Well now that I got the customary "post once" requirement out of the way....
HELLO
Welcome to my safe space. Well, about as safe as one space can be, I guess. If you are here looking for something, I am very sorry to disappoint you, but I made fresh cookies! Come sit a spell.
I guess I'll do some more in-depth stuff about myself. My name is Nick and I am 33 years old living in Illinois. I am a therapist and clinical responder (which is a fancy way of saying I go out on police calls to provide mental health assistance). Been doing therapy for a few years now and I absolutely love it!
I am a gay, cisgender man. I came out last year in January (smack dab in the middle of a pandemic. Timing was always my downfall). There is still much I am learning, but I am proud and happy to be who I really am and not have to hide it anymore!
I am an avid gamer, especially roleplaying games (cue surprised and shock noises). I also enjoy writing and reading, especially mysteries. I am not new to roleplay, I promise. I have been doing it for years now in different formats. I am experienced, even if it doesn't seem like it.
I use humor as a coping mechanism for sure, but I also like laughing and enjoying myself. Life can be pretty sad and upsetting for the most part and I don't want to add to it.
Whew! That got deep!
I will be poking my nose around in spaces and hoping to jump headfirst into this. Some interests I have in terms of roleplay settings include superheroes, DnD, science fiction/fantasy, mysteries, thrillers, horror stuffs, apocolypse, and espionage. And I am a fan of most things pop culture. If you have any suggestions or possible roleplays you think I would love, please let me know.
Verity sat in silence again. Then she decided not to.
"Ok how are we not talking about how incredibly fucked up this all is? I mean just yesterday we were all doing our own thing like nothing and now we have the dead coming back to life and attacking people like some fucking dystopian movie. I mean Christ I get we need to move forward but can we take a minute?"
Verity put her head in her hands and took some deep breaths. "Life as we knew it is over. I mean there's no positive spin on this. The military might step in, great. But nothing will be the same. And it isn't like what happened with Covid where people will get back to some semblance of normal. This is apocalyptic. This is End Times bullshit."
"Sorry. I needed to get that out. I've been holding it in ever since the warning was sent up. The cabin sounds nice. At least it will be away from a large city with tons of people. I can only imagine what's happening everywhere else."
I will say that when we start talking about it I think it would be best to have all teens or all adults do this. It doesn't seem plausible to me to have teens and adults running around doing things together (sketchy at best). If we do teens perhaps there ARE adults that can be trusted, like NPCs.
"I'm almost at the park. While I am here I need you to look into something."
Jessica strode along the street as she made her way towards Marcus Garvey Park where Mr. Mittens was said to be in a tree. Jessica was thankful it wasn't at Central Park with its hordes of tourists, or likely victims if Mr. Mittens decides to go wild on them. On the other side of the call Avery sat at her desk, a file in front of her.
"You mean like investigative work? You sure you don't need me to brew some coffee? Perhaps pick up your dry cleaning?"
"Avery, when have I ever asked you to pick up dry cleaning, mine or otherwise? You said you wanted to learn how to investigate I am giving you your chance."
Avery did a little wiggle of excitement before she got back to 'serious mode'. "Ok, tell me what you need."
"I need you to look into other instances of animals displaying superpowers. Scour online sources. I doubt it would be in any newspaper or more people would be talking about it, but check out local neighborhood forums, Reddit posts, videos, etc. If someone saw it, they definitely posted it. We live in the age of the cell phone, someone had to see something. Gather all that and have it ready."
Avery wrote it all down. "Got it. Anything else?"
Jessica pondered. If Avery was already looking online, perhaps she could look into one more thing. "Yes, see if there is any real estate that was recently up for grabs but is no longer. I want to find out where, if at all, these animals are being experimented on. Could be a wild goose chase but see if there's any listings. My guess is an escaped animal or two means they would pack up quickly and get out."
"I can do that. I have a cousin who works real estate. She may know something."
"Good, and be careful. If we are on the right track these people are performing dangerous experiments on defenseless animals. I doubt they would give up willingly if found out." She hung up, fully knowing Avery would get the job done. It was why she hired her.
Now to tangle a mutant cat.
Marcus Garvey park was small, but it still boasted a gorgeous view in a city surrounded by steel. Jessica looked around and listened. No screams. No cries. No sirens. There were a few people milling around but otherwise, things seemed calm. That meant Mr. Mittens had either moved on or no one found him yet.
Jessica looked up as she walked, keeping a close eye on the branches. She nearly collided with another walker and bit her tongue before she lashed out. She had been doing her best to not let anger get the better of her. For herself as well as her daughter. She stopped and mentally slapped herself.
She pulled out her phone and sent a quick text to her husband.
"Hey, on a case atm. Unsure how long it will be. I'll try to get home at a reasonable hour, but no promises.
And sidenote: heard of any animals demonstrating superpowers? Indulge me
Love you
She should have sent that before but in the streamline of this case she had forgotten.
As she approached one of the northern edges of the park she heard a small sound. She stopped and listened. She heard it again. The tiniest noise but she heard it more when she approached a tree in the corner. She looked up and saw the branches move just slightly.
