Kalliope couldn't help but notice the captain studying her with a discerning gaze. Was he suspicious of her? Did he question why she knew his language? Would he ask? Kalliope had not used the language in a few years and knew she was rusty, but she hoped she could pick it up quickly. This would be a good test.

As the captain corrected himself from calling her a girl, Kalliope let out a small giggle. "I'm hardly a lady, that's for sure. A woman? Yes, I have been considered a woman for quite some time now," she said with a smirk, looking up from her nails to observe him reprimanding his crew for their lack of observation. Kalliope's respect for him grew as she watched him care for his crew. Any other captain would have lashed them immediately, but not him.

The captain's attention returned to her, but Kalliope waved off his apology. "No need to apology," she said, unsure if that was the right word to use. She furrowed her brow in irritation but pressed on. "I'm impressed with how you handle your men. Much better than many I've seen. Though I feel I must apologize." Finally, the word came to her. "I did not intend to get them in trouble. It merely became a game when I was able to get on board," she said with an apologetic smile.

"Damn...and here I was hoping you'd forgotten you'd asked who I was," Kalliope said with another giggle, pushing off the railing to stand up straight. "Kalliope Arden, at your service," she said with a theatrical bow and charming grin. "Would the fine captain of this lovely vessel still be willing to show me around? And perhaps he'd also grace me with his name, since I know more of his crew's names at this point?"

As the crew surrounded Kalliope with their weapons drawn, she couldn't help but stifle a laugh at their panicked reaction. She had been wandering around the ship undetected for some time and found their sudden vigilance amusing. Despite her amusement, she knew that any sudden moves on her part could provoke them further, so she kept her hands raised in a show of surrender.

"My, so many men eager to show me their weapons so soon? You all could at least buy me dinner first," she quipped, though she wasn't sure how many of them understood her language. Her joke would likely be lost on many of them.

As a man stepped forward, Kalliope surmised that he must be the captain. She watched the scene unfold with an amused grin, noting that he spoke a language that was likely unfamiliar to many of Caesonia. She also observed that while the crew seemed to relax at some orders and go back to their duties, they still kept their weapons trained on her. In Kalliope's mind, this was the first smart thing they had done since she had walked onto the ship.

Kalliope found it curious that the captain seemed relaxed with her presence on his ship. She wondered if he was merely overconfident in his abilities or if he was playing some other game. Nonetheless, she noted that he kept his distance, which showed that he wasn't completely overconfident. This caused Kalliope to gain a bit of respect for him.

As the captain looked her up and down, Kalliope wondered if he was sizing her up or captivated by her appearance. She knew that many considered her a sight to behold with her red hair and tanned skin, but her scars often scared men off. She had even been called a "beautiful tragedy" by a certain king. Although she had convinced herself that she had accepted her scars, Kalliope couldn't help but wonder if it was a lie. Nonetheless, she was adept at lying and kept her emotions hidden.

“You, strange lady. Who are you? Why do you come here? To our Sada Kurau?”

Kalliope blinked at the captain's question and stared at him for a moment before letting out a chuckle. "Strange lady? And here I thought I was merely just one girl," she replied, using the same language he had spoken earlier. She leaned against the ship's railing, beginning to pick at her nails as a playful smirk danced across her lips. "Worry not, Captain. I merely let curiosity get the better of me and decided to have a little fun. I've just returned from a trip outside of Eromora and on my way back home, I spied your beautiful vessel here. So I decided to admire your beautiful Sada Kurau. I meant no offense, I assure you." With her bit of fun over and done with, Kalliope's smile became a bit friendlier. There was no sense in making an enemy of the captain if she hadn't already.

Kalliope stepped off the gangway and breathed in the salty air of Caesonia's bustling port. It was evening, and the sun had just begun to dip below the horizon, casting a warm orange glow across the sky. The past two weeks had been rough for her. She had been sent on a job that required her to travel by ship and spent the last two weeks heading back on said ship, which wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for her bunkmate. The woman had talked nonstop the entire journey, leaving Kalliope with no reprieve from the constant chatter. For a brief moment, she’d even considered using her skills to rid herself of the woman, but trying to be rid of a body on a ship when there were many eyes to get past sounded more like a headache than it was worth. So now she had a buzzing headache that she desperately wished to get rid of and a hot bath with a good book sounded like the perfect cure.

As she made her way through the busy streets of the docks, Kalliope couldn't help but feel relieved to be back on solid ground. While she didn’t mind traveling by ship, even enjoyed it sometimes, this time the constant swaying of the ship had made her queasy, and the noise of the waves crashing against the hull had kept her up at night. Or maybe it was just the snoring of her bunkmate. Gods above, she truly despised that woman now. She was looking forward to a good night's sleep in her own bed. Of course King Edin would like a debriefing on her mission, but that could wait until the morning. She truly didn’t know if she could deal with his idiocy tonight.

