I N T R O D U C T I O N:

Welcome fans of Marvel, DC and all comics alike. Absolute Comics is a sandbox based RP that seeks to merge and mix the lore of your favourite DC and Marvel characters into one living cohesive world. The idea behind this RP is not to embody our favourite heroes to simply retell iconic stories and origins but to take these characters and make them our own. In fact, the goal of the RP is for players to take their favourite characters and re-imagine them to tell their own stories. We only ask that the 'heart' of the character remains the same. Players will take the roles of their favourite characters and tell stories either alone or in collaboration with other players in order to develop and grow the world.

P R E M I S E:

The world of Absolute Comics is a singular universe comprised of both the DC Comics and Marvel Comics universes. How heavily mixed these elements are is dependent upon the players as the world and its lore is shaped by you and your stories. Do Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark know each other? Has Lady Shiva trained with Danny Rand? Have Thor and Superman gone toe to toe? These are questions for you to ask yourself and it can only be answered as the RP unfolds, sharing not only your vision but that of the other players.

In-game history is decided on a first come, first serve basis. However, it should not be designed in a manner which locks out another player from taking on a favourite role. To give an example, if a player applies as Dick Grayson before an application has been received for Bruce Wayne, then the player applying as Grayson can decide to portray Dick as Robin, Nightwing or even Batman. No matter which of these roles the Grayson player chooses, it has an effect on a future Bruce Wayne player.

Due to the inclusive nature of the roleplay, a Bruce Wayne player would have to craft their CS to reflect a Bruce who allows for opportunities for a Grayson player or other notable members of the Bat-family. For instance, if the Grayson player chooses to be Nightwing, then the Bruce Wayne player will need to portray an older Batman. Even if a ‘Dick-Bats’ could block a player from playing Bruce Wayne as Batman, it shouldn’t necessarily block Bruce Wayne as a character. If so desired by both parties, a Batman Inc. like scenario could even be worked out.

A major change to Absolute from the previous iteration is that the IC will be divided into three types of play. Like most 'One Universe' roleplays, players will be encouraged to write and create their own 'Chapters', solo stories that follow their character in whichever point in their career they so choose. 'Crossovers' will be player-coordinated events which run alongside 'Chapters'.

Crossovers are available to any player to create and coordinate, and there will never be a lockout on Crossovers allowing as many players as desired to participate. These events will range from a city-wide to national level pending the ongoing events and players involved. Intended for players who thrive on group interaction, Crossovers will act as a more traditional roleplay, thus sating the needs of those who need a break from solo 'Chapter' writing.

Lastly, there will be 'Crises', these Crises will be GM organized and potentially universe wide and will change the status quo of the entire game as needed or desired. This can be used to re-align players by challenging their personal beliefs, open gateways to the multiverse, repel alien invasions or even a total rebirth of the roster to allow new players to take up roles which have been abandoned with a completely clean slate.

It is important to remember that interaction, much like any role-play, is the bread and butter of the game. To that end, players are encouraged to work together not only to create Crossovers but also during Crises to better determine a mutually desired outcome for all those involved. Classic teams ups such as Batman and Robin or Wolverine and Hawkeye are always welcome but don't forget, this is a One Universe Rp where the Devil of Hell's Kitchen can work alongside Gotham's Dark Knight.

S O U R C E M A T E R I A L:

As previously mentioned this roleplay allows players to draw upon characters from not only the Marvel and DC Universes but other characters may be considered on a case by case basis if they fit the tone and feel of the game, however, priority will be given to characters who originate from Marvel and DC comics. Your character concept can be based on any iteration of the character, and can start from any point in their career as there won't be one date isolated as 'Zero Year'.

What this means for you as a player is that the world's Spider-Man could currently be Miles Morales, Iron Man could be replaced by Iron Heart, Batman could be Terry McGinnis. This also means that some heroes might just be starting out, perhaps the Teen Titans were just formed? Maybe Scott Summers just found out he was a mutant? The changes and possibilities are near endless but are sure to create a unique world for us to tell our own takes on these 'modern myths'.

G A M E P L A Y:

CHAPTERS:
Chapters are the stories told by the players themselves for whichever characters they have chosen to portray. This is the bread and butter of the RP, driving it forward and filling out the world as each player tells their stories and builds the setting that directly impacts their character. A chapter could be as short as a single post, to a story spanning over thirty posts. Think of a chapter as an episode of a television show or a single comic issue.