She continued to stare, hoping it wasn't just some squirrel. As she did she noted a splash of color. She heard the sound again and it was more familiar this close to it.
A small meow.
"Gotcha Mr. Mittens."
Jessica flew up slowly. She didn't want to freak the cat out and have it...well...vaporize her. As she flew up and up she kept an eye out. Eventually she reached the top and, on one of the extended branches, sat an orange cat. It looked at her. She looked at it. It kept still but its attention was diverted to licking itself. "Ok Mr. Mittens. I just want to take you home to your dad. Can we be cool?"
She flew closer. Again slowly. As she did she reached out, hoping to pet it a bit to show she was here in good faith.
Her hand got closer and closer. She almost felt it's her on her fingers when she noticed Mr. Mittens had turned its head to face her. She inched more so before she saw something.
She faced him again and noticed its eyes were...green?
"Oh shit!"
Jessica dropped just as Mr. Mittens unleashed a blast from its eyes. It scorched some of the branches and leaves but it missed her.
She looked up and the cat stared at her again, but didn't seem to want to attack.
Jessica looked around to see if anyone noticed. Surely someone would have seen the blast of green laser shooting off.
No one was panicking it seemed. Then she heard it. A small cry and a crash. Jessica hesitated to look but she knew she had to. One of he light posts in the park had fallen, sliced through and laid on the ground. Thankfully no one was hurt, but people were still rightfully concerned and looked in her direction. And, like true human fashion, began walking over.
Post count doesn't mean anything, in the grand scheme. What matters is the content, the desire to want to add to a story, how well you can collaborate with everyone, and your willingness to work through and be respectful. That last one, I think, is important and one that I, myself, have struggled with in the past and still do. I haven't been here long but I have seen my fair share of RPs get up and running only to die slowly because people leave, for one reason or another. I do not discount people with real-life situations, but more often than not I see people just dip with no word, which is unfair to the others you are playing with.
So as long as you are mindful in this, and if you do need to exit you inform others (mainly the GM), then I do not think anyone will have an issue.
Ok hopping off my soapbox now. I welcome any and all who want to create fantastic stories!
Millicent sat on her couch with the letter opened in front of her. She eyed it like she was eyeing a street magician performing for pennies on a Santa Monica street; with a watchful eye for the obvious tricks of the trade.
It wasn't that she was in disbelief. She had honors before. Awards. Performances in her honor. This was..something else though. The letter itself gave off a certain vibe. It was as if the letter itself was a person who was doing their best to give compliment after compliment to bring her up to a false sense of pride before crashing it all down. Even in her field there were others who would rather see her dead on the street than up on the stage.
Millicent pondered the situation. She had been under a certain amount of stress as of late. Stress that was impacting her personal life as well as her professional one. Surely some time off was warranted. Not only that, the trip was free. Plane ride there and a generous stipend for the time she would be away. And she was in a nice position to be able to take some time off.
What drove her the most was the prize. $1,000,000 was nothing to sneeze at. Even if she didn't win it, she would enjoy the break.
She decided. She could do with a small vacation. What's the worst that could happen?
The trip there was unlike anything she had experienced before. She never had a plane ride to herself and waited on the entire time. That in itself was worth the time away she took. The flight was long but she had gotten so relaxed it passed by like nothing. She hadn't had a restful nights sleep ever since...
Well that didn't matter now did it?
Upon arriving in France she met up with the limo driver and was sped away. She was almost hopeful it would be a singular journey there like the plane ride, but no such luck. She was with a few others who made light conversation. She joined in to an extent. Name given. Oh that joke was funny I should laugh at it. Things like that. But in a sense the others there were competition and competition brought out the worst in people. It would not serve her well to dish out all of her secrets.
It was a beautiful sight. Millicent had always wanted to come to France, though she heard things like how French people hated Americans or how dirty the country actually was. And while all of that might be true, in this instance she was met with grandeur and wonder. Millicent took a moment outside to take it all in. She needed this.
Millicent followed some of the others inside but she made a beeline for the notice board. It held her information as well as what her room would be. Turkish Rose. A quaint name. Millicent glanced around and decided she would find her room and scope it out before leaving and checking out the place itself.
Mllicent followed a rather handsome man upstairs but he made his own way to the room assigned to him, so Millicent foudn hers. Inside she noted the dated decor. That wasn't terrible. After all she was here for free. The painting depicted a desert that gave off some comfort. What impressed her was access to a balcony with some seats. She could take the morning air aftwer waking up. The room did nicely.
She further checked out the bathroom and noticed it was a shared one with someone in the adjoining bedroom. That was...less nice. Millicent liked her own space. Preferred it really. But again, she was here for free for a time. She would make the most of it. Perhaps the other person would be friendly and clean. And even if they weren't they would likely not interact too much during this.
Overall, she was impressed. Impressed and wary. The wariness had lingered ever since she got the note. It still sat with her. Had she ever heard of the La Lune family? In a sense, yes. They were important enough to be the topic of rumors abound, but what did they know of her?
Perhaps a tour of the place was in order. Once she was settled Millicent opened her bedroom door and made her way into the hallway.
