It is certainly not 'optimal', but it *is* doable, depending on what you want to do with it. You could go swords or valor bard and play them more like a warrior with some magical ability

Plot and Premise:

Hello everyone! Welcome to the interest check for Falling Skies! This is a reboot of a particularly old series- the original being written about 6 years ago, and the last iteration being about 3 years ago. This Space-Opera-with-mechs RP follows the adventures of a group of men and women from the Empire's 101st Legion. I will be accepting a relatively small number of players- thinking between 3 and 5 including any co-gms, so this is not first come first served. This is a Mech RP, reminiscent of Gundam, Robotech, Front Mission and Super Robot Wars.

While nothing about giant mechs really fit the premise of 'hard sci fi', this RP will be aiming to fit something along the lines of 'hardish' sci fi- grounded in reality where possible, with some rule bending of realism where needed. Something sorta like classic Halo in terms of gritty military fiction vs space fantasy.

We the players will play the role of the 7th MAS (Mobile Armor Suit) Squadron, a unit from the United Earth Empire's 101st Mobile Armor Legion, as they return to friendly space from a long and grueling campaign and prepare to go home. Par for the course, absolutely everything goes wrong and they find themselves struggling for survival in increasingly hostile space. This RP aims to blend the melodrama of a space opera with the cold and harsh realities of war, and of course with giant robots.

Terminology and Technology:

Mobile Armor Suit Builder:

Tech Room:

Character Sheets:

The following are the Character Skeletons for the the 7th MAS Squadron. The CS's are a 2 part set. The first part is your character, the pilot. The second part is your MAS, which you can make using the builder above or use one of the UEE MAS's from the Tech Room.

A note on Callsigns: A callsign is a name given to you by the rest of the squadron (whether you want it or not). There are very few people that will be willing to unironically call you "Archangel" or "Kingslayer". Nicknames and Callsigns should be short, sweet, easy to call out. Examples of common callsigns are in reference to habits people observe you doing or quick shortening of your names: IE "Brit" because you have a strong English accent, "Twitch" because you tend to look around a lot/rapidly, "Kanga" because your last name is Roo, etc. If you're a brand new pilot and haven't been around long enough- or haven't been notable enough- to have an established callsign, you won't have one- or in the case of the newbie: "Noob", "Rook", "Rookie", "FNG", etc.

Alrighty everybody, here's the link to the discord- I'll assign everybody to the correct role as they filter in

Alright! Good to get everyone's opinion. I'm finishing up some class stuff right now, but I'll get a Discord and new thread up sometime tonight, and then I'll likely try to redo my introduction post sometime tomorrow
@Stitches@Bazmund@Hawthorne very fair critiques, most RP's usually start with a sort of closed start, and I thought changing it up might make things more enjoyable- I wanted to avoid the sort of 'everyone meets in a tavern' kinda vibe, but I can also see why leaving it completely open can stall things. Bazmund's point about unfamiliar groups in an unfamiliar setting is also fair, the last iteration of this was made up of mostly of returning players and people I had plenty of contact with- I forget that other people aren't as familiar with my brainchild as I am. Its also been quite a bit of time since I've run an RP of my own, so I thought I'd try mixing things up a bit, live and learn I suppose.

My plan for a soft restart was to just migrate everyone over to a new thread for a sort of fresher feeling- more of a mental restart for myself than anything. It would also give me the chance to change up my opening post as well, I think the idea of starting in the orientation would be more cohesive as well. Not going to request people to change up their character sheets or anything- those all looked great, just a clean slate move to a new thread. Though, as Stitches said, I could just sort of timeskip us an hour or so forward into the orientation- it just might feel a little jarring.

Ah, another topic that I sort of dread to bring up- how do people feel about discord? I have pretty mixed feelings towards it- at first I thought it was a good idea, but I know it can get annoying because nearly every thread has them now. It also effectively makes the OOC obsolete, which I'm also not a fan of. That being said, I've never been the quickest at communicating on the Guild, and discord would make at least answering questions/making clarifications faster.

Bullet points:
Soft Restart - Yay or Nay
Discord - Yah or Nah
Hey everybody, its been a bit quiet so I thought I'd ask this now before we continue moving on:

Are people still interested in this RP? I know we've sorta had a lot of stopping and starting prior to getting off the ground, so the momentum might've stalled. People's interests change, inspiration/motivation dies, its all typical Guild stuff. Part of me thinks a whole ass restart might be needed to get the steam flowing again. Anyway yeah, just thought I'd get everyone's general feel.
Good to see the extra interest! My intention is to keep the party rather small, but I can always make exceptions for quality. Though I hate to rush people, I'll start getting us moving around the weekend, hopefully that gives people time for a few more intro posts!
Ramiel Wyndham

The march through the city was an eerie, somber experience. The distortions of the city and the 'other realm' so to speak showed what were likely different sides of the same coin as they marched through the abandoned streets of one of the most technologically advanced and largest cities on the continent. The experience would've likely been a lot more amazing and interesting a journey if the knowledge that they might have to fight the cities occupants didn't sour the experience.

As misfortune would have it, they did find civilians as their mission continued, an eclectic mix of what appeared to be commoners and nobles, appeared and began attacking them. An unorganized horde of men and noblemen seemingly spilled out of the woodwork to attack at them, along with a seemingly more organized group of armed 'people', still an eclectic mix of noble and common men, but with weapons marching in a semblance of a cohesive unit.

Ramiel pulled himself to the back of their squad, where his range would provide him with the most advantage, razor thin bolts of lightning streaking from his bow to pick off targets of opportunity wherever they made themselves apparent. He weaved his shots through the squad as they fought, his bolts connecting with the bodies of enemies that attempted to get around to the backs of his squadmates.

They fought for hours, though it felt longer to Ramiel. He had not necessarily gotten comfortable with the idea of fighting the former civilians of Gabaras, but he'd accepted it as a part of what they'd have to do to survive. Several of the others seemed to share his sentiments, as they collected their breath after the last crystal was put up. Though the calm wouldn't last for too long.

Something happened and their mage Maria fell over screaming, turning to react, Ramiel saw the distortions erupt and slowly but surely his squadmates began disappearing. Feeling a sense of helplessness set in, Ramiel looked for someway to escape his current predicament, but the thought barely had time to form before he too disappeared.

Heyo, how are things with everybody?
great posts so far! My last exam just finished so I can afford to be a lot more attentive now! If anyone is needing help to get into things drop me a message and I'll find a line for ya!
Yeah! I purposely left things kinda open so people could put themselves relatively wherever they wanted, though I suppose it could be sort of a double edged sword.

Let me know if you need any clarifications, but for the most part you're free to makeup whatever you want before the new crew orientation- I put Ingram and most of the squadron in the hangar as a sort of 'default' place to chill before the new pilots arrive.
