification to remove a team from competing for the rest of the season if their craft was destroyed or the pilot was killed. It was an acceptable risk to them. Some teams would try to hide clauses in the long legal contracts that favored them if they felt they couldn’t control a pilot. They might bury clauses to retain a lot of their winnings or promotional deals than was the standard. There was a serious darkside to racing that the naive were prey too. In order to have a fan base you had to fill the tracks and stadiums where the events took place. The tracks themselves wanted packed stands. They made their money on ticket sales and drinks and food sold at the track. The racing tracks work with the racing commission to regulate racing and to ensure a minimum of safety for their property and the crowds visiting the races. They would blackball a racer that constantly broke safety rules because it put their business liability at higher risk. For a professional team to be competitive they needed top notch equipment. Racing equipment was highly specialized and teams were constantly innovating and looking for an edge over the competition. That took skilled people such as engineers which were highly educated and trained. To attract the best and most skilled engineers, teams had to have competitive pay. Some engineers sought out racing teams as a stepping stone in their career. The notoriety and prestige was highly sought after. The highest pay in the world would not help a team that treated their engineers poorly. There was a balance that had to happen for a team to be successful.

Some racing teams sought out young talent and invested in them to develop them into professional racers. Others tried to steal talent from other teams to avoid the costs of training and development. Some teams that might not have access to better augmentations might try to steal a pilot that already has the augmentations they don’t want to pay for. Some teams used strategies to steal sponsors. Others used the media to attack a team by attacking their integrity and reputation. Creating rumor and scandal to try and cost them sponsorships. Some teams used very dark strategies to kill or injure other pilots. Sabotage of other teams’ equipment was not unheard of either. Corporate espionage happens as teams send in spies to steal another team’s technological improvements. Some of these strategies take place in the shadows with little knowledge to most of those who work on the team. Money and blackmail had been used to gather the information they wanted to know or to influence race outcomes. Racing strategies came in a wide array of areas and on a spectrum from competitive to deadly. It was all a question as to how dark you want to go and who would find out about it.

Alexander knew that he would fight with everything in him to keep Valkyrie AGR Sport in the light end of things. He wanted to ensure the team had honor and integrity. He wanted to win races but he wanted them to win on their own and on their own merit. They would do it by all of them working together to find what works. They would find new innovations and strategies to help the team win. Valkyrie AGR Sport had some very intelligent and capable people working for them. All he had to do was show them the way and let them do what they knew how best. He just hoped it paid off.

Samantha Dalton AKA Chaos

Samantha trusted Skye to help keep her safe as she turned her attention to shutting down the rest of Rose’s network. Samantha tucked her crazy away as she narrowed her focus to working with Bob. There was another lurch as the blimp was slowly falling from the sky. Samantha was thrown harder against the wall. She was trying to regain her position and brace when her hand seemed to hit a hidden pressure plate. She noticed the wall popped out a little as if on a spring catch. Samantha had triggered a false panel that had popped open. The entire section of the wall swung outward. She got to her feet and scrambled up. She dropped as bullets flashed through the air where her head used to be.

Samantha: “Found the hacker!”

Samantha pulled one of her knock out gas grenades out of a belt pouch and popped the pin and tossed it inside. She had Bob working on breaking the encryption into Rose’s wireless networks. Samantha didn’t want to fire into the room. The brief glance she had gotten told her that it was the access point and had Rose’s clones in it. She didn’t want to damage the terminal there and trigger some kind of last resort scorched earth contingency plan of Rose’s. It would be just like the bitch to booby trap it. She wanted to be very careful because Rose was batshit crazy enough to destroy all her clones if it meant taking everyone with her. Who has a hidden room on a blimp? Oh right, she forgot crazy paranoid psychos out to destroy the world.

Samantha: “Be careful firing into the room. The access terminal and clones are in there. Rose probably has some kind of contingency last resort measures set up on this room. If we destroy the terminal, who knows what it will trigger. Keep your masks on. A knock out grenade was deployed.”

Samantha ordered Bob to try and isolate and lock down all signals going into and out of that room. Samantha used an armored foot to kick a hole in the drywall next to the door. She pulled some tools out of her pouch and made the hole wider. She began to root around in the wall. She pulled out a mass of wires.

Samantha grinned as she called out. "Jackpot! Cover me while I try to do something about this."

She grinned as she sorted out the cable for the network in the room. She paired back the wires and used a it to splice in her own terminal from where she sat. She began to work her way past the encryptions and security. She spliced in a signal splitter into the line to try and block the hacker's access from the terminal inside the hidden room.

Paul felt like he had been in a holding pattern after the Auckland race. He had flown home to spend some time with his mother before he had to be back at headquarters for the press conference. It had been a surprisingly pleasant visit. They discussed racing and the usual tension between them was not there. His mother listened to his experiences and asked questions that showed she had watched the race. In the past his mother would have arranged a party or an outing of some kind. This time it was just the two of them. It was the most relaxed he had been with his mother since he had started racing.

He could tell that it still bothered her that he was racing but she was no longer actively standing in his way. Her support had changed the dynamic in their relationship. They had a long serious conversation about her worries and he had been honest with her. He had a much better understanding of his mother than he ever had before. She had explained what she knew about his father’s death. She also explained to him what Knight had told her about that night all those years ago. She had sworn him to secrecy about it. She told him that he could trust Alexander Knight. Paul had told her that he would try but they were still getting to know one another. The information she had shared also made him angry. All these years he had thought his father’s death had been a tragic accident. Now he thought there might have been more sinister influences involved. He might never know but he would be careful and project himself.

Paul had decided he wanted to drive back to headquarters from his mother's home. He had wanted to feel the vehicle underneath him. It made him feel closer to his father who had raced formula one before antigravity. He had developed a love of classic cars and had inherited his father’s collection. He had chosen to drive his father’s classic 2020 Bugatti. He had it converted to use biofuel so he could continue to drive it. Feeling the rush of speed that came from the power of its racing engine and the friction of the tires on the pavement. It just did something that made him feel connected to his past and his father. The rest of the world seemed to fade away as it was just him and the open road. He always felt as if his father's was riding with him in the passenger seat. It always relaxed him to drive.

He thought the press conference had gone well. Paul was still playing neutral but he was warming up to Alexander Knight. He had gotten to know Dorian better as well. They were getting along okay. Dorian had seemed to relax finally and showed he had a sense of humor occasionally. He wasn’t surprised to be asked to stick around headquarters and to work out of the training facility. He had an apartment on campus so he could do so. He had been surprised to get an email notifying him that he was needed for a team meeting in the training facility on Friday. He had gotten Alexander’s video message like the rest of the employees.

He was grateful that Alexander finally shared his plan to make changes. Not knowing had left him feeling unsettled. He had just stepped into the pro league and was left feeling like he didn’t know what was expected of him. He knew what Dominic Ricci had wanted from him and what methods he was willing to go through to get it. Paul would at least admit to himself that Ricci’s methods made him a little nervous. He wanted to win and be competitive but he felt that Ricci’s methods were an impairment to his skills, not a support. The drugs he wanted him to use made him feel jittery and out of focus. Knight still needed to fill Paul and Dorian in on the details.

