Meadow Ridge Institute. . .

It was nice to walk through campus again after what felt like such a long break. The campus was alive with students, a soft breeze rustled the returning leaves and the blossoms on the trees. The air was the perfect temperature: not too hot yet, but not as cold as the winter had been. The weather was a nice middle ground between the two seasons. Hanae took her time as she headed towards the Blossom Auditorium. Her head was tilted towards the sky, a peaceful smile on her face as the sun warmed her cheeks.

This was her favorite time of the year. She was going to begin new, exciting classes. She was no longer a 1st year student now, so she had more liberty with her class schedule. She was also extremely excited for soccer season to begin. She'd practiced all summer, and even took up running to stay in shape. She was determined to crush it on the field, and she was also secretly hoping to become soccer captain in her 3rd year. It would also be nice to see all of her old soccer friends again.

She was nearing the auditorium now, but she slowed to a stop to enjoy one more moment outside. She didn't plan to stay long at the meet and greet, but she would walk through to say hello to her old friends and teachers. Then she'd go to do one of her favorite things on campus. Read. They had an entire day to themselves before classes started and Hanae intended to catch up on her latest novel before her schedule didn't allow as much time to do so. She'd go to one of her most peaceful spots, and spend the entire day hidden from the rest of the campus. Well, hopefully.

The auditorium was packed as she walked in, but she managed to find a seat towards the back of the room. She nodded a polite hello to the students around her before she settled in her chair. She hadn't recognized anyone so far, but everyone she knew had grown a little over the summer. She certainly had. Her hair was longer, and she had definitely grown an inch or two. Other areas had grown as well, but she hoped that it didn't draw too much attention. She found herself subconsciously tugging her skirt down her thighs.

Thankfully, the speech that Head Dean Ichikawa gave the students was short. Hanae stood, shuffling out of the auditorium doors with the crowd. She almost considered skipping the meet and greet entirely until she noticed the table for the girl's soccer team. Two of her favorite teachers were standing behind it, and Hanae brightened at the sight of her coaches. She approached the table, giving the two women a friendly smile and wave.

"Ohayō gozaimasu, Naya-sensei, Hatano-sensei!"

“A-Ah. Sou desu ne.”

Eli's eyes glanced over the young man's expression as she tried to decipher what he said by his emotions. His smile was wide, but she could see a hint of fear in his eyes. The only reason that he wouldn't be thrilled by Cara's translating capabilities would be that he was trying not to speak at all. Her eyebrows furrowed for a split second before the right eyebrow rose in realization. He was lying. This guy was trying to get out of talking to them. A small laugh burst from her lips, but she quickly covered her mouth with her hand to stop herself from laughing further. He continued the lie by responding to her question through Cara. It was only when Keaton made her own extremely sarcastic comment on the matter that Eli released another bout of muffled giggles through her hand. To be honest, it was hilarious that this guy had even tried in the first place. He wasn't that naive to think that no one would notice, right? Especially with Keaton here.

Nicholas answered her question next, which forced Eli to quell her amusement. She looked to the tall, friendly newbie and nodded to let him know that she was listening. Still, her lips were pressed tightly together in a smile so that she wouldn't laugh again. In between Nicholas's statements, her eyes glanced between Keaton and Gen. Oh, man, I hope he knows how to recover from that.

". . . But instead I wandered into this party. With all the stuff going on around the place I feel really bad for everybody and would love to help improve morale but, I guess, partying isn't really something I've ever done much of. This is all new ground for me."

Eli's smile withered, his empathy for the rest of the parahumans on The Promise reminding her why they were having this get-together in the first place. She nodded, agreeing with what he said as she looked into his eyes. At least she wasn't the only one that felt this way. She was going to voice her opinion on the matter, but a loud beeping noise drew both of their attention towards Archie. He was shaking his hand, and Eli noticed the heart monitor on his wrist for the first time. Nicholas moved to ask him if he was okay, but Eli was too caught up in wondering why he wore a monitor to react to it. Her eyes moved over Archie's face slowly. Why did he need a monitor? Only people with serious parahuman "conditions" wore them. Dangerous parahumans wore them. How could someone like Archie need one? And what had set it off in the first place?

