"Well, I was about 17 when my empathy started really kicking in. It was minor before that, which is why I was still able to stay with my family past the 13 year test. The government said that happens sometimes. So I guess I was normal-ish." And Roxy definitely wasn't. There was more story, there. She knew that Roxy had a father, but had never heard her mention her mother. Why would she have to support herself at such a young age?

She felt bad for not knowing these things. But it wasn't as if Roxy was an open book. If her past was rough, why would she be inclined to spill it to everyone?

"I distinctly remember you doing silly things at 16, Devvie. Nothing out of the ordinary, though, according to the parenting books." Mara was grinning. "I'll save the stories for the ride back."

"Or never. Never is good." Devika was trying not to roll her eyes too hard.
Jinny had several knives of her own. Her daggers, neatly strapped to either side of her belt. Her throwing knives hidden in a small backpack. And a hunting knife as well, tucked into one of her little combat boots. She was ready for anything, and determined to have a fun vacation. The scenery made a nice change of pace from the usual training environment. She'd never been on a mountain before. Even the air was different here.

Before they left, Jinny had looked up various tracks and signs of animals, and was determined to put this new knowledge to use. At the very least, she wanted to find one rabbit. Maybe something even smaller to start with. "Okay, I'm leading. Let's go... this way." She picked a general southern direction and started walking. Looking up and around, she could see flashes of color in the trees. Birds were all around them. Taking in the sunlight. Making noise at other birds. Diving and twittering and flying around. It was a very entertaining fact to her that the boy birds were the colorful ones. All in all it was very pretty.

Turning her attention downward, she started looking for signs of animals. It didn't take long for her to catch sight of a tuft of grayish brown fur stuck on a low branch. Not far from that were definitely some kind of droppings. "I'm on the hunt." Jinny said cheerfully, pointing them out and beelining in a new direction.

Her boots crunched through the underbrush as they went. After about 15 minutes, she piped up with a quiet voice full of frustration. "I'm making so much noise. I'm not quiet like back at home. There's too much stuff on the ground." She was getting on her own nerves, not being able to be stealthy.

"Help me." She didn't know how to step silent in a forest. Every step there seemed to be a leaf, or a rock, or a stick, something to get in her way.
I was actually thinking that while writing the post but I couldn't find where I put her backstory. Do you want me to fix it?
*cackle* I was joking! But it would be hilariously dark if it happened.
Thanks. It feels good.

Also that line is extremely ominous. Oh no, are they going to kill a park ranger?
I'm back. Sorry about the hiatus. Things are looking much better for me now. Quitting my old job, going back to school... it's going to be stressful but I'm actually looking forward to the change.
Two months was both plenty of time, and not time enough. For the first month, they focused on her weapons mainly. Training with the daggers and throwing knives, which she took to like a fish to water. They fit her style very well, just as they both had hoped. The training was very intense, however. The first week, Jinny fell asleep after they had finished for the day, in the middle of the training floor, and had to be carried to bed. But she rose to the challenge after that. Soon, she was treating the blades as extensions of herself. And yet, there was still so much more to learn.

She also began to train with guns. So far, that was a little troublesome, as most guns, even small pistols, had enough kick to throw off her aim. Even an accurate shot could be thrown off by outside force. Still, she kept at it, trying any gun Slade would allow in her hands. Her aim was good, but she was still just a bit to small to be anywhere near where she could be.

Her powers were a different story. Jinny had always been quite good with them, but Slade wanted her better. After some trial and error, they both determined that she was giving out too much power. Her mother had been precise, like a laser. Jinny was more like a beam cannon. It was something that had proved it could hurt her once before, and she had to learn to dial her power back to something more focused. It was difficult, but she was getting the hang of it.

Now, with only 2 weeks before the school year began, they were going on a little trip. Jinny had been promised a hunt, and she was going to get one.

“Be vewy, vewy quiet. I’m hunting wabbits.” Jinny quirked, as she looked out into the expanse of the forest from their little campfire.
Kijani stared at the empty space in the communicator where her father’s face had been. Honestly, this new potential husband had very poor timing. When Adam walked back in, she cleared her mind of the situation. There was nothing to do about it now.

“Nothing important to you. Just royal stuff.” She figured Adam had enough on his plate with their training. Or rather, his lack of it. So she would keep this development to herself for the time being.

“Thank you for setting up the tent. I’m not sure how well I’ll sleep. I’m very excited about all of this finally starting.” She smiled, and put the communicator away. “Let’s try and get some rest anyway.” She definitely wasn't going to sleep. She'd probably wind up reading documents under the blankets as was usual for her nowadays.
Sorry. I was going through some things, very poorly, but I'm getting back into it now. I always appreciate your patience.
“Well, Roxy, that’s quite a story. I admire your spirit, I truly do.” Mara smiled broadly.

Devika was surprised. She’d never heard anything about how Roxy had gotten the shop, even though she had asked once or twice. Roxy had usually shut her down. But her mother had gotten the story out in one meeting. She put people at ease, whether they knew it or not. It was part of what made her so good at her job.

“I’m not sure I remember what I was doing at 16.” Devika murmured thoughtfully. “Probably dumb teenager stuff.” She half grinned just thinking about it. “And here Roxy has a whole job. I’m impressed too.”
