Eska

Inhale... Exhale... Eska breathed calmly, her eyes closed as she sat criss-crossed in her studio apartment. In front of her was a window from the floor to the ceiling, looking out over the city. The sunset glimmered off of the distant water and the buildings that stood between her home and the Yue Bay. A bowl sat in front of her that once possessed a small amount of water. That water now floated above it, moving in and out of it's three states. She took one final, deep breath; enough to fill her lungs. After doing so, she slowly exhaled. The water before her froze into a ball of ice, then slowly melted. Finally it began to shimmer in the light of the sunset as it began to steam, seemingly dissipating into the air around her. Her brows furrowed lightly as she took another deep breath, attempting to gather the water molecules she'd just released into the air back into it's liquid state. While she managed to gather a small drop or two of water, she did not gather as much as before.

Eska opened her eyes to look upon what she'd gathered, and subsequently let out a sigh. The water fell from the air, landing with a pitiful splash that barely touched the rims of the bowl. While she may have known plenty of ways to bend water, from steam to icicles to mini-tsunami waves, she'd taken up the task of learning to draw water from the air around her. Surely she would need to learn the technique if she was to become a master water bender. She pushed her hair back from her face and rested her elbow on her knee, staring down at the tiny pool of water. She couldn't wait to live in the Southern Water Tribe. There, she would finally have a master that could focus on her lessons. Here in the city, it seemed that everyone was dying to master their element.

The light of the sunset soon faded, and the moon shone much brighter than the lights of the city. Eska bathed in it's light for a few minutes before getting the urge to bend more than just a handful of water. She stood and grabbed her gym bag and keys, locking the door on her way out. Soon she was stepping out onto the street, breathing in the air of the city. She turned to the right and headed towards the gym where she worked, simultaneously putting her hair up into a thick bun. During the day, it was bustling with young prospective benders. There were lessons for every type of bender, ranging from a beginners level to a moderate level. Eska taught a basic water bending lesson to young water benders, and also taught a short class on the importance of being in balance with the spirits once a week. While it wasn't what Eska wanted to do for the rest of her life, it paid enough to live on and provided her with a free gym. Also, every now and then she sparred with other benders. Some of them training to be pro-benders. The job had plenty of perks.

Eska headed to an entrance that led straight into the gym. She'd been gifted a personal key by the owner, whom she knew only gave them out to special employees. She slipped quietly inside and flipped a switch next to the door. The lights flickered on, illuminating the decently sized room. It was similar to that of a pro-bending gym, with equipment for each type of bender to use. Mirrors lined wall on the far side of the room so that benders could see their form and adjust it themselves. The room itself was invisibly divided into five sections. Four sections with equipment for each element and one extra section for sparring. The gym sometimes had non-bending fighting lessons, and that section was usually meant for them to practice. The water bending equipment laid in the far right corner of the gym, and Eska set her bag down as she looked upon the section. It was nothing like the water bending gyms in the water tribes, but at night when the gym was closed Eska freely moved throughout the entire gym.

After a brief warm-up, Eska began to train. She pulled water from two buckets sitting in front of the mirrors, watching herself in the mirror as she gracefully moved throughout the gym. She practiced many techniques, at one point attempting higher level attacks on a target dummy. Within two hours, she'd worked up a sweat and worked through her urge to practice. She stepped towards her gym bag and pulled out a water bottle. As she chugged the water down, she swiped her hand across her forehead. The droplets of sweat clinging to her body were slowly pulled from her, shortly being deposited in a sweat towel nearby. After finishing the bottle of water, she sat down on a bench to catch her breath. She didn't feel tired yet, but she knew that she needed to pace herself in order to continue. Only a few more months until I'm a master, she thought, feeling determined and excited for what was to come.

Beneath those happy feelings, though, Eska really had no clue what to do with her life. Would she continue to train benders, or would she try to get a job in the government like her father? She wouldn't mind being an advocate for either of the water tribes. From the way her father was beginning to talk, it seemed as if she wouldn't need to pick between the tribes after all. Could the two really merge, despite the issues that separated them during Avatar Korra's time? After all, the Southern Water Tribe had been independent from the North for years now. Her grandmother was a child during the Water Tribe's Civil War. Eska had listened to her stories countless times, thrilled yet terrified by the eyewitness accounts told by her nana. The avatar had been strongly against a unison Water Tribe, but the spirit portals connected the two now. Would a union of the two tribes really be all that bad in this age?
It's 2 am here so if the post is a little wonky forgive me. BUT, here it is!
When do we start?
Should we post our characters into the character tab?
@Leah Gotcha. Can’t wait to start :)

EDIT: I tweaked her bio a bit to adjust the Equalist comment.
Interested in making a water bender!

(Bit of a long post. Sorry!)

Xavier

An audible sigh filled Xavier's office. He sat back in his chair, crossing his arms on his chest as he read the recent reports from the staff. His brows furrowed in annoyance. Countless subjects refused to comply, and he was beginning to lose what little patience he had. He sat forward and clicked on the surveillance footage of the experiments he deemed the most important. Mostly because they were the ones he'd invested the most in. He knew each of them had mutated with 100% success. Unfortunately the human side of them was proving to be the only variable he had not accounted for when he first began these experiments.

He clicked through four different cameras. One for a particularly difficult subject named Carmen currently in what he called the fridge, another on a set of triplets. Each of the triplets were being subjected to various rough treatments. The other two were of the subjects named Alex and Vayne, who had yet to comply as well.

