Abigail Reese

Friday, June 1st. 11am

"I can do this."

Abigail Reese sat behind the wheel of an Audi A4, tapping her fingertips nervously along the edges of a black steering wheel, that phrase being repeated over and over in her head. Her small sedan, previously her mothers before the... accident, was packed to the brim with boxes and other miscellaneous items from her old apartment. Pulled into her childhood home driveway, Abigail had been trying to breathe through what was teetering on the verge of a full blown panic attack for the past 15 minutes.

The last time Abi had been at the house and had seen her siblings was a week ago, the day her father didn't return from his trip to the cemetery. She didn't think it would have been this hard to see the house again, her siblings, but it was shaking her to the core. Losing her mother had been enough, hadn't it? Why her father? Why, especially, her littlest sister? Why take them from her? She couldn't bear it. She couldn't. On top of it all, she had just been through yet another break up with her on-again, off-again boyfriend and to add the cherry on top, her birthday was tomorrow. 26 wasn't looking so good. God, if there was one, could be so cruel.

"I can do this."

She repeated, lying to herself, hoping she would eventually believe it. Blinking rapidly to clear any tears welling up in her deep emerald green eyes, Abi checked the sun visor mirror to make sure it didn't look like she had been bawling her eyes out for the past week straight. Once satisfied, taking in a deep breath, she finally found the courage to push open her car door with shaking hands. The day was bright, sunny, with barely a breeze. Something she would have typically enjoyed. These days, it felt like the whole world was mocking how dark she felt inside.

Figuring that her boxes could wait a few minutes, Abigail locked her car and walked up to the door. With every step it broke her heart, knowing how empty the house would feel without her father and sister Maya. Oh, how Maya use to love when her big sister would come to visit. Abigail bit her lower lip hard to keep herself from crying all over again.

Knock Knock Knock

Without waiting for an answer, Abigail tried the door handle. Somewhat surprisingly, it was open. This was something that would never have bothered her previously, but now... now that her family members were missing. Could they trust the neighborhood to leave it unlocked like this? Granted, this disappearance seemingly didn't happen here, but the whole town felt unnerving to her now. A kidnapper could be on the loose. Or worse...

Not wanting to think about it, Abigail stepped into the house.

"I'm home!" She announced to the household in as chipper a voice as she could. The fact that she didn't immediately hear Maya's little feet rushing down the hallway put a stab through her heart.

The house felt quiet, which was odd for a house filled with children. Her memories of this house had always been loud, and happy. This felt wrong. She began to wonder if she was stuck in another nightmare where she walked in to find that her entire family had been murdered, bodies left on the living room to bleed out.

"Anybody home?" She called, closing the front door behind her gently. Hearing only a few creaks upstairs, she began heading towards the kitchen. Their family typically liked to gather there. At least... when her parents were around. Someone was always cooking back then.

Friday. June 1st. 11 AM. Reese Residence.

There were only a few short hours each day that Demitri truly had to himself, especially now that he was suddenly made the head of the household. One might think that it being summer vacation would make things easier, but all that meant was that the kids didn’t get up as early. Once they were up, they still needed to be fed a decent meal, and instead of being bussed off to school, they had to be entertained at home or elsewhere. This was the hardest part for Demi — making sure they were content and cared for in these tough times, all the while not bothering to care for himself.

School might be out for the younger Reese children, but that wasn’t the case for Demitri. When he lost his mother earlier in the semester, he had taken it incredibly hard, and the emotional turmoil impacted his school work. Upon recommendation from his academic advisor, Demi lightened his course load. There is always summer session, as his advisor suggested. Summer session was here now, and Demitri was enrolled in the junior level basic operations management class that he had dropped during the spring semester. Now that is was summer, and yet another tragedy had struck the family, Demi was looking back and wishing that he hadn’t been such a pussy before, then he’d have more time to be with his loved ones now. Hindsight is always twenty-twenty, as they say.

The other Reese’s had found things to do, so Demitri had retired to his old childhood room for the few hours before class. Demi sat glaring at the screen of his laptop, which was on an old wooden desk beside a steaming mug of jet black coffee. Caffeine and angst were the only things keeping him upright these days. He hadn’t had a proper night’s sleep in over a week, and it was beginning to show. Not that process mapping and supply chain management were ever the most interesting topics, but the words were beginning to blur together as his eyelids drooped.

There was something almost hypnotic in the ticking of the clock on the wall. Tick tock. There was going to be a quiz today. Tick tock. He needed to study. Tick tock. Just take a sip of coffee and power through. Tick tock. Maybe five minutes won’t hurt. Tick tock. Just a little nap…

Demitri startled awake to the sound of the front door opening. Paranoid and on high alert, as he had been for days on end, Demi stood up and frantically scanned the room for the nearest weapon. The basball bat was behind the front door, bloody lot of good that was doing him since the intruder just walked right in. Which one of his siblings left the door unlocked? Demi’s money was on Robin, he wore his carelessness like it was armor. Stubborn little shit. Demitri settled on the letter opener, it was sharp enough to stab someone with… probably.

The redhead crept quietly down the hall towards the front room, gripping the letter opener tight in his right hand. He rounded the corner just as his older sister called out to see if anyone was home. His grip loosened and his shoulders relaxed as a flood of relief ran through him, you could practically breathe in the waves of anxiety leaving his body.

“Abi. Hi.” He greeted shortly, clearly still in shock. Demi kept the hand holding the letter opener slightly behind his back. “I wasn’t expecting you.” His disheveled clothing and unkempt hair, which hadn’t seen a shower in just as long as he hadn’t slept, made it clear that Demitri wasn’t expecting anyone. He was usually so well put together, stylish, even. The man who stood before her wasn’t the brother she grew up with. “Can I get you something to eat?” But parts of him were still there.

This sucked.

It was the worst possible way to make money, there had to be a better way to do this. As far as Megara could tell though, the labor laws of this state, even this country, were firmly stacked against child labor. It was no good, not for her. She needed eight hundred, and ninety eight dollars, and thirty seven cents. How was she supposed to get that much money? It was a meteoric sum, at least to someone her age. She didn’t even know if she’d ever seen that much money in one place before! Was it even legal to carry almost nine hundred dollars around!?

She just wanted trading cards. Little pieces of cardboard with images printed on them, but noooo. It had to be expensive. “Why does everything cost money?!” Megara demanded, though her voice wasn’t met with an answer. She was almost falling in this dumpster, but she ultimately succeeded in her task, and grabbed the empty soda can from the bottom of it, and pulled it before tossing it into the trash bag she had. “Okay, if each one of these is worth a nickel, before taxes and stuff… then I need something like eighteen thousand of them to buy my deck? This whole town doesn’t drink that much soda!”

To Megara’s credit, her morning had not been wasted. She’d been out since around seven that morning, riding her bike around the town of Millington, and stuffing cans into her bag, and it was about half full. By her reckoning, she had about fifty five in the bag now. ...wait. Had she locked the door when she left? ...eh, didn’t matter. Her siblings were grown adults, they could take care of themselves.

“Stupid money.” She grumbled as she threw her legs over the bicycle and adjusted her headphones, before she began pedaling. It was breakfast time at the house by now, and besides, she’d made the important stop of the day, and had collected a few of her money makers along the way. While the trash bag hung off of one of her handlebars, the document that needed the signature of an adult was in her backpack. Once she convinced Demi or Robin — both of whom were adults! — to sign the paper, she could be a paper girl. That certainly paid better than this whole ‘collecting cans’ thing. Even if she had the piece of paper to deliver papers (ha), she needed to make sure she worked on plan b: collect a bunch of soda cans. There was the chance that Demi refused, and it was hard to talk to Robin for long periods of time; he was stinky.

Why couldn’t more people in the neighborhood need babysitting? That was an easy way to make a bunch of money. But noooo, the only one was Ana, and she had a full time nanny or whatever. Meg just wanted her money! She was willing to trade her time, for money! Didn’t adults like that?

If her father was around, she could have asked him or Demi for some money, a little bit at a time, until she’d met her goal. But her father was gone. The adults suspected he’d been kidnapped, but that made no sense to her. If someone asked her (no one ever did), her father had just abandoned them. It was that easy. There was no need for the whole search, or the detective, or any of that crap. Dad just abandoned them.

He had a pilot’s license, by now he could have been in Siberia and they’d never know the difference.

She didn’t understand why that was so hard for people to accept. He took the baby and ran, because mom’s death drove him crazy. Made sense to her.

Megara abandoned her bicycle and the trashbag in the front yard, near the sedan she recognized as her sister’s, and approached the door. With her housekey pulled out, Megara reached for the doorknob… and found it left open, unlocked and inviting to intruders. Tut-tut. “ABIGAIL! YOU LEFT THE DOOR UNLOCKED!” she yelled, kicking her shoes off as she wandered through the walls and toward the kitchen. “Demi! Are you awake!? I need you to sign this paper!”

Friday. June 1st.
Nearing the kids' lunchtime at the Dawson estate.

A rare sight in the morning: Ms. Dawson still in her nightgown and at home. In thirty minutes, the nanny would ring a bell calling her children to the patio for lunch. They were in the backyard playing cops and robbers with each other, where Phoebe was undoubtedly the bad guy, while Charles tried to protect the prized item, which was a stuffed animal that Maya had forgotten here, two weeks ago. The matriarch of the household would have to visit the Reese kids and return it, but for now, Charles was missing his buddy cop. They were a team in catching the unstoppable villain, his sister, so... he didn't necessarily want to give the plushie back to anyone. Not even to his mother.

