Tokiko sighed and slouched as the little brunette started telling her off for her behavior. Freaking... normal people. With magical girls, at least you could just have a fight and work out your differences. With anyone else though, it was always talking, talking, and more useless talking, arguing in circles and getting nowhere. Such a pain.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and she took it out for a quick peek, ignoring Hikari's little rant. RokuGun had gotten back to her, and from the sound of it the meeting was a go. A cosplay cafe, though? Tokiko didn't hang around in places like that much. Still, it made sense as a place for them to meet in magical girl form, somewhere they could blend in pretty easily. Not that my magical girl costume looks like anything special...

It took her only a couple of seconds to tap out a reply. sounds good. meet u there in half an hour.

Then she raised her head, and looked Hikari in the eye. "Sorry, what was that? I'm not used to being lectured by grade schoolers."

Argh! Again with the anger, the insults. No matter how much she tried to live up to her ideal of a magical girl, everyone was just so freaking irritating! Gritting her teeth and turning on her heel, she started to walk away. "I have places to be, so just leave me alone!"

"..."

Grade schoolers. Grade schoolers. All at once, Hikari's anger reached its boiling point and exploded.

"Grade schooler?! I'm sixteen, you... you idiot!" she cried, seething as she stepped after the taller girl. At first she'd mostly been upset at almost being bumped into, and then at the fact that the taller girl(who now seemed to definitely be someone who at least went to the same high school... Honami? A star student in her class, or something like that) had walked away without seeing if she was alright. But now she'd been directly insulted like that... There was no way she would let this go. Hikari didn't care if Honami had to go somewhere, she was going to give her a piece of her mind!

"Just because I'm... I'm small doesn't mean I'm young! And that doesn't mean you can treat me like this!" she snapped, following after her. By this point, they seemed to have entered a somewhat more secluded location, "I'm not about to put up with being called a little gi-"

There was suddenly a rush of wind, a sound like a gun being fired.

The tip of a spear had suddenly embedded itself into the wall between both girls, and the sheer force of its impact knocked Hikari off her feet, sending the small brunette girl tumbling backwards, knocked off her feet.

"Ah?!"

Heavily, with a yelp of surprise and some pain, Hikari landed on her back. As quickly as she could, bewildered, she sat up, and saw...

A strange girl with some sort of winged outfit, perched on the shaft of the spear.

"I'm sorry about this," she began, cocking her head to one side, "But I really don't need more competition!"

Hikari was at once stunned and at a complete loss. Where had this girl come from, and how? What was happening!? She had wings?! A spear?! What was this?!

Why is she following me? Tokiko figured that most girls would have been scared off by her surly demeanor by now, but this one just kept getting more and more riled up. Even when Tokiko tried heading down an empty alleyway to throw her off, she kept on coming. The taller girl scrunched her face up in frustration. What would she have to say to get rid of this person?

"I'll call you whatever I damn well please, you tiny—"

She found herself stumbling forwards as something slammed into the wall behind her, hard enough to crack concrete. Her glasses clattered to the ground, and she yelped in alarm. The heck was that? Did someone shoot at us?

Someone was talking, but it wasn't Hikari. Some other girl, talking about competition... aha. The realization calmed Tokiko down, and as she snatched up her glasses and put them back on, her suspicions were confirmed. A magical girl! It made sense: there were likely to be scuffles ahead of the Hex Night itself, and as (in her own opinion) one of the stronger magical girls in the area, of course some of the competitors would want a chance to take Tokiko out early. Only question was how this one had found her...

Actually, wait. There was another question. "You!" Tokiko shouted at the girl with the spear. "You cretin! Don't you remember the rules?" She gestured vaguely in Hikari's direction. "She's a normie! A muggle! And we do not fight in front of people without magic!" She groaned, and slapped her forehead with one palm. "Look, I get the eagerness. But if you wanted a piece of me, couldn't you have waited until I was alone?"

Hikari stared, in mute shock, at the sight of the girl perched on her spear. Even more shocking was the fact that Honami wasn't surprised at all. In fact, she was talking about... magic? Normal? What? Rules? Nothing made sense. Everything had been perfectly normal right up until this point, but all of the sudden everything had gone completely mad, utterly and totally insane in every way. Was this some sort of magical girl or something?! But those were only in anime!