As she walked, something caught her eye - a ship she didn't recognize. It was foreign yet familiar, and she couldn't resist the urge to investigate. Glancing at the name, the Sada Kurau, memories of a gruff old foreigner she'd befriended in the pit mine came flooding back. He had paid dearly for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but she had found him endearing nonetheless. Maybe it was the fond memories of this man that drew her to the ship, or maybe it was simply her curiosity getting the better of her. She looked around, checking for any alert eyes, before silently slipping up the gangplank. She knew she shouldn't be snooping, but she found she couldn't resist. She wanted to find out more about these people and where they came from.

Leo & Thea

Thea had begun slowly making her way down the street after leaving Charlotte’s house. She needed to meet up with Leo, but she found she wasn’t really rushing at all as she was nervous about what she needed to talk to him about. While talking to Charlotte and even John had helped her in feeling a bit better, the dread of the morning’s events was washing over her once again. How would her brother react to the news about her now ex-fiance? How was her mother going to react? Anxiety had her trembling like a leaf and then there were the gunshots. Panic set in as she glanced around, unsure of where the sound came from. Was she in danger? Perhaps her mother had a point that she shouldn’t explore the city without a guard.

At first she simply began walking faster, but it quickly turned into a run as she did her best to fight back tears. Before she knew it, she was in the park and was forced to slow down due to the festival. She had a few people try and stop her to ask her if she was okay, but she barely heard them as she felt the world spinning some. Her head was pounding and she needed a drink desperately. Perhaps then she could calm down some. Finally she stumbled across a stand selling some mead. She made her way through the line and eventually bought herself a glass. She downed it right then and there before ordering another and walking away with it. Slowly she felt herself calming some and her mind cleared a little. The horse race…yes, wasn’t there a horse race today? Surely Leo wouldn’t miss that. With a deep breath, Thea began making her way to the racetrack.

It took her a little while to sift through the crowd, asking some familiar faces if they’d seen her brother yet. She’d managed to finish her second glass of mead now and finally found someone to point her in the direction they’d last seen her brother. She found him sitting down and she felt emotions wash over her once again, but did her best to keep her composure. She approached him, forcing a smile on her face as she took a seat next to him. ”May I join you, dearest brother?” She asked, unable to keep a quiver from her voice.

“Thea!” Leo immediately stood up and spoke her name with exaggerated enthusiasm to show her presence was always a welcomed one. “Just in time for the race.” He offered his brightest smile. He had noted the fragile shake of his sister’s voice when she’d spoken. Was it a bad day or just another difficult one? Either way, his job was now to improve Thea’s day however he could. So Leo put an arm around Thea’s shoulders and used the other arm to gesture toward the horses.

“Now I’ve placed a large bet on that horse right there, Lady Avarice, a steed named after greed absolutely has to have her sights set on gold. Except Duke Vikena has renamed the horses, so now I’m wondering if the horse now known as Queen Tulip the Bitch-Slayer has a chance of defeating Sir Ominous Dominus Black. Certainly, with a name like Sir Ominous Dominus Black that stallion will be looking to dominate this race. Quite the predicament. Will I leave here slightly richer than before? Or will I be enduring a painful lecture from our mother later all about poor horse choosing?” Leo whispered the information as if it were a closely guarded secret, and once he was done, he pulled his arm away from Thea, grinned, and shrugged.

In reality, he had picked the horse and rider he’d never heard of, considering the unknown a riskier, and thus more rewarding if correct, bet. But the point was not to discuss betting strategy, only to distract Thea with something ridiculous, non-troubling, and fun. “Have you placed a bet?”

Leo seemed to always know the best way to calm her nerves and make things fun, something Thea truly admired and often tried to do for him as well. She’d relaxed some as he’d put his arm around her and couldn’t help but giggle as he told her of all she’d missed so far. Surely their mother would be quite frustrated with him if he lost whatever money he bet. She wouldn’t even be surprised if she’d be mad that he bet anything at all, likely finding gambling to be a distasteful thing. All the more reason for Leo to do so and Thea to support him.