"Lynn, pour me some tequila."

Eli looked away from Archie, her focus on the monitor broken as she was reminded of alcohol. OH, right. Drink, drink, drink. She thought to herself, raising her cup to her mouth and downing the rest of its contents. She lowered the cup, wiping the edge of her lips with the sleeve of her jacket. She looked into the cup for a moment, almost disappointed that it was empty now. Did she want more to drink? Did she need more? She was definitely drunk, but she wasn't sure how drunk.

"I'll have some, too, Lynn." She said as she turned to place her cup next to Keaton's. Only, when she looked, she saw that Keaton's cup was spilling over the sides. Lynn was frozen in place, but her hair was ablaze with color. Her eyes were glazed over, making it look like she was stuck somewhere deep inside of her mind. "Lynn-" She didn't need to say anything more. She was startled back into reality, on her own. She didn't look alright. This was a side of Lynn that Eli had never seen before. Eli looked over at Keaton, her eyes expressing her concern for Lynn.

Lynn gave the group an obviously improvised excuse to leave before she made her way into the woods. Eli pressed her lips together. For a split second she considered letting the girl have her peace, but she knew not to let someone that drunk run off into the woods alone. Anything could happen to them. And even if she just needed to puke it out, Eli knew that there was something else going on with her. The light of Lynn's hair quickly faded into the dark of the forest. Eli looked over at Keaton one last time. Did she want to go after her, too? Would it be better if Keaton went, because she knew Lynn better?

No. That doesn't matter. I'm going, too. Eli decided as she set her empty cup on the table. She bent down below the table, reaching for a case of water bottles that were ready to grab for anyone that needed them. "I'm gonna bring her a bottle of water and make sure she's okay." She let Keaton know before turning to see Gen again. "It was nice to meet you, Gen. I hope you have a good night." She gave him an amused smile, reminded of his earlier embarrassment, before heading out into the forest.

The amusement vanished quickly as her concern for Lynn returned. She was moving through the forest, looking and listening for any sign of Lynn. Her foot stumbled on a root, but she caught her footing quickly before spotting a flicker of light ahead of her. Out of relief, she let out a breath of air and slowed her pace. She was careful about where she stepped, now, and she was cautious as she approached Lynn. The young girl was leaning back against a tree, playing with a singed petal from the flowers around her. Eli couldn't help but smile softly. Even though Lynn looked like she was fucked up, the color in her hair and the color of the petals painted a pretty picture.

"Lynn? Are you feeling okay?" She asked as she approached her. She knelt down in front of the girl, admiring the slightly burnt petal in Lynn’s hand. She then held up the water bottle in her own. ”Here. This should help.”

Elara was tense as she felt Psylocke move to stand nearby. Her eyes moved to the purple blade of energy that formed in the woman's hand. As she spoke to the strange man in green, Elara moved her eyes back to him. He didn't belong here, so what was he doing here? Her calm expression turned into a look of suspicion, and she curled her hands into fists. She was prepared for an offensive attack, if he chose to act that way.

Instead, he gave Psylocke an expression of pure anger. Her eyebrows furrowed. If you are Elizabeth Braddock? Her eyes glanced at the woman next to her to see how Psylocke reacted to that statement. Then her eyes moved back to the man.

"If you aren't going to tell us who you are, then I suggest you tell us who you are here to avenge." She stated, feeling as if she needed to get some of the attention off of her partner. "How did you know that you would find the person you're looking for here?"

As Keaton retold her first experience with alcohol, Eli listened with a small grimace. Rum didn't sound like the best, first liquor to taste. Sure, it was fantastic mixed with literally anything, but straight? Yuck.

She didn't know what to think about what she said about the rich kids getting grounded. Were parties on The Promise anything like a high school party on Earth? There were definitely rich kids on The Promise, too. Eli imagined the rich kid parties on Earth set in huge mansions. With almost movie theater sized TV's and huge swimming pools in the backyard. Stuff she remembered seeing in TV shows and movies.

