  • Age: Physically appears somewhere in her late teens, from 17-19.

  • Appearance: "Maybe... this way we'll get back everything we lost...!"
  • Personality: Lila is not someone who is utterly without pride. As one of those possessing Dragonblood, she is among Nova Terra's nobility from birth, standing as one of the few with the authority to officiate challenges due to their position. Even now, after Silver Sun has fallen so low, she still has this ability, her body intrinsically tied to Nova Terra. As a result, she does take some pride in her heritage, in her bloodline, and she is not above boasting at times of this. However, in spite of her pride, Lila's primary concern is with the well-being of her community. She desperately wants to help those suffering due to the state of Silver Sun, desiring to help bring it back to its original glory so that those who are a part of it can be happy and thrive once again. Even in spite of Silver Sun's dire circumstances, Lila is still a polite and cheerful girl. Perhaps this is motivated in part because of her desire to draw in people who can help Silver Sun flourish once more, but that doesn't make it less genuine. Even considering her politeness, however, Lila can become quite frustrated and angry if someone successfully gets a rise out of her. She will not back down for any reason if it's for the sake of Silver Sun, but she is also surprisingly easily flustered and embarrassed.
  • Abilities: As a Dragonblood, Lila is enormously fast and strong and has the natural ability to control and breath fire. This is something inherent to all of her kind. Due to her nature, she is also directly tied to the existence of Nova Terra, able to officiate Nova Challenges and even cancel them or alter the rules. However, she must have strong justification for this, and the game will simply resume unaltered if she does not. Lila possesses the ability to tap further into her dragon blood, manifesting fiery wings from her shoulders and enhancing her capabilities greatly. She is also incredibly durable and resistant to physical damage. In the absolute most dire circumstances, Lila is also the holder of Dragon Slaughter Ascalon, the murderous lance that annihilated a mighty dragon in a single blow. It may seem odd that one with dragon blood carries such a weapon, but it is not something she will even draw without due need. Dragon Slaughter Ascalon is devastatingly powerful, vaporizing the target on impact in an enormous blast of magical energy, but it is also taxing and can cause considerably collateral damage in addition to Lila's usual reluctance to actually use it.
  • Skills: Lila is extremely competent and knowledgeable when it comes to the rules of effectively any game in existence. But this is practically required of anyone of the Dragonblood who still serves as part of Nova Terra's nobility. She is a remarkably competent fighter, though not the most skilled among anyone who has ever been a part of Silver Sun.
  • Backstory: Lila was born among the Dragonblood, and naturally served as part of Nova Terra's administration of Nova Challenges. Eventually, she came to be part of Silver Sun, and grew attached to the community and was happy to be one of its members. Unfortunately, she has seen the community fall apart, and have all of its strongest members killed or torn away by challenges. Even she has been an intended target... Finally, desperate to save Silver Sun, she has sent letters beyond the world of Nova Terra, into other universes...

No issues with people from modernity or futuristic worlds, right? I've a few ideas floating around, but they're kinda trending in that direction at present. Additionally, do powersets need to be baked into the backstory, or are they allowed as "something gained in the shift" I.E. "my power is that the usual gun I tote now has unlimited rounds and doesn't need maintenance"?

Well, I'm here to put a character up! Tell me if anything needs changed, I'm open to it.




Name: Aoife De Chuid Mag Mell

Age: Three hundred and some years

Race: Dullahan (Fae)

Personality:

On the surface, Aoife is somewhat aggressive person who is ready to fight anyone that challenges her. Her expressions are rather aggressive as well. Otherwise, she’s a rather kind person. When she encounters a lost person, she offers to lead them to safety. When she encounters a lost soul, she helps it with last requests within her ability before sending them off to Mag Mell.

Abilities:

Dullahan Anatomy: Dullahan have their head separated from their bodies. They can slightly move their head through a small amount of magic but they need to hold them to move it best of course. Their bodies can move independently of their head of course. When separated by a large distance, they can sense the head and move towards it. Luckily, it has a sort of radar to not bump into every little thing along the way.

Summon Spectral Horse: Dullahans have the ability to summon a spectral horse to ride around on.

Spirit Magic: Dullahans have the ability to collect souls of the dead or dying and therein communicate with them. That said, Dullahans have a reputation in that there are spells that these souls are used for which may or may not be true. People are wary of them for this.

Gold Burn: Dullahans have an innate weakness to gold, causing them to burn when exposed to it.

