Story
The East Market. The North Market merged with The East Market ages ago, making it stand apart from the South and West markets as the largest and most diverse market in the city. It's a place where people from all walks of life come and go and where worlds collide. The city guard force is slim in this part of the city in spite of having the greatest need for heightened security, so the regulars are forced to enforce their own peace. They do a good job most of the time, but there have been plenty of... disagreements in the past. These scuffles are rare in spite of the wide variety of beliefs and mindsets jostling about the streets every day, and fortunately for all, mob mentality only spreads through the ranks of the like-minded.
Hundreds of shopkeepers and merchants line the streets for miles, all vying for the attention and the coins of the passers by, all doing their best to put food on the table. Many shops are open all hours of the day and night to keep watch over their wares and those of nearby friends, but most are forced to trust their unguarded livelihood to fate. For these merchants, life in the market is everything. It's where they work, play, socialize, learn, and grow.
So we welcome you to join us in this place frozen in time and space yet linked to all time and space—this hub of unlimited potential. We hope you enjoy your stay!
Goals
This RP aims to be a place where all sorts of characters can pop in and out and interact. The setting is "general fantasy and steampunk," and you can add to the scenery whatever you feel would add to the environment so long as it does not depart from this general setting and does not lock it into a grander story. Your characters can come and go and have their own adventures, but your adventures must not hijack the the entire (or even the majority of) the setting without explicit consent from a majority of the players in your immediate vicinity. There must still be enough room for players not involved in your adventure. In fact, here's an idea, if you meet up with someone in the market and decide to go on an adventure, go make a new RP topic to have your adventure! The East Market will be here when you need supplies or return triumphant.
If you want to set up a shop and be a merchant, please do! Help populate the market with PCs and reduce the number of NPCs! If you just want to pass through and visit from time to time, by all means go ahead. The East Market is here to be a hub, a playground, or a home, however you want to play. Nobody will stop you from setting up your dream shop or from being a celebrated hero full of stories.
To reiterate:
The East Market is an open location that can be tied in with other RP locales with references if the settings are similar enough (i.e., fantasy/steampunk—no aliens/high tech futurism). The one important factor is consistency—The East Market stands on its own, and while it can tie together other RPs, it is not bound to the rules of any RPs that your characters might come from. By all means, do keep your characters bound to your RP's rules if you want, but The East Market is a place for character development, world building, and intermingling.Rules
The rules are fairly open and free, but there are a few important ones you've got to pay attention to:
- Add a character description to the Characters tab.
- Anyone can jump in and out of this RP and can have as many characters as they want without approval, but don't forget to drop a description of your character in the Characters tab before posting in the IC tab!
- When in doubt about what information to include for your characters, follow someone else's format and fill in the blanks for your character.
- Post a link to your character's character sheet the first time you post as them! Post it as many times following as you feel is appropriate.
- Be as creative and explanatory as you want, but the most important detail is character appearance.
- Be clear about what character you are posting for.
- We should be able to easily reference the Characters tab so we know what your character looks/sounds/acts like if we want.
- I recommend wrapping your character's dialogue in a color that represents them well but that is still easy to read. Just copy and paste that same color when you want to make your character speak.
- Make posts easy to follow.
- If your character is interacting with or responding to another character, tag or quote the user you are responding to.
- If responding to multiple characters, tag each one and what you are responding to. Optionally, put an hr tag between each interaction to help split it up.
- Original characters only.
- Make your own character—No licensed characters allowed!
- Be creative. Even if it's just a foil of your real-life personality, don't use someone else's character.
- Keep the theme appropriate.
- Because this RP is so open, it might be tempting to slip in something that wouldn't fit in the world (like high tech alien equipment or perhaps even Saiyans/some other licensed thing). Don't.
- It doesn't have to be Tolkien fantasy—if you have a different style of fantasy or steampunk or something you invented yourself, you are welcome to include it. Just make sure you explain it if perhaps it's not widely known.
- Keep your post footprint small.
- If you have multiple characters and you posted with one and now want to post with another, definitely go ahead and make a new post for that character.
- But if you were the last person to post IC as a certain character and you want that character to do another thing, don't make a new post, just update your existing one.
- Just to be clear, if another person posts something after you and you want to have your character do something else, make a new post. We just don't want 50 individual posts all from one person with one character in a row.
- The City Guard has absolute authority if/when they show up—be respectful to their decisions.
- The City Guard is basically just this RP's GMs who decide they need to step in and stop things from going bad.
- Keep the RP thread local.
- This RP should only contain events and conversations that occur within The East Market.
- By all means, discuss and tell tales of your adventures to interested ears, but don't post an adventure in this RP if it's happening outside of the market.
- The market is plenty big enough to have its own adventures, so have your external adventures elsewhere.
- Follow the duel rules below if you want to fight PVP!
- Don't kill anyone...
- ...without permission.
- If you get into an argument and want to fight, go ahead, just be sure to set out the rules for how you're going to fight with the other player beforehand in the OOC tab, but don't kill anyone unless they explicitly say in OOC that they want their character to be killed.
- Check these rules for updates, because as this grows, there's a good chance more will be added.
- Check the 0th post (above this one) for updates!
Duel Rules
Link to the Duel ThreadTo keep fights between players fair, we need to have more strict rules for dueling.
If you want to duel, contact Alamantus first and we'll work out all the details over at the Duel Thread!
Follow the steps below after contacting Alamantus:
- Before starting a duel, state that you are starting a duel in the IC tab and put a link to the Duel thread (roleplayerguild.com/topics/86465)!
- After Alamantus starts the duel over there for you, update your post to include the start post's permalink instead of just the above link!
- Contact Alamantus if you need help with this and he'll do his best to help!

The East Market is your playground! Be as creative as you want, and let's build a world together! My hope is that you'll be nice to each other, but who can really control such a hodgepodge of characters, right?
If you have any questions, need clarification, or aren't sure if something you want to do would be allowed by the City Guard, ask them here in OOC or PM a GM if you want.
