Grey appeared beside Ricardo and spoke to him. He seemed to be questioning Ricardo's resolve, but this did not upset Ricardo. He was sure that the look on his face was anything but confident.

Ricardo turned his head slightly toward Grey but kept his eyes on a door with his name spelled out in gold. "Well, just because I'm prepared to walk through hell, doesn't mean I'm happy about it." He then turned his entire body to face Grey, reaching out a hand to tap him on the side of the shoulder. "Alright, just in case I don't see you again. Goodbye. It was great to meet you. I hope we meet up later though."

After their goodbye, Ricardo walked as calmly as he could to the door labled with his name. It was obvious that this was where he was supposed to go, no use turning back now. Opening the door revealed nothing but a dark empty room. As he stepped inside, he looked around for a light switch near the entrance. There didn't seem to be anything of the sort.

After a moment, he gave up on his search for light and decided to shut the door, looking back into the hallway as he did so. With the door now shut, only the darkness kept him company.

Abby glanced up at the unfamiliar man who spoke to her, but she looked away, hiding her tears, almost immediately. He seemed sympathetic to her concerns. Abby felt heat rising to her cheeks. Somehow, his kindness made her shame all the greater. Fortunately, before too long, the man moved forward into the light. Abby took a deep breath. She didn't want to move forward. She wasn't ready. But if she didn't, she would have to endure the stares of the others, their judgment that she was weak. Even the kindest of people made such determinations, though their intentions were often good. Her foster parents had shown her sympathy, even pity, for the longest time after adopting her. Teachers, classmates, boyfriends - they were all the same. Show them the first sign of vulnerability and it would forever define you. That was why Abby couldn't stay. Regardless of her feelings, the only choice was to move forward.

She stepped forward, marching into the light before she could second guess herself. For a moment, it was blinding, but then, she was in a hallway lined with doors. The name "Camilla" was written on one of them. Abby walked past it and checked the next set, which, as she expected, included one with her name on it. Not wanting to deal with the others, she bolted through the door and shut it behind her.

For a few seconds, she was in utter darkness. Then, a small lamp hanging from the ceiling flickered on. It illuminated a table with a single chair on each side.

Slowly, Abby approached the table. A gruff voice called out to her from the darkness.

"Sit down. Everything will be explained."

After a moment's hesitation, Abby seated herself in the nearest chair. A tall, muscular man in a police uniform took the one opposite her.

"Gotcha," he muttered.

Abby tried to flee, but suddenly, she was tied to the chair, arms pinned at her side. She gasped, eyes darting in each direction, but the two of them were alone. No one was going to save her. She bit her lip, took a deep breath to calm her nerves. She recalled all the advice her attorney had given her. She just had to keep her mouth closed. He couldn't hurt her.

The cop waved his hand, and a bunch of cell phones appeared on the table. Of course, she recognized them all.

"Did you steal these phones?" asked the cop.

Abby steeled herself, pressing her lips shut - but, for some reason, they reopened at once, and the words poured out despite her resolve.

"I did. All of them."

Why? Why had she said that? Something was really, really wrong! Tears trickled down her cheeks, and she squirmed uselessly within her bonds. This was a dream, just a dream!

"Are you scared?" asked the officer.

"Terrified," said Abby at once, against her will.

"You should be," replied the cop, scowling. "In this room, you can neither lie nor maintain your silence. You're going to confess to everything here - and those phones are just the beginning."

Abby's shaking arms worked furiously to be free, but with a snap of his finger, the officer froze them in place. Abby looked away, sobbing. "Please... don't to this..." she whimpered.

"Only one person can stop this, kid, and it ain't me."

Now that everyone had left, on to their adventure, Cammila was left alone. She had two options; turn back an live in the magical city with no name, happy forever, or she could try to return to her own world, a place far far away. The path ahead might be dangerous, but in the end she concluded that it was the right way to go. Reassuring herself that she wasn't disobeying anyone she stepped through the glowing door as well, passing into the light.

The white hallway had four doors, each with a single word scrawled across them. Only the new man was left, Abby and the other boy were already gone. She peered at each door, trying to pick out the one Abby might have gone through. They all looked the same to Cammila though.

Dim florescent light started to fill the room. The light came from small bulbs in each of the four corners, where the walls met the ceiling.

This dim light revealed two important factors. The ceiling was low, easily touchable without stretching, and the floor was wet. The wetness seemed to be moving, as Ricardo noticed that in the bottom corners of the room water was leaking inside. At the rate the water was entering, the room would be full to the ceiling in about 30 minutes.