Paul had shown up for the meeting and was surprised to see the entire medical and training teams waiting. He had been a good sport when the training team shoved a frankensteined practice suit into his arms and told him to go change. It was similar to his standard suit but it had obviously had some additional sensors and circuitry added to it. Paul had noticed the new simulator as well. It looked very different to the previous version. He was curious about how it worked and what the changes would be. After he came out of the dressing room, he joined Dorian. The support personnel gathered around them. It was the first time that Paul had seen them so excited as a group. Normally he saw one or two of them. This was the first time he had seen the entire group together. It was obvious they were excited about the changes. Their excitement was contagious as their warm chatter surrounded them.

Paul exchanged amused glances with Dorian. Then Alexander had arrived and the excitement level in the training room went up. Paul smiled as he was carried along with the crowd. Paul listened carefully as Alexander finally began to share the details that he had been hoping for. He looked confused. He was already training in the simulator. They were already on a strict diet. Free diving techniques? How was that supposed to help him as an antigravity racer? Paul shared his confusion as the team explained the plan in more detail and answered his questions. He was willing to put in the time and train harder. He was willing to put in the work to get better.

Paul was getting excited about the new simulator. He couldn't wait to try it out. He slapped Dorian on the back and told him he would race him to the pool later. He was eager to get into the simulator. He wanted to know how much better it would be than the current simulator. The current simulator was a virtual reality full immersion rig but it lacked something compared to the real experience. Paul listened to Alexander explain what he wanted them to work on and do. He understood the need for the team to do some research with them on the new simulator. He was skeptical about the gains from some of the other things they were going to try but like Dr. Thorkelson said, what could it hurt to try? Paul had been off campus on Tuesday morning when all the drama at headquarters had happened. He had heard about it though from some of the employees. So he could understand why Knight was hammering home the point they were one team. He had met pilots who were primadonnas and thought everyone was there to serve them at their beck and call. Paul respected the team and the hard work they put in to help him. Finally Alexander released them to go back to his office.

Paul was eager to try the simulator but they wanted Dorian to go first. He fidgeted as he waited for his turn. He paced around the room as he waited. Finally it was Paul’s turn. He put his helmet on and the technicians moved around him as they connected his suit to the simulator. Paul braced himself as they plugged in his neural port on the side of his skull. There was always a rush as his consciousness seemed to expand. The information that came rushing in with the neural link established was almost overwhelming. Paul had trained to help him adjust and use the information. He took a few moments to breathe deeply and focus on his connection with the craft.

Paul could tell the difference between the old simulator and the new one right away. He had no clue what programming, sensors, or voodoo they used but the simulated environment felt more real like when he was connected to the ship. The previous virtual reality simulator didn’t provide as much information as he got from the ship. The input he was receiving from this simulator even though they were being fed in via the computer programming felt like he was getting the same telemetry from the ship. Then the trainer cleared him to start and suddenly he was back in Auckland racing from the back of the pack.

He could feel the g forces pulling at his body and slamming him around inside the simulator. His adrenaline spiked just as if he was in the ship on the track. He whooped and laughed as he put the ship through its paces. He could tell it was a simulator though. His ship’s systems were tuned to how he operated. The simulator seemed to be lacking those tweaks that the mechanics made the ship that much better. The simulator was still better than before. Before he knew it, the simulation had ended and the technicians were climbing all around the rig to unhook him. He took a deep breath and exhaled sharply as they unplugged his neural chip. He climbed out of the cockpit and began to give feedback to the team.

Paul: “When do I get to use it again?”

Dr. Ainsworth: “We need to pour over the data from the baseline runs. Then you and Dorian will be given a schedule for training that will include time in the simulator.”

The technicians proceeded to nick pick the details of his experience. It took him almost an hour to satisfy everyone’s questions. Then it was time to get his daily workout done. He loved running and had no issues with the treadmill. He was not fond of circuit training but he knew it was necessary for stamina and strength. To his surprise it was not just Agnes Poulsen, his physical trainer who came to work with him and Dorian. They were joined by Sasha Volkova, the team Physical Therapist, Dr. Ainsworth the team Cognitive Neural Specialists, and Dr. Ishikawa the Augmentation Technician. He was curious what was going to change now.

Dr. Ainsworth smiled at Paul and explained what was going to happen now.

Dr. Ainsworth: “Alright Paul we are going to try something new with you this morning. We are going to try combining some old fashioned techniques from our various disciplines. In the past physical therapy was used to help heal existing injuries. The exercises in physical therapy were targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles around an injured area to prevent reinjury and regain lost function. There is a branch of physical therapy that was designed to help people recover fine motor skills. They used targeted exercises to strengthen and regain lost dexterity and agility. There are therapies that were developed to help those who had a stroke regain the ability to speak and lost motor function. These therapies could rebuild neural pathways, reconnecting the body to the brain. Cognitive therapies were and are still used to help those suffering from diseases such as Alzheimers and Dementia. Cognitive therapies work to help the elderly and people suffering from these diseases to retain mental awareness and flexibility. It helps them maintain decision making and function. We will be combining these techniques with the hopes of training your body and mind to build and strengthen new neural pathways between your body and your neural chip while improving your speed and reflexes. We are also hoping to help you improve your reaction times and reflexes by building muscle memory and faster cognitive response times. For the first part of this session, you will be running on the treadmill and playing a video game at the same time. We are also going to plug your neural chip into the game. The object is to keep running while you play the game using your neural chip. As you get used to it, then we will increase the complexity. Then you will move into circuit training and will be adding the new exercises from Sasha to help build twitch muscle response. While you are working out today, we will be asking you math questions and the like to engage your brain along with your body. Agnes will be putting you through your normal workout and be in charge of ensuring proper form. Ready to try it?”

Paul was intrigued as he listened to their explanation. Hell, if it worked for people who were suffering from a stroke, it had to do something for him. It couldn’t hurt. He was amused to think that therapies used to treat such debilitating illnesses would be used to help athletes win.

Paul just smiled and nodded. Paul: “It sounds interesting. Let’s try it.”

It was over an hour later and Paul was sweating profusely and trying to suck air into his lungs. He was slamming down water as fast as he could drink it. That was the hardest workout he had ever endured. He was both physically and mentally exhausted. It was a lot more difficult for him than he had thought it would be. It is one to focus on your form while you are running and letting your mind wander where it will or thinking over a problem. It is another to keep running while trying to solve complex problems quickly. He had stumbled and almost fallen at times. His neural chip was feeding him biofeedback information such as his blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels.

After a quick shower, Paul had been in the pool. Agnes had him doing some special deep breathing exercises before retrieving colored weights from the bottom of the pool. After another shower, to get the chlorine off. Paul was put into the hyperbaric chamber for his first oxygenation session. He had some time to reflect about the day and on the changes. Paul could definitely see how this training would benefit him in the long run. He had thought he was already in top condition and had everything dialed in. This was taking what he thought was possible to new heights. Paul was determined to work harder than ever before.

Ebrima: ”Get a room, you two. One without bioweapons in it.”

Chuck just chuckled, sounding downright happy as he replied.

Chuck: “Well I can’t deny that I would love that but Ebrima do you think it is a smart idea to potentially insult Freya? Not to mention our lovely Battle Goddess could rip your arms off and feed them to you if you piss her off. I am pretty sure her siblings would help her. You do know her father’s temper is legendary right? Besides, the plan is to kill Artemis and woo the lady respectfully first. I like my heads attached to my body, you know.”