”My, it sounds like I’ve missed a bit! Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to place a bet, though I have a feeling I would have bet on the same horse as you. How could you pass up that opportunity with such a divine name?!” She said, a happier tone coming easier to her voice for now. She still knew she had matters to discuss with him, but for now there was no harm in both of them enjoying themselves. ”Even with the name change, I think your bet was a wise one. Sir Ominous Dominus may sound daunting and strong, but I personally think it sounds like he’s compensating for something, wouldn’t you agree? Perhaps he’s a little bitch.” She reasoned with a bit of a smirk, confidence exuding from her now. ”I think our lovely Queen Tulip the Bitch-Slayer will easily take Sir Ominous Dominus the Little Bitch down.”

Leo nodded along, listening with the same focus he used for only the most important discussions. A world in which their highest concern was merely the outcome of a horse race was a much better place to live in even if it was a facade fated to last only for a short while. “A bold claim but very sound logic. Ol’ Ominous Dominious out there just doesn’t seem to have half the vibrancy the Bitch-Slayer’s got.” Leo agreed. That much was true, even from a distance it was clear that from coat to saddle the horse now known as Queen Tulip the Bitch-Slayer received only the best care and attention, and the noble mare held a confident look that said she was more than ready to leave the competition in the dust. It was a sound bet.

“I think you showed up just in time to save me from torturous seconds of second-guessing, a sure sign my luck has finally turned around.” Leo added.

"I'm always happy to be your good luck charm." Thea said with a giggle and a nod as she glanced out at the competition, but slowly her face fell as her mind drifted to other matters once again. She fidgeted in her seat a little as she debated on speaking or not. How could she rob him of joy at this moment? Perhaps she'd wait until after the race. Or was it better to rip it off like a bandage? She wanted to scream at herself for being so indecisive. "Leo I…" She began and felt a wave of illness overtake her, but she pressed on. "I have news to tell you, but I fear you may be upset." She said in little more than a whisper.

“Life is full of upsetting news, but I try not to make a habit of shooting the messenger. Whatever you have to tell me, I can almost guarantee it won’t be the worse news I’ve gotten in the last year.” Leo would bet money on that statement too. Whatever her news was; it wasn’t pressing enough that she had led with it, and it wasn’t sensitive enough that it needed to be told in secret. So it would be manageable, but since Thea seemed anxious about whatever she needed to say, the horse race was quickly pushed out of his mind as he gave her his full attention.

Thea couldn't help but wince a little at his last words, knowing that was likely the truth. Still, she wasn't fond of adding to any stress her brother already had. She took a deep breath, exhaling slowly before she finally opened her mouth to speak. "Felix broke off the engagement." She glanced at him briefly, hoping to gauge his reaction to the news. "I made a mistake and went to his room drunk last night. I suppose my state resulted in me acting shamefully and I've scared him off. I always scare people off…" She began rambling, now looking away from her brother.

“Well, Felix has a stupid weasel face and is less interesting than a loaf of stale bread.” Leo spoke calmly, as if these were well-known facts, once Thea had paused. It was probably poor taste to speak of the prince like that, but that thought was much less important than the fact that Thea was hurting. He put an arm back around Thea’s shoulders. Even if she didn’t want to look at him, she would know he wasn’t going anywhere.

“Thea, anyone who is afraid because you have emotions, is not worth your time.
And you did not look happy around him last night, no marriage would ever be worth your happiness. You are worth more than that.”
Leo offered this opinion in a soft and somber tone. There was the ‘pop’ of the starting gun, the sound of hooves against the track, and Lorenzo’s commentary filling the air but it no longer mattered. A small win would not fix his sister’s broken heart, and there wasn’t much Leo could do about it either. “You go ahead and be as scary as you need to be, I’ll be right here.”

The warmth of comfort spread over Thea and her brother’s words reached her ears, quelling her fears and worries for the time being. She leaned into him, laying her head on his shoulder as she let out a small sigh, watching the horses take off. A rogue tear slipped down her cheek, but there was a soft smile on her face. ”How did I end up with the most wonderful brother ever? Thank you, Leo.” She said softly. After a few moments of silence and quite the interesting power struggle, the Bitch Slayer seemed to pull ahead and Thea sat up. ”Oh Leo, look! Oh how exciting!” She said, now with more enthusiasm as it seemed the horse Leo bet on was going to win.

“Of course. You will always get my best Thea.” Leo smiled, not a bit of it forced or faked; if he was going to do something right, at least let him be a good brother. The crowd picked up, excitement rumbled through the air. Surprise interference by a wayward bird even threw a bit of chaos onto the track. It was a close race but Queen Tulip the Bitch Slayer pulled through in the end. Leo clapped for the victor, mirrored the crowd's enthusiasm, and it was enough to just watch a horse race with his sister.

“Very, exciting. Good to see Sorian can still put on a proper horse race. Want to split the winnings? Since you brought all the good luck?” Leo offered.