It is essentially that all players contribute their own 'Chapters' to the IC and drive their characters independently. Equally it is important to read other player's 'Chapters' and making note of significant events or even just 'broadcasted' ones to reference and relate to within your own posts. Small efforts like this go a long way in making the world feel alive and connected.

CROSSOVERS:
Crossovers are the icing on the cake, keeping players invested through interaction and back to back posting with each other. A crossover is defined here as a player coordinated and driven interaction between two or more characters in the IC. A Crossover may be as simple as a one time team up or a small part of a larger over-arching story depending on the ambitions of the player(s) coordinating the story and those involved. There is no limit as to how many crossovers can take place at any one time as they will be completely moderated by those involved and not the GM Team.

Crossovers may take place in a single city or even multiple, spanning up to a national event depending on the number of players involved in the current crossover. Players are not required to participate in a crossover if they do not want to, and if you have approached a player and they have turned you, we ask that you please respect their wishes. That said, all players should consider participating in a crossover from time to time if only to recharge and avoid burnout due to lack of interaction. You will never be required to remain within the crossover for its entire run unless you become integral to its story, which case it is only respectful to do so.

Ultimately, the structure of each crossover will be dependent upon the player(s) organizing it. It should be noted that a crossover should never change the status quo of the game, and while consequences and fallout is encouraged, it should be limited to only those involved unless special permissions have been granted.

CRISES:
Crises are large scale events which affect the roleplay on a massive scale. These events can be global, universal or even multi-dimensional. Ideally, the occurring Crisis will affect all players, but all players need not directly contribute to the Crisis at hand. The outcome of these events will affect the roleplay's status quo, wiping the slate clean or drastically changing the present world. This could mean something like DC's Rebirth where abandoned characters can be reset allowing new players to assume their roles without the need to continue previous stories, or Marvel's Civil War where characters and their beliefs will be challenged, changing the alignment of different characters and the shape of different team rosters. These events won't take place often but when they do, they will be designed to directly impact the RP.

C H A R A C T E R S U B M I S S I O N S:

Due to the nature of the RP, character submissions will not be based on traditional sheets but on 'Character Proposals'. This differs in that instead of the usual fact spill that a character sheet is based on, a Character Proposal outlines the character you're intending to play, any differences from their source material and a proposed character arc. This is so we know coming in that you have a story you want to tell with this character. Unlike other RPs where you create a character and then enter the IC for collaborative writing, Absolute Comics is based around self-directed arcs. That's not to say you can't write with other players, by all means, make plans with other players but it's unlikely you'll be able to do this for your first arc.

Character Proposal sheets do not necessarily have to be limited to one character per se, meaning you could make a sheet for Batman and Robin or the X-Men if you wanted to. As this is a One Universe RP don't hesitate to mix the teams up a little or try out some new team-ups. It should be noted however that all applications are limited to heroic characters only and that villainous character sheets won't be accepted.

Players will only be allowed one character concept to start with, potentially able to earn or request a second primary point of view at a later time, pending the IC's activity coupled with their own. However, due to the singular universe of the RP, it is asked that players choose the opposite franchise when creating a second character. This means that if you started the game with Captain America, then your second character will be required to be a character from the DC Universe, not another Marvel Character.

Players interested in the same character will be judged based on the strength of their proposed concept and sample with the GMs choosing the preferred candidate. In the event that someone applies as a character you were interested in, you will have a window of twenty-four hours to submit a competing application. If a character submission goes unchallenged for twenty-four hours and the GMs have no outstanding issues with it, the character will be accepted.

So in closing, the purpose of this thread is obviously to both garner interest and feedback in order to see if an idea like this could fly. Please leave all comments, criticisms and concerns below and myself and the other GMs will try to answer any questions as they come along. As such, some ideas and concepts as presented above may be refined are altered before the official OOC is launched once enough interest is garnered. Please keep this in mind moving forward.

I thank you for your interest in Absolute Comics and look forward to seeing everyone's ideas and stories unfold.

