Well, it doesn't have to be a huge thing. Just perhaps have it as a subplot about the increasing concern of muggles about the magical world and how they are adapting to finding out magic is real and maybe use it as drama with some muggle parents unsure about whether they should let their child go to the school. And maybe have an anti-magic goup but not have them be a huge threat.

Names: Astrid and Terra Reese

Magical Heritage: Muggle raised (but their mom was a witch)
Appearance:
Backstory/Personality: Astrid and Terra are identical twins, but do have fairly different personalities. Astrid is determined and willful, a Gryffindor through and through. Terra isn't as headstrong as her sister, and is shy. She prefers the back row of the class and a good fanciful book. Their mother disappeared when they were three and since they found out about Hogwarts, they started to wonder if their mom was of witch heritage. Their father, already disturbed from an incident in his youth and his wife's disappearance has barely spoken a word to the girls since they got their letter.
Wand: Astrid's wand: Ash, Dragon heartstring, stiff, 10 inches
Terra's wand: Willow, phoenix feather, wispy, 9 3/4 inches

Special Gifts and Abilities: If they are within a mile of each other they can sense each others feelings, and location. Terra is great with plants and had already been thinking of becoming a botanist before coming to Hogwarts.

... If the conflict is protest as opposed to action, I'm in. That sounds great.

I have a question: how long will this story be set after Voldemort's defeat? How many years? My character is a third year so I would like to know whether she would have been at the school during the chaos of the final battle, or whether any of the characters who aren't first years would have been there at the time. I just realised this and if it wasn't that long ago, I might have to edit my backstory.

The epilogue in the seventh book is set 19 years after the events of the last chapters. Maybe this can take place 20 years after? That way we'll have Harry Potter descendants running around maybe making cameos?

While that seems like a plausible idea, why would the anti-magic protests or whatever be starting twenty years after the fact? Or have they been going on for twenty years?

I think around 20 years later sounds fine. It will make it easy to write for the history of the names, and you will have your "celebrity students" make cameos.

I figure the protests have been gearing up for years, and are just now getting pretty nasty. Maybe some incidences like what happened to Dumbledores sister could have happened recently to really make the magical world aware of the anger and outrage.

Oki dokes. I'm actually rather glad about that. When I remembered that fact in my head, I was sad because I didn't really want to add anything about the final battle or Voldemort's attack on the world and how it effected my character into Rhea's backstory.

And yeah, that makes sense.

Personality: Richie's a nervous kid. He's as awkward as you'd imagine most eleven year old boys are and he's doing what he can to try and fit in. His family is originally from France, but his grandparents moved to England before his parents were born. He doesn't from money, but his family isn't poor; they get by reasonably well on his father's wages as a court clerk for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

He's got a couple of younger siblings, and his passions include watching/playing quidditch around his village whenever he gets the chance and spending time with his mates. He's not a genius, but he does well in school.

Assets: 10 inch Oak wand with a dragon heart string core.

Special Gifts and Abilities:

Decent flyer, determined, and passable French he learned from his dad/grandparents (determined not to go full English).

I think that depends on how in depth we want to get with actual class curriculum.
