CLOSED - Ultimate One Universe: Season One

Have we got a more exact deadline for season's close and what will happen time-wise at the conclusion?

As I said before... writing ahead and trying to get a sense of everything. Season 2 is still the next year, for example?

I've been basing mine on ending 30th of September, and season one covering a whole year, or at least season 2 starting in the next year.

It's September 25th. Season 2 is three months after the end of Season 1, so if you took this game to be in real time, that would place it starting up at Christmas - or if you're feeling adventurous, New Years. Though you could honestly just ignore whatever holiday is taking place and just mention "it's cold as balls" and leave it there.

Since we're in the habit of starting random conversations, I figure I'd get today's in.

With the One Universe concept in mind, not necessarily even for this game, which heroes (or villains) do you think would make a good couple?

I struggled for awhile to settle on someone for Batman to romance, given I've seen games where he's shacked up with Black Cat and Elektra and didn't want to repeat that, but it's surprisingly hard to think of a good pairing for him.

Meanwhile, when I was playing Superman way back when, I set up a potential pairing of Clark and (at the time, Carol Danvers as) Ms. Marvel.

Superman

I have to go with Earth One on this. It's colourful, it invokes all the classic elements and it just has a nice look in my opinion.

I too have an affinity for the Earth One costume. Not so much the books themselves, since I haven't liked anything JMS has written since Thor, but I liked the minor tweaks to make the suit look more for the times without losing literally any of the classic elements. The yellow trim around the S reminds me of the Golden Age Superman, too.

Yup. Usually we do one set of awards halfway through and another after everything has wrapped. It'll keep the OOC going after the IC has finished until the next OOC is up.

@Master Bruce I've got to be honest, I've been kinda struggling with motivation lately. Ollie's a character I'll always have a soft spot for, but with a few posts in, and at least a week between each one, I've learned that I don't exactly have the same passion or influx of ideas for him anymore. I like most of what I've written out for him so far, but without the creative drive there, I don't want to burn myself out trying to force a story I'm not too keen on. That said, I want to let GA go in case someone else wants to pick him up (even though he should've been free a while ago, and I appreciate the leniency on that regard) and see if I can't go back to the drawing board, come up with a concept that engages me a bit more. I'd love to still be a part of the OOC in the meantime, if you'll have me. This is a great group, and I really enjoy the conversations we have here. It's not often that I get to debate about people in tights without my girlfriend telling me to get back in my box, lol.

Shame to see you let Ollie go, but I've been there. Sometimes you just hit a wall and can't move past it despite liking the character. Good to know that you're still sticking with us, though. The OOC is open to anyone, as long as they do their part in demanding that @Lord Wraith write two sex scenes per post and that @Sep caters to the masses by making Cliris (Clark/Iris) a thing.

Villains? Don't really have alot of preference for those, but I have a few ideas for my own rogue's gallery...

Joker

While my all-time favorite artist to touch The Clown Prince is forever Brian Bolland, Greg Capullo knocked it out of the park with a simple and sleek black suit attire that reminded me alot of some choice paintings that Alex Ross did in the late 90's. I don't know why, but while I'm all for the flamboyance of his usual purple and green get-up, the black tuxedo look is even more striking to me. Like Joker's perpetually attending a mass funeral that he's personally seeing to filling, or something. It also accents the white skin and green hair, making him almost more "clowny".

Bane

This is the only Bane that will ever exist for me. Many artists have tried to change it, some have even tried to emulate it, and it's always been without success. Something about the way Graham Nolan, specifically, drew the character has always been iconic to me. The mask is just right, the build is huge without making him The Hulk, and the OG Luchador look never fails.

Two-Face

Before this look, you could never, ever convince me of the idea that there'd be a better look for Harvey than in The Long Halloween or Batman: The Animated Series. But for some reason, this black and red combo really makes Dent stand out for the first time among Batman's other rogues. I also like the idea that Two-Face is so far gone that he doesn't see black and white anymore - he just sees black and red.

The Riddler

Despite it being his thing, I've never really been a fan of the question mark-all-over look that most artists give Nygma, whether it's the bodystocking or the suit. Hush really gave me the exact look I've always wanted for Edward, where it's very clearly The Riddler but simplified to it's most basic form. And I'll never not be a fan of the domino mask, no matter what brand of sunglasses you throw on him.