Ricardo was already starting to freak out. He'd always had a fear of drowning, and was a horrible swimmer. But even if he could swim, the water would eventually leave no room. The man said he couldn't die. So what would happen when the water filled his lungs? Would he pass out and wake up later,or just stay on the edge of consciousness with a pounding suffocating headache?

As the minutes passed, he tried to contain his horror, assuring himself that this would all be over eventually. It would be worth it. Just as he started to feel some semblance of confidence returning, something brushed against his leg.

It hadn't even occurred to him that there could be something under the water. But when another creature slid along his forearm, there was no longer any doubt. There was at least one snake swimming around in the water with him. There could easily be more.

Soon his heart was fluttering at an inconceivable pace. The water was up to his shoulders, and multiple times, snakes had surfaced close to his face, while others crawled around on his body.

Ricardo's former resolve had been shattered. There was no way this could be worth it. Silent tears fell down his face as he tried his best not to sob like a schoolchild.

Peering around at each door the young girl soon found that aside from the script they were all identical. She had no choice but to try each one until she found the one Abby was in. Starting with the closest she pulled on the handle, then pushed, and pulled again. It was sealed tight, almost as though the handle was a decoration on a solid wall. The next door was the same, unmovable and pointless. Abby would most likely be through a door that would open. The third door opened with ease, its dark interior impossible to see into.

"Abby?" Camilla whispered, hoping to not have to enter the room. Having no response it seemed like the thing to do. As she stepped in to the darkness she called out once again "Abbbyy?? Are you here?"Her call was met with the creak of the door this time, shutting behind her and leaving the room a void. For a moment she could hear the beat of her heart, like drums in a silent room. Only for a moment.

Dim light filtered in through the window of the stone house she as now standing in. It was her house, the adron, were she was not aloud. Two couches sat against the wall and the tables were set up as though supper was to be served, goblets and platters laying empty in wait. The silence was once again impeding, this was a room where men talked of philosophy, it should not be empty.

Moving on she looked through the other rooms, desperate for her family. The kitchen was empty as well, the slaves weren't even there. Similarly he courtyard was bare. As she walked to the center she found her lemon tree dead and shriveled. Tears welled in her eyes as the only thing she had slightly considered to be her own was gone. If it were not for the rain she would have sat mourning her tree for much longer, but her mother would not let her to sit in the rain before, now wasn't any different. Would she even still mind?

Trodding back inside she continued her search, careful to wash her feet off first. The rest of the house was more of the same, empty rooms left they way she'd last remembered them. Finally after Camilla concluded the house was deserted she sat in the Gynaikon, thinking of what to do and where her family might be. Did they leave her? or was she to late. Did they die? Did they still love her? Thunder exploded outside, shaking the entire house. Rain began leaking in through the roof, dripping to the floor.

Abby stared at the officer sitting across from her, wide-eyed and trembling. He was sneering at her, as if she were the scum of the earth and he was about to revel in making her interrogation a living nightmare. Yet when he spoke, his voice was level.

"Why did you take the phones?" he asked.

'I don't know'. That was the answer she tried to give. But when her mouth opened, she said something entirely different.

"I just did it for fun. I was bored, and too scared of the people around me to get to know them instead."

Her cheeks grew hot as the words rushed out of her. She sounded pathetic. Yet the tears trickling down her cheeks spoke of an acceptance of those words as true. And, struggle though she wanted to, her arms were completely immobile. She could not brush the tears from her face.

"And what made you so scared?" asked the officer, folding his arms.

"If I let them in, they would have hurt me," Abby whispered, "Laughed at me. Left me." She shuddered. "Everyone leaves in the end. Mother and father... grandma... all the friends I made when I was little. If they didn't leave me, I was taken from them. And every time, I felt so alone. So I decided to just stay alone. That way, no one could betray me again."

The officer grunted. "You know you're pitiful, right?" he asked.

Tears blurring her vision, Abby nodded. "I know."

What felt like an eternity had passed. The water that had been filling the room had finally stopped rising. This left hardly a foot's distance from the top of the water and the low lying ceiling. To keep from drowning, Ricardo had to jump up and doggie paddle. Eventually he would tire and fall back down only to jump back up. If only he had learned how to float on his back, he thought desperately to himself.

Eventually Ricardo started to get used to the desperate pattern of hopping helplessly around and the feel of snakes slithering casually along his body. If things kept going this way, he could even see himself getting used to the situation entirely. Then maybe he could think of some way out of here.

