• Soccer. Played on the team Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. Primarily positioned at goalie.
• Indoor Track & Field. Competes in sprinting events, and the long jump and high jump.
• Softball (Fastpitch). Jaimie’s truest passion is in the dirt of the softball field. She is positioned at Shortstop. She wears number 7 as it was her mother’s number in college.

Clubs and Committees

• Coalition of Student Athletes. Called the “CSA” for short. Jaimie worked alongside the school’s Athletic Director during her Junior year to form this as a formal support and study group for student athletes; especially those struggling to balance their academics and personal lives with their respective sports. Support sessions are held on a bi-weekly basis and are overseen by the Athletic Director and/or a school counselor.
• Associated Student Body. Member. Amidst the busy school year, Jaimie has found the time to stay involved in the planning and preparation for school-sanctioned events, and all around work to make the scholastic environment one that her fellow students can truly feel comfortable and welcome in. She has been active with the Associated Student Body since her Sophomore year.
• School Newspaper. Sportswriter. Though not the lead reporter, Jaimie puts her love of sports to use by writing recaps of games and meets that she is a spectator to. As a Sophomore and Junior she also contributed a column called “All in the Game,” in which she published write-ups about the experience of fellow athletes and their perspectives and feelings as they participated in their respective sports.

Off-Campus Activities

• Travel Softball. During her summer months, Jaimie has typically spent much of her time honing her skill in her primary sport. The team draws players from multiple schools in the area and competes along the west coast.
• Outdoor Time. When not rushing off to another game or practice, Jaimie enjoys other outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. A day at the beach is also a way in which she unwinds.
• Legion of Lift. An informal ‘club’ comprised mostly of school students that meets over school breaks and summer vacation. They convene at a local gym or fitness club and work out together, usually in “pods” of three or four. Their purpose is to motivate and push one another, believing that fitness is best achieved through teamwork.
• Social Life. Between her other commitments Jaimie tries to maintain a healthy social life, spending leisure time with friends. While she's not the biggest party animal, she's got the spirit to liven up a gathering; she's often one of the first people to set foot on a dance floor.

Among the first qualities noted by most who have met her, is that Jaimie is demonstrably active, engaged, and outgoing. Though not an absolute socialite, she carries well in conversation, and rarely falls into shells of silence; if she does, it’s probably because she’s intently focused on something. She doesn't hesitate to participate in social activity or contribute in classroom discussions and does so with confidence and self-assuredness. She’s a spirited soul, which at times can translate into being a morale booster in some instances as she’s like to hype up moments big and small and celebrate successes with fervor; this may not be everyone’s vibe though, and to some she may come off as abrasively loud, overzealous, and perhaps even a bit arrogant.

Instilled with a rigorous work ethic from a young age, Jaimie has a focused and determined mindset, holding true to the ideal that practice makes perfect. She’s not one to cut corners, and lives by the mantra of “trust the process,” and doing things all the way. The grind mentality manifests a fierce competitiveness; this much tends less towards seeking to best others, and is moreso an intense pursuit of bettering herself in her chosen walks of life. However this comes with a degree of selfishness when in competitive settings. So much as Jaimie might be a team player in the sports she plays, she often asserts herself beyond need. chasing down hits on the softball field that might have been more easily fielded by her teammates, or stealing bases when the risk would outweigh the reward have been simultaneously the highlights of her athletic career and her coach’s top critique of her play style.

This trait doesn’t impact her capacity to be a good sport. She acknowledges when others outperform her; she’s among the last people to make claims of being robbed or cheated out of a success or a victory, taking most failure’s as lessons to build off of. She relishes the opportunity to meet, work with, or compete against someone she views as better than her, and does what she can to build up those that might not be quite as far along.

Without a doubt, Jaimie lives up to her surname. She’s known to be quite resilient both physically and mentally. Perhaps because of her formative years spent in competitive pressure, she handles adversity and life’s challenges somewhat more readily than others her age might. Having lived a youth diving onto low-cut grass and often hard-packed dirt, she’s not typically one to let pain and soreness stop her. To an extent, her demeanor is indicative of something of a tomboy, unconcerned about getting herself dirty and/or bruised. Even so, she retains some sense of compassion to recognize when others might be having a rough time one way or another, and isn’t shy about offering help if it is sought out; she will likewise respect the wishes of those that prefer to deal with their hardships alone, though this can come to the detriment of her not reporting many concerning issues.