Ra's Al Ghul

Denny O'Neil once said that the appeal of Ra's Al Ghul is that, compared to Batman's other villains, he could pass for a dude on the street while looking of regality. Which I've always found strange, given the comics Ra's has a devil-horned haircut and a massive collared cape. Begins embodies everything Denny originally wanted in theory, while giving him a ninjitsu edge that makes him visually a cooler opponent for a character like Batman. Liam Neeson also passed off the regality without needing to look like Satan. I don't mind a green cloak or something for when he's travelling, but Ra's should always be rocking something that has him prepared for battle.

I have a few runner-up choices for best costume that I'mma post because... well, fuck it. I'mma post 'em, that's why. Consider these a "What look I'd go for if I were playing them in UOU" - or in the case of Batman, what look I'd go for if there were enough pictures of it.

Batman

I used to hate this design and think it were something straight out of the 90's, but I quickly grew to love it. There's something militaristic about it without seeming too much of a departure, and it's one of the few Batsuits to pull off black-on-black in the comics well enough.

Spider-Man

I appreciate any good costume that leans into a character's modis operandi (Batman Beyond, for example), and that's what the first suit that Otto Octavius used as Spidey does for me. It gives the classic look a legitimate run for it's money, making it look a little creepier, a little meaner, and overall more like how a guy with freaky Spider-powers should look. Basically, everything that would make The Bugle have a field day while also playing into Peter's love of sci-fi. Love it.

Superman

Weird belt buckle that I'd photoshop out aside, there's something about this suit I absolutely love. It gives the blue in Clark's outfit a much needed starkness, given one of my pet peeves is a Superman whose blue looks positively flat, while also retaining the bright red elements and eliminating the trunks in a good way. I also didn't mind the boots, as I felt the red ones had been done to death.

Wonder Woman

I know, I know. Blasphemy for including a design that isn't red and blue. But if Diana ever left the island of her own accord and didn't need to appear as a delegate to the US, this is how I imagine she'd look - fiercely armored and unabashedly Greek. The fact that this is Donna and not Diana aside, I love this.

Iron Man

As much as I can't get enough of the sleek red and gold designs to come out of the post-Extremis era, this little number that Rhodey wore during a brief stint as Iron Man really caught my eye. It looks like the greatest "in progress" suit that Tony never had, having all of the trappings of Iron Man while also seeming as though the inner layer is exposed, making it look more science fiction-y. It's like if Iron Man met TRON.

Batgirl

Likely to be my most controversial choice, but I stand by it. I've always been a fan of the classic black and yellow look for Babs, but this armored variation for The New 52 was one of the few positives of making her Batgirl again for me.
It looks functional and doesn't make Barbara look 14 no matter who draws her, which is why I'm one of the few to dislike the Burnside look entirely.

Captain America

Look, I love the stars-and-stripes. But if Cap existed in the real world and I got to pick his suit, this is friggin' perfect. It looks like a standard issue Special Ops uniform combined with a superhero suit, and gives Steve that militaristic edge that he'd need in a world long removed from World War II. This is basically the embodiment of the modern America in the way the original was the embodimemt of the 40's.

The Flash

While I've always liked the CW suit to a degree, it's always needed to look less like a motorcycle number and more like a suit that Barry puts on as one piece. The newest suit tried to do that and fell flat on it's face with a goofy looking mask, so this fan design scratches the itch I've had.

Green Arrow

I didh't originally choose a favorite for Ollie, but far and away this is it. Part Longbow Hunters, part the classic look, this is why I'll never truly appreciate the look that Amell sports on television. This, for me, is Green Arrow: the former survivalist turned the Robin Hood of a town so bent that it needs a guy with boxing glove arrows to save it.

In about roughly 30 posts. Give or take, really. We want people to be on their toes when it happens, so giving an exact date or post count would be foolish.

Twenty-seven and the year 1939 have been pretty prominent throughout my run. Gordon is Captain of the 27th Precinct in Gotham, The Roman's Holiday Massacre took place in 1939, and I'm sure some other examples are in there that I'm forgetting. Let it never be said that I don't lay it on thick.