But things did not stop there; the snakes had other plans in mind. One at a time the snakes crawling around on his body started biting down. The pain did not stop at the puncture wounds as each snake seemed to be injecting him with some kind of stinging venom. Then, one more snake crawled up his torso and wrapped itself tightly around his neck, making it hard to breath.

In spite of this torture, a small mocking voice in his own mind reminded him that he wouldn't die. But death, at this point, would be a welcome escape from his new reality. Despite this death wish, his body's instincts would not stop. He had to continue jumping up for air. He had to struggle.

Blinding panic had become the only real emotion left in his heart.

Taking a deap breath the young girl reassured herself.

"nobody's left me," she whispered "I just got lost. and now they're worried about me. And i'm going to find my family."

Wiping tears from her eyes she stood up. Looking down the hall she started on her way. Her heart rated steadied as she walked through the familiar house until it was once again calm as she reached the door to the outside.

Heedless to say the door did not lead out to the yard, or into the streets of her home town. It led to a metalic hallway, globes shimmering across the metallic surface like the moon on the sea. windows lay every where along the wall, though they didn't interest Cammilla at first. Windows were boring compared to a hallway made of silver and moonlight. After several minuets of wondering she realized that she no longer knew where she was, nor how to get back to the terrible version of her home.

The windows now were the only chance to see where she was but they offered no help either.

It wasn't that they weren't interesting to watch, they were. They were just so normal, thy were her life, she knew of all these times. One showed Gaynor with tears streaming down her face at Gavrielle's grave, but there is no god in Olympus who would bring back a dead little girl, and there were never any heroes in Rome anyway. There were scenes of her father, his bouts of terrible rage thundering through the barrier. It was her life, and she knew of it already, but this perspective made her question wanting to go back.

when she'd entered the maze she had been certain that, beyond anything else, she wanted to go home. To not have that was to give up entirely. There was no real decision made to go back home she kept moving to leave the labyrinth. Ignoring the windows as she went. It seemed like hours passed before at last she found a door out.

It was a simple blank white room, bare of all interesting things save for two archways. One led up, the other down. Writing was scrawled across the top though it was useless to the girl. She resolved to wait for someone, Abby or either of the two men. At least for now, she had nothing to lose.

Abby cried, slumped in her chair, until she was out of tears. The police officer opposite hr watched in silence, a mixture of pity and disgust in his eyes.

"W-what's going to happen to me?" asked Abby when she stopped crying. The cop answered with a shrug. "That's up to you, kid," he said, sliding his chair back and standing. "My job's to find out the truth, not to pass judgment. That's his job."

He nodded into the darkness, then walked away, fading into nothing.

Abby stared at the vacant space the cop had gestured toward, squinting. There was nothing there; no movement, no sound, no light. She was alone, still tied to her chair.

"Hello?" she called, shivering. Surely, she had failed whatever trial this room was supposed to represent. The voice from before had promised she would not die, so at the very least, she would not be put to death... so what punishment awaited her? Torture? Eternal imprisonment? "Please, answer me!"

Just when she had given up on receiving a response, a deathly quiet voice rose out of the abyss.

This room is the projection of your deepest fear. Tell me, girl... what terrifies you most?

"The truth," said Abby instantly, despite her racing heart. Apparently, she was still under whatever spell forced her to answer questions honestly.

Then truth is what you shall suffer.

A shadow materialized before her. Tt coalesced into something vaguely flat, then began shining on one side. The glow gradually faded, leaving glass in its wake. A mirror. Abby met her reflection's eyes.

It sneered at her.

It felt as though entire days passed in that hellish torture room, though it was probably just a few hours. Time had become meaningless. Eventually Ricardo became desensitized to the pain, accepting of his fate.

That's when his body went limp. Holding his breath, he resigned himself to lying at the bottom of the water for the rest of his life. Coincidentally, this was all that was needed for him to start floating on his back. Still being bitten and with a dismal view of the ceiling, he closed his eyes and cleared his mind. There was no use struggling anymore; there was truly nothing left he could do.

It may have been that the snakes were biting less frequently, or maybe it was the feeling of the hard floor on his back. Either way, Ricardo finally opened his eyes. The roof was far away, the floor around him only slightly damp, and the last of the snakes was pulling it's fangs out of his neck.

He sat up and watched as the snake slithered into one other holes in the corner of the room. He was now alone and mentally exhausted, but he had never been calmer. The lights in the room went out... and not even knowing why, he smiled.

Just then a door opened, greeting him with a light, inviting him to continue. For a moment, he considered staying put. It wasn't that he was afraid of what lied ahead; he wasn't sure if he could ever feel fear again. No, he had just become lazy. But something greater inside him told him to stand, to walk toward the light... and so he did.