Finally he landed on footage of the last subject. Elie. She'd only been at the lab for a month, and had shown no signs of any mutation. It wouldn't be long before she was scheduled for another experiment to make the mutation develop further. Maybe then she would finally make herself worthy in the eyes of the government. She was a fiesty subject, and he grinned as he watched clips of her thrashing at the guards. He saw her now in an isolation room, sitting in her little corner looking defeated. "Why is she holding her arm?" He thought aloud, looking around at the room. Had she punched the wall? He sat straighter, smirking as he finally noticed the door to her cell. "So, she finally figured it out. And damaged the door, no less." He stood, gathering a few guards to take with him as he headed towards the isolation ward.

He nodded to the guard outside of her door, who promptly moved to the side to let Xavier approach it. "Don't let her give you another black eye this time, Andrews," he quipped, smirking at the guards before he scanned his ID card and pulled open the door. The guards filed into the room first, and Xavier followed to stand in the middle of them.

Elie gasped softly as the door swung open, her heart immediately beginning to race. She moved to her feet, hiding her wrist behind her back as if she were a frightened child. She'd done something wrong, and they were here to punish her. Her gaze moved over the guards, finally resting on the man in the middle of them. She had only seen him once, but the memory made her skin crawl. She shifted in her spot, clenching her jaw as she tried to hide her fear.

Xavier looked the girl over, noticing how she hid her arm from view. He turned slightly, shaking his finger at the door. "Do you have something to tell us, Elie?" He said condescendingly. If she was going to act like a child, he was going to treat her like one. Elie glanced at the door before looking back to him. She didn't answer, preferring not to speak. It was obvious enough what had happened.

Xavier sighed, feeling rather irritated that she remained silent. "Show me your arm." He commanded firmly. Elie swallowed, looking down at the floor before she moved her arm into sight. "It's fine," she said, wiggling her fingers to prove that it still worked. Was she defective? Would they kill her if she was a failed experiment?

Xavier frowned, looking to Andrews. "Hold her still. It looks like there's an issue with her abilities." He turned to examine the door, listening as he heard the guards close in on Elie to grab her. Elie stepped backwards, feeling her heart race within her chest as the guards reached for her. She struggled against them, but they quickly overpowered her. Andrews held her right arm in one hand, the other gripping her hair tightly to ensure that she would comply. The other guards grabbed her other arm, pushing her roughly towards Xavier.

The man turned from the door, smiling at the sight before him. "Now, no nasty tricks, okay Elie?" He purred as he stepped over to her. He grabbed her wrist with both hands, hearing her gasp in pain. After a quick feel, he sighed softly and looked up at her. "What have you done to yourself, Elie? I thought you were smarter than this."

Elie jerked against the guard's grip, sticking her chin out as she glared at Xavier. "You did this to me, so why don't you tell me?" She hissed. Andrews tightened his grip on her hair and she grimaced, going limp within the guard's grips so that they wouldn't hold her so tightly.

Xavier shook his head, tsking at her remark. "Take her to a demonstration room and get her to repeat whatever she did to this door. If she says her arm is fine, then she can surely do it again." He stared into her eyes, a look of determination on his face. "I don't care if you have to beat it out of her or not. Just keep away from that pretty face." The guards all nodded, beginning to force her towards the door. Elie struggled to keep her footing, now beginning to panic as she worried if she could even repeat the act again. She felt the panic swell in her chest, feeling as if her body were shaking in fear. It felt as if the whole room was shaking as well. Xavier frowned as he felt something strange in the air, stepping aside to let them pass as he watched Elie closely.

It was then that the building's security alarm went off, filling the room with a sound that made Elie's ears hurt after the silence of the isolation room. Xavier growled, raising a hand to halt the men. "Nevermind. We'll come back to her after we figure out what's going on. Maybe then she'll be willing to explain herself." The guards grunted, each visibly disappointed that they'd have to wait to return the bruises that Elie had given them. They turned and threw her to the floor in the back of the cell. Elie caught herself, whimpering lightly as she put her weight on her wrist. She turned to see them all heading towards the door, and the frustration of being locked away in this room again overwhelmed her.

"No!" She yelled, raising her left palm towards them and releasing a second wave of pent up energy at them. A blast of vibrations released from her palm, creating a shockwave that knocked all of the men off of their feet. Two guards hit their head against the wall, emanating an audible crack as they were incapacitated. Andrews was thrown against the door to the cell, and Xavier fell face first into the concrete.

Elie panted, quickly moving to her feet as she realized what she had done to them. She looked down at her hands, glad to feel no pain in her left arm at all. That was lucky, she thought, looking over each of the men. What now? She took a deep breath, still feeling panicked about her current situation. If they got up, she was surely going to be punished severely. Moving quickly she stepped over to Xavier, who was beginning to groan and shift in his spot. With only a moment's hesitation she grabbed the ID card from his pocket and rushed towards the door to the cell. She pushed it closed just in time to see Xavier look up at her. His nose was broken and bloodied, and he looked at her as if he wanted to kill.

Elie slammed the door shut in his face, panting as she stepped away from the door and the unconscious body of Andrews. The alarms in the hallway rang in her ears, and in the distance she could hear yelling and screaming. What now? She thought again, looking around as she tried to decide which direction to go.