Keaton's face fell and she grew silent for a few moments, which made Eli feel sympathy for her. She had to keep reminding herself that her new friends had only been here for a month. They were still grieving for the lives they left behind. Eli gave Keaton a small smile after she changed the topic. She seemed to be doing better than most of the newbies she'd met over the years, but she reminded herself to ask Keaton how she was doing with the transition some other time.

Her attention turned to Lynn next. The girl's expression was contagious, and Eli returned Lynn's wide smile with one of her own. Her eyes crinkled at the edges, thoroughly enjoying Lynn's drunk personality. Was this the real Lynn shining through? Now that she was drunk off her ass, Lynn seemed as if the weight of the world had lifted from her shoulders. This was how a girl her age should act, anyways, right? How old was she, anyways? She couldn't have been more than 16. Eli's eyes followed Lynn's spare hand to the scar on her nose. How did a young girl get so many scars?

Unfortunately, Lynn's rambling was interrupted as the 'Fish' arrived. Eli turned to greet him, a smile on her face. He spoke first, his words coming out slowly and with a thick Japanese accent. She knew a way to overcome the language barrier, if he wasn't great with English.

"Don't worry, I have something for the language barri- ... berry, bear... barrier."

Lynn's slurs drew an amused grin from Eli and she looked to share the laugh with Keaton and Amelia. It was then that she realized that Amelia was talking to someone, and Keaton was looking in their direction. She followed her gaze to see Archie and Natalie by the drink table. Wow! She thought, her eyes on how amazing Natalie looked. Seriously, this girl is a dark angel. Archie even looked like a dressed up version of himself. If only he had a nice suit to go with her dress! They would have made homecoming king and queen. She gave Archie and Natalie a wave and a smile, deciding not to approach them. It was best that she give them their space for their first date. They would make it over to the group eventually.

So, Eli turned back to say hello to the Japanese newcomer. "Welcome to the party, Gen," she said with a smile. "If you're having trouble translating, Cara can help you with that. She's an amazing translator. Nothing like that google translate bullshit." She pulled out her own device, holding it up between the two. "Cara, how many languages can you speak?" She asked her phone.

"My database contains all active, written languages. What would you like me to translate, Eli?"

Eli grinned, looking up at Gen. "Told ya."

It was then that she noticed the other newbie coming their way. She lowered her phone, watching as he cleared the ground between them. He seemed shy as he approached, but once he was close enough to the group he revealed a happy smile. She smiled back as he grabbed a jello shot.

"My name is Nicholas but people tend to like Nic better. I hope that the evening has been kind to you."

"Hello, Nicholas," Eli began. "It's been a great evening so far." She gestured to the group. "These are my friends Gen, Lynn, Keaton, and Amelia." She gestured to each of them as she said their name, even giggling for a moment as she realized Gen and Lynn had rhymed. "And I'm Eli." She finished with a grin.

"So, what brought you two to this side of the woods?" She asked both Gen and Nicholas.

Elara listened to the multi-armed (figuratively and literally) woman explained who she was and if she'd seen the rogue team members. Elara raised an eyebrow as she simply revealed an elevator that would take them right to the group. This seems way too easy.

Psylocke and Spiral exchanged words. Elara glanced between the two women. Who is Mojo? And why weren't they briefed about any other potential Serval employees at the facility? Wouldn't it have been in Gardner's interest to tell them everything about this building before sending them into it?

Psylocke entered the elevator and waited for Elara. Elara was passing by when Spiral turned her direct attention on the masked mutant. Elara slowed to a stop as she spoke. Someone here could mess with perception as well? Was it another illusionist, like herself? She was wary of this stranger's information, her brows furrowing for a moment. Don't trust anyone in this building... not even the ones I came with? She was reminded of Psylocke's presence when the woman urged Elara to join her in the elevator.

"How do you know this? How can I trust you?"