Jaimie is abnormally self-critical in a manner that she is persistent in self-critique and evaluation. She’s the sort of person that will check her homework for errors as soon as she thinks she’s finished just to make sure she was correct and thorough. It’s not uncommon to find her in the office of one of her coaches looking for video footage of recent games to see where she might have been able to do better. If she’s looking in the mirror in the school weight room, she is checking her technique.

Recent Development - Mild Depression

Jaimie comes into the new school year having missed out on much of her normal summer activities. This is due to a foot and ankle injury she suffered at the end of the previous softball season. The injury necessitated surgery in order to properly heal and allow her to return to full form. Having to sit out of her usual pastimes has allowed an uncharacteristic, but relatively mild, depression to set in as she’s been on rest and recovery. Her focus has declined slightly, and while she retains her outgoing demeanor, she’s been somewhat less energetic.

Biography

It was no accident that Jaimie Steele became a standout on the softball field. She was born to and raised by two parents who also found success in the diamond. Her mother, Katherine (“Kat”) Steele (nee Parker) played collegiate softball at University of California, Los Angeles, wherein she was honored with multiple Player of the Week accolades for her play at first base, and success at bat. Her father, Bryson Steele, was recruited to play baseball professionally at age nineteen; he spent some time in the Minor Leagues before playing five seasons in the MLB, and retired soon after Jaimie was born so that he could be present in her life.

Jaimie’s parents were always the first to push her towards excellence. Both her father and mother acted as her coaches at various points in her youth. Her father coached her through Little League, during a spell of two years in which she played co-ed on an age 7-9 baseball team; she came more under her mother’s wing as she shifted into fastpitch softball, with Mrs. Steele even serving as the coach of her junior high school team. Both of her parents continue their involvement in the sports, with her father having become a recruitment scout (eventually promoted to be in charge of recruitment) for a nearby professional team, and her mother continuing to coach her former junior high school. As often as they could, her parents would take her to professional and collegiate games, further fostering her passion, and motivating her progress.

While softball was her primary sport, Jaimie also found a love for both soccer and track and field; these, however, are sports she approaches more as conditioning for softball, with soccer being valuable in keeping her reflexes sharp, and indoor track and field being ideal for maintaining her general fitness during the “off months” between fallball and the season proper,

Entering high school at Oceanus High, Jaimie earned a spot in the starting lineup as a Freshman; she began her high school Softball careers playing in the outfield, showing versatility in being able to play left, right, and center. But her head and heart were determined to reach shortstop; it was always her favorite position to play, and to watch others play. Developing under the upper class students, she found new mentorship in the juniors and seniors. By the time she was a Sophomore, she had proven her work ethic and was occasionally being placed at shortstop when the coaches brough in the Freshmen to fill the outfield for game time. Entering her junior year she was finally blessed with the opportunity to start at her dream position.

Her junior year was one of increased activity in extracurriculars. During that year’s soccer season, Jaimie grew cognizant of the mental and emotional struggles that often weighed on student athletes; she was no exception to this. In response to her observations, she gathered a group of fellow athletes and held a meeting with the school’s Athletic Director. After a lengthy meeting, the Coalition of Student Athletes, or CSA, was formed as a mutual support initiative to ease the stresses on students involved in sports.

That softball season was one that proved the most dramatic, yet growth-inducing of her career thus far. Whether it was in the dirt fielding hits, laying down bunts and slaps at the plate, or motivating her teammates from the bench, she grew into a quick leader on the team. In part through her effort and spirit, the Wave Runners Softball team reached the State Championship Finals. All that stood between them and a title berth was the top seeded team in the state. They swapped a win apiece with their rival, Parish Hill Academy, tying a best-of-three series at 1 & 1 to force a rubber match for series win.

Seven fiercely played innings on both sides of the ball lead Jaimie and her team to a place most athletes can only imagine: a tied game in the bottom of the 7th. Oceanus was in the field, recording two outs with relative ease; they were certain they’d get into the extra innings and plate another run to help win the game. That was when misfortune struck. And it struck hard. In a determined effort to catch a hard line drive, Jaimie fell to the ground and struggled to get back up. She had to be carried off the field by her coaches and brought by ambulance to the nearest hospital. She learned later that evening that her team had lost the game in the bottom of the 8th inning.

The news of the loss was crushing. Worse still, while her injury was anticipated to recover, she was required to undergo surgery in order to fully regain her strength and function. The summer that followed was quiet, with Jaimie spending much of her time on bed rest as she recovered from the surgery; she was forced to quit her summer travel team for the season, and pulled the plug on most of her other summer excursions. As the summer months waned she learned she wouldn’t be able to play soccer for her senior year. As the first day of her last year of high school quickly approached, she began to worry: would she be ready to play ball when the season started?