Thea giggled, but shook her head as she smiled at him. "No, no. You won it fair and square Leo. Besides, if Mother found out you gave me money she might get upset thinking I'll use it to feed my addiction. Which, honestly, I might." She said somewhat jokingly with a shrug. "Thank you for helping relieve my anxieties and being the best brother, Leo. I think I might go back to my room and take a nap now." She said before throwing her arms around him in a hug. A few minutes later Thea was heading back to the guest house.
Munir & Mina
Part One

Interactions: @Conscripts Dr. Williamson

Munir, having brought the beaver back from his hunt, handed the dead creature to the royal clothier, leaving him with an order of “Please, use this pelt to create a pair of gloves fit for winters in Kolonivka. The glove should be elegant, but durable, fit for a royal lady. For the cost of any additional material and labor, my retainer Hazim can see to it you’re provided for. Hazim?” Munir gestured to a quiet man standing next to him and the man sprang into action, making contact and conversing with the clothier. “Hazim, spare no expense. Come to my quarters with a report after you are finished. I would like to catch up on events that took place while I was gone on the hunt.” With that, Munir gave the quiet man and the clothier a nod and briskly walked off.

While making his way back to his quarters, another of his retainers filled him in on the day’s events that he missed. When the man got to the point of the execution, Munir was rather aloof and seemingly uninterested. Public executions, while rare, took place in Alidasht and Munir has attended them since he was a young child. But, as soon as Mina’s name came up, Munir perked up and started paying attention. When the man mentioned that Mina was taken to the infirmary, more than likely due to a heat stroke, Munir put up a hand to gesture for the man to stop speaking, “Take me to her, at once.” A simple, yet direct command from Munir was all that was said for the next several minutes while the pair made their way to the infirmary.

Upon arrival, Munir gave the same hand gesture as before for the pair to slow down and quiet down. “Wait here.” Munir said as he gently reached for the doorhand, pulling the door open as gently as he possibly could have. Having made very minimal noise up until this point, Munir peered in through the door that is now slightly ajar, and saw that good Dr. John placed a kiss on Mina’s forehead. Munir remembered some words being exchanged between John and Mina, but he did not remember the exact words. He then witnessed Mina placing a kiss on the doctor’s cheek. Munir pondered for a moment, surely this is some sort of odd Northern tradition, to kiss your doctor in such a way…

Right?

Munir cleared his throat to announce his arrival. “Lady Blackwood. I heard of your medical emergency and I made my way here with haste. I hope everything is better? Dr. Williamson, is there anything you should require to provide the lady the best care in your abilities?” Munir said, working to stay calm and treat the scene in front of him as merely a professional one, and nothing more.

A professional kiss on the forehead returned with a professional kiss on the cheek…

Mina’s eyes shifted from John’s to fall on Munir now, a confused smile spreading across her face. She hadn’t been expecting to see him here, but it certainly wasn’t an unwelcome surprise. ”Munir! What a surprise to see you here. I’m quite alright, I assure you. Dr. Williamson is quite skilled at his craft.” She said happily as she turned her attention back to the doctor and her friend.

”Thank you John for coming to my rescue. I think I’ll take this to my room now and take it easy for the rest of the day. I’ll be sure to stay out of the heat as much as possible as well.” She said as she took the things he gave her and began getting up. She then slid the box with her uncle's blood sample over to him before continuing. ”I’ll leave this with you to examine. I might also suggest adding a drop of a similar substance after examining it initially and then watching it. I assure you that you’ll find something very intriguing.” She said, being careful not to state exactly what was in the box yet knowing John would understand what she meant. She then turned her attention back to Munir and walked towards him, forgetting about the state of undress Mina was currently in.

”Would you be so kind as to walk me back to my room?” She asked as she gave him a small bow.

John? His name should only and ever be Dr. Williamson. Munir merely observed Mina as she said some words to seemingly calm him. He noticed that she slid a box over to him. Surely that was a professional gesture as well, nothing more. With his mind clouded by the brief scene in front of him, Munir had not noticed the state of Mina’s undress either. “Uh. Sure. I would be glad to.” Munir replied quickly, unclasping the light shroud he wore to his hunt and draping it over Mina’s shoulders. He turned to one of his retainers, and said softly “Bring buckets of ice, iced water, iced mead and a plate of soft stone fruits to Lady Blackwood’s quarters.” The other young man nodded once and shuffled off.

Munir offered Mina his arm, turning his attention briefly to John. “Dr. Williamson, I very much appreciate the things you’ve done for Lady Blackwood. I’m in your debt.” Offering a small nod, Munir pushed the door further open with his free arm and began supporting Mina back to her room.
