Everyone has their inner demons. For Illyana Rasputin, however, this is not a figurative statement. Illyana was a sweet child, light-hearted and warm, ever loving to her family and friends. Everything changed when she was abducted from the X-Mansion by the demon Belasco. A decade in a literal hellscape called Limbo fighting for her very existence, fighting for her very life, has left Illyana Rasputin an incredibly different personality from the little girl that was lured into Limbo by the demon Belasco.
Illyana is a hero, but she is far from the most righteous of X-Men. She has been manipulative, cunning, ruthless, and sometimes even cruel. Illyana hates her demonic side, and has gone to extraordinary lengths to regain her soul. She does, however, understand her responsibility as ruler of Limbo, seeing herself as a sort of warden to the demons and dread lords that exist within. She is very single-minded, and prefers to deal with her problems on her own, even if it means putting others in danger. Illyana also considers herself damned, and does not view herself as someone worth saving.
Though it rarely seems to surface, her sexuality is best described as Pansexual.

Born to a tight-knit family belonging to a farming collective in the backwoods of Siberia during the waning days of the U.S.S.R. What Illyana remembers of her childhood is sweet and loving. In truth, it feels as if a life that belonged to some other girl, in some other dimension. When she was six years old she was caught in the track of a run-away tractors. It was only the activation of her older brother Piotr's mutant ability as the metallic Colossus that saved Illyana from an early death.
Illyana was kidnapped by the villain Arcade in an elaborate plot to force members of the X-Men to battle Doctor Doom on his behalf. The mutant heroes were able to save their loved ones during the ordeal and let Doom deal with Arcade. Instead of immediately return to Russia and their parents, Illyana was brought to the X-Mansion to spend some time with the brother that saved her life and then had to leave to become a hero to more people than just his little sister. It was during her time at the X-Mansion that Illyana was targetted by the demon Belasco to use her soul in a plot to free his demonic lord masters onto Earth and make it their own personal hellscape.
Variants of Kitty Pryde and Storm have also been taken to Belasco's hell dimension called Limbo. Without the other, older, mutants there is every possibility that Illyana doesn't last a day in Limbo. With their help, however, she learns to survive. In time she learns to do more than survive, and begins fighting the very demons of Limbo. In time the three come up with a goal, and the beginnings of a plan: to defeat Belasco and free themselves with his power. After over a decade in this demonic hell the three have learned to survive and even see themselves as beginning to thrive as Storm taught her magic, and Kitty Pryde taught her combat. Over time her own mutant ability emerges, and she is able to create teleportation 'discs' that greatly assist the three in survival in Limbo.
Feeling stronger than ever after their decade-plus fighting and consolidating power, the three enact their plans, and attack Belasco. The demon overcomes them, slaying the alternate Kitty Pryde and Storm, forcing Illyana into submission as his protege in dark magic. For years Illyana is submitted to some of the harshest training and education imaginable. On the eve of Belasco's great success of turning shards of Illyana, Storm, and Kitty's soul into fuel for magical artifacts meant to unleash his ancient and dark gods, Illyana Rasputin finally turns on her demonic master.
Using pieces of her own soul, Illyana crafts the Soulsword, using this magical weapon combined with her own now varied and considerable skills to defeat Belasco once and for all, all by herself. In doing so Illyana becomes, herself, the Demon-Queen of Limbo. When she uses her new power to return herself to the dimension Belasco lured her from, she finds all the X-Men right where they were when she left. While it was fourteen years between her initial emergence in Limbo and her eventual defeat of Belasco and her return, to the Earth she left it was a matter of seconds.
The X-Men help the girl now known as Magik to adjust the best they can; Xavier downloads the English language to her brain, the Storm of this dimension attempts to give her guidance, the Kitty Pryde of this dimension give her the best friendship and advice she can offer...but it is a long, hard, road for the Illyana that she had to become to survive and escape to attain any amount of normalcy. She would go on to join the New Mutants, a team of the youngest mutants at the Xavier School, and there find some small measure of a new kind of normal.
Her relationship with her brother becomes frayed, she trains with Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, to ensure she has a tight grip on her magical prowess. In time the mutant Magik becomes a true heavy-hitter for the prime X-Men team, growing close to Kitty, Storm, and especially Cyclops.

Teleportation - Magik can teleport herself and others via circles of light dubbed stepping discs; though this is apparently an innate mutant power, her demonic corruption has seemingly inextricably tied the discs to limbo, so that they also appear there randomly without Magik summoning them, and so that the discs always travel via limbo. Possibly because limbo’s nexus status makes it close to all places and times, Magik can teleport across interstellar distances or transtemporally, and home in on specific people without knowing their exact location.

Sorcery - Magik is the Sorceress Supreme of her Limbo dimension. The extent of her powers there are all-powerful and the demons of Limbo did not dare challenge her. Magik had access to Belasco's store of mystical knowledge. Magik's sorcery was a unique mix of black magic, that she learned from Belasco, and white magic, taught by an alternative-reality Ororo Munroe. She was considered as a possible Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, and as an adult has trained with Doctor Strange. Due to her magical prowess Magik also possesses exceptional psionic shields able to thwart Earth’s most powerful telepaths.
Armed/Unarmed Combat - Illyana is a skilled swordswoman and created the Soulsword from her own lifeforce when she was trapped in the immortal demonic sorcerer Belasco's limbo dimension. It begins as a simple sword but evolves with use, both in appearance and power. The Soulsword can disrupt most spells or slay magical beings, but which can pass through normal people without harming them. When using the Soulsword, or using her magic, Illyana’s body becomes covered in a mysterious mystic armor known as Eldritch armor. The longer and more intense the combat, the more of her body will be covered in the armor. A lifetime fighting demons in Limbo, along with extensive combat training from various sources, has made Illyana one of mutantkind's foremost combatants.
