So, um, inspired by earlier but hopefully avoiding the 'nothin' but fighting' and inconsistent characterisation things...
Name: Houraisan Kaguya

Universe: Touhou Project

Personality: Polite and with an old-fashioned manner of speech, Kaguya tends to be rather... naive, as well as somewhat silly. All of the rabbits of Eientei are given the same name--and briefly looking up acid rain made her want to keep them all in side one night in case it burned off their hair. She's also been trapped by bamboo growing surprisingly quickly. Whilst Mokou tends to take their feud deadly seriously, to Kaguya it's more like a game, and she doesn't even bear Mokou all that much enmity--most likely because she's the closest thing to a friend rather than a retainer, though Eirin's been warming up over time.
She likes showing off her treasures.

Powers/Skills: Exactly like Mokou, Kaguya cannot truly be killed, and she'll simply shrug off the damage--though aside from that, her personal abilities (except for flight) see very little use. She has 'control of eternity and the instantaneous'--with the practical effect being that she can stop the passage of time from changing an area, or an item, or she can undo effects that similarly mess with the flow of time--in this way, even though centuries passed in Eientei, no food would rot and nobody that lived there would age. Her only other noteworthy personal ability is that she's far, far stronger than she looks: Kaguya can lift up an entire temple ceiling with her bare hands. The only question is how.
The most likely answer is that, despite being a princess, she knows magic of some description... especially because the Lunarians are supposed to have invented magic in the first place. Still, with Kaguya being Kaguya, this is... less than threatening. 'Anaemic magical bullets' are about all you need to worry about.
It could also be considered a skill of sorts that she's so beautiful her time in public lead to every noble wanting to marry her, despite the fact that her adoptive parents were common peasantry.

Brief Bio: Born as royalty upon the moon, Kaguya was exiled for getting Eirin to make the Hourai Elixir. Exile, rather than execution, because it was rather impossible to kill someone who is immortal. She was found by a bamboo cutter and raised, again, until such point that every high-born noble came to try and win her hand. Rather than simply reject them, she set impossible tasks--impossible, because the items were already in her possession.
When Lunar emissaries were sent to tell Kaguya she could come home, she decided that it was better, in fact, to stay on Earth, and since Eirin was amongst them they went off to live in a bamboo forest, with rabbits. Kaguya has basically stayed in the house and its immediate environment since then, having left the forest basically once.
It's doubtful whether she's actually left home unaccompanied at any point in her life. She's rather sheltered.

Equipment: As a collector of strange and unique artefacts, Kaguya tends to have a lot of odd things lying around--but not, in this case, on her person. She still nevertheless has her five Impossible Requests: the swallow cowrie's shell, the fire rat's robe, the buddha's bowl, the Jewelled Branch of Hourai (which is only impossible because the tree grows on the moon), and the dragon's jewel. About the only useful abilities these have except as a focus for pretty danmaku patterns is that the robe is fireproof.
She also has an umbrella with her.

Other: Not, exactly, the biggest threat. Though she can probably kill a person with her bare hands.

From what I've read, it depends. From the OP:
"Customizable characters from video games are okay as long as they have some sort of canon personality and are not just heroic mimes. Mass Effect Shepard and Persona Protagonists work out in this regard while characters who solely exist just for gameplay do not."
In other words, a completely nameless and personalityless Player Avatar is not okay, but, say, Master Chief is.

And would that also extend to named but voiceless characters like Gordon Freeman? Or how about named and voiced characters but who lack a fixed story like Shepard (yeah, he still fights the Reapers and went through the main events, but everything else like how those fights ended is up to the player)?

Well, not quite. Narukami wriggled out of harms way, with Makoto soon to get out too. So two protags could possibly be applicable.

*Name: Ghave, Guru of Spores (I beleive it's pronounced "Gha-vey", but I might be mistaken)

*Universe: Magic the Gathering

*Appearance:

*Personality: Ghave is a very calm individual under most circumstances. Before the war between his kind and humans he would mend the wounds of anyone who showed up to his home, but watching his bretheren die at the hands of humans has made him somewhat wary of mammal-kind. It is unknown how old he is or even if he is even male since Mycoids don't have a concept of gender. He sometimes has difficulty relating to other species due to his unique nature of a plant construct, but he makes an effort to empathize with others as he believes that is the role of a shaman.

*Powers/Skills: As a Shaman Ghave is gifted in healing and magic that pertains to life... and death. His main strength lies in being able to absorb and otherwise manipulate organic matter. He can absorb food and dead matter in order to bolster his own strength and vitality, but he can also shed excess pounds in order to create saprolings, the youngest and most basic form of Mycoloid, as servants and helpers. Saprolings on their own are very weak, but often are made in large numbers. His mystical influence over plant life allows him to manipulate and shape his mycoloid brothers with ease.