Andy stirred from his nap, stretching his arms up over his head. It was bright, he could tell that much without opening his eyes. Had he overslept and now the setting sun was reflecting through the rafters of the barn? He swore he hadn't gone to sleep that long ago, just enough to rest some before he finished up the rest of old man Brown's new sheep fence. Damn coyotes kept getting in at the lambs, if they kept killing them, then Brown would lose money. Which would mean Andy would lose money. Which would mean he might have to go farther west for better paying jobs in the winter. That would be a long way by hitch hiking, and even longer by bike. Nah sir, he'd like to stay at home in Oklahoma, and only move down for Texas work in the winter if absolutely necessary.

Yawning, he sat up, ice blue orbs flickering open, the boy ready to pick up his work gloves and get back to the lovely job of wrangling barbed wire. Except, his work gloves weren't there. The soft bed of hay he had been sleeping on wasn't there. As a matter of fact, the whole damn barn wasn't there either!

Now fully awake, Andy leapt to his feet, whirling around in shock. Oh god, oh god, oh sweet Mary, mother of god! He wasn't in Brown's ranch anymore, he wasn't in May anymore, he probably wasn't even in Oklahoma anymore! He was in a giant, gleaming city, silver and steel sparkling as buildings reached up to scrape the sky. At first, Andy perhaps wondered if he had been spirited away to one of the great cities of the world. Houston, Miami, Chicago, L.A., New York, Seattle, Boston, any of them! But the hovering baubles in the air and the flying cars proved him wrong.

Staggering with shock, Andy bumbled backwards, knocking into a cart selling bells and toys. And the cacophony that reached his ears sent him reeling. And then he realized. He... He could hear them? Stunned, he grabbed one of the strings of bells, shaking it. A ringing, tingling sound reached his eardrums and travelled up his spine, hitting him again. He could feel the vibrations in his hands, these sounds were real! This wasn't a dream or a hallucinations, he could feel the cool touch of bronze and tin in his hands! Not noticing his vision becoming foggy with tears, the boy grinned widely, delirious with joy. He could hear! He could hear everything! Everything and anything! He was cured! He opened his mouth to scream out to the world, to let them know "I can hear!"

What came out was more of a garbled yell.
Surprised at the croak that had come out of his mouth, out of his mouth, Andy tried to speak again. Again, an inarticulate mass of vowels came out, a slush of speech. Oh, that was right. He had never spoken before in his life. He didn't know how to speak.
"Hey, kid! Are you doing alright?" came a voice from behind him. Andy looked up, seeing the man at the stall selling the bells and toys. Andy quickly dropped the bells with a clang and stood up, embarrassed. He was still getting over the fact that someone had just spoken to him and he had heard it!
"Oh you can keep that. Everything's free here, food, drinks, clothes. Not that you'll need them, no one ever goes hungry here. You're obviously new, given you're still in the tracksuit. If you wander, you'll find clothes that you can wear instead of those old things." The man happily chittered. Andy found himself still watching his lips, associating new sounds with the motions of the mouth. He looked down eventually and realized the man was right. His clothes, boots, and pistol were gone. Now he was in plain white sneakers and an ugly grey tracksuit, like a jogging elephant. More importantly, his pad and pen, and his weeks wages were gone. Feeling his elation ebb, Andy remembered the responsible thing to do, and began his pantomime asking for one thing.

Pen and paper?

Pen and paper were gotten. Currency, however, was nowhere to be found. After a short conversation with the shop owner, Andy soon discovered that money didn't exist in this place. That he was in some sort of utopian paradise where thirst, hunger, exhaustion and illness were mere memories, where people could simply take whatever they wanted. Feeling a sense of unease settling over him, Nick walked into the first clothing store he found, changing into a simple pair of jeans, work boots, a cotton t-shirt and jacket. He abandoned the ugly grey clothes, walking back out onto the street and setting himself to wander.

It became apparent very soon that this city should not exist. There was no other place like it on earth. He passed by neighborhoods that reminded him of ancient Greece, Victorian London, medieval Germany, 14th century China. Places that you wouldn't see all meshed up together unless you were in a showcase at Disneyland. And yet here they were, with those great sic-fi skyscrapers looming in the distance. The entire atmosphere felt more ominous than welcoming to Andy, and he was reminded of a passage in the Odyssey he read in 8th grade. After being attacked by the Cicones and losing a good deal of his men, Odysseus and his ships were swept up in a storm lasting nine days and nine nights, until they were brought to shore on the island of the lotus eaters. Thats who these people reminded Andy of, the lotus eaters. Living in their high city with happy faces and happy lives, all so cheery and oblivious. There had to be a catch somewhere, he just knew it. And so he ignored when people called out their goods, he ignored the tantalizing scents of food, and he ignored the beautiful houses and buildings. All of it he ignored until he ran into the blue man, Adam.