Future Plans

Coming as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Jaimie hopes to continue her career on the ball field in college. Her top choice at the moment is UCLA, where she would follow in her mother’s footsteps. However, Texas and Oklahoma are enticing for their recent successes in the sport; all three schools have shown interest in her. She intends to study exercise science and become an athletic trainer in the future.

Relationships

• Shiloh Blake. Teammate, pitcher, and captain on the Softball team. Jaimie genuinely has Shiloh’s back on and off the field.
• Atanasia Rumancek. Former soccer teammate. Ata and Jaimie began butting heads almost as soon as the former set foot on the soccer field for practice. Their shared firey work ethic proved inefficient in keeping Ata from being instantly frustrated with Jaimie's louder tendencies. Their relationshhip came to a head in Junior year when Ata's last nerve with her then goalkeeper was snapped. A headbutt from Ata, and a follow-up of fists, the two entangled into a fight that had to be broken up by the referees and their coaches. Both were ejected from that game. Jaimie road the bench for the home stretch of the team's season.
• Nari Kwon. Best(?) Friend. Jaimie and Nari first met in the school weightroom. Jaimie was a Sophomore at the time, and Nari, an exuberant Freshmen looking take up lifting. After an initial bout of trying to best each other lifting at the squat racks, the pair became quick friends. Despite being involved in different sports, they maintained a steady routine of working out together when not doing so with their respective teams. The two, being able to match each other's energy and enthusiasm, are evidence of iron sharpening iron, pushing each other to be better.

Other/Miscellaneous

• Family has two cats and a dog. The cats, both black, are named Fortuna and Midnight. The dog, a German Shepard, is named Yogi; Yogi occasionally makes appearances at practices and games.
• Her walk-on song in softball is “Superstar” by Lupe Fiasco.
• She remains, thus far, abstinent from any substance use.
• Her vehicle of choice is a forest green 2006 Jeep Wrangler (two-door); it’s had some minor work done to integrate Bluetooth connectivity with the sound system, but is otherwise true to its original specs.

“Does my hair look weird?”

Has blue eyes and dirty blonde hair; he’s been letting the hair grow out since April of junior year. He’s lean and a bit lanky, but has enough definition of muscle to not look like a skeleton. While he has some length to arms and legs, it’s not too noticeable; at least he doesn’t look like a Slenderman.

On the frontside of his left shoulder he has a tattoo of a silhouetted skateboarder with a trail of music notes kicking up from the back wheels.

He routinely dons a revolving selection of wristbands, either elastic, woven, or rope-and-bead. He is similarly fond of hand-crafted bead necklaces

However there’s one necklace that he almost always wears: His “Band Beads.” This is a leather thread upon which is a convex pendant of the school’s ‘wave’ crest. As per tradition in the marching band, these are given to new members (and instructors) upon their completion of their first band camp. The crest was originally flanked by a single pair of white beads indicating Ethan's rookie status as a Freshman. With each successive band season, following the final performance, he’s received additional beads that are a swirl of sea blue, sea green, and black; these are threaded to the outside of the white beads and indicate the number of seasons he's marched; he currently has three, and will get another pair should he complete this upcoming season, as well as a pair of gold beads showing his status as a graduating senior. It's the only form of jewelry other than piercings band members are permitted to wear while in uniform, and Ethan only removes it to surf, swim, and shower.

How school has been going

“So… when do I actually USE the quadratic formula?”

Ethan has historically been a B+ student in lecture-based courses. He seems to grasp concepts in class, but struggles with test-taking. He mostly excels in classes that take a more hands-on approach to learning; shop class, stagecraft, band, etc. He performs best outside of these areas when his teachers can implement practical scenarios in which to implement the knowledge.

Marching Band and Stagecraft are his favorite courses.

What I get up to…

“Yeah. I stay pretty active.”

• “I hit things with other things.” 🥁 Marching Band. Performs halftime shows for home football games, parades, and at several competitions in the area. Ethan is in the drumline, in which he plays multi-tenors.
  
  • Rhythm Wave. 🥁 The nickname given to the OHSMB drumline. The line occasionally convenes out of football season to hype up the crowd at other school events, and sports other than football. Their impromptu performances aren’t always sanctioned by the school administration.
• “I’m going through a tunnel.” Surf Team. 🏄 He’s not the best on the team, but he holds his own and no one has ever argued that he’s uncommitted or doesn’t enjoy it. Attends practices and competitions.