Skills:

Martial Weapons Proficiency: Aoife has practiced with weapons for many years for fun, for the most part as she has traveled Nova Terra. She has fought a number of skilled individuals and has become a rather infamous person in many circles not to mention the dungeons.

Smithing: Weapon wear is bad on someone that uses their weapons a lot much as Aoife does. She took a year or so of time to learn to smith from a dwarven smith since she heard they were the best in the industry. She learned that from another dwarf, of course.

In addition, she has some lesser skills. Riding, cooking, woodworking.

Backstory: Aoife is a Dullahan from the land of Mag Mall, a place that is considered a paradise. In truth, it is a land that houses the souls of the dead though it is true that the actual citizens of this land are treated well. Dullahan are those that collect spirits and souls and bring them to Mag Mell.

They are “born” fully grown or created through odd magics. Aoife was born a Dullahan. When they are born as such, they are required by the Royal Family to serve as soul collectors for one hundred years. After such service is over, they are allowed to do as the please within the borders. Most become nobles of sorts and are granted land to become knights of sorts.

Aoife, for her part, disliked that idea. As much as she loves her land of Mag Mell, she loves exploring the world outside her island more. She requested leave to the lands of Mag Mell to explore the rest of Nova Terra. She was granted it, as long as she delivered lost souls she found to Mag Mell. It was a sort of “you scratch my back, I scratch yours” deal to which Aoife agreed. Mag Mell was a better fate than being lost on the roadside, so there should be little issue here.

Now she travels the lands of Nova Terra as Adventurer and Soul Keeper. She travels on her spectral horse across the land, exploring and sightseeing. She also enjoys dungeon-diving for treasures, helping failing adventurers and recovering souls of the lost while she’s at it. This is what her life has mostly revolved around for the last 200 and some years.

She’s made some friends over this time and had even more people distrust her because of rumors of Dullahans, though she never lets this keep her down. While it’s not everyone who believes baseless rumors, it’s enough.

The point of the armor is to stop magic from being used against him. All other forms of combat will work. It increases the characters survivability, yes, but it’s not impenetrable or indestructible. In the backstory it appears that way because he was facing against opponents who weren’t equipped with like-powered magical equipment.

The main inspiration was to have a character that magic would not work against. The buffs provided are temporary, and dissipate when the fighting is done if there was any fighting. Otherwise, he’s just not affected by magic. The initial boost the armor provides is there to put him a step above your standard knight in armor.

I see it story-wise as at first potential opponents see how strong he can be when magic is used against him and as the story unfolds, start to either come up with other strategies without magic or use more martial challengers.

If you have any suggestions to make the character more acceptable, I'll see what I can do. I mainly want a character that punishes opponents that think only using magic as their “be all, end all” strategy. At the same time, I don’t want him to suffer from the common “I’ll overload him” trope. Theoretically, he is only as strong as the magic used against him. If there is a way we can compromise, I would be appreciative.

It feels like the obvious problem of taking everything that can ever be used under magic and parcelling it into a little black box that you go and hard counter. Whilst being utterly incompetent when faced with like... a mechanical dragon using no magic at all.

It's not an ability that forces adaptation; it's one that forces the entire magical world to not use magic at all. It's not exciting. It's not balanced. It's a plot headache.

I can see your point. I don't want to completely shut out magic with his interactions. I want to make it hard to use it effectively against him while making him worthy as a person the desparate people of the Silver Sun would call upon. This way seemed like a good fit that could use story telling as well as mechanics to deal with. I have thought of several ways you could counter him while still using magic. The armor would protect him from direct magic, meaning magic attacks, or nullify enchantments at the time of impact without removing them entirely. However, if you were to throw a rock at him propelled by magic, or if you set a field on fire (normal fire anyway), or if you broke the ground underneath him then the armor would be much less effective. He is also still susceptible to other environmental changes such as heat, cold, dust, fog, etc.

Using magical fire as an example: Lets say this magic fire cannot be extinguished, burns really hot, and will stick to anything. The armor would protect him from being burned by it if use directly against him, extinguish if thrown against him, and he would probably feel little heat. However, if the fire is use around him like as a deterrent, or trap him in a room and that is set on fire using it, then he would not be able to put it out, it'd continue to burn even if he stepped on it, the armor taking any damage that might have caused, and he would feel the heat put out by the flames. He would not be burned by touching the fire, he'd be burned because he is really close to a heat source.