The spear girl looked back over her shoulder, towards Honami.

"Eh? Eeeehhh? You're a magical girl, too?" she asked, perplexed, "I had no idea! That makes this a lot easier."

Hikari watched as the girl hopped off of her spear, which suddenly withdrew from the wall and flew into her hand as if it was nothing.

"Fairy-chan's got her eye on this one, and there's no way I'm letting her make even more competition," explained the girl, still looking towards Honami as she spoke, "So, I'm just going to put her in the hospital for a few weeks."

"Wh-what?!" cried Hikari, wide-eyed. Nothing made any sense, but she froze for a moment when the tip of the spear was pointed directly at her.

"That way, she can't become a magical girl until after the Hex Night is over!" declared the spear girl, grinning.

Hikari scooted back, and... out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw a feathery wing... But the spear girl approached, the tip still pointed firmly at the brunette...

Yukimura Hanako

The mass on the floor grumbled, before shifting and resolving more clearly into the barely-awake form of a girl—one not looking forward to leaving the nice, warm futon to head off to school. Still… there was no sense in delaying the inevitable, and Hanako rose shortly after Sonya. She took a bit longer preparing for school than normal; packing away clothes and other sundry things that weren’t needed for the day ahead but would be after.

Having somewhere to stay had been nice, but…

For the first time in a while, Hanako wasn’t paying attention in class. Not because she hadn’t gotten any sleep the night before and was struggling to stay awake but because she was thinking. The Hex Night… something like that was pretty amazing, though her chances of winning it were pretty low. Even if she did, she couldn’t get her main wish, since they wouldn’t allow you to wish someone dead…

Maybe if she won, she’d just have to look shallow and ask for money.

“Yukimura. Yukimura. Please, answer the question!”

When school finished, the white-haired girl wasted no time in changing—it wasn’t hard to find an unattended room for a few minutes, and with her coat on she was a lot less concerned about the weather. Then it was time to get out like everyone else not in a club. Being a magical girl and finding out jobs willing to hire a high-schooler took up far too much time… no matter how much the art clubs wanted her to join or rejoin.

Though before she tried that again, maybe she could find somewhere else to stay… as nice as Sonya had been, it would be wrong to put her under the sort of pressure that hosting a potential enemy might cause. Hanako pulled out her phone, glancing at the corner—it was charged, but she’d still have to be careful about battery levels.

SleepingBeauty: is anyone here not taking part? i need somewhere to stay

Of course, looking at her phone meant not looking where she was going… and walking into someone. Or maybe they walked into her. She was easy enough to miss, there weren’t many people at school this short. Just that underclassman she’d passed in the corridor a few times.

Himeko watched silently as Nico proceeded into the shrine grounds, diligently following the steps of prayer. The shrine maiden hadn't payed much attention in previous visits, but this girl was treating the shrine with a lot of respect. You didn't often see that in people their age.

Come to think of it, she might be better at this than me. Himeko realised, having ascended to the top of the steps to watch over Nico. She was certainly a little lax with procedures, but fulfilled her duties perfectly. Or... well enough to not tarnish the family image, at any rate. Himeko was almost compelled to act the perfect miko.

After a while, Nico finished her prayer, and was quite surprised to see Himeko still present. She gave a cheery little wave in response, "Nah, you were perfect! I'll have to convince dad to take you on as a shrine maiden. You know your stuff!" The young maiden giggled playfully, and indicated the stairs behind her, "well, if you're done here, we can walk together. If you bump into a god, I can smooth things over~"

Himeko had planned to patrol for a bit, but she could wait a little while to do so. It wasn't like something terrible was going on right now, anyway. Not even the impeding Hex Night was much of a concern at the moment. She had a rough plan of action for the thing, anyway, and stressing over the finer details was a waste of time.

"Oh..."

Tokiko sounded almost disappointed at the revelation. Where she'd been angry, alight, excited and furious all at once, she now seemed to deflate. Her shoulders slumped, her arms dropped limply to her sides, and she let out a small sigh. "So... you didn't come for me, then."