“Yes. I'm old enough to be in the club.”

• “Going dark on stage.” Theatre Club 🎭 Ethan stays involved with the Theatre Club. His passions therein largely fall in the realms of set building and lighting. He’s helped design and program the lights for a few school productions.

“I may or may not get enough sleep.”

• “You wanted the Dremel, right?” Ethan works part-time for his father’s business, mostly helping with pre-fabricated pieces for construction and remodeling jobs, and prepping the shop on Sunday afternoons for the work week. It’s a pretty relaxed pace though, and his dad is generally alright with letting Ethan live his life outside of the work during the school year; more is expected over summer breaks, however.
• “I'm from Cali; of course I skate and surf.” Somewhere along the line Ethan took up skateboarding as a hobby and a “more engaging way to stay active.” His “home base” as a skater is primarily in longboarding, the more grounded version of skateboarding. Nonetheless he’s gotten good at carving and dancing, and is currently practicing how to ollie on a 42” board. When he does mount a smaller board, it’s usually a cruiser. Skating also led him to surfing.
• “All-in-all I’m just… climbing up a wall.” A penchant for making his way up ladders and traversing the theater’s catwalks managed to lead him to rock climbing (somehow). He mostly does it indoors at climbing gyms, but will sometimes, usually while on summer break, hit up an outdoor spot at least once a year.

And where I’m going.

“I've made it this far without a plan.”

Truth be told, Ethan isn’t entirely sure what he’d like to do once his days at Oceanus High are concluded. The thought of going to college doesn’t appeal to him; he already dislikes the classroom setting as it is. He’s considered going into a trade to follow in his father’s footsteps; he could take over the business once he’s both old enough and experienced enough to handle the workload. However he’s also of the mind that he may want to continue with theatre or music in some capacity; becoming a professional lighting designer, or getting a legitimate band together would be a dream-come-true.

At this point in time, Eeth is leaning towards taking a gap year or two to regroup and gather his thoughts so he can move towards the future with more clarity. He’s not in any rush to get anywhere.

This is starting to get a little personal

“This has been a bit of a ride, hasn't it?”

Ethan's life thus far has been a mildly sporadic journey. He's branched out into a somewhat multifaceted individual, choosing to soak up as much breadth as he can.

He comes from a mostly blue collar upbringing. His father, Thomas Joseph Bahl, is a tradesman and contractor with experience in construction; his chief skills are in carpentry and masonry, but with a foundation of general construction knowledge.

When Ethan was still a child, Thomas rolled the dice and left his then travel-intensive job as a foreman in corporate construction firm to pursue the creation of his own company; a venture that would allow him to both stay close to home with his then two children and provide him the liberty to set his own hours. When Ethan was six years old, ‘Bahl Construction & Renovation’ was conceived and began getting off the ground. Initially, the company was just Thomas and his wife (and Ethan’s mother) Miranda working in tandem to make the dream work. Miranda handled the clerical end of the business, part-time at first, putting her experience in the office setting to use. The jobs Thomas took at the outset were as small as the company, handling minor repair work and light renovations, with prefabrications being done in the garage of their house.

As time went on, the Bahl family persevered. Ethan and his younger brother Nathan would ‘help’ their father in whatever ways their younger selves could, often for an allowance as repayment. Over time the business grew from a small-time neighborhood renovation contractor to a bonafide construction company. Eventually, the shop would outgrow the family garage, and would be moved into a small, empty warehouse that was fitted with all of the equipment necessary for the business. Even the office space was moved in. As Thomas found more work being requested of him in the Long Beach area, he began to employ others to assist him with his jobs, and eventually allow them to take on separate contracts to widen his net. By the time Ethan was twelve, the business had reached roughly 30 employees, and was rebranded as Long Beach All-Trade LLC.

By the time Ethan was in high school the business was thriving, taking on new construction projects, renovation work, and even steady contracts as a maintenance crew for other businesses. The family was able to move into a larger home that was also closer to the company shop.

Throughout this time of growth, Ethan and his brother would continue helping their father and mother as they were able. It was through his father that Ethan learned to work with hands, and came to find joy in such work.

It was also through his father that he had taken on a passion for music. As a child helping his dad in the garage of their old home, Ethan would be serenaded by his father’s playlist resounding through the small space. It was an eclectic mix of artists and genres, though the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin stuck out the most on the playlists. These would form the basis of Ethan’s musical taste, which only broadened from those days. He was most enamored with the drums, the driving rhythms of which always seemed to put an extra pep in Ethan’s step.