Spiral smirked slightly at Elara. ”Because I have been around people like this before. Don't trust them, otherwise it may end up with you getting more than you bargained for."

Elara looked over the woman's facial expression. Could Spiral even be trusted here? She simply gave the woman a nod before turning to slowly join Psylocke in the elevator. She said nothing as the doors closed and lead them down the secret elevator shaft. Her eyes turned to Psylocke, looking over every feature of her in case there was some detail she missed. If it was an illusion or a mind trick, Elara would have been able to tell. There was always something off about an illusion. Some little tell. It took great masters of the ability to notice them.

The elevator soon began to slow to a stop, and Elara still hadn't noticed anything unusual about Pyslocke. Was that woman just trying to make her paranoid? No. She was just reminding me to be cautious. Whether it was a threat or a warning, I should always be vigilant. She frowned, facing the doors of the elevator. When they opened, she could see into a computer room.

There were no white lab coats or glasses wearing technologists inside. In fact, the room was completely empty aside from a man dressed in green leather. Elara looked him over quickly, deciding that he was actually, physically there. He was tall, muscular, and donned a hood and an archer's quiver of arrows on his back.

Similar to her greeting with Spiral, Elara raised both hands as she slowly stepped into the computer room. She didn't want to make this man assume she was hostile. She could see how tense he looked, crouched by the door. Nearby there was a computer screen with multiple files on it's desktop. What was he looking at on the computer? Did it have to do with the rogues, or some other issue? was he listening at the door for the rogue members?

Elara cleared her throat gently. If he hadn't heard the elevator's arrival, he would know there were there now. "Hello. We work for Serval Industries. We're here on a call about rogue team members. May I ask who you are?"

Eli returned to the group as casually as she could, jello shots in tow. She was watching Lynn as she approached. Lynn was smiling-no, grinning. Was this normal? Eli looked at Keaton's expression as she took the shots; the other girl looked relieved by Lynn's change in attitude. For a moment Keaton looked like she was trying to cover up an awkward moment, but she quickly recovered by handing out each of the shots.

She was introduced to the newcomer, and with the buzz of the party humming in Eli's ear she just smiled at her. Amelia. She'd known Lynn and Keaton for a while, from what she said. But why was she lying low? Had she done something wrong? She'd wait until they were on friendlier terms to ask that question. She looked a bit like a rule-breaker. Maybe they could pull a few pranks together later.

"I'm glad you came out tonight!" She managed to say with a wide smile before their attentions were on the jello shots. She squished the plastic cup above her mouth until the jello slid out of it and landed on her tongue. Beck definitely wasn't lying when he said they were strong. If the shots weren't enough for these girls, there was plenty more alcohol. Especially now that Lynn was offering one of her own bottles. Lynn already looked toasted. Literally and figuratively. Eli decided then to slow her own drinking down. Even if these girls could handle their alcohol, Eli wanted to be conscious enough to make sure they enjoyed their night. Plus, there was no telling what shenanigans the drunk parahumans around them might get up to. Eli could count on her friends to be responsible, but at this rate the party would keep growing until the alcohol ran out.

"Stop doing calculus on it and just drink." Lynn said out of nowhere, and Eli had to stop a giggle as she looked at Keaton. "She's so bossy," she teased, looking back at Lynn with a grin. It faltered as she saw the look on Lynn's face. Eli was going to ask her if there was something wrong, but her gaze moved onward to the crowd around them. Her own eyes returned to the other two girls. She smiled, deciding to continue their conversation. "Feel free to grab more jello shots or a drink. We definitely have plenty to go around."

Lynn's rambling brought Eli's attention back to her. How did she get on the topic of rolex-"Fish! Splish splash your ass over here." Eli had to laugh at that one, grinning and shaking her head. This was a different version of Lynn that Eli had never seen. It was bubbly and surprisingly friendly. What had put her in such a mood? It wasn't just the alcohol. Definitely not. She spotted the guy that Lynn was shouting at. He didn't look that happy to be here, but Eli gave him a smile and a wave anyways. He must not be too bad of a guy if Lynn was nice to him. She also wanted to know why Lynn called him "fish." Maybe he just needed friends to get into the party spirit.

