Well part of history is not knowing exact dates of certain events that are so far back to not be recorded. A time keeping system I think should be more IC than OOC. Races that engage in regular interaction such as trade adopt similar time keeping systems to better coordinate trade, something like that happening. Look forward to IC in future that could involve various races that develop historians trying to align events in timelines.

That's a very interesting part of things, I do agree. But since the system is OOC, the races wouldn't know about it anyway, and they'd have to figure out their history all the same. It would just be for our reference. Since the events right now are unfolding in a period before writing, which is bound to become somewhat mythological, we could play on that and have them create false chronologies, just like in real life.

Anyway, I should get to posting. --'

Edit: How many moons are there orbiting the planet?

Speaking of moons, I was thinking recently about a "global event" (for the southern regions, at least). How often would an eclipse happen? Has one already happen (I didn't notice any when reading through old IC posts)? How big is the actual world compared to this continent, for reference of how many of us would see said eclipse? Do "global events" even happen at all, or is this wishful thinking?

On that question, would there be any climate change as the years go on, like a new ice age?

I suppose there's only one moon then?

I think global events, if agreed upon by everyone, could definitely occur. They'd certainly spice up things.
Eclipses repeat in a region every few decades, I think.
I'd surmise the current map isn't much bigger than North America, so a solar eclipse would probably be at least somewhat visible over a large part of it, although the total eclipse would only be seen in a much smaller section.

I guess we could discuss about climate change, such as ice ages, or smaller events like droughts, floods, etc. There's no reason we couldn't.

I don't think I can keep up with you guys anymore. I just haven't felt in the mood to sit down and write for a long while. I've been busy with other things, and I just don't feel creative enough. I think maybe I just need some time to refuel my brain. So, sorry guys, I'll have to drop this one and take a break from the guild for a while.

One large moon, with oceans and plant life, so it would be blue and green much like the Earth would seem from space. Except the land covers a significantly larger portion of the surface, say half and half.

Not sure about the eclipse, if you guys agree on it happening now or on a definite cycle we can include it. Same with any other global events, since this is after all a collaborative writing process. I like the idea myself. I have not seen any eclipses, and I've read all the IC up until the last page.

In terms of a mercator projection, which is how the actual whole map is, the current map is roughly one quarter of the world, the northeast corner. I do wish that there was a tool where you could convert a mercator projection map to an actual globe, but I have not found one. This continent is essentially a parallel to Europe-Asia-Africa, so think the distance between the tip of the western peninsula and the mouth of the desert river is roughly equivalent to the distance between Istanbul and Beijing. Which according to the internet is 4710 miles.

Whoa, that is a lot larger than what I had imagined, considering the typical territorial span of the players. But nice to know.
The moon information is also really useful

If the moon is big enough to have an atmosphere, retain water and even have a flora, wouldn't it severely impact the stability of our planet's tilt and orbit? Unless they're more like twin planets than an actual planet-satellite system.

Both the planet and moon are more massive but not larger than our Earth and moon.

But our races all evolved in this gravity so we're used to it.

Does the Moons atmosphere ever encounter with the planets atmosphere to form a temporary bridge that a balloon could possibly cross to moon?

<Snipped quote by Neruu>
I remember there was a story about this in the original Civ RP. It began somewhere around this page: forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/1350.. . I don't remember much of the details but parts included a mystery of the history not resolved even IC.

I'm gonna have to go read some of old roleplay. Memory isn't the greatest and lost a lot of notepads with random stuff I wrote down.

I would imagine that in order for that to happen the moon and planet would have to be very close. And in that case there would be absolutely insane tidal forces.

In other words, no one living anywhere near the coast would be safe.

After a bit of research, I found this on the Wikipedia page of solar eclipses, "The width of the track of a central eclipse varies according to the relative apparent diameters of the Sun and Moon. In the most favorable circumstances, when a total eclipse occurs very close to perigee, the track can be up to 267 km (166 mi) wide and the duration of totality may be over 7 minutes.[24] Outside of the central track, a partial eclipse is seen over a much larger area of the Earth. Typically, the umbra is 100–160 km wide, while the penumbral diameter is in excess of 6400 km."

So, with this in mind (and translating it into miles), the distance that you would witness a partial solar eclipse would be around "the excess of" 4,000 miles. If I am thinking of the right river mouth that you talked about (eastern coast), then all the races except the snow brutes, being on the far northwestern coast, would witness this at least. That is assuming that the moon, star, and planet are the same sizes as Earth. You could say that it is somewhat bigger and that could shadow most of the continent in a partial eclipse if you so wished. Maybe if the world societies gathered in the same couple-hundred mile radius, we could all witness a full eclipse, but that is rather wishful thinking :)

I did not really think about whole tidal forces being a issue.

There's a lot of interesting things in it.

On eclipses, climate change, and such, I think they should happen as they would make for interesting stories. For example, if the Snow Brutes don't see an eclipse but all other races do, that could lead them to question why it wasn't everywhere, leading to an international interest in astronomy and space exploration. For climate change, at least in natural ice ages, I think that if they are going to happen, they should be before we get to an era where hundreds of years is a long time.