At age ten he received his first drum set, a Junior kit by Pacific Drums & Percussion (PDP), which his parents gifted him to keep him from drumming on the countertops and kitchenware. He would quickly outgrow the junior kit and put his allowance to a Mainstage series drum set, also by PDP. When he was in junior high school, 7th grade, he saw the Oceanus High School Marching Band at a parade he and family were attending (he forgets what parade it was). He was immediately drawn to the sound of the drum line warming up and playing its street beat prior to stepping off; the multi-tenor drums in particular drew his interest. He would make that very high school line in his freshman year and has stuck with it for the duration of his high school education.

In 8th grade, Ethan found himself atop a skateboard for the first time. He lost his footing on his first try and broke his wrist. Once healed, he tried again. Eventually he found his way to longboarding, which became his forte in skating. An after school cruise in his freshman year brought him carving along the walks of a local beach where the OHS surf team was practicing. Already having met a few members through his skating exploits, he was talked into going out for the team the following year. He would spend the summer between freshman and sophomore year learning to surf, and would land himself a spot on the team.

As a Freshman he would also fall in with the school's theatre club. Putting his days working under his dad's wing to use, he immersed himself into scenic construction, painting, and rigging; he's dabbled into lighting and audio as well.

Entering his senior year he's developed a reputation as something of a friendly drifter, brushing shoulders with most of the student body in one way or another.

“How am I supposed to act?”
Genuine | Reliable | Mildly Scatter-Brained | Helpful | Healthily Disorganized | Unassuming | Hidden Badass | Egalitarian Ideals | Forgiving | Wandering | Fidgety

”Do what you say you’ll do; be who you say you are.” Of all of the words that Ethan’s father has spoken to him, these are among the ones that stand out the most. Going beyond the ideal of being true to one’s own self, Eeth places emphasis on his ability to manage the expectations others might have of him, and to be as open and honest about his intentions as he can. He won’t go to great lengths to mask his thoughts or feelings, though he does have a filter through which he (attempts to) express his views in as much a constructive manner as possible. He’s someone that can be counted on to follow through on a promise or agreement; if he needs to back out, it’s usually with good reason, and he’ll probably over explain why or apologize multiple times both and after the fact. He’s someone that’s usually quick to lend a hand, and doesn’t expect much, if any, recognition or recompense for the things he does unless agreed to.

He holds true to a generous nature as well. He’ll give just about anyone their fair chance at just about anything, and is forgiving of human error, sometimes more so than he should be, or more than the person in question may deserve.

He's not afraid to be a bit of a clown; picks his moments carefully.

He tends to carry a multitude of thoughts most of the time, drifting from idea to idea in his mind. He frequently finds himself invested in one topic or subject intensely for bursts of time (a month or two) and will move on when he feels as though he’s gleaned enough of it to apply in practice. With this, though, are a handful of intense passions and interests that have stuck with him, as he’s found there’s always something new to learn therein; skating, surfing, music, and theatre are at the core of his persisting interests. He functions well amid the mildly chaotic, finding a degree of comfort in things like a tiny bit of clutter. Further, he feels that he needs to be up and moving as much as possible. He finds it difficult to stay still for too long; in middle school teachers often commented on his fidgeting.

For all intents and purposes though, Ethan is a pretty ‘chill’ guy. He’s slow to anger, and carries enough patience for at least two people. He’s generally a laid back, jovial person, with seemingly little aggression to put out into the world. But everyone has their fire; that something that brings out their inner wild. For Ethan, that something is drumming. The person he is away from a set of drums and the person he becomes once the sticks are in his hands are as different as night and day. Behind the kit, or while carrying his marching band drum, a floodgate of energy opens; he plays hard, and is boundlessly expressive in both his musicality and body language, shedding the more relaxed and ambling nature of his routine self.

• Soccer. Played on the team Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. Primarily positioned at goalie.
• Indoor Track & Field. Competes in sprinting events, and the long jump and high jump.
• Softball (Fastpitch). Jaimie’s truest passion is in the dirt of the softball field. She is positioned at Shortstop. She wears number 7 as it was her mother’s number in college.

