I didn't exactly go in depth, but literally a five second google search brings up a number of depictions of the Greek pantheon as envisioned by Greek sculptors. Looks like particularly impressive humans, basically.

I think he's looking for whether or not they were considered Greek in ethnicity or were another race entirely.

The facial structure and general features such as the hair does not correlate with any germanic traits (I.e blonde genes). So it is strange they would think them blonde or similair. :D

I'm not Dedonous but the way I usually understood it, Greeks (unlike Egyptians who gave their gods animal heads and features) associated their gods to being more human and that was mostly to connect their influence over mankind. The way they worshiped them, they could be considered different and superior to humans. Most cultures also use their own human characteristics in their deities as shown through the ages.

Add on:

Honestly, I'm a bit confused what exactly he's asking.

I'll be honest, do you really think the Greeks would envision their gods as anything other than Greek in ethnicity? They wouldn't even have felt the need to state it at any point, to be anachronistic for a moment racism was that ingrained into ancient cultures it wouldn't even cross their minds.

That would probably make the most sense. I mean what else would you model the Greek Gods after if not yourself.

Although I do wonder if Ded has put a spin on them it would be neat.

Ded's Athanatoi are shapeshifters. They look like whatever the locals looked like (which would be the Greeks), from my understanding.

That's true only if they're among the local humans. But since they're shapeshifters I do wonder if they have a prefered form when among their kind.

@VATROU I can't speak for Ded and the Athanatoi, but Hekate is of a similar nature and with her I've written it such that she prefers the image in which she appeared in ancient times.

@Fallenreaper Speaking of, Athinar and I decided that Josie would happen upon the Red Devil based upon instructions from her boss, who sent her there for information on the Cowl/magical protection/whatever circumstances call for essentially.

Interesting question. The short answer would be that the gods did look like the Greeks, more or less. I would recommend that this guy look into Greek paintings (and sculptures) on pottery. Sometimes, the Greeks would write the character's name next to the figure. You don't need to solely rely on the literary remains of Greek culture. Also, a quite caveat: He needs to do research on what time period the visual representations come from. Also note that the Romans sometimes made copies of Greek sculptures, so he could potentially use that despite the statue being made later.

Also, the comment about the Greeks not seeing themselves as being "Greek" is utter bull shit (pardon my language...this is the field of my thesis work). While he is right that they saw themselves as "Athenians" or "Spartans" or "Corinthians" first and foremost, there was still an awareness that they were all "Greeks" (or rather Hellenes). See Herodotus' Histories 8.144 for an example of this awareness.

...On top of that, there is the fact that we are all of us Greeks (τὸ Ἑλληνικὸν), of one blood and one tongue, united by the temples that we have raised to the gods, and by the way in which we offer them sacrifice, and by the customs that we have in common (Tom Holland translation 2014).

Edit: Wow...a lot of OOC posts went up before I finished this...

Edit2: Also, see Xenophanes' Wikipedia page for insight about his criticism of how the Greeks imagined their gods. Also, see Fragments 11 through 16 here (although it is the same quotes referenced in the wikipedia article). I also mentioned Xenophanes' views in the Athanatoi CS.

And we're off! The Arc has officially started which means, these individuals have shown their desire to be included. Now, the next step is up to the rest and NN to get set up.

Btw, @Dedonus in the event NMS doesn't get to it and is too busy. Could you please look over Shard's CS for him and see if it's approve worthy? Namely as I don't want anymore newbies left out and forgotten here.