Chuck had run headlong into battle. They needed to deal with this damn toxin. Chuck had just taken out four guards as their group engaged the guards coming towards them. Ebrima had gone high and left as he had charged towards the center of the space. Chuck heard heavy clunking up from behind him. He turned back towards the center after kicking a soldier into the wall. Three men in exos were coming towards him. One of them was a giant like chuck. He was in the biggest exo unit that Chuck had ever seen. He easily topped Chuck’s impressive height by about a foot because of the exo. He was more muscular than Chuck as well. He had a nasty jagged scar running down the left side of his face that bisected his eye. The eye itself was cybernetic and glowed a neon blue. The man was shaved bald but had a blonde beard. The black tattoos that ran up the side of his neck identified him as Russian.

Chuck went straight for the giant as the giant surged towards him. The titans met in the middle with a horrendous crash of sound. The groaning and tearing sound of metal could be heard. The exo clad soldier on the left tried to get around Chuck to engage Ban while the one on the right lifted his gun and began firing at Ebrima. Chuck was knocked back as the Russian slammed his boot into his side. Chuck was lifted off the floor by the strength of the blow. Chuck’s fist slammed into the knee joint of the exo in an attempt to immobilize or slow down his opponent. The giant managed to dodge. The tearing sound was some of the outer layer of Chuck’s armor being torn by the blow. Chuck spun and lashed out with an armored boot as the one on the left was trying to get past him. His foot connected with the soldier’s chest and knocked him off his feet. He managed to dent the man’s armor and he was down for the moment. Chuck spun back around and launched a fist at the Russian’s armored head. Chuck’s fist was stopped by the man’s helmet but he managed to crack the helmet.

The Russian growled and shook his head, raising his heavy guns up and taking a shot at Chuck. Chuck didn’t see the Russian because he had turned his back on him to engage the other exo clad soldier that was targeting Ebrima. He managed to surprise the man in the exo from behind. Chuck wrapped his arms around the man and caught his armored head in a lock. Chuck applied his augmented strength and began fighting the enhanced strength of the exo as he tried to break the man’s neck. You could hear actuators whining and metal being stretched. Chuck let out a scream of effort as he put his all into it. There was a popping and tearing noise and Chuck felt the resistance give. At that moment Chuck took a hit to his back as the heavy caliber bullets from the giant ripped into his back plate.

Chuck spun and began dodging but there wasn’t a lot of room for that in here. The Russian managed to continue to hit Chuck. Chuck lifted his wrist and sent some taser flechettes from his wrist launchers towards the Russian. They hit his suit and didn’t seem to even slow him down. He didn’t want to switch to armor piercing rounds because they still had to neutralize the toxin. They didn’t want to pierce the tank and release the toxin before it had been neutralized. Chuck knew what he had to do. He charged towards the Russian, taking heavy fire as he went. He needed to get close enough to grapple with him again. Chuck kept charging even as he felt his armor weakening as he felt pain along the rib cage. He let out a battle cry as he tackled the Russian giant taking him down off his feet. Chuck and Russian began a metal suited wrestling match. The Russian was very good. Chuck couldn’t get a hold on him. Chuck was hard pressed to hold his own. The Russian managed to break Chuck’s armor further and worked a knife in between his ribs as Chuck slammed his knife home up from beneath the man’s chin where his armor was weakest.

Chuck: "Damn that hurts!"

Chuck pulled the knife out as quickly as he could. He pulled an emergency dressing out of the first aid kit in his thigh armor. He opened the pressure dressing and slapped over the knife wound hopefully sealing it up. Chuck groaned as he managed to roll over and get up on his knees with a grunt of pain. He used one of the algae racks to help pull himself to his feet. His voice was gritty as he asked for a sitrep over comms.

Chuck: “Is the toxin neutralized yet?”

Chuck was looking around trying to get a sense of what was happening in the battle. He had lost track of the greater battle while he dealt with the giant. He was feeling a little disoriented.

Valkyrie Training Facility

Alexander was grateful to be out of his office and finally able to start the actual work in motion. He was on his way to the training center where he was meeting with the pilots, the entire medical team, and the training team. The medical and training team had spent most of Thursday reconfiguring the training center to build, modify, and install the changes to the equipment that were going to be needed. Alexander was impressed that the new simulator was already ready. The board members with the European Union Space Agency had come through by donating a base training rig they use for training astronauts. The engineers, mechanics, and training technicians had already reconfigured and added the rig components to build the new simulator the way they wanted.

The Medical Team was excited to be able to integrate all the monitoring systems for pilots that they wanted. New medical sensors provided by another board member with Biomatter International will give more detailed and live readings about what was going on with the pilot’s bodies as they experienced. The new sensors were developed for augmentation technology and included measurements for neural activity, kidney function, and toxicity levels with more sensitive readings for heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and glucose levels. Alexander knew these changes would have taken more time without the board members' support. The only catch to their help was that they had to share the research and data with them. Alexander felt that was a fair trade. It had been worth the time he had taken to win their support and his restraint. He still wanted to punch a few of them but he was glad he had tamped down on the urge to do it.

Alexander was looking around at the changes to the area. He hadn’t been here since they started since he had been busy doing other things. Besides, he needed to show his team that he trusted them to get the work done. They didn’t need him hovering over their shoulder micromanaging them. He was surprised to note that the space felt more open. It took him a moment to figure out what had changed. The training section had modular features to facilitate changes as they came up. The gym section had been opened up a little to include some new medical monitoring systems. The new simulator was larger and was set into some steel braces on a platform with steel scaffolding on it with steps leading up to it. There was a bank of 4 computer workstations built into the side opposite the stairs. Alexander could see the open framework design with hydraulics and electric motors that would drive the system. The interlocking gyroscope design with gimbals looked like something you would see at an amusement park or in a science fiction movie. Alexander knew that would allow the simulator to make the pilot feel like they were actually moving in any direction.

Alexander smiled as he approached the crowd of people with Paul and Dorian at the center. Paul and Dorian were in the new training suits with embedded sensors in them. They looked like they were wearing the bastard creation of a space suit and a diving suit. They were ugly and not very pretty to look at but hey fashion could take a back seat to quick and practical.

Everyone was chatting and there was a sense of excitement in the air. No one had noticed Alexander’s entrance yet. The pilots looked amused as the medical and training personnel around them were trying to share all the details with them but were using trade jargon that they didn’t understand. The pilots were the superstars of the team and their coworkers wanted to impress them. Alexander was satisfied to note that the air of anxiety and uncertainty was gone. He had sent out an email detailing the restructuring changes and how they would work yesterday after the board meeting. There was some expected confusion as details were hammered out and clarifications made. So far the changes were being embraced by the majority of the staff. There were a few older hands unhappy about the changes who grumped there was nothing wrong with the way they had been doing things.

Alexander was amused to note that it was Dorian who spotted him first. Dorian gave him a wave of his hand in greeting. Alexander waved back but the motion had people turning around to see who Dorian had waved at. The excited murmur got louder for a moment as everyone turned towards him before quieting down.

Alexander smiled as he addressed the group.

Alexander: “Good morning. Today we start getting ready for Africa. We are making changes as fast as we can to shift to the needs of the season. The first thing we are going to do is some research with the help of our pilots.”

Alexander nodded at Dorian and Paul who looked interested.