Apathetic, elusive, and generally unhelpful, Andy conversed with Adam through written notes as best he could. But the hologram remained vague, and seemed to only serve as little more than a glorified shopping assistance. Andy pestered him repeatedly over where they were, what this city was, how did he get back to Oklahoma? What year was it, what continent were they on, were they all dead? The AI remained eternally unhelpful, and irritated, Andy dismissed him.

That was when he saw the red girl.

She beckoned him to follow her, and follow he did. At least she seemed more helpful than that Adam program. Andy didn't know anything about computers and programming, only that they were big, important, and you had to be really rich to have them. Like companies and hospitals and military personnel. But he did read science fiction, and he knew that AI were basically just the tiny little minds inside of robots. They could do their actions on their own, unlike robots, and performed their own duties. And tended to take over the world, in one story or another. But Andy felt more disturbed hanging around with Adam than he did the little red girl. At least she was taking him somewhere.

Eventually, chasing her through the city streets, Andy came to a place that reminded him of the Indian casinos he knew Vic Holt went to every Saturday, to blow his money on gambling and showgirls. Or as Vic called it, Slots and Slu- His train of thought was derailed as the girl ran straight into one of the casinos, and Andy hurried to follow her. He ran through the casino, paying no mind to the flashing neon lights or the new bells and sounds that ached against his newly freed eardrums. Instead, he came to a large, metal door that the girl held open for him. He paused, glancing at her with new found nervousness. As if sensing his distrust, the girl walked in ahead of him. Andy swallowed the bile welling up in his throat and followed suit, stepping into the room beyond.

The white room lay baron for hours, no sound escaping from behind any of the doors. Like any child Camilla soon became bored, it is not in childrens' nature to be patient.

At first she stilted her boredom by counting the things she'd gotten from the gleaming city. A dress for an empress. A golden headband guided with bees and flowers. A gold and emerald ring. All seemed frivolous now that she was alone. For a little while she spun the ring on its side. But the ring was lopsided and quickly fell over each time, the weight of the jewel pulling it down. Putting the ring back on she sighed and looked around once again.

The other white doors had not moved, nor had either of the arch ways.

Putting the ring back on and her headband. She began braiding her hair, and then put it in a bun. It was an odd hairstyle to her, though she didn't dislike it. It was new, and she enjoyed her hair being out of her face for once. Now with nothing else to do she stood from the ground and wandered toward the doors she'd not come from. tugging held no results, and no matter the force applied to the doors they would not budge, not even her own. The next more obvious exits where the archways.

Golden writing graced the top of each arch, high above the young girls head and beyond her comprehension. The first arch way led up, the bustle of the city faintly floating down. It was bright and promising. It would almost certainly led back to the city, away from the horrors. The second was darker, black stones lay strewn across the floor, thickening as the hallway went on. They glowed red like coal, and in fact that is what they were. Dull metal brambles stretched across the hall, the thorns as uninviting as the hot coals.

"Adam?" the little girl whispers "are you here?" She waits for a moment. "Adam, Can you help me?"

Ricardo stood in the metal corridor as the door shut behind him. A few paces ahead he could see a black framed window pane. A thought crossed his mind; maybe he could smash his way out of this hell by literally smashing the window and climbing out.

As he approached, two major things seemed off. One, there didn't seem to be any glass. If there was glass there, it would have to be the cleanest glass imaginable. Secondly, his father was just on the other side.

The man was playing with a baby, holding its hand, helping it walk. Ricardo's mother stood opposite of his father, calling the baby to her. And between them both was Ricardo's older sister at the age of eight.

It was obvious what he was watching, a scene from his own past. Confused, Ricardo reached to the window only to find his hand stopped by an invisible wall. A part of him knew that his effort would go wasted, but that didn't stop him from swinging his fist as hard as he could. The pain was excruciating as his knucles shattered against the solid barrier, but this pain did not surprise or upset. It was not as bad as the snake venom, and he knew his hand would heal immediately.

Finally, tearing himself away from the sight before him, Ricardo began to walk. Window after window, he watched as his life unfolded before his eyes until... he saw her, his first love.