That was a good thing, right? She could just leave now, right? If the annoying shorty was going to become a magical girl soon anyway, then attacking her now wouldn't technically be a breach of the rules, and there'd be no risk of magic being exposed to the wider world. Plus, the spear girl was right: less competition was a good thing for all of them. Logically, the best thing for Tokiko to do here would be to just carry on her way, go and meet RokuGun and leave these two to sort out their own business. She had no real reason to stay.

... so why won't my feet move?

Maybe it was the blow to her pride, the fact that an enemy had come not for her but for some random civilian who wasn't even a magical girl yet. Maybe it was her own eagerness, the ever-building anticipation for Hex Night that couldn't be held back any longer.

Or maybe it was what the spear girl had said, about putting Hikari in hospital. Isn't that... going a bit too far? In a fight between magical girls, it made sense to go all-out, because they could take it. Attacking an ordinary human, though? That wasn't a fight. That was bullying.

Tokiko's head slumped forwards, her hair dropping over her eyes. And she giggled.

"Eliminating the competition... then, aren't you pointing your spear in the wrong direction?"

The wind was starting to pick up. Tokiko reach up with one hand and pulled off her glasses, and now she was laughing out loud, a high staccato without rhythm or reason.

"Moron! Imbecile! Thick-headed simpleton! Do you not see?"

Light exploded out from within her body, surrounding her in a column of green-tinted lightning as her laughter rose to a maddened cackle. It spun around her, bright and furious, gradually coalescing into a series of solid forms. Black gloves wrapped tight around her hands, a pair of thin rectangular spectacles with thick steel frames that perched on the tip of her nose. A long white coat, flaring and flapping in the wake of her transformation. Last but not least, her archetype: not a wand, nor a spear, but a huge metal coffin taller than Tokiko herself, surrounded by wires and machinery that crackled with loose electricity.

"Your competition was right here all along, wretch!" Her face split with a grin that reached almost from ear to ear, and she jabbed a thumb in her own direction. "And you've fallen right into my hands! I'll eliminate you and your pitiful spear before the Hex Night even begins! HA! HA! AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

The situation had gone even more insane by the second.

Now Honami had... had transformed?! It had become clear now, both girls were magical girls! And... magical girls... magical girls were real, apparently! Part of Hikari's head suddenly soared at this idea, that niggling reminder of the fact that she had a dream... but it was buried, quickly, under feat and confusion.

The spear-wielding girl let out a sigh, raising her spear away from Hikari, who could barely manage to let out a sigh of relief as she watched the first magical girl round on Honami, resting her weapon on her shoulder.

"Aaah, jeez," she complained, "You really don't want me to take out the competition early? What if she gets some kinda super-strong power or something?!"

The girl sighed, then lowered her spear, taking a ready stance as she slid her feet back, the tip of her spear pointed down with one arm raised to hold the shaft towards the back, then another towards the base of the head.

"Fine. I might not be the strongest magical girl around..."

She suddenly displayed a vicious grin.

"But I'll skewer you on my needle!"

"Skewer me?"

Tokiko cackled again, and wagged one finger in admonition. "So bold! But first, you'll have to get through her..." With that last word, she rapped one hand against the mechanical coffin beside her.

In response, something rumbled from within the device. With a great creaking and clattering, the coffin lid began to shift, and something squeezed out through the gap. Huge grey fingers, thick as drainpipes, then a massive muscular arm covered in bandages and scars. As it pushed free, the mighty limb shoved the rest of the lid out of the way...

...and a smiling girl popped out. She waved her hands menacingly. "Raaaar!"

"Behold, the ultimate weapon!" Tokiko was dancing with excitement, bouncing from one foot to the other. "Get her, Eve!"

"Graaa!" The creature stepped forwards, then suddenly stopped. She looked at the spear girl, then at Hikari, then back at the spear girl, and then turned to Tokiko with a confused expression on her face. "Grrr... gruuu?"

Tokiko groaned, and pointed at the spear girl. "THAT ONE, you incompetent ninny!"

"Oooooh..." The Archetype nodded, and then charged forwards at the spear-wielding magical girl, swiping out with one massive hand to knock the weapon aside. "RAAAAAH!"

Meanwhile, Tokiko crouched down, reaching out for her school backpack. It had been knocked aside by her transformation, but seemed mostly intact, and now she unzipped it and stuck one arm in, fumbling around through its unseen contents. "Needle... in that case..."