Alexander: “The team has developed a new simulator with the help of those snazzy new suits you are wearing that will give the medical team some new information on what happens to pilots during a race. The new simulators will allow you to run any track virtually like you would in your ship. The new rigging will put your body through the same forces and movements you would experience in the cockpit during the race. It is as close to experiencing the real thing as we can get without putting you on the track. The medical and training team will be working in conjunction to support both of you as they put you through some new training regimes. These will include what our team is calling cognitive reflex training which is a method used to strengthen neural chip reaction times and cognitive speed. A new physical training component that will take place in the swimming pool. They will be teaching you freediving techniques to help strengthen your lungs and expand its capacity. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be utilized to increase the amount of oxygen you can hold at one time. All of these training techniques will work to strengthen your natural talents and your ability to use your augmentations with the focus of increasing your reflex reaction speeds and active decision making. Oh and the nutritionist will be working with Chef Jacques to ensure that you are getting targeted micronutrients to strengthen eyesight, reflex speed, and cognition. These techniques will make the most of what you already have. Do you have any questions?”

Dorian looked puzzled: “I thought we were already doing a lot of this. I mean we already eat incredibly healthy. How is changing our diet supposed to help?”

Dr. Thorkelson stepped forward to answer that question.

Dr. Thorkelson: “Dorian you are correct. But there are changes we can make to your diet to ensure you are getting nutrition that specifically benefits the health of the eye for example to ensure eyehealth. Likewise there are specific foods that can help maintain cognitive function. Any benefits you see from these changes will take time. While we can’t guarantee you will see any benefits from these foods, you might. Isn’t it worth it to try?”

Dorian looked thoughtful.

Paul looked unsure and confused as he asked: “Freediving techniques but I am a pilot not a diver.”

Volkova stepped forward to champion her idea.

Volkova: “Free divers in Japan have been trained to retrieve pearl oysters from the seafloor long before scuba diving technology was available. They trained their bodies to be able to hold more air and developed techniques to help their bodies oxygenate and enrich their bloodstream so that they could dive deeper for longer. Their techniques will help you strengthen your lungs so they work better, expand your lung capacity so you can breathe in more oxygen, and combined with the hyperbaric oxygen therapy, should give you a significant gain in performance. Your body will be developing more red blood cells which means more oxygen. Your body will be training to gain more oxygen and hold it longer under pressure. This will help you in the race when your body is experiencing g forces which puts pressure on your lungs. You should handle the forces better without a loss in cognitive function or reaction times.”

Paul looked surprised as he looked over at Dorian who was looking just as surprised.

Dorian grinned. He had been worried that Knight was going to focus on Paul and ignore his needs for this season. It was not an approach that Dorian had never thought about. There were so many small subtle things. Could they really add up to an advantage on the racetrack? He could see now what Alexander had meant when he said their new approach was going to be focusing on the needs of the pilot.

Dorian: “Well what are we waiting for? Let’s get started!”

Paul laughed and slapped Dorian on the back.

Paul: “I will race you to the pool later. What’s first?”

Alexander laughed and shook his head. Pilots were always about speed and competition. He couldn’t help but laugh at Paul’s characteristic response of challenging Dorian. It reminded him so much of his father. It brought back memories of Audrick’s smiling face as he challenged him to race wherever they were going. He pushed away the sadness that came with the memory and focused on the here and now.

Alexander: “First the simulator. You are each going to run the Auckland race again to establish a baseline for the staff to work from. Then you will be at Volokova’s tender mercies. If you have any questions about anything, they are here to answer your questions. We are a team and support one another. They know the answers better than me. Come find me after you are done today if you have any more questions about the new training regime. The Engineering Team is working to make the ships faster before Africa without sacrificing our edge in handling and stability. Once those changes are worked out and tested, you will test the changes first in the simulator and then on the test track. I want those ships dialed in before Africa. You will be spending a lot of time in the cockpit next week as they work to get the ships ready for Africa. Dorian you and Paul will need to be honest and share what you are experiencing with the team so they can help adjust the ship or the training to better support you. So be honest about your challenges. If you need something and aren’t getting it for whatever reason, you come talk to me about it. We will work on it to see if we can get it. Understood?”

There was an eager anticipatory feeling in the air now with an undercurrent of excited energy. Alexander smiled as that is how it should feel around here.

Alexander turned to the support personnel in the room to address them.

Alexander: “All of you are part of this team. Their success in the cockpit is due to your success here in this room. You are important to the work we do here. If you see something, have a thought, then speak up. Valkyrie will work best as a team. So bring your passion and your ideas and share your knowledge with everyone. We succeed or fail as a team, not individuals. Understood?”

Alexander gave Dorian and Paul a serious look as he met their eyes.

Alexander: “Dorian and Paul never forget that while you pilot the ship you are supported by a team. You are not alone in this. Listen to their guidance. Make your own decisions but understand they are here to help you. All of the changes being made and implemented were proposed by team members already working here. These approaches were suggested and discarded by previous leadership. Everyone has their area of expertise and deserves your respect. You both already show a great respect for your colleagues but they need to hear from you not me. Make sure your words and actions reflect that.”

Alexander lightened the mood as he gave them a brilliant smile full of warmth.

Alexander: “Now all you miscreants get back to work. We have races to win!”

Alexander was rewarded by loud cheering and laughter by the excited bunch. He left them to get started. They would perform better and bond easier without him there. Besides, he had a meeting with the marketing team. Katherine had some stuff to go over with him.

Alexander’s Office

Alexander had made it back to his office and was attempting to get another cup of coffee when Mabel gracefully intercepted him by taking the empty cup out of his hand and hip checking him away from the coffee machine. She put a decaf pod in and then started the machine. Alexander put his hands on his hips and glared at her.

Alexander: “Mabel I am perfectly capable of making my own damn coffee.”

Mabel gave him a sickly sweet innocent look and crossed her arms.

Mabel: “Alex, I know for a fact that you have already had over 4 cups of coffee this morning. I also know you have been averaging about 4 hours of sleep a night. You need a solid night’s rest. No more caffeine for you today. No arguments.”

Alexander gave her a glowering look.

Alexander: “Mabel I love you but I am a grown ass man. If I want to drink coffee then I can have a cup of coffee.”

Mabel patted him condescendingly on the shoulder.

Mabel: “Don’t sulk Alexander. It is not a good look for the boss.Besides you are getting coffee. Decaffeinated coffee.”

Alexander threw his hands up in the air and gave up walking back to his desk. He began logging into the computer. All at once it dawned it on him that she had known how many cups of coffee he had so far today. Alexander narrowed his eyes as he paused and looked up at her as she brought him his coffee.

Alexander: “Wait a minute… How did you know how many cups of coffee I have had so far today?”

Mabel sat down in one of the plush black leather chairs across from his desk for visitors. She gave him a sly smile and a wink.

Mabel: “I have my ways. Now shall we get to work?”

Alexander shook his head. He would never learn how she found out all she did. She never ceased to amaze him. He nodded and finished booting up his computer. He absentmindedly grabbed the coffee cup and took a sip. He winced and set it back down. It just didn’t taste the same. He sighed and pulled up his schedule.

