Except, in typical Morrison fashion, Damian isn't even his idea. It was Mike W. Barr's from the one-shot Son of the Demon. The only thing Morrison did was dress it up with a different name and he reaps all the credit... even though every element of Damian's backstory is clearly taken from Barr's work.

Added to that, Damian is a character whose defining attribute basically makes him completely stagnant. There is no character growth with him. He had a lot of potential for growth and development, and to echo what MB said ending Damian's run with the Heretic story was probably the best route for it.

tl;dr Morrison likes to steal from other writers and just re-package shit as though its completely original. Also, I will never forgive him for Cat-Beast.

See, I didn't know that first part. I always though Son of the Demon was Morrison.

Naw, I just didn't like the character. John Stewart is my Green Lantern and Static has always been a long time favourite character since the animated series.

I just hate Miles Morales.

John Stewart should be everyone's guy. Hal Jordan is interesting as lightly toasted white bread with no butter.

I like Hal in the animated stuff, especially when he's voiced by Captain Mal. And honestly as terrible as the movie was, Reynolds was enjoyable to watch as Hal.

I like the challenge of turning Hal into someone interesting in these games. But, yeah, in the comics he's mostly generic.

As for the movies, as much as I like Fillion's voice for him, I hate how these new animated films make him so lame. And the GL ring/powers they practically turn into a joke in those movies.

Madness, but that's fair since it's where he got popular lol. He shines in the current Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps run, anyone who is interested in learning more about him should read that.

I think Damian had potential beyond the finale he received with the Heretic story, but I can understand why a lot of readers really think it is a fitting end to the character. For me, it isn’t fulfilling. I actually enjoy the character when he is written correctly and has a good group of characters around him to challenge his point of view and organically come to terms that he isn’t as great as he thinks he is. Say what you want about how messy the current run of animated films are, but for what I can see the film writers have a better idea of how Damian can and should develop then the people who write for him in Teen Titans.

There’s glimpses of him fulfilling the “defrosting ice queen king” trope as he gets more comfortable and starts to change. The problem with the comics in handling that is they decide that whatever moral or ethical dilemma that Damian has learned from isn’t important enough to be a lesson Damian remembers or has affected him; he’s just there to be “edgy Robin with a katana who is perfect” forgetting the whole point that he isn’t perfect and that’s one of the reasons he’s being humanized in the first place.

But it is what it is, I guess.

Bounce is going to hate me, but I have never enjoyed Damian, nor found the brat redeeming in any way. To be fair, I have not read anything since Flashpoint for mainstream DC comics, so maybe he gets better, but I don't see it. Personally, never understood his appeal, and have always felt he's an unnecessary edition (not that Bruce having a child is unnecessary, but Damian and his characterization himself).

Not in the least. In the right setting, I'll write him as a character but I hate his portrayal in the comics. Like @Inkarnate mentioned, in DCAU has a better grasp on him... though even that's slipping (Justice League vs Teen Titans was horrible in terms of Damian's characterization).

There is nothing redeeming about the current Teen Titans, outside of Starfire is no longer a total slut.

Most things related to Gotham City are superfluous and unnecessary at this point, honestly.

I’m not quite sure when Damian started to appeal to me as a character, but the best way I can explain my interest with him is that the “defrosting ice king” and “asshole savant” are tropes I really find fun to read, watch, and play. He’s a character with very few redeeming traits from the onset that has a major hubris problem. It’s only until he’s put in the right environment, forced to learn that he is imperfect (and deal with it), make connections with actual people, and try to find a medium ground between his motivations and genuinely caring about others. Even with character development and life lessons Damian Wayne will always be coarse and that frigid asshole, but he can be that with layers and depth.

Yeah, though I am a little more forgiving on Justice League vs Teen Titans than you are. It has its issues no doubt, but I like that Damian actually learned something between his first animated film appearance and that film [and the one that immediately succeeded it]. The comics can go fuck themselves right now. Between making Garfield an unlikeable whiny coward to perpetuated the Damian-Can-Do-No-Wrong myth, I'd rather go read One More Day for several months straight.

The problem is, Damian never learns.

They'll wrap an arc up and it will look as though Damian has grown as a human being... and then by the next issue that's apocryphal and we're back to asshole ninja.

Which is exactly the problem with Teen Titans and Damian right now in the comics.

@Inkarnate

You mean outside of casting Garfield as the Deadpan Sniper?

The point at which Garfield was being a complete jerk-ass to Jon just completely cemented everything wrong with whatever they're calling Beast Boy now.

Oh well, at least he's the right color again.

I want a long-winded analysis about every era of comics and what you like about them in relation to Batman stories. Golden Age, Silver Age, all of it.