Has she explained to her children that they may never see their friend again? Absolutely not. In their little minds, at least she hoped they believed her, Mr. Reese and Maya went on vacation. A white lie. Yes. But, she wasn't ready to break their hearts. It's only been a week since they've gone missing, but having been exposed to the worst crimes because of her field, Annabel looked at the incident with skepticism. Who knows? Maybe, just maybe, Roderick and Maya weren't dead. Maybe, just maybe, they would return today out of the blue. Maybe, just maybe, this wouldn't be something added to the paper. Another note-worthy, unfortunate story, about the loss of good people, in this small, cursed town.

Sitting in her lounge area within her office, a porcelain cup filled to the brim with hot, hibiscus tea in hand, Ana took another deep sip, as she glanced down looking at an open manila folder with documents from her most recent closed case. Reviewing one of many tough cases she's fought. She, always up for a challenge, defended a minor who fatally shot his police officer father. He couldn't stand the abuse and continuously told her 'he's better off dead'. So, she had to prove to the court this boy wasn't a sociopath. After some strategy and some help from her colleague in California, at first the case not looking promising at all for her and her team, she was able to convince the D.A. that the jury had been tampered with, which led to the judge declaring a mistrial. Her client was no longer seen as a sociopath and his case was kicked to juvenille court. An honest win for the severity of this case.

Her team, depending on availability, would be considered small compared to Wall Street's notorious law firms. Really, they were her friends from law school that assist her with her workload. Her and two other attorneys, one located on the outskirts of the town, as Millington's district attorney, and the other located in Los Angeles, each with their own reputation of being ruthlessly good at what they do. Griffon Cohen (see male picture above) and Elizabeth Savage. They both have two paralegals, one legal secretary, one record clerk, and one book keeper in their designated locations. Griffon, as DA, also has a couple of assistants to represent him.

His ADAs work around the clock and do behind-the-scenes casework for both him (for the state) and Annabel (for wherever her clients are located). Griffon appoints his other staff members to her as well, since those who want to pursue law in Millington aren't many and as much as Ana would love to be a superhero and close cases with super intelligence, she needs the help. Every attorney needs help. Their workplace, however, is with him, since Ana prefers her home office over anywhere else. She does have a room available for her with him if she ever wants to... 'get away'. One can say they have history, making their relationship fairly unique both professionally and personally.

Ana had gotten back from California two days after Roderick and the youngest Reese child went missing and since then she's been out of sorts. A profession like her's took strength, especially mentally and emotionally. Yet, that wasn't why her A-game was downgraded to 'hot mess'. Ophelia Reese's death had already taken a toll on her, but as cold as this may have come across, she kept trudging onward, acting like she wasn't affected by one of her best friend's suicides. That happened only this past February. Something she could've prevented if she was around, but work, as always, came first. On top of that grief, she couldn't help but pity Ophelia's children. Those poor children learning to live with such loss have to now accept that their father and baby sister may have joined their mother.

After letting a heavy sigh escape her lips, she placed her glass down onto the table and pressed the button on her landline that would play her voicemails. She had three missed calls. The first one was from none other than her old flame, before she married NO-NAME. Dear Griffon. Honestly, she didn't know what she'd do without him. He and Eliza were the main reason she had such a strong clientele, since they referred people to her all the time. Her melting chocolate eyes deeply stared into the red liquid listening to the man's modulated and serious voice: "I'm not going to take up much of your time, but I do need you to listen to me. For once, don't be stubborn. Please know, I only say this because I care — Ana, due to recent events, you should temporarily close your firm to focus on your health. You've recently decided to do seminars at MU. Add that, with your usual workload, the fact that you are a mother, and what you must be going through, I demand that you take care of YOU. I will not allow any of my staff to help with your next case if you deliberately disobey my orders. Send me your clientele list and a formal letter addressing your sabbatical. Eliza and I will make sure your clients are well taken care of. Do remember, I am here for you if you need to talk. Never hesitate in calling, give the Reese's my condolences, and some time today you will be receiving flowers to ease your worry. Take care and don't take my kindness for granted." Click.

With furrowed eyebrows, Ana went from looking at her tea to glaring at her phone. Who was he to tell her to not work?! Well, she did have plenty of money saved up, but still! Work kept her busy. Without work, she would be left to her own thoughts. Her mind wasn't the safest place for her. Why would she want an open schedule to have more time to THINK? He acted like he knew her! Like he knew she wasn't doing alright!

Before she could grab the phone to dial his number and start giving him a hissy fit, the next voicemail played. It was her sister, Lyla, five years younger than her, and a decently successful fashion journalist in NYC.

"Hey Ana-banana, so.... Griffon called me." That bastard. "Y'know it's the summer and you and the little rascals could always come to the east coast. A lot's happening in Millington so the offer is on the table. I wish I could come, but you already know how sick mom is. If not for the whole summer, consider a week. Take a break!" There was a pause from the chipper woman's voice, before she continued, letting out a hopeless laugh, "I already know how you would respond. You're so predictable. 'Phoebe and Charles are experiencing enough change right now, I can't possibly overwhelm them anymore than they already are!'
Am I right, or amiright?"

Ana rolled her eyes at her sister's assumption, which was... true, but whatever. "Okay, okay. I'm done teasing. Still, you need to not work so much. Those kids already don't see their father often, if at all, because of the divorce terms. You don't want them to grow up feeling empty. Stop working and spend time with them. They need you." Unfortunately so. Ana didn't think she was a very good mother. "Now, enough about you, here's a quick update—" The voicemail cut her sister's voice and started playing the next one.

"Ooops! I hung up. My bad. Like I was saying. Enough about you, guess what? Me and Lou broke up, again. This time I'm totally done with him. He's a fucking ass and I can't believe why I gave him another chance. It's so dumb, really. It's like why the hell do I let some pretentious turd define me as a woman. I should be like you and just not give men the time of day. Unless they're like Griff, who you totally don't give! He's still so in love with you." False. Ana wasn't opposed to dating, she just hasn't found someone who understood her. Truly and deeply. She also wasn't opposed to casually browsing. As for Griff, he was an old flame and she preferred his friendship over the prospect of them as a romantic couple. He was kind of a whore. "Well, whatever. Ugh, Lou makes me so angry. Should I call him and bitch him out? I probably should call him and bitch him out. Imma' do it." Of course she will. "Say hi to my babies. Tell them Auntie loves them very much and that we will chat soon!" By now, Ana had mentally checked out. Her sister was insufferable. "Keep me updated, okay? I'm not going to tell mom what's happening... I still haven't even told her about Ophelia. OH! And you should just marry Griffon. You're not getting any younger. Okay, love you! Byeeeeeeee." Click.

As if on cue, Ana's doorbell rang. She was still in her pajamas... "That must be the flowers."

I think I'll give it to them... Standing up, Ana gracefully glided to her window, peering through the curtain and looking at the house ahead. She seriously needed to get dress. Why wasn't she dressed, anyways?

Friday, June 1st. 11:30am

The warm sunlight traced across the concrete slab that was formed the floor of the garage. As the sun had climbed the middle aged man sitting in his garage let the sunshine warm his legs through his work jeans. Really he should have gone into work but that hadn’t quite happened. With a slow tap he worked an amber glass bottle up and down the length of the plastic arm of the chair he had erected in his garage.

It was a slow day, the kind of languid day that made him thankful that he was somewhere that would become home. Eventually.

It amazed him that this was the same sun that had turned his skin to blister and battered at him like the fist of an angry God. Here. Here it was soft and warm like Helen had once been. Another drink from the bottle fought the memory back. The man hated drinking to fight back the memories but it did help. Turning over his shoulder her peered back at the lathe that took up much of the garage. It had sat silent since he had moved it in but it wouldn't remain so for long.
The sound of a car pulling into the driveway next to his pulled him out of his thoughts. Standing he walked to the open garage door and looked out. There was a blonde in her car sitting in the driveway. Mort watched as she sat there...and...sat there. Frowning Mort took another drink. After several minutes of the behavior she finally got out and went inside.

A Reese child. Funny enough it turned out the Reese family was something of a pillar in Millington. Apparently he’d actually met their parents years ago, his uncle had a picture with him and them in it. It was somewhere in with all of things he’d packed out of his uncle's office. As he stood contemplating another of the Reese children returned and went tearing into the house. Pursing his lips he finished the cider and tossed it into the recycling bin in his garage.

The summer was just starting so no doubt they would all be in and out. It was really a shame about their parents. With the death of Ophelia Reese the family had crumbled and then taken at turn for the absolute worst with their father and youngest child vanishing. With another heavy sigh he looked over at the car sitting in his driveway. 1967 Chevy Impala, it wasn’t even close to being in working order but he needed a project and this was it for the summer. Hopefully it would be done by the middle of July. An inventory of the car had revealed the parts he needed to order. Mort had ordered them two weeks ago and they were still sitting untouched in the garage.

Wrinkling his nose he finally made up his mind to do something with the day since it was clear her had no intention of making it into Millington Mechanics today. Rudy would be fine running the shop for the day. The older overweight gentleman had worked for Alexander when his uncle had run the shop and had been happy for the work when Mort had reopened the shop. Turning to collect his rolling tool box and rolling board he kicked the backboard to the front of the guided the tool chest over to it. Rolling up his sleeves he popped the hood of the car and leaned into it to start working. Not twenty minutes later the sound of a car approaching cause him to poke his head out from under the hood to peer like a nosey neighbor. The town was getting to him it was all too clear. Flower delivery? and at the lawyer's house too. Despite having been in the town for some time he had rarely actually seen the middle aged blonde mother who was Millington’s star Council. After a few seconds of pondering he went back to trying to get a hose off of the engine block to replace it.

"What was that for?"

"Cause I love you." A video played on the computer monitor of Marcus vlogging in the mostly empty house but at his feet was Maya hugging him just because she could. "I love you too, Maya. But do you know who else loves you?" A bright beaming smile shown on the child's face as she asked "Who?"