Mabel: “Next on your schedule today is the meeting with Katherine to go over marketing and public relations issues. The only other important meeting you have today is with Wulfric and Leopold to discuss the investigation into Maier and Zimmerman’s activities. I have already prioritized your inbox for you. You can work on clearing up those details in between meetings. Let me know if you want me to weed out any more of the insignificant stuff for you. I can handle the logistics details if you want me to. This frees up more of your time from dealing with approvals on the number of screws we order and the supplier for the toilet paper.”

Alexander nodded. “Thank you Mabel. I am fine with you handling the standard purchase authorizations with my authority. Send any unusual purchases to me or anything over say $10,000 euros. Is there anything else we need to discuss? Katherine should be here any minute.”

Mabel: “I will Katherine fill you in on the latest gossip. Do you want me to stay for the meeting?”

Alexander nodded. “Yes, because your wisdom is always helpful. I value your insight.”

Mabel just smiled fondly at him and nodded.

Mabel: “Great! Because I can’t wait to see your face when she tells you what is on the agenda.”

Alexander didn’t have any time to try and figure out what Mabel went as he called out come-in. He was pretty sure the knock on the door was Katherine as it was time for their meeting.

Katherine opened the door and shut entering Alexander’s office. She was dressed more casually today in nice tan slacks and a flowy tank top blouse in a blush color and brown leather flats. Her hair was down around her shoulders in soft chestnut waves. She was carrying her tablet with her. She moved quickly to take the other chair in front of Alexander’s desk.

Katherine smiled at Mabel greeting her.

Katherine: “Good Morning Mabel and Alexander. Thank you so much for your help yesterday Mabel. I never expected the press to ask you a question. You handled it well though. My thanks.”

Mabel’s eyes sparkled merrily as she chuckled remembering yesterday’s press conferences.

Mabel: “Good morning Katherine. It was good to remind them that older people are still in the workforce too. Shame on them for assuming.”

Alexander smiled at Katherine and nodded in agreement.

Alexander: “Hello Katherine. I agree Mabel handled it well. Even if it was at my expense.”

Katherine just chuckled. She was more at ease around Alexander now that Mabel was here. Mabel’s information and help had been invaluable to her in understanding Alexander’s triggers where the media was concerned. Katherine opened her tablet and gave them both a smile.

Katherine: “Are you ready to start the meeting?”

Alexander nodded: “Let’s get to work. What do you have for me?”

Katherine: “Yesterday’s press conference was a success. Valkyrie AGR Sport was at least mentioned on most of the major news outlets globally. Some of the questions asked by the journalists have started some rumors you need to be aware of. I am not sure how we are going to address them just yet. So far they sound like the typical conspiracy theory nut jobs focused on your appointment at Valkyrie. However, I need to know from you if I need to be concerned.”

Katherine gave Alexander a serious face as she continued. Alexander raised an eyebrow and waited for her to continue.

Katherine: “The EUGossip is a notorious celebrity gossip news outlet. They are just as likely to make up news if it's a slow week as they are to actually have a story that has facts behind it. It has enough plausibility that it is staying alive so far on social media. They posted a story that while you were personally cleared by investigators that your former racing team had the investigation into Audrick Mulder’s death shut down. What can you tell me about what happened, Alexander?”

Mabel looked concerned at the information Katherine shared.

Alexander looked surprised and then thoughtful and angry as he tried to decide what he could share. He worded his answer very carefully. Alexander allowed the pain and sadness he felt about his friend’s death to show as he spoke. His voice was laced with remembered pain and shame.

Alexander: “Audrick Mulder was a fellow competitor and also my best friend. I met him when I started racing Formula AG. We were friendly rivals. We often pranked each other on the track. We hung out and spent time together socially in between races. His team was my team’s biggest competition back then. Please understand that there are things I am not allowed to tell you. I am bound by nondisclosure agreements to my former team.”

Alexander paused for a moment and had a confused look as he looked at Katherine.

Alexander: “Or are nondisclosure agreements voided if the team they were signed for has dissolved? I will need to have the team counsel check on that.”

Katherine was looking worried now. She sat forward on the edge of her chair. Nerves and worry threaded through her voice.

Katherine: “I understand the need for secrecy. I want to help you but I need to know what you know.”

Alexander looked at Katherine once more, debating how much he could tell her.

Mabel reached across the desk and put her hand gently on his arm. Her voice was soft as she told Alexander.

Mabel: “Alexander she will need to know all of it if she is going to help get you through the shit storm I feel brewing on the horizon.”

Alexander looked over at Mabel surprised. He had told her everything once. He had been feeling down about something and had gotten drunk. She had managed to get the whole story out of him. So she knew the truth. Alexander bowed his head and took a deep shuddering breath as he began.

Alexander: “Katherine you will need to keep this information between us three. No one else can hear any of these details until I have checked with the legal department about the non-disclosure agreement with my former team.”

Katherine gave Alexander what she hoped was a trustworthy look.

Katherine: “I am already bound by my NDA for Valkyrie. I won’t disclose any details that could hurt the team.”

Alexander sighed as voice was filled with grief, pain, embarrassment, and guilt most of all as he began to tell her what happened.

Alexander: “The team I was driving for had hired a new crew chief and engineer. The team owner had been hungry for a win. They were putting pressure on me to drive more aggressively. They wanted me to use shady tactics on the track that skirted safety rules. I refused to drive dirty for them. The night before the championship race I had gone to wish Audrick good luck before the race. When I left, I saw one of my team mechanic’s coming out of Audrick’s team garage. The next day a few laps into the race, I saw Audrick’s ship jerk hard to the right and it lifted off the track. The ship began to tumble and bounce down the track. On the fourth bounce, the ship exploded into a fiery ball. The explosion was big enough they had to stop the race. Parts from the ship had been launched into the crowded grandstand. There were injured people everywhere. I lost my best friend that day. I don’t have any proof they tampered with his ship. I can’t help wondering if I have said something to Audrick that he might still be here. I had no idea why the mechanic was there. It was common for teams to borrow a tool or shoot the breeze together. Competition was more friendly back then or so I thought. But I somehow knew in my gut when I saw Audrick’s ship explode that they had something to do with it. I confronted the team owner and crew chief. They had an ironclad NDA and forbade me to say anything. I quit. I refused to race any more. They sued me for breach of contract. They massacred me and vilified me using the press. Alicia Mulder knows what I do. I couldn’t withhold the truth from her. She didn’t blame me for Audrick’s death but I was also a reminder of who she had lost. We were almost inseparable back then. I spent a lot of time at their house when Paul was just a toddler. I can’t tell you if the racing team had managed to shut down the investigation. It wouldn’t surprise me if they bought off investigators or somehow influenced the outcome in their favor.”

Mabel was watching Alexander with a compassionate expression on her face. She knew that he still beat himself up for what happened to his friend. Katherine had a horrified look on her face. She looked shocked and surprised. Mabel couldn’t help wondering if it was because she was still a nice person. Katherine seemed very kind and naive for a professional her age who dealt with public relations. She wondered how she had managed to avoid the dark underbelly in racing so far.

Alexander managed to pull himself back together. He gave Katherine a serious look.

Alexander: “Katherine you absolutely must keep this information absolutely secret. No one can know. At least not until the legal department and I have a conversation about it. You now know the worst of it.”

Katherine had tears running down her face. Mabel handed her a tissue. She used it to wipe her face. She sniffled a few times as she got herself under control. Mabel patted her comfortingly this time on the hand.