Location: Great Room - Wolfe Estate
Post Title: Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)

Interaction(s): @GhostMami as Maya Soto
Previously: None

A dreary drizzle fell from the skies over the Richmond International Airport as Andrew Wright attempted to shield his long, tousled hair from the cold water droplets. A knot had formed in his stomach almost a week ago, exactly the same time he had looked at the calendar on his phone and realized how rapidly this day was approaching. That knot had only tightened as he bid his wife goodbye, kissing Beth seconds after lying to her face.

He had told her that he was on his way to jury duty, a high profile case that would require him and the other jurors to be isolated from the world and that the case would take upwards of a month. Of course this was all just the elaborate lie he had concocted in order to protect his marriage. Beth could never find out the truth about his trip, let alone the contents of the briefcase.

Going through the motions at the airport, Andrew had almost regressed into a zombie-like state until he was brought back to reality as the woman checking his ticket cheerily informed him that his seat had been upgraded to first class. He find himself unsurprised before admitting to himself he had simply assumed the ticket was already first class given that the resort had yet to save on any other expense. Settling into his seat, Andrew allowed himself to enjoy the comfort, waving down the first stewardess to pass as he ordered himself an old fashioned.

Spending his time on the plane wisely, Andrew used the near seven hours to catch up on his personal devotions, spending the time on the airplane pouring through his bible as he jotted down several lesson ideas for his Youth Group upon his return at the end of the month. Looking up to see the ‘fasten seatbelt’ sign, the Youth Pastor blinked, remarking quietly to himself at how the time had flown by.

Exiting the plane went as smoothly as boarding, Andrew was quickly taken aback by how busy the small terminal actually was. While he wouldn’t consider himself well travelled by any stretch, he had never realized that Montana’s National Park had such a large draw. The crowds inside the terminal were a surprise to say the least as Andrew smiled at several families who walked by him before turning his face towards the large windows. The warmth of the sun radiated over his body as he welcomed the change in weather from the dreary Virginia rain he had unregrettable left behind.

Retrieving his luggage, Andrew wandered towards the exit tapping the pockets of his chocolate-coloured suede jacket to find the directions he had printed off. Stopping as he struggled to find the folded piece of paper, Andrew paused as he noticed a strangely dressed man out of the corner of his eye. The man looked like something out of an old movie, dressed in a manner that could only be described butler. Though his attire was hardly the only reason the older man had caught Andrew’s eye, between his gloved hands was held a sign that read Andrew’s own name.

As Andrew approached, the man nodded towards him before motioning that he should follow. Silently nodding his agreement, Andrew did as suggested, following the man outside. Pausing as he held the door open for a family behind him, Andrew’s wandering eye caught a glimpse of a young blonde woman. For a brief second, his mouth twisted into a wolf like grin as a hunger appeared in his eye.

A grunt suddenly escaped his lips as Andrew collided with another man who began to profusely mutter apologies before just as quickly departing as Andrew tried to catch up with the ‘butler’. Suddenly realizing there was a piece of paper in his hand, Andrew opened it as his eyes widened at the words. The knot in his stomach that he had forgotten about suddenly becoming the only thing he could think about as his anxiety began to spike.

Was it too late to turn back? Perhaps it would be better to simply face the music at home.

Shaking his head, Andrew looked forward again. He had come this far, there was no turning back now. The ‘butler’ quickly loaded Andrew’s belongings into a luxury sport vehicle as the Youth Pastor made himself comfortable in the back. The drive went by relatively quickly as Andrew looked down at the paper in his hand again, reading the words over and over as he desperately tried to make out something in the illegible portion of it.

Shaking his head as he reluctantly gave up and tucked the paper back into the pockets of his jeans, Andrew felt the vehicle come to a stop as he was transferred from the car onto an equally luxurious motorboat that ferried him over the water. It didn’t take long to reach the estate, the massive residence quickly coming into view as Andrew felt a small gasp escape his chest. It was spectacular, far beyond his wildest dreams in terms of a home he could ever own.

Stepping out of the boat, Andrew was greeted by an Asian woman, whom Andrew noted was quite tall for both her race and sex. Extending her hand, the woman introduced herself as Heather Vandertulip, a name that Andrew quickly recognized as having been signed at the bottom of the invitation. Returning the greeting, Andrew watched the woman retract her hand, pulling her phone out as she typed out a short text of some sort. Andrew could only it was to let someone else know of his arrival. Perhaps the ominous Mr. and Mr.s Wolfe?