Clubs and Committees

• Coalition of Student Athletes. Called the “CSA” for short. Jaimie worked alongside the school’s Athletic Director during her Junior year to form this as a formal support and study group for student athletes; especially those struggling to balance their academics and personal lives with their respective sports. Support sessions are held on a bi-weekly basis and are overseen by the Athletic Director and/or a school counselor.
• Associated Student Body. Member. Amidst the busy school year, Jaimie has found the time to stay involved in the planning and preparation for school-sanctioned events, and all around work to make the scholastic environment one that her fellow students can truly feel comfortable and welcome in. She has been active with the Associated Student Body since her Sophomore year.
• School Newspaper. Sportswriter. Though not the lead reporter, Jaimie puts her love of sports to use by writing recaps of games and meets that she is a spectator to. As a Sophomore and Junior she also contributed a column called “All in the Game,” in which she published write-ups about the experience of fellow athletes and their perspectives and feelings as they participated in their respective sports.

Off-Campus Activities

• Travel Softball. During her summer months, Jaimie has typically spent much of her time honing her skill in her primary sport. The team draws players from multiple schools in the area and competes along the west coast.
• Outdoor Time. When not rushing off to another game or practice, Jaimie enjoys other outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. A day at the beach is also a way in which she unwinds.
• Legion of Lift. An informal ‘club’ comprised mostly of school students that meets over school breaks and summer vacation. They convene at a local gym or fitness club and work out together, usually in “pods” of three or four. Their purpose is to motivate and push one another, believing that fitness is best achieved through teamwork.
• Social Life. Between her other commitments Jaimie tries to maintain a healthy social life, spending leisure time with friends. While she's not the biggest party animal, she's got the spirit to liven up a gathering; she's often one of the first people to set foot on a dance floor.

Among the first qualities noted by most who have met her, is that Jaimie is demonstrably active, engaged, and outgoing. Though not an absolute socialite, she carries well in conversation, and rarely falls into shells of silence; if she does, it’s probably because she’s intently focused on something. She doesn't hesitate to participate in social activity or contribute in classroom discussions and does so with confidence and self-assuredness. She’s a spirited soul, which at times can translate into being a morale booster in some instances as she’s like to hype up moments big and small and celebrate successes with fervor; this may not be everyone’s vibe though, and to some she may come off as abrasively loud, overzealous, and perhaps even a bit arrogant.

Instilled with a rigorous work ethic from a young age, Jaimie has a focused and determined mindset, holding true to the ideal that practice makes perfect. She’s not one to cut corners, and lives by the mantra of “trust the process,” and doing things all the way. The grind mentality manifests a fierce competitiveness; this much tends less towards seeking to best others, and is moreso an intense pursuit of bettering herself in her chosen walks of life. However this comes with a degree of selfishness when in competitive settings. So much as Jaimie might be a team player in the sports she plays, she often asserts herself beyond need. chasing down hits on the softball field that might have been more easily fielded by her teammates, or stealing bases when the risk would outweigh the reward have been simultaneously the highlights of her athletic career and her coach’s top critique of her play style.

This trait doesn’t impact her capacity to be a good sport. She acknowledges when others outperform her; she’s among the last people to make claims of being robbed or cheated out of a success or a victory, taking most failure’s as lessons to build off of. She relishes the opportunity to meet, work with, or compete against someone she views as better than her, and does what she can to build up those that might not be quite as far along.

Without a doubt, Jaimie lives up to her surname. She’s known to be quite resilient both physically and mentally. Perhaps because of her formative years spent in competitive pressure, she handles adversity and life’s challenges somewhat more readily than others her age might. Having lived a youth diving onto low-cut grass and often hard-packed dirt, she’s not typically one to let pain and soreness stop her. To an extent, her demeanor is indicative of something of a tomboy, unconcerned about getting herself dirty and/or bruised. Even so, she retains some sense of compassion to recognize when others might be having a rough time one way or another, and isn’t shy about offering help if it is sought out; she will likewise respect the wishes of those that prefer to deal with their hardships alone, though this can come to the detriment of her not reporting many concerning issues.

Jaimie is abnormally self-critical in a manner that she is persistent in self-critique and evaluation. She’s the sort of person that will check her homework for errors as soon as she thinks she’s finished just to make sure she was correct and thorough. It’s not uncommon to find her in the office of one of her coaches looking for video footage of recent games to see where she might have been able to do better. If she’s looking in the mirror in the school weight room, she is checking her technique.