Katherine: “Alexander, I am so sorry you went through that. I can see why you want it kept silent. Especially with all the allegations that you had something to do with Audrick’s death. That must have hurt so much.”

Katherine’s resolve strengthened as she scooted back in the chair relaxing her posture once more.

Katherine: “Thank you for trusting me with this Alexander. At least now I can get ahead of it, and know where to focus my investigation if these rumors persist. I think you should have a talk with Wulfric as well. This might be important to your security in the future. He will have different questions than me. I am sure he would appreciate at least a list of names of people you suspected had been involved. That way we can keep potential spies out of our camp.”

Alexander nodded, feeling emotionally drained. He tried to put his focus back on the business of running the team. He only sounded slightly grumpy as he told her.

Alexander: “I have a meeting with Wulfric and Leopold later today. I will speak with them personally about it. Do you have anything else for me?”

Alexander missed the anticipatory gleam in Mabel’s eyes.
Katherine smiled and had to admire his ability to push such a deeply emotional topic back into the past and move on with business. Katherine looked down at her tablet.

Katherine: “After yesterday’s press conference, we were approached by a new potential sponsor. I have forwarded the contract to you for review. It is a men’s fashion company and they are offering an endorsement deal of $10 million euros. There is only one catch.”

Katherine grinned at him and Mabel looked suspiciously like a cat playing with a mouse.

Alexander: “Okay so what is the catch? So far it sounds like a typical sports wear type of sponsorship.”

Katherine chuckled as she informed him of their requirements.

Katherine: “The catch is that it is a line of formal wear for men in business that cater to older men. They want you and Dorian for models. The stipulation is that there is no deal without you. You both would have to agree to model for them in at least one fashion show at fashion week in London and at least one major photo campaign.”

Alexander’s mouth fell open in shock. When he had been in racing he had done the obligatory commercials and photo shoots for sports drinks and alcohol and cars. He had never been asked to do anything with high fashion. His job was now behind the scenes. He could understand them wanting Dorian since he was billed as the gentleman’s racer. Alexander had always been the bad boy of racing and the wild card.

Mabel was laughing her ass off. She pointed at Alexander and confided in Katherine.

Mabel: “Do you know how hard it is to surprise that man? This is priceless!”

Mabel slapped her knee and just laughed before wiping the tears out of her eyes. She turned to Katherine with amusement in her eyes still as she asked her.

Mabel: “Well bless their hearts. They don’t know what they are asking. Do you really think Alexander can pull off high fashion?”

Katherine was amused at both of their reactions. She winked at Mabel.

Katherine: “Evidently the fashion designers were inspired by the press conference. They want to make a whole new line based on Alexander and call it the Knight Collection. They are going to call the line inspired by Dorian the “The Distinguished Gentleman Collection. I know Dorian can handle his bit in this. He will still have to review the contracts and sign them along with Alexander. I didn’t want to send it to him without checking with Alexander first.”

It took Alexander a moment or two to get over the shock. He knew securing sponsorships was going to be a part of his job. He just didn’t think he would be the one in front of the camera again.

Alexander was confused as to why a high fashion company would want racing sponsorships. They were outside the norm for the industry. Alexander shook his head and smiled ruefully at the women.

Alexander: “Help me out here Katherine. Other than the use of Dorian and Myself as models, what does the fashion house want out of the sponsorship in terms of the team?”

Katherine smiled and looked down at her notes before answering.

Katherne: “They want to be named the team’s official designer. They have offered to make all the suits the guys might use for things like charity events, award ceremonies, that kind of thing. Anytime you or they are in public or in a situation that calls for formal wear they want a contract that you will be wearing their designs. They are hoping to attract a new demographic of clients, active middle aged and older men. Their current demographic and target market is conservative older men. They don’t want to compete in the high fashion market for young wearers. They are hoping to attract a demographic somewhere in the middle. They also want to design the team's new racing suits. That is the other mandatory part of the contract.”

Alexander leaned back in his chair as he thought about it. It was certainly different. He didn’t really relish being in the spotlight again but he didn’t really have much choice this deal was too good not to explore it. He winced before he gave a decisive nod.

Alexander: “I will review the contract. It will depend on timing. The appearances at Fashion Week and the photo shoots must be scheduled around the team’s schedule. Races and training come first. They can design the new suits but they will be subject to adhering to racing commission rules and they will have to incorporate the necessary items and materials we require into their designs. They will have to be open to modifications on their designs. Valkyrie retains the right to reject designs that don’t meet our high standards. We have a reputation to maintain. Before I sign the contract I want to see what kind of stuff they design. I am not going down a runway in neon blue feathers!”

Mabel just laughed again and made some notes on her tablet. She knew who would be doing the research for Alexander. Mabel’s voice dripped innocence as she told Alexander.

Mabel: “I don’t know Alexander, you might look very dashing in feathers.”

Katherine was the one laughing now. She made some notes on her tablet as she chuckled.

Katherine: “I don’t know Mabel. I don’t think neon blue is Alexander’s color. Maybe neon green.”

Alexander groaned and growled at them both.

Alexander: “Please don’t encourage her! She will find a way to plant that idea in the designer’s head.”

Mabel glared at Alexander and gave him a look of injured innocence.

Mabel: “Alexander you know I have better taste than that. I would suggest black feathers or white if it was formal wear.”

Katherine just gave up and laughed. She had to admit she was getting to love working with Mabel. She never failed to make her laugh at least once each time she interacted with her.

Alexander just gave up and tried to move them along.

Alexander: “Is there anything else we need to discuss?”

Katherine gave Alexander a serious look before she shook her head no.

Katherine: “That’s all I have for you right now. I will keep monitoring those strange comments on social media. You can count on me Alexander. I will send the contracts to legal for review with your notes. I won’t send them to Dorian and Paul until the contracts are signed. I am working on some good will public relations material for charity and some new potential experiences for race fans. I hope to have the details hammered out for you to review next week sometime. Do you need anything else for now?”

Alexander smiled and shook his head.

Alexander: “Not at the moment. You are doing a great job Katherine. If I think of anything I will reach out.”

Mabel snickered and winked at Katherine.

Mabel: “He means he will ask me to reach out for him. Don’t hesitate to come to me if Alexander is busy. I know where all his skeletons are buried. I helped him hide the bodies after all.”

Alexander groaned knowing Mabel was joking but the look on Katherine’s face said she was not sure how to take that comment.

Katherine: “Umm…..”

Mabel hooted with laughter before winking at Katherine.

Mabel: “Gotcha! Girl you are too easy. I meant you can trust me. This is Alexander’s darkest secret and we both know that. I am here to help Katherine.”

Mabel softened her voice and regained a serious expression.

Mabel: “Seriously though, you two need to lighten up before you both have a heart attack.”

Alexander sighed and just smiled.

Alexander: “On that note, I think our meeting is over. And Mabel… behave. Poor Katherine thought you were serious!”

Mabel just rose gracefully to her feet grabbing her tablet and tucking into the crook of her arm.

Mabel: “Alexander if you wanted me to behave you should have left me in retirement. You should know by now that I am too old and stuck in my ways to change now.”

Mabel gave Katherine a saucy wink before turning and leaving the office.

Katherine was smiling as she left right behind the older woman. Katherine thought she had a new role model in life. She wanted to be like Mabel when she was older and wiser.