"The Tickle Monster!" From that point on the video was mostly Marcus playing with Maya. But about two minutes before the end the happy music and footage faded away to Marcus sitting alone with dreary music in the background. "Hey, Markers. Sorry, that I haven't posted anything in a while. I haven't been able to bring myself to post this and keep retrying. This is the third time. Umm, Most of you know what happened with my mother but two days ago something happened. No one knows for sure what happened but my dad and Maya went missing. Please. If anyone knows where they are or have seen them please reach out. This will be my last video for a while so stay strong everyone and make your Mark on the world." The video ended with a picture of Maya and Roderick.

Marcus stared at the unlisted video. He needed to update it before posting it if he ever was going to. Each morning he sat at his computer staring at it trying to force himself to post it for the past few days. He looked at the teddy bear and broken picture frame of his dad sitting beside his computer almost asking the inanimate objects what to do. Would people even understand his plight if he uploaded the video? Would anyone care or would his detractors just use this as fodder to verbally assault him or his dad? Marcus knew full well what kind of assumptions the internet would make about his father as he had done the same as indicated by the broken picture frame. Why did his head have to think of the worst possibilities?

Marcus was broken out of his reverie by the loud thumping on the floor above him. Being in the basement was a pain in that he could tell when Meg was awake or someone was mad. But it was easier to keep from bothering his siblings this way. As well as less money needing to be spent on soundproofing foam. The teen looked at the time and realized he hadn't gone to sleep last night. He probably should fix that but sleeping now would just get in the way of his day. He would just pretend to have just woken up.

Before joining his family, well the ones who hadn't left him yet, Marcus went to his mirror. He ruffled his hair and scrunched up his t-shirt. Now unless they looked real close they wouldn't know he hadn't slept and maybe he could avoid getting scolded again. Marcus climbed the stairs hearing his younger sister yelling something about a signature. Whatever it was he hoped she would at least stop yelling. He guessed that everyone that was awake would probably be in the kitchen so he may as well get in his daily quota of family interaction. Seeing the two oldest Reese's Marcus turned to the quote-unquote leaders of the Reese clan asking, "What's on the agenda for today?"

Friday, June 1 | En route to Oasi Pizza | 11am

"Look, I promise, I'm like--" A break as she stopped suddenly, barely keeping herself from muttering some choice words. Bad plan when you were on the phone with your coworkers. Headset on, luckily. Hadn't quite stooped to actually holding the phone while she drove; at least not too often. Sometimes she forgot things, but that didn't count. "Three minutes away, max. That barely counts as late."

Sandy needed to start checking when her shifts were before she did anything else. She'd barely had time to get home, note a few things down, and shower before heading right back out; her hair was a mess, uniform slightly crumpled - forgot to iron the damn thing again - and she generally didn't look all that ready to work. Lucky it suited her, she guessed, and her cap covered up the worst of the birds' nest on her head. Next best thing to actually being put together was making your scruffiness seem deliberate, and that, Sandy could do. It was a talent.

Or at least calling it that made her feel better. Whatever worked, right? Right!

Man, she really wanted to nap. Not the safest state to be in while she drove into town, but whatever. Hadn't killed her yet, and that was good enough for her. It wasn't the riskiest thing she'd ever done - not even the riskiest things got weekly, really. You couldn't go worrying about that stuff or you'd never do anything.

Completely untrue. But hey, live fast die young. Saved you a lot of stress if you didn't worry so much about consequences when you didn't need to, plus you got things done. The more you worried, the more likely you were to pass up on things or miss a trick while you wondered if it was a good idea. Good idea or not, what she knew was that thinking too hard on it was a waste of time. So here she was, making her way into work. Not too late.

Lucky she was likeable, and the boss was understanding of her situation. Most people would've fired her by now, and it was nice to have a regular-ish job to keep money coming in. She had rent to pay, after all. Like most people. Parking haphazardly outside, she practically leapt off of her bike, locking it up quickly and dashing around the back. Where was she? Front of house, right. Until they needed her out on delivery. Which happened surprisingly often for the morning.

The joys of summer, she guessed.

Shouldering her rucksack, she pushed her way inside, quickly dumping the bag - padlocked shut, for privacy's sake - in the storage cupboard before heading into the kitchen. Boss wasn't here yet, and thank goodness for that. She could pass her appearance off as just being her usual frazzled self. All good. Totally good.

"Hey, people. Ya miss me?" Bright-toothed smile, a cheerfulness that seemed infectious. There was a good reason she was meant to be dealing with customers all the time, after all. Even if some of her coworkers didn't seem to appreciate it quite as much, judging by the scowl that the dishwasher shot her. He'd never liked her, but he wasn't gonna be here for long anyway. Summer job, right?

"Sure missed peace and quiet."

Yeah. He always mumbled like he didn't think she could hear him fine well. According to what she'd managed to pick up, her cheerfulness apparently got grating fast when you were stuck in this place, and peppiness was out of place at best with some people right now, but...

Look, she got it. And it sucked, what was happening with that family - she could see their place from where she stood at the counter, waiting for people to show up - but you couldn't have a whole town mourning forever. People missing shook her up as much as anyone, not like she lived in the safest part of town. Even when she wasn't in her apartment, all her wandering probably put her at risk, technically, so she got why they were all on edge.

But Sandy wasn't willing to put her life on hold or keep her head down for every tragedy in life. Idly whistling, she stood at the counter, waiting for a call or a customer to come in. The excitement never ended around here, that was certain.

Whether that thought was sarcasm or not, even she wasn't quite sure.

Eventually, directly interacting with Mr. Ward @Themerlinhawk
& his siblings, particularly Abi @The Muse

Intoxicating. Addicting. Choking. Where most people would smell stench, Robin Reese smelt comfort. Such an unsavory smell smoke had that he absolutely couldn't get enough of. Most people hated it, which made it that more enjoyable. His window was open to air out his room, but by now, all his belongings, as well as himself, were past the point of no return. No Febreze could ever cover up years of cancer. He loved it and no one cared enough to stop him, so fuck it. He'll die happy. That's all they could ask for. To die happy.

As overwhelming as the smoke was that he's grown accustomed to, it was nothing like the burn that lingered in his throat. That's what he craved. That's what he needed. That's why he smoked. That burn. His sexual pleasure because he didn't get any. Leaning against his backboard, dressed in his work clothes, with red converse on (yes, on his bed), for his afternoon shift at the family restaurant, the black sheep of the family sucked the Lucky Strike deep into his lungs. He let its purpose seep into every fiber of his being. The craving that was never fully satisfied. Something he could relate to on a spiritual level.

Satisfaction was subjective and only obtained when people were content where they were. He was neither content or in need to gain anything. While the cigarette dangled in his scrawny fingers, Robin acknowledged his state of mind which was pure stagnation. Nothing to be proud about when you don't see a point in doing anything worthwhile, but he was young and the nicotine was good enough for him. If his mother didn't see a point in moving forward, why should he?

Tsk.

Peaceful and in the zone. His zone. Smoke trailed out his lips gradually and effortlessly. What time was it anyways...? Didn't matter. Even if he missed his shift, his older siblings would make sure they found someone to cover for him. Life was good. All he had to do was say he was having a hard time. They couldn't fault him for that. Their family was tragically miserable. It was truly affecting his day-to-day life. How would he ever function?

Sighing to himself, enjoying his mental sarcasm, Robin continued down the path of contemplation. Life was good. No parent to tell him what to do. No baby sister to make him feel bad about smoking. No responsibilities. Glancing up at the ceiling, his distant, green gaze emptily gawked at the white canvas that was before him. His hand that held the cigarette gingerly went to the soda can on his nightstand. The ash sprinkled across the top of the can, until he smashed the stick, crushing it, and inevitably releasing it into the abyss that was the can's insides.

Tragic how fast these moments pass him by. Reminded him much of his childhood. Years and years of forgotten memories. The bad glared out more than the good. Memories. Why couldn't they make their own? The only good that ever came into his mind was a face of a woman that gave up on him. His mother's face, her tender, meek smile, came and went as it pleased. She fooled everyone. The biggest liar award goes to none other than Ophelia Reese. She made the world believe she was strong, but really... she...

That same welcoming, loving woman, whose smile was like sunlight in his mind shifted where her face turned ugly, as she sobbed profusely, collapsing onto the floor before him. Begging for all the weight in the world to be lifted off her shoulders. "Ma —" The image of her so vivid, like it was only yesterday. She was like glass and if he reached for her, she would surely break.

"— Ah, fuck."

His mind was ripped out of his memories when he heard Meg: “ABIGAIL! YOU LEFT THE DOOR UNLOCKED!”

Rolling off his bed, and bringing himself to a standing position, Robin traced his fingers through his hair, "That's my cue." Without delay, he went to his desk and grabbed the backpack off the chair. Opening it quickly, he made sure he had everything he needed. Oh, one more thing. He grabbed a frame lying on his desk that he recently filled with a new printed picture. After wrapping it with a small hand towel, he placed it in his bag.

He was just about ready, so he made his way to his window. Part of him was tempted to bring a hoodie, but he was already wearing a long blouse for work. Dumb. Whatever. He was wasting time. With his already open window, rarely does he ever close it because of the smell, Robin recklessly tossed the backpack and it plopped onto the grass. Hence, the hand towel. They didn't have vines in the front of their house, but they did have a tree where he could.... Robin leaned out of his window, reaching for the closest branch. If he were any smaller, this could end terribly. Climbing out of his window, he threw himself onto the tree, tightly grasping the wooden arm, letting himself swing for a bit. Robin glanced over to the mechanic. "Sup, dude." before dropping to the ground.

He did parkour, bitch.

At last, it was time to avoid his family entirely, the rebel without a cause grabbed the backpack off the ground and his skateboard that was planted in a bush. Making his way to the street, he dropped the board onto the road, threw his bag over one of his shoulders, and waved at his friendly neighbor. Might as well be friendly back. "Bye, dude." To announce that Robin has left the building, he acted like he was going in his sister's car, by first loudly slapping the hood, appreciating its nice paint job, and then trying to open the door, but only for one reason.

