FF9 is perhaps my favourite, though I'm influenced by the fact that it was the first that I played. Gotta have that nostalgia value.I enjoyed 8 and 10 though, and I'm probably one of the few people in the world who actually enjoyed FFX-2. It was a fun non-linear experience, and it was interesting to go back and see what changed in Spira since the original game. Part of me often wondered how things would turn out after the game ended, and FFX-2 more or less allowed me to see that. FF8, FF9 and FF10 easily stand up as the three games in the franchise that left the biggest impact with me. Lot of halcyon memories of being in high school and playing through FF10.

This is where I probably detour the most from popular opinion: I played some of FF7 but it just didn't resonate with me, I couldn't get into it now matter how hard I tried to, which surprises me even today since I like the themes and aesthetics of FF7, the whole bleak cyberpunk future and all. Many would list FF7 as their favourite title of the PlayStation generation, though for me that accolade falls to Resident Evil 2.

Final Fantasy seven was definitely ahead of it's time in a lot of ways, especially when you look at the games that came out at the same time as it. "Grand Theft Auto" and "Castlevania: Symphony of the night" were the only other blockbuster games I can think of that came out that year. It was the first Playstation game to come out on multiple disks, the story was far more complex than your typical console game, and it was very pretty compared to most 3d games of it's vintage. It's definitely a contender for best game of 1997, and it's probably the best RPG of that year. But it has no right showing up on any "greatest game of all time" lists. It's a generic turn based RPG with a ton of minigames thrown in to distract you from this fact. There have also been better stories, with "Aries dies!" being the only plot twist this bloated, long winded tale has to defend itself with.

I think you make a lot of sound arguments here. But I despite it being 20 years old I can still see why the game belongs on a GOAT list.

It really depends on how you frame the GOAT discussion. First lets look at other games that are in that 'Best Ever' conversation.

Games like: Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Mario Bros 3, Half Life(2?), Street Fighter 2, Pokemon Red & Blue, Resident Evil 4 and Chrono Trigger to name a few.

Damn near all of these games are really old, and a lot of them apart from maybe Chrono Trigger really haven't aged that well (especially goldeneye jesus christ). But why do they make the list? Impact & Influence and widespread enjoy-ability I would have to say. FF7 is a fairly normal turn-based RPG with a cool materia gimmick, but mario 3 is a fairly normal platformer with a few cool item powerups, there is obviously something more to these games then just the surface attributes.

Speaking of Ocarina of Time in an overrated games thread;

Holy shitballs! This game did not cure cancer, people!

(Also, I don't find it fun at all but then I don't like Zelda much in general)

It didn't age well but it was great at the time. Also see Goldeneye N64.

I'm not talking about the view that it was good, and still is important, I'm taking about the ridiculously widespread opinion than it's still better than every other game ever

If anyone actually does think that, then I agree with you that its stupid. The game has a hell of a lot of flaws.

The backlash about a Wolfenstein game being about killing Nazis baffles me.

As if that's somehow a more political, Antifa shift away from the good old Wolfenstein where you....also killed Nazis...

Like, I remember the days of the real SJW, when it meant something and that something was 'horrible fucking person'. So horrible, in fact, that the current left-leaning POC-rights LBGT-rights feminist crowd now calls those people TERFs and thinks they're shitty, hate-filled people too.

SJW is a term that has lost all meaning.

Has anybody mentioned Five Nights at Freddy's yet?

It's not a bad game. It does what it sets out to do. Is scary and tense, and the dialogue and details in the checks and stuff builds this humorous, cynical universe where your employers don't care about you. The enemies are all well designed, have different mechanics and are memorable.

But if there's one thing you SHOULDN'T praise, FNAF fans, it's the story. It's a mess. In FNAF, it's simple and tight, then the second one happens and the story gets complicated and vague, but not in a Dark Souls way, in a "The fans are literally writing the fucking story for Scott because he can't even suss out whether the sequels are in the past or the future" way.

I actually forgot that game even existed. My brother was addicted to it before, but he suddenly stopped talking about it. I guess he moved on to TF2 now. First it was PvZ, then FNAF and now TF2.

So I know ff13 gets a lot of crtique backlash in the same way that something like 7 gets hype backlash. It seems enough time has passed that people have started saying ff13 is 'not that bad' or even 'pretty good'. This is because people have returned to the series with fresh eyes and have an immediate desire to go against the popular opinion especially in a series as old and well known as FF.

I'm sort of cheating here because I dont have the energy to detail all the problems with ff13 in one post. But I came across this video series critiquing every element of the game and if you are interested in this debate and dont mind long-form videos then maybe have a look.

Uncharted is underrated? You're kidding me, right? Also, Yuri is best girl.