Putting both his hands up against the window, he watched as a 17 year old version of himself walked closely behind the slender brunette through the woodland trails. Through a river, across logs, and over slippery rocks they went, eventually arriving at the top of a waterfall. A single tear ran down Ricardo's face as he watched them kiss. The scene was framed perfectly by the trees and sky beyond the water's edge.

Ricardo felt compelled to stay, to watch the show for as long as it would play. As far as he could remember, this particular day was one of his fondest memories to date.

Abby stared into the mirror and met her own callous eyes.

"What do you want?" she yelled. Her reflection grinned wickedly, though the real Abby was doing no such thing. "You're evil. Just go away!"

Evil?

The voice was stronger now, and more familiar. It was hers.

If I am evil, then so are you, for we are one and the same.

"No - we can't be!" shouted Abby. She was messed up, but she wasn't a monster. Her sins were born of boredom, not cruelty!

Why do you deny it? You know what you are capable of. Speak the truth - are you not wicked and detestable?

Abby opened her mouth as if to speak. But, this time, she said nothing. There was no confession that she was a failure, no admission that she was pathetic. Something about the image before her caught her attention. It was the girl's eyes - her eyes. Even filled with malice as they were, there was something familiar about them.

She closed her eyes, tried to remember. Slowly, a picture formed in her mind's eye. It was a photo, one that had been taken before her parents had died. Back then, she had still been, free of the sorrow that awaited her. Her brown eyes shone with hope and innocence.

When Abby's eyelids lifted and she gazed into the mirror again, she saw that glow. After all this time, it wasn't gone. There was still hope.

"No," she said, voice growing strong, "No, I'm not." If the mirror thought she would go down without a fight, it was in for a big surprise.

Andy now stood before a black door. A black door that bore his name. He had already come through the white room with the voice recording. It was his first time ever hearing one, the sounds harsh and almost metallic on his newly freed ears. He had also walked through the blinding white hallway, and now stood in front of the door that had his name. There were other doors as well, but he hadn't stopped to read them. This door was the one meant for him and him alone. He could feel it in his gut. This was the test the voice had told him he had to face. In truth, he was nervous, uneasy, even frightened. But, what else was there for him? Walking back out and spending his life among the lotus eaters? No thanks. He'd get bored of that kind of life long before his time ran out. And so, taking a deep breath, he opened his door, walking into the blackness.

The door closed behind him, leaving him in total darkness. Patiently, Andy waited for the lights to come on, as he knew they would. He waited. And he waited. And he waited. Now he was growing scared, feeling his heart pick up. Why weren't the lights coming back on? He was here, wasn't he? They should be on! Anxious, he took a step forwards, suddenly stopping as he felt a chill run down his spine. He... He couldn't hear his footstep. He had heard it before, walking through the empty hallway. Why couldn't he hear it now? Feeling panic well up in his chest, he stomped down on the floor, again and again and again. Nothing. Gradually, he came to a horrifying realization. He was deaf. And what was more, he was blind.

In his horror, Andy screamed and fell down, scrambling on the floor. But no vibrations came from his throat, he was mute again as well. He was deaf, dumb, and blind, left screaming silently to unhearing ears and uncaring walls. He tried blinking and rubbing his eyes, ignoring the pain that came from how hard he rubbed them. He had to see, he had to be able to see!! Sight was his only lifeline in the world! It was the only useful sense he had! It was all he had! He needed his eyes! Why weren't they working?! Why?!

Sobbing hysterically, Andy laid down on the floor, writhing in anguish. His eyes, his eyes! They might as well be gone! He couldn't see anymore! He was useless! He slammed his fists down into the floor, crying harder as they bled. It wasn't fair, God, it wasn't fair! Hadn't he lost enough?! Hadn't he had enough taken from him?! His mom, his mouth, his ears, and now his eyes!? Where would it end?! Why him?! Why?!

Breaking down, he curled up on the floor, accepting his fate. He couldn't fight this. How could he fight this? He was blind. He was useless. He would die like this, unable to see and hear. This stupid, horrible, lotus-eating world had given him his mouth and ears, and then had taken them away, with his eyes. He was going to die, trapped, scared, and useless. He could feel his heart slowing down, his adrenaline fading as he accepted his death.

And then, he heard it. The door opened, and the light came through again.

Ricardo tore his eyes away from the memory. He could stay here watching this entire day unfold. He could watch years unfold. But eventually, he would reach the point where she lies to him, cheats on him the first month they graduate high school. He would have to watch himself spiral out of control as he developed a horrible drinking problem in college.