To set the alarm off.

"See you fuckers later!" Putting his foot on the board, he kicked off, "Nice wheels, Abi-Abi! Better take good care of it!" Protecting it from people like him who wouldn't have mind dropping out of his window onto her hood. That's just how Robin rolled. Respect, my dude. What was that?

The blonde nineteen year old sped to his next destination, his mother's grave, disappearing in the distance.

Now that's how you make an exit.

Levi Brooks

BZZZZZZT.....BZZZZZZT.....BZZZZZZT

Face down on the edge of his pillow, drooling from the corner of his mouth, Levi Brooks slept peacefully for the first time in what had felt like an eternity. His body, dressed in only boxer shorts, laid in the middle of his blanket-less bed surrounded by several crime books. A few on psychology, a few on a variety of case studies. On the nightstand beside him; several empty beer cans, an ashtray filled with cigarettes, the nearly empty carton, and one list of possible suspects.

Finally at peace, sleeping. No dreams, no nightmares. Just silence, darkness, a mind at rest. Oh, how sweet it was. Something he had certainly taken for granted as a child. What was it like when he was able to sleep more than 4 hours? There had been days in his teenage years that he had slept for 11 hours straight!

BZZZZZZT

Levi suddenly jolted awake, blue bloodshot eyes snapping open just as he fell off the edge of his bed with a loud THUD.

"SHIT!"

He sat up from the ground, rubbing the back of his head which had smacked against his work boots on the way down. "What the hell...." He groaned, his voice gruff as he pulled himself to his feet. He looked in the direction of the buzzing which had so rudely interrupted his slumber and scared him half to death. Seemingly, the damned phone had buzzed itself around the bed until it eventually settled close to his face, which immediately began vibrating along the bridge of his nose.

He sighed at the name scrolling across the phone screen. CAMPBELL.

Clearing his throat, he picked up the phone and tried his best to sound like he'd been awake for hours. "What's up Campbell?"

"Ah, so you've finally decided to wake the hell up, eh Brooks?" The deep voice on the other end belonged to William Campbell, Millington's own Chief of Police. In other words, Levi's boss.

"I didn't-"

"I've called you four times, you little shit."

"I was-"

"Would you just shut up and listen for one god dang second? Your generation, I swear... It's about the Reese case. We got a new lead in." The line went silent for awhile, Campbell clearly enjoying the suspense.

"And? Are you going to tell me what it was?"

"Ha! Get your ass in the office. I'll tell you here."

Levi sighed, running a hand through his tousled hair and surveying the chaos of his bedroom. "Fine. Give me two hours."

"Two hours?! What are you gonna do, go grocery shopping?"

Levi hung up and tossed his phone back on the bed. William Campbell was two decades his senior, a fire cracker who loved to bust everyone's ass, but he was a softy on the inside and Levi knew it. After working with him all these years, the two often acted more like siblings than coworkers.

"I must've only been out for an hour at most.." He thought, eyeing the still lit cigarette sitting in his ashtray. Definitely not something the fire department would recommend. He had spent all night reading up on other kidnapping cases, murders, and anything he could get his hands on that could even slightly relate to the Reese case. He'd even made a list of possible suspects to interview in town. They hadn't made much progress since the initial disappearance, but the case was beginning to consume Levi. This one was a little closer to home for him, as he often enjoyed breakfast and lunches at the Reese diner. That, and their father belonged to the police force himself. Levi, much like the rest of his department, knew Roderick personally. They weren't best friends by any means, but Levi did consider Roderick a friend. He was a real stand up guy.

Speaking of which, he needed to get himself cleaned up and head into town for his morning coffee routine at that very diner.

12pm

After his 30 minute drive from his house in the countryside, all cleaned up, Levi pulled his car into the parking lot of the Queen's Orchid. "Looks empty..." He thought, noting the open parking lot with only a car or two parked. Either the Reese disappearance had been bad for business or...

CLOSED.

A big, handwritten sign hung smack dab in the middle of the diners front door. Underneath it, an explanation.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience! With recent events, we have taken the day off. We'll be back tomorrow! See you then! Mention that you came by today and we'll give you a discount for the trouble!

The note gently tugged at his heart strings, wondering what sort of thing must have been going through the mind of the person who wrote it. How awful to have to pretend to be so happy, as if nothing was wrong, when your whole life was falling apart within the span of a few months.

Of course, he was happy they had finally taken a day off. The eldest, who had been running the place, had looked so disheveled the past couple days he had seen her. She was always smiling at him and being positive, but anyone could see the pain behind her eyes. It didn't take a detective to figure that one out. However... now he was left without his favorite coffee spot. Would he be reduced to getting coffee from a Starbucks? $8 for a coffee seemed ridiculous.

"Am I turning into Campbell?"

Casper James

___________________

Friday, June 1st.

"Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hm. That late? Well, I guess you won't get any dinner," Casper said, as if dinner was something important instead of a generic brand of spaghetti with no sauce.

Ian was going to be having a late night, it seemed. Ian had woken up early to get to his shift at the hospital, a short shift, but on the other hand, he also had class in the afternoon. It looked like he wouldn't be home til late.

Casper would never admit it, but he missed Ian on days like this, where he would be away for basically all day. Ian was basically his brother (though once he had been something... more, for a brief time), and Casper loved him more than anyone else. Of course, considering his lack of real family, or even many friends, this didn't necessarily say much. Still, it's the thought that counts.

Speaking of family...

Casper glanced out of the window to his left. The Reeses' house. The poor Reeses.

Casper didn't pity them, or at least so he told himself, but he did feel sorry for them. And he had heard what had happened to their mother (small town, after all). His mind felt darker just thinking about it. Instinctively he looked down from the window to the floor. The Reeses were nice people, certainly nicer than some other people in Casper's life. He shouldn't be thinking such thoughts about them.

"What? Oh, yeah," Casper said. He had accidentally ignored Ian for a second there.

"You feeling okay?" Ian said, in that special voice of his that gave Casper goosebumps. Ian asked if Casper was okay a lot, which Casper A) liked because it showed Ian cared, and B) disliked because it made him feel like a child who needed to be cared for.

Still, Casper smiled and said into the phone, "Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay. See you in some hours, hmm?"

Ian responded with an affirmative and a 'now don't do anything stupid while I'm gone, Casper'. Ian was such a parental friend.

Casper stepped outside to the porch, rolling up his long sleeves, just in time to catch some kid - on second glance, one of the Reeses, Robin - skateboard off, being his usual Robin self. Well, in his head he said kid; Robin wasn't much younger than Casper. Casper found his mind wandering again; he remembered someone who had been rebellious like the Reese boy. His name had been Anton, and Casper had been almost as close to him as he was with Ian. And then Anton had -

Casper grimaced for half a second, then took his phone out. He had better things to think about. And, of course, the first thing he sees is a news article on the disappearance of the Reese father and child. Casper put his music on shuffle then put his phone next to him on the chair arm. Well, Ian was out and Casper didn't exactly have many friends, so here he was, sitting on the porch, listening to music and letting his mind wander. Today was going to be a long day.

Friday June 1 | Waking up | 7 AM

Pling...

When she wakes up to the sound of someone sending her a message she is laying halfway out of her bed with her leg almost all the way out under her quilt she wipes away the sleep out of her eyes and looks at the clock "7 AM?" She thinks to herself who would be messaging me at this time? She picks up the phone and immediately regrets her decision as she forgot to turn down the light on it last night and she almost blinds herself as she starts it.

Message from Abigail 6:57 AM: "Hello there Ichi you won't have to come into work today as we will be closed for today. Have a good day off :)"

Hmmm? I guess they have closed for the day... what am I supposed to do now? should I just lie in bed? no. Should I just go to the pizza place and stuff myself? Maybe... Yea that sounds good, I just need to wake up first... h... There is a muffled hit to her bed as she falls backwards back into it and falls asleep in an instant.

Friday, June 1 | Waking up... again | 12 PM

Beep Beep Beep... Beep Beep Beep... Beep Beep Beep...

As the alarm clock beeps in her ear she is now on the floor with one leg still in the bed and rest of the body kind of diagonally on the floor out from her bed, "No I promise I don't do that stuff" she says as she wakes up with a jerk and quickly stops her alarm clock. Well, I guess its time to go get some breakfast or something she thinks to herself as she scratches the back of her head where she probably hit it when falling out of her bed.

Friday, June 1 | En route to Oasi Pizza | 1:30 PM

Bzzzt... Bzzt.

Ashley incoming call:

"Hey Ashley how are you doing," Ichiro says with a happy but still tired voice as she starts talking to one of her best friends or as Ashley would say bff
"Hey Ichiro I am doing well I hope you are too, that was a crazy party last night huh? well anyway, I am heading to Oasi Pizza you know, the BEST hangover Pizza in town. Do you want to join me?"
"Yea Ashley is doing fine as well I am actually also heading to Oasi Pizza lets meet there okay? I am like 15 minutes out."
"Sounds good Ichiro Ill see you there"
*Click* Ichiro puts away the phone with a real smile on her face, she always liked hanging out with Ashley she is very energetic and she makes her feel loved and needed. Ichiro has known Ashley since 4th Grade so they have been friends a long time, and they can almost finish each other's sentences at this point, Ashley knows how to cheer up Ichiro and Ichiro knows how to calm down Ashley when she gets mad or when she gets way too excited for something.

The sound of a typewriter clacking away resounded in the small 1 bedroom apartment of the soon-to-be-famous reporter. It was dark, and dingy, with a thick layer of smoke from too many cigars, and a foul odor akin to a man who had barely ate, slept or showered in a week… Maybe even two, Jarrek couldn’t remember, couldn’t be bothered to care either, especially not since he was stuck with tedious editorial work when literally the BIGGEST SCOOP OF THE CENTURY WAS

RIGHT UNDER HIS NOSE!!!!!

