I could have said something about this earlier and given you a chance to add a personality before this moment but I feel strongly about providing complete character sheets and I have my doubts about a roleplayer who does not (yet) understand that.

And I personally feel strongly about not putting all my cards on the table and revealing everything there is to know about my character before the story even begins. If you picked up a book, and the author immediately tells you what kind of character each person is, how trustworthy they are, their ultimate goal... where's the fun in that? Where's the mystery? If I say he likes to backstab people, or has a strong sense of honor/selflessness... there won't be any surprise if he betrays the group or gives his life to save one of them. His personality is also going to be in back of the other players' minds when they have their characters' deal with him, and whether they are aware of it or not could affect their characters' behavior towards him... hence why I tend to avoid reading other people's personalities when I go through their sheets, in order to make my characters' interactions feel as genuine as possible.

Why do you need to know how the group members are going to mesh with each other? Isn't the entire premise supposed to be that a group of unaffiliated adventurers came together for an adventure? They don't know each other, and it's more fun to see their relationships develop as the story progresses, rather than be able to predict them before the characters are even introduced. Whether they all turn out to hate or befriend each other, it's a surprise. Now, if you're specifically looking for characters who will all get along, or all become bitter rivals, then that's something you should have said at the beginning. If you're simply looking for a diverse past, then enough information has already been shared through my character's appearance, backstory, and abilities, to make him significantly unique from everyone else.

And haven't you ever heard of the phrase "Show, don't tell"?

Honestly, in the personality section I straight-up told you I intended to reveal his personality over the roleplay, and it wasn't my preference to reveal it all in the character sheet. If it really was a dealbreaker, you could have told me that and I would have added it in. Instead you led me to believe I had a chance, and I hung around here checking out other characters and talking to people, and then you just rejected me. My refusal to initially fill out the personality section says nothing about what I'm like in a roleplay. You yourself said the character and bio were good except for that one section, which I would have filled out had you simply asked.

As for me not putting 'Marne' into my bio... I actually did read your rules when the thread first came out. Then I had to walk away from my computer to do other things, and by the time I got back it had slipped my mind. Maybe it's because I'm used to roleplaying in a small tight-knit community where everyone is familiar with each other so we have no need for rule-trapping like that, but it's been years since I actually came across one of those so I wasn't on lookout for it. But yeah, I did mess up there.

Anyways, this isn't meant to come across as a rant - just an explanation of why I did what I did, a defense of my roleplaying habits, and some counter-criticism.

I know I’m not an authority in this RP, but as one of the accepted players I feel the need to make my thoughts on this known. A role-play is not a book. It’s a collaborative project where a degree of trust needs to be established prior to the story being told and I agree with Hank [as much as I don’t like personality sections myself] that it can be an integral and important part of an application. A well-written and consistent personality speaks towards building that trust. Also, I completely detest the idea that I and the other players will use knowledge of characters (ie: metagaming) to influence an interaction. I’ve been writing for close to twenty years and I do not use out-of-game knowledge.

Hank likely is looking at character dynamics and chemistry to help him decide on what characters to accept for the party at large. It’s not that far out – GM’s employ this tactic all the time.

Your refusal to fill out the personality section actually says a lot. The GM included it in the sheet because he deemed it relevant and important. I don’t like writing paragraphs of information on a characterization before I’ve written them but I don’t ignore the field if the field is provided in the perquisite template. It is pretty poor foresight to presume that the section was unimportant and blaming Hank for it seems rather absurd to me.

While I think 14 is an early age to set out alone into the Northern wilderness, she *is* Bosmer after all, so again I would not consider this actual criticism.

I based this on my perspective that in most medieval-oriented fantasy / non-fantasy (and in part, some history) the age of adulthood was much sooner than it is in our contemporary cultures. I know you said it’s not really a critique but I feel like explaining that tidbit might be valuable. Thanks for your write-up, it is very valuable to me and I realize where I could've reinforced my descriptions better such as explaining the nord-elf aspect better. Thanks!

Oh yes, that much is true, but not every one of them had the conception of adulthood as living alone in the wilderness, either. Finding a job or getting married at that age is normal in the proper historical context, but more menial works (hunting, military) often took around during or after puberty. But as I said, I'm not sure how it'd apply to Bosmer, who are literally cannibal murder-elves, whom I imagine have apelike muscle density.