No, this was a story that Ricardo already knew. He couldn't re-live it anymore. Moving on from the window pane, he tried to focus more on the path before him. He walked for what seemed like hours, ignoring the windows as best he could. Eventually he reached a white door.

As he opened the door and stepped through, he was greeted by another white room. In the center of the room stood the little girl from before. Ricardo wondered for a minute if she had to go through torture as brutal as his own. But this thought didn't last long. He felt ashamed when he realized that his heart was hardened past the point of actually caring. Maybe he would soften again one day, but not today.

He then took note of the rest of the room. Doors lined three of the walls. While one contained two archways: "To Safety" / "To the Truth".

How stupid, he thought. After all they had put him through, they actually expected him to turn back. No, he hadn't suffered this damn much just to give up.

Looking over to the little girl, he asked, "I'm going through there." signaling to the pain filled hallway with one absent minded finger. "How about you?"

It was not Adam who came, but the tall Mystery man from before. How surprised Camilla must have seemed, her call for help had been answered. He didn't linger long for he seemed to have a mission, and it led him through the hall of torture. "That way is just hot coals and sharp tendrils as far as it goes," she said, "but the other way is just back up to the city."

She frowned, looking at the stairs leading up. "Do you think there's any other way back home?"

She didn't want to walk over hot coals or through sharp vines. She'd never dreamed she'd have to do anything of the sort in her life time before, but now it seemed like the only option. The look of the strange man told her as much.

If there was no other way out she would try to be brave. Camilla wanted only to go home, for her family. At the very least they didn't deserve to worry.

"I want to go home." she concluded.

He shakily got to his feet, his knees still feeling like strawberry jello. If anyone would ask him why strawberry, Andy wouldn't know what to say, other than he simply liked strawberry. But right now, even the thought of strawberry jello felt like it might send whatever was in his stomach right back up to his mouth. He didn't realize he was panting hard, scrambling out the door and into the light as quickly as he could, for fear that it would shut again and leave him in the darkness. He leaned heavily against the wall, his breath coming out accompanied by long, unintelligible whines. High pitched, filled with panic, he forced himself to calm down, not wanting to have a heart attack in this kind of place.

When Andy finally caught his breath and forced his stomach and heart rate back down, he noticed that he was in a window-lined hallway. Gray steel walls lined with black windows. How strange, he had ben certain it was daytime when he was outside. He swore he couldn't have been in that horrible blindness room more than an hour at most. Did time not pass normally here? He supposed that would make as much sense as anything else in this strange sci-fi world. He passed by one window, casting a sideways glance at it. And then he paused, his eyes widening at the sight before him.

In the window was a young woman, with pale skin, a heart shaped face, and long, wavy blonde hair cascading down her back. Her eyes were green and warm, with crinkly lines under them from suntans and smiles. She was perhaps a few years older than he was, 22 or 23, thin, with a small waist and tiny breasts. Her skin was dotted with freckles, more numerous than stars in the night sky. She had a chipped front tooth, one that showed when she gave one of her big, red lipstick smiles. Her nose was slightly crooked, having been broken once as a child. She was absolutely gorgeous, the most lovely woman he had ever laid his eyes on. She was warm, soft, loving, and understanding. And her attention was focused on the small child in front of her.

He was small, young. No more than five. Andy immediately recognized the chubby boy with white-blonde hair. He was drooling, dressed in overalls and a baseball hat, his sticky fingers clutching a toy truck. His keen eyes were trained on the woman, and when she smiled, he smiled his drooling, gap-toothed smile back at her. Outside of the window, the adult Andy smiled, feeling a stab of pain in his heart. His mother. What an angel she had been. A young widow working as a waitress at a crappy in-n-out diner in Oklahoma City, with a son everyone thought was retarded. But she knew. She knew he was smart. She had always believed in him. He couldn't speak, or read lips, or read at all back then. But he didn't have to know her words to know her love.

Then the scene changed. The woman was gone. Andy knew where, she had gone six feet underground in a tiny plot in Willow Creek Cemetery, courtesy of a drunk driver. An older Andy, now 6 or 7, sat alone on a schoolyard bench, dust blowing in the air. He was in clothes too big for him, basketball shorts and a mens medium t-shirt so baggy it hung off his shoulder. He had hated his baggy clothes, his thin arms and legs sticking out of them like twigs. They made him look like a white version of those emaciated Ugandan kids on the cover of the National Geographic magazines. Though, given that he lived on a diet of rice, cornbread, and sour milk in those days, emaciated he might well have been. Parkington's Home for Troubled Boys said it fed kids, didn't mean it fed them well. Protein and vegetables were for special occasions, or when state inspectors came down to visit. Even then, it was tripe.