”SON OF A BITCH!!!!” He shouted, slamming his meaty fists into his work desk, knocking over a glass, half-filled with bourbon onto the floor, shattering as it made contact. He stayed himself for a moment, heavy breathing the only sound in his ears, hands ringing from the sudden physical distress he brought them. ”Goddamn cocksuckers…. he muttered to himself before taking a big drag from a well wet and worn cigar he lit maybe 20 minutes ago. Exhaling with a few coughs in-between, he ripped the article he was working on into bits, throwing them into the mountainous pile beside him. Shoving the crinkled cigar into an ashtray he removed himself from his work desk to view his ‘connection wall’.

The wall was a mess of photographs, articles and red string, outlying the theories and connections that could possibly be related to the ‘real’ criminals of Millington. The Reese family was at the top of that list, oh sure, they might seem like homely individuals, real ‘Pillars of the Community’, but that didn’t make them perfect. Everyone has a secret, a truth to be revealed, theirs was somewhere along the lines of funding ammunition for those Sand-Nigger, Pig-Fuckers in the Taliban and Afghan Army. Hell, today could be the American Dream, and tomorrow, the 4th Reich is slamming their Ubermensch barbed dildos right into Uncle Sam.

Jarrek sighed heavily, running his hand down his sweaty brow to his scraggly facial hair. Looking at the wall he pondered, ”How long since the disappearances?” He had so many questions, so many theories, but his Jew Penny Pincher of a Boss wouldn’t let him near the Reese Family. ”They’ve been through enough already he says. I won’t let you harm a single hair on their reputable head he yells!” Groaning in frustration, Jarrek fetches another glass before pouring himself whatever was left of the bourbon. A small amount to be sure, but enough until he could get himself another bottle.

Downing in one go, he decided enough was enough; Jarrek Garrethorn had to take initiative. Finding the least smelly clothes, donning his jacket and shades, and applying some cologne for good measure, the man of the hour finally exited his apartment, unleashing a deathly miasma from its core. Lookout Town of Millington! A storm is brewing, and it’s name…. Is Hurricane Jarrek!

A car whizzes down the countryside, revving and roaring with each shift of the gear and press of the gas pedal. The air felt and smelt so much cleaner than L.A., her choice in moving having been more than a welcome one when she made it nearly 5 years ago. Adelaide mused on her life choices, how much had changed and how much simply stayed the same. Well she was still a pain in the ass (literally) to lecherous men, and Charlie now at the ripe age of 5 was just beginning to learn the benefits of climbing trees (Adelaide having to catch him from falling and scolding him for it more than once). She chuckled to herself, life certainly was a funny thing, and sometimes it was a tragic one.

Her mind wandered to darker places, her parents, her uncle, the Reese family now in their own time of crisis, two members simply...vanishing. Life could be unsettling sure, but for a father and his own child to suddenly disappear, it was just uncanny, coincidental even. The evidence seemed to point to the father kidnapping the child out of sheer insanity and devastation over his recent losses; who knew what his other children were going through. Maybe her neighbor will figure it out, that detective with those bright blue eyes and just tussled enough hair. Adelaide didn’t see him often, probably the conflicting schedules of a Nanny and an officer of the law, but when she did...man was he a looker. That being said, dating and relationships were the furthest thing from her mind, right now what mattered, was caring for those kids; they need their ‘Auntie’.

Shifting the gears she sped her way down the road, she knew Ana didn’t approve of tardiness, but beaut of a car had her covered. An ‘81 Trans Am, it was her Uncle’s, after his death she kept it as a memento, it even had some upgrade and alterations to the original, like having a stick shift transmission; automatics were for pussies anyway.

After some time she made it to the Victorian estate of Annabelle Dawson, the loaded and way too uptight lawyer, also her employer. Despite that description, Adelaide had some real appreciation for the woman, she was dedicated, focused and damn good at her job. That also being said, the money she was paid was real good, allowed her to have a home and buy clothing befit for presentation in front of her children, like the purple button up blouse that covered her tat and non-hole filled denims she wore. The dull revving of the Trans Am filled the air as it pulled into the driveway.

Interestingly enough someone was at the door...with flowers? Weird, didn’t think Ana would have found another Romeo given some of the stuff she’d heard about her ex. ’Huh… guess I’ll brighten the Boss’ day up’, she thought. Getting out of her car and closing the door, she casually strut over to the flower boy and piped up ”Can I help you or something?” The kid looked nervous, but stuttered out, “y-y-yes I’m hear t-to deliver some FLOWERS” his voice cracked. He coughed before continuing, “flowers t-t-o a uh…” he looked down at the card, “Ms…. uhh Daw-”. Adelaide had enough ”Yea-yeah, that’s me, give me the damn clipboard” she snatched the board from the kids hand, quickly forging her boss’ signature, shoved the clipboard back into his hands and snagged the flowers, ”Thanks kid, now buzz off” she jerked her head towards his car as he squealed in distress and bolted. ”Tsk...nobody need that shit” Turning to the door, she rapped on it with her knuckles before opening it, ”Oh Lucyyyy, I’m hooooommmme!”

Abigail Reese

“Abi. Hi.”

Abigail nearly jumped out of her skin as her brothers voice suddenly came from behind her, breaking the eerie silence in the house. She quickly turned to face him, clearly startled as backed against the kitchen entry door frame and raised a hand to her chest as if to calm her heart from beating out of her chest.

“I wasn’t expecting you.”

"I wasn't expecting you either!" She smiled and laughed at herself. She had never been the jumpy type in the past but... things were different now.

“Can I get you something to eat?”

Her smile quickly dissipated as her fear subsided and she got a good look at her brother. Green eyes scanned him over, ignoring his offer and taking in the complete mess that he was. "Oh, Demi..." She frowned, meeting her gaze with his, a knowing look in her eyes. Her younger brother was typically so well put together. Hell, he usually had a better fashion sense than she did. Right now... he looked like a ghost! Some kind of pale, unkempt, polar opposite version of himself. If she didn't know any better, she would have thought he was sick with the flu. It wasn't pretty, but she could relate. Before today, she had done the bare minimum at taking care of herself. Besides when she dragged herself into work, she hardly showered and spent a majority of her time in pajamas.

"I'm going to get lunch started for everyone. You go shower and get ready, okay? I thought everyone could-"

“ABIGAIL! YOU LEFT THE DOOR UNLOCKED!”

There was the noise that she remembered in the house.

Abigail turned to look down the hallway, spotting her little sister flying into the house like a bat out of hell. At least Megara was still herself... though, sometimes that was a bit concerning. Comforting to have some sort of stability but at the same time... shouldn't Meg be more affected by this? Abigail supposed everyone dealt with these sort of things in their own way. Megara wasn't the only one in the family who seemed more or less unaffected by their mothers suicide, and now this.

“Demi! Are you awake!? I need you to sign this paper!”

Abigail raised a brow and shot a glance at her brother, trying to see if he had any knowledge of what she might be asking him to sign.

"What are you trying to get yourself into now, Meg?" She poked a little fun at her sister who had become notorious for constantly having something up her sleeve. The girl was too clever for her own good sometimes.

Seeing her brother Marcus slink into the kitchen, Abigail smiled at him. "Good morning sleepy head." She assumed he had just woken up by the somber look on his face and the bed head hair.

"What's on the agenda for today?"

"Weeeell," Abi grinned, obviously excited about her grand plan "I thought everyone could use a day out of the house, so-"

The unmistakable "WEEUU-WEEU-WEEU HOONNK HOOONK" of her car alarm stopped her short. Her eyes grew wide - was someone breaking into her car just to steal all of her belongings she left in there?! Right in broad daylight, in her own drive way?!

Abigail carefully and rapidly maneuvered herself around all of her siblings and bolted for the door. She ripped it open and ran outside, just in time to see the infamous Robin skateboarding off into the distance.

"Nice wheels, Abi-Abi! Better take good care of it!"

She sighed, relieved and annoyed at the same time. Why did Robin always have to cause a scene? She would have blamed this behavior on the way he was coping, acting out for attention, but unfortunately he had been this way for as long as she could remember. Although, lately, it did seem like he was acting out more often.

"Robin, wait!" She tried to call after him, recognizing his outfit as his work uniform. "I wanted to..." Her voice trailed off as he disappeared over the hill on his skateboard, unable to hear anything she would have tried to say. She sighed, deflated, which showed wholeheartedly in her body language. Her "grand plan" wasn't going to go as smoothly as she anticipated. She should have known better.

Grabbing her key fob and turning off the car alarm, she glanced over at her neighbor who was working on his car in the drive way. She had never met the man face-to-face before, but she felt bad that he had to witness the whole Robin fiasco. Not only that, but the fall into chaos of the entire Reese family. No doubt, everyone in town knew what had been happening to them. They were a spectacle. Entertaining to most, a sob story to others.

She put on a nervous, weary smile and gave a sheepish wave to the man. "Sorry about that!" She called to him, hoping the alarm didn't upset anyone in the neighborhood. She didn't want to be a bad neighbor on top of all they were already dealing with.

She headed on inside again, finding her siblings not too far behind to see what was going on. "I closed the diner for the day." It was time to get to the point. "I think we all need a day off and some fresh air. I've planned a picnic day!" She anticipated a groan from Megara, who would most likely have to be dragged to the park with them. Nonetheless, she hoped this day would help lift some spirits. At least for Demi, Abi, and Marcus' sake.

"Everyone go get ready. I'm going to finish making lunch for us and then we can go pick up Brina from school!" She smiled and headed towards the kitchen, obviously leaving out Robin's name. He had chosen not to even speak with her, so she had chosen to let him find out on his own that the diner was closed. Perhaps he would choose differently next time.