Recent Development - Mild Depression

Jaimie comes into the new school year having missed out on much of her normal summer activities. This is due to a foot and ankle injury she suffered at the end of the previous softball season. The injury necessitated surgery in order to properly heal and allow her to return to full form. Having to sit out of her usual pastimes has allowed an uncharacteristic, but relatively mild, depression to set in as she’s been on rest and recovery. Her focus has declined slightly, and while she retains her outgoing demeanor, she’s been somewhat less energetic.

Biography

It was no accident that Jaimie Steele became a standout on the softball field. She was born to and raised by two parents who also found success in the diamond. Her mother, Katherine (“Kat”) Steele (nee Parker) played collegiate softball at University of California, Los Angeles, wherein she was honored with multiple Player of the Week accolades for her play at first base, and success at bat. Her father, Bryson Steele, was recruited to play baseball professionally at age nineteen; he spent some time in the Minor Leagues before playing five seasons in the MLB, and retired soon after Jaimie was born so that he could be present in her life.

Jaimie’s parents were always the first to push her towards excellence. Both her father and mother acted as her coaches at various points in her youth. Her father coached her through Little League, during a spell of two years in which she played co-ed on an age 7-9 baseball team; she came more under her mother’s wing as she shifted into fastpitch softball, with Mrs. Steele even serving as the coach of her junior high school team. Both of her parents continue their involvement in the sports, with her father having become a recruitment scout (eventually promoted to be in charge of recruitment) for a nearby professional team, and her mother continuing to coach her former junior high school. As often as they could, her parents would take her to professional and collegiate games, further fostering her passion, and motivating her progress.

While softball was her primary sport, Jaimie also found a love for both soccer and track and field; these, however, are sports she approaches more as conditioning for softball, with soccer being valuable in keeping her reflexes sharp, and indoor track and field being ideal for maintaining her general fitness during the “off months” between fallball and the season proper,

Entering high school at Oceanus High, Jaimie earned a spot in the starting lineup as a Freshman; she began her high school Softball careers playing in the outfield, showing versatility in being able to play left, right, and center. But her head and heart were determined to reach shortstop; it was always her favorite position to play, and to watch others play. Developing under the upper class students, she found new mentorship in the juniors and seniors. By the time she was a Sophomore, she had proven her work ethic and was occasionally being placed at shortstop when the coaches brough in the Freshmen to fill the outfield for game time. Entering her junior year she was finally blessed with the opportunity to start at her dream position.

Her junior year was one of increased activity in extracurriculars. During that year’s soccer season, Jaimie grew cognizant of the mental and emotional struggles that often weighed on student athletes; she was no exception to this. In response to her observations, she gathered a group of fellow athletes and held a meeting with the school’s Athletic Director. After a lengthy meeting, the Coalition of Student Athletes, or CSA, was formed as a mutual support initiative to ease the stresses on students involved in sports.

That softball season was one that proved the most dramatic, yet growth-inducing of her career thus far. Whether it was in the dirt fielding hits, laying down bunts and slaps at the plate, or motivating her teammates from the bench, she grew into a quick leader on the team. In part through her effort and spirit, the Wave Runners Softball team reached the State Championship Finals. All that stood between them and a title berth was the top seeded team in the state. They swapped a win apiece with their rival, Parish Hill Academy, tying a best-of-three series at 1 & 1 to force a rubber match for series win.

Seven fiercely played innings on both sides of the ball lead Jaimie and her team to a place most athletes can only imagine: a tied game in the bottom of the 7th. Oceanus was in the field, recording two outs with relative ease; they were certain they’d get into the extra innings and plate another run to help win the game. That was when misfortune struck. And it struck hard. In a determined effort to catch a hard line drive, Jaimie fell to the ground and struggled to get back up. She had to be carried off the field by her coaches and brought by ambulance to the nearest hospital. She learned later that evening that her team had lost the game in the bottom of the 8th inning.

The news of the loss was crushing. Worse still, while her injury was anticipated to recover, she was required to undergo surgery in order to fully regain her strength and function. The summer that followed was quiet, with Jaimie spending much of her time on bed rest as she recovered from the surgery; she was forced to quit her summer travel team for the season, and pulled the plug on most of her other summer excursions. As the summer months waned she learned she wouldn’t be able to play soccer for her senior year. As the first day of her last year of high school quickly approached, she began to worry: would she be ready to play ball when the season started?

Future Plans

Coming as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Jaimie hopes to continue her career on the ball field in college. Her top choice at the moment is UCLA, where she would follow in her mother’s footsteps. However, Texas and Oklahoma are enticing for their recent successes in the sport; all three schools have shown interest in her. She intends to study exercise science and become an athletic trainer in the future.