"Jesus Lynn, how hard did you pregame? The party just started."

Eli laughed again, giving Amelia and Keaton a knowing grin. "I have to admit, if Keaton hadn't shown up when she did I would be at that level too." She shrugged with an amused look on her face. The two girls seemed rather wary of Lynn in this state, but Eli saw no indication that Lynn was a threat. Maybe if she was in a sour mood she would be, but for now she was like a little ball of energy.

"Hey."

Eli felt something warm touch her forearm. She looked down to see that it was Lynn's hand, and that when she moved it there was a smudge left in it's place. She lifted her arm closer to her face and gently blew the ash off of her arm. It hadn't hurt, but she had to wonder if the ash came from Lynn or from the heat against her skin. "Somebody with more, whatever, like, charm or shit should go tell tall dark and blandsome to come take a shot and start talking to people. All three of you qualify."

Eli pursed her lips, a confused expression on her face before she followed Lynn's gaze to the man at the edge of the light. She couldn't see him super well, but he stood like a security officer. He was too young to be a security officer. Maybe he was just nervous? He had a smile on his face. Like he was trying to look friendly. She glanced back at Amelia and Keaton, but their attention was on each other. Lynn was filling an aluminum foil covered cup with liquor. An amusing way to keep the cup from melting, Eli assumed. "Why the fuck did I bother with ice?" Eli giggled to herself.

It looked like no one else was going to invite the guy over, so Eli decided to take the initiative. She held her hands up to her mouth, as if it made her voice carry farther, but she quickly realized that she could just use her ability to do the same. He was well within her range, so she didn't think twice about it.

"Hey you! Want a shot?" She asked, waving the guy over with a smile. It might have startled him that it sounded like she was right next to him, but Eli hadn't meant to scare him. She'd gotten pretty used to using her ability to carry her voice across a room. It really helped during class presentations in secondary school. She smiled at Lynn as she returned, wondering why she never used her ability on a daily basis. Lynn didn't seem to mind hers being present 24/7, unless she just couldn't control it. She was pretty new to the space boat; each of her new friends were. Eli wasn't expecting them to have their abilities completely under control.

"My first drink was a bottle of whiskey when I was fourteen," she shared with the group after Amelia spoke. A smile lit up her face as she remembered that day. "A friend of a friend brought it to our dorm room and we all shared it. We were lightweights back then, so it really only took a few sips to feel anything. I almost wish we had started with beer instead."

"What about you, Keaton?" She asked, turning the attention away from herself as quickly as possible. That was also the first day she and Maddy met Zeke. She felt an ebb of anguish in her chest, but she quickly smothered it with another sip of her drink. Not tonight, satan. She thought to herself. Tonight was going great. She could even see Maddy making out with a guy in the corner of her vision. You go, girl! She smiled to herself before focusing on Keaton and waiting for her answer.

Eli hummed along to the current song, swaying to the rhythm. After the first heavily dosed cup of jungle juice, she was certainly feeling a strong buzz coming on. She felt at peace in front of the fire, and surrounded by good company. This is the way she liked to feel, but she had to admit to herself that it was mostly the alcohol influencing this feeling. It wouldn't last long, but for now Eli just wanted to enjoy it while she could.

Her friend nearby, Beck, had just reached the punchline of his joke when Eli's phone buzzed in her pocket. She laughed along with her friends, simultaneously pulling her phone out to see who had messaged her. To her delight, it was a text from Keaton.

'Lynn and I are headed over, and maybe a plus one. Don’t get wasted without us!'

Eli giggled as she read the last sentence. She pocketed her phone once more, figuring that she didn't need to respond. Keaton was smart enough to find her way. It was something Eli respected her for. They'd known each other for all of three days, but Eli felt like Keaton would be a reliable friend. She needed more friends like that. Sure, Maddy was her day one, her closest friend on The Promise. They'd known each other for years, but Eli didn't see her as often anymore. While Eli decided to take a break from classes, Maddy went straight into college courses. Their schedules were just too different now.