Out of the corner of his eye, Andy spotted movement. Three boys, all bigger and older than him, were coming up behind him. They didn't even bother trying to be sneaky, they knew he couldn't hear. Besides, it wasn't like he could have run anyways. But the way they suddenly fell upon the young Andy obviously took him by surprise. They had him on the ground in seconds, stomping and kicking on him. Andy turned away, closing his eyes. He couldn't watch anymore. He knew where this went. This kind of routine would happen every day until July 28th, 1966, when he'd meet Simon. Simon would take care of him, Simon would teach him. Simon would be his older brother. Until Simon abandoned him to be an aid worker in Africa, the orphanage went bottom up, and he left to become a wandering farmhand. He didn't need to see anymore. Keeping his eyes forward, he refused to look anymore at the windows, until he finally came to another door.

He hoped it wasn't another dark, torturous room. When he opened it, thankfully, it was brightly lit, almost exactly like the room he had been in before the blind room. But this room was different. There were two other people in here.
Startled, Andy almost took a step back out of the room, bumping into the now closed door. Yep, these definitely looked like people, if not the weirdest pair he had ever seen. A young prepubescent girl dressed up like a roman princess, and a scary looking, pale young man who's ethnicity seemed hard to place, though Andy got the faintest suspicion he might be hispanic. His clothes struck him as odd, all black and sharp, like those punks one might see in the big cities up north, Boston or New York City. He was wary of them both, not sure whether this was a trap or another test. He waved cautiously to them, wanting to be certain that they were real people, and not illusions or wandering lotus eaters. He had had enough of both for now.

"You deny me," said the mirror, voice fainter than ever, yet devoid of emotion. "Yet you cannot lie. It follows, then, that you are blind. None capable of sight - of objective analysis of one's own actions - could deny that yours are those of a monster."

Abby snorted, the throbbing in her chest fading slowly. "A monster? You must not know what the really bad people are capable of." She walked over to the mirror, though she didn't remember standing. Once near, she pressed her hand against the glass, brushing the reflection of her cheek. It was cold. "Sometimes, I'm weak," she admitted, "That much is true. And weakness often leads to mistakes. But those alone don't define me. I'm not always an awful person. There's still enough of the old, happy me left to care about people. If there wasn't, I would have left that little girl on her own."

Abby wiped at her eyes. "You are fickle," said the mirror, "In this moment, you may believe there's hope. But the darkness is never far. It has taken you before, and will do so again. You are helpless to stop it."

"Maybe so," said Abby, "But I guess the darkness always fades eventually, if you let it. Maybe I should stop staring into it and look at what I can see. I understand now I'm not blind. I just have to try a bit harder to keep my eyes on what's ahead."

"So be it," said the mirror, "Then I, too, shall change."

The mirror cracked, breaking into a multitude of shards. They flew outward, toward me - no, past me. As I turned my head to follow the first of them, they formed a dome around me. But even once I was completely enclosed, the light never faded. In fact, it grew brighter, engulfing everything around me.

Ricardo was only halfway surprised by the small girl's commitment to press forward, but if she made it through similar trials as he, there truly was no reason to doubt her bravery.

Glancing back to her, at the sound of her last words, he noticed her feet. She was bare foot. Ahead lie hot coals that eventually turned into fire. Even if his feet could heal, the shoes would most definitely turn to molten rubber. Rubber might even fuse to his foot during the healing process. This in mind, he began taking off his shoes.

Just as he was removing his socks, a new face entered the room. He was a wirey blonde boy, and he didn't seem to have much to say. But Ricardo felt as if they shared a bond already, just as with the girl. They had all just went through similar trials. Instead of words, Ricardo simply gave a polite downward head nod and a respectful smile. He hoped that was enough of a greeting for the boy.

Ricardo then turned back to the archway. Forward he walked until he took his first barefooted steps on the hot coals. At first the pain was easily bearable, but after a few more steps it became harder to ignore.

On one step in particular, he was unable to step over and contort his body enough to miss a strand of barbed wire. It caught his pant leg and he had to pull hard to rip it free. He then paused. Ahead of him, the coals glew much hotter, and he knew that a few rips in his clothes was not all he would get from the barbed wire.

He wondered if the two could tell how much pain he was in at the moment. Though, they would find out for themselves shortly, assuming they weren't going to take the easy way out.

Onwards he walked.
