That would be Final Fantasy 8.

Or 6 if you want to count Gau.

@Fabricant451 The comparison was because it's a genre where a small number of decent games in the franchise has tricked the fanbase into buying a lot of shit.

Most of the games in the Final Fantasy series are decent, to the point where it was only up until 13 and 15 where people started turning because they're flakey fakes. Sonic had one good Genesis game and managed to convince people that its 3D games were good because of a fucking whale.

The Sonic comparison works better with the Atelier or Disgaea series but no one gives a fuck about those.

FF8 has a dog. You can name it. You can use it as a projectile weapon. I was saying Silver and the FF franchise already have a dog because FF8 has an actual dog. And FF6 has Gau who can copy the attack style of a dog and is basically a rabid dog boy. Kinda like Ruff in Dragon Quest 7 but he's an actual wolf/dog boy that was once an animal but got turned into a boy.

This is going to be a controversial pick for an underrated game; Duke Nukem Forever.

No, it's not a very good game, but it's not that bad. Like, people mention this in the same breath as Ride To Hell Retribution, Rogue Warrior, and Daikatana, but it is far, far better and more playable and functional than those and to compare them is just insulting.

I dont really want to debate the value of sonic games because I fucking hate sonic. But depending on who you talk to, a good chunk of people in the platforming community, think that sonic 1,2 and 3 were good games, and they like sonic colours and generations too. I hear a staggering amount of defense for the running parts of unleashed and a few weirdos liked Sonic CD too.

That's about 4-5 games on average that people say are good, with maybe one or two being argued as great.

A lot of final fantasy fans seem to gravitate to roughly the same number of games in the series, with being lukewarm or extremely critical to the rest. RPG fans in general seem to only like a couple of the games I've never heard a non-final fantasy RPG fan give any significat level of praise to 1,2,3,5,8,12,13,or any of the god awful spin offs. Its a tepid series with some standouts, sonic is a shit series with some standouts, comparison is close enough for me.

Rouge Warrior was fantastic if only for the overlay profane and anti communist dialogue.

Yeah, that number sitting somewhere along the lines of 10. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14. That's over half the games in the franchise and if we include non mainline games that number increases. Over half the games in the franchise are regarded well by the fanbase and even the diehards will defend shit like 2 and its actually broken systems. The fanbase is critical, yes, but being critical doesn't mean negative and the series is highly regarded outside of the fanbase - as in critically and commercially. Even Final Fantasy 13, the one most (wrong) people call the worst in the franchise got rave reviews.

RPG fans in general seem to only like a couple of the games I've never heard a non-final fantasy RPG fan give any significat level of praise to 1,2,3,5,8,12,13,or any of the god awful spin offs.

Then you should spend some more time on some RPG forums and communities because boy. There's a subset of RPG fans that hate FF just because it's popular so the numbers are wonky all the same.

Point is, the series was and pretty much still is the top of the ladder in terms of the genre and appeal. It's one of the landmark franchises in gaming because it's got far, far, far more decent entries in its history than bad ones.

Is this the Regina George defense?

People hate COD, GTA, Battlefield and Madden because they are popular too, and they sell good just like FF.

Yes no one is denying the appeal of the games, its the McDonalds of RPGs, a lot of people know it and purchase it, doesn't make half the mainline series any less tepid. I feel like 'decent' is misleading and setting the bar a little to low. I don't think any of the games outside of 2 and 13 are outright crap, but the non-great entries are really just average, enjoyable sometimes, kinda dull, if 1,3,5,8 and 12 didnt have the name final fantasy in the title they would be as throwaway as the Shin Megami spin offs (barring persona).

People hate COD and Madden because they have very minor changes from release to release, moreso in the case of Madden since COD players are divided if they like the Advanced Warfare style or the more classic style when it comes to mechanics and movement and such. But despite what it seems, COD is still a pretty well regarded franchise; it's just easy for someone to flex their 'real gamer cred' by saying fuck Call of Duty. Call of Duty 4 was basically the FF7 of modern first person shooters.

If I said half the mainline series was 'great' you'd have the same response gif anyway. Half the mainline series is great and the franchise is important to the world of video games as a whole, and I don't just mean FF7. You can't honestly claim that if 1 didn't have the name it would be throwaway because when 1 came out literally no one had heard of Final Fantasy and the game itself was like a revelation back in the 80s. It was one of the most influential games within the genre and helped popularize the genre as well. There's nothing throwaway about it unless someone plays it today and takes it only at surface value.