Following behind the woman, Andrew knew she was talking, something about the history of the estate, but he found himself too wrapped up in his surroundings to pay her much attention. It wasn’t until he entered into the great room that Andrew realized that he hadn’t retained a single word that Heather had said. The woman smiled towards him, inviting him into the large room in front of them as she asked him to wait for apparently others to arrive. Gesturing towards the chairs and the refreshments on the table, Heather suggested that Andrew make himself at home.

Nodding as he accepted the invitation due to seeing no other options at the time. Entering the room, Andrew noted a woman had arrived ahead of him, walking towards her as he found himself beginning wonder if perhaps she was here under the same circumstances as himself. His mind began to race at the reasons why someone as obvious wealthy as the Wolfe Family would be blackmailing a group of people like him? Some false moral high ground? Some sort of sick game? Or perhaps this was some sort of entrapment, something set up by his wife and Beth actually knew his darkest secrets.
Reaching for a glass of water, Andrew nodded towards the other woman as he spoke.

“Did you need a refill there, ma’am?”
A P P L I C A T I O N:

I regret everything

@NuttsnBolts or @POOHEAD189, can we shut this thing down?
Turn that 6 upside down, and it's a nine now.

Geez, that's $45,000 cash now plus plane tickets of varying costs, lodging, food etc.

This place is loaded.

Then again it is blackmailing all of us.
Human beings are human beings. We're evolved to compete for survival. For as long as humans have interacted with other humans with any physical/cultural differences, they've tried to kill each other. The anonymity of the Internet lowers the power of those behaviors but also effectively negates the risks. Ergo the problem is inherent and systemic to humans. It has existed since the creation of intelligent life and it will last until the heat death of the universe.

I would put forth the idea of society as a counter argument. The greatest advances in mankind's history are the accomplishments of the many, not the one. While yes we are a competitive and combatant species, it's only by working together we ever have made progress or progression. Approaching a problem with the above attitude is accepting the issue and a reluctance to work towards fixing it, it's adding to the problem instead of being a solution.

People hold grudges, people let their opinions influence others (which can lead to ostracization), and generally, it’s kind of a stonewall issue – especially so when people just don’t let things be and move on. Internet interactions don’t often work out as it does in everyone’s day-to-day life.

The Guild is a large place and while yes, certain groups do seem to have the majority of say over what happens within certain RP genres, I don't think total ostracization is possible. If there's one group of people who have ostracized you, then there's bound to be another that will accept you even if it takes some time to find them. If there's a repeated pattern of ostracization, then the statistics would say you're the common denominator in which case it isn't fair to throw the blame elsewhere when it might be time to re-examine yourself.

Honestly, as much as I'd like a great "reset" it's probably an impossibility.

On the internet, a reset is a lot easier than in real life. A new user account, a new aesthetic, etc. Though I guess that's arguably cheating since you're skirting around the underlying issues by pretending to be somebody else. I guess the real challenge here is not how to 'end cliques' or how to break into new ones, but how can we repair bridges and allow ourselves to be seen for who we are instead of who people say we are. Mods talk, GMs talk, players talk. It's impossible to escape a reputation of some kind, so the best step forward would be to put the onus on yourself to be the difference instead of waiting for everyone else to make the change first.
L E T ' S T A L K: A C O M M U N I T Y D I S C U S S I O N T H R E A D

As a community, I think the conversations found in the roleplaying discussion are very important to the Roleplaying Community as a whole particularly when discussing the evolving trends and patterns found both here and on other roleplaying websites and mediums. In my previous thread about Discord, there was one issue that kept coming up again and again;

Toxic behavior is ubiquitous; the difference between having it in a Discord server versus an OOC is the rate at which it happens.

The complaint of cliques on discord could have been applied to the guild long before discord was popularized/existed. It just was behind "closed doors." cliques gravitate towards each others rps and its not necessarily a completely bad thing (it is better to rp with people you know you'll mesh well with) But of course there is always the issue of inclusion/exclusion. I don't think it was any harder to "talk shit" about other users/threads with the PM system or on skype or texts or whatever. "talking shit" is going to happen organically whether discord is there or not, imo there are other venues one could reasonably do the same.