"Haah, I thought I recognized the whole mad scientist theme," commented the girl, skipping back after the tip of her spear was batted out of the way, "And now the monstergirl just cinches it. You killed the void shade that appeared last week, didn't you?"

Void shade? Monstergirl? This was all total madness to Hikari, who couldn't help but stare in mute shock at the scene unfolding before her. She couldn't even manage to get her legs up under her and run. Now a skimply-dressed zombie girl had hopped out of the giant coffin, and it was all... it was crazy! Super crazy! Why were magical girls real?!

But even as Hikari watched, that feeling rose in her heart again... if magical girls were real, then... could she... maybe...

She was snapped out of her thoughts when something dropped into her vision, obscuring her view of the fight. The tiny brunette stared. In a long, growing string of unbelievable, shocking things, this was just one of them.

It was a girl with feathery wings.

"Ah, I'm so glad I got to you!" she declared, "Listen, things are a little urgent right now so I have to be quick about this... do you want to be a magical girl?!"

Hikari's mouth hung open.

"Eeeeehhh?!"

Meanwhile, the spear-wielding girl leaped back. In the light of the slowly setting sun, she ducked low, suddenly aiming for an upward thrust of her spear against the other girl. There was something somewhat unusual about it, especially since it had been specifically referred to as a needle... but that was all so far that could be used in its potential identification.

However, it couldn't be guaranteed that the spear-wielding magical girl would be the only enemy...

Christa Yamashiro

“Alright, I think that’s enough for today, girls. The school festival is sure to be a success when we have this much talent among us,” the voice of the drama club’s counselor teacher sounded loud and clear through the auditorium, ending one more rehearsal session to to the Academy’s next big presentation. As was customary of these moments, a not small number of the younger club members gathered around Christa’s stoic figure.

She had been chosen for the lead role in their current play, so it was only natural that such a thing happened when most of the other roles had yet to be determined. “Still, the Phantom of the Opera, huh? I never thought I would have the chance to play a musical before graduation,” she thought while complimenting the others and giving them tips on how to improve their skills, if they allowed her to.

Nevertheless, this was only half of what Christa never thought she would be doing in the immediate present, the other half was much harder to explain to anyone not acquainted with the underworld of magical girls. And, just as she was thinking about that while taking a shower in the auditorium locker room, Christa noticed her phone buzzing. ”There has been a lot of activity in this chat room recently, huh? Much more than usual. I guess that this tournament is really getting everyone excited,” she thought after hastily drying herself and getting out to check the messages she lost during rehearsal.

Only the last one caught her attention, however, prompting Christa to log in and say something about it:

"You killed the void shade that appeared last week, didn't you?"

"Oh yes, that was me." Tokiko snickered. "I couldn't have anything causing trouble while I was busy with Hex Night, so I made sure to thoroughly exterminate every shade and shadow in the neighborhood. This way, there won't be anything distracting me..." She pulled her hand out of her bag and stood up, now holding a taser. "... from wiping out you and everyone else who stands in my way!"

As she was talking, her Archetype continued to advance, driving the spear girl back towards Hikari. The spear came thrusting up again, but the creature simply swung one heavy arm and swatted the shaft, knocking her opponent's strike off course before stepping in and throwing a heavy punch. Even if she was just a servant, she seemed more than capable of keeping up with the magical girl in a close-range fight.

Tokiko, however, was looking past the ongoing battle. Looking at Hikari, or rather, at the winged creature that had just descended in front of her. Suddenly, she raised one hand and shouted at her Archetype. "Eve! Pull back!"

"Grrr...?" The monstergirl stopped her assault and sprung backwards, arms raised in a defensive stance. Tokiko, meanwhile, was now frowning in anger. "Damn it, fairy! Why'd you have to interfere?" Even if she'd been entirely confident in her victory before, the appearance of the feathered girl had her spooked.

"Gah!"

The enemy magical girl was barely able to raise her spear defensively, using the shaft of the weapon to block the heavy punch as it sent her skidding backwards across the ground, sparks flying up from her feet. She swiftly readied herself for another strike... until the monstergirl suddenly retreated.