Reverend Lloyd Townshend

Time: ??? Location: Some Alleyway

Throb

The street perhaps wasn’t the best place for Lloyd to try and put his life back together, but he didn’t have much choice in the matter considering it’s where he came to. Had nobody seen him? Or were they simply too used to the sight to care? Admittedly, he didn’t wake up in alleyways that often, so the first was more likely in a town as small as Millington. On the plus side, waking up on the streets was better than waking up in a stranger’s bed- at least he didn’t have to worry about getting tested for an STD this way. Not that his aching bones or head cared very much about that at the moment. If left up to his body to decide, it’d gladly sleep with every woman in town to avoid waking up on concrete. Probably the men too, if he was drunk enough.

With a groan and more than one cracking joint Lloyd did eventually manage to collect the willpower to stand- with the rush of blood causing yet another throb of pain dig into his skull. Why did he keep doing this to himself?

Nevermind- there were more important things to worry about.

It was… Saturday? No, Friday, unless his night was far more wild than he could remember- which was probably true. It was definitely daytime, and while he could check the time on his phone Lloyd had no desire to find out how long he had actually been on the streets. Problems, after all, went away if you ignored them, and he had a number of bigger issues to address. Like a shower, a change of clothes, and more important than either: food. The reverend felt like he was starving to death- and he had no desire to meet the God he preached about quite yet. So against the protest of his popping knees, the zombie-preacher began shuffling his way down the streets of Millington in search of food.

Thankfully, it didn’t take him long to recognize where he was. Fairly near to the heart of town, which meant the Orchid was nearby. Good food, good staff, good prices, a veritable godsend to a man with his needs. A quick check confirmed that he still had his wallet on him- and the money was even still inside- and Lloyd began moving with renewed purpose. The zombie almost became a man, one with a clear mission. The real question though was what he was going to order. Certainly coffee, his throbbing head wouldn’t forgive him if he let that opportunity slip by. As for the food itself: Eggs and bacon? A sandwich? Oh! He knew what would be perfect, a solid order of-

CLOSED

God is dead.

Only silence greeted his blaspheme.

Still, after a moment of frustration he noticed the additional note beneath:

We are very sorry for the inconvenience! With recent events, we have taken the day off. We'll be back tomorrow! See you then! Mention that you came by today and we'll give you a discount for the trouble!

Tch.

Of course he knew about the troubles of the Reese family, who didn’t in this town? The mother died of… suicide? All the better, so she didn’t have to witness losing her husband and daughter these months later. Sure, there was a chance the two were unharmed- they hadn’t been missing for too long yet- but Lloyd found it hard to have much hope there. Perhaps he should try harder to have faith, given his role in the community, but it was difficult in today’s world.

Man, I really do suck at my job.

With a sigh he turned away from the door of the diner before depressing thoughts- depressing memories- could overtake him. Problems, after all, went away if you ignored them. Instead he tried to find a new destination, now that the zombie-man had been freshly slain by a closed sign. Thankfully for his stomach, it didn’t take long to find one. Right across the street from him was salvation itself, Oasi Pizza. He didn’t even like pizza all that much, but he wasn’t willing to be too picky at the moment.

As if washing his hands of their plight, Lloyd stepped away from the Reese’s diner and began making his way towards their competitor. He would, of course, help them how he could, but right now he suspected they needed more than words and empty comforts to soothe their souls. He didn’t know how likely it was that the cops would be able to give them a satisfying conclusion to the disappearances, but for now the reverend would put his faith in them. He would also, of course, have to take the Reese family up on their offer for a discounted meal.

He was a preacher, not a saint.

1pm

Triple espresso caramel macchiato in hand, Levi took a seat in one of the window booths of the Starbucks. Somehow, the cute blonde barista at the cash register had convinced him to get this ridiculous, frothy drink. He told her he needed something to wake him up, so this is what she pitched. It was good, he’d admit, but it also tasted like pure sugar. The drink was a stark difference from the typical black coffee he would drink at the Reese’s diner. He had waited in line for nearly 30 minutes and paid about triple what he would have paid at the diner too.

Sipping his macchiato, he watched as people passed by outside. A couple walking up to the diner across the street, only to be as disappointed as he was. It truly was a shame, but a well deserved day off. He began to wonder if any of the people passing by knew anything about the disappearances. Had anyone seen anything? Heard anything? Someone had to know something. Someone always did.

Levi plucked his phone out of his pocket as it vibrated, indicating an incoming text message.

It’s been two hours

A message from Campbell, who was expecting him at the office by this time to hear about the so-called lead. It would have to wait a little longer. Levi wasn’t in the right frame of mind to be in the office. He was still half asleep. Luckily being a detective meant he could make his own flexible hours. In reality, that typically meant that he worked 24/7.

He wrote back, “Be there soon. Need coffee.

Putting his phone away and looking up, he watched as a car parked out in front of Oasi Pizza. When the door opened up, a familiar face exited the car. One of the waitresses at the Reese diner. What was her name again? Ich... Icha? Ichy? He really should have remembered her name simply by how many times he had seen her in the restaurant.

Considering that she was on his list of people to interview, he stood up and left the Starbucks. Just as she was about to enter the restaurant, Levi called out to her, “Miss!” Remembering her name really would have come in handy right about now. “Err, excuse me, miss…” He slowed his pace as he approached her, hoping she would recognize him so he didn’t appear to be some weird stalker.

Ichiro was looking at her phone checking facebook while stepping out of her car, she kind of fixed her hair and then starting walking towards the pizzeria, she had her favourite outfit on which consisted of black boots, light black leggings, a white top and a teal dress that has bands over her shoulders she had her red headphones on her head and listening to her feel good mix on Spotify.

From the corner of her eye, she sees someone kind of jogging towards her so she takes off her headphones to see if they wanted something “Err, excuse me, miss…” the man said as he approached her, she looked at his face and noticed that it was that cop who always ate at the diner, what was his name now again? Something with L, Leon? Leo? Le? Lev… Levi, right. “ Hi, Levi was it right? You are that one cop who always comes for breakfast every morning, what can I help you with sir?” he seems like he is in a hurry, I wonder what he wants.

Well, now he just felt like an asshole. A detective ought to be better at remembering people's names, especially ones he saw almost daily.

That's me!” He flashed her a friendly grin, happy and a bit ashamed that she remembered his name. “I know this is a bit informal, but we are interviewing people close to the Reese family right now. I figured since you're here…. Would you mind answering some questions for me?

Of course, you don't have to. You're not under arrest or anything like that.” He chuckled a bit, hoping to ease the mood. People usually weren't fond of getting interviewed by the police and often became very defensive, or even aggressive.

How about I buy us lunch and we can discuss inside?” He gestured towards the pizza establishment she had been heading into and pulled open the door with his free hand, hoping she would take up his offer. Who didn't like free pizza?

She hesitated for a moment as he gave her the offer of free pizza in exchange for an interview, it's not really like she is hiding anything so she decided to follow him in “ I will do the interview on one condition, Ashley also gets a free pizza she said with a smug smile on her face, of course, she would use this situation, and Ashley was already waiting for her so giving her free pizza would make sure she does not get annoyed that they can't hang out for now, she thought as she ducked under his arm that is holding the door and walked into the establishment.

The girl wasn’t dumb, she certainly knew how to use a situation to her advantage. Two whole pizzas? This interview, which he was almost sure would prove useless, was going to cost him 40 bucks. He didn’t exactly peg this petite, blue-haired girl as a kidnapper… or a murderer. Possible, sure, but highly unlikely. Nonetheless, he was supposed to do interviews, so he followed her inside and noted to keep his mouth shut about offering free stuff next time.

Hi there!” He greeted the young blonde girl at the counter @Lasrever, “We’d like two medium pizzas please, one for here and one to go. Anything that miss, uh… miss… I’m sorry, what was your name again?” He gave her a sheepish smile, hoping she didn’t take too much offence to it.

”I feel offended that you don't know my name officer. Aren't you supposed to be a detective or something?” she said with a smile on her lips in a joking tone. ”Anyways my name is Ichiro and I would like olives on my pizza if that is okay with Mr. Detective.” she says as she puts the puppy eyes and the innocent voice to work to try to convince him.

Ichiro! Of course!” He smiled and looked to the girl at the counter, “Two pizzas, anything that miss Ichiro’s heart desires.

2pm

Now sitting in a booth at the restaurant, with a few slices of pizza in his stomach and the to-go pizza in a box on the table, Levi settled back into the cushions and let out a satisfied sigh. “Alright… let’s see… ” He reached into his coat pocket and took out a tiny notepad and pen, just in case anything of interest came up. “When and where was the last time you saw Mr. Reese?

”Last time I saw Mr. Reese? That was probably at the end of the Thursday before he disappeared, it was like May 24th? Yea it was, right? That was probably the last time I saw him. I was finishing my shift at the diner, I believe I was cleaning the tables when he came up to me and gave me my paycheck as I really wanted to buy something and he agreed to giving me the paycheck a week early.” She said trying to think back to the night.

I see. How close would you say you were to him?

”They were like a second family to me so I would say that we were very close.” She said while kind of tearing up thinking about the man that she saw as a second Father. ”I really just… I'm sorry for crying… he was like a second father to me you know...” She wipes her tears and tries to calm down.

It’s okay, I know this is a tough subject….” He frowned, pausing for a brief moment so that she could collect herself, “Would you say Mr. Reese was a likeable man? Did he have any enemies that you might have been aware of?

”Yea definitely he was one of the nicest people I ever met, I don’t understand who would not like him.”

Did he seem on edge at all when you saw him last? Nervous, worried, that sort of thing?

”I wouldn't say that he was specifically on edge that night, nothing more than he used to be at the end of the month.”

Where were you the morning of May 25th? It was a Friday.