Immediately breaking away from that train of thought to avoid further depressing notes, Eli turned to Maddy and began to recall a time when the two had to walk all of the way from the campsite to Maddy's dorm. All because Eli forgot to bring the keycard to her apartment. The two laughed, Maddy turning to tell the rest of the group that Eli had to distract a security guard with an illusion so that they could make it past him. Eli cringed, regrettably recalling that she had seen the same officer at Panda Express a few days ago. "I really hope that guy is okay." She said to the group. She shook her head at the thought of that incident. The group laughed it off while Eli raised her cup to her lips with every intention to take a huge swig of jungle juice. Only to feel a tap on her shoulder.

"Boo, hey, nice place you got here." Eli turned to grin up at Keaton, lowering her cup. "So, where're the drinks?

"Hey! Welcome to our speakeasy." Eli joked as she moved from her log to stand. She held her arms up for balance and successfully stepped over the log to join Keaton on the other side. "Let me show you where they are and then I'll introduce you to everyone." She said with a wide smile. "I'm glad you came ou-"

"Sup, sluts."

Eli turned her head, taking a moment to soak in the sight of Lynn standing before them. She almost wanted to say "Sup, bitch?" back, but given how sensitive Lynn was, Eli wasn't sure. Lynn could either take it as a joke and laugh with it, or take it the wrong way and want to leave. So instead Eli chose to opt for, "It's about time you got here! Keaton and I were about to take shots." She gave Lynn a wide smile before waving them on. "Come on."

The party was slowly growing in size. She noticed a few more regularly dressed people, and a few that had already ditched the homecoming activities for something lowkey and hidden. Were they going to have enough alcohol? Eli, who was already at the drink table at this point, turned back to make sure that Keaton and Lynn had followed her through the crowd. It was then that she noticed another girl had approached the two while Eli walked off. Was it the plus one Keaton had mentioned? With a shrug, Eli grabbed four jello shots for each of them. "Thank you, Beck!" She murmured to herself before turning to head back to the group.

Elara had to resist pressing her lips together as she listened to Psylocke speak. It was hard for her to believe that the rogue team were always such troublemakers. From what she'd read about Harrison Snow, he was generally a good man. His death, and this disappearance of one of their teammates, was surely the cause of this. She was glad Psylocke informed her of their teammate's death. It would make reasoning with the group a lot easier. They were probably just pissed that their friend died and the company tried to hide it.

With a nod, Elara acknowledged what Psylocke said. "It makes sense." She turned to look down the hallway. It was empty, and unnaturally silent. No night security shift? Were they all handling the rogue members somewhere? "Let's go find out why they're really here."

Elara moved onwards, walking at a casual pace until she reached a line of doors. Her pace slowed, and she paused outside of each door to listen for any signs of life before she moved past it. She wasn't going to just open every door and peek inside. Although she was a little curious about this building, she wasn't here to snoop around. She'd see enough just looking for this group.

At the fourth door to the left, Elara heard signs of movement inside. She looked to her companion and nodded her head to the door. Psylocke moved to the other side of it, and Elara waited for her signal to enter. After a nod of approval, Elara cautiously opened the door.

Yeesh, did She-Ra splice herself with an octopus? Elara thought, taken aback by the sight of a woman with multiple arms. Elara would have immediately gone into an offensive stance upon seeing the multiple swords in her hands, but the woman wasn't acting aggressive. In fact, she seemed bored out of her mind. As if she was waiting for something.

So, Elara just entered the room, her hands raised to prove that she wasn't there to fight. "Sorry to just walk in on you, but I'm looking for some colleagues. My name is Vertigo, and this is my partner Psylocke; we work for Serval Industries." She even offered the woman a polite smile, slowly lowering her hands. "We have reason to believe that the group we're looking for is in this building. Do you work here?" If at any chance the woman were to attack, Elara was ready to defend herself and Psylocke. If they weren't attacked, maybe this woman could give her some information about this building, and why the team may have come here.