Alexander wondered if he was going to survive the women at work who seemed to take great pleasure in surprising him.

Wulfric Gunderson’s Office

Wulfric had arranged to have Leopold and Alexander meet him in his office. He knew his office was secure and bug free. He swept the room daily for listening devices, mini drones, and hidden cameras. The walls of his office had electronic countermeasures built into them to secure conversations. There was a white noise generator and circuits that interrupted any kind of electronic transmission when activated. Wulfric hoped he was just being paranoid but one could never be too careful.

Wulfric had greeted Leopold and Alexander and invited them to have a seat on the small couch in the conversational group that was on one half of his office. He took the chair across from them after pouring them each a glass of aged whiskey. Alexander looked at the glass and then at Wulfric.

Alexander: “I take you think we are going to need this?”

Wulfric just nodded. Leopold watched the interaction and downed the whiskey and motioned for Wulfric to pour him another glass.

Leopold: “Okay rip the band aid off Wulfric.”

Alexander just nodded in agreement as he took a fortifying sip of the smoky flavored whiskey. It was smooth but burned all the way down.

Alexander: “Okay now I am worried. This is a very nice whiskey.”

Wulfric looked serious and laid out what he had found so far.

Wulfric: “First the security guard Ivan who had tried to block Mabel’s entry into the building was doing so as a favor to Miss Guyon. He indicated that Miss Guyon had recruited him with sexual favors and had convinced him that he would be working on the orders of a board member and therefore his ass would be covered because they were your boss. That the board was sending a message about who really had the power here at Valkyrie. Interestingly enough, Ivan never thought to question her on which board member.”

Alexander looked a little disgusted but was not surprised.

Alexander: “I hope you schooled him on how easily he was manipulated by her?”

Wulfric blanched a little with embarrassment since it had been one of his men who had made the mistake.

Wulfric: “Oh yes and then we held an emergency training session for all guards to review the incident. What proper protocols are to follow. We also included additional training on how to spot these kinds of manipulations in the future. Their orders are to call and seek clarification from me even if their orders are from a board member.”

Alexander nodded appreciation in that clarification of how he had worked to resolve the issue and prevent it from happening again.

Leopold looked a little surprised at Wulfric’s choice but couldn’t deny that it made sense to make him the security lynchpin. The man seemed to know the political undercurrents within the team

Wulfric moved on to his next person of interest.

Wulfric: “Miss Guyon was wholly Maier’s creature. From what I can tell she made herself an easy target for his manipulation by sleeping with him for a promotion. She then helped hide Maier’s abuses. If he said bury a complaint, the paper trail disappeared and the staff member was let go. She was Maier’s cutout for a lot. She did a lot of his dirty work for him. It is her name on most of the paperwork I found. I then found emails from him to her telling her to handle it. Maier had developed a code that he could insert into the email and once it was read, it would delete itself from the main system. He had given her the promotion and was paying her additional bribes under the table telling her they were thank you gifts from appreciative board members. He made an error in choosing her. Miss Guyon was not very bright and didn’t hide her digital tracks very well. Neither one knew about the backup servers that are located in my office. No one has access to them but me and the board president. We are the only two who even know about them. She did manage to erase the files from the main system but forgot to check the memory cache and temporary files. She was a nasty vindictive piece of work. I have managed to recover video from her interacting with employees in meetings and in the hallways that substantiate her being fired.”

Alexander’s lip curled in disgust he had hated the woman on sight. He had really wanted to turn Mabel loose on the woman but he felt Mabel had enough revenge after seeing her escorted from the building in disgrace.

Leopold looked concerned. How had all this happened on his watch? He had not been paying close enough attention. Or was his attention deliberately being focused elsewhere. He contemplated that as Wulfric continued.

Wulfric looked smug as he admitted to them both.

Wulfric: “I won’t lie. I took great pleasure in escorting them both from the building.”

Wulfric had a satisfied look on his face with the memory. Wulfric sighed and looked worried as he moved on.

Wulfric: “Bernard Maier was smart and clever. He had set up Miss Guyon to take the fall for his actions. Maier was taking bribes from someone. I have his bank account information to prove that. The bribes to Miss Guyon were taken from company accounts. He was embezzling funds from the payroll. Instead of embedding fake employees, he kept the employees who had been let go for filing harassment and discrimination complaints on the books and funneled their paychecks into an account controlled by him. Reviewing Miss Guyon’s accounts showed the activity. When I investigated the other account, it was owned by Bernard Maier. Maier’s bribes are coming from one of those countries where banking account information is privileged and you need to be God to get it. I can’t find out who owns the account. I don’t know who was bribing him.”

Alexander looked concerned at how complex this conspiracy went and wondered how long it had been going on at Valkyrie.

Leopold looked poleaxed by the information. He had expected Maier had something to hide. The embezzlement was more what he was expecting. He had not expected a complex set up that included bribes. He wasn’t surprised that there was a high placed spy or mole within the organization. The fact he was taking bribes though suggests he answered to someone else.

Wulfric: “I don’t like the implications of that but I have no way to move that part of the investigation forward. Dr. Zimmerman’s abuses are well documented in the files that Maier and Guyon thought they had deleted. I will send a summary of findings to you. Interestingly enough, Dr. Zimmerman had been hired and came in on recommendation from former board member Amantas. I didn’t find evidence that Dr. Zimmerman was being bribed. He was just an asshole who had someone powerful covering for him. I wish I knew why. It could be that Dr. Zimmerman was smart enough to keep the account he received bribes in away from all his doings with Valkyrie. I can’t track what I don’t know about. I can hire a private investigator to look into his property holdings but that is all I could find on the good doctor. Dr. Zimmerman avoided social media. He doesn’t have much of an online presence at all. So again that is all I could find out from our systems. I can tell you that Dr. Zimmerman met for lunch once a month with Amantas. I am willing to bet that Amantas was who Dr. Zimmerman was reporting too and who was bribing him. Again I have no idea why.”

Alexander tossed back the rest of the whiskey. It sat sourly in his stomach. He didn’t like the implications from what Wulfric had found out but what could they do?

Leopold leaned heavily back into the couch. He felt like he had been punched in the gut.

Leopold: “Amantas was one of the board members that had pushed using drugs to artificially enhance pilots through chemical means. Amantas was the representative from Brimex Corporation. Chemical manufacturing is one of the things that they are known for. After the altercation with Knight, he stepped down. He said he couldn’t work with Knight. That he was an asshole. So he stepped down so the company wouldn’t suffer.”

Leopold shared what little news he might have to add to the mix.

Wulfric shook his head in aggravation. “Well you can bet there is a connection there. I just don’t have a clue what it is though.”

Alexander sighed and looked down.

Alexander: “Well now I get to add to your bad news. Katherine and Mabel talked me into sharing this story with you both.”

He looked up and met both men’s eyes with a serious expression. His tone was hard as steel as he continued.

Alexander: “I need your word you will not reveal what I am going to share with you. I have been under an NDA and have not been able to talk about this. I will remind you of your NDAs to Valkyrie as well. I mean not one word till hear more back from legal.”

Leopold blanched as the color drained from his face. He was not sure how much more bad news he could take today. Leopold sighed before he responded.

Leopold: “You have my word. No one will hear about it from me.”

Wulfric just nodded as he told Alexander.

Wulfric: “You know the more people that know about a secret the more likely it is to get out right?”