"Tch... that was the void shade I had my eye on!" protested the spear-wielding girl, until she realized just what was happening behind her.

"I can sense the potential, the will to do good in your heart!" declared the fairy, brightly, "I can grant you the opportunity to be a beautiful and elegant agent of justice, a magical girl!"

Hikari's mouth opened and closed slowly. It wasn't enough that she had been attacked by a magical girl. It wasn't enough that the girl who had collided with her had also been a magical girl and summoned a female version of Frankenstein's Monster to attack the spear girl. It wasn't enough that a fairy had shown up out of no-where.

Now, on top of everything else, she was being offered the chance to be a magical girl herself.

Hikari's heart soared. A magical girl?! That was just what she had wanted, the chance to help people. Ever since that accident all those years ago... but... how was this happening?! How was any of it true?!

That's when the enemy magical girl's spear suddenly hurtled through the air, landing squarely between the fairy and Hikari, who yelped in surprise and fear that she would never admit to.

"Damn it, don't go giving her powers! That makes the whole thing pointless!" snapped the spear-wielder, her spear returning to her side just as quickly as it had been thrown.

"Muuu, but she has a lot of potential! She could help a lot of people! She could defeat a lot of void shades!" cried the fairy, waving her hands frantically at her sides as she did. "That's why I'm here!"

Hikari was simply too overwhelmed to even move, for the moment.

But there was this certain feeling... was another magical girl coming...?

Anya swung her legs in the swing, humming a little tune to herself. She had a problem alright. A big one. The B-word had struck again. She sighed loudly and scowled at the encroaching dusk. Coulnd't nightfall get here any quicker!? It was like time slowed down just for her! Had she pissed off some time god.

"So bored!" she yelled before falling backwards into the sand.

A shame there are no villages to terrorize.

"Can't hurt humans remember," Anya grumbled. "Though that sounds dangerously close to fun."

They scatter like ants. Anya's own mouth watered as she shared the memory. Delicious roasted flesh.

"Great now I'm bored and hungry." Anya groaned. "Thanks alot."

Try being trapped in the body of a creature you once hunted.

Anya was silent for a while. The cool air felt good on her skin, the peace bearable for once. "You think it's karma you being made my Archetype?"

Fear. A growl rumbled through Anya's mind then just her and her thoughts.

Cryptic much? Anya stood up and stretched. Anytime now some fun would come her way she just knew it. Her smile was positively feral.

"Ha! Aaaaheehahahahahaaaa!" Tokiko was laughing again. "Maybe you're right, Fairy-chan, but isn't that a bit cruel?"

Her expression darkened. "You could have waited a week, even a few days, and then made her a happy magical girl who defeats lots of shades. But instead you come to her now, and nearly get her killed." She teetered to one side, gesturing restlessly with her taser. "A new magical girl on the eve of Hex Night? She'll be toast. No allies, no experience, and she probably won't even know what her Archetype is. If you gift her with magic now, you'll just be setting her up to lose, and lose hard." She sighed. "Honestly, putting her in hospital might have been the more merciful thing to do..."

And then she grinned, and shrugged. "...but why should I care? Only someone as weak as Miss Needle over here would see a newbie like her as a threat. In fact, it might even be fun to see such a irritating person fall into despair!" She laughed again. "Do it, Hikari! Fight, and fail, and then wallow in your own defeat!"

Whilst Tokiko gloated, her Archetype was frowning, sniffing at the air. Almost as if it sensed something amiss...

Across the city many ravens flew. From eyes to eyes she flitted her vision, moving her own gaze through each of the raven's own eyes to quickly scan each area before moving on to the next. A fine network spread across the city allowed her to view a small region almost completely through her legion of shadows. At night she was able to cover so much more but for now this would suffice.

For the most part it was mundane. Men, women and children went about there lives no differently than back home for the most part. For all their differences people really were all alike, both for better and for worse. One set of eyes caught sight of an altercation taking place between what was immediately obvious to be magical girls. Three of them were clearly changed into their alter egos while one seemed to be caught in the middle of the mess, a fairy quite near her.

Deciding to investigate more closely she brought the raven in close, landing on the ledge of the rooftop overlooking the alleyway. Now close she could hear some of the words being exchanged. The two appeared to be disparaging the mundane girl. It was starting to become clear that the topic on hand was the event she had come for: The Hex Night.