”I was still in bed I believe, I woke up at 10:00 AM.”

Okay, I think that’s it for now Miss Ichiro. Thank you for your cooperation. You’re free to go.” He gave her a sly little wink, accompanied with a playful smirk.

”Thank you for the free pizza Mr. Detective!” She says with a playful tone as she puts up her hand to her ear in a call me gesture then jokingly winks at him as she stands up and walks out to talk to her friend Ashley that has been waiting at her car.

Levi raised his brows, slightly taken aback at her flirty gesture. He made a mental note to find out how old this girl was. Surely not underage, but perhaps still too young for his tastes. It had been awhile since he had been in “the game”, but……. His train of thought drifted as he watched her leave the restaurant, specifically watching the way her hips swayed back and forth underneath her dress.

Once she was out the door, he snapped back into reality and shook his head. Now was not the time!!

Millington, a town blanketed in lies; on the outside it looked quaint and pristine, filled with its little cafes and dog parks. Jarrek however knew the truth, that the small town was a corrupt cesspool filled with liars, thieves, hookers and blackjack. One of these days he was gonna blow the whistle, burn this whole town to the ground and wipe it off the map; they'd never get another 5 star review on TripAdvisor ever again. Driving downtown in his mighty Steed, Jarrek's eyes scoured every building, every person, every dog and cat that he almost ran over, searching for even an inkling of evidential course that would lead him to his next bust.

The question was, what evidence was he looking for that was going to lead him to who done gone and did it? That was the one thing really wracking his brain the past couple of weeks, despite all his effort and resources, he was simply stumped. The red threads only traveled so far on his wall, there was one missing link that could lead him to the source. It was only a matter of time before he stumbled upon it, even if he had to conduct tests on every scraping of blood, sweat or semen to find the proof in the bodily pudding. He wasn't above breaking the law either, he'd certainly spent some nights in the precinct, mostly for petty stuff though. Going back Jarrek recounted some of his misdemeanors, like breaking and entering, vandalism, disturbing the peace...he punched a cop once, that didn't go over so well, had to flea the county after that number.

Lost in his own thoughts he barely had time to register the soon to be asphalt planted person in front of his car, before abruptly slamming his brakes and honking his horn. Swerving out of the way he nearly hit a second person before his car collided into a parked car, crumpling up their benders in the process. When the dust had settled Jarrek was visibly and irrationally angry at the situation he landed himself into, "GODDAM- MOTHER FUCKI- COCK SUCKI- WHORES!!!!" Each swear was met with a jostling ragdoll movement of a very frustrated(fat) man, which in turn jostled his car. Attempting to open the door, he realized he was stuck in his car as the door barely budged and angrily started rolling down his window. Once opened he struggled to pull himself through it, with all the aggressiveness of a water buffalo, his fat rolls constrained against the tiny opening, before suddenly popping out and landing back first onto the concrete. "SON OF A BITCH!!!"

Pulling himself up, all the while breathing heavily he searched for his distraction that lead to the unfortunate vehicular collision. Eyeing up his target he started on his tangent "YOU ASSHOLE, LOOK AT WHAT you made..me...do......" Inexplicably the oil canister that was about to explode, suddenly calmed as a realization hit him. The Reverend...OF COURSE!!! Suddenly giddy with joy, Jarrek believed himself to have found the next avenue to the missing link, the reverend was part of the church, church and state were separate, freedom of speech, press, religion, it was PERFECT! "GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION!!!" Jarrek was practically weeping with joy at this sudden epiphany, lacking any empathy at the damage he caused or the lives he nearly ruined, and completely oblivious to the detective inside the pizza shop. Shoving past his second near accidental kill of the day he hastily approached the Reverend.

"Jarrek Garrethorn, Millington Post, do you have any comments on the sudden disappearance of Mr. Reese and his youngest daughter?!" In ten seconds flat Jarrek had gone from pissed to invasive and he was not above listing off potential kidnappers. He didn't care who they were, so long as they were exposed, whether it was ISIS, the KKK or hell even the goddamn Canadians; where do they got off having free health care?

The Dawson Family
& The Nanny

Collab with @BeastofDestiny & @Lovely Complex

Tying her silk robe closed, Annabel sighed to herself when she heard the entrance of her nanny. She was still looking out the window, watching the flower boy running away for dear life. She wasn’t necessarily in the mood to put on a face, but she did need to start her day. That entailed clothes so she could give her neighbors a visit. From her closed office, she called out to Adelaid, not returning the humor, simply telling her, her plan, “We’ll be giving that to the Reeses. Put it in my blue vase, please.” which was in the kitchen on the island, empty and waiting.

“The kids need to eat,” she added. The tone of her voice was enough to display that the bosswoman wasn’t in the best mood. She started her morning off thinking too much, and now she had to consider her friend’s and her sister’s words. Was taking a break worth the leisure? Having too much free time simply meant Ana couldn’t keep herself busy from thinking about unnecessary things. Things that made her feel insufficient and depressed. “Give me a few.” It was time to change and get her engine started. Put the smile on that everyone loved. Be a good, friendly neighbor and give her condolences.

Meanwhile, outside, Charles threw his toy water gun on the ground, Maya’s bunny plushie leaned against the tree. The tree with a tire swing on it, “This isn’t fun.” He pouted, sitting on the floor and grabbing his friend’s stuffed animal, one of many, and placing it on his lap. “You’re too big and too fast. And win all the time. It’s no fun.” Charlie wasn’t very confident in his abilities to take down his sister, which is why he liked Maya as his partner. They both were capable of taking her down. Together.

“Aw come on, Choo Choo.” Phoebe picked up his tiny water gun and tried to be a cowboy with her toy, and his, attempting to twirl it in her fingers like the movies, “You should try harder! Giving up just makes you lame.”

“I’m not lame! Mommy says I’m special and wonderful.” He possessively hugged the doll. “I just want my friend!” He defended his honor. There was nothing wrong with missing his friend. Phoebe was just being a big meanie. She should be missing Maya too!

Rolling her eyes, she slipped the toy guns in her mother’s belt, that was wrapped around her thin waist, and made her way to her brother, “Give me that, Choo Choo.” She tried pulling the bunny away from him, by the ears. “Mommy said she’s on a trip! You need to stop being a baby.”

“No! Stop it!” Charlie used all the force in the world so Phoebe could not take the bunny from him. Fortunately, Maya’s favorite teddy bear was on her bed, across the street. This was her second favorite stuffed animal named Brownie that she and Charlie shared. “You’re going to hide Brownie from me! Stop it, Phoebe! Leave Brownie alone!” Phoebe aggressively yanked the bunny out of her brother’s hands, but it was rewarded with the sound of a rip. The bunny’s head slightly hanged off and its stuffing seeped out.

The waterworks started and Charlie screamed. Phoebe immediately regretted everything and tried to calm him down. “Shuuush. Be quiet, will you! I’ll fix it, Charlie. Don’t cry!” He got up, pushing his sister away in the process, and picking up the wounded bunny. He started to run. “Choo Choo, I’m sorrryyy! Don’t tell mommy! Where are you going?!” He was trying to open the gate to tell the Reeses what his sister did. He was too tiny to reach the latch. His sister was a horrible person.

As per usual it was all business with Ana, and she sounded even grumpier than usual, most likely to do with the current situation at the Reese estate. “Got it boss! Well, time to make some money, honey, and what better way to do that than by making a quick and nutritious meal. Adelaid had some plans to concoct some new meals for the kids, but those were more suited towards dinner time, right now, it was more like chicken nuggies and mac & cheese time. Heading to the kitchen, she was just about to put the flowers in the vase before a blood curdling scream emanated from the backyard, nearly making Ade drop the bouquet right then and there. 'Annnnnd this is how my day starts,' she thought, sighing and shaking her head.

Carefully she placed the flowers in the vase and started making her way to the sliding door that lead to the backyard. In most cases, whether you’re a parent or a caretaker, whenever a child screams it's usually because tragedy struck, like they fell out of a tree or something. In Adelaid's experience, it was usually because Phoebe was being a brat to her brother, and while she wasn’t running like the four winds were at her back, she did stride out with purpose. "Alright you two, what’s going on out here?!” Her voice was raised, carrying out her authority without being angry or too loud. Thus the scene unfolded as such, Adelaid with her hands on her hips, head cocked and eyebrow raised her gaze sharp and discerning, whilst Charlie was still trying at the gate, and Phoebe looking like she was about to shit bricks. She walked her way over to Charlie, a quick gaze to Phoebe as if to say, what did you do now? before returning her attention to Charlie, a blubbering mess. Once in front of him, she crouched down, eye level to the tearful boy, her gaze calm and with a gentle smile on her face asked, "What’s wrong Charlie? Why are you crying?”

Charlie couldn’t muster words. He tried to in between cries, but it was just a blubbering mess, so he lifted up Maya’s bunny and said the only thing he could say, “Dead.” While the nanny was preoccupied, Phoebe used this to get her actual mommy involved, to soften the blow. So. She scurried silently into the house. Regardless if Ade yelled for her to stop, she wasn’t going to. Phoebe was what you call a bad apple that did what she wanted.

As was tradition, whenever Charlie cried out wolf, Phoebe would slither away and seek asylum with mommy. Even if Adelaid told her to stop, she was too free spirited to listen to her and in a way it was kind of cute the way the kid reminded her of herself; a free spirited brat. Either way, one crisis at a time, as a nearly headless stuffed bunny, the one that Maya shared with him. Her smile faded into a more thoughtful one, she felt bad for the children, enduring through the white lie that had been fed to them, they must have missed their friend so badly. The moment passing, her smile resumed as she attempted to reassure the boy, a small giggle eliciting before stating, "Don’t worry baby, Brownie’s not dead, he’s just got a little booboo, that’s all!”