Alexander flinched but at the same time, this was a secret that needed to come out. It was a thorn that had gotten infected. Maybe if it came to light he could finally begin to heal from those events all those years ago. Alexander’s voice was once more full of pain, sadness, and anger today as he recalled the events from his past.

Alexander: “Leopold I know you are aware of part of the story but you don’t know this piece. Audrick Mulder and I met on the racing circuit. He was my competition and my best friend. We were almost inseparable off the track. The year that Audrick died he and I were in the top 5 contenders for the title. Audrick and I were neck and neck taking one and two consistently. The team I was racing for back then had hired a new crew chief and engineer at the start of the season. The team owner was hungry for a win. He seemed desperate for it. They had pressured me to drive more aggressively. They wanted me to shirk some of the safety protocols to go faster. They wanted me to use dirty dangerous tactics on the track. I told them no. I had gone over to Audrick’s team paddock the night before the championship race to wish him luck. When I was coming out, I saw one of my team’s mechanics coming out of Audrick’s garage. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Mechanics back then would often borrow a missing tool from a friend on another team or a part they needed. The next day a few laps into the race Audrick’s ship jerked hard to the right and lifted off the track. On the fourth bounce the craft exploded. I can’t prove anything. But I know in my guy the team owner and crew chief are somehow responsible for what happened that day. I confronted them about what I saw later that day. They cited the NDA and told me I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. I quit right then and there and refused to race anymore. They sued me for breach of contract. Katherine shared with me that rumors are surfacing on Social Media that while I was cleared of any wrongdoing that there is evidence out there that the team I raced for had the investigation into Audrick’s death shut down. She felt that you both should know what is going on.”

Leopold was staring at Alexander. He looked angry.

Wulfric looked contemplative but not surprised.

Alexander sounded so pain ridden and guilty.

Alexander: “Leopold there is nothing you can tell me that I haven’t already thought of myself. I still think what if I had said something to Audrick. Would he have had them double check his ship? Would he still be here? You should know I told Alicia the truth, She deserved to know. She was sworn to secrecy about it. She was worried they might target Paul to keep her silent.”

Leopold looked even angrier than before as he raged at Alexander.

Leopold: “You should have come to me. I could have helped you Alexander. What you are describing is outside the legal bounds of the NDA. The investigation would have taken legal precedence over the NDA.”

Leopold softened his voice and put a comforting hand on Alexander’s shoulder.

Leopold: “I don’t think for a minute that you had anything to do with Audrick’s death. I saw the way you two were together. He was like a brother to you. You loved him. That explains a lot to me about why Alicia was so afraid to let Paul race and why she insisted you be his crew chief.”

Wulfric looked from one man to the other and looked confused.

Wulfric: “Wait a minute. I thought you recruited Alexander. What does Paul’s mother have to do with this?”

Alexander sighed and gave Wulfric another look.

Alexander: “This is another secret you need to keep Wulfric. Paul must never know. Paul’s mother Alicia had tried to keep him from racing because she was afraid that he would be manipulated into severe augmentations, the bad kind you can’t back from. Or that his crew chief would try similar dangerous tactics with him putting his life at risk. So she undercut his confidence by withholding her blessing on the grounds that she didn’t want to lose him like his father to racing. Paul was determined to become a racer like his father. This is his rookie year in the pro circuit. She felt safe letting him come to Valkyrie because she trusted Leopold. She didn’t trust Dominic Ricci. Her refusal to give him her blessing was affecting Paul’s performance. She explained to Leopold that she would only give it if I was his crew chief.”

Leopold looked at Wulfric who was looking more pole axed.

Wulfric had thought he was already dealing with secrets but they just kept coming.

Wulfric: “I understand the need for secrecy. I am the chief of security for crying out loud. Damn Knight, can you bring me any easy issues to solve?”

Leopold was deep in thought but he parroted Alexander’s sentiment.

Leopold: “Wulfric, Paul can never know. It would hurt his relationship with his mother.”

Leopold paused before he shared his thoughts aloud.

Leopold: “Why are these rumors surfacing now? That wreck was one that changed safety regulations but it hasn’t been talked about for years. The only reason it is being talked about now, is your return to racing. So why these rumors about the investigation being squashed? We have seen the rumors resurfaced that you had something to do with the crash too. Wulfric keep your ear to the ground about these rumors. Discreetly hire a good private investigator you can trust. Put them under an ironclad NDA. I want them to investigate Maier, Amantas, and Zimmerman. If they find anything on Audrick’s death and that investigation, I want that too.”

Wulfric tossed back his whiskey.

Wulfric: “I will check into it. I will call a few veterans I trust who might be interested in the work. Would it be okay if I put them on the payroll?”

Alexander nodded before Leopold could answer.

Alexander: “Yes, hire them as a security guard so they get a paycheck. Give them a company card for expenses but tell them to keep the receipts. If I see anything extravagant or out of the ordinary, he better have a damn good explanation. When this is over, you can always use a second in command around here.”

Leopold was startled that Alexander had beat him to the punch but he liked his solution.

Leopold: “I like it. He is right. If something happens to you, I am not sure I can trust in the guards.”

Wulfric looked thoughtful. He did have some mid level guards but no one with as much authority and access as he did. They had a point.

Wulfric nodded. “Okay I can do that. Do you have any more bad news to lay on me?”

Leopold laughed and pointed his finger at Wulfric.

Leopold: “I agree with Wulfric. Do I need any more of his fine whiskey?”

Alexander looked grumpy as he confided in the two of them.

Alexander: “Yes you can talk me out of accepting this new high fashion sponsor that wants to dress me up in a monkey suit to strut down a runway for them. I am the crew chief damn it not the pilot!”

Wulfric held up his hands back away laughing shaking his head no.

Wulfric: “No sir, I suspect Miss Mabel Brown had something to say about this. I am not angering that woman. I would be afraid to lose some precious body parts.”

Leopold just laughed his ass off amused at Alexander’s expense. His voice was full of laughter as he told Alexander.

Leopold: “Nope sorry I can’t do that. Do you have any more good news for me?”

Alexander glowered at Leopold as he answered Leopold.

Alexander: “Company morale is up. The pilots started the new training regime today. The new simulator is already up. They are taking baseline testing today on it.”

Leopold looked at Alexander with pleased surprise.

Leopold: “Well that was more good news. I didn’t expect them to get the new simulator up for at least another few weeks. How did you make that happen so fast?”

Alexander grinned at Leopold as he explained.

Alexander: “Board members from the European Space Union donated a training rig for the techs to cannibalize and new medical sensors were donated by Biomatter International by Steindl. The only catch was we had to share the research data with them. I thought it was a win-win. So I accepted their help.”

Leopold smiled at Alexander.

Leopold: “That is good news to hear after Tuesday.”

Wulfric just laughed at the two of them.

Wulfric: “Well if we are done with our super not so secret meeting. I have some recruiting to do.”

Alexander set his tumbler on the coffee table. He grumbled good naturedly at Wulfric.

Alexander: “I think that is our exit cue. Keep me in the loop as you find things out Wulfric. Remember not a word to anyone. This shit is need to know only. And those who absolutely need to know… know.”

Leopold rose to his feet and followed Alexander’s lead towards the door.

Leopold: “Thank you for the whiskey Wulfric.”

The two men left the office leaving Wulfric to his work.