They were quite heartless towards her. She continued to watch, the dark raven perched calmly as it spectated.

"It's not cruel!" declared the fairy, defiantly, even as Hikari had absolutely no clue what was happening(aside from her anger rising at both the magical girls present, now), "It might be hard for her... but it isn't the first time a magical girl has been created right before the Hex Night, and if she misses her chance this time the next one won't come for another twenty years! That's how I view it!"

By this point, the fairy had interposed herself between Hikari and the other two girls, leaving the tiny brunette to peer around her. The Hex Night... was it some sort of battle between Magical Girls? Why? But it didn't matter. This was a chance for her to become a magical girl! It was the only opportunity she had ever been offered for something like this. And deep down, it was something she'd wanted ever since that accident all those years ago.

"That's a nice sentiment 'n all, but I'm still going to put her in the hospital," commented the spear girl, twirling her 'needle' as she did, "Frankenstein-sensei over there might talk a tough game, but she did intervene to protect that girl like an idiot, right?"

Her body tensed again.

"So I'll just have to beat her and her monster both. You can't intervene directly, right? So I just gotta do it before you make her a magical girl too!"

The fairy appeared hesitant.

"... Hey... what do I have to say? To... to become a magical girl," asked Hikari.

"Oh? Well-"

Suddenly, there was a rush of air and noise, as someone seemed to come from no-where aiming a flying kick directly towards Tokiko's monstergirl!

"Frankenstein-sensei over there might talk a tough game, but she did intervene to protect that girl like an idiot, right?"

Tokiko turned bright red. "N-no I didn't! I just wanted to get rid of you after you came and attacked us, that's all!" She crossed her arms and shook her head, trying to emphasize the point. "There's no way I'd care about a nuisance like her. Not in a million years!"

Beside her, the monstergirl giggled, and Tokiko snapped her head around to glare at her familiar. "Shut up! I'm being serious, here!" She turned back to the spear-girl with a scowl. "If you want to beat me, fine, give me your best shot. I'll show you just how outclassed you are—"

And then someone came flying in and kicked her Archetype. Oh, for heaven's sake, why do people keep butting in today?!

'Eve' had anticipated that something might happen. As a new enemy came flying at her, she raised one arm and blocked the kick, getting knocked back a little but otherwise seeming mostly unharmed. "Grrr..." Rather than immediately strike back, she moved to position herself between the new attacker and Tokiko, acting as a shield against any follow-up attacks. Whoever this might be, she wasn't going to let them hurt her master!

The figure that rose, grinning widely, after she kicked the monstergirl didn't have an entirely human appearance herself. But that was hardly unheard of. Some magical girls were physically influenced by their concepts and archetypes, after all. But... the oversized kanabo, the horns, the oddly shameless manner of dress combined with the Japanese theme...

It was Steel Rod Naoko, one of the stronger magical girls in Tokyo. Her grin displayed her sharp-looking fangs, as she rested her kanabo on her shoulder.

"Heeeh, Tsukimi-chaaaan?" she asked, craning her neck towards the spear-wielding girl, now identified as Tsukimi, "Not only did you go starting a fight before the Hex Night started, but you kicked it off without me? You're being pretty naughty."

She waved a finger in an admonishing fashion, still grinning as she did. She didn't seem all that bothered, if Hikari was being honest.

"But now that I'm here, I'm hardly going to pass up the opportunity, right? Frankenstein-sensei!"

Turning abruptly on her heel, she dragged the kanabo through the street, grinding a long gash in the asphalt as she turned, swinging it heavily towards the monstergirl as she did.

Tsukimi seemed to relax, her shoulders sagging, before she glanced back towards Hikari... and then towards Tokiko. Suddenly, she darted right towards the other magical girl, spear held at the ready!

Hikari stared, then glanced back towards the fairy, who was watching the battle with a look of concern on her face.

"You... fairy, right?!"

As much as she'd been pissed off at the other girl, and moreso after being belittled... that... that was just more of a reason to show how she was wrong, right?! And leaving her to fend off two enemies on her own...

"Ah, yes!"

"What do I have to do?!"