Grabbing Charlie from both sides, she hoisted him up into the crux of her arm and with her free hand, grabbed a handkerchief to wipe his eyes and nose; practically needed those on hand for him. "How about this? Let’s go inside and I’ll take Brownie to the bunny doctor, okay? And for being such a good friend and taking care of him, I think you deserve a little treat for lunch! How about...chicken nugget dinos and fries?” The tears lessened at the offering of nug dinos and french fries. He loved fries. Sniffling he nodded. Taking Brownie to the doctor will be good for her. Then when Maya came back home, she would know he was a good daddy. "Alright! First though, let’s go say hi to mommy, okay?”

“Mommy is going to be mad I’m crying. She never cries, so me crying is bad.” Charlie rubbed his face gently on the back of Brownie’s almost-falling-off-head, not realizing he was making it worse. That made Adelaid’s heart sting a little, if only he knew what Ana endured, the nights that Ade had to console the woman when she had too much to drink. Mommys had to be strong however, they couldn’t show that side of themselves, at first the thought of it was pure rubbish, but as the years went on, she understood why she couldn’t be that way around them. "Don’t worry baby, mommy’s not gonna be mad, she’s gonna be so proud of you for taking care of Brownie, now come on, let’s go inside.” With that, she made her way back into the house, package and all. Phoebe on the other hand, she’d deal with later, there were other...tortures she could put her through that didn’t involve a silver suppository.

Inside her bedroom now, Ana rummaged through her clothes in her closet, deciding what she should wear. Should she wear one of her classy formal suits? Probably not. She wasn’t working today. Pulling out a blue summer maxi dress she stared at it for a bit, until shaking her head. She wasn’t feeling that either. Before she came to any decision, her daughter came rushing into the master bedroom, “MOMMY! Choo Choo isn’t being a big boy and he’s trying to get me in trouble.”

Ana narrowed her eyes. Phoebe knew better than to run into her bedroom like that. “One second. Mommy’s kinda getting dressed.” Poking her head into the closet, seeing her nakey mom, well her mommy was in a bra and panty, but she was still nakey, Phoebe suggested, “Wear the last dress you wore when you went out with Mrs. Reese! It looks very pretty on you. Pink looks pretty on you.” Her daughter wasn’t going to give her space, was she?

Fine.

Choosing the dress she wore the day before Ophelia committed suicide, and her white jean jacket, with brown boots, Ana made a couple of glances towards her naughty daughter, who was gawking at her. Most likely glad to still see her mother home. This was one of her dresses she wore in college, but hey, it still fit her. Didn’t make her look her age though. Nothing really helped with her looking older. Even when she tried to be more conservative, it simply looked like a twenty year old trying to be taken seriously, but failing. That’s where her words come in. Once she opens her mouth, people know she isn’t some ‘dumb blonde’.

“Are you going to tell me what happened or will I have to get the spoon involved?”

“No!” Phoebe defensively yelled back. Rarely did Ana discipline her children but when it was needed, the spoon got involved. The enemy in this household. “No wooden spoon is needed, mommy.” Note to self, hide it. Hide that damn spoon. “We were just playing and Brownie got caught on the tree and broke!” Phoebe lied. If there was one thing that was NOT going to happen was her getting spanking! She would run away if that happened. Absolutely run away!

“Is that so? What else happened?” The mother calmly responded, as she went to her vanity, grabbing her brush and quickly taming her hair down.

“Charlie keeps talking about Maya. When are they coming back anyways? I can’t keep him happy by myself!” Through the mirror, Ana stared at the death glare that her daughter was giving her. Persistent and with a point. Ana didn’t know how to answer her daughter’s question...

"Knock, knock!” As if the angels had descended down from heaven, Adelaid appeared in the doorway to Ana’s bedroom, a much more calm Charlie in her hands. Scanning the room, she found thing #2 and made it a point to give her an extra cheery smile before lowering the young boy to the ground. "Hey Phoebe, why don’t you take your brother downstairs and play in the living room, lunch’ll be ready soon, okay?” There was a cheer in her voice sure, but there was intent in it, something that said I dare you to try and do anything different in front of Mommy. Turning to Charlie, Adelaid extended her hand, "I can take Brownie to the bunny doctor, okay? Don’t worry, I’ll be extra gentle with her.”

As much as Phoebe wanted to sass the nanny out, and trust me, she had a lot of comebacks, she decided to hold her tongue and pay her respect later. “Fine.” Just you wait old lady! You’re messin with the wrong villain. Yes, Phoebe was already plotting up something to set Ade’s world on FIRE. Doom to the old fart!

“...okay, be very, very soft. And have the doctor give Brownie a lollipop.” Charlie released the plushie and looked toward his mommy, “I’m okay, mommy. I love you.”

Ana’s gaze softened at the scene, always respecting Ade’s way with her children. “I love you too, Choo Choo Charlie.” The boy beamed his dimpled smile at his mama, before Phoebe started tugging his hand to leave.

“Let’s go.” Before Phoebe left, she met her dark gaze with the nanny’s, equally challenging her. She didn’t like the nanny. One day, the nanny would go. After a minute or two, the kids left to play downstairs.

“Fun start?” Ana teased, going back to brushing her hair.

Adelaid watched as the kids bolted downstairs and as soon as they were out of earshot, she looked back to Ana, "Ah, you know how it is,” grunting a little as she stood up, "Just looking after another casualty of war and what not.” Casually making her way over to one of the dressers, she retrieved a small sewing kit from one of the top drawers, selected an appropriate color to match Brownie’s fur, then planted herself on the vanity next to Ana. Threading the needle she got to work on reattaching a nearly decapitated bunny head. This wasn’t her first one either, Phoebe was rather rough on her toys, or more appropriately, her brother’s toys. While some would say that she showed her playthings lots of love, Adelaid would say she was just being a brat, not an issue so long as it didn’t go too far, but it did cause some kinks in the cog.

While working, her eyes wandered over to her boss, she did look rather gorgeous in that dress and couldn’t help but express it, "Damn Momma, you lookin’ fine today, got a hot date or something?” Adelaid couldn’t help but laugh a little.

“I wished.” Ana chuckled back. “The little devil herself chose this outfit. I guess I have nothing better to do, so might as well look like I got it all together. Amiright?” Placing her brush down, she started applying light makeup under and around her eyes for the apparent dark circles. “Griffon and Lyla left me messages. I’ll call them back eventually. They want me to… not work.” In short, yeah, that was what their messages were about.

Ade raised an eyebrow, her needlework stopping, "You? On vacation? Since when did pigs start flying,” She laughed a little harder this time, before going back to her operation, eyes softening, "But for real hun...it's not a bad idea to take a little time off and get yourself squared away.” She stopped and placed the half finished plushie on the vanity, looking at Ana. "What happened to that family, sucks and I’ve only known them for a few years, I can’t imagine what’s going on in your head right now.” There was a bit of concern in her voice, "I know you haven’t been sleeping right lately, and I know you use work to focus on things and sort of make everything else disappear for a bit, but you need to focus on you. If nothing else, think of the kids, I mean, how long are we expected to keep the charade up? They’re smart...well, Pheebs is smart,” deviously cunning was more the right word as she continued her handiwork.

"Look...you’ve been running ragged lately, and those kids have gone from a daily habit of having their little friend over for two years, to suddenly zilch; they know somethin’ ain’t right. RIght now, they need you, more than ever and if taking time off means helping them will lead a way to helping you, I think it’s worth it.”

Placing her makeup sponge down, Ana turned her body towards her friend, her voice lowering, saddening, “It feels like February all over again.” The month that Ophelia committed suicide. “I could’ve stopped that, y’know. There were signs. Like the last time I saw her was a plea for help, but I was too focused on me. What if this is the same shit? Like I could’ve stopped Roddy from doing something stupid?” Truthfully, she was a terrible friend and if anything, she probably only made their personal lives worse by never being there for them like they were for her.

Ade continued to listen while finishing the surgery, making one last incision and snip she inspected the bunny. It smelled a little off and was a bit sticky and gooey from Charlie sobbing all over it, but nothing that a bath in the washer couldn’t fix. Lowering the plushie next to Ana’s hand, she briskly moved over it to grab it consolingly, clasping her other hand over it, "Babe, you can’t keep blaming yourself for that,” Ade looked her in the eyes, "Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda, Life. Happens. People make choices all the time and sometimes we have no idea why they made them, but we can’t go and blame ourselves for other people’s actions.” She let that hang in the air for a moment, her eyes fixated on the stressed woman in front of her. "If you really believe that though, that you could’ve done somethin’ better back then, then do somethin’ better now. Not just as your nanny, but as your friend, take a break and I’m not askin’,” she shook her head a little, her voice becoming a little more serious, "I’m tellin’, be here for yourself, for your children and for that family.”

Ade had a point, but it was hard to not feel like she didn’t fail. Her job dealt with the truth and fighting someone’s case. Yet, when it came to her own personal relations, all that went out the door. Logic didn’t seem to exist. “Fine. I doubt you’ll take no for an answer, even if you know I’ll do what I want regardless of what anyone says,” Like mother, like daughter. “I will ‘take a break’. Whatever the hell that means. Now.” She checked herself once more in the mirror. One last thing. She applied maroon lipstick on, before adding, “Let’s feed the monsters, before they actually become monsters.” More so Phoebe than Charles.

“What actually happened, anyways?”

"I think I’ve got a few ideas on how to help you out with ‘taking a break’” Ade smiled with a wink before taking the bunny to the laundry basket, tossing it in and hefting it up. "As for what happened,” she shrugged, "Hell if I know, my guess, Phoebe being a brat again...speaking of which…” she trailed off as she started downstairs, "Pheebs! Whatchu want for lunch?!” “You know what I like… old lady. SLOPPY JOES, DUH.” "Great! Fish Sticks it is!” her voice echoed.

You will pay...