Ghave's other abilities fit mainly in the supportive role. He can quickly regenerate his own body as long as he has access to the available nutrients. He can also use his regenerative abilities on other life forms at a similar expense of food, but thankfully the definition of food to a fungus is very loose. He can also grant his own life force to allies to bolster their strength and energy, but the same limitations apply.

As a Shaman Ghave also naturally sensitive to the spiritual. Generally this means sensing the presence of ghosts and spirits and communicating with them.

*Brief Bio: Ghave is a member of a race known as Mycoloids, an intelligent fungus species that inhabits the plane of Dominia. This race existed peacefully in the fungal forests of the land of Drakkus. However, the humans of that plane were facing hard times, and they turned to Ghave's home in order to find sustenance. And find sustenance they did. The humans began consuming younger Mycoloids in what their race described as genocide. This prompted a counter attack from the forest dwellers, but the humans had access to steel and fire magics in order to repel their assault. It wasn't until Ghave entered the fight that things turned in the Mycoloid's favor. Using his abilities to bend life itself he turned his fungal brothers into an ever evolving force that eventually were able to drive the humans out of their forests to free their home once again.

Shortly after the battle as Ghave's kind celebrated their victory was when whatever strange magical force pulled him out of his home universe. He is lonesome of his kind back home and would appreciate being back home with them, but Ghave believes it may be possible to start a whole new colony of Mycoloid on this new world if he finds the suitable place for it. An advantage of reproducing via spores I suppose.

*Equipment: A simple staff that behaves as a conduit for his magical abilities. While it can be used rather easily as a bludgeoning weapon, generally it doesn't stack up well against more traditional weaponry.

*Others: Some of the details of Ghave are not strictly canon, such as his personality, simply because there isn't much to go off of. His background is completely canon, but there isn't anything else about his character I could find. I based his powers off of his card's abilities, and also off of what a lot of creature cards of his color combination are capable of doing. His personality is pretty much made up as well. I really like Ghave's design, his background and the abilities of the card itself so I made an effort to fill in the gaps myself.

This is his card for those who want to take a look: Ghave, Guru of Spores

@Watermelon: I'm sorry to say this, but could you choose someone else? As it is, he's just a heroic mime with a set of abilities due to ambiguousness. Sorry. ^^.

@Salmon: Looking through Dooplis' stuff on other sources, I'm going to have to veto him.

Don't have time to type up full character sheets at the moment, but I'd like to reserve both Fawful from the Mario & Luigi RPG series and Wreck-Gar from Transformers Animated.

Too bad Doopliss won't work out, might have been interesting having two characters from the same world.

Edit: holy crap the default avatar is hideous

Well the default avatars are randomly generated unicorns and each member has a unique one.

I remember back when this site was first getting running and no one could upload their own avatars yet, so we all had unicorns. Some of them were hilariously bizarre to look at. ...Good times. Good times. XD

@Screw: Spots reserved for you. Glad to have you aboard, my man.
And now for my second character.

*Name: Ranma Saotome
*Universe: Ranma 1/2
*Appearance: "I'm the best."

*Personality: Under normal circumstances, Ranma is fairly carefree and generally friendly to those around him. However, he also lacks experience in social situations and frequently speaks and acts without considering the consequences, or the feelings of others- leading to severe bluntness and the patented "foot in the mouth disease". He has no small amount of pride in his skills and will easily get angered by those who call him out on it or "annoying" people.

*Powers/Skills: Ranma is a master of several martial arts schools of Japanese and Chinese origin, his specialty being midair combat via the Saotome Branch of the Indiscriminate Grappling School. He is also considered superhuman as he can punch and kick several hundred times in only a few seconds, survive blows that would outright cripple or kill normal people, jump fifty feet into the air, and lob around heavy objects such as boulders and concrete rollers with abandon. Ranma also has an extremely fast learning curve, able to dissect and come up with counters to techniques after seeing them only a few times as well as liberally use clever on the fly tactics to outsmart opponents with a superior quality and a master of using any ordinary object as aides in combat such as but not limited to chopsticks, pencils, basketball hoops, his own hair, boulders, trees, pantyhose, ceremonial tea sets, forks and knives, kettles, and scarves. As of this point in the timeline, he can shoot balls/beams of ki that depends on emotions as well as several variants of a twister.

*Brief Bio: Ranma Saotome was raised to be a man amongst men by his father, a rather amoral thief and coward. After enduring a dozen years of outright insane training, he now resides in the house of his father's friend, Soun Tendo and engaged to his youngest daughter, Akane Tendo. After surviving a lifetime's worth full of jealous rivals, pushy fiancees, manipulative schemers, and magical princes/various supernatural entities of the week, Ranma was whisked to the City.

*Equipment: Anything and everything he can get his hands on.
*Others: He has a phobia towards cats. Also changes gender depending on the temperature of water with anything warm/hot for male and cool/cold for female.
