I've been keeping an eye out every so often on this thread. I'd like for this to come back, too, at some point

Reboot?

As much as I'd like to reboot this roleplay I'm afraid I've lost interest in it.

I apologize that I've been silent for so long but it's taken a lot of effort to work up the courage to admit that. When I started this roleplay I was really excited. I had a ton of ideas, a lot of mechanics I wanted to experiment with, and was really enthusiastic by the wonderful players who showed up. However my mechanics seemed to slow things down a bit, I didn't post as often as I should have and my direction for players really sucked.

And because of my failings the roleplay curled up and died.

I'm sorry that this happened everyone. I really appreciate the effort and engagement you all had, Agent, Majora, Red, and Draco.

I hope my failing here doesn't hurt your enthusiasm for role-playing or your opinion of me at all >_<

Nono, it's okay! I get it! I lost interest in one of my own rps, like a year ago.

But if it's not much trouble, maybe one of us can reboot this for you?

@Crosswire

That is understandable. it seemed like a hell of a lot of work to do.

question, would it be possible to have a peak at the tables if you still have them and it isn't to much of a bother to do so?

If any of you wish to reboot this yourselves and take a crack at it, be my guest. Though talking about all this kind of makes we want to try again...

@DracoLunaris
Sure. Here's the tables and notes I had on the game.

Borderland Gun Generator Sheet: Here's a specific table I made JUST for Borderland guns. It's a shame I never got to use this here, but if I ever do anything Borderland related I at least have something to work off.

General Item Sheet: Here is the list of all the general items that could have shown up in game.

Weapon Sheet: These are all the weapons that could have shown up in game. The Borderlands guns on the list would have been rolled more specifically on the Borderlands list I had.

General Notes and Misc Lists: Brainstorming notes I was writing up and keeping while the roleplay was in progress.

One of the things I was working on was a kind of money conversion chart. I was trying to establish what all the different currencies were worth in relation to one another for when you guys had shops open up in town or found them.

Now how I rolled for items worked like this. I would copy and paste one of the lists in a random selector program like this one and I would generate some results. Any results that didn't make sense for the situation, environment, or modifiers in place I would throw out and roll again. Basically the results were an element of randomness and my own judgement as the moderator.

@Crosswire
you put a hell of a lot of work into all this. it's impressive.

as for trying again, maybe we can brainstorm a way of adjusting the mechanics to reduce the slowdown?

@DracoLunaris I'd be up for that.

One issue I had was that the way I ran the roleplay players didn't have very much autonomy. I want to have a game with loot and neat events, but I don't want players to feel stuck or limited in their actions outside of what they do and do not have in regards to items and weapons.

The 'mission' setup was probably pretty bad on my part. As fun as it was making what amounted to a 'dungeon' it was a bit of a slog to get through and slowed things down quite a lot.

Another issue I think was responsible for the slow down was having to wait on me to determine loot results. I enjoyed writing the descriptions and I think the item-card setup I had was a good way of stream lining things. However the fact players were reliant on me and thus had to wait for me to determine what they found was a major slow down.

If players could somehow roll for themselves then I could provide the item cards afterwards. However the way I do rolling isn't exactly streamlined and there's always the potential a player could cheat or simply decide "Yeah finding this tesla cannon in this plant feeder makes sense."

What do you think?

My thoughts:

one thing that I think contributed to the slog is that Play by post doesn't really suit linear exploration. Having everyone do a post of "I go north" is a bit of a slog if north is the only way to go. on table top the decision to take everyone north takes like 5 seconds, where as here it takes a week of people posting basically the same thing.

I'd suggest focusing more on rooms if you use the dungeon rout. so like the raptor swamp and Russian camp are good examples of situations to be solved that everyone can get involved with somehow, either though discussion or action, where as the first areas of the bridge and forest where basically box ticking of "we search the one searchable area" or "we go forwards" which are both kinda busy work that only really the first few people can put a creative spin on.

it might be a good idea also have loot rolls be rewards for clearing encounters instead of environment interactions? or rather you could automate the searching of an area after it is made safe (with the danger passed you take some time to explore the area. X finds a rifle in a closet, Y finds some herbs growing outside, etc.) Which lets you pre-prepare the item rolls/descriptions while you are waiting on them to solve the area.

Co gms to help manage separate groups or assist in item rolling/description writing might also be helpful as if its only one person you can have them roll for others but not themselves and you can also have them run their rolls/posts past you for approval before it is permanently stamped on the IC tab.