I feel discord simply made it more OPEN and obvious.

As for clique warfare, it has always been around; it's just easier to link up with others who have the same view and opinion. Venture into Reddit and you'll see toxic people, venture into Twitter and you'll see toxic people, and even on Facebook where your friends have a real life name and description of their life and you will see toxic people. The issue with RPG is that too many people place this toxicity and clique warfare above their roleplaying experience to either spend the time arguing with each other and not RPing at all. This is a limited interest site with only a small selection pool of people, and all you will be doing is harming the growth and potential for players to join your RPs if you involve cliques.

Negatives wise, cliques are definitely a thing. It's up to the GM/server owner to enforce equal participation and opportunity. People will naturally prefer old friends over new ones, so it's up to the server owner/GM/chatroom staff to make sure that no one is being excluded or left out. You can't just hope for an inclusive environment. You need to make sure one happens. I have also found that fights break out easily on discord between players, so to counteract this I've appointed a chat moderator from one of my trusted RPers and that has been helping keep things civil whenever tensions arise (we're human, tensions will happen).

One thing I've seen kill so many fucking Discords and RPs and drive players away is if toxic people are tolerated; there's places on the internet to argue politics all day (let's face it, the only people who want to talk about politics all day are the ones who are so set in their ways are the ones who will never, ever challenge their views or listen respectfully to counterpoints), and I don't see how tolerating racist, homophobic, or sexist bullshit is even a thing. I can't count the number of times I've had people come to me in private and talk about being uncomfortable or feeling unwelcome by someone because of really toxic behaviour, and those people are way better roleplayers than the toxic people almost all of the time.

Discord is where a lot of clique-think meets reality, and the result is a mess. Not a surprise.

Yeah, I can see Discord increasing the level of toxic drama, just as much as it increases convenience and functionality for GMs and RPers. Staff often finds it's a very small percentage of people that participate in the toxic drama and RP regularly. You're usually around for one, or the other, rarely both. Discord exposes people that way.

In all seriousness, these issues have been around forever, and imho have actually decreased a lot, lmao. Toxicity is on the down especially recently (or at least it has been in my experience. I'm sure stuff has happened behind the scenes) compared to the good old days where the Narutards thought everyone that made a Naruto RP was infringing on their copyright and should be KICKED BANNED AND DELETED FROM ORBIT for even thinking about Naruto and the same goes for other vapid and mundane shit like 'uhhhhhhhh my character sheet setup got stolen' which evolved into its own whole ass drama.

If anything the topic of 'toxic' drama has become less vapid and more sincere in my eyes -- most of the things I've seen people argue about has been shit that deserves some form of speaking up about and the fact that discord allows you to directly call someone out for being a moron is pretty great. If doing so is labelled toxic then I'm not sure what isn't toxic.

EDIT: for clarification, I do think labelling everything that makes you upsetti spaghetti bolognesi as 'toxic' just because someone won't take dumb shit and calls you out is pretty immature and disregards the real issue i.e. you might just be a twat and if someone calls you a twat, that's not toxic, that's calling a spade a spade.

I’ll throw in that RP Discord groups can be uncomfortable for people with anxiety or who lean on Internet anonymity because it adds a social pressure to the roleplaying experience that wouldn’t normally be there. It can be tough when you’re expected to assimilate in a chat room with strangers of various backgrounds, experiences, and age ranges.

Toxic Behavior.

Now I'm not looking to create world peace here, but we're talking about people who all share the same hobby and likely the same interests, or at least overlapping ones if they're applying for the same RP. So why can't we all get along? We do we lash out at one another or create memes to mock another by taking their comments out of context? Why are we so downright horrible to each other when we barely know the person behind the other screen.

Fall outs between players, GMs etc can kill an RP quicker than any other factor. So what exactly is that creates these behaviours and how can they be stifled? What works for you as a GM/player when it comes to avoiding or negating toxicity around an RP or another player and what factors turn you off from joining an RP?

How can cliques be managed? How do we stop mob mentalities from grouping up on other players and how can new players break into the clique of a group established RP?

As always, please weigh in with your thoughts and opinions below. Let's have a civil discussion!