Relationships

• Shiloh Blake. Teammate, pitcher, and captain on the Softball team. Jaimie genuinely has Shiloh’s back on and off the field.

Other/Miscellaneous

Anna paid little mind to Cythena’s comment on her animated entrance. She wrapped herself up in eyeing the new staff; she was particularly drawn to the Lich, who had just finished securing her innards. She wondered how such a person was to fare as a chef; surely she'd have to keep herself together to avoid spoiling meals. The others were all seemingly fit for their roles, though the spirit noted the young boy who seemed more interested in his notebook than his new coworkers. The catfolk seemed to eye her suspiciously, though Anna brushed that aside for the moment.

The chiming of a bell outside the staff room caught her attention. Cythena requested that Anna greet the guests. The ghost woman gave the boss a curtsy, and drifted casually to the wall leading out to the lobby.

"Um, excuse me? Anna, wasn't it?”

Anna, slowing but not stopping, turned full-body. Still floating off backwards she laid eyes on the Lich. A wide, bright smile overtook her face.

”I apologize if this is a sensitive subject for you, but... how did you die?”

A wide, bright smile overtook the ghost's face. ”Ooh.” She spoke in a reminiscing fashion, half singing as she started. ”It was quite the tragic end. The hands of an inebriated, jealous passion and lust caught me from behind. Here, she pointed a finger up to the ceiling, ”in this very lodging. The fall from my seventh floor balcony was quite the way to go.” The sound of the service bell ringing again pulled her back toward the front desk. ”The details will have to wait, I'm afraid.”

She evaporated back into a mist-form as she passed through the door and out to the front desk on the other side. Becoming visible again as she crossed into the lobby, making a few less-suspecting guests flinch, she approached the first in line. Flicking and flourishing her hand, she slid a thick, heavy ledger book towards her and flipped through pages until she found the current set of bookings. She bowed her head, smiled, and spoke. ”Welcome to The Nova Hotel. Do you have a reservation?”

Jimmy is an outsider to the city of Alengras, and hails from a peculiar region. Where he is from, humanity has been disconnected from the realms of magic and the supernatural. Whether due to age-old and long since dead feuds between humanity and their fantastical counterparts, or the humans not being ready to process such things existing, or the simple fact that no magical entities have resided nearby in generations, such areas see normal humans going about their lives none the wiser of the wondrous elements just beyond their boundaries. Centuries of industrial progress has clouded the minds of generations, rendering them incapable of even perceiving many of the beings that boast mystical and magical properties; those that these humans might still see tend to keep their true nature underwraps.

Having come from such a place, Jimmy’s exposure to the extraordinary and paranormal has been confined entirely to the works of fiction that his society has produced from the legends and myths that were, in days immemorial, as real as the air they breathed. He has found his way unwittingly into Alengras following an odd yet promising lead on a job. Having sought to go out on his own and live away from his parents home, the employment opportunity stands to provide him with an amicable place to start off his adult life.

By all accounts, James, or Jimmy as most know him, is the quintessential “good kid.”

Helpful as a matter of routine and habit, he is frequently among the first to volunteer himself for tasks. He boasts an exceptional work ethic, putting his best into whatever job, endeavor, or errand he sets himself upon; he is notably a self-starter, who will, more often than not, take it upon himself to do what he knows needs to be done without being asked. He’s broadly a bright, and cheerful young man who strives to radiate courtesy and good will in everything that he does in life. This is not without its limits and drawbacks, however. He can easily find himself taking on more than he can chew, and leans too much into making himself an unrepentant people-pleaser, sometimes to the point of wearing himself thin.

A small town upbringing has left him on the backfoot when it comes to his interactions with the wider world. He’s naive to more than he realizes, and can be skittish when faced with the unexpected. He doesn’t always react positively to things that are outside of what he knows to be “ordinary,” being taken back by new odditie; he might come across to some as intolerant, and to others as scared or a coward of sorts. He has a slight gullible side, falling for certain pranks and misdirections, though this is typically retained within the realms of suspension of disbelief (if he’s in the woods and someone exclaims “bear!” he is likely to turn about to find where said bear is). While not incompetent in social situations, he can become awkward when taken well enough out of his comfort zone.

None. Jimmy is for all intents and purposes, a normal human. He possesses no discernable magic traits or abilities. If he’s lucky, someone at the hotel will have a way for him to put himself on an even keel. His only seeming trait is that he has regained the capacity to perceive and process the arcane that his ancestors once lost.