5 was popular back in the day too and it wasn't even widely available. 12 was widely acclaimed and was the first Final Fantasy game to get a perfect score in Famitsu. 8 followed in the footsteps of 7 and still managed to be accepted in its own right. If the games didn't have Final Fantasy in the title they probably would not have sold as well, no, but they'd still be as widely regarded. But the franchise has earned its name and place and recognition because it's one of the few franchises that has been consistently decent since its inception.

You can count on one hand the number of genuinely bad mainline FF games.

@Fabricant451 I'm not arguing popularity, I'm not even saying that final fantasy 1 wasn't a landmark. I'm hesitant to call it a total pioneer, as Phantasy Star literally was relased 2 days afterwards, and had a female lead character to boot. But much like Resident Evil 1 just becuase a game was 'important' doesn't necessarily make it great or even good. I honestly dont think FF games suck (apart from 2 and 13) but I do think a whole half of them are dull/kinda boring/average and the others are decent, with maybe one or two being truly great. Which is the case for basically every longer running RPG series.

12 was widely acclaimed and was the first Final Fantasy game to get a perfect score in Famitsu. .

Hahahahahahaha guess what else got a perfect score by famitsu?

I'm glad you've come around to seeing the light which is Japanese RPG reviews!

When it comes to FF the games which are argued as the best are 4 by the throwback people 7 by the widespread consumers 6 by the 7-sucks hipsters and maybe maybe maybe 10 by some of the slightly younger weeb-ish crowd, but I understand they are a minority.

None of these games, (apart from 7 due to the music, presentation, and my own heavy personal bias for this game) can even make the case for being a pimple on Chrono Trigger's ass.

And yes Persona 5 despite the weeb army and hype train is probably the best JRPG of this decade. Final Fantasy 15 was a good effort, but it's clearly not as amazing as it wanted to be.

EDIT: Oh and 14 is irrelevant, its a different genre. What makes a good MMO isn't necessarily what makes a good JRPG experience. That's like saying Donkey Kong is a better platforming series than Mario, because Diddy Kong Racing is better than Mario Kart 64 (which isn't saying much).

Underrated games:
Children of zodiarcs- I like card games generally and this game combine it with RPG element without being a big mess.
Fire emblem- Basically the GBA entries are less popular compare to 3DS games(which are awesome too). The story is simple but fit well into the gameplay and combat system. I don't think that it's the BEST franchise but it definitely deserves more love.

Overrated games:
Skyrim- This game make me realize that open world genre is really not my thing. Even with mods I still couldn't get myself into playing it for more than a week. Maybe I lack the creativity to play this RPG or whatsoever. And morrowind just isn't from my era so I couldn't feel the "groundbreaking" thing.

Witcher 3- Keep your fork away pls people. I am not saying that this is a bad game, but the player base itself overbloated this game to the extend where if I say I didn't like this game, I must be "sux gamer","casual and need to git gud". The dialogue is exhausting. I don't want to know the sad story of that monster I was hunting, not every tom dick and harry need to give me sobbing or inspiring story to keep me immerse. And the combat system is not as smooth as it should be.

Don't know where to put: My all time favourite, my guilty pleasure, my true love, the only game franchise that I always go back and replay and replay: Dynasty Warriors. I am not kidding when I say that I would take this game over any other AAA games. This game is legit my addiction. Its online MMORPG is one of the best combat system I've ever play and enjoy the most. SWTOR, Guild Wars or world of warcraft does not even come close to this franchise for me.

Oh yea, the snowboard one was cool with all those secret modes. I also liked the G-bike, and the roller coaster was the best one that wasn't recycled from the main game. Outside the gold saucer you have the fort condor one, which was pretty meh. And then you have the thirty or so other minigames that aren't much more interesting than the one I posted above. Doing squats, helping Tifa escape from a chair, mouth to mouth resuscitation, saving aries via donky kong style barrel throwing, bitch slap contest, every tedious timing minigame...

Final Fantasy seven was definitely ahead of it's time in a lot of ways, especially when you look at the games that came out at the same time as it. "Grand Theft Auto" and "Castlevania: Symphony of the night" were the only other blockbuster games I can think of that came out that year. It was the first Playstation game to come out on multiple disks, the story was far more complex than your typical console game, and it was very pretty compared to most 3d games of it's vintage. It's definitely a contender for best game of 1997, and it's probably the best RPG of that year. But it has no right showing up on any "greatest game of all time" lists. It's a generic turn based RPG with a ton of minigames thrown in to distract you from this fact. There have also been better stories, with "Aries dies!" being the only plot twist this bloated, long winded tale has to defend itself with.