@PeikThanks, this along with @Hank's review clear some things up for me, at least the bits about her personality. Re-reading her sheet I get what you're saying and it's definitely something I can work on fixing up.

Same with her bio, though I'm a little iffy since Meg was meant to be a simple sort of person with a semi-normal life. I could try change some things around I suppose , for the future of course.

I was talking about race there - I doubt a 14 year old Breton has the same strength as a 14 year old Orc. Your genetics have quite a stake in shaping you in the world of Elder Scrolls.

@Stormflyx – Amidst all the grim and conveniently dressed character submissions, I personally appreciate a taste of haute couture. Raelynn, with her love of good looks, feels like a classic upstart Breton, and this is quite cohesive with her personality.

I like how the little waifish woman, while helpful, is also manipulative, spoiled and snobbish internally. As I’ve said with Vensor’s review, I like petty characters who mix good and bad tendencies together, and I think Raelynn’s personality is quite believable in that matter. Not everyone you work with is completely pleasant to work with, and Raelynn, with how she is, fits in with my paranoid, confirmation-bias fueled view; that everyone secretly looks down on one another and that mutual dislike triumphs over the entirety of society.

Now admittedly there is one thing I could view as a flaw in the biography – that being the inclusion of the Mages’ Guild, which disbanded after the Oblivion Crisis, although I do not believe that the Synod and the College of Whispers jointly overtook every outpost of this former institution as omnipresent replacements, and thus I’m willing to believe that the Daggerfall Mages’ Guild is just an offshoot of the original one that’s an independent organization. Aside from this, the biography is solid and her upbringing is consistent with her personality. It is lacking in twists and simple in execution, but these are not bad things. Raelynn has my approval.

Thank you my friend! I can definitely alter her bio to reflect this. My TES knowledge is not fully top notch so I'll admit I went on a limb with that one! Appreciate your thoughts on my character. I'm really looking forward to writing her.

Also, yes. She's very haute couture.

6. Raelynn Hawkford, @Stormflyx
No adventuring party is complete without a healer, eh? That's one of several reasons to accept Raelynn, but more important are reasons similar to what I wrote about Vensor; she's believably flawed. Her pampered upbringing and snooty nature lend themselves perfectly for suffering in the tragic conditions the party will undoubtedly find themselves in underground and I like how she's superficially sweet but secretly shrewd and a tad greedy. It's a refreshing change of pace from healers that do so out of a poorly-motivated sense of altruism and benevolence. Her temper is also a nice counterpoint to Hector's patience. All in all, I think she'll make a great addition to the party and I look forward to reading about her antics with the group.

Thank you for my critique, and for accepting me into the RP. It was 6:30am when I read it and I thought I hadn't made it until Ink gave me a nudge.. >///>

I'm really looking forward to this RP! Your first post gave me a lot to think about with my character - which is why I went in and added a little tid-bit in her Bio about her fear of fire and flames which I think will be an interesting little quirk....

@Altered Tundra – Kalthar, as Hank put it, feels somewhat disjointed, and this begins in his appearance. It sometimes repeats info and sometimes contradicts himself (an example, as petty as it might be, is his eye color – to my knowledge cerulean blue is much lighter than sapphire blue).

His personality similarly repeats itself and in some places I feel does not make much sense, especially when compared with his biography (his father is described as an honorable man – yet a heavily and violently abusive father and husband). Perhaps it is because we have different conceptions of honor but to me it feels self-contradictory.

The biography suffers from this flaw as well in my opinion. I like the somewhat saga-like manner in which his father and mother met, yet the fact that Kalthar’s mother was a hardened warrior who had defeated his father makes the fact that the man often abused him during marriage baseless. One would expect some sort of reaction from a woman; surely a pact has not devolved her to a shrinking violet. And the biggest flaw is, unless I’ve misread things, that one of timeline. The RP takes place in 4E 202, as the OOC post says, one year after the appearance of the Dragonborn. Yet somehow Kalthar leaves the Companions with the Dragonborn’s appearance and wanders Skyrim for ten years over the course of one year. Kalthar would require extensive reworking to have my approval and with the character limit, he loses my vote.
Peic

I am thankful for both yours and @Hank's criticisms. Trust me when I say they do not fall on deaf ears. When the second round of recruiting comes around, I will present a much better and cohesive sheet for you two. It is, as they say, if at first you do not succeed, try and try again.
